As El Niño is predicted to become stronger and more frequent in the future, it is crucial to understand how El Niño-induced droughts will affect tropical forests. Although many studies have focused on tropical rainforests, there is a paucity of studies on seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs), particularly in Asia, and few studies have focused on seedling dynamics, which are expected to be strongly affected by drought. Seedlings in SDTFs are generally more drought-tolerant than those in the rainforests, and the effects of El Niño-induced droughts may differ between SDTF and tropical rainforests. In this study, we explored the impact of El Niño-induced drought at an SDTF in northern Thailand by monitoring the seedling dynamics at monthly intervals for 7 years, including a period of strong El Niño. The effects were compared between two forest types in an SDTF: a deciduous dipterocarp forest (DDF), dominated by deciduous species, and an adjacent lower montane forest (LMF) with more evergreen species. El Niño-induced drought increased seedling mortality in both the forest types. The effect of drought was stronger in evergreen than in the deciduous species, resulting in higher mortality in the LMF during El Niño. However, El Niño increased seedling recruitment only in the DDF, mainly because of the massive recruitment of the deciduous oak, Quercus brandisiana (Fagaceae), which compensated for the mortality of seedlings in the DDF. As a result, El Niño increased seedling density in the DDF and decreased it in the LMF. This is the first long-term study to identify the differences in the impacts of El Niño on seedlings between the two forest types, and two leaf habits, evergreen and deciduous, in Southeast Asia. Our findings suggest that future climate change may alter the species composition and spatial distribution of seedlings in Asian SDTFs.

Tree size shapes forest carbon dynamics and determines how trees interact with their environment, including a changing climate. Here, we conduct the first global analysis of among-site differences in how aboveground biomass stocks and fluxes are distributed with tree size. We analyzed repeat tree censuses from 25 large-scale (4-52 ha) forest plots spanning a broad climatic range over five continents to characterize how aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality vary with tree diameter. We examined how the median, dispersion, and skewness of these size-related distributions vary with mean annual temperature and precipitation. In warmer forests, aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality were more broadly distributed with respect to tree size. In warmer and wetter forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity were more right skewed, with a long tail towards large trees. Small trees (1-10 cm diameter) contributed more to productivity and mortality than to biomass, highlighting the importance of including these trees in analyses of forest dynamics. Our findings provide an improved characterization of climate-driven forest differences in the size structure of aboveground biomass and dynamics of that biomass, as well as refined benchmarks for capturing climate influences in vegetation demographic models.

AimGlobal forests and their structural and functional features are shaped by many mechanisms that impact tree vital rates. Although many studies have tried to quantify how specific mechanisms influence vital rates, their relative importance among forests remains unclear. We aimed to assess the patterns of variation in vital rates among species and in space and time across forests to understand and provide a baseline for expectations of the relative importance of the different mechanisms in different contexts.Location21 forest plots worldwide.Time period1981-2021Major taxa studiedWoody plantsMethodsWe developed a conceptual and statistical framework (variance partitioning of multilevel models) that attributes the variability in growth, mortality, and recruitment to variation in species, space, and time, and their interactions, which we refer to asorganising principles(OPs). We applied it to data from 21 forest plots covering more than 2.9 million trees of approximately 6,500 species.ResultsDifferences among species, thespeciesOP, were a major source of variability in tree vital rates, explaining 28-33% of demographic variance alone, and in interaction withspace14-17%, totalling 40-43%. Models with small spatial grain sizes (quadrats at 5 × 5 m) retained most of the spatial OP, but a large proportion of variance remained unexplained (31-55%). The average variability among species declined with species richness across forests, indicating that diverse forests featured smaller interspecific differences in vital rates.Main conclusionsDecomposing variance in vital rates into the proposed OPs showed that taxonomy is crucial to predictions and understanding of tree demography. Our framework has a high potential for identifying the structuring mechanisms of global forest dynamics as it highlights the most promising avenues for future research both in terms of understanding the relative contributions of mechanisms to forest demography and diversity and for improving projections of forest ecosystems.

