Three‐lobe morning glory (Ipomoea triloba L.) is an annual weed, which presents vigorous growth, long cycle, and tolerance to glyphosate. Thus, knowledge of aspects related to germination and behavior in the seed bank of this species are essential for the adoption of appropriate management practices to reduce the population in agricultural fields. Therefore, the objective of this work was to characterize the requirements for three‐lobe morning glory germination, perform field emergence modeling using thermal and hydrothermal time models, and determine the longevity of the seed bank. Eight temperatures and 10 water potentials were tested in the laboratory to determine the base temperature and water potential for seed germination. For the modeling of the emergence, field experiments were conducted between the years 2014 and 2018 considering three sampling times (10/20, 11/10, and 12/01), which coincide with the sowing times of summer annual crops. To evaluate the longevity and persistence of the seed bank, a factorial experiment was conducted in which factor A consisted of three burial depths and factor B consisted of five harvesting times. Base values for three‐lobe morning glory emergence are base, optimum, and maximum temperatures of 12.32, 29.82, and 43.31°C, respectively, and base water potential of −0.80 MPa. Both models are adequate to predict the emergence of three‐lobe morning glory in the three sampling times. The species has a persistent seed bank, in which the greater the depth of seed burial, the greater the longevity of the seed bank, and can remain viable for up to 16 months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Weedy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most problematic weed in rice fields due to the few control management alternatives to control it, because of the genetic similarity with the crop. Different cropping systems (regarding soil preparation before sowing) have been used as options to control the persistence and emergence of the weed seedbank. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the longevity and vertical distribution of weedy rice seeds in the soil seedbank after 22 years of different rice cropping systems. Data was analyzed as a two-way factorial, with cropping systems carried out for 22 years [no-tillage (NT), conventional tillage (CT), wet direct-seeded (WDS)] as one factor and sampling depth (0-2, 2-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm) as the other factor. The number of whole and deteriorated seeds per m-2 were assessed, as well as the viability (%). No effect between the systems were detected up to 5 cm, however at 5-10 cm CT and WDS showed higher amount of seeds, and WDS at 10-20 cm. As the sampling depth increased, NT showed fewer amount of seeds, while less reduction of the soil seedbank was observed in WDS. CT and WDS spread viable seeds in the soil profile from 0 to 20 cm depth. After 22 years there are viable weedy rice seeds up to 10 cm of depth in the three cropping systems and there is no difference among them up to 5 cm of depth, demonstrating the serious problem of the seedbank for this species. Biotic and abiotic factors such as competition with weeds and water deficit may cause significant losses to soybean productivity. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of water deficit and plant recovery in the interaction between soybean (Glycine max) and slender amaranth (Amaranthus viridis) by using growth variables. A replacement series experiment was performed and treatments were arranged in a factorial scheme; they were composed of two water regimes (field capacity and water deficit (50% of field capacity)) and different soybean and slender amaranth proportions (100:0, 50:50 and 0:100%). Water regimes were applied 20 days after plant transplant. Height, leaf area and shoot dry matter were evaluated in soybean and slender amaranth under field capacity and water deficit, returning to normal irrigation conditions to evaluate the water recovery. Soybean exhibited competitiveness which was equivalent to the slender amaranth, independent of the water regime. Water deficit negatively influenced height, leaf area and shoot dry matter of soybean and slender amaranth. Ryegrass management has been difficult by the occurrence of resistant biotypes to several herbicides with different action mechanisms. Since herbicides mixes and rotations are an important alternative for resistant weed management, the objective of this work was to evaluate the interaction of the dose of the herbicides glufosinate and atrazine on ryegrass control and its seeds' quality exposed to their association. For this study, three experiments were carried out using factorial design in field, laboratory, and greenhouse conditions. Two factors (A and B) were evaluated in each experiment, where factor A and B represented the doses of glufosinate and atrazine, respectively. Ryegrass control was evaluated in field experiment, while germination percentage and Emergence Speed Index (ESI), were obtained in laboratory and greenhouse analyses, respectively. The data were submitted to variance analysis (P<0.05) and the significant results were analyzed through response surface graphs. For ryegrass control data, the effect of the interaction was analyzed by the Colby method; glufosinate provides