Abstract: The global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus began in early 2020 and is still present. The respiratory symptoms caused by COVID-19 are well established. However, neurological manifestations that may result from direct or indirect neurological damage after SARS-CoV-2 infection have been reported frequently. The main proposed pathophysiological processes leading to neurological damage in COVID-19 are cerebrovascular disease and indirect inflammatory/ autoimmune origin mechanisms. A growing number of studies confirm that neuroprotective measures should be maintained in COVID-19 patients. On the other hand, cannabinoids have been the subject of various studies that propose them as potentially promising drugs in chronic neurodegenerative diseases due to their powerful neuroprotective potential. In this review, we addresses the possible mechanism of action of cannabinoids as a neuroprotective treatment in patients infected by SARS-CoV-2. The endocannabinoid system is found in multiple systems within the body, including the immune system. Its activation can lead to beneficial results, such as a decrease in viral entry, a reduction of viral replication, and a reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-12, TNF-α, or IFN-c through CB2R expression induced during inflammation by SARS-CoV-2 infection in the central nervous system.

Background:Emotional disorders are common comorbid affectations that exacerbate the severity and persistence of chronic pain. Specifically, depressive symptoms can lead to an excessive duration and intensity of pain. Clinical and preclinical studies have been focused on the underlying mechanisms of chronic pain and depression comorbidity and the use of antidepressants to reduce pain.Aim:This review provides an overview of the comorbid relationship of chronic pain and depression, the clinical and pre-clinical studies performed on the neurobiological aspects of pain and depression, and the use of antidepressants as analgesics.Method:A systematic search of literature databases was conducted according to pre-defined criteria. The authors independently conducted a focused analysis of the full-text articles.Results:Studies suggest that pain and depression are highly intertwined and may co-exacerbate physical and psychological symptoms. One important biochemical basis for pain and depression focuses on the serotonergic and norepinephrine system, which have been shown to play an important role in this comorbidity. Brain structures that codify pain are also involved in mood. It is evident that using serotonergic and norepinephrine antidepressants are strategies commonly employed to mitigate painConclusion:Literature indicates that pain and depression impact each other and play a prominent role in the development and maintenance of other chronic symptoms. Antidepressants continue to be a major therapeutic tool for managing chronic pain. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are more effective in reducing pain than Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Serotonin- Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs).

Background: Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is widely employed for cosmetic purposes and in the treatment of certain diseases such as strabismus, hemifacial spasm and focal dystonia among others. BoNT-A effect mainly acts at the muscular level by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine at presynaptic levels consequently blocking the action potential in the neuromuscular junction. Despite the great progress in approval and pharmaceutical usage, improvement in displacing BoNT-A to other pathologies has remained very limited. Patients under diagnosis of several types of cancer experience pain in a myriad of ways; it can be experienced as hyperalgesia or allodynia, and the severity of the pain depends, to some degree, on the place where the tumor is located. Pain relief in patients diagnosed with cancer is not always optimal, and as the disease progresses, transition to more aggressive drugs, like opioids is sometimes unavoidable. In recent years BoNT-A employment in cancer has been explored, as well as an antinociceptive drug; experiments in neuropathic, inflammatory and acute pain have been carried out in animal models and humans. Although its mechanism has not been fully known, evidence has shown that BoNT-A inhibits the secretion of pain mediators (substance P, Glutamate, and calcitonin gene related protein) from the nerve endings and dorsal root ganglion, impacting directly on the nociceptive transmission through the anterolateral and trigeminothalamic systems. Aim: The study aimed to collect available literature regarding molecular, physiological and neurobiological evidence of BoNT-A in cancer patients suffering from acute, neuropathic and inflammatory pain in order to identify possible mechanisms of action in which the BoNT-A could impact positively in pain treatment. Conclusion: BoNT-A could be an important neo-adjuvant and coadjuvant in the treatment of several types of cancer, to diminish pro-tumor activity and secondary pain.

Resumen Introduccion La enfermedad pulmonar intersticial (EPI) es una complicacion comun de la esclerosis sistemica (ES). El empleo de la tomografia computarizada de alta resolucion (TACAR) se ve muy limitado, y el ultrasonido pulmonar (USP) puede ser un instrumento alternativo para la evaluacion de la EPI. Objetivo Determinar la validez del USP en la deteccion temprana de la EPI en pacientes con ES. Metodos Se incluyeron 68 pacientes con ES ≥ 18 anos sin sintomas respiratorios. Un reumatologo valoro el estado respiratorio subclinico, otro reumatologo, cegado a la evaluacion clinica realizo el USP. Para determinar la validez concurrente se realizo una TACAR. Resultados Un 41,2% de pacientes mostro EPI por USP, a diferencia de los controles sanos (4,8%) (p = 0,0001). Las variables asociadas con los hallazgos de EPI al USP fueron anticuerpos anti-centromero (p = 0,005) y la puntuacion de piel RSS (p = 0,004). Se encontro una correlacion positiva entre los hallazgos de EPI por USP y TACAR (p = 0,001). La sensibilidad fue del 91,2% y la especificidad de 88,6%. Una buena confiabilidad entre observadores de los hallazgos por USP fue observada (k = 0,72). Conclusiones Al ser una herramienta alternativa valida, confiable y factible, consideramos que el USP puede ser implementado para la deteccion temprana de EPI en ES.

