After independence, the southern African country of Zambia was governed by the United National Independence Party (UNIP), which, from 1972, ruled in a “one party participatory democracy.” Although Zambia initially hoped to remain non-aligned, after 1972, the country embraced a socialist path to development and began to rely heavily on aid from the Eastern Bloc. Women had been key participants in the struggle for national independence and continued to play a role in the UNIP party. This article examines the political economy of aid transfers from state women’s organizations in Eastern Europe (in particular from Bulgaria) to the nascent Zambian women’s movement, with a specific focus on the bilateral aid sent to develop and support the UNIP Women’s League. Through exchange visits, educational scholarships, travel grants and specific technical and logistical support, the Eastern Bloc countries built state feminist capacity within Zambia and helped Zambian women find their political voices on the international stage during the United Nations Decade for Women (1975-1985). Après l’indépendance, la Zambie est gouverné par l’UNIP (United National Independence Party) qui met en place à partir de 1972 « une démocratie à parti unique ». Bien que non aligné au début, le pays choisit alors un développement socialiste et compte de plus en plus sur l’aide du bloc de l’Est. Éléments-clés du combat pour l’indépendance nationale, les femmes continuent à jouer un rôle dans le Parti. Cet article examine l’économie politique de l’aide apportée par les organisations officielles de femmes d’Europe de l’Est au jeune mouvement de femmes zambien, notamment pour développer et soutenir la UNIP Women’s League. Visites respectives, bourses d’études, aide au voyage, soutien technique et logistique spécifique : par ces moyens, les pays de l’Est contribuent à la construction d’un féminisme d’État en Zambie et aident les femmes zambiennes à s’affirmer politiquement au niveau international durant la décennie des Nations unies pour les femmes (1975-1985).

This paper follows the lives of a photograph, which captured an unlikely gesture amidst a scene of injury during the 2013 mass protests in Bulgaria. It tracks the image’s impacts by focusing on six different registers: the ethnographer, the photographer, the girl in the photograph, a blogger and participant in the protests, global image-sharing sites, and a Hollywood production. The writing strives toward an attunement with the affective force of the image and toward making visible some of the ways it manages to disrupt and reconfigure existing worlds, brighten atmospheres and lives, and create desire and anticipation for a world-in-common., Cet article suit les vies d’une photographie qui a capturé un geste improbable au milieu d’une scène de blessures pendant les manifestations de masse de 2013, en Bulgarie. Il suit les impacts de l’image en se concentrant sur six registres différents : l’ethnographe, le photographe, la fille sur la photographie, un blogueur et un participant aux manifestations, les sites mondiaux de partage d’images et une production hollywoodienne. L’auteur s’efforce de s’accorder avec la force affective de l’image et de rendre visible certaines façons dont elle parvient à perturber et à reconfigurer les mondes existants, à égayer les atmosphères et les vies, et à susciter le désir et l’anticipation d’un monde en commun.

Entre 1885 et 1948, plus d’une soixantaine de Frères des écoles chrétiennes, appartenant à « une congrégation originale » fondée par Jean-Baptiste de La Salle en 1680, congrégation laïque masculine de droit pontifical, consacrent tout leur temps à leurs trois écoles lasalliennes en Bulgarie, dont deux à Sofia et une à Roussé (Roustchouk). Le collège Saints Cyrille et Méthode (1919-1948) est dénommé d’abord, selon un devis de 1926, « Collège Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, à Sofia » du nom du fondateur des frères. L’excellente réputation de ces écoles attire les élèves qui forment « un ensemble très cosmopolite » et vivent en parfaite harmonie (Michel 2004 : 31). La langue française en est l’outil d’enseignement. La méthode simultanée contribue à la construction « d’une véritable communauté éducative », grâce au dévouement des frères. Between 1885 and 1948, more than sixty Brothers of the Christian schools, belonging to “an original congregation” founded by Jean-Baptiste de La Salle in 1680, a lay male congregation of pontifical right, devoted all their time to their three Lasallian schools in Bulgaria, including two in Sofia and one in Ruse (Roustchouk). The college Saints Cyril and Methodius (1919-1948) is first called, according to a 1926 estimate, “College Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, in Sofia” after the name of the founder of the Brothers. The excellent reputation of these schools attracts students who form “a very cosmopolitan whole” and live in perfect harmony. The French language is the teaching tool. The simultaneous method contributes to the construction of “a true educational community”, thanks to the dedication of the brothers.