efficient ryegrass control, but its association with atrazine reduces the efficiency, being characterized as an antagonism between molecules. Glufosinate herbicide application, independent of atrazine presence, reduced the ryegrass seeds quality at the post-flowering stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Brazil, horseweed is one of the most important weeds because of the resistance to herbicides and high competitive for the crops. A large of losses were reported in major crops such as soybeans, wheat and corn, where the use a no-tillage system and the herbicide resistance promote better establishment. A correct understanding of the way temperature influences germination enables the prediction of the regions with the highest potential for colonization by this weed and thus facilitates its control. The objective of this study; therefore, was to discern the ways temperature affected the germination, viability and longevity of horseweed seeds. Testing was done at 10, 20 and 30°C, while evaluation occurred on days 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60. Seeds were packed in a nylon mesh bag (5x5cm), with 10g of upland soil (Yellow Red Argissolo, sandy loam texture), placed in transparent plastic boxes at 0 to 0.5cm soil depth, at the temperatures specified. Percentage of remaining seeds, first and second germination counts, abnormal seedlings, and dead, dormant, viable and non-viable seeds, were assessed. Horseweed seeds achieve secondary dormancy at 10, 20 and 30°C, while their quality and the longevity showed damage at 20 and 30°C temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goals of this study were to evaluate herbicide application rates at different timings for preharvest desiccation of wheat (Trial 1), as well as to evaluate the effect of the timing of herbicide desiccation at preharvest and harvest timing (Trial 2) on yield, germination, and herbicide residue in wheat seed. In Trial 1, treatments consisted of two application rates of glufosinate, glyphosate, paraquat, or paraquat+diuron and a control without application; application time periods were in the milk grain to early dough stage, soft dough to hard dough stage, and hard dough stage. In Trial 2, treatments consisted of different application time periods (milk grain to early dough stage, and soft dough to hard dough stage), different herbicides (glufosinate, 2,4-D+glyphosate, and untreated control), and different harvest times (5, 10 and 15 days after herbicide application). One thousand seeds weight, yield, first and final germination count, and herbicide residue on seeds were evaluated. Preharvest desiccation with paraquat, glufosinate, and 2,4-D+glyphosate at the milk grain to early dough stage reduces wheat yield. Regardless of the herbicide and application rate, application in the milk grain to early dough stage and soft dough to hard dough stage provides greater germination of wheat seeds, except at the lower dose of paraquat. The awareness of agronomic practices that affect the resistance selection of weeds to a particular herbicide is of utmost importance in order to advocate management practices that aim to avoid or prolong the resistance. The objectives of this study were to identify and map the occurrence of the wild poinsettia's low-level resistance to glyphosate in Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Brazil, and to define the main agronomic factors associated with the selection of these biotypes. Seed and / or soil samples in areas with suspected resistance were collected in Roundup Ready® (RR) soybean crops in different counties in the RS region during the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. A questionnaire on the operations history in the area was applied at each site in order to establish relationships between the distribution of wild poinsettia with cases of suspected resistance to glyphosate and the likely agronomic factors involved in this occurrence. The study included the response of wild poinsettia biotypes with suspected resistance to glyphosate and an analysis of the questionnaires carried out with producers. The main agronomic practices used by producers that favor the emergence of resistant biotypes were the continued cultivation of the RR® soybean; an overdependence on the use of glyphosate; a low rate of crop rotation and efficient chemical alternatives for wild poinsettia control and management. The species of Echinochloa (barnyardgrass) stand out among major weeds infesting rice cropping and damages are variable depending on the weed population, rice cultivar, and management practices adopted by rice farmers. The objective of this work was to measure the control of barnyardgrass in rice cropping, cultivar Qualimax 1, due to the early times of flood irrigation, application times, and doses of penoxsulam. The experiment was conducted in the field, where the experimental design used a randomized block design with a split plot design with four replications. The treatments consisted of two application periods (early and late) of penoxsulam three times of irrigation start (1, 15 and 30 days after treatment application--(DAT)) and herbicide doses (0, 24, 36, 48 and 60gha-1). The genus Digitaria has a great ecological adaptability, being exceptionally harmful to maize crops. Appropriate