Nel corso della lunga campagna militare che Alfonso il Magnanimo condusse per la conquista di Napoli e del Mezzogiorno (1421-23 e 1435-42), la Sicilia svolse un ruolo fondamentale per il finanziamento della guerra, soprattutto grazie alle risorse provenienti dal regio demanio, ovvero quelle frutto delle imposte indirette e del commercio granario. Per vie delle crescenti e urgenti esigenze economiche della Corona, nell’ultima fase del conflitto Alfonso il Magnanimo ricorse in maniera più intensa alla tassazione diretta, promovendo nel contempo diverse altre strategie fiscali alternative. Tale processo, come si discute in questo articolo, emerse con particolare forza nel 1441-42, quando il sovrano elaborò un inedito programma fiscale per fare fronte al pagamento della condotta di Niccolò Piccinino e di diverse lettere di cambio. Da una parte, si richiese alle città demaniali e baronali dell’isola il pagamento di una esosa composizione per i loro supposti crimini di usura, estendendo poi tale richiesta economica a tutti i sudditi del regno nella forma di una subventio generalis; dall’altra parte, si provvide all’imposizione di un prestito forzoso ad alcuni membri delle élite politiche, urbane e religiose dell’isola.

ABSTRACT Mitoviruses in the family Mitoviridae are the mitochondria-replicating “naked RNA viruses” with genomes encoding only the replicase RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and prevalent across fungi, plants, and invertebrates. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the subphylum Glomeromycotina are obligate plant symbionts that deliver water and nutrients to the host. We discovered distinct mitoviruses in glomeromycotinian fungi, namely “large duamitovirus,” encoding unusually large RdRp with a unique N-terminal motif that is endogenized in some host genomes. More than 400 viral sequences similar to the large duamitoviruses are present in metatranscriptome databases. They are globally distributed in soil ecosystems, consistent with the cosmopolitan distribution of glomeromycotinian fungi, and formed the most basal clade of the Mitoviridae in phylogenetic analysis. Given that glomeromycotinian fungi are the only confirmed hosts of these viruses, we propose the hypothesis that large duamitoviruses are the most ancestral lineage of the Mitoviridae that have been maintained exclusively in glomeromycotinian fungi.

2D materials raised extensive attention for physical-, chemical- and wearable-sensors, among others. The principal reason is the outstanding capability of 2D materials to detect specific analytes and physical stimuli through diverse responses. After a short introduction to 2D materials, a critical explanation of sensors containing 2D materials is provided to justify their applications. Following by a description of the most relevant transduction mechanisms of 2D materials employed for sensing. This review explores their advancement and implementation in sensing during the last decade in several areas, such as physical, chemical, bio and wearable sensors. Different types of 2D materials, including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), 2D carbides and nitrides of transition metals (MXenes) and black phosphorus (BP), are considered.

Objective:Our aim is to test the Nahoum Index as a support in the cephalometric study of vertical dimension and therapeutic orientation in adult patients suffering from Class II malocclusion, deep bite, or short face syndrome.Methods:Twenty-three patients with molar Class II and an overbite >4 mm were stratified into two groups: orthodontic (G2) and surgical orthodontic (G1). The ANB angle and Nahoum Index were calculated for cephalometric tracing pre- and post-treatment. The difference between the ANB and Nahoum Index values were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software.Results:In G1, the Nahoum Index decreased from 0.954 to 0.797, and the ANB angle decreased from 5.2° to 3.2°. In G2, the Nahoum Index decreased from 0.825 to 0.817, and the ANB angle decreased from 4.4° to 4°.Conclusion:In G1, the difference between before and after treatment was significant for the Nahoum Index only. The difference between before and after values was not significant in the G2 group. It is possible to indicate the Nahoum Index of 0.934 as the limit value in case of which a patient may be treated with orthodontics only. This limit is the opposite of the limit proposed by Nahoum for vertical excess cases and respect the same interval. Therefore, we can consider the range 0.81-0.934 to indicate borderline patients, and >0.934 to indicate surgical patients. If the ratio is close to the normal value as 0.81, the treatment will be orthodontic; if it is further increased, the treatment will be surgical.