Les Sonnets Interdits sont un cri de colère de la part de Lubomir Guentchev, resté interdit de publication dans son pays toute sa vie. Ces écrits mordants sont un témoignage exceptionnel sur l’oppression et l’humiliation subies au temps de la guerre froide en Bulgarie. Leur genèse en est un écho direct. This publication analyses the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic on the demography of Greece after its weakening by the 2008 crisis, by considering the evo-lution of the population, and its different components - natural movement and migra-tory movement. The developments are illuminated by comparisons with several Eu-ropean countries. International audience; Slavonic is one of the languages that was first written in the ninth century, or perhaps at the beginning of the tenth. The Moravian kingdom of Dukes Rastiz (846–70) and Svatopluk (870–94), within the framework of the missionary activities of Sts Constantine-Cyril and Methodius, is generally proposed as the context for this initiative. However, this proposition is based only on the hagiographic corpus which concerns those two saints and the value of these texts seems particularly weak. As a result, even if Slavic texts were circulating in Moravia, it is unlikely that they were the oldest steps in this linguistic innovation. It is therefore necessary to review the sources in order to contextualise the birth of the written Slavonic language; then new interpretations can be put forward to explain this novelty and its success.; Le slavon est l'une des langues dont la première écriture remonte au IXe siècle, ou peut-être au début du Xe siècle. Généralement, on propose comme cadre pour cette innovation le duché morave des ducs Rastiz (846-70) et Svatopluk (870-94), dans le cadre des activités missionnaires des saints Constantin-Cyril et Méthode. Pourtant, cette proposition ne se fonde que sur le corpus hagiographique qui concerne ces deux saints et la valeur de ces textes semble particulièrement faible. Par conséquent, même si des textes slaves circulaient en Moravie, il est peu probable qu'ils aient constitué les étapes les plus anciennes de cette innovation linguistique. Il est donc nécessaire de revoir les sources afin de contextualiser la naissance de la langue slave écrite ; de nouvelles interprétations peuvent alors être proposées pour expliquer cette nouveauté et son succès.

International audience; Kozarnika cave is a renowned prehistoric site in the Balkans. It contributes significantly to our understanding of the human past due to its rich assemblages associated with the Lower to Upper Palaeolithic periods. The cave was first mentioned in the prehistoric survey carried out before 1933. Years after, in 1996, the site was excavated systematically by Bulgarian-French researchers (Guadelli et al., 2005).Notably, various chronological dating methods have been employed alongside the excavation to unravel the timing of humans' occupation in Kozarnika. Radiocarbon dating was applied to unfold the timeframe for the Kozarnikian tradition uncovered in the Upper Palaeolithic sequence of the cave, and paleomagnetic dating assigned the Brunhes-Matuyama reversal to the layer beneath the Lower Palaeolithic assemblages with the age of 780 ka (Muttoni et al., 2017).This study presents our contribution of employing luminescence-dating methods (OSL, IRSL, pIRIR, VSL, IR-RF) to unravel the reliable timeframes for several geological units and archaeological assemblages. A vast body of techniques has been put together, enabling us to date sediment samples containing the assemblages attributed earlier to the Upper, Middle, and Lower Palaeolithic periods (Guadelli et al., 2005; Sirakov et al., 2010). Our results unravelled that the inhabitants of Kozarnika occupied that region from ca 30 to 600 ka, showing general accordance with the previous dating.