Researchers expect carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns as an alternative to metallic wiring. However, the electrical properties of CNT yarns remain relatively low, necessitating further improvement. In this study, we fabricated CNT yarns by dry-spinning and performed several post-synthesis treatments to enhance the electrical properties. Polymer solution impregnation increased the electrical conductivity 1.82 × and the current capacity 1.58 × , attributable to densification of the CNT yarn bundles. Graphitization (GT) increased the electrical conductivity 2.58 × and the current capacity 1.83 × , attributable to purification of the crystalline structure. Iodinemonochloride/dichloromethane (ICl/DCM) doping increased the electrical conductivity 1.79 × and the current capacity 1.31 × , attributable to the increased electron carrier density. We achieved further enhancement by a two-step treatment—GT and ICl/DCM doping—resulting in a 4.88 × increase in conductivity and reaches a maximum of 5.12 × 105 S/m. We observed greater doping effects after GT, which increased the electrical conductivity 1.89 × , whereas doping for pristine CNT yarn only increased the electrical conductivity 1.79 × . The X-ray photoelectron spectra of CNT yarn in each step indicated a positive relationship between the peak area of the π–π∗ transition component and the electrical conductivity. Therefore, we hypothesize that purification of the crystalline structure increases the electron carrier density by doping.

Various diterpene synthases have been functionally identified in cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). These are the homologs of ent-copalyl diphosphate (ent-CDP) synthase and ent-kaurene synthase (KS) that are responsible for the biosynthesis of gibberellins, diterpenoid phytohormones. We isolated a cDNA encoding full-length OsKSL12, a previously uncharacterized KS like (KSL) enzyme that consists of a β-domain and an α-domain with an active center, but lacks an N-terminal γ-domain. Functional analysis using a bacterial expression system showed that recombinant OsKSL12 converted ent-CDP into ent-manool or ent-13-epi-manool. Comparative genomics revealed that functional OsKSL12 homologs exist in diverse wild species in the Oryzeae—Oryza nivara (Oryza rufipogon), Oryza coarctata, Oryza granulata, Leersia perrieri, and Leersia tisseranti. KSL12 homologs in O. granulata, L. perrieri, and L. tisseranti preferentially reacted with geranylgeranyl diphosphate rather than ent-CDP, resulting in geranyllinalool rather than ent-manool or ent-13-epi-manool as the main product, meaning that KSL12 functionally diversified during evolution in the Oryzeae.

1. Organisms of all species must balance their allocation to growth, survival and recruitment. Among tree species, evolution has resulted in different life-history strategies for partitioning resources to these key demographic processes. Life-history strategies in tropical forests have often been shown to align along a trade-off between fast growth and high survival, that is, the well-known fast–slow continuum. In addition, an orthogonal trade-off has been proposed between tall stature—resulting from fast growth and high survival—and recruitment success, that is, a stature−recruitment trade-off. However, it is not clear whether these two independent dimensions of life-history variation structure tropical forests worldwide. 2. We used data from 13 large-scale and long-term tropical forest monitoring plots in three continents to explore the principal trade-offs in annual growth, survival and recruitment as well as tree stature. These forests included relatively undisturbed forests as well as typhoon-disturbed forests. Life-history variation in 12 forests was structured by two orthogonal trade-offs, the growth−survival trade-off and the stature−recruitment trade-off. Pairwise Procrustes analysis revealed a high similarity of demographic relationships among forests. The small deviations were related to differences between African and Asian plots. 3. Synthesis. The fast–slow continuum and tree stature are two independent dimensions structuring many, but not all tropical tree communities. Our discovery of the consistency of demographic trade-offs and life-history strategies across different forest types from three continents substantially improves our ability to predict tropical forest dynamics worldwide.

Background Although there are many negative reports on coffee consumption and the occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF), several factors are involved in the metabolism of caffeine, and it is possible that the response to caffeine changes with age. We present a case in which Apple Watch was useful in detecting very brief paroxysmal AF that was thought to be triggered by coffee consumption. Case summary The patient was a man in his early 60s. He often drank a cup of coffee after breakfast. At some point, after drinking coffee and commuting to work, he noticed palpitations. He got an Apple Watch, and when he recorded his electrocardiogram when the symptoms occurred, he found that he had AF. During the following month, the frequency of AF was examined in relation to whether coffee was consumed in the morning. Twenty days of 28 days, coffee was consumed, and of these, AF was observed on 8 days (40%). In the 8 days when he did not drink coffee, there was no AF. For the next 28 days, the coffee was changed to decaffeinated coffee and the frequency of AF was examined. AF was observed on 5 of the 24 days when decaffeinated coffee was consumed (21%). AF did not occur on the 4 days when decaffeinated coffee was not consumed. Discussion These results may indicate that AF was significantly more common on days when coffee was consumed. In the case of frequent but short-lasting AF, it is worth considering whether coffee consumption may be a trigger.

