Apsidal precession in stellar binaries is the main non-Keplerian dynamical effect impacting the radial-velocities of a binary star system. Its presence can notably hide the presence of orbiting circumbinary planets because many fitting algorithms assume perfectly Keplerian motion. To first order, apsidal precession ($\dot{\omega}$) can be accounted for by adding a linear term to the usual Keplerian model. We include apsidal precession in the kima package, an orbital fitter designed to detect and characterise planets from radial velocity data. In this paper, we detail this and other additions to kima that improve fitting for stellar binaries and circumbinary planets including corrections from general relativity. We then demonstrate that fitting for $\dot{\omega}$ can improve the detection sensitivity to circumbinary exoplanets by up to an order of magnitude in some circumstances, particularly in the case of multi-planetary systems. In addition, we apply the algorithm to several real systems, producing a new measurement of aspidal precession in KOI-126 (a tight triple system), and a detection of $\dot{\omega}$ in the Kepler-16 circumbinary system. Although apsidal precession is detected for Kepler-16, it does not have a large effect on the detection limit or the planetary parameters. Tidal dissipation plays an important role in the dynamical evolution of moons, planets, stars and compact remnants. The interesting complexity originates from the interplay between the internal structure and external tidal forcing. Recent and upcoming observing missions of exoplanets and stars in the Galaxy help to provide constraints on the physics of tidal dissipation. It is timely to develop new N-body codes, which allow for experimentation with various tidal models and numerical implementations. We present the open-source N-body code TIDYMESS, which stands for ``TIdal DYnamics of Multi-body ExtraSolar Systems''. This code implements a creep deformation law for the bodies, parametrized by their fluid Love numbers and fluid relaxation times. Due to tidal and centrifugal deformations, we approximate the general shape of a body to be an ellipsoid. We calculate the associated gravitational field to quadruple order, from which we derive the gravitational accelerations and torques. The equations of motion for the orbits, spins and deformations are integrated directly using a fourth-order integration method based on a symplectic composition. We implement a novel integration method for the deformations, which allows for a time step solely dependent on the orbits, and not on the spin periods or fluid relaxation times. This feature greatly speeds up the calculations, while also improving the consistency when comparing different tidal regimes. We demonstrate the capabilities and performance of TIDYMESS, particularly in the niche regime of parameter space where orbits are chaotic and tides become non-linear., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

We revisit the two body problem, where one body can be deformed under the action of tides raised by the companion. Tidal deformation and consequent dissipation result in spin and orbital evolution of the system. In general, the equations of motion are derived from the tidal potential developed in Fourier series expressed in terms of Keplerian elliptical elements, so that the variation of dissipation with amplitude and frequency can be examined. However, this method introduces multiple index summations and some orbital elements depend on the chosen frame, which is prone to confusion and errors. Here, we develop the quadrupole tidal potential solely in a series of Hansen coefficients, which are widely used in celestial mechanics and depend just on the eccentricity. We derive the secular equations of motion in a vectorial formalism, which is frame independent and valid for any rheological model. We provide expressions for a single average over the mean anomaly and for an additional average over the argument of the pericentre. These equations are suitable to model the long-term evolution of a large variety of systems and configurations, from planet satellite to stellar binaries. The time step criterion plays a crucial role in direct N-body codes. If not chosen carefully, it will cause a secular drift in the energy error. Shared, adaptive time step criteria commonly adopt the minimum pairwise time step, which suffers from discontinuities in the time evolution of the time step. This has a large impact on the functioning of time step symmetrisation algorithms. We provide new demonstrations of previous findings that a smooth and weighted average over all pairwise time steps in the N-body system, improves the level of energy conservation. Furthermore, we compare the performance of 27 different time step criteria, by considering 3 methods for weighting time steps and 9 symmetrisation methods. We present performance tests for strongly chaotic few-body systems, including unstable triples, giant planets in a resonant chain, and the current Solar System. We find that the harmonic symmetrisation methods (methods A3 and B3 in our notation) are the most robust, in the sense that the symmetrised time step remains close to the time step function. Furthermore, based on our Solar System experiment, we find that our new weighting method based on direct pairwise averaging (method W2 in our notation), is slightly preferred over the other methods., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 13 pages, 6 figures