management practices are necessary to reduce the negative effects of this weed and avoid maize yield losses. The effects of different cover crops straw levels, when incorporated or maintained on the soil surface, on the initial development of Digitaria spp. (crabgrass) were evaluated. The experimental design used consisted of randomized blocks, with four replications. Treatments were arranged in factorial scheme with the following factors: (A) - cover crops management (incorporated and on the soil surface), (B) - cover crops (Brassica napus, Raphanus sativus, Trifolium vesiculosum and Lolium multiflorum, and (C) - straw levels (0, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 10 t ha-1). At least 6 t ha-1 of straw were needed on the soil surface to reduce crabgrass growth. Lolium multiflorum straw provided, in general, greater reduction in the growth parameters of Digitaria spp. As the cover crops straw levels increased on the soil surface, a reduction of Digitaria spp. growth was observed. The chemical substances released by plant residues left on soil surface have different behaviors from the incorporation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of cover crops straws, when incorporated or maintained on the soil surface, on the emergence of Digitaria spp. (crabgrass). The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replications. Treatments were arranged in a factorial scheme with the following factors: (A) - cover management (incorporated and on the soil surface), (B) - cover crops (Brassica napus, Raphanus sativus, Trifolium vesiculosum and Lolium multiflorum) and (C) - straw levels (0, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 10 t ha-1). The Digitaria spp. emergence rates were favored by the increasing levels of straw on the soil surface. With increasing levels of cover crop straws incorporated into the soil a tendency on the reduction of Digitaria spp. emergence was observed. Herbicide promotes physiological and biochemical changes even in tolerant species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the interference of the herbicides clodinafop-propargyl and 2,4-D in the antioxidant system of wheat, and iodosulfuron-methyl in wheat and ryegrass. Two studies, divided into three experiments, were conducted in an entirely randomized design in a greenhouse and phytotron. The first study tested herbicides iodosulfuron-methyl, clodinafop-propargyl, 2,4-D, and a control without application in wheat. The second, divided into two experiments with wheat and ryegrass, tested iodosulfuron-methyl doses (0, 1.75, 3.5, and 7.0 g a.i. ha-1). The variables analyzed were the concentrations of chlorophylls a, b, carotenoids, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lipid peroxidation (TBARS), electrolyte leakage, and antioxidant system activity. The herbicide treatments iodosulfuron-methyl, clodinafop-propargyl, and 2,4-D decreased the concentrations of chlorophylls and carotenoids in wheat plants. The herbicides promoted oxidative stress with increased H2O2 and TBARS concentrations. Increasing the dose of iodosulfuron-methyl provided a reduction in the activity of the enzymatic antioxidant system in wheat and ryegrass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2002, a survey carried out in rice paddies in the Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state reported the occurrence of nine species of jointvetch (Aeschynomene). Due to their semi-aquatic habit, some species adapted to irrigated rice fields, which led to their being considered the worst broadleaf weed in RS. Although farmers have successfully implemented weed management practices, Aeschynomene plants have reportedly escaped chemical control. This study aims to identify the species of Aeschynomene that occur in rice fields in RS and to evaluate the reasons why escapes are occurring. A survey was carried out by collecting mature seeds from individual adult plants. A questionnaire on the management practices employed in each field was administered to 54 farmers and 18 extension agents, each of whom was responsible for one of the surveyed rice fields. This survey found four species of Aeschynomene are present in rice fields in RS: A. denticulata, A. indica, A. rudis, and A. sensitiva. The results suggest that the explanation for escapes may lie in the management practices adopted by farmers, which are focused on the control of weedy grasses. Escapes are also associated with problems such as the lack of irrigation uniformity and out-of-stage, late herbicide applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acetolactate synthase inhibitors are the main group of herbicides used in winter crops in Southern Brazil where their intensive use has selected for herbicide-resistant biotypes of radish. The resistance affects the efficacy of herbicides, and identifying the resistance mechanism involved is important for defining management strategies. The aim of this study was to elucidate the resistance mechanism of radish biotypes by quantifying the enzyme activity, ALS gene sequencing and evaluating the response of biotypes to iodosulfuron and imazethapyr herbicide application after treatment with a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase inhibitor. The susceptible (B1) and resistant (B4 and B13) biotypes were from wheat fields