The growth and survival of individual trees determine the physical structure of a forest with important consequences for forest function. However, given the diversity of tree species and forest biomes, quantifying the multitude of demographic strategies within and across forests and the way that they translate into forest structure and function remains a significant challenge. Here, we quantify the demographic rates of 1961 tree species from temperate and tropical forests and evaluate how demographic diversity (DD) and demographic composition (DC) differ across forests, and how these differences in demography relate to species richness, aboveground biomass (AGB), and carbon residence time. We find wide variation in DD and DC across forest plots, patterns that are not explained by species richness or climate variables alone. There is no evidence that DD has an effect on either AGB or carbon residence time. Rather, the DC of forests, specifically the relative abundance of large statured species, predicted both biomass and carbon residence time. Our results demonstrate the distinct DCs of globally distributed forests, reflecting biogeography, recent history, and current plot conditions. Linking the DC of forests to resilience or vulnerability to climate change, will improve the precision and accuracy of predictions of future forest composition, structure, and function.

Bilirubin oxidase from Myrothecium verrucaria (mBOD) is a promising enzyme for catalyzing the four-electron reduction of dioxygen into water and realizes direct electron transfer (DET)-type bioelectrocatalysis. It has two N-linked glycans (N-glycans), and N472 and N482 are known as binding sites. Both binding sites located on opposite side of the type I (T1) Cu, which is the electrode-active site of BOD. We investigated the effect of N-glycans on DET-type bioelectrocatalysis by performing electrochemical measurements using electrodes with controlled surface charges. Two types of BODs with different N-glycans, mBOD and recombinant BOD overexpressed in Pichia pastoris (pBOD), and their deglycosylated forms (dg-mBOD and dg-pBOD) were used in this study. Kinetic analysis of the steady-state catalytic waves revealed that both size and composition of N-glycans affected the orientation of adsorbed BODs on the electrodes. Interestingly, the most favorable orientation was achieved with pBOD, which has the largest N-glycans. Furthermore, the effect of the orientation control by the N-glycans is cooperative with electrostatic interaction.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) produce contrasting plant-soil feedbacks, but how these feedbacks are constrained by lithology is poorly understood. We investigated the hypothesis that lithological drivers of soil fertility filter plant resource economic strategies in ways that influence the relative fitness of trees with AMF or EMF symbioses in a Bornean rain forest containing species with both mycorrhizal strategies. Using forest inventory data on 1245 tree species, we found that although AMF-hosting trees had greater relative dominance on all soil types, with declining lithological soil fertility EMF-hosting trees became more dominant. Data on 13 leaf traits and wood density for a total of 150 species showed that variation was almost always associated with soil type, whereas for six leaf traits (structural properties; carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus ratios, nitrogen isotopes), variation was also associated with mycorrhizal strategy. EMF-hosting species had slower leaf economics than AMF-hosts, demonstrating the central role of mycorrhizal symbiosis in plant resource economies. At the global scale, climate has been shown to shape forest mycorrhizal composition, but here we show that in communities it depends on soil lithology, suggesting scale-dependent abiotic factors influence feedbacks underlying the relative fitness of different mycorrhizal strategies.

Many fagaceous species mature acorns during the second autumn after flowering and are called “2‐year species.” In 2‐year species of subgenus Cyclobalanopsis (genus Quercus), alternate bearing (2‐year seed production cycle) is prominent, but this has not been reported for other 2‐year species in the genera of Lithocarpus and Castanopsis. We tested the hypothesis that the difference in reproduction of 2‐year species is linked to the weevil, Mechoris ursulus. After ovipositing on acorns, this insect cuts the shoots to which the acorns are attached. We examined the host preference of M. ursulus and reproductive traits of fagaceous 2‐year species. Percentage infestation was remarkably high in the subgenus Cyclobalanopsis, whereas Lithocarpus and Castanopsis species suffered almost no damage. Furthermore, unlike Lithocarpus and Castanopsis, most of the acorn‐producing shoots in subgenus Cyclobalanopsis had no current‐year shoots. The clear relationship suggests that alternate bearing in subgenus Cyclobalanopsis is an adaptation to the shoot‐cutting behavior of M. ursulus.

