1. EFFECT OF SYSTEMIC RESISTANCE INDUCTORS ON PR´S ENZYMATIC ACTIVITIES AND SEVERITY OF MANGO ANTHRACNOSE

Abstract

Background: anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) is an important disease in mango (Mangifera indica) due to its worldwide distribution and inducting of severe epidemics in vegetative and reproductive states, causing significant losses. In nature, plants produce defense mechanisms to protect themselves from biotic and abiotic factors by increasing the synthesis of secondary metabolites and enzymes involving processes such as the accumulation of phenolic compounds, β-1, 3-glucanases and chitinases. Objective: in the present work, the increase in the accumulation of phenolic compounds and enzymes related to pathogenesis β-1, 3-glucanases and chitinases was evaluated as a function of inducers of systemic resistance acquired: acibenzolar-S-methyl, salicylic acid and sodium phosphonate (phosphite). Methodology: the applications of treatments were initiated when the plants were approximately 2 years old (6 months of acclimation), the treatments were applied via foliage, the foliage sampling for the enzymatic analysis was performed taken at 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 days after inoculations (dai) and the variables evaluated were: phenolic compounds concentration, enzymatic activity of β-1,3-glucanasess (GLU) and chitinases (CHI) by chromatographic methods, also the incubation period, incidence, severity were evaluated. Results: analysis of variance, growth dynamics and correlation showed that those treatments where a resistance inducer was applied had significantly lower incidence and severity levels than the control, as well longer incubation periods. The dynamics of phenolic compound concentration and enzymatic activity were similar in all treatments except for control, observing peaks at 5 and 20 days after application. In addition, a significant correlation between the variables: area under the progress curve of the accumulation of phenolic compounds and activity of β-1, 3-glucanases and chitinases with the anthracnose incidence, severity and incubation period could be observed. Implications: in future studies it is recommended to analyze the behavior of treatments in multiple cultivars. Conclusion: these results contribute to the mango agronomic management in the region as precedent in the search to low environmental impact alternatives for diseases management, also contributing to the determination of disease’s etiology.

Abstract

La investigación aborda el problema del manejo de la noticia delictiva en los medios de comunicación masiva y la criminología mediática que se genera en la percepción de los habitantes de los centros poblados de la ciudad de Moquegua durante el año 2019 y, luego, en sus actitudes. Como objetivo general de investigación se plantea caracterizar el manejo de la noticia delictiva en los medios de comunicación masiva y determinar la medida en que se produce la influencia de la criminología mediática generada por los medios masivos en la actitud de los habitantes de los centros poblados en la ciudad de Moquegua. La investigación es de tipo descriptivo y transversal; se empleó el enfoque cuantitativo como consecuencial del planteamiento del problema y posterior respuesta a la validación de hipótesis. Se tomó como población de estudio a los pobladores de los cinco centros poblados de la ciudad: Los Ángeles, San Antonio, San Francisco, Estuquiña y El Rayo. Como técnicas e instrumentos de investigación se consideró la técnica del análisis de contenido, la entrevista y la escala de actitudes, siendo sus instrumentos, la ficha de análisis de contenido, la guía de entrevista y la Escala de Likert, respectivamente. Los resultados obtenidos son producto del análisis y discusión de datos, en el cual se concluye que el manejo de la noticia delictiva por los medios de comunicación masiva se caracteriza por la subjetividad y el sensacionalismo.

Abstract

The Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is widely used to convert signals from the time domain into a time–frequency representation. This representation has well known limitations regarding time–frequency resolution. In this paper, we present a set of MATLAB functions to compute a transform, which uses the basic concept of the Short-Time Fourier Transform, but fixes the window size in the frequency domain instead of in the time domain. This approach is simpler than similar existing methods, such as adaptive STFT or multi-resolution STFT, and in particular it requires neither the filters of multi-resolution techniques, nor the evaluation of the local signal characteristics of adaptive techniques. An illustrative example is presented and compared with the Morlet wavelet transform. Abstract

The Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is widely used to convert signals from the time domain into a time–frequency representation. This representation has well-known limitations regarding time–frequency resolution. In this paper we use the basic concept of the Short-Time Fourier Transform, but fix the window size in the frequency domain instead of in the time domain. This approach is simpler than similar existing methods, such as adaptive STFT and multi-resolution STFT, and in particular it requires neither the band-pass filter banks of multi-resolution techniques, nor the evaluation of local signal characteristics of adaptive techniques. Three case studies are analyzed and the results show that the proposed method allows better identification of signal components compared to standard STFT, multi-resolution STFT and Adaptive Optimal-Kernel Time Frequency Representation, although the method is not computationally efficient in its present form. Some synthetic and real world signals are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Abstract

Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. Abstract

El objetivo de esta investigacion fue evaluar algunos parametros fisicoquimicos de calidad en frutos de guayaba con presencia de Conotrachelus dimidiatus (Champion) en estado larval. Se establecio un diseno experimental completamente al azar con 15 y 24 repeticiones. Se determino el peso, firmeza, diametro, longitud, color, solidos solubles totales, acidez titulable y vitamina C en frutos de guayaba variedad Media China. La presencia de larvas de C. dimidiatus disminuyo significativamente el peso, la longitud y el diametro ecuatorial del fruto al presentar valores de 20.73 g, 37.96 mm y 31.36 mm, respectivamente. El contenido de vitamina C decrecio de 11.71 a 2.80 mg∙100 g-1. El crecimiento y desarrollo de C. dimidiatus al interior del fruto hace necesario implementar metodos eficientes de control que permitan la cosecha de frutos inocuos para su consumo

Este taller consta de dos sesiones, una informativa y otra práctica con fósiles reales, y modelos y réplicas 3D, seleccionados a partir del registro fósil de Canarias del Neógeno y Cuaternario (últimos 23 millones de años). Para la validación de los datos de las encuestas al alumnado sobre la motivación y creatividad del taller, se utilizó un cuestionario previo de afección y conocimientos; además, tras el taller, se cumplimentó un cuestionario de aprendizaje. Los resultados son significativos, destacando de entre ellos, por su originalidad, el uso de modelos 3D que favorece la distinción de organismos a nivel de especie. Es evidente el interés del alumnado por aprender sobre la tecnología 3D, y que el conocimiento del Cambio Climático a través de los fósiles se valora como una manera motivadora y creativa para su aprendizaje. Abstract

We present an evaluation of earthworm fauna in Sao Miguel Island (Azores, Portugal) revealing that it is rich in species in relation to its size and nature. Four families (Acanthodrilidae, Lumbricidae, Megascolecidae and Rhinodrilidae), 15 genera and 27 species were inventoried. About 74% were Palearctic species and 26% were Intertropical, mainly invasive earthworms originating from South-East Asia, of which Amynthas corticis Kingberg, 1867 was most dominant. The first comprehensive checklist of Sao Miguel earthworms is detailed, and the outdated nomenclature is improved, unifying synonymous taxa such as Lumbricus azoricus Eisen, 1869 and Allolobophoridella eiseni Levinsen, 1884. Seven new earthworm species records are given, highlighting Lumbricus friendi Cognetti, 1904 and Amynthas diffringens Baird, 1869 as cited for the first time in Macaronesia, and therefore expanding their known geographic range to the northern border of this region. Moreover, richness and composition of species were evaluated in relation to environmental and anthropogenic characteristics, including soil properties, altitude, land use intensity or distance to urban nuclei. Our results demonstrated that soil pH affected the establishment of species and that organic matter is positively associated with abundance of some non-native lumbricids (e.g. the anecic Octodrilus complanatus Duges, 1828) and negatively related to richness and abundance of exotic species such as Amynthas corticis, Amynthas gracilis Kingberg, 1867 and Pontoscolex corethrurus Muller, 1857. Results suggested that land use intensity, represented as five categories ranging from undisturbed sites with native vegetation to sites under intensive agriculture exploitation, is a good predictor of species composition. Higher values of diversity and density of Intertropical species were found in more intensively exploited locations. Moreover, the Palearctic lumbricids, although present in all the disturbance categories tested, were the most diverse group at higher altitudes. The species Dendrodrilus rubidus tenuis Eisen, 1864 and Lumbricus rubellus Hoffmeister, 1843, with narrow distribution range, showed a trend towards natural, non-intensive (NI) and low intensity (LI) systems. Our results indicate that anthropogenic disturbance and altitude are the main drivers of earthworm diversity on the island of Sao Miguel, making these animals good indicators for land use intensity. Therefore, earthworm surveys may help design conservation programs in protected areas.

