With the increasing integration level of wind generation over time, different Wind power plants (WPPs) types were integrated in a weak transmission system region. This raises challenges regarding voltage control schemes that have to be implemented in order to maintain the reliability of the system. Thus, thorough dynamic studies have to be performed to optimize the voltage control schemes of the WPPs which should be followed by field testing to ensure a reliable operation. This paper presents the Hydro-Québec operational experience with the implementation of a voltage control strategy scheme to coordinate the voltage regulation between a type-III WPP and two synchronous condensers at a common point of coupling in a region with two type-II WPPs. To better assess the contribution of Wind Power Plants (WPPs) during disturbances, Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie (HQT), the main Transmission System Operator (TSO) in the Quebec Interconnection, uses on-line monitoring to record data at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) of each WPP. This data is used to analyse their performance during voltage and frequency disturbances. Until recently, very few WPPs were able to provide Inertial Response (IR) for under-frequency events. On December 28th 2015, a generation loss of 1700 MW caused a frequency nadir of 59.08 Hz on the system, to which most WPPs required to provide IR contributed significantly. The analysis of the event showed that the behaviour of the WPPs had a significant effect on the recovery of the system frequency. This paper presents the performance analysis of WPPs during this underfrequency event. The analysis is based on data collected from 25 large-scale WPPs in operation and equipped with the IR feature as required by HQT. Field measurements and simulation results are used to emphasize the effect of the active power reduction during the recovery phase. This paper presents the Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie experience regarding the grid code compliance tests that have been performed for the integration of wind power plants using type-III and type-IV technologies. Tests discussed in this paper were conducted in two phases: validation of the performance requirements for each project and type tests on a single wind turbine generator for each technology involved. The paper presents examples of results for each test module and measurements from online monitoring. Wind turbine generators equipped with the inertial response feature have been in operation on the Hydro-Québec system since 2012. As part of the validation and performance test program carried out at each wind power plant, on-line monitoring was used to evaluate the inertial response during under frequency events. Hydro-Québec Transénergie (HQT) has specific technical requirements for the connection of Wind Power Plants (WPPs). Compliance of specific WPPs with the requirements must be assessed via on-site tests that are described in a companion general validation test program. HQT has worked closely with ENERCON to ensure that the grid code could be fulfilled by its full-converter technology to be used for many projects in the province of Québec. The present paper focuses on the on-site Under Voltage Ride Through (UVRT) tests performed by ENERCON and HQT based on the related requirements. The HQT grid code and validation test program are briefly presented. Furthermore, the theoretical Fault Ride Through (FRT) performance of the ENERCON technology is explained and the testing equipment, setup and limitations are described.