in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul State. The results demonstrated that the enzyme affinity for the substrate (KM) was not affected in biotypes B4 and B13 but that the Vmax of the resistant biotypes was higher than that of biotype B1. The resistant biotypes showed no differential metabolic response to iodosulfuron and imazethapyr herbicides when inhibited by malathion and piperonyl butoxide. However, gene sequencing of ALS showed a mutation at position 574, with an amino acid substitution of tryptophan for leucine (Trp-574-Leu) in resistant biotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radish is an important weed that causes yield reduction in winter crops in southern Brazil. The control chemical of radish is an important and essential step to prevent damage on crops. However the intensive use of ALS-inhibitors herbicides favors the selection resistant biotypes. The selection can influence the adaptive traits of biotypes with physiological changes and growth variables and plant reproduction. The objective of the study was compare the fitness costs of susceptible and resistant radish biotypes to ALS-inhibitors herbicides. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse using completely randomized design with five replications. The treatments were arranged in factorial arrangement corresponding to susceptible and resistant biotypes (B1 and B4) and nine sampling times (14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84, 98, 112 and 126 days after emergency), respectively. The variables evaluated were plant height, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, total dry matter, leaf area, growth rate, relative growth rate, leaf area ratio, number of siliques and seeds produced per plant. Weedy rice (Oryza sp.) is one of the most troublesome global weeds in cultivated rice. Its troublesome status is associated with characteristics such as seed shattering and dormancy, allowing for long‐term reinfestation and persistence in rice fields. However, the role of rising carbon dioxide levels (CO2) and other climate variables on these characteristics has not, to date, been assessed. The current research objectives were to evaluate two aspects related to climatic change, increased CO2 concentration (400 ± 50 μmol mol−1 and 700 ± 50 μmol mol−1) and water management (continuous and alternate‐wetting drying), to assess plant development, seed shattering and seedbank longevity of weedy rice. Our results indicated that elevated CO2 (700 ± 50 μmol mol−1) increased weedy rice growth and biomass, seed shattering and lengthened viability within the seedbank. Water management did not affect weedy rice growth, seed shattering and seed dormancy. These results suggest that in areas where weedy rice is dominant, its seed bank persistence and potential competition may be exacerbated with rising CO2 levels, with negative consequences for rice production. Herbicides used in Clearfield® rice system are characterized to be mobile in soil. This mobility contributes to environmental contamination and intensifies the residual in the soil, due to the upward movement during the off-season. The flooded irrigation used on rice crops is the main cause of imidazolinones leaching. However, alternative practices can be used to minimize leaching of herbicides. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of different irrigation management on leaching of imidazolinone herbicides. For this, two experiments were conducted using soil columns in a greenhouse and testing three irrigation managements: continuous, intermittent and field capacity. The herbicides were applied to soil surface and after 48 hours irrigation started. At 45 and 90 days of irrigation for the first and second trials, respectively, bioassay was carried out using different soil layers. Results showed that the formulated mixture of imazapyr + imazapic showed the greatest leaching potential. For individually herbicides tested, imazapic was the most leached one, followed by imazethapyr and imazapyr. Continuous and intermittent irrigation managements did not differ and promoted greater leaching potential of herbicides compared to soil at field capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Imidazolinone herbicides are widely used in rice for the control of major weeds. These herbicides behave as weak acids or bases, depending on the pH which may affect leaching. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of liming on imazethapyr and imazapyr leaching. Undisturbed soil samples (pH 4.8) were collected in a rice paddy field without history imidazolinone application. The soil columns, that constituted the experiment units, were collected using a soil extractor constituting. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, arranged in a factorial design, begin the factor A included of soil with natural pH and limed soil. Factor B was included the herbicides imazethapyr and imazapyr (all at 100g a.i. ha-1) applied to the surface of the soil columns. Factor C included of sampling depths at the end of the experiment to evaluate leaching (5 by 5cm). The results showed that enhanced pH cause by liming affect herbicide leaching in rice paddy soil. Italian ryegrass (Lolium perenne spp. multiflorum Lam.) is a troublesome weed commonly found in winter cereals. Winter cover crops represent an alternative for weed suppression, reducing weed soil seed banks, and future infestations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suppression of winter cover crops on reducing the soil seed bank and infestations of Italian ryegrass in fields managed under no‐tillage system. Field experiment was carried out during three consecutive years, in a strip‐plot design with four blocks, containing the winter cover crops. Wheat (Triticum aestivum), canola (Brassica napus), barley (Hordeum vulgare), common vetch (Vicia sativa), cereal rye (Secale cereale), feral radish (Raphanus sativus), and black oat (Avena strigosa) were sown in each strip (block) under no‐tillage system and compared with weedy fallow. Seed bank was quantified at 0.0‐ to 0.05‐ and 0.05‐ to 0.10‐m depths, whereas Italian ryegrass infestations were measured with a sample frame of 0.0625 m2. Greater suppression and lower soil seed bank were reported in plots managed with cereal rye, common vetch, black oat, and feral radish, reducing up to 80% in the first year, and up to 96% after 3 yr of continuous management in comparison to weedy fallow. Italian ryegrass infestations increased four‐ to six‐fold when managed with canola. High suppressor potential of Italian ryegrass occurred for cover crops with biomass dry accumulation greater than 8.7 tons ha−1, especially to plants with a height upper to 1 m, plant characteristics essential to reduce strongly Italian ryegrass infestations and ensure weed‐free fields throughout the time. Cyperus difformis L. is a weed that occurs in flooded rice, which has presented difficulty in controlling due to the resistance to ALS inhibiting herbicides. The objectives of this research were to investigate kinetic characteristics of ALS enzyme from C. difformis biotypes and to determine the biochemical bases of resistance from the species to pyrazosulfuron-ethyl herbicide. For that, experiments were conducted at the BIOAGRO/UFV laboratory. The method used was based on the methodology used by CAREY et al. (1997) and adapted by VARGAS et al. (1999), with some modifications. It was evaluated substratum concentration (pyruvate) that provides initial velocity equal to half the speed reaction (KM) and maximum velocity of reaction (Vmáx), as well the activity of the ALS enzyme in the presence of the inhibitor (pyrazosulfuronethyl). According to the results, it is possible to observe that C. difformis resistance to pyrazosulfuron-ethyl is due to the insensibility of the ALS enzyme to the herbicide, however without penalty to KM and Vmáx kinetic parameters of the ALS enzyme. The herbicides imazethapyr and imazapic, used in Clearfield® rice, have high mobility and persistence in the soil, causing injury to non-resistant rice grown in rotation. These herbicides can leach and reach greater depths along the profile. This positioning can be a in-depth selectivity factor and partially explain the different results found in literature about carryover of imidazolines. To understand this effect, this study had the objective of to evaluate the effect of the positioning of the mixture of imazethapyr and imazapic (75g ai L-1 and 25g ai L-1) on the injury to non-resistant rice crop. Two experiments were carried out in soil with 15% clay and 1.2% organic matter in a greenhouse at the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Pelotas, RS, Brazil. Experiment I consisted of a preliminary study to verify the location depth of the herbicide in the soil profile that causes injury to rice non-tolerant rice, and the herbicides has been allocated at depths of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 e 70cm. Experiment II also consisted in the allocation of herbicide at depths in the soil profile of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18cm. The variables were visual plant injury, plant shoot dry weight and plant height. The formulated mixture of imazethapyr + imazapic located near the soil surface cause injury to non resistant rice plants but when allocated at depths greater than 20cm of the soil surface does not affect the development of non-resistant rice . Pesticides applied in paddy rice can be transported to water bodies. The determination of the contamination extent is very important to alert the society and the politicians about the contamination issue. The objective of this study was to monitor pesticides in surface water in seven regions of south Brazil associated with the rice cropping in three different moments of the 2007/2008 growing season. Surface water samples were collected at three locations per region, with a total of 21 locations. The pesticides evaluated were: clomazone, quinclorac, penoxsulam, imazethapyr, imazapic, carbofuran, 3-hydroxy-carbofuran, fipronil and tebuconazole. The samples were analyzed by LC-MS/MS. Imazethapyr, carbofuran and fipronil were detected in all regions studied. A higher number of pesticides were detected in the 'Depressão Central' and in the 'Planície Costeira Externa à Lagoa dos Patos' regions, with eight pesticides. The 'Região Sul' had the lowest contamination, with detection of only four pesticides in surface water. All samples in all season contained at least one pesticide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jointvetch (Aeschynomene spp., Fabaceae) is considered