Radio astronomy and Space Infrastructures in the Azores have a great scientific and industrial interest because they benefit from a unique geographical location in the middle of the North Atlantic allowing a vast improvement in the sky coverage. This fact obviously has a very high added value for: i) the establishment of space tracking and communications networks for the emergent global small satellite fleets ii) it is invaluable to connect the radio astronomy infrastructure networks in Africa, Europe and America continents using Very Large Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) techniques, iii) it allows excellent potential for monitoring space debris and Near Earth Objects (NEOs). There is in S. Miguel island a 32-metre SATCOM antenna that could be integrated in advanced VLBI networks and be capable of additional Deep Space Network ground support. This paper explores the space science opportunities offered by the upgrade of the S. Miguel 32-metre SATCOM antenna into a world-class infrastructure for radio astronomy and space exploration: it would enable a Deep Space Network mode and would constitute a key space facility for data production, promoting local digital infrastructure investments and the testing of cutting-edge information technologies. Its Atlantic location also enables improvements in angular resolution, provides many baseline in East-West and North-South directions connecting the emergent VLBI stations in America to Europe and Africa VLBI arrays therefore contributing for greater array imaging capabilities especially for sources or well studied fields close to or below the celestial equator, where ESO facilities, ALMA, SKA and its precursors do or will operate and observe in the coming decades., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. BEBOP is a radial-velocity survey that monitors a sample of single-lined eclipsing binaries, in search of circumbinary planets by using high-resolution spectrographs. Here, we describe and test the methods we use to identify planetary signals within the BEBOP data, and establish how we quantify our sensitivity to circumbinary planets by producing detection limits. This process is made easier and more robust by using a diffusive nested sampler. In the process of testing our methods, we notice that contrary to popular wisdom, assuming circular orbits in calculating detection limits for a radial velocity survey provides over-optimistic detection limits by up to $40\%$ in semi-amplitude with implications for all radial-velocity surveys. We perform example analyses using three BEBOP targets from our Southern HARPS survey. We demonstrate for the first time a repeated ability to reach a residual root mean squared scatter of $3~\rm m.s^{-1}$ (after removing the binary signal), and find we are sensitive to circumbinary planets with masses down to that of Neptune and Saturn, for orbital periods up to $1000~\rm days$., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Close-in planets undergo strong tidal interactions with the parent star that modify their spins and orbits. In the two-body problem, the final stage for tidal evolution is the synchronisation of the rotation and orbital periods, and the alignment of the planet spin axis with the normal to the orbit (zero planet obliquity). The orbital eccentricity is also damped to zero, but over a much longer timescale, that may exceed the lifetime of the system. For non-zero eccentricities, the rotation rate can be trapped in spin-orbit resonances that delay the evolution towards the synchronous state. Here we show that capture in some spin-orbit resonances may also excite the obliquity to high values rather than damp it to zero. Depending on the system parameters, obliquities of 60 to 80 degrees can be maintained throughout the entire lifetime of the planet. This unexpected behaviour is particularly important for Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of M-dwarf stars, as it may help to sustain temperate environments and thus more favourable conditions for life., 12 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

International audience; Close-in co-orbital planets (in a 1:1 mean motion resonance) can experience strong tidal interactions with the central star. Here, we develop an analytical model adapted to the study of the tidal evolution of those systems. We use a Hamiltonian version of the constant time-lag tidal model, which extends the Hamiltonian formalism developed for the point-mass case. We show that co-orbital systems undergoing tidal dissipation either favour the Lagrange or the anti-Lagrange configurations, depending on the system parameters. However, for all range of parameters and initial conditions, both configurations become unstable, although the timescale for the destruction of the system can be larger than the lifetime of the star. We provide an easy-to-use criterion to determine if an already known close-in exoplanet may have an undetected co-orbital companion.

We present the discovery and characterization of WASP-148, a new extrasolar system that includes at least two giant planets. The host star is a slowly rotating inactive late-G dwarf with a V=12 magnitude. The planet WASP-148b is a hot Jupiter of 0.72 R_Jup and 0.29 M_Jup that transits its host with an orbital period of 8.80 days. We found the planetary candidate with the SuperWASP photometric survey, then characterized it with the SOPHIE spectrograph. Our radial velocity measurements subsequently revealed a second planet in the system, WASP-148c, with an orbital period of 34.5 days and a minimum mass of 0.40 M_Jup. No transits of this outer planet were detected. The orbits of both planets are eccentric and fall near the 4:1 mean-motion resonances. This configuration is stable on long timescales, but induces dynamical interactions so that the orbits differ slightly from purely Keplerian orbits. In particular, WASP-148b shows transit-timing variations of typically 15 minutes, making it the first interacting system with transit-timing variations that is detected on ground-based light curves. We establish that the mutual inclination of the orbital plane of the two planets cannot be higher than 35 degrees, and the true mass of WASP-148c is below 0.60 M_Jup. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of this system that cover a time span of ten years. Celestial bodies are complex systems with the ability to get deformed by tides. Modelling accurately this process is a difficult task even for the planets of our own solar system. This is why tidal theories applied to exoplanets are often reduced to a simple formula accounting for our lack of knowledge. In this work, we identify the three minimal assumptions leading to this level of simplification. We then compare different rheologies compatible with these hypotheses and discuss their qualitative behaviour. Finally, we apply the viscous model to close-in planets and describe their rotation evolution, emphasising the apparition of spin-orbit resonances as the viscous timescale increases.

Context. HW Vir is a short-period binary that presents eclipse timing variations. Circumbinary planets have been proposed as a possible explanation, although the properties of the planets differ in each new study. Aims. Our aim is to perform robust model selection methods for eclipse timing variations (ETV) and error calculation techniques based on a frequentist approach for the case of the HW Vir system. Methods. We initially performed simultaneous light and radial velocity curve analysis to derive the masses of the binary. We then analyzed the eclipse timing variation of the system by fitting multiple models. To select the best model, we searched the confidence levels for the best model by creating an χ2 surface grid and bootstrap methods for each pair of parameters. We searched for stable orbital configurations for our adopted ETV model. Results. The masses of the binary are found as 0.413 ± 0.008 M⊙ and 0.128 ± 0.004 M⊙. Under the assumption of two light time effects superimposed on a secular change, the minimum masses of the circumbinary objects are calculated as 25.0−2.2+3.5 MJup and 13.9−0.45+0.60 MJup. The projected semi-major axes are found to be 7.8−1.0+1.4 and 4.56−0.22+0.27 au in respective order. We find that this configuration is unstable within a 3σ range on the semi-major axis and eccentricity of the outer circumbinary object.