En el presente trabajo se cuantifico el rendimiento en el cultivo de maiz en cuatro sistemas de labranza: labranza de conservacion (Lc), labranza cero sin mantillo (Lo), labranza superficial con rastra (Rm) y labranza con arado de discos (Ar); considerando factores como densidad de plantas, mazorcas por planta, y granos por mazorca. El diseno experimental utilizado fue parcelas divididas con dos factores y dos repeticiones por localidad; el factor B representado por la parcela chica bajo los cuatro tratamientos; como parcela dividida en el factor A, representada por la parcela grande aplicando subsoleo y sin subsoleo. La ubicacion del estudio fue en las parcelas localidades: La Tinaja, La Croix, San Isidro y Alista; la semilla empleada fue criolla de la zona, empleandose 20 kg ha-1, la fertilizacion empleada fue la formula 100 - 60 - 00 depositandose a la siembra todo el fosforo, el restante distribuido a la primera y segunda escarda. Los resultados obtenidos manifiestan que el rendimiento del maiz fue menor en labranza cero sin mantillo, los mejores resultados fueron para Lc con 8 ton ha-1 las comunidades de la Tinaja y la Croix; para Ar se registraron valores superiores a 6 ton ha-1 en los sitios de San Isidro y Alista. De la comparacion entre tratamientos se determina que las condiciones de clima y suelo ejercen variabilidad sobre el rendimiento, identificando que la Lc no siempre resulta la mejor opcion para obtener los mejores rendimientos ya que Ar tambien alcanzo valores superiores en otros sitios. EnglishThe increase in demand for food has forced human beings to the search and adoption of production systems and techniques. In this paper, the maize yield was quantified in four tillage systems: conservation tillage (Lc), no-tillage without mulch (Lo), shallow tillage with harrow (Rm) and disc plow tillage (Ar); considering factors such as plant density, ears per plant and grains per ear. The experimental design was split plots with two factors and two replications per locality; B factor represented by the small plot under four treatments; split plot in the A factor, represented by the large plot using subsoiling and without subsoiling. The location of the study was on plots in the locations: La Tinaja, La Croix, San Isidro and Alista; Creole seed was used in the area, using 20 kg ha-1, the used fertilization was the 100-60-00 Formula; all Phosphorus was deposited on the sowing, the remaining was distributed at the first and second weeding. The obtained results demonstrated that the maize yield was lower in no-tillage without mulch treatment, the best results were at Lc with 8 ton ha-1 in "La Tinaja" and "La Croix" communities; For Ar, higher than 6 ton ha-1 values were registered in the San Isidro and Alista sites. From the comparison among treatments, it is determined that the conditions of climate and soil exert variability on yield, identifying that Lc is not always the best option to get the best yield since Ar also reached higher values in other sites.

For the first time, Tetranychus ludeni Zacher and Acalitus orthomera (Keifer) were reported in addition to T. urticae Koch in cultivated blackberries, Rubus fruticosus L., at Zapotitlan de Vadillo, Jalisco, Mexico. A total of 219 organisms were collected, 40 specimens of A. orthomera, 117 of T. ludeni and 62 of T. urticae. Current distribution of the species in the country and damage to cultivation were discussed.

This is an investigation of the earthworm species identified in the evergreen laurel forests of La Palma and Hierro, characterised by the presence of Palaearctic species and to a lesser extent by an exotic component of different origins such as Amynthas corticis (native to Southeast Asia), Microscolex phosphoreus (South America) and Ocnerodrilus occidentalis (Central America). There is little evidence of local speciation, confirming that this ancient forest (more than 300 000 years old) does not harbour endemic species. Soil pH and moisture influence the spatial ordination of some earthworm species. However, anthropogenic disturbance, greatly intensified since the fifteenth century, emerges as the strongest factor to explain their distribution, particularly of the tropical invasives, e.g. A. corticis and O. occidentalis, which once established are difficult to remove. Abstract