a problematic broadleaf weed for rice production in Brazil, the United States, and Asia. Seed dormancy is particularly important for the perpetuation of annual weeds, representing the only link between different generations and thus the source of all future weed infestations. Seed dynamics in annual species are complex and related to many biotic and abiotic factors. The objectives of this study were to determine whether dormancy occurs in Aeschynomene denticulata and Aeschynomene indica seeds, and, if so, what is the most efficient method to break it. In addition, the persistence of seeds in soil also was investigated for both species. Three experiments were conducted, two in lab conditions and one in field conditions. The first experiment consisted of germination tests conducted in controlled conditions to determine whether seeds have dormancy. The second experiment tested the effectiveness of preheating, precooling, potassium nitrate, gibberellic acid, water soaking, chemical scarification, and mechanical scarification as dormancy breaking methods. Finally, the third experiment evaluated seedbank longevity for 1‐year period in the rice‐cultivated soil during which seeds were buried and recovered every 3 months. Variations in physical dormancy are present at different levels in both species due to seed‐coat impermeability to water absorption. The incidence of volunteer Enlist™ soybean in the post-emergence of crops in succession, such as wheat, requires changes in chemical control. Thus, the objective of the work is to evaluate the efficiency of different post-emergence herbicides in the control of volunteer Enlist™ soybean and wild radish and their selectivity to wheat. For this, four experiments were conducted in 2017 and 2018 in field and greenhouse. The treatments tested were pyroxsulam, saflufenacil, pyroxsulam + saflufenacil, pyroxsulam + bentazon, pyroxsulam + metribuzin, saflufenacil + bentazon, and saflufenacil + metribuzin in 2017, and triclopyr, saflufenacil, MCPA, quinclorac, dicamba, pyroxsulam + metribuzin, metribuzin + metsulfuron, pyroxsulam + bentazon and bentazon + metsulfuron in 2018. The variables were the control of wild radish and volunteer Enlist™ soybean phytotoxicity to wheat crop, yield components, and yield total. The association of the herbicides pyroxsulam and saflufenacil is efficient in the management of volunteer soybean EnlistTM, showing selectivity to wheat. The isolated application of dicamba and the associations of pyroxsulam with metribuzin and metribuzin with metsulfuron represent alternatives for selective management of volunteer Enlist™ soybean in wheat, in addition to efficiently controlling wild radish in post-emergence. Root-knot nematodes (RKN) are important plant pathogens affecting rice in South-East Asia and southern Brazil in irrigated rice fields. In order to investigate the specific diversity of RKN associated with irrigated rice in southern Brazil, Meloidogyne spp. from Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Santa Catarina (SC) States were characterised biochemically by esterase (Est) and malate dehydrogenase (Mdh) phenotypes. Fifty-six Meloidogyne spp. populations were detected in 48% of rice samples, and a total of five esterase phenotypes were identified, four of which presented as drawn-out bands in different positions. In RS State, M. graminicola (Est VS1), Meloidogyne sp. 2 (Est R2) and Meloidogyne sp. 3 (Est R3) were identified, which corresponded to ca 80, 40 and 10% of samples, respectively. In SC State, M. graminicola, M. javanica (Est J3), Meloidogyne sp. 1 (Est R1), Meloidogyne sp. 2 and Meloidogyne sp. 3 accounted for ca 93.75, 12.50, 62.50, 12.25 and 6.25% of samples, respectively. The esterase phenotypes R1, R2 and R3 are new, never having been detected on rice before. Meloidogyne javanica showed a N1 Mdh phenotype (Rm: 1.0), while four other populations exhibited a N1a (Rm: 1.4) phenotype. All populations were tested with two SCAR markers specific to M. graminicola, which confirmed that, but no specificity was obtained with both markers in relation to the atypical populations analysed. Sequencing and phylogenetic analyses of internal transcribed spacer-rRNA (ITS) were performed to infer the phylogenetic relationship of these atypical Meloidogyne spp. populations. Meloidogyne sp. 1 grouped with the mitotic parthenogenetic species, while the two others (Meloidogyne sp. 2 and sp. 3) clustered with M. graminicola and other meiotic parthenogenetic species. Taken together, these data highlight the unprecedented specific diversity of RKN associated with irrigated rice in southern Brazil. Dose-response experiments were carried out to evaluate the sensitivity of imidazolinone-resistant red rice to nonselective herbicides currently used in rice-soybean rotation in Rio Grande do Sul. Two red rice biotypes previously identified as resistant and susceptible to the imidazolinone herbicides were treated with imazapic plus imazapic, glyphosate and glufosinate under nine herbicide rates. A non-linear log-logistic analysis was used to estimate the herbicide rate that provided 50% red rice control and dry weight reduction (GR50). Imidazolinone-resistant red rice exhibited greater GR50 values than imidazolinone-susceptible biotype for imazapyr plus imazapic. In contrast, both imidazolinoneresistant