Leleu, A., et al., Determining the architecture of multi-planetary systems is one of the cornerstones of understanding planet formation and evolution. Resonant systems are especially important as the fragility of their orbital configuration ensures that no significant scattering or collisional event has taken place since the earliest formation phase when the parent protoplanetary disc was still present. In this context, TOI-178 has been the subject of particular attention since the first TESS observations hinted at the possible presence of a near 2:3:3 resonant chain. Here we report the results of observations from CHEOPS, ESPRESSO, NGTS, and SPECULOOS with the aim of deciphering the peculiar orbital architecture of the system. We show that TOI-178 harbours at least six planets in the super-Earth to mini-Neptune regimes, with radii ranging from 1.152to 2.87Earth radii and periods of 1.91, 3.24, 6.56, 9.96, 15.23, and 20.71 days. All planets but the innermost one form a 2:4:6:9:12 chain of Laplace resonances, and the planetary densities show important variations from planet to planet, jumping from 1.02to 0.177times the Earth's density between planets c and d. Using Bayesian interior structure retrieval models, we show that the amount of gas in the planets does not vary in a monotonous way, contrary to what one would expect from simple formation and evolution models and unlike other known systems in a chain of Laplace resonances. The brightness of TOI-178 (H = 8.76 mag, J = 9.37 mag, V = 11.95 mag) allows for a precise characterisation of its orbital architecture as well as of the physical nature of the six presently known transiting planets it harbours. The peculiar orbital configuration and the diversity in average density among the planets in the system will enable the study of interior planetary structures and atmospheric evolution, providing important clues on the formation of super-Earths and mini-Neptunes., The authors acknowledge support from the Swiss NCCR PlanetS and the Swiss National Science Foundation. In order to investigate the nature and characteristics of the motions of very faint objects, a flexibly-pointed instrument capable of high astrometric accuracy is an ideal complement to current astrometric surveys and a unique tool for precision astrophysics. Such a space-based mission will push the frontier of precision astrometry from evidence of Earth-mass habitable worlds around the nearest stars, to distant Milky Way objects, and out to the Local Group of galaxies. As we enter the era of the JamesWebb Space Telescope and the new ground-based, adaptive-optics-enabled giant telescopes, by obtaining these high precision measurements on key objects that Gaia could not reach, a mission that focuses on high precision astrometry science can consolidate our theoretical understanding of the local Universe, enable extrapolation of physical processes to remote redshifts, and derive a much more consistent picture of cosmological evolution and the likely fate of our cosmos. Already several missions have been proposed to address the science case of faint objects in motion using high precision astrometry missions: NEAT proposed for the ESA M3 opportunity, micro-NEAT for the S1 opportunity, and Theia for the M4 and M5 opportunities. Additional new mission configurations adapted with technological innovations could be envisioned to pursue accurate measurements of these extremely small motions. A giant collision is believed to be at the origin of the Pluto-Charon system. As a result, the initial orbit and spins after impact may have substantially differed from those observed today. More precisely, the distance at periapse may have been shorter, subsequently expanding to its current separation by tides raised simultaneously on the two bodies. Here we provide a general 3D model to study the tidal evolution of a binary composed of two triaxial bodies orbiting a central star. We apply this model to the Pluto-Charon binary, and notice some interesting constraints on the initial system. We observe that when the eccentricity evolves to high values, the presence of the Sun prevents Charon from escaping because of Lidov-Kozai cycles. However, for a high initial obliquity for Pluto or a spin-orbit capture of Charon's rotation, the binary eccentricity is damped very efficiently. As a result, the system can maintain a moderate eccentricity throughout its evolution, even for strong tidal dissipation on Pluto., 14 pages, 10 figures

Context. LHS 1140 is an M dwarf known to host two transiting planets at orbital periods of 3.77 and 24.7 days. They were detected with HARPS and Spitzer. The external planet (LHS 1140 b) is a rocky super-Earth that is located in the middle of the habitable zone of this low-mass star. All these properties place this system at the forefront of the habitable exoplanet exploration, and it therefore constitutes a relevant case for further astrobiological studies, including atmospheric observations. Aims. We further characterize this system by improving the physical and orbital properties of the known planets, search for additional planetary-mass components in the system, and explore the possibility of co-orbitals. Methods. We collected 113 new high-precision radial velocity observations with ESPRESSO over a 1.5-yr time span with an average photon-noise precision of 1.07 m s-1. We performed an extensive analysis of the HARPS and ESPRESSO datasets and also analyzed them together with the new TESS photometry. We analyzed the Bayesian evidence of several models with different numbers of planets and orbital configurations. Results. We significantly improve our knowledge of the properties of the known planets LHS 1140 b (Pb ∼ 24.7 days) and LHS 1140 c (Pc ∼ 3.77 days). We determine new masses with a precision of 6% for LHS 1140 b (6.48 ± 0.46 Mpdbl) and 9% for LHS 1140 c (mc = 1.78 ± 0.17 Mpdbl). This reduces the uncertainties relative to previously published values by half. Although both planets have Earth-like bulk compositions, the internal structure analysis suggests that LHS 1140 b might be iron-enriched and LHS 1140 c might be a true Earth twin. In both cases, the water content is compatible to a maximum fraction of 10-12% in mass, which is equivalent to a deep ocean layer of 779 ± 650 km for the habitable-zone planet LHS 1140 b. Our results also provide evidence for a new planet candidate in the system (md = 4.8 ± 1.1Mpdbl) on a 78.9-day orbital period, which is detected through three independent methods. The analysis also allows us to discard other planets above 0.5 Mpdbl for periods shorter than 10 days and above 2 Mpdbl for periods up to one year. Finally, our co-orbital analysis discards co-orbital planets in the tadpole and horseshoe configurations of LHS 1140 b down to 1 Mpdbl with a 95% confidence level (twice better than with the previous HARPS dataset). Indications for a possible co-orbital signal in LHS 1140 c are detected in both radial velocity (alternatively explained by a high eccentricity) and photometric data (alternatively explained by systematics), however. Conclusions. The new precise measurements of the planet properties of the two transiting planets in LHS 1140 as well as the detection of the planet candidate LHS 1140 d make this system a key target for atmospheric studies of rocky worlds at different stellar irradiations., With funding from the Spanish government through the "María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence" accreditation (MDM-2017-0737)