When Darwin visited the Galapagos archipelago, he observed that, in spite of the islands’ physical similarity, members of species that had dispersed to them recently were beginning to diverge from each other. He postulated that these divergences must have resulted primarily from interactions with sets of other species that had also diverged across these otherwise similar islands. By extrapolation, if Darwin is correct, such complex interactions must be driving species divergences across all ecosystems. However, many current general ecological theories that predict observed distributions of species in ecosystems do not take the details of between-species interactions into account. Here we quantify, in sixteen forest diversity plots (FDPs) worldwide, highly significant negative density-dependent (NDD) components of both conspecific and heterospecific between-tree interactions that affect the trees’ distributions, growth, recruitment, and mortality. These interactions decline smoothly in significance with increasing physical distance between trees. They also tend to decline in significance with increasing phylogenetic distance between the trees, but each FDP exhibits its own unique pattern of exceptions to this overall decline. Unique patterns of between-species interactions in ecosystems, of the general type that Darwin postulated, are likely to have contributed to the exceptions. We test the power of our null-model method by using a deliberately modified data set, and show that the method easily identifies the modifications. We examine how some of the exceptions, at the Wind River (USA) FDP, reveal new details of a known allelopathic effect of one of the Wind River gymnosperm species. Finally, we explore how similar analyses can be used to investigate details of many types of interactions in these complex ecosystems, and can provide clues to the evolution of these interactions., Author summary Worldwide, ecosystems are collapsing or in danger of collapse, but the precise causes of these collapses are often unknown. Observational and experimental evidence shows that all ecosystems are characterized by strong interactions between and among species, and that these webs of interactions can be important contributors to the preservation of ecosystem diversity. But many of the interactions–such as those involving pathogenic microorganisms and the chemical defenses that are mounted by their prey–are not easily identified and analyzed in ecosystems that may have hundreds or thousands of species. Here we use our equal-area-annulus analytical method to examine census data from over three million trees in forest plots from around the world. We show how the method can be used to flag pairs and groups of species that exhibit unusual levels of interaction and that are likely on further investigation to yield information about their causative mechanisms. We give a detailed example showing how some of these interactions can be traced to defense mechanisms that are possessed by one of the tree species. We explore how our method can be used to identify the between-species interactions that play the largest roles in the maintenance of ecosystems and their diversity.

Our thermodynamic study indicated that low temperature power cycle using amine-CO2 fluid can obtain the performance equal to or higher than that of the current organic Rankine cycle. We designed a 10 kW test equipment. We set high temperature heat source is hot water at the temperature of 90°C and the flow rate of 8,200kg/h, which is a coolant from a gas engine. The heat and mass balance of the equipment was calculated thermodynamically. The result showed the power of 10.5kW and the system efficiency of 7.3 per cent at the the amine – CO2 fluid flow rate of 1,000kg/h, and the turbine expansion ratio of 4.8. The preliminary estimation shows as follows. The diameter and rotational speed of the turbine blade are 0.115m and 54,400min-1, respectively. The number, width, and length of the recuperator plates are 20, 117mm, and 835mm, respectively. The height and cross sectional area of the absorption bed are 0.35m and 0.027m2, respectively.

Low temperature heat below 473K is produced massively. Kalina cycle using NH3 and Organic Rankine cycle using HFC-245fa can generate electricity from the low temperature heat. However, the former is toxic and corrosive and the latter has a high GWP value, which is required to reduce by the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol and the Regulation (EU) No 517/2014. The thermodynamic simulation shows the maximum power of the low temperature cycle using 30 mass% MDEA-H2O solution (CO2/MDEA mole ratio: 0.15) is equal to that of the Organic Rankine cycle using HFC245fa. The experimental results suggest the low temperature cycle using the MDEA-based solution containing carbon dioxide is available as a low temperature cycle.

