Background & Aims: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on health in countries of every income level. While much is known about risk factors for COVID-19 severity, less is known about the relationship between COVID related risk perceptions and behaviors, particularly in low-income settings. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between existing health status and COVID-19 risk perceptions and behaviors in Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. Methods: Data for this study came from a cross-sectional survey conducted simultaneously among 1158 adults in Sierra Leone and 1154 in Zimbabwe during July and August of 2022. Respondents were recruited from among communities served by the Christian Health Association of Sierra Leone (CHASL) and Zimbabwe Association of Church-Related Hospitals (ZACH), both members of the Africa Christian Health Associations Network (ACHAP). Results: The relationship between health status and COVID-19 risk perceptions and behaviors varied significantly by health condition. Cardiovascular disease was significantly associated with heightened perceptions of COVID-19 risk, heightened perceived safety of COVID vaccines, and subsequent greater vaccine acceptance while cancer was likewise statistically significant in each of lower perceived susceptibility, perceived safety, and vaccination uptake. Similarly, obesity was associated with both lower perceived susceptibility of COVID-19 and decreased perceived safety of COVID vaccines. Conclusion: Results suggest that the association between health conditions and COVID perceptions and behaviors is neither clear nor consistent across a variety of NCDs. Hence, findings from this study may inform public health interventions aimed at reducing COVID-19 morbidity and mortality, including increasing vaccine acceptance and uptake in Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. Further, findings potentially have broader implications for understanding how health status is associated with COVID-19 risk perceptions in other LMICs.

- Abstract
The recruiting component is a critical piece to the success of collegiate athletic programs. Small colleges that rely on athletic programs as a branch of enrollment management find coaches and athletic directors continuously searching for the most talented student-athletes to increase the chances of winning games. Along with talent, coaches must decide if student-athletes are a good fit for the institutional culture. Understanding the college choice process of student-athletes is essential for college coaches at small, private, NCAA Division I institutions; therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the college choice process of student-athletes at small, private, NCAA Division I institutions. This qualitative case study investigated the college choice process of 12 student-athletes who were in the fall semester of their sophomore year at a small, private, NCAA Division I institution. Semi-structured individual and focus group interviews were guided by Hossler and Gallagher's (1987) three-phase college choice model and conducted with the 12 student-athletes. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the data and the results suggested there are influential factors in the predisposition, search, and choice phases. The findings from study revealed academic rigor, proximity to home, student-to-faculty ratio, welcoming campus community, athletic program dynamic and culture, and affordability emerged as most influential factors in the final decision for student-athletes. The production of cleaning supplies, however, results in the generation of large quantities of polluted wastewater commonly contaminated with surfactants such as lauryl sodium sulphate (LAS). There is an actual need to seek factors intensifying the treatment processes of the wastewaters from industry cleaning supplies. The new methods which not required extension of existing plants or building very expensive reactors are still searching. In recent years much more attention has been directed to the possibility of improvement of waste water treatment by static magnetic field as auxiliary. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of constant magnetic field as well as the integration of this technique with the famous technique used for wastewater treatment which is coagulation by clorate aluminium as a novel method for treatment. This new method has been found to be a useful method for removing turbidity, total solids (TS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from chemically treated wastewater. doi: https://doi.org/10.18540/2446941602022016116

Parents play an important role in developing the eating behaviors of their children by adopting specific parenting practices. As the prevalence of obesity is high amongst African American adolescents, investigations into associations of specific parenting practices and adolescents’ eating behaviors are essential. In this exploratory study, 14 African American parent–adolescent dyads were interviewed to characterize the influence of eight different parenting practices on the consumption of three main food categories (dairy, fruits and vegetables, and unhealthy snacks). The results revealed that authoritarian parenting practices were correlated with a higher BMI percentile in adolescents, whereas modeling and monitoring are correlated with a higher parent BMI. In addition, reasoning, monitoring, modeling, and authoritative parenting practices were associated with less unhealthy snack consumption among adolescents. Reasoning and monitoring were the only parenting practices associated with higher fruit and vegetable consumption. Finally, a significant correlation was found between eating fruits and vegetables and unhealthy snacks and the location of eating. In conclusion, different parenting practices and environmental factors may impact BMI and food consumption of African American dyads. The results of this study can be used to guide improvement in, and/or development of, nutritional education interventions considering the cultural differences of racial minorities.