Knowing if the inclination of a satellite with respect to the equator of its planet is primordial can give hints on its origin and its formation. However, several mechanisms are able to modify its inclination during its evolution. The orbit of a satellite evolves over time and because of the tidal dissipation its semi-major axis can notably decrease or increase. Therefore the satellite can encounter several resonances in which it can potentially be captured. Some resonances are able to modify the equatorial inclination of a satellite. Touma and Wisdom (1998) noted that a resonance called ‘eviction’ between the mean motion of the Earth and the ascending node frequency of the Moon could increase by several degrees the equatorial inclination of the early Moon and could explain the present orientation of its orbit. Yokoyama (2002) studied these resonances for Phobos and Triton and observed that several resonances of this type can increase the equatorial inclination of Phobos in the future. In this work, we study the different existing ‘eviction’ resonances to determine their possible influence on the equatorial inclination of a satellite. When a satellite goes through such a resonance, the capture is not certain and as noted by Yokoyama (2002), the probability of capture depends on several parameters as the obliquity of the planet and the interaction between other resonances. We consider the case of Phobos where we search to estimate the probability of a capture in an ‘eviction’ resonance by using an analytical Hamiltonian model and numerical simulations. This work will then notably estimate the probability that Phobos will be captured in the future in an ‘eviction’ resonance able to modify significantly its inclination and will measure the influence of the different parameters over the probability of capture. We study the spin evolution of close-in planets in compact multi-planetary systems. The rotation period of these planets is often assumed to be synchronous with the orbital period due to tidal dissipation. Here we show that planet-planet perturbations can drive the spin of these planets into non-synchronous or even chaotic states. These asynchronous configurations are possible even for nearly circular orbits and will impact the habitability of these planets. We also present a very simple method to probe the spin dynamics from the orbital perturbations.

Recent research has shown that it is beneficial in reaching a long power transformer lifespan to be in an environment with thermal stability contrary to a situation where excessive ventilation causes unneeded thermal stress. It has also been widely signaled as a source of malfunctions in power equipment the high values of humidity which create harmful condensation inside distribution stations. Most of the current solutions in the market for controlling the internal ambient conditions focus either on installing forced ventilation or increasing the amount of ventilation through the addition of more ventilation ports. This paper presents a solution to achieve an internal control of temperature and humidity by using only natural ventilation without recurring to either excessive ventilation or an active ventilation system. A prototype of an automated shutter is proposed. This prototype manages the amount of natural ventilation through the opening or closure of the ventilation grills. A working prototype was built and installed in two pilot distribution stations and the control algorithm was successfully simulated. This paper presents the prototype as well as the results of the tests carried out and the following conclusions.

Many University campuses have been decreasing the environmental impacts and costs associated with electricity consumption through the implementation of energy efficiency programs, as well as the installation of renewable energy generation. As a next step, such buildings must be equipped with technologies able to provide the flexibility required to increase the matching between renewable generation and demand in order to enable large-scale integration of renewable generation. With such objective, this paper presents a microgrid constituted by photovoltaic generation, lithium-ion battery storage, unidirectional and bi-directional charging of electric vehicles and controllers for the space conditioning systems. Such microgrid was implemented in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering - University of Coimbra, for supporting sustainable energy systems operation, ensuring the optimized integration of renewable generation in large buildings. Simultaneously, the microgrid enables the assessment of new smart grid solutions, acting as a testbed for the research developed on flexibility options for future power systems.

We report the detection of the first circumbinary planet found by TESS. The target, a known eclipsing binary, was observed in sectors 1 through 12 at 30-minute cadence and in sectors 4 through 12 at two-minute cadence. It consists of two stars with masses of 1.1 MSun and 0.3 MSun on a slightly eccentric (0.16), 14.6-day orbit, producing prominent primary eclipses and shallow secondary eclipses. The planet has a radius of ~6.9 REarth and was observed to make three transits across the primary star of roughly equal depths (~0.2%) but different durations -- a common signature of transiting circumbinary planets. Its orbit is nearly circular (e ~ 0.09) with an orbital period of 95.2 days. The orbital planes of the binary and the planet are aligned to within ~1 degree. To obtain a complete solution for the system, we combined the TESS photometry with existing ground-based radial-velocity observations in a numerical photometric-dynamical model. The system demonstrates the discovery potential of TESS for circumbinary planets, and provides further understanding of the formation and evolution of planets orbiting close binary stars., Comment: 35 pages, 21 figures, 6 tables

