This paper examines the status of the Latin demonstrative ille and the intensifier ipse, which are the sources of definite articles in modern Romance languages. My analysis is based on the text of the Itinerarium Egeriae from the end of the fourth century AD. Using the approach of cognitive linguistics, I suggest how the articloid could be defined and how it could be distinguished semantically from its source element. I argue that both ille and ipse are used as articloids in the text. However, the original demonstrative meaning of ille and the original intensifying meaning of ipse are also attested, and in certain cases; though redundant, their use can be caused by the specific stylistics of the text. Furthermore, ipse has developed an additional meaning that establishes identity through similarity, and which might have led the path to its further grammaticalization. Therefore, both ille and ipse have a spectrum of interrelated meanings that range from those attested in Classical Latin to grammatical usage as articloids. However, as definiteness markers, their usage is not extended into contexts reserved for definite articles in languages with fully grammaticalized definiteness markers and hence its use as an articloid in the Latin of the fourth century AD could have been typologically equivalent to that of the articloid in the Baltic languages. Baltų kalbų veiksmažodžiai, liet. 'kláusti', 'klausýti', latv. 'klàust' ir 'klàusît / klaũsît' pasižymi įdomiais morfologiniais ir akcentologiniais požymiais. Ilgą laiką tai domino kalbininkus, kaip rodo daugybė ankstesnių tyrimų, pradedant Schulze (1904). Nepaisant keleto iki šiol pateiktų pasiūlymų, tyrėjai dar nesutarė dėl istorinės 'kláusti' akūtinio kirčiavimo interpretacijos ar dėl veiksmažodžio 'kláusti' santykio su giminingais žodžiais ne tik baltų slavų, bet ir indoeuropiečių kalbose. Šiame straipsnyje bus dar kartą išnagrinėti visi autorei prieinami svarbūs duomenys ir hipotezės bei ieškoma labiau tikėtino istorinio aiškinimo. The Baltic verbs, Lith. 'kláusti' ‘to ask questions’, 'klausýti' ‘to listen’, Latv. 'klàust' ‘to ask questions’ and 'klàusît / klaũsît' ‘to listen’ exhibit intriguing morphological and accentological distributions. For a long time, this has interested linguists as shown by numerous previous studies starting with Schulze (1904). Despite several proposals put forward so far, researchers have not yet agreed on a historical interpretation of the acute tone of Lith. 'kláusti', or on the historical relationship of 'kláusti' to its cognates not only in Balto-Slavic but also in Indo-European languages. In this paper, all the relevant data and hypotheses available to the current author will be examined again, and a more probable historical interpretation will be sought. Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos kuršininkų kalbos būdvardžių gramatinės ypatybės, kurios išryškėjo XX a. pabaigos pateikėjų kalboje, dėl to ankstesnių tyrėjų nebuvo pastebėtos. Remiantis paskutiniosios kalbėtojų kartos pavyzdžiais, surinktais daugiausia iš rišlia kalba dokumentuotų įrašų, akcentuojamas būdvardžių gramatinės sistemos irimo požymis ‒ giminės, skaičiaus ir linksnio kategorijų ikoniškumo praradimas. Galūnių redukcija, ankstesniųjų autorių pastebėta kaip fonologinis reiškinys, čia nagrinėjama ne tik iš fonologinės, bet ir iš morfosintaksinės pozicijos. Nustatyta, kad padažnėję būdvardžių nederinimo su valdikliu atvejai susiję su predikatine būdvardžių funkcija. Baltų kalboms nebūdingos nederinamos ir neikoniškos formos laikytinos vokiečių kalbos gramatikos įtaka, kuri sustiprėjo per mokyklas su dėstomąja vokiečių kalba. The New Curonian (Kursenieki) language of the Curonian Spit, formed as a Baltic geolect in the 15th–17th centuries from the dialects of the colonists who came from Courland, is already considered dead but scientific research and its results are important for Baltic studies. They provide data on the substrate of the Old Curonian language in the dialects of Courland, help to arrange the regularities of the evolution of these dialects in chronological order, and furnish a lot of material on issues of language interaction and the process of language decline. The article introduces the hitherto unexplored changes in the grammatical system of the adjective of the Kursenieki language, which took place during the last century. The research uses audio