Abstract

Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system1. Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests2-5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced6 and satellite-derived approaches2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential outside agricultural and urban lands. Despite regional variation, the predictions demonstrated remarkable consistency at a global scale, with only a 12% difference between the ground-sourced and satellite-derived estimates. At present, global forest carbon storage is markedly under the natural potential, with a total deficit of 226 Gt (model range = 151-363 Gt) in areas with low human footprint. Most (61%, 139 Gt C) of this potential is in areas with existing forests, in which ecosystem protection can allow forests to recover to maturity. The remaining 39% (87 Gt C) of potential lies in regions in which forests have been removed or fragmented. Although forests cannot be a substitute for emissions reductions, our results support the idea2,3,9 that the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of diverse forests offer valuable contributions to meeting global climate and biodiversity targets.

Abstract

Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4 Gt), 54% (335.7 Gt), 22% (136.2 Gt) and 3% (18.7 Gt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17-34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. By quantifying the distribution of tree leaf types and their corresponding biomass, and identifying regions where climate change will exert greatest pressure on current leaf types, our results can help improve predictions of future terrestrial ecosystem functioning and carbon cycling.

Abstract

Determining the drivers of non-native plant invasions is critical for managing native ecosystems and limiting the spread of invasive species1,2. Tree invasions in particular have been relatively overlooked, even though they have the potential to transform ecosystems and economies3,4. Here, leveraging global tree databases5-7, we explore how the phylogenetic and functional diversity of native tree communities, human pressure and the environment influence the establishment of non-native tree species and the subsequent invasion severity. We find that anthropogenic factors are key to predicting whether a location is invaded, but that invasion severity is underpinned by native diversity, with higher diversity predicting lower invasion severity. Temperature and precipitation emerge as strong predictors of invasion strategy, with non-native species invading successfully when they are similar to the native community in cold or dry extremes. Yet, despite the influence of these ecological forces in determining invasion strategy, we find evidence that these patterns can be obscured by human activity, with lower ecological signal in areas with higher proximity to shipping ports. Our global perspective of non-native tree invasion highlights that human drivers influence non-native tree presence, and that native phylogenetic and functional diversity have a critical role in the establishment and spread of subsequent invasions.

Abstract

Abstract: Aim: To determine the relationships between the functional trait composition of forest communities and environmental gradients across scales and biomes and the role of species relative abundances in these relationships. Location: Global. Time period: Recent. Major taxa studied: Trees. Methods: We integrated species abundance records from worldwide forest inventories and associated functional traits (wood density, specific leaf area and seed mass) to obtain a data set of 99,953 to 149,285 plots (depending on the trait) spanning all forested continents. We computed community‐weighted and unweighted means of trait values for each plot and related them to three broad environmental gradients and their interactions (energy availability, precipitation and soil properties) at two scales (global and biomes). Results: Our models explained up to 60% of the variance in trait distribution. At global scale, the energy gradient had the strongest influence on traits. However, within‐biome models revealed different relationships among biomes. Notably, the functional composition of tropical forests was more influenced by precipitation and soil properties than energy availability, whereas temperate forests showed the opposite pattern. Depending on the trait studied, response to gradients was more variable and proportionally weaker in boreal forests. Community unweighted means were better predicted than weighted means for almost all models. Main conclusions: Worldwide, trees require a large amount of energy (following latitude) to produce dense wood and seeds, while leaves with large surface to weight ratios are concentrated in temperate forests. However, patterns of functional composition within‐biome differ from global patterns due to biome specificities such as the presence of conifers or unique combinations of climatic and soil properties. We recommend assessing the sensitivity of tree functional traits to environmental changes in their geographic context. Furthermore, at a given site, the distribution of tree functional traits appears to be driven more by species presence than species abundance.

