1. Beam stacking experiment at a fixed field alternating gradient accelerator

Abstract: A key challenge in particle accelerators is to achieve high peak intensity. Space charge is particularly strong at lower energy such as during injection and typically limits achievable peak intensity. The beam stacking technique can overcome this limitation by accumulating a beam at high energy where space charge is weaker. In beam stacking, a bunch of particles is injected and accelerated to high energy. This bunch continues to circulate, while a second and subsequent bunches are accelerated to merge into the first. It also allows the user cycle and acceleration cycles to be separated which is often valuable. Beam stacking is not possible in a time varying magnetic field, but a fixed field machine such as an fixed field alternating gradient accelerator (FFA) does not sweep the magnetic field. In this paper, we describe experimental demonstration of beam stacking of two beams at KURNS FFA in Kyoto University. The momentum spread and intensity of the beam was analyzed by study of the Schottky signal, demonstrating stacking with only a slight increase of momentum spread of the combined beams. The intensity of the first beam was, however, significantly reduced. rf knockout is the suspected source of the beam loss.

Abstract: Abstract The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) collaboration seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of ionization cooling, the technique by which it is proposed to cool the muon beam at a future neutrino factory or muon collider. The emittance is measured from an ensemble of muons assembled from those that pass through the experiment. A pure muon ensemble is selected using a particle-identification system that can reject efficiently both pions and electrons. The position and momentum of each muon are measured using a high-precision scintillating-fibre tracker in a 4 T solenoidal magnetic field. This paper presents the techniques used to reconstruct the phase-space distributions in the upstream tracking detector and reports the first particle-by-particle measurement of the emittance of the MICE Muon Beam as a function of muon-beam momentum.

3. Optics design of vertical excursion fixed-field alternating gradient accelerators

Abstract: Vertical excursion fixed-field alternating gradient accelerators can be designed with tunes that are invariant with respect to momentum and trajectories that are scaled images of each other displaced only in the vertical direction. This is possible using guiding fields that have a vertical exponential increase, with a skew quadrupole component in the magnet body and a solenoid component at the magnet ends. Numerical analysis was used in optimization due to the coupling effects on orbits and optics. In this paper, idealized magnetic fields are calculated from first principles, taking into account end fields. The parameter dependence of the optics and the dynamic aperture of the ring are calculated for the example of a ring with an approximately 25 m circumference that accelerates proton beams from 3 MeV to 12 MeV. The paper reports for the first time the design of such an accelerator lattice using tools specifically devised to analyze transverse coupled optics without the need for approximations.

Abstract: Muon beams of low emittance provide the basis for the intense, well-characterized neutrino beams necessary to elucidate the physics of flavor at a neutrino factory and to provide lepton-antilepton collisions at energies of up to several TeV at a muon collider. The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) aims to demonstrate ionization cooling, the technique by which it is proposed to reduce the phase-space volume occupied by the muon beam at such facilities. In an ionization-cooling channel, the muon beam passes through a material in which it loses energy. The energy lost is then replaced using rf cavities. The combined effect of energy loss and reacceleration is to reduce the transverse emittance of the beam (transverse cooling). A major revision of the scope of the project was carried out over the summer of 2014. The revised experiment can deliver a demonstration of ionization cooling. The design of the cooling demonstration experiment will be described together with its predicted cooling performance.

Abstract: The Technical Design for the COMET Phase-I experiment is presented in this paper. COMET is an experiment at J-PARC, Japan, which will search for neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons in the field of an aluminium nucleus ($\mu-e$ conversion, $\mu^- N \to e^- N$); a lepton flavor violating process. The experimental sensitivity goal for this process in the Phase-I experiment is $3.1\times10^{-15}$, or 90 % upper limit of branching ratio of $7\times 10^{-15}$, which is a factor of 100 improvement over the existing limit. The expected number of background events is 0.032. To achieve the target sensitivity and background level, the 3.2 kW 8 GeV proton beam from J-PARC will be used. Two types of detectors, CyDet and StrECAL, will be used for detecting the \mue conversion events, and for measuring the beam-related background events in view of the Phase-II experiment, respectively. Abstract: The properties of the neutrino provide a unique window on physics beyond that described by the standard model. The study of subleading effects in neutrino oscillations, and the race to discover CP-invariance violation in the lepton sector, has begun with the recent discovery that θ_{13}>0. The measured value of θ_{13} is large, emphasizing the need for a facility at which the systematic uncertainties can be reduced to the percent level. The neutrino factory, in which intense neutrino beams are produced from the decay of muons, has been shown to outperform all realistic alternatives and to be capable of making measurements of the requisite precision. Its unique discovery potential arises from the fact that only at the neutrino factory is it practical to produce high-energy electron (anti)neutrino beams of the required intensity. This paper presents the conceptual design of the neutrino factory accelerator facility developed by the European Commission Framework Programme 7 EUROν Design Study consortium. EUROν coordinated the European contributions to the International Design Study for the Neutrino Factory (the IDS-NF) collaboration. The EUROν baseline accelerator facility will provide 10^{21} muon decays per year from 12.6 GeV stored muon beams serving a single neutrino detector situated at a source-detector distance of between 1 500 km and 2 500 km. A suite of near detectors will allow definitive neutrino-scattering experiments to be performed.