recordings of fieldwork from 1961 to 2011; the data is analysed and compared with data recorded in written sources from the second half of the 19th century. The methods of comparative morphonology and partially functional grammar aim to establish whether changes in the grammatical system of the adjective are a result of the internal evolution of the Kursenieki language or a result of language interaction. The Baltic languages are inflectional, and the strongly progressive reduction of vowels in final syllables in the Kursenieki geolect affected primarily the endings of words, as a result of which their iconicity in the inflectional system has greatly faded. After examining the material of several generations of informants the following became clear: 1. The grammatical categories of gender, number and case of the adjective in the Kursenieki language maintained a stable system until the Bismarck school reform, i.e. until the introduction of German as the language of instruction and the Germanization of all areas of social life. In the second half of the 19th century, the material of the so-called Wenker phrases testifies not only to the still well-preserved endings of the Kursenieki language but also to the semantically and formally justified grammatical agreement of adjectives to the agreement controller. 2. In the language of the last generation of the speakers of the Kursenieki language, the gender, number and case form of adjectives often do not agree with the agreement controller. This tendency is most evident when the adjective performs the function of a predicate. In the speech of some informants, such forms make up almost half of the cases of the usage of predicate adjectives. 3. The far-advanced reduction of endings is a favourable medium for the penetrating influence of German grammar: in compound predicates, the parts of speech that perform the function of the agreement target lose their iconicity and syntactic semantics is controlled by other means (word order, prepositional constructions). This tendency is most prevalent in compound predicative constructions with 'būt/tapt' + adj. (+ nom.) and 'būt' + adv. And vice versa: the influence of German grammar, especially syntax, accelerated the decline of the functions of the inflections of the Kursenieki language and their even faster reduction. 4. The influence of German grammar on the system of the adjective and adjectival adverbs manifests itself in three ways: 1) the generalized use of a stem without inflection indicators in masculine gender N. pl. and feminine gender N. sg.; 2) a systematic reduction of adverbial forms of adjectival origin; 3) generalized masculine gender even where it does not fit semantically (when it is easily seen from the context that the subject is of feminine gender). 5. Since in all the three cases mentioned partially iconic forms are also used parallelly, the above-mentioned changes in the grammar of the Kursenieki language can be considered relatively recent and are typical of the 20th-century generation of speakers who attended German schools and lived under conditions of intense bilingualism. Straipsnio tyrimo objektas – dabartinių baltų kalbų nosiniai sonantai: lūpiniai (lie. /m/, /mj / ir la. /m/), dantiniai (lie. /n/, /nj / ir la. /n/) bei palatalinis la. /ɲ/, taip pat abiejų kalbų fonemos /n/ gomurinis alofonas [ŋ], ištartas pozicijoje [–k#/–g#]. Straipsnyje lyginamos keturios akustinės lietuvių ir latvių nosinių sonantų ypatybės: 1) pirmoji nosinė formantė (N1); 2) pirmosios nosinės formantės dažnių juosta (B1); 3) antiformantės (Z1) dažnių diapazonas; 4) F2 lokusai. Tiriamąją medžiagą įskaitė 3 gimtakalbiai lietuviai ir 3 gimtakalbiai latviai vyrai (20–40 m. amžiaus). Tyrimas atliktas programa Praat, gauti duomenys apdoroti programomis Microsoft Excel ir SPSS. Lietuvių ir latvių kalbų sonantai analizuoti prevokalinėje CVC pozicijoje atsižvelgiant į du kriterijus: 1) artikuliacijos vietą; 2) palatalizaciją (nepalatalizuotas : palatalizuotas : palatalinis nosinis sonantas). Tyrimo metu nustatyta, kad minėtos akustinės nosinių sonantų ypatybės dabartinių baltų kalbų garsyne yra skirtingo diferencinio svorio: 1) pirmosios nosinės formantės (N1) duomenys atskiria gomurinius alofonus [ŋ, ŋj ] nuo negomurinių nosinių sonantų [m, mj , n, nj ]; 2) pagal pirmosios nosinės formantės juostos pločio (B1) duomenis statistiškai reikšmingai skiriasi lietuvių kalbos palatalizuoti ir dantiniai nosiniai sonantai nuo nepalatalizuotų lūpinių ir gomurinių sonantų, taip pat latvių kalbos lūpiniai ir dantiniai sonantai nuo palatalinių ir gomurinių nosinių sonantų; 3) pagal antiformančių (Z1) dažnius galima diferencijuoti lietuvių kalbos lūpinius negomurinius sonantus [m, mʲ, n, nʲ] nuo atitinkamų gomurinių sonantų [ŋ, ŋʲ]; latvių kalboje pagal antiformantę galima atskirti skirtingos artikuliacijos nosinius sonantus: lūpinis [m]