ForestGEO is a network of scientists and long-term forest dynamics plots (FDPs) spanning the Earth's major forest types. ForestGEO's mission is to advance understanding of the diversity and dynamics of forests and to strengthen global capacity for forest science research. ForestGEO is unique among forest plot networks in its large-scale plot dimensions, censusing of all stems ≥1 cm in diameter, inclusion of tropical, temperate and boreal forests, and investigation of additional biotic (e.g., arthropods) and abiotic (e.g., soils) drivers, which together provide a holistic view of forest functioning. The 71 FDPs in 27 countries include approximately 7.33 million living trees and about 12,000 species, representing 20% of the world's known tree diversity. With >1300 published papers, ForestGEO researchers have made significant contributions in two fundamental areas: species coexistence and diversity, and ecosystem functioning. Specifically, defining the major biotic and abiotic controls on the distribution and coexistence of species and functional types and on variation in species' demography has led to improved understanding of how the multiple dimensions of forest diversity are structured across space and time and how this diversity relates to the processes controlling the role of forests in the Earth system. Nevertheless, knowledge gaps remain that impede our ability to predict how forest diversity and function will respond to climate change and other stressors. Meeting these global research challenges requires major advances in standardizing taxonomy of tropical species, resolving the main drivers of forest dynamics, and integrating plot-based ground and remote sensing observations to scale up estimates of forest diversity and function, coupled with improved predictive models. However, they cannot be met without greater financial commitment to sustain the long-term research of ForestGEO and other forest plot networks, greatly expanded scientific capacity across the world's forested nations, and increased collaboration and integration among research networks and disciplines addressing forest science.

Hybridization between the introduced and native plants may enhance invasiveness, especially in asexually reproducing species. Hybrid apomictic dandelions between native (Taraxacum platycarpum and T. japonicum) and exotic (T. officinale) species are distributed widely throughout Japan. To estimate the origin(s) and dispersal of the hybrids, we investigated the hybridization rate and genotypic diversity in mixed populations of T. japonicum, T. officinale and their hybrids at two green parks in western Japan. Among the plants identified as exotics from flower morphology, 86–96% were hybrids by genetic analysis. Genetic data with simple sequence repeat markers revealed a high clonal diversity of the hybrid both within and between populations, indicating multiple origins. A hybrid seed was found from among the 1891 seeds collected from T. japonicum in the parks, indicating ongoing hybridization in the field. T. officinale and hybrids were genetically differentiated between the two parks independent of the ploidy level; the allele frequency of T. officinale and tri- and tetraploid hybrids were similar within each park but different between the two parks. This suggests that the origins of hybrids were similar within the park but different between the parks. Overall, our results suggest that hybridization, including backcross, is an ongoing process, and that genetically diverse hybrids with various origins have been spreading in western Japan, probably because hybridization enhanced invasiveness at native habitat.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of functional mitral regurgitation (FMR), preserved or reduced ejection fraction (EF), and ischemic or nonischemic origin with outcomes in patients discharged alive after hospitalization for acute decompensated heart failure (HF). Of the 4,842 patients enrolled in the Acute Decompensated Heart Failure Syndromes (ATTEND) registry, 3,357 patients were evaluated to assess the association of FMR, preserved or reduced EF, and ischemic or nonischemic origin with the primary end point (all-cause death and readmission for HF after discharge). At the time of discharge, FMR was assessed semiquantitatively (classified as none, mild, or moderate to severe) by color Doppler analysis of the regurgitant jet area. According to multivariable analysis, in the ischemic group, either mild or moderate to severe FMR in patients with a preserved EF had a significantly higher risk of the primary end point than patients without FMR (hazard ratio [HR] 1.60; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12 to 2.29; p = 0.010 and HR 1.98; 95% CI 1.30 to 3.01; p = 0.001, respectively). In patients with reduced EF with an ischemic origin, only moderate to severe FMR was associated with a significantly higher risk of the primary end point (HR 1.67; 95% CI 1.11 to 2.50; p = 0.014). In the nonischemic group, there was no significant association between FMR and the primary end point in patients with either a preserved or reduced EF. In conclusion, among patients with acute decompensated HF with a preserved or reduced EF, the association of FMR with adverse outcomes may differ between patients who had an ischemic or nonischemic origin of HF.