Obesity is more prevalent among racial minority children in the United States, as compared to White children. Parenting practices can impact the development of children’s eating behaviors and habits. In this study, we investigated the relationships among racial/ethnic backgrounds, parenting practices and styles, and eating behaviors in adolescents. Fifty-one parent–adolescent dyads were interviewed to characterize parenting practices and styles, as well as the consumption of dairy, fruits and vegetables, and unhealthy snacks. Height and weight were measured to calculate parent BMI and adolescent BMI-for-age percentiles. Three parenting practice categories—modeling, authoritative, and authoritarian—were found to be related to race/ethnicity. A higher score in authoritarian parenting practices was related to higher BMI percentiles among African American adolescents, whereas a higher score in monitoring practices was related to lower BMI percentiles among non-Hispanic White adolescents. Modeling, reasoning, and monitoring led to higher consumption of fruits and vegetables among adolescents; however, the consumption of unhealthy snacks was higher with rule-setting and lower with reasoning and authoritative practices. Finally, an analysis of the relationships between environmental factors and snack intake showed that adolescents consumed significantly more unhealthy snacks when performing other activities while eating. In conclusion, the findings from this study suggest that families’ racial heritages are related to their parenting practices, BMI percentiles, and their adolescents’ food consumption and eating behaviors. The results of this study can be used to develop and improve adolescent nutrition education and interventions with consideration of their racial/ethnic backgrounds.

There are literature reports of anabolic-androgenic steroid-induced rhabdomyolysis. Here we describe a case of a patient presenting with acute confusion and rhabdomyolysis, following an unwitnessed seizure. He had a background of alcohol excess. Three days into his admission he developed dysphagia. At first, the patient denied the use of any medication or drugs. However, he later revealed he had used the anabolic steroid 'Anavar' (oxandrolone) for 60 consecutive days ending a month prior to his admission. The brief seizure was itself unlikely to have resulted in the severity of his rhabdomyolysis. Thus, we report a likely case of delayed rhabdomyolysis secondary to anabolic steroid use. The oropharyngeal dysphagia may be secondary to the rhabdomyolysis; there have been cases of this described in literature.

- Author
-
DA SILVA, Alex Anderson Calbino
- Abstract

Araucaria forest is a sub-tropical component of the Atlantic Forest Biome, occurring between 18 and 30° S latitude, and 500-1,800 m altitude in Southern and Southwestern Brazil and Northwestern Argentina. In recent history (Twentieth century), this forest has undergone non-sustainable exploitation and reduction in area dedicated to agricultural and forestry use. However, smallholders continue using several resources from this forest, even adapting management systems. The main system is geared toward the production of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) under araucaria trees (Araucaria angustifolia), which holds economic, cultural, and social relevance for thousands of farmers. Seeking evidence of domestication and conservation of the resources managed in this system, we compared different landscapes on the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina in Southern Brazil. Focusing on three species-yerba mate, araucaria and caraguatá (Bromelia antiacantha)-we characterized management practices (interviews and guided tours), demographic structure (permanent plots in farming zones and in a protected area), and genetic diversity in populations from the same places. Demographic structure and genetic diversity from different landscapes were compared to evaluate the system potential for conservation. The results indicated that the three species are intentionally promoted with practices of protection, transplanting and/or selection, in different ways and with different functions (caraguatá hedges, yerba mate harvesting, and collection of pinhões-seed like nuts-of araucaria). Landscapes are managed for yerba mate harvesting and cattle raising, for both economic and cultural reasons, with a consequent reduction in the density of most other plant species. In all cases the genetic diversity of the species was high for most of the sampled properties, and the set of farmers' populations did not differ from the protected area. The set of populations of each species operates as a metapopulation and local management practices contribute to conservation. Thus, the farmers' management systems and practices maintain the landscape with productive forest fragments, favoring the conservation-by-use of these species. The system requires these management practices, which bring about changes in various species and are motivated by cultural and economic factors, in order to maintain the landscapes domesticated.
Aiming at evaluating the IEEE 802.3az standard for energy savings, this work analyzes its efficiency and effectiveness in the network infrastructure of the University of Brasilia. While there is a great commitment in pursuing alternatives to increased energy efficiency in computing areas, computer networks usually lack a proper attention when it comes to energy savings. The IEEE 802.3az standard is the most promising effort in providing energy savings on under-utilized Ethernet links using UTP cables. This work evaluates the IEEE 802.3az standard and its benefits in terms of energy savings. In this context, different tests have been performed to check the operation and behavior of the Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) in various situations. The results show that EEE can provide energy savings up to 30% in the evaluated settings. The use of the computing resources at UnB and the characteristic of network traffic provides insights on locations having the greatest EEE potential gains. The obtained results may serve as input for decision making regarding the allocation of the equipment to support the EEE. Gains in estimated energy savings for equipment, during idleness periods, reached 0.142 kWh, besides a reduction in the energy consumption prediction to 2.57 times less than conventional switches currently used.