Field surveys have provided new earthworm records for Madeira and Porto Santo, subtropical islands part of central-eastern, oceanic Macaronesia, belonging to three families: Acanthodrilidae, Lumbricidae and Megascolecidae; although we found no evidence of endemic or native species. The first records from Macaronesia of Dendrobaena pseudohortensis , Dendrodrilus rubidus tenuis and Octolasion cyaneum are included, increasing their known distribution. Eight peregrine species are cited for Porto Santo (no previous records) and eight for Madeira, mostly of Palaearctic origin; their introduction is presumed not to have occurred before humans arrived on the islands. The number of introduction events emerges as the most consistent predictor of the establishment of invasive species. The new data presented contribute to a better understanding of the earthworm colonization and the primary factors that determine the present distribution patterns of species are discussed. Human activity appears to be a strong influence on the distribution of the newly recorded species throughout the study area. We also make some ecological observations: soil pH and organic matter as variables influence the spatial ordination of some earthworm species. Affinities are evident with the Canary Island fauna and to a lesser extent with that of continental areas west of the Strait of Gibraltar and within the Mediterranean basin. The diversity of earthworm communities is linked with the arrival of European colonists and agro-commercial activities, which began almost six centuries ago. It is anticipated that the number of earthworm species will continue to increase, since introductions from other parts of the world are highly probable.

Abstract

This article analyzes the propagation modes of ultrasound waves inside an electrical cable in order to assess its behavior as an acoustic transmission channel. A theoretical model for propagation of elastic waves in electric power cables is presented. The power cables are represented as viscoelastic-layered cylindrical structures with a copper core and a dielectric cover. The model equations then have been applied and numerically resolved for this and other known structures such as solid and hollow cylinders. The results are compared with available data from other models. Several experimental measures were carried out and were compared with results from the numerical simulations. Experimental and simulated results showed a significant difference between elastic wave attenuation inside standard versus bare, low-voltage power cables.

Abstract

An accurate survey of the earthworm fauna of Gomera produced 27 species representing five families. Five species are new records for Gomera, and another (Murchieona minuscula) is new for the Canary Islands. The chorological data, obtained from 62 sampling localities, reveal the affinity of each species for the different vegetation zones. The group of taxa Amynthas, Metaphire californica and Pithemera bicincta is widespread throughout the banana groves in the arid basal belt, whereas lumbricid species like Dendrobaena cognettii, Lumbricus rubellus, and Octolasion lacteum are common in the laurel forest of the subhumid montane zone. The origin of the Gomera fauna is clearly linked to human action, and less so to possible remote natural means. The faunistic affinity with other islands of Macharonesia, with the Maghreb and the southwestern biogeographic zones of the Mediterranean is discussed.

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a new class of current sensor based on active materials for high-voltage transmission systems. This current sensor is an innovative design with respect to conventional current measurement transformers. The alternating current signal to be measured induces a magnetic field in an emitter which consists of a magnetostrictive material. The emitter transforms the current magnetic energy into mechanical energy in the form of mechanical waves due to the alternating nature of the induced magnetic field. These waves are transmitted through a dielectric structure until a piezoelectric stack, the receiver, is reached which converts the mechanical energy back into electrical energy. An electronic signal module processes this low electrical current and estimates the primary current to be measured. A numerical model has been developed to evaluate the preliminary design. A small scale prototype has been built and tested to demonstrate the feasibility of the current sensor. Experimental data have been used to fit the damping parameters of the model.

Abstract

Spectra of B stars in the wavelength range of 911-1100 A have been obtained with the EURD spectrograph onboard the Spanish satellite MINISAT-01 with ~5 A spectral resolution. IUE spectra of the same stars have been used to normalize Kurucz models to the distance, reddening and spectral type of the corresponding star. The comparison of 8 main-sequence stars studied in detail (alpha Vir, epsilon Tau, lambda Tau, tau Tau, alpha Leo, zeta Lib, theta Oph, and sigma Sgr) shows agreement with Kurucz models, but observed fluxes are 10-40% higher than the models in most cases. The difference in flux between observations and models is higher in the wavelength range between Lyman alpha and Lyman beta. We suggest that Kurucz models underestimate the FUV flux of main-sequence B stars between these two Lyman lines. Computation of flux distributions of line-blanketed model atmospheres including non-LTE effects suggests that this flux underestimate could be due to departures from LTE, although other causes cannot be ruled out. We found the common assumption of solar metallicity for young disk stars should be made with care, since small deviations can have a significant impact on FUV model fluxes. Two peculiar stars (rho Leo and epsilon Aqr), and two emission line stars (epsilon Cap and pi Aqr) were also studied. Of these, only epsilon Aqr has a flux in agreement with the models. Abstract