AU Mic is a young, active star whose transiting planet was recently detected. We report our analysis of its TESS data, where we modeled the BY Draconis type quasi-periodic rotational modulation by starspots simultaneously to the flaring activity and planetary transits. We measured a flare occurrence rate of 6.35 flares per day for flares with amplitudes in the range of $0.06\% < f_{\rm max} < 1.5\%$ of the star flux. We employed a Bayesian MCMC analysis to model the five transits of AU Mic b, improving the constraints on the planetary parameters. The planet radius of $4.07\pm0.17$~R$_{\oplus}$ and a mean density of $1.4\pm0.4$~g~cm$^{-3}$ confirms that it is a Neptune-size moderately inflated planet. While a single feature possibly due to a second planet was previously reported in the former TESS data, we report the detection of two additional transit-like events in the new TESS observations of July 2020. This represents substantial evidence for a second planet (AU Mic c) in the system. We analyzed its three transits and obtained an orbital period of $18.859019\pm0.000016$~d and a planetary radius of $3.24\pm0.16$~R$_{\oplus}$, which defines it as a warm Neptune-size planet with an expected mass in the range of 2.2~M$_{\oplus}$~$< M_{\rm c} < $25.0~M$_{\oplus}$. The two planets in the system are in near 9:4 mean-motion resonance. We show that this configuration is dynamically stable and should produce transit-timing variations (TTV). Aims. We present the obliquity measurement, that is, the angle between the normal angle of the orbital plane and the stellar spin axis, of the sub-Neptune planet HD 3167 c, which transits a bright nearby K0 star. We study the orbital architecture of this multi-planet system to understand its dynamical history. We also place constraints on the obliquity of planet d based on the geometry of the planetary system and the dynamical study of the system. Methods. New observations obtained with HARPS-N at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) were employed for our analysis. The sky-projected obliquity was measured using three different methods: the Rossiter-McLaughlin anomaly, Doppler tomography, and reloaded Rossiter-McLaughlin techniques. We performed the stability analysis of the system and investigated the dynamical interactions between the planets and the star. Results. HD 3167 c is found to be nearly polar with sky-projected obliquity, λ = −97°± 23°. This misalignment of the orbit of planet c with the spin axis of the host star is detected with 97% confidence. The analysis of the dynamics of this system yields coplanar orbits of planets c and d. It also shows that it is unlikely that the currently observed system can generate this high obliquity for planets c and d by itself. However, the polar orbits of planets c and d could be explained by the presence of an outer companion in the system. Follow-up observations of the system are required to confirm such a long-period companion.

We study the spin evolution of close-in planets in multi-body systems and present a very general formulation of the spin-orbit problem. This includes a simple way to probe the spin dynamics from the orbital perturbations, a new method for computing forced librations and tidal deformation, and general expressions for the tidal torque and capture probabilities in resonance. We show that planet-planet perturbations can drive the spin of Earth-size planets into asynchronous or chaotic states, even for nearly circular orbits. We apply our results to Mercury and to the KOI-1599 system of two super-Earths in a 3/2 mean motion resonance., 12 pages, 9 figures

Despite the existence of co-orbital bodies in the solar system, and the prediction of the formation of co-orbital planets by planetary system formation models, no co-orbital exoplanets (also called trojans) have been detected thus far. Here we study the signature of co-orbital exoplanets in transit surveys when two planet candidates in the system orbit the star with similar periods. Such a pair of candidates could be discarded as false positives because they are not Hill-stable. However, horseshoe or long-libration-period tadpole co-orbital configurations can explain such period similarity. This degeneracy can be solved by considering the transit timing variations (TTVs) of each planet. We subsequently focus on the three-planet-candidate system TOI-178: the two outer candidates of that system have similar orbital periods and were found to have an angular separation close to π∕3 during the TESS observation of sector 2. Based on the announced orbits, the long-term stability of the system requires the two close-period planets to be co-orbital. Our independent detrending and transit search recover and slightly favour the three orbits close to a 3:2:2 resonant chain found by the TESS pipeline, although we cannot exclude an alias that would put the system close to a 4:3:2 configuration. We then analyse the co-orbital scenario in more detail, and show that despite the influence of an inner planet just outside the 2:3 MMR, this potential co-orbital system could be stable on a gigayear time-scale for a variety of planetary masses, either on a trojan or a horseshoe orbit. We predict that large TTVs should arise in such a configuration with a period of several hundred days. We then show how the mass of each planet can be retrieved from these TTVs.

Short-period planets suffer from extreme tidal forces from their parent stars causing them to deform and attain non-spherical shapes. The planet shapes, modeled here as triaxial ellipsoids, can have an impact on the observed transit light curves and the planetary parameters derived. We investigate the detectability of tidal deformation in short-period planets from their transit light curves and the instrumental precision needed. We show how the detection of deformation from the light curve allows us to obtain an observational estimate of the second fluid Love number which gives valuable insight about the planet's internal structure. We adopted a model to calculate the shape of a planet due to the external potentials acting on it and used this model to modify the ellc transit tool. Our model is parameterized by the Love number, hence for a given light curve we can derive the value of the Love number that best matches the observations. We simulated the known cases of WASP-103b and WASP-121b expected to be highly deformed. Our analyses showed that instrumental precision $\leq$50ppm/min is needed to reliably estimate the Love number and detect tidal deformation. This precision can be achieved for WASP-103b in ~40 transits using HST and in ~300 transits using the forthcoming CHEOPS. However, fewer transits will be required for short-period planets that may be found around bright stars in the TESS and PLATO survey missions. The unprecedented precisions expected from PLATO and JWST can permit the detection of deformation with a single transit. However, the effects of instrumental and astrophysical noise must be well-considered as they can increase the number of transits required to reach the 50 ppm/min detection limit. Most Neptune-mass planets in close-in orbits (orbital periods less than a few days) present nonzero eccentricity, typically around 0.15. This is somehow unexpected, as these planets undergo strong tidal dissipation that should circularize their orbits in a time-scale shorter than the age of the system. In this paper we discuss some mechanisms that can oppose to bodily tides, namely, thermal atmospheric tides, evaporation of the atmosphere, and excitation from a distant companion. In the first two cases, the eccentricity can increase consistently, while in the last one, the eccentricity can only be excited for a limited amount of time (that may nevertheless exceed the age of the system). We show the limitations of these different mechanisms and how some of them could, depending on specific properties of the observed planetary systems, account for their presently observed eccentricities., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the effect of deformation inertia on tide dynamics, particularly within the context of the tide response equations proposed independently by Boué et al. (Celest Mech Dyn Astron 126:31–60, 2016) and Ragazzo and Ruiz (Celest Mech Dyn Astron 128(1):19–59, 2017). The singular limit as the inertia tends to zero is analyzed, and equations for the small inertia regime are proposed. The analysis of Love numbers shows that, independently of the rheology, deformation inertia can be neglected if the tide-forcing frequency is much smaller than the frequency of small oscillations of an ideal body made of a perfect (inviscid) fluid with the same inertial and gravitational properties of the original body. Finally, numerical integration of the full set of equations, which couples tide, spin and orbit, is used to evaluate the effect of inertia on the overall motion. The results are consistent with those obtained from the Love number analysis. The conclusion is that, from the point of view of orbital evolution of celestial bodies, deformation inertia can be safely neglected. Stellar systems consisting of multiple stars tend to undergo tidal interactions when the separations between the stars are short. While tidal phenomena have been extensively studied, a certain tidal effect exclusive to hierarchical triples (triples in which one component star has a much wider orbit than the others) has hardly received any attention, mainly due to its complexity and consequent resistance to being modelled. This tidal effect is the tidal perturbation of the tertiary by the inner binary, which in turn depletes orbital energy from the inner binary, causing the inner binary separation to shrink. In this paper, we develop a fully numerical simulation of these "tertiary tides" by modifying established tidal models. We also provide general insight as to how close a hierarchical triple needs to be in order for such an effect to take place, and demonstrate that our simulations can effectively retrieve the orbital evolution for such systems. We conclude that tertiary tides are a significant factor in the evolution of close hierarchical triples, and strongly influence at least ~ 1% of all multiple star systems., 13 pages, 5 figures for this version