The brain can be directly affected by cellular damage due to viral invasion, which can lead to an inflammatory response, by the decrease in the enzymatic activity of ACE2 that regulates neuroprotective, neuro-immunomodulatory and neutralizing functions of oxidative stress. Another severe damage is hypoxemia in patients that do not receive adequate respiratory support. The neurological symptoms that the patient presents, will depend on factors that condition the expression of ACE2 in the brain such as age and sex, as well as the mechanism of neuronal invasion, the immune response and the general state of the patient. Background: The management of pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a complex subject due to the autoimmune nature of the pathology. Studies have shown that chemical mediators play a fundamental role in the determination, susceptibility and modulation of pain at different levels of the central and peripheral nervous system, resulting in interesting novel molecular targets to mitigate pain in patients with RA. However, due to the complexity of pain physiology in RA cand the many chemical mediators, the results of several studies are controversial. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the chemical mediators that are able to modulate pain in RA. Method: In this review, a search was conducted on PubMed, ProQuest, EBSCO, and the Science Citation index for studies that evaluated the expression of chemical mediators on the modulation of pain in RA. Results: Few studies have highlighted the importance of the expression of some chemical mediators that modulate pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The expression of TRPV1, ASIC-3, and TDV8 encode ionic channels in RA and modulates pain, likewise, the transcription factors in RA, such as TNFα, TGF-β1, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-γ, IL-1b, mTOR, p21, caspase 3, EDNRB, CGRPCALCB, CGRP-CALCA, and TAC1 are also directly involved in pain perception. Conclusion: The expression of all chemical mediators is directly related to RA and the modulation of pain by a complex intra and extracellular signaling pathway, however, transcription factors are involved in modulating acute pain, while the ionic channels are involved in chronic pain in RA.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease with unknown etiology and a global incidence around 1%, a positive family history increases the risk of RA roughly three to five times. Pain is one of the first symptoms to appear in this disease. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) belong to the class of small non-coding RNAs; they regulate multiple cellular processes including embryonic development, cellular proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis among others. A great deal of evidence points to the employment of miRNAs as therapeutic targets and biomarkers for several pathologies. The main objective of this Review is to assess how miRNAs participate in the pathogenesis of RA. Two advanced searches were conducted in databases, one using "micro-RNA" and "rheumatoid arthritis" as key words, and another one with "micro-RNA", "pain" and "nociception". In this Review, we describe how six miRNAs: miR-16-5p, miR-23b-3b, miR-124-3p, miR-146a-5p, miR-155-5p and miR-223-3p, involved in the modulation and transmission of the nociceptive input are unregulated in RA patients. Key molecular pathways involved in nociception, inflammation and autoimmune responses, are regulated by these miRNAs; the NF-κB, TNF-α, interleukins and TLR4. By means of gene repression, the miRNAs here described modulate the nociceptive process as well as the autoimmune response that characterize this disease.

The ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 has caused more than 6.7 million tragic deaths, plus, a large percentage of people who survived it present a myriad of chronic symptoms that last for at least 6 months; this has been named as long COVID. Some of the most prevalent are painful symptoms like headache, joint pain, migraine, neuropathic-like pain, fatigue and myalgia. MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that regulate genes, and their involvement in several pathologies has been extensively shown. A deregulation of miRNAs has been observed in patients with COVID-19. The objective of the present systematic review was to show the prevalence of chronic pain-like symptoms of patients with long COVID and based on the expression of miRNAs in patients with COVID-19, and to present a proposal on how they may be involved in the pathogenic mechanisms of chronic pain-like symptoms. A systematic review was carried out in online databases for original articles published between March 2020 to April 2022; the systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines, and it was registered in PROSPERO with registration number CRD42022318992. A total of 22 articles were included for the evaluation of miRNAs and 20 regarding long COVID; the overall prevalence of pain-like symptoms was around 10 to 87%, plus, the miRNAs that were commonly up and downregulated were miR-21-5p, miR-29a,b,c-3p miR-92a,b-3p, miR-92b-5p, miR-126-3p, miR-150-5p, miR-155-5p, miR-200a, c-3p, miR-320a,b,c,d,e-3p, and miR-451a. The molecular pathways that we hypothesized to be modulated by these miRNAs are the IL-6/STAT3 proinflammatory axis and the compromise of the blood–nerve barrier; these two mechanisms could be associated with the prevalence of fatigue and chronic pain in the long COVID population, plus they could be novel pharmacological targets in order to reduce and prevent these symptoms.

Aim The purpose of this work was to identify and measure catecholamines, their metabolites, and the gene expression of catecholamine receptors in osteosarcoma tissue. Materials and methods The levels of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, norepinephrine, serotonin, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in cancer tissue and in adjacent and non-oncological bone tissue were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography, and the gene expression of catecholamine receptors and of dopamine β-hydroxylase, monoaminoxidase, ki67, and Runx2 in the osteosarcoma tissue, tissue adjacent to the tumour, non-oncological bone, and human brain tissue was analysed by RT-PCR. Results We found significantly higher levels of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and norepinephrine in the cancer sample than in adjacent and non-oncological bone. We found that β-adrenergic receptors and dopaminergic receptors, dopamine β-hydroxylase, ki67, Runx2, and serotonergic receptor gene expression were significantly higher in tumour tissue than in adjacent and non-oncological bone. Conclusion Catecholamines and their receptors could be potential molecular markers for osteosarcoma progression.