International audience; The OECD has recently launched an epochal reform of the international tax law framework originally established in the early days of the twentieth century. Through its two pillars, the change aims at smoothing the remaining anachronistic assumptions which have made this corpus's approach ineffective. Namely, it addresses the issue of companies’ trans-national reach to reduce the room that big corporations have to engage in base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS) to reduce their overall tax burden and gain an undue competitive advantage on less tentacular organisations. Against such a complex background, this paper deals with the need for Bulgaria, one the 130 countries and jurisdictions that accepted the OECD’s proposal, to rethink its domestic tax laws. Styling itself as a policy paper, the text analyses two possible policy alternatives: (i) simply propping up the flat corporate-tax rate from 10% to 15% and (ii) restructuring the corporate-tax regime on the American Tax Code’s model through higher rates, a detraction for asset depreciation, and other tweaks. The effect of these reforms is evaluated through an appositely ideated model with a neo-classical backbone and a Keynesian Tax-Feedback component. International audience; In March 1945, Pejo Peev Draganov, a former official with the Commissariat for Jewish Affairs (Komisarstvo po evrejskite vuprosi—KEV) in Bulgaria, appeared before Chamber 7 of the People’s Courts, an emergency court established in the fall of 1944 by the coalition of the predominantly Communist Patriotic Front for the purpose of bringing to justice the alleged perpetrators of anti-Jewish crimes in Bulgaria. As the head of the Skopje transit camp, where Macedonian Jews from Vardar, a Yugoslavian province occupied by Bulgaria during the war, were imprisoned before being deported to Poland, Draganov was accused of participating in Jewish persecutions. He left the courthouse a free man. Twenty-three years later, in 1968, Draganov once again appeared before a court of justice, specifically the Hesse District (RFA) Courthouse, in response to the lawsuit brought against the former minister plenipotentiary of the Reich in Sofia during the Second World War, Adolf-Heinz Beckerle, who had negotiated the deportation of Jews from the occupied territories with the Bulgarian authorities. This time, he testified as a witness for the prosecution. This arrangement was the result of a complex negotiation between the Prosecutor’s Office of Communist Bulgaria in Sofia and the West German prosecution. By taking as an entry point the career of this former defendant (in the sense of Howard Becker), the changes in his positioning on the chessboard of justice, and his movement within the space of East-West relations, the aim of this article is to question the production of post-war justice for war crimes in Europe from a transnational perspective, with a focus on its shifts over space and time. The research is based on an extensive examination of the archives of the trials held in 1944-1945 (in Bulgaria) and 1967-1968 (in the Federal Republic of Germany) regarding the judicial systems of these two states and their troubled collaboration during the Cold War.

Le tsar Samuel (987-1014) avait placé l’Église de Bulgarie sous l’autorité d’un patriarche qu’il avait lui-même désigné (probablement vers 996). Toutefois, après la défaite de la Bulgarie en 1018 et son annexion à l’Empire byzantin, Basile II réorganisa l’Église bulgare en un archevêché byzantin de Bulgarie, avec son centre à Ohrid. À partir de cette date et jusqu’en 1334, les archevêques successifs ont été nommés par les empereurs byzantins. Ce n’est qu’en 1767 que le siège d’Ohrid a été placé sous l’autorité directe du patriarche de Constantinople. Cependant, les privilèges de Basile II pour l’archidiocèse de Bulgarie n’évoquent qu’indirectement son autocéphalie, qui n’est mentionnée explicitement qu’au XIIe siècle dans les textes de Michel de Déabolis et de Nil Doxapatrès ainsi que dans la notice de Velbužd. Dans la correspondance des archevêques d’Ohrid ce statut n’est évoqué que dans les documents de Théophylacte Héphaistos et de Dèmètrios Chomatènos. L’autocéphalie ne laissa une empreinte sur la pratique juridique que sous Chomatènos, renforçant son autorité qui reposait sur sa compétence d’expert reconnu. Cette estime lui permettait d’agir comme un patriarche, pratique qui fut reprise à l’époque de l’archevêque Grégoire Ier. Tsar Samuel (987-1014) placed the Church of Bulgaria under the authority of a patriarch whom he himself had designated (probably around 996). However, after the defeat of Bulgaria in 1018 and its annexation to the Byzantine Empire, Basil II reorganized the Bulgarian Church into a Byzantine Archbishopric of Bulgaria, with Ohrid as its center. From this date until 1334, the successive archbishops were appointed by the Byzantine emperors. It was not until 1767 that the see of Ohrid was placed under the direct authority of the Patriarch of Constantinople. However, the privileges of Basil II for the archdiocese of Bulgaria evoke only indirectly its autocephaly, which is mentioned explicitly only in the 12th century in the texts of Michael of Deabolis and Neilos Doxapatres and in the notice of Velbužd. In the correspondence of the archbishops of Ohrid this status appears only in the documents of Theophylactus Hephaistos and Demetrios Chomatenos. The latter and his successors relied on the pseudo-theory that identified Ohrid with Justiniana Prima. Autocephaly left an imprint on legal practice only under Chomatenos, reinforcing his authority, which was based on his status of recognized expertise. This esteem allowed him to act as a patriarch, a practice that was repeated at the time of Archbishop Gregory I.

Une attention spéciale est accordée au prétendu synode de Preslav de 893 et aux événements de l’année 927. This chapter analyzes the tendencies towards ecclesiastical independence in Bulgaria from the end of the 9th century (arrival of the disciples of Method, the Apostle of the Slavs) to the recognition of autocephaly in 1235 under Patriarch Germain II of Constantinople. Special attention is given to the so-called Preslav synod of 893 and the events of 927.