Malaysia like many other Asian countries was affected by the 1997 Financial Crisis. During this Financial Crisis, many companies succumbed. Pomerleano (1998) found that leverage of the companies if unchecked can be detrimental to the health of the company. He concluded that excess leverage at the micro level and also poor profitability resulted in the 1997 East Asian crisis. The aim of this study is to analyze the survival-ability of a sample of Malaysian public listed companies (PLCs) by analyzing the impact of financing decision of the sample firms. Both financing and operating leverage, along with the performance of the companies is evaluated. This study adopts a non-parametric approach to measure the company’s survival-ability in terms of their financing decision for their production process. In order to achieve this main objective, the study attempts (i) to identify, using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), the survivors among the PLCs based on their financing decisions and (ii) to analyze the effects of leverage on the survival of the PLCs. This article contributes to current literature in two areas, namely; the evaluation of the survival-ability of the PLCs via their financing decisions. Secondly, the use of financial and operating liability leverage in evaluating survival-ability of the companies.

In this study, the bioreduction of chromium (VI) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) were obtained using a mixed culture of microorganisms originating from the tannery industry. The influence of an electromagnetic field on the reduction of chromium (VI), together with the removal of COD and total chromium, were evaluated. Batch reactors were used, one in the presence of an electromagnetic field and another without exposure to the field. The bioreduction was conducted with various initial concentrations of chromium (VI) (50, 100, 150, and 200 mg L−1) at different electromagnetic field frequencies (1, 2, 5, and 10 Hz) with different initial volumes of the effluent (300, 500, and 1000 mL). Using an initial concentration of chromium (VI) of 100 mg L−1 in 500 mL of effluent at a frequency of 5 Hz, the maximum chromium (VI) bioreduction was 100% after 8 h, but the total removal of chromium was 38%. Using the same conditions but with a volume of 1000 mL, the same reduction of chromium (VI) was achieved, but there was a need for a longer processing time, ∼14 h. When using concentrations above 100 mg L−1, the same efficiency for the bioreduction of chromium (VI) was not obtained relative to the experiments performed without the presence of an electromagnetic field. The concentration of cells in both reactors remained almost constant over time, except when a frequency higher than 5 Hz was used, where we could observe the occurrence of cell death. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 34: 88–98, 2015