The aging process is characterized by a gradual impairment generally caused by oxidative stress and, more specifically, sleep deprivation, which induces oxidative stress in the brain. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of three types of paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD): 96 h of PSD (96PSD group); 192 h of PSD (192PSD group); 192 h of PSD followed by a recovery period of 20 days (192PSD + Recovery group) on an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), lipid peroxidation (LPO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in the liver and pancreas of young (3-month-old) and adult (14-month-old) rats. The 96PSD and 192PSD groups of young rats showed lower glucose levels on the OGTT than the control group. In the adult rats, only the 96PSD group had lower glucose levels than the control group. However, the areas under the curve for the young and adult 192 and 192PSD + Recovery groups showed significant differences. Both LPO and SOD increased in the 192PSD and 192PSD + Recovery groups, but CAT decreased in the liver of young rats in the 192PSD group. Regarding the pancreas, LPO and SOD levels increased after 96 h of PSD. In adult animals, CAT decreased in the liver after 96 and 192 h of PSD, while LPO and SOD increased in the pancreas of the 192PSD and PSD + Recovery groups. Differences in the SOD and CAT activities in the liver and SOD activities in the pancreas were also observed between the young and adult rats and maintained across all the PSD groups. In conclusion, PSD induced differential responses that appeared to depend on the duration of the induced condition, the animals’ age, and the tissue analyzed. Levetiracetam (LEV) is a novel anticonvulsant with proven antinociceptive properties. However, the antinociceptive and pronociceptive effect of this drug has not yet been fully elucidated in a tonic pain model.Thirty-six male rats (Wistar) were randomized into six groups and underwent the formalin test as follows: rats in the control group were administered 50μL of 1% formalin in the paw; sham-group rats were administered 50μL of saline in the paw to mimick the application of formalin; the four experimental groups were administered LEV intragastrically (ig) (50, 100, 200 and 300mg/kg), and 40min later 50μL of 1% formalin was injected in the paw.LEV exhibited antinociceptive effect in the 300mg/kg LEV group (p0.05) and a pronociceptive effect in the 100mg/kg LEV group (p0.05) and in the 50mg/kg LEV group (p0.001).The antinociceptive and pronociceptive effect of LEV in a tonic pain model is dose-dependent.

Background The aim of this review was to identify the mechanisms by which serotonin receptors involved at the central level are able to modulate the nociceptive response. Pain is a defense mechanism of the body that entails physiological, anatomical, neurochemical, and psychological changes, and is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience with potential risk of tissue damage, comprising the leading cause of appointments with Physicians worldwide. Treatment for this symptom has generated several neuropharmacological lines of research, due to the different types of pain and the various drugs employed to treat this condition. Serotonin [5- HydroxyTryptamine (5-HT)] is a neurotransmitter with seven families (5-HT1-5-HT7) and approximately 15 receptor subtypes. Serotonin modulates neuronal activity; however, this neurotransmitter is related with a number of physiological processes, such as cardiovascular function, gastric motility, renal function, etc. On the other hand, several researches reported that serotonin modulates nociceptive response through 5-HT1, 5-HT2, 5-HT3, and 5-HT7 receptors in the Central Nervous System (CNS). Method In this review, a search was conducted on PubMed, ProQuest, EBSCO, and the Science Citation Index for studies evaluating the effects of 5-HT1, 5-HT2, 5-HT3, and 5-HT7 receptors in the CNS on the modulation of different types of pain. Conclusion We concluded that 5-HT1, 5-HT2, 5-HT3, and 5-HT7 receptors in the CNS modulate the pain, but this depends on the distribution of the receptors, dose of agonists or antagonists, administration route, pain type and duration in order to inhibit, excite, or even maintain the nociceptive response.

Background In tumor cells, aberrant differentiation programs have been described. Several neuronal proteins have been found associated with morphological neuronal-glial changes in breast cancer (BCa). These neuronal proteins have been related to mechanisms that are involved in carcinogenesis; however, this regulation is not well understood. Microtubule-associated protein-tau (MAP-Tau) has been describing in BCa but not its variants. This finding could partly explain the neuronal-glial morphology of BCa cells. Our aim was to determine mRNA expression of MAP-tau variants 2, 4 and 6 in breast cancer cell lines. Materials and methods Cultured cell lines MCF-10A, MDA-MB-231, SKBR3 and T47D were observed under phase-contrast microscopy for neural morphology and analyzed for gene expression of MAP-Tau transcript variants 2, 4 and 6 by real-time PCR. Results Regarding morphology like neural/glial cells, T47D line shown more cells with these features than MDA-MB-231 and SKBR. In another hand, we found much greater mRNA expression of MAP-Tau transcript variants 2, and to a lesser extent 4 and 6, in T47D cells than the other lines. In conclusion, regulation of MAP- Tau could bring about changes in cytoskeleton, cell morphology and motility; these findings cast further light on neuronal transdifferentiation in BCa.