The reproductive capacities of dioecious plant species may be limited by severe pollen limitation and narrow seed shadows for the two reasons. First, they are unable to self‐pollinate, and seed production occurs only with pollinator movement from males to females. Second, only 50% of the individuals in populations contribute to seed production. Despite these handicaps, dioecious plants maintain their populations in plant communities with cooccurring cosexual plants, and no substantial difference in population growth rates has been found between dioecious and cosexual plants. Hence, dioecious plants are thought to mitigate these disadvantages by adopting ecological traits, such as insect pollination, animal‐dispersed fleshy fruits, and precocious flowering. We studied the relationship between flowering and plant size in 30 woody species with different sex expressions, leaf habits, fruit types, and maximum plant sizes. The study site was located in an evergreen broad‐leaved forest on the island of Honshu, Japan. A phylogenetic linear regression model showed that dioecious species tended to mature at smaller sizes than did cosexual taxa. At the population level, given equal plant densities and reproductive efforts, the precocity of dioecious plants could serve as one of the factors that mitigate the limitations of pollen and seed‐shadow handicaps by increasing the density of reproductive individuals in the population. At the individual level, smaller size of onset of flowering may play a role in enhancing reproductive success over a lifetime by increasing reproductive opportunities. We discussed the possible effect of the relationship between precocity and some ecological traits of dioecious plants, such as small flowers pollinated by unspecialized insects, fleshy fruit dispersed by animals, and their preferential occurrence in the tropics and in island habitats. The universality of precocity among dioecious plants should be investigated in diverse plant communities. Such studies will increase our understanding of the evolution of plant breeding systems.

We investigated clonal structure, growth pattern and colonization through sprouting in the invasive tree species Triadica sebifera on Mt. Mikasa, Nara City, Japan. Genets of T. sebifera were identified by microsatellite DNA analysis. The age of stems was determined by counting annual growth rings. In a 25 × 60-m plot, we found 214 genets among 315 stems ≥130 cm in height. Of these, 23 genets were multistemmed. Numbers of stems on a genet increased with increasing genet age. The size, shape and number of stems indicated that several genets adopted a guerilla growth strategy in which stems are widely spaced along roots. Only one genet seemed to adopt a phalanx growth strategy characterized by high stem density within limited areas. Older stems occurred only in the vicinity of the parental stems of genets. The lowland tropical forests of Southeast Asia are dominated by a single family of canopy and emergent trees, the Dipterocarpaceae. The seeds of dipterocarps are gravity or gyration dispersed. Short distance and limited seed dispersal via these mechanisms result in the aggregation of related individuals and strong fine-scale spatial genetic structure (FSGS). In logged and fragmented forests, where gene flow may be disrupted, tree species with strong FSGS are predicted to exhibit increased inbreeding, which consequently can erode genetic diversity, fitness and might limit the potential for natural regeneration of dipterocarps. Developing a set of indirect operational indicators for FSGS provides a solid basis for informing conservation and management of forest genetic resources in logged forests. Our main objective was to use an information theoretic approach to identify these indicators of FSGS in dipterocarps. We quantify FSGS in 19 dipterocarp species across four forest sites in Malaysian Borneo, India and the Seychelles. We detected FSGS in 15 (79%) of our study species, most of which displayed significant inbreeding. Our results suggest that wood density and flower size offer useful indicators of FSGS. We propose some simple guidelines to allow forest managers to account for FSGS when planning approaches to maintain genetically diverse stands in logged dipterocarp forests. The integration of improved understanding of genetic processes is essential for conserving forest tree genetic resources and ensuring the resilience of logged forests.

We present the case of a 29-year-old woman with right renal artery stenosis caused by fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) who underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT)-guided percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty. Using OCT, we could clearly observe intimal fibroplasia and medial hyperplasia that was indicative of FMD. Based on diagnosis of FMD by OCT, this patient was treated with plain old balloon angioplasty that resulted in adequate luminal opening without intimal dissection confirmed on final angiography and OCT.