Abstract: International audience; High precision measurements of the filters bandpass used on wide-field imagers mounted on large telescopes is critical for type Ia supernovae studies. A dedicated spectrophotometric bench is used to re-measure the now decommissioned ugriz filters used for the SNLS on CFHT-MegaCam. A full characterization of the optical response with respect to the location on the surface and the angle of incidence was performed for each filter. Strong variation over the filter surface is observed. Abstract: A fixed rf frequency acceleration scheme is required for rapid-acceleration and producing high-intensity beam in non-relativistic energy region. For these requirements, new-type of fixed rf frequency acceleration scheme called serpentine acceleration is applied in scaling FFAG. To examine a longitudinal motion with serpentine acceleration, longitudinal hamiltonian in scaling FFAG with fixed rf frequency is derived analytically. Then details of serpentine acceleration scheme in scaling FFAG are presented. To demonstrate serpentine acceleration in scaling FFAG, beam experiment has been done with electron scaling FFAG ring. Results are analyzed and confirm the serpentine acceleration in scaling FFAG. Finally, longitudinal design for ADS proton driver with this scheme is presented.

Abstract: The VIRGO Central Interferometer (CITF) is a short suspended interferometer operated with the central area elements of the VIRGO detector. The main motivation behind the CITF is to allow the integration and debugging of a large part of the subsystems of VIRGO while the construction of the long arms of the antenna is being completed. This will permit a faster commissioning of the full-size antenna. In fact, almost all the main components of the CITF, with the exception of the large mirrors and a few other details, are the same as those to be used for the full-size detector. Abstract: Fixed field alternating gradient (FFAG) accelerators are recently subject to a strong revival. They are usually designed in a circular shape; however, it would be an asset to guide particles with no overall bend in this type of accelerator. An analytical development of a straight FFAG cell which keeps zero-chromaticity is presented here. A magnetic field law is thus obtained, called “straight scaling law”, and an experiment has been conducted to confirm this zero-chromatic law. A straight scaling FFAG prototype has been designed and manufactured, and horizontal phase advances of two different energies are measured. Results are analyzed to clarify the straight scaling law.

Abstract: A way to accelerate muon beams rapidly with zero-chromatic fixed field alternating gradient (FFAG) rings is considered in this paper. It is based on the harmonic number jump acceleration and allows the use of constant frequency rf cavities, although the lattice is not isochronous. To overcome the limitations imposed by this acceleration method, a new type of zero-chromatic FFAG lattice, which includes dispersion suppressor insertions, is proposed. Design principles of such a lattice are presented. An example of a 3.6–12.6 GeV muon ring for the simultaneous acceleration of μ + and μ − beams is described. Step-wise particle tracking is used to demonstrate the large 6D acceptance of this scheme.

Abstract: As an intense neutron source for the boron neutron capture therapy system, a FFAG storage ring with Energy/emittance Recovery Internal Target (ERIT) has been developed in the Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI). In order to develop storage ring for ERIT scheme, the spiral sector and radial sector FFAG rings were designed and compared about performance in ERIT system. The 3-dimensional magnetic fields of these magnets were calculated with the field analysis code, TOSCA. The pole shape of magnet was carefully optimized checking the betatron tune. Tunes were computed by means of tracking simulations in field maps based on TOSCA models. In this paper, the FFAG magnet design for ERIT system and the construction of FFAG ring in KURRI are described.