In this paper the first example of using C-dots (CDs) as sensing nanomaterial for monitoring low concentrations of NO2 in ambient air is reported. In the logic to support a green circular economy, CDs were prepared from a natural low cost precursor consisting in olive solid waste (OSW) by a simple pyrolysis process combined with chemical oxidation. Characterization data showed the formation of spherical CDs with dimensions in the narrow size range from 0.5 to 5 nm and charged with functional groups (COO- (carboxylate), C-O-C (epoxide) and C-OH (hydroxyl) imprinting excellent water colloidal dispersion. The nanomaterial was used to fabricate and test a conductometric gas sensor (CDs-sensor) that was found to exhibit excellent performances in terms of high and selective response to sub-ppm concentration of NO2 at low temperature (150 °C), low limit of detection (LOD) of 50 ppb, good reproducibility and stability over use and aging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example reported in the literature of CDs high performances gas sensing material. Results here presented pave the way for a new class of a carbon nanomaterial for gas sensing to be applied in the field of environmental monitoring.

Objective:Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is a heterogeneous pathological condition characterized by the coexistence of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and cleft palate, resulting in upper airway tract obstruction. Among the treatment modalities, the orthodontic approach is one part of the comprehensive care of those patients and will be present in the treatment modalities during all the growth period of the child.Methods:All patients with PRS observed in the period 2013-2017 were treated with a definite functional approach. The results were retrospectively analyzed with regard to functional outcome, total treatment time, and number of plates provided for a single patient.Results:In all the patients, the indicated treatment protocol has been applied as early impression and plate supply, stimulation of bottle feeding with the use of the plate, eventual substitution of the plate if no more adequate to the transverse and sagittal growth of the palate, and continuing the use until the surgical closure of the cleft. All the patients showed a positive outcome to the proposed treatment approach, evaluated with regard to the incidence of feeding improvement and weight gain, to the limit for the surgical phase, in the absence of adverse effects.Conclusion:The use of a functional obturator plate, removing functional alterations to mandibular growth, reduces and, in some cases, eliminates the need for surgical intervention. As also stated in the literature, if despite the presence of the plate nutritional problems persist, immediate different surgical approaches, mainly mandibular osteodistraction, become necessary.

Abstract Background Small RNAs (sRNAs) are short non-coding RNA molecules (20–30 nt) that regulate gene expression at transcriptional or post-transcriptional levels in many eukaryotic organisms, through a mechanism known as RNA interference (RNAi). Recent studies have highlighted that they are also involved in cross-kingdom communication: sRNAs can move across the contact surfaces from “donor” to “receiver” organisms and, once in the host cells of the receiver, they can target specific mRNAs, leading to a modulation of host metabolic pathways and defense responses. Very little is known about RNAi mechanism and sRNAs occurrence in Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF), an important component of the plant root microbiota that provide several benefits to host plants, such as improved mineral uptake and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress. Results Taking advantage of the available genomic resources for the AMF Rhizophagus irregularis we described its putative RNAi machinery, which is characterized by a single Dicer-like (DCL) gene and an unusual expansion of Argonaute-like (AGO-like) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene families. In silico investigations of previously published transcriptomic data and experimental assays carried out in this work provided evidence of gene expression for most of the identified sequences. Focusing on the symbiosis between R. irregularis and the model plant Medicago truncatula, we characterized the fungal sRNA population, highlighting the occurrence of an active sRNA-generating pathway and the presence of microRNA-like sequences. In silico analyses, supported by host plant degradome data, revealed that several fungal sRNAs have the potential to target M. truncatula transcripts, including some specific mRNA already shown to be modulated in roots upon AMF colonization. Conclusions The identification of RNAi-related genes, together with the characterization of the sRNAs population, suggest that R. irregularis is equipped with a functional sRNA-generating pathway. Moreover, the in silico analysis predicted 237 plant transcripts as putative targets of specific fungal sRNAs suggesting that cross-kingdom post-transcriptional gene silencing may occur during AMF colonization.