Introduction Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a common comorbidity present in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Employment of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is very limited and lung ultrasound (LUS) can be an alternative tool for the early evaluation of ILD. Objective To determine the validity of LUS in the early detection of ILD in patients with SSc. Materials and Methods Sixty-eight patients with SSc ≥18 years without respiratory symptoms were included. A rheumatologist rated the subclinical respiratory condition, another rheumatologist blinded to the clinical assessment performed the LUS. To determine validity HRCT was performed as well. Results Prevalence of LID in SSc patients was 41.2% in contrast to the 4.8% healthy controls (P = .0001). Variables associated with LUS and HRCT findings were anti-centromere antibodies (P = .005) and the Rodnan skin score (P = .004). A positive correlation was present between the findings of HRCT and LUS (P = .001). Sensitivity and specificity were 91.2% and 88.6% respectively. Good reliability in the LUS findings was found between observers (k = .72). Conclusion By proving to be a valid, trustworthy and feasible alternative tool, we consider that LUS can be implemented for the early detection of ILD in SSc.

BACKGROUND Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common malignancy in Mexican women. A set of histopathological markers has been established to guide BCa diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Nevertheless, in only a few Mexican health services, such as that of the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA for its acronym in Spanish), are these markers commonly employed for assessing BCa. The aim of this study was to explore the association of Ki67, TP53, HER2/neu, estrogenic receptors (ERs) and progesterone receptors (PRs) with BCa risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Clinical histories provided background patient information. Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis was conducted on 48 tissue samples from women diagnosed with BCa and treated with radical mastectomy. The Chi square test or Fisher exact test together with the Pearson and Spearman correlation were applied. RESULTS On average, patients were 58±10.4 years old. It was most common to find invasive ductal carcinoma (95.8%), histological grade 3 (45.8%), with a poor Nottingham Prognostic Index (NPI; 80.4%). Background Primary bone neoplasms are rare, contributing only 0.2% of the global burden of all human malignancies. Osteosarcoma (OS) and chondrosarcoma (CS) are the most common malignancies of bone. The giant cell tumor of bone (GCTb) is a benign tumor with behavior characterized by osteolytic bone destruction. The OS, CS and GCTb affect both sexes, all races and generally have incidence peaks regarding the age of the patient which vary according to the tumor type. We analyzed the incidences of OS, CS and GCTb and their relations with gender and age in patients treated in the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR, for its acronym in Spanish) over a period of nine years. Materials and methods In the study period, clinic pathological data for 384 patients were obtained with clinical, radiological and histopathological diagnosis for OS, GCTb and CS. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. Results From 2006 to 2014 were recorded 384 cases of bone malignancies in the database of INR. The GCTb had the highest incidence (53.1%), followed by OS (31.3%) and finally the CS (15.6%). The overall average age was 33.6±15.8 years and the overall frequency of gender had a ratio of 1/1.03 male/female. The states with the highest incidence were Distrito Federal and Estado de Mexico with 29.2% and 25.3% respectively. Malignant neoplasms of bone assessed in the course of nine years show three significant increases in 2008, 2011 and 2014 (p=0.14). We found association between sex and tumor type (p=0.03), GCTb and CS predominated in females (54.9% and 56.6% respectively), while for the OS males were most affected (59.1%). Age was different in relation with tumor type (p=0.0001), average age was 24.3±11.2 years for OS, 34.5±13 years for GCTb and 49.2±18.5 years for CS. Furthermore, associations of tumor type with topographic location of the primary tumor (P=0.0001) were found. Conclusions In this study we can see that incidence of musculoskeletal tumor in our population is continuously increasing and in nine years an approximately 200% increase of musculoskeletal tumor cases was observed.

This study assessed apoptosis in the offspring of rats exposed to oxcarbazepine (OXC) from day 7 to 15 of gestation. Three groups of pregnant Wistar rats were used: 1) Control, treated with saline solution; 2) treated with 100 mg/kg OXC; 3) treated with 100 mg/kg of carbamazepine (CBZ, as a positive control for apoptosis); the route of administration was intragastric. Apoptosis was detected at three postnatal ages using the TUNEL technique in the CA1, and CA3 regions of the hippocampus and in the dentate gyrus (DG); neurogenesis was assessed in the DG using an antibody against doublecortin. The litter characteristics were recorded. OXC increased apoptosis in all regions (p 0.01) at the three ages evaluated. Lamination disruption occurred in CA1 and CA3 due to the neuron absence and to ectopic neurons; there were also malformations in the dorsal lamina of the DG in 38% and 25% of the pups born from rats treated with OXC and CBZ respectively. CBZ also increased apoptosis. No clear effect on neurogenesis in the DG was observed. The size of the litter was smaller (p 0.01) in the experimental groups. Nineteen-day OXC fetuses had low weight (p 0.01), but 21 and 30 postnatal days old CBZ and OXC pups were overweight (p 0.01). The results demonstrate that OXC administered during gestation is pro-apoptotic, alters the cytoarchitecture of the hippocampus, reduces litter size, and probably influences postnatal weight. We provide evidence of the proapoptotic effect of CBZ when administered early in gestation.