We investigate the dynamics of the (47171) Lempo triple system, also known by 1999TC$_{36}$. We derive a full 3D $N$-body model that takes into account the orbital and spin evolution of all bodies, which are assumed triaxial ellipsoids. We show that, for reasonable values of the shapes and rotational periods, the present best fitted orbital solution for the Lempo system is chaotic and unstable in short time-scales. The formation mechanism of this system is unknown, but the orbits can be stabilised when tidal dissipation is taken into account. The dynamics of the Lempo system is very rich, but depends on many parameters that are presently unknown. A better understanding of this systems thus requires more observations, which also need to be fitted with a complete model like the one presented here., Comment: 45 pages, 9 figures

We study the phase space of eccentric coplanar co-orbitals in the non-restricted case. Departing from the quasi-circular case, we describe the evolution of the phase space as the eccentricities increase. We find that over a given value of the eccentricity, around 0.5 for equal mass co-orbitals, important topological changes occur in the phase space. These changes lead to the emergence of new co-orbital configurations and open a continuous path between the previously distinct trojan domains near the $$L_4$$ and $$L_5$$ eccentric Lagrangian equilibria. These topological changes are shown to be linked with the reconnection of families of quasi-periodic orbits of non-maximal dimension.

Co-orbital bodies are the byproduct of planet formation and evolution, as we know from the Solar System. Although planet-size co-orbitals do not exists in our planetary system, dynamical studies show that they can remain stable for long periods of time in the gravitational well of massive planets. Should they exist, their detection is feasible with the current instrumentation. Many triple-star systems have an inner pair with an orbital period of a few days only. A common mechanism to explain the short-period pile-up present in the observations is the migration through Lidov-Kozai cycles combined with tidal friction. Here, we revisit this mechanism and aim to determine the initial orbital configurations leading to this process. We show that the mutual inclination of the triple-star system is not the only critical parameter, since the eccentricity as well as the argument of the pericenter of the inner orbit also play an important role in the establishment of the Lidov-Kozai migration. Our framework is the secular hierarchical three-body problem (octupole order approximation) with general relativity corrections, including the effects of tides, stellar oblateness and magnetic spin-down braking. Both the orbital and the spin evolutions are considered. Extensive numerical simulations with uniform and non-uniform distributions of the initial orbital parameters are carried out, and unbiased initial conditions leading to Lidov-Kozai migration are revealed. Finally, we highlight the importance of the initial "Kozai constant" $h=\sqrt{(1-e^2)}\cos{i}$ in the dynamical evolution of triple-star systems, by showing that phase portraits at given $h$-values unveil different evolution paths., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

International audience; In some planetary systems, the orbital periods of two of its members present a commensurability, usually known by mean-motion resonance. These resonances greatly enhance the mutual gravitational influence of the planets. As a consequence, these systems present uncommon behaviors, and their motions need to be studied with specific methods. Some features are unique and allow us a better understanding and characterization of these systems. Moreover, mean-motion resonances are a result of an early migration of the orbits in an accretion disk, so it is possible to derive constraints on their formation. Here we review the dynamics of a pair of resonant planets and explain how their orbits evolve in time. We apply our results to the HD 45365 planetary system.

Co-orbital planets have not yet been discovered, although they constitute a frequent by-product of planetary formation and evolution models. This lack may be due to observational biases, since the main detection methods are unable to spot co-orbital companions when they are small or near the Lagrangian equilibrium points. However, for a system with one known transiting planet (with mass m1), we can detect a co-orbital companion (with mass m2) by combining the time of mid-transit with the radial-velocity data of the star. Here, we propose a simple method that allows the detection of co-orbital companions, valid for eccentric orbits, that relies on a single parameter α, which is proportional to the mass ratio m2/m1. Therefore, when α is statistically different from zero, we have a strong candidate to harbour a co-orbital companion. We also discuss the relevance of false positives generated by different planetary configurations.

We study the spin evolution of close-in planets in compact multi-planetary systems. The rotation period of these planets is often assumed to be synchronous with the orbital period due to tidal dissipation. Here we show that planet-planet perturbations can drive the spin of these planets into non-synchronous or even chaotic states. In particular, we show that the transit timing variation (TTV) is a very good probe to study the spin dynamics, since both are dominated by the perturbations of the mean longitude of the planet. We apply our model to KOI-227 b and Kepler-88 b, which are both observed undergoing strong TTVs. We also perform numerical simulations of the spin evolution of these two planets. We show that for KOI-227 b non-synchronous rotation is possible, while for Kepler-88 b the rotation can be chaotic.