Possible parameters of a 3.6–12.6 GeV muon ring using 200 MHz rf cavities is presented. Detailed particle tracking simulations are used to demonstrate the large 6D acceptance as well as the relatively good tolerance to errors of this scheme. The improvement of the current neutrino factory baseline scenario, using this type of FFAG ring, is finally discussed.

Abstract: The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a detailed study of ionization cooling to evaluate the feasibility of the technique. To carry out this program, MICE requires an efficient particle-identification (PID) system to identify muons. The Electron-Muon Ranger (EMR) is a fully-active tracking-calorimeter that forms part of the PID system and tags muons that traverse the cooling channel without decaying. The detector is capable of identifying electrons with an efficiency of 98.6%, providing a purity for the MICE beam that exceeds 99.8%. The EMR also proved to be a powerful tool for the reconstruction of muon momenta in the range 100-280 MeV/$c$., 22 pages, 19 figures

Abstract: The advanced interferometer network will herald a new era in observational astronomy. There is a very strong science case to go beyond the advanced detector network and build detectors that operate in a frequency range from 1 Hz-10 kHz, with sensitivity a factor ten better in amplitude. Abstract: This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. Abstract: The aim of the research presented in this paper was to propose a simple and cheap system, able to produce a macroscopic (centimetric) travel with a very high (nano-metric) resolution. The solution principle described yields a theoretically infinite travel range based on the accumulation of successive steps. The travel range of the prototype realised is equal to 2 cm , the size of the steps being about 20 nm . The actuation is based on the stick–slip effect: during the first stage of a step, the legs of the actuator slowly translate the carried structure; in the second stage the legs are moved back in their initial position very quickly, so that, thanks to their inertia, the structure stays at the same place. Each leg of the system, glued on a main frame, consists in a piezoelectric device working in shear mode, ended by a ruby hemisphere. The structure itself is in steel to get a sufficiently high inertia. An originality of the proposed translator is that the guiding elements of the structure (guiding grooves) are also used to transmit the motion. The friction force between the legs and the grooves can be tuned thanks to a magnet placed in the main frame, allowing to adjust the normal load on the legs. The paper presents the different functional elements of the translator and its electronic command system, and explains its functioning. The influence of several parameters (supported load, friction, resistive axial load) on the step size and thus on both the resolution, hence the speed of the system is then studied. Finally, the power losses are identified and estimated.

Abstract: We describe a novel configuration for a neutrino beam line that can simultaneously support both long and short baseline experiments. The neutrino beams originate from pions that are first focused by a magnetic horn, as in a conventional neutrino beam. However, in the case of nuPIL, the horn is followed by a magnetic lattice that is used to select the pion charge and then transports the pions in a production straight. This produces extremely pure neutrino and anti-neutrino beams, while minimizing the amount of beam power that is transported underground for the long-baseline physics program. This configuration greatly simplifies the civil construction leading to a large cost reduction. The principles of the design of nuPIL are presented, together with tracking results and the resulting neutrino flux. The potential of the facility for CP-violation searches, in the framework of the DUNE experiment, is discussed and compared to that of an optimized beam from LBNF.

Abstract: Neutrino beams produced from the decay of muons in a racetrack-like decay ring (the so called Neutrino Factory) provide a powerful way to study neutrino oscillation physics and, in addition, provide unique beams for neutrino interaction studies. The Neutrinos from STORed Muons (nuSTORM) facility uses a neutrino factory-like design. Due to the particular nature of nuSTORM, it can also provide an intense, very pure, muon neutrino beam from pion decay. This so-called «Neo-conventional» muon-neutrino beam from nuSTORM makes nuSTORM a hybrid neutrino factory. In this paper we describe the facility and give a detailed description of the neutrino beams that are available and the precision to which they can be characterized. We then show its potential for a neutrino interaction physics program and present sensitivity plots that indicate how well the facility can perform for short-baseline oscillation searches. Finally, we comment on the performance potential of a «Neo-conventional» muon neutrino beam optimized for long-baseline neutrino-oscillation physics.

Abstract: Sweet's syndrome (acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis, SS) may be considered a reactional dermatosis with numerous associated diseases. We describe a rare association between SS and acute sarcoidosis in a 55-year-old woman. The atypical feature of positive tuberculin reaction is discussed. In this association, diagnosis may be challenging with coexistent skin lesions of both diseases. Acute sarcoidosis should be considered when SS is accompanied with mediastinal lymphadenopathy, uveitis or erythema nodosum. Deep-seated nodular lesions in the context of SS are not always 'deep' SS lesions.