Alors que des élections législatives se profilent au printemps 2021, le sauvetage des Juifs, récit historique valorisé en Bulgarie, demeure une question complexe. Un miracle, une exception en Europe ? Depuis plusieurs décennies, le nom de la Bulgarie est associé à un récit enchanteur, celui du sauvetage de la quasi-intégralité de sa communauté juive, environ 48 000 Juifs, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En août 1944, alors que l'Armée rouge s'approche de la frontière bulgare, la philosophe Hannah Arendt écrit : « Pas un seul Juif n'avait été déporté, aucun n'était mort de cause autre que naturelle. »Et d'ajouter : « Personne, autant que je sache, n'a tenté d'expliquer le comportement du peuple bulgare qui est unique dans cette ceinture de populations mixtes. » Ces dernières années, pourtant, des voix de descendants de rescapés de la Shoah, de responsables de musée et d'historiens se sont élevées aux États-Unis, en Israël et en Europe pour inviter l'État bulgare à entreprendre une relecture critique de son histoire.

La Bulgarie, alliée du Reich durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, tire fierté d’avoir « sauvé » ses Juifs... Oui, mais les Juifs des territoires occupés par l’armée bulgare, en Macédoine du Vardar, dans la région de Pirot en Serbie et en Thrace occidentale, eux, ont été systématiquement déportés. Le site de Petko Karavelovo, en Bulgarie, est le terrain d’une étude architecturale exhaustive depuis 2017. Cette étude applique une méthodologie déjà éprouvée sur d’autres sites du monde égéo-balkanique. L’objectif est d’éclairer les techniques de construction utilisées au cours du Chalcolithique (4900-4300 avant notre ère) par les bâtisseurs en étudiant le bois de construction et la terre à bâtir. Il devient ainsi possible de noter les éléments de continuité et les innovations dans l’architecture. À Petko Karavelovo, les matériaux employés ainsi que les techniques d’assemblage et de fondation sont restés les mêmes au cours du Chalcolithique, indices d’une transmission des savoir-faire et de l’existence d’une même tradition technique. En revanche, les modes d’agencement de la terre à bâtir et du bois de construction évoluent et reflètent les choix communautaires, voire personnels. Since 2017, the site of Petko Karavelovo in Bulgaria is the subject of an exhaustive architectural study. This study applies a well-proven methodology tested on other sites in the Aegean and Balkan world. The objective is to reconstruct the technics used by builders during the chalcolithic period (4900-4300 BCE) through the study of wood and earth constructions. It is thus possible to show elements of continuity as well as architectural innovation. At Petko Karavelovo, materials used in constructions as well as wood joining and foundation techniques have remained unchanged during the Chalcolithic period, suggesting the transmission of savoir-faire and technics. However, specific ways by which earth and wood are used in constructions evolve and may be a reflection of communities or individual choices.

International audience; As a manifesto of triumph over iconoclasm (843), the Synodikon of Orthodoxy provides a valuable insight into the study of the Orthodox doctrine through the centuries. The present work considers the Synodikon as a living text and as an object and a field of memory contests, invested in equal measure by the ecclesiastical authority and the monarchical power. The first part questions the relationship between various textual traditions and between text and ritual, the stakes of the liturgical commemoration, as well as the ways in which “right fait” and “sin” are periodically recast and employed as political arguments within the Neo-Hellenic, South Slavic and Muscovite worlds. The second part of the book retraces the history of the only known Romanian version of the Synodikon (Triôdion, Buzău, 1700) and analyses the political factors that shaped the liturgical apparatus in Romanian language. Introduced into the cult to support the anti-Catholic and anti-Calvinist policy promoted by the Wallachian prince Constantin Brâncoveanu (1688-1714) and by Patriarch Dositheos II of Jerusalem (1669-1707), the Synodikon came out of use when the secular power could no longer support the ecclesiastical authorities’ initiatives. Although its memory lives on, the text never regained its place in the liturgy. The volume also includes critical editions of the Romanian texts of the Synodikon of Orthodoxy and of the Canon composed by the Ecumenical Patriarch Methodius I, a prosopographic dictionary, and the reproduction of the Slavic prototype of the Romanian Synodikon (Triôdion, Lviv, 1664).; Manifeste de la victoire contre l’iconoclasme (843), le Synodikon de l’Orthodoxie constitue un observatoire privilégié pour saisir la dynamique de la doctrine orthodoxe au fil des siècles. La deuxième partie du livre retrace l’histoire de la seule version roumaine connue du Synodikon (Triôdion, Buzău, 1700) et analyse les conditionnements politiques qui ont influé sur la construction du corpus et du dispositif liturgique en langue roumaine. Introduit dans le culte pour appuyer la politique anticatholique et anti-calviniste promue par le prince valaque Constantin Brâncoveanu (1688-1714) et par le patriarche Dosithéos II de Jérusalem (1669-1707), le Synodikon sort de l’usage lorsque le bras séculier n’arrive plus à soutenir les initiatives des autorités ecclésiastiques. Si sa mémoire perdure, le texte ne regagnera jamais sa place dans la liturgie. Le volume comprend aussi les éditions critiques des textes roumains du Synodikon de l’Orthodoxie et du Canon composé par le patriarche œcuménique Méthode Ier, un dictionnaire prosopographique et la reproduction du prototype slave du Synodikon roumain (Triôdion, Lviv, 1664).