The stability of planets in the alpha-Centauri AB stellar system has been studied extensively. However, most studies either focus on the orbital plane of the binary or consider inclined circular orbits. Here, we numerically investigate the stability of a possible planet in the alpha-Centauri AB binary system for S-type orbits in an arbitrary spatial configuration. In particular, we focus on inclined orbits and explore the stability for different eccentricities and orientation angles. We show that large stable and regular regions are present for very eccentric and inclined orbits, corresponding to libration in the Lidov-Kozai resonance. We additionally show that these extreme orbits can survive over the age of the system, despite the effect of tides. In this paper, we present a formalism designed to model tidal interaction with a viscoelastic body made of Maxwell material. Our approach remains regular for any spin rate and orientation, and for any orbital configuration including high eccentricities and close encounters. The method is to integrate simultaneously the rotation and the position of the planet as well as its deformation. We provide the equations of motion both in the body frame and in the inertial frame. With this study, we generalize preexisting models to the spatial case and to arbitrary multipole orders using a formalism taken from quantum theory. We also provide the vectorial expression of the secular tidal torque expanded in Fourier series. Applying this model to close-in exoplanets, we observe that if the relaxation time is longer than the revolution period, the phase space of the system is characterized by the presence of several spin-orbit resonances, even in the circular case. As the system evolves, the planet spin can visit different spin-orbit configurations. The obliquity is decreasing along most of these resonances, but we observe a case where the planet tilt is instead growing. These conclusions derived from the secular torque are successfully tested with numerical integrations of the instantaneous equations of motion on HD 80606b. With about 2000 extrasolar planets confirmed, the results show that planetary systems have a whole range of unexpected properties. We present a full investigation of the HD219828 system, a bright metal-rich star for which a hot neptune has previously been detected. We used a set of HARPS, SOPHIE, and ELODIE radial velocities to search for the existence of orbiting companions to HD219828. A dynamical analysis is also performed to study the stability of the system and to constrain the orbital parameters and planet masses. We announce the discovery of a long period (P=13.1years) massive (msini=15.1MJup) companion (HD219828c) in a very eccentric orbit (e=0.81). The same data confirms the existence of a hot-neptune, HD219828b, with a minimum mass of 21 MEarth and a period of 3.83days. The dynamical analysis shows that the system is stable. The HD219828 system is extreme and unique in several aspects. First, among all known exoplanet systems it presents an unusually high mass ratio. We also show that systems like HD219828, with a hot neptune and a long-period massive companion are more frequent than similar systems with a hot jupiter instead. This suggests that the formation of hot neptunes follows a different path than the formation of their hot jovian counterparts. The high mass, long period, and eccentricity of HD219828c also make it a good target for Gaia astrometry as well as a potential target for atmospheric characterisation, using direct imaging or high-resolution spectroscopy. Astrometric observations will allow us to derive its real mass and orbital configuration. If a transit of HD219828b is detected, we will be able to fully characterise the system, including the relative orbital inclinations. Aims: Several studies suggest that the activity level of a planet-host star can be influenced by the presence of a close-by orbiting planet. Moreover, the interaction mechanisms that have been proposed, magnetic interaction and tidal interaction, exhibit a very different dependence on orbital separation between the star and the planet. A detection of activity enhancement and characterization of its dependence on planetary orbital distance can, in principle, allow us to characterize the physical mechanism behind the activity enhancement. Methods: We used the HARPS-N spectrograph to measure the stellar activity level of HD 80606 during the planetary periastron passage and compared the activity measured to that close to apastron. Being characterized by an eccentricity of 0.93 and an orbital period of 111 days, the system's extreme variation in orbital separation makes it a perfect target to test our hypothesis. Results: We find no evidence for a variation in the activity level of the star as a function of planetary orbital distance, as measured by all activity indicators employed log($R'_{HK}$), H$_\alpha$, NaI, and HeI. None of the models employed, whether magnetic interaction or tidal interaction, provides a good description of the data. Conclusions: We find no evidence for star-planet interaction in HD\,80606 at the moment of the periastron passage of its very eccentric planet. The straightforward explanation for the non-detection is the absence of interaction as a result of a low magnetic field strength on either the planet or the star and of the low level of tidal interaction between the two. However, we cannot exclude two scenarios: i) the interaction can be instantaneous and of magnetic origin, being concentrated on the substellar point and its surrounding area, and ii) the interaction can lead to a delayed activity enhancement. International audience; We investigate the resonant rotation of co-orbital bodies in eccentric and planar orbits. We develop a simple analytical model to study the impact of the eccentricity and orbital perturbations on the spin dynamics. This model is relevant in the entire domain of horseshoe and tadpole orbit, for moderate eccentricities. We show that there are three different families of spin–orbit resonances, one depending on the eccentricity, one depending on the orbital libration frequency, and another depending on the pericenter’s dynamics. We can estimate the width and the location of the different resonant islands in the phase space, predicting which are the more likely to capture the spin of the rotating body. In some regions of the phase space the resonant islands may overlap, giving rise to chaotic rotation.