- Abstract

Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais This work was to study the influence of the magnetic field on the reduction of hexavalent chromium, removal of COD and total chromium, addition of cell growth in batch (batch reactor), using a mixed culture from located in a tanning city of Franca-SP (AMCOA). The influence of static magnetic field generated by a device that produces an electric current through a conductor, producing a magnetic field around the conductor, like a magnet. This equipment produces a magnetic field pulsed square wave of constant intensity and frequency. In the first step of adjusting the mixed cultures of chromium VI obtained a promising response. Thereafter, a preliminary test was performed to analyze the behavior of the influence of the magnetic field in the reduction of chromium VI and diameter of the reactor, obtaining 71% reduction of chromium VI with a larger diameter, without the presence of magnetic field has seen a reduction of 53%, with an initial concentration of 100 mg/l of chromium and a time of 4 hours of process. In other stages of the project, performing the tests with different frequencies of the magnetic field (1,2,5 and 10 Hz) and doing an analysis related to cell death of micro-organisms, showed that for frequencies of 10 Hz, there was cell death presents some cultures, which was confirmed in a lower frequency. The results were satisfactory when used in a magnetic field frequency of 5 Hz, maximal reduction of chromium VI reducing the time about 4 hours of processing, better removal of COD and total chromium using a volume of 500 ml and concentration of 100 mg/l initial chromium. Checking the influence of different frequency magnetic field, the initial effluent volumes (300 and 1000 ml) and initial concentration of chromium VI (50, 150 and 200 mg/l). The higher the initial concentration the lower the chromium reduction of chromium VI, larger volumes and a reduction of chromium VI and removal of COD and total chromium is not as significant as the use of smaller volumes.
The Araucaria angustifolia is the only species of its genus with natural occurrence in Brazil where its forest originally occupied about 20 million hectares. Due to the species economic importance an intense process of predatory logging was generated, resulting in currently fragmented and impoverished remnants totaling percentages between 21.9 to 26.9% of its original area in the state of Santa Catarina. Currently, the species is found on several endegered epecies lists, including the IUCN. This anthropogenic exploitation together with environmental conditions provide differences between areas regarding the demographic structure and especially in regards to the average size of the plants. These differences can be seen in the plateaus of Santa Catarina when compared with populations under different soil and climatic conditions and different historical use and conservation. Differences between these populations can also be observed in relation to pinhão production, with some populations producing more than others and some alternating production between years while others#production remains stable between years. These variations are considered moderate, which leads to a non-synchronized production on a regional scale. The production of pinhão differs between locations and between years, however, it is not possible to state that the species has years of greater or lesser production at a regional level, which does not follow the concept of masting. In regards to the supply of pinhão, this distribution has a high degree of seasonality, concentrated around a specific period (between May and June) and differentiated between populations and between years. It was also observed that both early and late varieties late occur at low frequencies and the amount of pinhão legally available confer a strong selection pressure on the "São Jose",Caiová and #Macaco# varieties, resulting in possible impairment of regeneration. Although these populations differ significantly in relation to the form of individuals, the production and supply of pinhão, between these populations is of low genetic divergency, which reinforces the importance of these as keepers of genetic diversity, as well as its ability to present a strong reference to genetic conservation in the short-term and long-term. Furthermore, the results indicate the efficiency of the system used for the production of pinhões by the farmers as a process of on farm conservation for Araucaria angustifolia. Thus, there is a need to establish complementarities between the use of the pinhão as a source of income and food and the demands inherent to the species. Public policy associated with the pinhão collection processes may favor the conservation of the species through its use.

- Abstract
This article presents the findings on the study that determines the factors which influence financial literacy of bankers around Kuala Lumpur in term of Islamic financial products. The Governor of Central Bank of Malaysia pointed out several years ago that in order to make Islamic financial products acceptable to a wider spectrum of investors and business people alike, financial literacy on Islamic financial products need to be enhanced. This is to facilitate transactions, with a clear understanding and appreciation of the unique characteristics and features of Islamic Finance and its real economic value. However, to date there is scarcity in the studies of Islamic financial literacy in Malaysia. This is proven when Kayed (2008) queries if there are any attempts by the research community to assess levels of Islamic financial literacy in various Muslim communities. In addition, Ahmad (2010) also points out the importance of Islamic financial literacy. These issues have actually motivated the current study to review available literatures on financial literacy mainly focusing on the Islamic financial literacy. The objectives of this study are (i) determine if the bankers possess adequate financial literacy to undertake financial decision with respect to Islamic financial products and services, and (ii) identify the significant factors that influence Islamic financial literacy among bankers. Factor analysis is used in order to identify those factors that indicate banker’s Islamic financial literacy. The findings reveal that nine factors determine banker’s financial literacy on Islamic financial products and services.