Thin-film electronic devices can be integrated with skin for health monitoring and/or for interfacing with machines. Minimal invasiveness is highly desirable when applying wearable electronics directly onto human skin. However, manufacturing such on-skin electronics on planar substrates results in limited gas permeability. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically investigate their long-term physiological and psychological effects. As a demonstration of substrate-free electronics, here we show the successful fabrication of inflammation-free, highly gas-permeable, ultrathin, lightweight and stretchable sensors that can be directly laminated onto human skin for long periods of time, realized with a conductive nanomesh structure. A one-week skin patch test revealed that the risk of inflammation caused by on-skin sensors can be significantly suppressed by using the nanomesh sensors. Furthermore, a wireless system that can detect touch, temperature and pressure is successfully demonstrated using a nanomesh with excellent mechanical durability. In addition, electromyogram recordings were successfully taken with minimal discomfort to the user.

The structures and electronic states in polymorphs (Forms I–IV) of PVDF were calculated by the density functional theory at PBE0/cc-pVTZ level. The calculated lattice constants agreed well with experimental values. Derived electronic and vibrational frequencies corresponded closely with the experimental vXPS and IR/Raman spectra, respectively. The amounts of spontaneous polarization in the polar crystal forms (I, III, and IV) were calculated. Those for Forms III and IV were determined for the first time.

Printable elastic conductors promise large-area stretchable sensor/actuator networks for healthcare, wearables and robotics. Elastomers with metal nanoparticles are one of the best approaches to achieve high performance, but large-area utilization is limited by difficulties in their processability. Here we report a printable elastic conductor containing Ag nanoparticles that are formed in situ, solely by mixing micrometre-sized Ag flakes, fluorine rubbers, and surfactant. Our printable elastic composites exhibit conductivity higher than 4,000 S cm-1 (highest value: 6,168 S cm-1) at 0% strain, and 935 S cm-1 when stretched up to 400%. Ag nanoparticle formation is influenced by the surfactant, heating processes, and elastomer molecular weight, resulting in a drastic improvement of conductivity. Fully printed sensor networks for stretchable robots are demonstrated, sensing pressure and temperature accurately, even when stretched over 250%.

The relationship between species richness and ecosystem function, as measured by productivity or biomass, is of long-standing theoretical and practical interest in ecology. This is especially true for forests, which represent a majority of global biomass, productivity and biodiversity. Here, we conduct an analysis of relationships between tree species richness, biomass and productivity in 25 forest plots of area 8–50 ha from across the world. The data were collected using standardized protocols, obviating the need to correct for methodological differences that plague many studies on this topic. We found that at very small spatial grains (0.04 ha) species richness was generally positively related to productivity and biomass within plots, with a doubling of species richness corresponding to an average 48% increase in productivity and 53% increase in biomass. At larger spatial grains (0.25 ha, 1 ha), results were mixed, with negative relationships becoming more common. The results were qualitatively similar but much weaker when we controlled for stem density: at the 0.04 ha spatial grain, a doubling of species richness corresponded to a 5% increase in productivity and 7% increase in biomass. Productivity and biomass were themselves almost always positively related at all spatial grains. Synthesis. This is the first cross-site study of the effect of tree species richness on forest biomass and productivity that systematically varies spatial grain within a controlled methodology. The scale-dependent results are consistent with theoretical models in which sampling effects and niche complementarity dominate at small scales, while environmental gradients drive patterns at large scales. Our study shows that the relationship of tree species richness with biomass and productivity changes qualitatively when moving from scales typical of forest surveys (0.04 ha) to slightly larger scales (0.25 and 1 ha). This needs to be recognized in forest conservation policy and management.

Aims A better understanding of wood litter decomposition is essential for predicting responses of forest ecosystems to global climate change. Recent studies suggest that chemical properties of wood litters, rather than physical ones such as wood density, are more important for inter - We found large variation in the wood decomposition rate (a 49-fold range), suggesting that we need to consider this variation when cal- culating community-level carbon dynamics of tropical rain forests. The physical traits of wood, i.e. wood density and water perme- ability, were related to wood decomposition rate and its pattern over time. Decomposition half-time related positively and negatively to initial wood density and water permeability, respectively. The time-dependent- rate model fitted better for 18 species (56% of the study species) that had higher water permeabilities than the others, suggesting that micelle porosity in wood relates to temporal changes in decomposition rate.