RNA interference (RNAi) is a key regulatory pathway of gene expression in almost all eukaryotes. This mechanism relies on short non-coding RNA molecules (sRNAs) to recognize in a sequence-specific manner DNA or RNA targets leading to transcriptional or post-transcriptional gene silencing. To date, the fundamental role of sRNAs in the regulation of development, stress responses, defense against viruses and mobile elements, and cross-kingdom interactions has been extensively studied in a number of biological systems. However, the knowledge of the “RNAi world” in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is still limited. AMF are obligate mutualistic endosymbionts of plants, able to provide several benefits to their partners, from improved mineral nutrition to stress tolerance. Here we described the RNAi-related genes of the AMF Gigaspora margarita and characterized, through sRNA sequencing, its complex small RNAome, considering the possible genetic sources and targets of the sRNAs. G. margarita indeed is a mosaic of different genomes since it hosts endobacteria, RNA viruses, and non-integrated DNA fragments corresponding to mitovirus sequences. Our findings show that G. margarita is equipped with a complete set of RNAi-related genes characterized by the expansion of the Argonaute-like (AGO-like) gene family that seems a common trait of AMF. With regards to sRNAs, we detected populations of sRNA reads mapping to nuclear, mitochondrial, and viral genomes that share similar features (25-nt long and 5′-end uracil read enrichments), and that clearly differ from sRNAs of endobacterial origin. Furthermore, the annotation of nuclear loci producing sRNAs suggests the occurrence of different sRNA-generating processes. In silico analyses indicate that the most abundant G. margarita sRNAs, including those of viral origin, could target transcripts in the host plant, through a hypothetical cross-kingdom RNAi.

Glyco-gold nanoparticles combine in a single entity the peculiar properties of gold nanoparticles with the biological activity of carbohydrates. The result is an exciting nanosystem, able to mimic the natural multivalent presentation of saccharide moieties and to exploit the peculiar optical properties of the metallic core. In this review, we present recent advances on glyco-gold nanoparticle applications in different biological fields, highlighting the key parameters which inspire the glyco nanoparticle design.

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) quantification has recently been introduced to guide treatment in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) patients. No information is currently available on use of HBsAg levels to guide HBV immune globulin (HBIG) administration after liver transplantation (LT). We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected database. Patients were included if: adults (≥18 years); recipients of a primary liver graft; HBsAg-positive and HBV DNA-negative at transplantation; hepatitis C and/or HIV-negative; not transplanted for fulminant hepatic failure; on nucleoside analogues. All patients were administered 30,000 IU HBIG, perioperatively, and hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) was tested at day 7, 14, 28, and monthly thereafter. A further 30,000 HBIG were administered if HBsAb 100 IU/mL on day 7. The primary endpoint was the efficacy of HBIG as a percentage of patients achieving HBsAg