This report reviews and compares all therapies that have shown efficacy in depression and Parkinson's disease, although some are not in current use and others are at the experimental stage. They include pharmacological modification of neurotransmitter pathways, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), sleep deprivation, psychosurgery, electrical stimulation through cerebral electrodes, and transcranial magnetic stimulation. Stemming from a pathophysiological model that stresses the brain as an open, complex, and nonlinear system, all therapies have been attributed a common mechanism of action. This report suggests that the therapeutic isomorphism is related to their ability to help the CNS deactivate cortical-subcortical circuits that are dysfunctionally coupled. These circuits are self-organized among neurons of their informational subsystem (rapid conduction) and modulating subsystem (slow conduction). Finally, this report extends the analysis and comparison of these therapies to some cardiac arrhythmias.

Abstract

Pre-main sequence (PMS) binaries are surrounded by circumbinary disks from which matter falls onto both components. The material dragged from the circumbinary disk flows onto each star through independent streams channelled by the variable gravitational field. The action of the bar-like potential is most prominent in high eccentricity systems made of two equal mass stars. AK Sco is a unique PMS system composed of two F5 stars in an orbit with e=0.47. Henceforth, it is an ideal laboratory to study matter infall in binaries and its role in orbit circularization. In this letter, we report the detection of a 1.3mHz ultra low frequency oscillation in the ultraviolet light curve at periastron passage. This oscillation last 7 ks being most likely fed by the gravitational energy released when the streams tails spiralling onto each star get in contact at periastron passage enhancing the accretion flow; this unveils a new mechanism for angular momentum loss during pre-main sequence evolution and a new type of interacting binary.

Since December 1999, ESA's large X-ray space observatory XMM-Newton operates in a highly eccentric 48-h orbit which allows for long uninterrupted exposure times. The three payload instruments EPIC, RGS, and OM yield scientific data of high quality and sensitivity. We report here on the current timing capabilities of all three instruments by showing results from analyses on relative and absolute timing. In this context we discuss the process of correlating local onboard event arrival times to terrestrial time frames and present some detailed results from time correlation analyses. This involves investigations on the performance of the onboard quartz oscillator that have been performed. In addition we describe problematic timing data anomalies in the EPIC-pn data and their treatment by the SAS. We show recent examples of timing analyses.

Abstract

There is increasing evidence suggesting that depression is associated with a certain degree of cognitive dysfunction. However, there is still debate on whether this dysfunction is only substantially associated with the most severe forms of depression, on whether or not it decreases in parallel with clinical response, and on the role played in these changes by psychotropic medications. In order to clarify these questions, we analyzed the performance in several cognitive tasks that involved attention and working memory of 40 untreated subjects with a diagnosis of dysthymia or major depressive disorder without melancholia. The protocol used included three audioverbal tasks: vocal reaction time (VRT), inverse spelling (IS) and text repetition (TR). The protocol was also administered to 20 healthy volunteers that were used as a comparison group. The same battery of assessments was administered 2 months later to all 60 subjects. At the time of the second assessment, patients (but not healthy volunteers) were on antidepressant medication, in accordance with common clinical practice. The authors found a longer VRT in patients versus healthy volunteers at baseline. VRT did not decrease in patients that responded to treatment. However, there was an improvement in VRT in patients that took sertraline (n=16) compared to subjects taking imipramine (n=11). This fact was not attributable to differences in antidepressant response. Performance in the two other tasks was globally worse in the patient group than in the comparison group, and there was also an absence of improvement in the scores of patients who responded to treatment. However, when the sample was stratified by illness duration, individuals with less than 10 years from the first episode of depression showed a decrease in IS errors compared to the healthy volunteers. It is concluded that patients with nonmelancholic depression suffer from cognitive dysfunction, that this dysfunction persists after clinical improvement and that at least attention is influenced by the type of medication taken. Time from onset of the disorder also seems to influence changes in cognitive performance.

A growing body of experimental data usually finds a slightly lower activation in the left hemisphere than in the right in depressive syndromes, whereas the opposite occurs in mania. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) seems to have a distinctive lateralized effect with manic or depressed patients. These clinical findings provide new elements for discussion of the significance of unbalanced hemispherical activation as a biological substrate in affective disorders. Based on these data and on the theories of chaos and complexity, a hypothesis for the physiopathology of affective disorders and the functional mechanism of TMS is proposed. This hypothesis is in agreement with valence theory.