The mutations in the GJB2 gene are the most common cause of nonsyndromic hearing impairment and they are associated with the population’s ethnic background. The p.Val27Ile is frequent in both Asia and America. In this retrospective study, we report the findings from the GJB2 screening and the audiological exams conducted on 125 Mexican mestizo patients with non-syndromic hearing impairment; they were treated at the Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitacion in Mexico City. The most frequent audiometric findings were bilateral, symmetrical, and profound hearing impairment. The allele frequencies in the GJB2 screening were p.Val27Ile 15%, other mutations 5%, and wild type 80%. We found no correlation between GJB2 genotype and auditory phenotype. The high allele frequency of p.Val27Ile was a very interesting finding. Our research suggests that p.Val27Ile arose in an ancient common ancestor who lived in Altai Republic and then the polymorphism was brought to America by its first inhabitants, the Amerindians. These results enhance our understanding of the peopling of the America, which remains unresolved.

This study evaluated a polylactic and polyglycolic acid (PLA/PGA) implant as a partial tracheal substitute in young developing canines. This experimental and longitudinal study included local stray pups that received substitution of a short cervical tracheal segment with a PLA 85%/PGA 15% plaque. We measured clinical, endoscopic, and tomographic variables for 1 year, at which time we performed histomorphological evaluations of the implant using light and electron microscopy. There were no adverse events throughout the clinical progression. On endoscopic evaluation, the implant was covered with mucosal tissue beginning in the first month, without granulation or stenosis, and the circular shape of the trachea was altered. Tomographic images of the tracheal area at the implant site were similar to adjacent healthy areas (p = 0.423). At the end of the follow-up period, the plaque had biodegraded, and the space was covered by pseudostratified epithelium and ciliated cells similar to the neighboring tissue. Implantation of a PLA/PGA plaque constituted an effective (functional) replacement of a short semicircular cervical tracheal segment without limiting the growth of the recipient. Additional studies are required to prove the efficacy of these implants for larger tracheal segment replacements and in subjects at different stages of development.

Resumen Introduccion y objetivos La audicion residual se considera uno de los factores pronosticos para la evolucion de pacientes con implante coclear, y su determinacion de manera objetiva a traves de potenciales evocados auditivos de estado estable (PEAee) es de suma importancia. Los objetivos en este estudio fueron cuantificar la audicion residual y evaluar la utilidad de los PEAee en su medicion en pacientes implantados. Metodos A 12 pacientes con implante coclear se les aplico audiometria tonal liminar (ATL) pre y postimplantacion, asi como PEAee postimplante. Se realizo estadistica descriptiva, correlaciones de Pearson y tablas de contingencia. Resultados Se conservo la audicion residual en el 37,5% de los pacientes para la frecuencia de 125 Hz; para 250 y 500 Hz, la conservaron el 45,45% de los pacientes; en 1.000 Hz, el 27,27%; en 2.000 Hz, el 28,85% conservo la audicion posterior al implante coclear; en 4.000 Hz, el 16%, y el 0% en el caso de 8.000 Hz. Al realizar PEAee postimplante se observa que no hay respuesta en el oido implantado, en comparacion con el oido no implantado, donde encontramos respuesta en las frecuencias de 500 y 1.000 Hz, dado que los pacientes eran portadores de hipoacusia bilateral profunda, lo que podria evidenciar destruccion parcial del tejido neural en el oido implantado. Conclusiones La audicion residual en frecuencias graves se conservo en la mayor parte de los pacientes. Los resultados en PEAee sugieren que es un estudio util para evaluar la audicion residual.

Our aim was to study the specific role of the postsynaptic D1 receptors on dopaminergic response and analyze the metabolized dopamine (DA) in the rat striatum. We used male Wistar rats to evaluate the effects of different doses of a D1 agonist (SKF-38393) and a D1 antagonist (SCH-23390), and their co-administration. The levels of DA and L-3, 4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) were measured using high performance liquid chromatography. The systemic injection of SKF-38393 alone at 1, 5 and 10 mg/kg did not alter the DA and DOPAC levels or the DOPAC/DA ratio. In contrast, injection of SCH-23390 alone at 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg significantly increased the DA and DOPAC levels, as well as the DOPAC/DA ratio, compared with the respective control groups. The co-administration of SCH-23390+SKF-38393 did not alter the DA or DOPAC levels, but it did significantly inhibit the SCH-23390-induced increase of the DA and DOPAC levels. The SCH-23390+SKF-38393 and the SCH-23390-only groups showed an increase in the DOPAC/DA ratio. The co-administration of SCH-23390+PARGYLINE significantly decreased the DOPAC levels and the DOPAC/DA ratio compared with the control and SCH-23390 groups. Taken together, our results showed that selective inhibition with SCH-23390 produced an increase in metabolized DA via striatal monoamine oxidase. These findings also contribute to the understanding of the role of postsynaptic D1 receptors in the long-loop negative feedback system in the rat striatum.

Microorganims of the bovine rumen fluid biocatalyzed the reduction of nitro-compound substrates to yield the respective amines. This enzymatic process, using ruminal contents, has rarely been reported in associa- tion with the bioreduction of nitro groups. The biotransformation reactions catalyzed by this system were de- pendent of both the electronic characteristics and the area/volume of the nitro-substrates confirming the processes are enzymatic. The semi-preparative scale biotransformation went by in good yield showing the rumen fluid may be employed in the synthesis of amines under very mild conditions and, moreover, it may have application in the bioremediation of nitro-compounds.