Abstract

Aim: To determine the relationships between the functional trait composition of forest communities and environmental gradients across scales and biomes and the role of species relative abundances in these relationships. Location: Global. Time period: Recent. Major taxa studied: Trees. Methods: We integrated species abundance records from worldwide forest inventories and associated functional traits (wood density, specific leaf area and seed mass) to obtain a data set of 99,953 to 149,285 plots (depending on the trait) spanning all forested continents. We computed community‐weighted and unweighted means of trait values for each plot and related them to three broad environmental gradients and their interactions (energy availability, precipitation and soil properties) at two scales (global and biomes). Results: Our models explained up to 60% of the variance in trait distribution. At global scale, the energy gradient had the strongest influence on traits. However, within‐biome models revealed different relationships among biomes. Notably, the functional composition of tropical forests was more influenced by precipitation and soil properties than energy availability, whereas temperate forests showed the opposite pattern. Depending on the trait studied, response to gradients was more variable and proportionally weaker in boreal forests. Community unweighted means were better predicted than weighted means for almost all models. Main conclusions: Worldwide, trees require a large amount of energy (following latitude) to produce dense wood and seeds, while leaves with large surface to weight ratios are concentrated in temperate forests. However, patterns of functional composition within‐biome differ from global patterns due to biome specificities such as the presence of conifers or unique combinations of climatic and soil properties. We recommend assessing the sensitivity of tree functional traits to environmental changes in their geographic context. Abstract

Amazon forests are a key but poorly understood component of the global carbon cycle. If, as anticipated, they dry this century, they might accelerate climate change through carbon losses and changed surface energy balances. We used records from multiple long-term monitoring plots across Amazonia to assess forest responses to the intense 2005 drought, a possible analog of future events. Affected forest lost biomass, reversing a large long-term carbon sink, with the greatest impacts observed where the dry season was unusually intense. Relative to pre-2005 conditions, forest subjected to a 100-millimeter increase in water deficit lost 5.3 megagrams of aboveground biomass of carbon per hectare. The drought had a total biomass carbon impact of 1.2 to 1.6 petagrams (1.2 x 10(15) to 1.6 x 10(15) grams). Amazon forests therefore appear vulnerable to increasing moisture stress, with the potential for large carbon losses to exert feedback on climate change.

Abstract

The sensitivity of tropical forest carbon to climate is a key uncertainty in predicting global climate change. Although short-term drying and warming are known to affect forests, it is unknown if such effects translate into long-term responses. Here, we analyze 590 permanent plots measured across the tropics to derive the equilibrium climate controls on forest carbon. Maximum temperature is the most important predictor of aboveground biomass (−9.1 megagrams of carbon per hectare per degree Celsius), primarily by reducing woody productivity, and has a greater impact per °C in the hottest forests (>32.2°C). Our results nevertheless reveal greater thermal resilience than observations of short-term variation imply. To realize the long-term climate adaptation potential of tropical forests requires both protecting them and stabilizing Earth's climate.

Abstract

Una nueva especie del género Acanthocladus Klotzsch ex Hassk. se encontró durante la elaboración del tratamiento de la familia Polygalaceae para el Catálogo de las Plantasde Colombia. Se describe e ilustra Acanthocladus colombianus de los valles áridos interandinos ubicados en la Cordillera Oriental, departamento de Cundinamarca, y sediscuten sus relaciones morfológicas con su especie afín. Acanthocladus colombianus es similar a A. guayaquilensis B. Eriksen & Ståhl, sin embargo, difi ere de esta especiepor ser un árbol de 15 m de altura, con las ramitas teretes, las hojas más grandes, rígido-coriáceas, con 6--9 venas laterales, infl orescencias sésiles, y los sépalos externospilosos, 3--4 x 3--4 mm. Esta nueva especie representa el primer registro del géneropara los Andes. The phylogenetic relationship of the species of the genus Auricularia and its allied taxa were investigated using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of nuclear DNA. A molecular phylogenetic tree constructed using a total of 17 samples representing fi ve species and two outgroups indicates that the species of Auricularia form a monophyletic group. Within the genus Auricularia, A. mesenterica is basal and the remaining Auricularia species form three clades; the fi rst clade consists of A. auricula-judae; the second, of A. fuscosuccinea; and the third, of A. polytricha.