L’article propose d’identifier les significations les plus importantes des gestes du gouverneur oriental selon une série de sources bulgares du haut Moyen Age et surtout selon la Lettre du Patriarche Photius adressée au prince Boris Michael. La recherche est centrée sur les gestes que le roi ne doit surtout pas faire afin de conserver son autorité divine.

Kozarnika Cave (north-western Bulgaria) delivered a long archaeological sequence that covers almost the entire Pleistocene. Lower levels dated by faunal associations between the second half of the Early Pleistocene (between the MNQ 18 and MNQ 19) and the first half of the Middle Pleistocene (MNQ 20-21) yielded some assemblages with non-Acheulean core-and-flake (and not pebble-core) industries. Middle Palaeolithic levels of Balkan Levallois-Mousterian with leaf points date of OIS 6-3 pro parte. The Upper Palaeolithic sequence is dated by 14C AMS between about 52.5 ka calBP and about 13.6 ka calBP. This long monotonous archaeological sequence (about 39 ka), begins in the vestibule of the cave (sectors I and II) with an Initial Upper Palaeolithic lamellar type industry with marginally backed bladelets which has no Aurignacian elements – the Early Kozarnikian – a possible precursor of the local tradition related to a technocomplex of lamellar industries containing backed pieces in overlaying levels. This absence of Aurignacian elements is also confirmed in the bone industry found in sectors I and II. On the other hand, the recent excavations in sector III have provided us all the data to prove that at least one Aurignacian level is intercalated in the Kozarnikian sequence. Because of successive Palaeolithic sequences in Kozarnika Cave and its geographical position, this site is a milestone for the understanding of the different phases of the earliest colonization and migrations to Europe., La grotte de Kozarnika (nord-ouest de la Bulgarie) a livré une longue séquence archéologique qui couvre la quasi-totalité du Pléistocène. Les niveaux inférieurs datés par des associations fauniques entre la seconde moitié du Pléistocène inférieur (entre le MNQ 18 et le MNQ 19) et la première moitié du Pléistocène moyen (MNQ 20-21) ont livré quelques assemblages non acheuléen à nuclei et éclats (sans pebble-cores). Les niveaux Paléolithique moyen levallois-Moustérien à pointes foliacées bifaces datent des OIS 6 à 3 pro parte. La séquence du Paléolithique supérieur est datée par 14C AMS entre environ 52,5 ka calBP et environ 13,6 ka calBP. Cette longue séquence archéologique monotone (environ 39 ka), débute dans le vestibule de la grotte (secteurs I et II) par une industrie lamellaire du Paléolithique supérieur initial à lamelles à dos marginal qui ne comporte aucun élément aurignacien – le Kozarnikien initial – un possible précurseur de la tradition locale de technocomplexes d'industries lamellaires contenant des pièces à dos dans les niveaux supérieurs. Cette absence d'éléments aurignaciens se confirme également dans l'industrie osseuse des secteurs I et II. En revanche, les fouilles récentes du secteur III nous ont fourni toutes les données pour prouver qu'au moins un niveau aurignacien est intercalé dans la séquence kozarnikienne. En raison des séquences paléolithiques successives de la grotte de Kozarnika et de sa position géographique, ce site est un jalon important pour la compréhension des différentes phases de colonisations et de migrations vers l'Europe.