Abstract: Several experimental techniques have been developed and tested to improve the wavefront of low-loss mirrors used in the Virgo program. The most elaborated one, called `Corrective Coating Treatment', allows us to reach an R.M.S. wavefront of 1.5 nm at 633 nm on 100-mm diameter high reflectivity mirrors. The next development will be to make the same correction at 1064 nm, wavelength of the Virgo interferometer, on very large silica substrates (350 mm diameter).

Abstract: The LSST design foresees the use of six wide-band large optical filters that can alternatively be moved in front of the CCD camera. Each of the six filters has a different band-pass covering all the wavelengths from 300 nm to 1200 nm. The way to achieve this is to coat an optimized optical thin films stack on a filter substrate. Each filter requires a specific design using specific appropriate materials. The main characteristics of these filters, that constitute a real technological challenge, are: their relatively large size - their radii of curvature (about 5.6 m) that represent a sagitta of 12,5 mm that increases the uniformity complexity, the large rejection band requirements with transmission lower than 0.01 % out of the band and a transmission of 95 % over the band-pass. This paper proposes to show the problematic and the results obtained at LMA (Laboratoire des Materiaux Avances-FRANCE) to the purpose of realizing these filters using the IBS (Ion Beam Sputtering) deposition technique. The results obtained with High-Pass/Low-Pass structures will be presented. Experimental results will be shown concerning the R-band filter (552-691 nm). An overview of the work to be done to realize transmittance map over large filters will be given.

Abstract: The mechanism of Spontaneous Desorption Mass Spectrometry (SOMS) has been investigated through the use of extraction electrodes with circular aperture, in place of the more conventional grid system. High emission rates of contaminant and sample specific anions have been recorded from reference materials like CsI and phenylalanine. It is shown that the emission rate is controlled by the existence and the characteristics of the aperture edge such as sharpness or (and) rugosity. Geometrical shape and material composition of this well localized region also influence the emission rate and ion yields. Experimentally, the sample emitting zone has been determined in two ways: (1) from the variation of the emission yield of sample specific ions as a function of the deposit diameter and (2) from the lateral distribution of impacts of these ions after their flight path. Both experiments clearly show that this emitting zone (impact zone of the primaries) has a ring shape related to the circular aperture parameters. SIMION ion trajectory simulations and field strength calculations demonstrate that the primary ions are mostly emitted from the well defined edges (inner and outer) of the electrode. The emission rate is shown to decrease rapidly with time after the application of the extraction potential indicating both a degradation of the edge sharpness or microtips density and a decrease of adsorbates release.

Abstract: International audience; To improve the in situ monitoring of thin films at the Laboratoire des Matériaux Avancés, a broadband optical monitoring of the coated thin films was developed and installed in the biggest ion-beam sputtering machine in the world. Due to the configuration of the coating machine and the chamber strain under vacuum, a standard calibration procedure is impossible and a double-beam optical system is not suitable. A novel theoretical and practical solution to calibrate the measurements was found and is described in this paper. Some relevant results achieved thanks to this technique are discussed as well.

Abstract: The automatic control of the suspended mirrors is a major task in operating an interferometric gravitational wave antenna. To reach the extreme sensitivity required for this kind of detector, an accurate alignment and a stable locking of the interferometer on its working point are crucial. The solution of this problem is particularly complex in the case of a multistage pendulum, such as the suspension system for seismic isolation adopted in VIRGO. A precise knowledge of the suspension mechanical transfer functions (TFs) for different forces applied in the control servo-loops represents essential information to reach the goal. In this article, we describe the apparatus we developed to measure the VIRGO suspension TF and we report the results thus obtained on full-scale suspensions at the VIRGO site. Preliminary results for the implemented control system of the last suspension stage are also presented.