The sensorimotor cortex and the cerebellum are interconnected by the corticopontocerebellar (CPC) pathway and by neuronal groups such as the serotonergic system. Our aims were to determine the levels of cerebellar serotonin (5-HT) and lipid peroxidation (LP) after cortical iron injection and to analyze the motor function produced by the injury. Rats were divided into the following three groups: control, injured and recovering. Motor function was evaluated using the beam-walking test as an assessment of overall locomotor function and the footprint test as an assessment of gait. We also determined the levels of 5-HT and LP two and twenty days post-lesion. We found an increase in cerebellar 5-HT and a concomitant increase in LP in the pons and cerebellum of injured rats, which correlated with their motor deficits. Recovering rats showed normal 5-HT and LP levels. The increase of 5-HT in injured rats could be a result of serotonergic axonal injury after cortical iron injection. The LP and motor deficits could be due to impairments in neuronal connectivity affecting the corticospinal and CPC tracts and dysmetric stride could be indicative of an ataxic gait that involves the cerebellum.

Iron chloride injections into the rat SNc can cause chronic decreases in striatal dopamine (DA) levels. However, changes in striatal DA content after iron-dextran injection into rat SNc have not been completely elucidated. The aim of this work was to measure striatal DA concentrations after iron-dextran injection into the SNc. We divided 40 male Wistar rats into five groups, including control, saline injected then sacrificed 7 days or 30 days later, and iron-dextran injected then sacrificed 7 days or 30 days later. Striatal DA content was measured in control animals and in all animals sacrificed 7 days or 30 days after injection, and motor performance was assessed in iron-dextran and saline injected groups 30 days after injection. The striatal DA levels were determined using HPLC. There were significant (P < 0.05) decreases in DA concentrations in the striatum ipsilateral to the injection site in the iron-dextran treated rats compared to control and saline-injected rats. There were no significant differences in DA concentration between the sham-operated (i.e., saline-injected) and control rats. We also observed motor deficits in the iron-dextran injected rats. The striatal DA reduction observed after iron-dextran injection may be attributable to iron-induced oxidative injury in the SNc. Motor deficits, in turn, may be explained by subsequent disturbances in striatal and cortical dopaminergic neuromodulation.

RESUMEN. Se describe la vasculatura arterial carotidea-cerebral del gallo domestico ( Gallus gallus Linnaeu s ). Se utilizaron 10 gallos de 2.5 kg de peso, estirpe Rhode Island, los cuales fueron sometidosa la tecnica de conservacion replesion vascular. Se concluyo que la anastomosis intercarotidea, laformacion de la arteria basilar y la ausencia de las arterias vertebrales son los componentes massobresalientes de la vasculatura cefalica. Se propone estandarizar la nomenclatura de las diversasestructuras anatomicas y vasculares ligadas a la vasculatura arterial carotidea-cerebral ya que sonconfusas en las diversas publicaciones. The study analyzed the effect of mannitol on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of amikacin. Adult Wistar rats were treated as follows: Group 1 (G1) received mannitol for three days, Group 2 (G2) received mannitol plus 10 mg/kg of amikacin simultaneously, and Group 3 only amikacin. The PK study was conducted on the 4th day. For which, blood samples were drawn at fixed times during 24 h and immunoenzymatically analyzed. Results revealed significant differences (pO estudo analisa o efeito do manitol na farmacocinética (PK) da amicacina . Ratos adultos Wistar foram tratadas da seguinte maneira: o grupo 1 (G1) recebeu manitol durante três días. Ao grupo 2 (G2) se administrou manitol e 10 mg/kg de amicacina, ao mesmo tempo. Finalmente, o grupo 3 (G3) recebeu somente amicacina. No quarto día se realizou o estudo de PK nos três grupos. Para isso, foram retiradas amostras de sangue, em tempos pre-determinados, durante 24 horas, que foram analisadas por métodos imunoenzimáticos. Os resultados mostraram diferencas significativas (p < 0.05) entre os grupos. Po exemplo, os valores obtidos de Cmax foram 62.26 ± 15.75 µg/ml para G1, 72.63 ± 24.80 µg/ml para G2 e 68.61 ± 27.40 µg/ml para o Grupo 3. A AUC foi também diferente entre os três grupos: a maior para G2, com, 222.52 ± 47.30 µg/ml/h, e a menor para G1, com um valor de 135.59 ± 39.00 µg/ml/h. A alteraçäo dos parámetros de PK entre os grupos debe ser considerada quando se administram os dois farmacos simultaneamente. No entanto, é necessario realizar estudos em seres humanos para confirmar os nossos resultados.

Functional impairment after brain injury (BI) has been attributed to the inhibition of regions that are related to the injured site. Therefore, noradrenaline (NA) is thought to play a critical role in recovery from motor injury. However, the mechanism of this recovery process has not been completely elucidated. Moreover, the locus coeruleus (LC) projects from the pons through the rat sensorimotor cortex, and injury axotomizes LC fibers, depressing NA function. This was tested by measuring lipid peroxidation (LP) in the pons after sensorimotor cortex injury. Depression of function in the pons would be expected to alter areas receiving pontine efferents. Male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: control ( n = 16), injured ( n = 10) and recovering ( n = 16), and they were evaluated using a beam-walking assay between 2 and 20 days after cortical injury. We performed measures of NA and LP in both sides of the pons and cerebellum. We found a decrease of NA in the pons and the cerebellum, and a concomitant increase in the motor deficit and LP in the pons of injured animals. Recovering rats had NA and LP levels that were very similar to those observed in control rats. These observations suggest that the mechanism of remote inhibition after BI involves lipid peroxidation, and that the NA decrease found in the cerebellum of injured animals is mediated by a noradrenergic depression in the pons, or in areas receiving NA projections from the pons.