This work attempts to explore the association between depression and prosody impairment through acoustic techniques of voice analysis. For this purpose, we selected 10 quantitative vocal parameters, obtained instrumentally, and related to the variability and psychomotor control of phonation, which we have considered as prosody indicators. The sample consisted of 23 patients with diagnosis DSM-III-R of major depression and a control group of 20 healthy volunteers. We obtained results in 7 of the 10 acoustic parameters that suggest reduced prosody in depressed subjects. In a second voice test, carried out 2 months after baseline situation, and while patients were under antidepressant treatment, it was not possible to demonstrate that all these prosody indicators change to normality in those 13 subjects who clinically improved.

The REMOT (Remote Experiment Monitoring and conTrol) project was financed by 1996 by the European Community in order to investigate the possibility of generalizing the remote access to scientific instruments. After the feasibility of this idea was demonstrated, the DYNACORE (DYNAmically, COnfigurable Remote Experiment monitoring and control) project was initiated as a REMOT follow-up. Its purpose is to develop software technology to support scientists in two different domains, astronomy and plasma physics. The resulting system allows (1) simultaneous multiple user access to different experimental facilities, (2) dynamic adaptability to different kinds of real instruments, (3) exploitation of the communication infrastructures features, (4) ease of use through intuitive graphical interfaces, and (5) additional inter-user communication using off-the-shelf projects such as video-conference tools, chat programs and shared blackboards.

We have investigated the kinetics of exit from the resting state of BHK cells which had been arrested by isoleucine deprivation, serum starvation, or high temperature in the case of three ts G1 mutants. In addition, we have studied the effect of imposing a secondary deprivation on cells which had been released from one of the above mentioned blocks. The results obtained show that the quiescent states reached by BHK cells following serum or isoleucine deprivation cannot be differentiated on the basis of the exit kinetics from Smith and Martin's probabilistic A-state. Nevertheless, the response of cells to secondary deprivation is different, depending on the nature of the primary arresting condition used, reflecting physiological differences between the different resting states. A model is presented which postulates that cycle transition specific genes require the presence of different proliferative agents for their expression.

Three different temperature sensitive mutants derived from the Syrian hamster cell line BHK 21 were found to have greatly reduced DNA synthesis at the non-permissive temperature. These mutants are distinct by complementation analysis and behave at the non-permissive temperature as cell cycle traverse defective mutants. Microfluorometric analysis of mutant populations arrested at the non-permissive temperature shows an accumulation of cells with G1 DNA content. Mutants ts 13 and ts HJ4 synchronized in G1 by serum or isoleucine deprivation and shifted to the non-permissive temperature at the time of release do not enter the S phase, while in the case of mutant ts 11 preincubation at the non-permissive temperature before release is required to completely prevent its entry into S. Ts 13 and ts 11 are able to traverse the S phase at the non-permissive temperature when synchronized at the boundary G1/S; in this case, preincubation of ts 11 at the non-permissive temperature before release does not affect the ability of these cells to perform DNA synthesis. On the other hand, ts HJ4 appears to traverse S only partially when tested under similar conditions. Temperature shift experiments of mutant populations at different times after isoleucine synchronization suggest that ts 13 and ts 11 are blocked at the non-permissive temperature in early G1, whereas ts HJ4 is probably affected near the initiation of DNA synthesis, or in some early S function.

The contribution of A supergiant stars to the return of mass and energy to the interstellar medium is not very important. Abbott (1982) analised a sample of early stars and concluded that B and A supergiants provided less than 8 % of the mass input to the ISM by stellar winds. However, A-type supergiants are important in the framework of the stellar winds-mass loss phenomenology since they are located at the boundary between hot and cool stars, where radiative acceleration may not be sufficiently efficient to drive the wind.

SOMATIC cell hybridisation can reveal complementation between genetic markers1, and interspecific hybridisation provides a means to study the mechanisms involved in complementation. When the phenotypes of both parental cells are distinguishable at the molecular level, two complementation mechanisms can be recognised2. When the allele contributed by the wild type parental cell overcomes the block in the biochemical pathway characteristic of the mutant parent, products characteristic of both species should be present in the hybrid. Alternatively, if either allele acts exclusively on its own pathway, that is the wild-type allele cannot act in trans, the blockage due to the mutation remains and only the wild-type product would be expected to be synthesised in the hybrid.

Abstract

Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets.