and susceptible red rice showed similar GR50 values for glyphosate and glufosinate. These results indicate that glyphosate and glufosinate effectively control imidazolinone-resistant red rice at similar herbicide rates used to control imidazolinonesusceptible; however, integrated weed management practices must be adopted in rice-soybean rotation to delay resistance evolution of red rice populations to glyphosate and glufosinate. The aim of this study was to determine changes in the photosynthetic process and the inhibition of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3- phosphate synthase (EPSPs) by shikimic acid accumulation, after application of the herbicide glyphosate in four biotypes of C. sumatrensis collected in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Therefore, the experiments were conducted under greenhouse and laboratory, assessing plant biomass, photosynthesis rate, transpiration and water use efficiency; the amount of shikimic acid was calculated for each treatment. Glyphosate application reduced growth and affected the photosynthesis rate and water use efficiency of the biotypes differentially, and the resistant biotype had small interference from glyphosate, while physiological parameters of the susceptible biotype were deeply affected by the herbicide. Susceptible biotypes had higher shikimic acid accumulation than the resistant biotype, indicating differential sensitivity of EPSPs to glyphosate between resistant and sensitive biotypes. The use of glyphosate to chemical control of Cutgrass and Peruvian Watergrass with the use of non-selective herbicides has not been efficient. In this context, the investigation of chemical control of these species to glyphosate is very important, since there are not available commercially selective herbicides to control these species in post-emergence of irrigated rice. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of Cutgrass and Peruvian Watergrass to different formulations of glyphosate. Two factorial experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, in the first the A factor were two formulations of glyhposate (potassium and isopropylamine salt) and the B factor were nine doses of the herbicide (zero; 175; 350; 700; 1400; 2800; 5600; 11200; 22400g a.e. ha-1). In the second experiment, the A factor were two species (Leersia hexandra and Luziola peruviana), the B factor were three formulations of glyphosate (amoniun, potassium e isopropylamine salt) and the C factor were nine doses of herbicides (zero; 87,5; 175; 350; 700; 1400; 2800; 5600; 11200g a.e. ha-1). Based on the results obtained, it was observed that these species exhibit differential susceptibility to glyphosate. Moreover, Leersia hexandra was more sensitive when compared to Luziola peruviana. Glyphosate formulation infl uenced control efficiency, where Transorb Roundup R® and Roundup Ultra® provided the best control of the two species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The herbicides that use the Clearfield Rice System can persist in the environment and damage non-tolerant rice sowing in rotation. This damage can variable in intensity, depending on, among other factors, of the upward movement of the herbicide to the absorption region of the plant root system. The aim of this research was to verify the effect of the height of the water table in upward movement of the herbicide in intact soil cores. Intact soil cores were collected with PVC tubes 15cm in diameter and 30cm deep. The herbicide was applied on the bottom of the samples, and it was simulated water table depths (0, 5, 10, 15 and 25cm of the soil surface). The intact samples remained in this condition for a period of 150 days, when they were cut into 5cm slices (0-5 a 25-30cm) and bioassay were performed with the non-tolerant rice cultivar. With the results it was conclude that there is upward movement of the formulated mixture of imazethapyr and imazapic herbicides along the paddy soil profile during the fallow and this transport is greater when the water table is located closer to the soil surface. The upward movement by dilution of the herbicide in the soil solution occurs by mass flow through the water transported by capillarity to superflcial sites of soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Barnyard grass (Echinochloa sp.) is one of the main rice weeds. Knowledge of its emergence can support management measures. The present study models barnyard grass emergence at different flooded rice sowing periods. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the hydrothermal time model in estimating barnyard grass emergence is analyzed. Field emergence was monitored three times a week during two sowing times (October and November) and two growing seasons (2017/18 and 2018/19), in rice sown and unsown areas. Data were converted to cumulative emergence based on total seedlings. Soil temperature and moisture data were used to determine hydrothermal time. The sowing in October led to a continuous emergence of barnyard grass, while the sowing in late November led to different emergence rates. The highest emergence rates of barnyard grass occur in the first sowing time. The hydrothermal time model is adequate to estimate barnyard grass emergence in both sowing times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