We present new radial velocity measurements of eight stars secured with the spectrograph SOPHIE at the 193-cm telescope of the Haute-Provence Observatory allowing the detection and characterization of new giant extrasolar planets. The host stars are dwarfs of spectral types between F5 and K0 and magnitudes between 6.7 and 9.6; the planets have minimum masses M_p sin i between 0.4 to 3.8 M_Jup and orbital periods of several days to several months. The data allow only single planets to be discovered around the first six stars (HD143105, HIP109600, HD35759, HIP109384, HD220842, and HD12484), but one of them shows the signature of an additional substellar companion in the system. The seventh star, HIP65407, allows the discovery of two giant planets, just outside the 12:5 resonance in weak mutual interaction. The last star, HD141399, was already known to host a four-planetary system; our additional data and analyses allow new constraints to be put on it. We present Keplerian orbits of all systems, together with dynamical analyses of the two multi-planetary systems. HD143105 is one of the brightest stars known to host a hot Jupiter, which could allow numerous follow-up studies to be conducted despite this is not a transiting system. Cassini states correspond to the equilibria of the spin axis of a body when its orbit is perturbed. They were initially described for planetary satellites, but the spin axes of black hole binaries also present this kind of equilibria. In previous works, Cassini states were reported as spin-orbit resonances, but actually the spin of black hole binaries is in circulation and there is no resonant motion. Here we provide a general description of the spin dynamics of black hole binary systems based on a Hamiltonian formalism. In absence of dissipation the problem is integrable and it is easy to identify all possible trajectories for the spin for a given value of the total angular momentum. As the system collapses due to radiation reaction, the Cassini states are shifted to different positions, which modifies the dynamics around them. This is why the final spin distribution may differ from the initial one. Our method provides a simple way of predicting the distribution of the spin of black hole binaries at the end of the inspiral phase., 5 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the secular dynamics of three-body circumbinary systems under the effect of tides. We use the octupolar non-restricted approximation for the orbital interactions, general relativity corrections, the quadrupolar approximation for the spins, and the viscous linear model for tides. We derive the averaged equations of motion in a simplified vectorial formalism, which is suitable to model the long-term evolution of a wide variety of circumbinary systems in very eccentric and inclined orbits. In particular, this vectorial approach can be used to derive constraints for tidal migration, capture in Cassini states, and stellar spin-orbit misalignment. We show that circumbinary planets with initial arbitrary orbital inclination can become coplanar through a secular resonance between the precession of the orbit and the precession of the spin of one of the stars. We also show that circumbinary systems for which the pericenter of the inner orbit is initially in libration present chaotic motion for the spins and for the eccentricity of the outer orbit. Because our model is valid for the non-restricted problem, it can also be applied to any three-body hierarchical system such as star-planet-satellite systems and triple stellar systems., Comment: 40 pages, 18 figures

Extrasolar planets abound in almost any possible configuration. However, until five years ago, there was a lack of planets orbiting closer than 0.5 au to giant or subgiant stars. Since then, recent detections have started to populated this regime by confirming 13 planetary systems. We discuss the properties of these systems in terms of their formation and evolution off the main sequence. Interestingly, we find that $70.0\pm6.6$ % of the planets in this regime are inner components of multiplanetary systems. This value is 4.2$��$ higher than for main-sequence hosts, which we find to be $42.4\pm0.1$ %. The properties of the known planets seem to indicate that the closest-in planets (a < 0.06 au) to main-sequence stars are massive (i.e., hot Jupiters) and isolated and that they are subsequently engulfed by their host as it evolves to the red giant branch, leaving only the predominant population of multiplanetary systems in orbits 0.06 < a < 0.5 au. We model the secular evolution of a star’s orbit when it has a nearby binary system . We assume a hierarchical triple system where the inter-binary distance is small in comparison with the distance to the star. We show that the major secular effect is precession of the star’s orbit around the binary system’s centre of mass. We explain how we can obtain this precession rate from the star’s radial velocity data, and thus infer the binary system’s parameters. We show that the secular effect of a nearby binary system on the star’s radial velocity can sometimes mimic a planet. We analyse the radial velocity data for ν-Octantis A which has a nearby companion (ν-Octantis B) and we obtain retrograde precession of −086 ± 002 yr−1. We show that if ν-Octantis B was itself a double star, it could mimic a signal with similarities to that previously identified as a planet of ν-Octantis A. Nevertheless, we need more observations in order to decide in favour of the double-star hypothesis.

Hot-Jupiters are a common sub-class of exoplanets, which are enough close to the star to undergo tidal dissipation. The continuous action of tides modify the rotation of the planets until an equilibrium situation is reached. It is often assumed that synchronous motion is the most probable outcome of tidal evolution, since synchronous rotation is observed for the majority of the satellites in the Solar System. This is true for circular orbits, but when the orbits are eccentric, tidal effects are stronger when the planets are closer to the star, and therefore, the rotation rate tends to equalize the orbital speed rate at the pericenter (which is faster than synchronous rotation). An additional complication arises if the eccentricity is not constant and undergoes periodic perturbations from an external companion. Here we obtain an expression for the equilibrium rotation of Hot-Jupiters undergoing tidal dissipation and planetary perturbations. We show that for these planets, the equilibrium rotation rate is faster than for non-perturbed eccentric orbits.

The present obliquity of Mercury is very low (less than 0.1°), which led previous studies to always adopt a nearly zero obliquity during the planet’s past evolution. However, the initial orientation of Mercury’s rotation axis is unknown and probably much different than today. As a consequence, we believe that the obliquity could have been significant when the rotation rate of the planet first encountered spin-orbit resonances. In order to compute the capture probabilities in resonance for any evolutionary scenario, we present in full detail the dynamical equations governing the long-term evolution of the spin, including the obliquity contribution. The secular spin evolution of Mercury results from tidal interactions with the Sun, but also from viscous friction at the core–mantle boundary. Here, this effect is also regarded with particular attention. Previous studies show that a liquid core enhances drastically the chances of capture in spin-orbit resonances. We confirm these results for null obliquity, but we find that the capture probability generally decreases as the obliquity increases. We finally show that, when core–mantle friction is combined with obliquity evolution, the spin can evolve into some unexpected configurations as the synchronous or the 1/2 spin-orbit resonance.