The document describes the facility in detail and demonstrates its physics capabilities. This document was submitted to the Fermilab Physics Advisory Committee in consideration for Stage I approval. Abstract: The idea of using a muon storage ring to produce a high-energy ({approx_equal} 50 GeV) neutrino beam for experiments was first discussed by Koshkarev in 1974. A detailed description of a muon storage ring for neutrino oscillation experiments was first produced by Neuffer in 1980. In his paper, Neuffer studied muon decay rings with E{sub {mu}} of 8, 4.5 and 1.5 GeV. With his 4.5 GeV ring design, he achieved a figure of merit of {approx_equal} 6 x 10{sup 9} useful neutrinos per 3 x 10{sup 13} protons on target. The facility we describe here ({nu}STORM) is essentially the same facility proposed in 1980 and would utilize a 3-4 GeV/c muon storage ring to study eV-scale oscillation physics and, in addition, could add significantly to our understanding of {nu}{sub e} and {nu}{sub {mu}} cross sections. In particular the facility can: (1) address the large {Delta}m{sup 2} oscillation regime and make a major contribution to the study of sterile neutrinos, (2) make precision {nu}{sub e} and {bar {nu}}{sub e} cross-section measurements, (3) provide a technology ({mu} decay ring) test demonstration and {mu} beam diagnostics test bed, and (4) provide a precisely understood {nu} beam for detector studies. The facility is the simplest implementation of the Neutrino Factory concept. In our case, 60 GeV/c protons are used to produce pions off a conventional solid target. The pions are collected with a focusing device (horn or lithium lens) and are then transported to, and injected into, a storage ring. The pions that decay in the first straight of the ring can yield a muon that is captured in the ring. The circulating muons then subsequently decay into electrons and neutrinos. We are starting with a storage ring design that is optimized for 3.8 GeV/c muon momentum. This momentum was selected to maximize the physics reach for both oscillation and the cross section physics. Abstract: Harmonic number jump acceleration of muon beams in scaling FFAG rings is studied. General considerations about harmonic number jump acceleration lead to the necessity of designing rings with dispersion suppressed insertions, and in which both μ+ and μ− can be circulated in the same direction. Design principles of such a scaling FFAG ring are described. Example of a 3 to 10 GeV lattice is given, and 4D acceleration tracking is done in it.

Abstract: We have tested a new kind of Fabry-Perot long-baseline optical resonator proposed to reduce the thermal noise sensitivity of gravitational wave interferometric detectors--the "mesa beam" cavity--whose flat top beam shape is achieved by means of an aspherical end mirror. We present the fundamental mode intensity pattern for this cavity and its distortion due to surface imperfections and tilt misalignments, and contrast the higher order mode patterns to the Gauss-Laguerre modes of a spherical mirror cavity. We discuss the effects of mirror tilts on cavity alignment and locking and present measurements of the mesa beam tilt sensitivity.

Abstract: A non-Gaussian, flat-top laser beam profile, also called Mesa Beam Profile, supported by non spherical mirrors known as Mexican Hat (MH) mirrors, has been proposed as a way to depress the mirror thermal noise and thus improve the sensitivity of future interferometric Gravitational Wave detectors, including Advanced LIGO [1]. Non-Gaussian beam configurations have never been tested before [2] hence the main motivation of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility of this new concept. A 7m rigid suspended Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity which can support a scaled version of a Mesa beam applicable to the LIGO interferometers has been developed. The FP cavity prototype is being designed to prove the feasibility of actual MH mirror profiles, determine whether a MH mirror cavity is capable of transforming an incoming Gaussian beam into a flat top beam profile, study the effects of unavoidable mirror imperfections on the resulting beam profile and gauge the difficulties associated with locking and maintaining the alignment of such an optical cavity. We present the design of the experimental apparatus and simulations comparing Gaussian and Mesa beams performed both with ideal and current (measured) mirror profiles. An overview of the technique used to manufacture this kind of mirror and initial results showing Mesa beam properties are presented.

Abstract: présentée par A. Remillieux; The coating deposition on large optical components (diameter 350 mm) has required the development of new metrology tools at 1064 nm. To give realistic values of the optical performances, the whole surface of the component needs to be scanned. Our scatterometer (commercial system) has been upgraded to support large and heavy samples. The other metrology tools are prototypes we have developed. We can mention the absorption (photothermal effect) and birefringence bench, a control interferometer equipped with an original stitching option, the optical profilometer (RMS roughness and small defect measurements). A detailed description of these metrology benches will be exposed. Their sensitivity, accuracy and capability to map the optical properties of substrates or mirrors will be discussed. We will describe the recent developments: the stitching option adapted to the Micromap profilometer to measure the RMS roughness on larger area (exploration of a new spatial frequency domain), the accurate bulk absorption calibration.