Ozone (O3) is widely distributed in environments with high levels of air pollution. Since cerebellar morphologic disruptions have been reported with prenatal O3 exposure, O3 may have an effect on some neurotransmitter systems, such as monoamines. In order to test this hypothesis, we used 60 male rats taken from either, mothers exposed to 1 ppm of O3 during the entire pregnancy, or from mothers breathing filtered and clean air during pregnancy. The cerebellum was extracted at 0, 5, and 10 postnatal days. Tissues were processed in order to analyze by HPLC, dopamine (DA) levels, 3,4 dihydroxyphenilacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA), norepinephrine (NA), serotonin, and 5-hydroxy-indole-acetic acid (5-HIAA) contents. Results showed a decrease of DA, NA, DOPAC and HVA mainly in 0 and 5 postnatal days. There were no changes in 5-HT levels, and 5-HIAA showed an increase after 10 postnatal days. DOPAC + HVA/DA ratio showed changes in 0 and 10 postnatal days, while 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio showed a slight decrease in 0 days. The data suggest that prenatal O3 exposure disrupts the cerebellar catecholamine system rather than the indole-amine system. Disruptions in cerebellar NA could lead to ataxic symptoms and also could limit recovery after cortical brain damage in adults. These finding are important given that recovery mechanisms observed in animals are also observed in humans.

Prenatal protein malnutrition disrupts the pattern of maturation and development of the hippocampus and its neuroanatomy and increases inhibition of the granular cell layer of the fascia dentata. If local gamma-aminobutyric acid inter-neurons are partly responsible for inhibition of the hippocampus, it is reasonable to assume that there may be an increase in the gamma-aminobutyric acid cell population of prenatal protein malnutrition rats.This experimental study was conducted to ascertain the effects of prenatal protein malnutrition on the density of GABAergic interneurons at the cornus ammonis and fascia dentata in rats.Animals were investigated under two nutritional conditions: (i) prenatal protein malnutrition group fed 6% protein, and (ii) well-nourished control group fed 25% protein. Using an antibody for gamma-aminobutyric acid, immunoreactive cells (GABAergic) were assessed in the rostral-caudal direction of the dorsal hippocampus at four levels.(i) In 30-day-old rats with prenatal malnutrition, the fascia dentata had an average of 27% more GABAergic cells than the control group; this higher amount was not detectable at 90 days. (ii) There was a significant 18% increase in GABAergic neurons at level 1 of the cornus ammonis at 90 days of age.There was an increase in the population of interneurons in the fascia dentata and cornus ammonis in prenatal protein malnutrition rats. We conclude that prenatal hypoprotein malnutrition produces changes at 30 days in the fascia dentata. Results suggest that prenatal malnutrition also produces a delay in the programmed chronology of gamma-aminobutyric acid interneurons. Finally, in cornus ammonis, at 90 days of age, prenatal protein malnutrition showed an increase only at level 1; this effect may be evidenced in the long term, despite postnatal rehabilitation.

It has been discussed that serotonin (5-HT) could be involved in the effects of sleep deprivation (SD) and/or malnutrition (M) on the sleep-wake cycle. The aim of this work was to study the effects of the M, SD and its interaction on 5-HT and 5-hydroxy-indole-acetic acid (5-HIAA) contents in the dorsal raphe (DR) and the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), two sleep-wake cycle regulators. Forty-eight puppets rats were obtained from mothers fed with low or normal casein diet. They were allocated in 3 groups (n=16 each): prenatal/postnatal casein malnutrition (6/6%), prenatal casein malnutrition/nutritional casein rehabilitation (6/25%) and prenatal/postnatal casein well-nourished state (25/25%). When rats were 60 days old, 24 animals were exposed to sleep deprivation by means of forced locomotion during 24 h. The remaining 24 were kept under normal conditions of sleep-wake cycle. The striatum is known to possess high levels of D1-like and D2-like receptors (D1Rs and D2Rs, respectively). We have previously shown that selective inhibition of D1Rs increases the dopaminergic metabolic response and proposed that this effect is associated with the concomitant activation of postsynaptic D2Rs by endogenous dopamine (DA). Here, we examined whether activation of D2Rs modulates the metabolism and synthesis of DA in the striatum. Metabolism of three different agro-pesticides widely used in Uruguay, the insecticides imidacloprid and thiamethoxam and the antiparasite nitroxinil, by bovine ruminal fluid, as supply of anaerobic microorganims, was studied. Complete ruminal fluid was incubated with each of the agrochemicals in different conditions, varying time, nutrients, and nitroethane supplementation as methanogenesis modificator. Only biotransformation was detected for nitroxinil in some of the studied variables. In the optimized condition only one product was generated and the chemical structure of this main metabolite was elucidated using combined spectroscopies evidencing a structural motive unrelated with the products of the corresponding mammal biotransformation results of reduction, and substitution processes. The ruminal generation of the metabolite was confirmed. In order to employ this anaerobic microbial system as potential bioremediator of agrochemical-contaminated soils, the toxicity, against mammal cells, and the mutagenicity, using Ames test, of the product of biotransformation were studied. The lack of toxic effects encouraged us to propose the ruminal system as a plausible system for agrochemicals bioremediation.