Abstract

[EN] The identity of the dominant root-associated microbial symbionts in a forest determines the ability of trees to access limiting nutrients from atmospheric or soil pools, sequester carbon and withstand the effects of climate change. Characterizing the global distribution of these symbioses and identifying the factors that control this distribution are thus integral to understanding the present and future functioning of forest ecosystems. Here we generate a spatially explicit global map of the symbiotic status of forests, using a database of over 1.1 million forest inventory plots that collectively contain over 28,000 tree species. Our analyses indicate that climate variables—in particular, climatically controlled variation in the rate of decomposition—are the primary drivers of the global distribution of major symbioses. We estimate that ectomycorrhizal trees, which represent only 2% of all plant species, constitute approximately 60% of tree stems on Earth. Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis dominates forests in which seasonally cold and dry climates inhibit decomposition, and is the predominant form of symbiosis at high latitudes and elevation. By contrast, arbuscular mycorrhizal trees dominate in aseasonal, warm tropical forests, and occur with ectomycorrhizal trees in temperate biomes in which seasonally warm-and-wet climates enhance decomposition. Continental transitions between forests dominated by ectomycorrhizal or arbuscular mycorrhizal trees occur relatively abruptly along climate-driven decomposition gradients; these transitions are probably caused by positive feedback effects between plants and microorganisms. Symbiotic nitrogen fixers—which are insensitive to climatic controls on decomposition (compared with mycorrhizal fungi)—are most abundant in arid biomes with alkaline soils and high maximum temperatures. ilustraciones, fotografías, mapas Los resultados de la caracterización biofísica que se publican en este volumen (Rangel et al., 2019) indican que la Serranía de Manacacías presenta una alta importancia ecológica con muestras represen- tativas de ecosistemas que se encuentran con una baja representatividad en el SINAP. Adicionalmente, estos ecosistemas presentan altos valores de biodiversidad y mantienen las condiciones ideales para el mantenimiento, reproducción y cría de especies de flora y fauna, en los grupos de mamíferos, rep- tiles, aves, anfibios, mariposas y crustáceos. Varias especies registradas en el área se encuentran bajo categorías de amenaza según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN), o se mencionan en los apéndices I y II de la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres (CITES). Para la región se obtuvieron nuevos registros de flora y fauna a nivel local y regional. La segunda parte de la obra, es una excelente presentación fotográfica de las especies, sus hábitats, paisajes, lo que valoriza aún más la calidad y la eficacia del texto. El libro ofrece también una base de referencia para estudios en el área de la biodiversidad de los humedales y sabanas de Arauca, de sus principales componentes y de sus posibles desarrollos y aplicaciones. Finalmente, se espera que la presente contribución aumenté los niveles de conocimientos de la región en la población, haciendo de las ciencias básicas un herramienta para el análisis de la realidad ambiental actual. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-12-01 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Tropical forests are known for their high diversity. Yet, forest patches do occur in the tropics where a single tree species is dominant. Such “monodominant” forests are known from all of the main tropical regions. For Amazonia, we sampled the occurrence of monodominance in a massive, basin-wide database of forest-inventory plots from the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). Utilizing a simple defining metric of at least half of the trees ≥ 10 cm diameter belonging to one species, we found only a few occurrences of monodominance in Amazonia, and the phenomenon was not significantly linked to previously hypothesized life history traits such wood density, seed mass, ectomycorrhizal associations, or Rhizobium nodulation. In our analysis, coppicing (the formation of sprouts at the base of the tree or on roots) was the only trait significantly linked to monodominance. While at specific locales coppicing or ectomycorrhizal associations may confer a considerable advantage to a tree species and lead to its monodominance, very few species have these traits. Mining of the ATDN dataset suggests that monodominance is quite rare in Amazonia, and may be linked primarily to edaphic factors. 45. Environmental drivers of forest structure and stem turnover across Venezuelan tropical forests