Background Pocket-sized echocardiography may serve as an initial tool to screen for aortic stenosis (AS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a novel and simple method using pocket-sized echocardiography to screen for AS. Methods Subjects ( n = 130) with systolic ejection murmur or known AS were studied. After physical examination, each aortic cusp's opening was visually scored using pocket-sized echocardiography as follows: 0 = not restricted, 1 = restricted, or 2 = severely restricted. The sum of the scores was defined as the visual AS score. On the basis of high-end echocardiography, an aortic valve area index 2 /m 2 and an aortic valve area index of 0.60 to 0.85 cm 2 /m 2 were considered to indicate severe and moderate AS, respectively. Results For diagnosing severe AS ( n = 27), a visual AS score ≥4 had sensitivity of 85% and specificity of 89%. For diagnosing moderate to severe AS ( n = 57), a visual AS score ≥3 had sensitivity of 84% and specificity of 90%. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for diagnosing severe and moderate to severe AS with a visual AS score (0.946 and 0.936, respectively) were slightly larger than those for a skilled physical examination (0.917 and 0.898, respectively) ( P = NS for both) but were significantly larger than for an aortic valve calcification score also obtained using pocket-sized echocardiography (areas under the curve, 0.816 [ P = .0015] and 0.827 [ P = .0001], respectively). Conclusions A novel and simple method using pocket-sized echocardiography is useful for rapid grading of AS in subjects with systolic ejection murmur.

AimsThe effects of inotropic agents on left ventricular (LV) synchrony in heart failure patients are still unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dobutamine on LV mechanical dyssynchrony and LV systolic performance in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and a narrow QRS using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE).Methods and resultsThirty-three patients with idiopathic DCM and a narrow QRS underwent low-dose dobutamine stress echocardiography (LDSE) with RT3DE. A time-global LV volume curve and time-regional LV volume curves were derived from RT3DE. Regional LV stroke volumes were summed in each stage, and the dobutamine-induced increase in the sum of regional LV stroke volumes was considered as the sum of regional contractile reserve. Systolic dyssynchrony index (SDI) was calculated as follows: (standard deviation of time to minimal volume for regional LV segments)×100/RR duration. Among the 33 patients, low-dose dobutamine increased global LV stroke volume (SV) in 28 (85%), but decreased global LVSV in the remainder (15%). Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is well-established as a negative risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and its anti-oxidant property has been attributed mainly to the HDL-bound enzyme paraoxonase-1 (PON-1). Recently, myeloperoxidase (MPO), a pro-oxidant enzyme released from activated neutrophils, has been shown to alter the atheroprotective function of HDL to a dysfunctional form. This study investigated the relationship between plasma MPO and serum PON-1 levels in patients with stable (SAP) and unstable angina pectoris (UAP). Plasma MPO levels and serum PON-1 concentration/activity were measured in patients with SAP (n = 226), UAP (n = 151) and in control subjects (n = 99). Plasma MPO levels in UAP patients were significantly higher than those in SAP patients or in control subjects (UAP, 21.6[16.7-44.6]; SAP, 19.3[15.7-29.1]; control, 15.9[14.7-18.7] ng/mL; P < 0.0001). Serum PON-1 concentrations in UAP and SAP patients were significantly lower than those in control subjects (UAP, 55.6[45.9-69.7]; SAP, 55.0[46.9-64.9]; control, 62.5[51.1-78.8] μg/mL; P = 0.0002). Plasma MPO levels showed a weak inverse correlation with serum PON-1 concentrations in all subjects (R = -0.163, P < 0.0005). Moreover, in women, plasma MPO levels showed a significant inverse correlation with serum PON-1 concentrations and PON-arylesterase activity in SAP (concentration: R = -0.537, P < 0.0001; arylesterase-activity: R = -0.469, P < 0.001) and UAP (concentration: R = -0.340, P < 0.05; arylesterase-activity: R = -0.350, P < 0.05) patients, but not in men. This study demonstrates that plasma MPO levels have a significant inverse correlation with PON-1 levels, especially in women, in SAP and UAP patients, and suggests that an imbalance between pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants may contribute to the progression of coronary plaque instability