Different results have been reported by various authors in studies regarding the impact of the (carbamazepine) CBZ on the auditory evoked responses.To evaluate the changes in auditory pathway at different sound intensities with CBZ at doses 30 mg/kg, in latencies and interpeak-interval brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in Wistar rats.Twenty adult male Wistar rats (body weight mean, 280-300 g) were used as subjects in this study. BAEPs elicited by stimulus of (30, 50 and 70 dB nHL) intensity and BAEP were obtained with and without CBZ treatment.Peak latencies of BAEPs, between groups were different, in the group with CBZ peak latencies were delaying, but we compared interpeak-intervals between groups and we found significative differences in III-V and I-V at 70 dB nHL intensity.Our results suggest that CBZ modifies BAEPs interpeak-intervals at 70 dB, and latencies since they were delayed. Alterations in the generators of the later waves of BAEPs underlie, AED produced changes in hearing sensitivity with a single no toxic doses. Probably CBZ causes changes in endolymphatic ion composition in the rat inner ear, provoking that latency of BAEPs were delaying, but this requires further studies.

Histamine H3 receptors (H3Rs) co-localize with dopamine (DA) D1 receptors (D1Rs) on striatal medium spiny neurons and functionally antagonize D1R-mediated responses. The intra-striatal administration of D1R agonists reduces DA release whereas D1R antagonists have the opposite effect. In this work, a microdialysis method was used to study the effect of co-activating D1 and H3 receptors on the release of DA from the rat dorsal striatum. Infusion of the D1R agonist SKF-38393 (0.5 and 1 μM) significantly reduced DA release (26-58%), and this effect was prevented by co-administration of the H3R agonist immepip (10 μM). In turn, the effect of immepip was blocked by the H3R antagonist thioperamide (10 μM). Our results indicate that co-stimulation of post-synaptic D1 and H3 receptors may indirectly regulate basal DA release in the rat striatum and provide in vivo evidence for a functional interaction between D1 and H3 receptors in the basal ganglia.

Programming the cochlear implant (CI) has always been a challenge for all medical specialists in audiology, especially in pediatric patients without language secondary profound hearing loss. For this reason are searched alternatives to achieve normal hearing with the implant during programming in the shortest time possible.To analyze whether through modification threshold T we get faster audiological threshold, describe the differences in time found in patients with sensorineural hearing loss IC users with thresholds T at 10% modified, and T thresholds modified according to clinical responses after obtaining audiological threshold within normal parameters and report the speech coding strategies commonly used at the start of the program and to reach above the hearing threshold to language area.We performed an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, comparative study in which we evaluated a total of 31 patients with sensorineural hearing loss, under six years, and both sexes, of cochlear implant users of Advanced Bionics, which were divided in two groups: Group I: 15 patients with modification of thresholds T to 10%, following the manufacturer's recommendations (unmodified) and Group II: 16 patients with T threshold modification according to clinical response cochlear (modified). Were reported strategies most used speech coding in both groups at the start of the program and to reach the threshold audiological within normal parameters.In patients in group I (not modified) were 256 days on average to reach threshold audiological and group II (modified) was 335.6 days. Without statistic significant p = 0.197, with an average of 295.8 days for both groups and the speech coding strategy more used was the Hi-Res P with Fidelity 120, modifying both groups only one patient from power up obtaining threshold.It was established that thresholds T patient's subjective threshold as compared to T of 10% automatically obtained by SoundWave is not necessary since there are no statistically significant differences in relation to time to take patients implanted normal hearing threshold. The speech coding strategies more widely used and accepted by the patient was the Hi-Res P with Fidelity 120.

It has been proposed that noradrenaline is one of the neurotransmitters involved in the functional recovery. In this sense, it has been proposed that the alpha-2 noradrenergic receptors play an important role in the functional reinstatement.the aim of this work was to study the role of the alpha-2 noradrenergic receptors on the noradrenaline contents in cerebellum and pons of rats iron-injured in the motor cortex.Fifteen male Wistar rats were allocated in three groups: control (n = 5) with intracortical infusion of saline (0.9%), injured (n = 5) with intracortical infusion of dextran iron and intraventricular infusion of saline, and injured + yohimbine (alpha-2 receptor antagonist; n = 5) that received an intracortical infusion of dextran iron and also an intraventricular infusion of yohimbine. Motor behavior was assessed by means of the beam-walking paradigm. Three days after surgeries, the animals were sacrificed and the left and right sides of the pons and the cerebellar hemispheres were extracted. Tissues were prepared for noradrenaline analysis by means of high performance liquid chromatography.We observed that the yohimbine-treated animals had a noradrenaline increase in the right side of the pons and a decrease in the right cerebellar hemisphere.It is concluded that the blockage of the alpha-2 receptors leads to an increase of noradrenaline in the locus coeruleus, which retards the effects of the cerebral injury.

This paper aims to discuss and analyze the role of mathematics in neurodevelopment, for which discusses the historical, ontogenetic and physiological bases involved. The methodology of this paper is a deductive analysis, describing the use of mathematics in ancient cultures to the specialization of brain regions. Sensory perceptions are useful for the acquisition and development of cortical functions thus sensory stimulations is essential for the maturation of specialized neurologic functions.