Abstract

Using data from 50 long-term permanent plots from across Venezuelan forests in northern South America, we explored large-scale patterns of stem turnover, aboveground biomass (AGB) and woody productivity (AGWP), and the relationships between them and with potential climatic drivers. We used principal component analysis coupled with generalized least squares models to analyze the relationship between climate, forest structure and stem dynamics. Two major axes associated with orthogonal temperature and moisture gradients effectively described more than 90% of the environmental variability in the dataset. Average turnover was 1.91 ± 0.10% year-1 with mortality and recruitment being almost identical, and close to average rates for other mature tropical forests. Turnover rates were significantly different among regions (p < 0.001), with the lowland forests in Western alluvial plains being the most dynamic, and Guiana Shield forests showing the lowest turnover rates. We found a weak positive relationship between AGB and AGWP, with Guiana Shield forests having the highest values for both variables (204.8 ± 14.3 Mg C ha-1 and 3.27 ± 0.27 Mg C ha-1 year-1 respectively), but AGB was much more strongly and negatively related to stem turnover. Our data suggest that moisture is a key driver of turnover, with longer dry seasons favoring greater rates of tree turnover and thus lower biomass, having important implications in the context of climate change, given the increases in drought frequency in many tropical forests. Regional variation in AGWP among Venezuelan forests strongly reflects the effects of climate, with greatest woody productivity where both precipitation and temperatures are high. Overall, forests in wet, low elevation sites and with slow turnover stored the greatest amounts of biomass. Although faster stand dynamics are closely associated with lower carbon storage, stem-level turnover rates and woody productivity did not show any correlation, indicating that stem dynamics and carbon dynamics are largely decoupled from one another.

Modern phylogenies, in combination with broad coverage of species inventory data, now allow for global biogeographic analyses that take species evolutionary distance into account. Here we present a classification of the world's tropical forests based on their phylogenetic similarity. We identify five principal floristic regions and their floristic relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. Our results do not support the traditional neo- versus paleotropical forest division but instead separate the combined American and African forests from their Indo-Pacific counterparts. We also find indications for the existence of a global dry forest region, with representatives in America, Africa, Madagascar, and India. Additionally, a northern-hemisphere Subtropical forest region was identified with representatives in Asia and America, providing support for a link between Asian and American northern-hemisphere forests.

Abstract

AimThe accurate mapping of forest carbon stocks is essential for understanding the global carbon cycle, for assessing emissions from deforestation, and for rational land-use planning. Remote sensing (RS) is currently the key tool for this purpose, but RS does not estimate vegetation biomass directly, and thus may miss significant spatial variations in forest structure. We test the stated accuracy of pantropical carbon maps using a large independent field dataset.LocationTropical forests of the Amazon basin. The permanent archive of the field plot data can be accessed at: http://dx.doi.org/10.5521/FORESTPLOTS.NET/2014_1MethodsTwo recent pantropical RS maps of vegetation carbon are compared to a unique ground-plot dataset, involving tree measurements in 413 large inventory plots located in nine countries. The RS maps were compared directly to field plots, and kriging of the field data was used to allow area-based comparisons.ResultsThe two RS carbon maps fail to capture the main gradient in Amazon forest carbon detected using 413 ground plots, from the densely wooded tall forests of the north-east, to the light-wooded, shorter forests of the south-west. The differences between plots and RS maps far exceed the uncertainties given in these studies, with whole regions over- or under-estimated by > 25%, whereas regional uncertainties for the maps were reported to be Main conclusionsPantropical biomass maps are widely used by governments and by projects aiming to reduce deforestation using carbon offsets, but may have significant regional biases. Carbon-mapping techniques must be revised to account for the known ecological variation in tree wood density and allometry to create maps suitable for carbon accounting. The use of single relationships between tree canopy height and above-ground biomass inevitably yields large, spatially correlated errors. This presents a significant challenge to both the forest conservation and remote sensing communities, because neither wood density nor species assemblages can be reliably mapped from space.