Agli inizi del secolo XVI, Giovan Luca Barberi, Maestro notaio della Real Cancelleria del Regno di Sicilia, fu protagonista di una lunga e intensa inquisitio, per conto di Ferdinando II d’Aragona, sul patrimonio regio dell’isola e sui possedimenti della feudalità locale. Questa celebre indagine è stata al centro di alcuni importanti studi che ne hanno messo principalmente in evidenza gli aspetti giurisprudenziali e le conseguenze politiche sull’isola. Tuttavia, se analizzata in una “chiave” amministrativa, l’opera di Barberi (i cosiddetti capibrevi) risulta innanzi tutto come una straordinaria impresa archivistica, frutto di una profonda e complessa indagine tra le scritture e i depositi documentari del Regno, e strettamente connessa al ruolo di Maestro notaio che lo stesso Barberi ebbe all’interno della Cancelleria siciliana. Il presente studio si pone quindi l’obiettivo, da una parte, di descrivere le dinamiche che, tra la fine del Trecento e il secolo successivo, permearono il funzionamento della Real Cancelleria dell’isola e i compiti del suo personale, nonché i sistemi di produzione, registrazione e conservazione delle scritture; dall’altra parte, alla luce di quanto detto in merito al funzionamento della Cancelleria siciliana, si vuole proporre una rielaborazione complessiva dell’interpretazione dell’inquisitio barberiana, illustrando nel dettaglio come il Maestro notaio si sia servito degli archivi del Regno e come abbia portato avanti la propria indagine, ovvero in che modo abbia utilizzato e organizzato le informazioni a sua disposizione per compilare i capibrevi.

Background: In the last 3 decades, liposuction has become a mainstay of the plastic surgeon’s armamentarium, and the technique has evolved considerably. We retrospectively review all of the liposuction procedures that we performed over the past 20 years. Methods: The principles of superficial 3-dimensional liposuction with respect to preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management of patients scheduled to undergo liposuction of the hips, flanks, and thighs were described. Results: A total of 4000 patient charts were reviewed. The results indicated that 50 patients experienced a postsurgical seroma that was resolved after syringe aspirations. One patient developed a major mycobacterial infection that was resolved after antibiotic therapy. Twenty patients complained of minor asymmetries that were corrected 6 months later under local anesthesia; 18 patients suffered from minor skin irregularities, which improved after lipofilling. In 6 cases, transient hyperpigmentation (6–12 months) of the skin before the use of suction drainages in the removal of large adiposities in patients with light skin was experienced, and in 2 cases, transient paresthesia (8 and 10 months) was experienced. No skin necrosis, deep vein thrombosis, or death occurred. Conclusions: If performed correctly, 3-dimensional superficial liposuction of the trunk, hips, and thighs can yield very satisfying outcomes because of the excellent contour and the enhanced skin retraction provided by the thin cutaneous adipose flap. Three-dimensional liposuction is a reliable method with proven results. A careful application of the technique combined with accurate surgical planning, a thorough preoperative explanation of real expectations, and postoperative care is crucial.

This work aims to assess the impact of maintenance-oriented design on a production line in the pharmaceutical industry, which includes operations in a clean room. The case study analyses the downtimes of a production line of large volume parental solutions. The results obtained at the end of an appropriate period of observation were used to identify the main problems, in terms of maintenance time. Some of the critical issues were overcome by requiring that part of the production line be redesigned by a company specialized in the design of clean room lines. In this context, the focus of the case study is not on the technical aspects of maintenance-oriented design application, but its consequences in terms of the increase in performance. The performance of the new production line was analysed and compared with that obtained in the first phase of the study. This comparison allowed us to estimate and quantify the achieved improvements referring to system availability and consequently to a production increase quantified at more than 110,000 units per year. The impact of the maintenance-oriented design was also evaluated from an economic point of view. In particular, the production increase obtained and the corresponding economic advantages were evaluated. Through this comparison, it was possible to estimate the payback period for the investment of redesign, quantified in less than six years.

To meet the requirements and specifications coming from the surrounding society, the socio-economic progress involves the development of new products, new technologies, new organizational forms etc. Companies are constantly looking for methods or procedures to improve production and income; but, the enterprise growth is strictly linked to the reliability of its internal processes. Internal failures can often cause loss of image. The goal of the present work is the development of an algorithm able to optimize the production line of a pharmaceutical firm. In particular, the proposed weighing procedure allows both checking missing components in packaging and minimizing false rejects of packages by dynamic scales. The main problem is the presence at the same time, in the same package, of different components with different variable weights. The consequence is uncertainty in recognizing the absence of one or more components.