Abstract

Se estudiaron las interrelaciones entre la vegetación y el relieve en dos topo-secuencias correspondientes al Parque Nacional Aguaro-Guariquito, estado Guárico, Venezuela. La primera es un paisaje de altiplanicie de Mesa cubierta con una sabana bien drenada (sitio 1). En las aéreas disectadas de esta altiplanicie se presentan geofracturas con suelos permanentemente saturados donde se desarrollan los morichales (sitio 2). La otra topo-secuencia corresponde a una planicie eólica con médanos, cuyos suelos provienen de materiales originados de la altiplanicie de Mesa y están cubiertos por sabanas húmedas (sitio 3), las cuales permanecen anegadas durante tres meses (junio - agosto) con una lámina de agua de 0.25 ± 0.10 m. Las zonas más deprimidas en esta topo-secuencia conducen a condiciones temporales de extremo anegamiento, donde se presenta el congrial (sitio 4), una comunidad dominada por Acosmium nitens y el saladillal (sitio 5), una vegetación caracterizada por la presencia de Caraipa llanorum. El congrial es anegado durante siete meses (junio - diciembre), con una lámina de agua de 1.02 ± 0.10 m. En contraste, el saladillal es inundado por seis meses (junio - noviembre) y la lámina de agua alcanza una altura de 0.80 ± 0.10 m. Las comunidades anegadas (sitios 2-5) se encuentran sobre suelos más ácidos (4.0 - 4.6 unidades) que los característicos de la sabana bien drenada (sitio 1; 5.0 unidades). El pH estuvo asociado con la concentración de aluminio. El contenido de materia orgánica fue mayor en el sitio anegado (8.59 %) que en los estacionalmente inundables y en el bien drenado (0.7- 1.0 %). El hábitat anegado es restrictivo de la biodiversidad. El congrial, el saladillal, la sabana húmeda y el morichal presentan 52, 52, 56 y 74 especies, respectivamente. En contraste, la sabana bien drenada presenta 114 especies. La similitud entre el congrial y el saladillal fue de 56 %. En relación con las otras comunidades, la similitud fue menor del 38 %. Los resultados indican que las formas de vidas Teroherbae y Teroculmi (e.g., especies anuales de gramínea, ciperácea y herbácea) conforman en promedio un 43 % del espectro de las formas biológicas. We studied the relationships between vegetation and topography in two topo-sequences corresponding to the National Park Aguaro-Guariquito, Guárico State, Venezuela. The first is a high plain or Mesa landscape covered by a well-drained Savanna (site 1). In the dissected areas of this plateau geofractures occur with permanently saturated soils where the palm Mauritia flexuosa (morichals) grows (site 2). The other topo-sequence corresponds to an eolic plain with soils consisting of materials originating from the Mesa plateau and covered by wet savanna (site 3), which remains waterlogged for three months (June-August) with a water level of 0.25 ± 0.10 m. The most deprived areas in this topo-sequence feature temporary conditions of extreme flooding in which a community dominated by Acosmium nitens (congrial) occurs (site 4), and a vegetation characterized by the presence of Caraipa llanorum (saladillal) (Site 5). The congrial remains flooded for seven months(June-December), with a high water level of 1.02 ± 0.10 m. In contrast, the saladillal remains flooded for six months (June-November) and the water level reaches a height of 0.80 ± 0.10 m. Flooded communities (sites 2-5) are on more acidic soils (4.0 - 4.6 units) than those characteristic of the well-drained savanna (site 1; 5.0 units). The pH was associated with the aluminum concentration. The organic matter content was higher in flooded (8.59%) than in seasonally flooded and well-drained sites (0.7- 1.0 %). The flooded habitat restricts biodiversity. The congrial, saladillal, wet savanna and morichal featured 52, 52, 56 and 74 species, respectively. In contrast, well-drained Savanna has 114 species. The similarity between the saladillal and congrial was 56%. For other communities, similarity was less than 38%. The results indicate that life-forms of Teroculmi and Teroherbae (i.e., annual species of grasses, sedges and herbs) account for 43% of the average of the spectrum of biological forms.