Straipsniu siekiama aptarti subjunktyvo (taip pat vadinamo optatyvu ar kondicionaliu) diachroniją rytų baltų – lietuvių ir latvių – kalbose. Straipsnyje parodoma, kaip abiejų kalbų – ypač senosios lietuvių, senosios latvių bei dabartinės lietuvių kalbos tarmių – subjunktyvo paradigmos atspindi pirmines konstrukcijas, paremtas infinitinėmis veiksmažodžio formomis: supynu (pvz., lie. dúo-tų, la. duô-tu, plg. pr. dā-tun, s. sl. da-tŭ ) ir bendratimi (pvz., lie. dúo-ti, la. duô-t, plg. pr. dā-t, s. sl. da-ti). Sistemiškai palyginus baltų ir slavų kalbų duomenis, matyti, kad dauguma lietuvių ir latvių subjunktyvo paradigmos formų yra kilusios iš dviejų rytų baltų prokalbės konstrukcijų, kurių abi susidėjo iš atitinkamo veiksmažodžio supyno ir jungties (liet. būti, la. bût) formų: (a) supynas susiliejo su jungties esamojo laiko formomis, (b) supynas susiliejo su jungties būtojo laiko formomis. Viena reikšminga išimtis – lietuvių kalbos heteroklitinė 1 sg. forma, kilusi iš tos pačios konstrukcijos kaip ir latvių debityvas. Likusi straipsnio dalis skiriama antrinių subjunktyvo formų atsiradimui dabartinėse lietuvių tarmėse (ypač aukštaičių šnektoms pietų ir rytų Lietuvoje). Nagrinėjama, kiek šios formos atspindi reguliarių diachroninių procesų – (proporcinės) analogijos ir garsų kitimo – sąveiką. Pristatomos išvados yra svarbios bendrai abiejų rytų baltų kalbų morfologijos ir fonologijos priešistorei. This article intends to shed light on the diachrony of the subjunctive mood (also labelled optative or conditional) in the two East Baltic languages Latvian and Lithuanian. It is demonstrated to what extent the subjunctive paradigms in both languages – especially Old Lithuanian, Old Latvian and modern Lithuanian dialects – reflect original source constructions based on infinitival verb-formations, namely the supine (e. g. Lith dúo-tų, Latv duô-tu, cf. Old Prussian dā-tun, OCS da-tŭ) and the infinitive (e. g. Lith dúo-ti, Latv duô-t, cf. OPr dā-t, OCS da-ti). The systematic comparison of Baltic and Slavic evidence indicates that most forms of the Lithuanian and Latvian subjunctive paradigms go back to two Proto-East-Baltic source constructions that both contained the supine of a respective verb and forms of the copula (Lith būti, Latv bût): (a) the supine joined with present tense forms of the copula, and (b) the supine joined with past tense forms of the copula. One remarkable exception is a heteroclitic 1sg. form in Lithuanian that is shown to share a common source construction with the Latvian debitive. The remainder of the article is dedicated to the emergence of secondary subjunctive forms in modern Lithuanian dialects (especially Aukštaitian dialects in the South and East of Lithuania). It is discussed to what extent these forms reflect the interplay of regular diachronic processes, namely (proportional) analogy and sound change. The findings presented in the discussion have interesting implications for the common morphological and phonological prehistory of both East Baltic languages. Different kinds of reconstruction are objects of investigation in this paper which mainly focuses on fixed combinations of words, phraseological units, set phrases and components of texts. Aprašyti prūsų, lietuvių ir latvių mitologiją viename veikale yra nemenkas iššūkis, nes medžiagos yra labai daug, ji įvairių laikotarpių ir iš labai skirtingų šaltinių (istoriniai veikalai, tautosaka, lingvistinė medžiaga), o kur dar baltų kalbų ir kultūrų skirtumai. Autoriai pasirinko enciklopedinį kelią (įvade pabrėžiama, kad „knyga siekia būti baltų tautų mitologijos enciklopedija“) ir bando aprėpti šią medžiagą per atskiriems dievams skirtus straipsnius, pateikiamus abėcėline tvarka. Knygoje yra net 270 originalių enciklopedinių straipsnių. Sklaidant šią knygą žavi drąsus pasiryžimas sujungti lietuvių ir latvių mitologinę medžiagą. Tai itin retas dalykas, nes lietuvių ir latvių mitologai paprastai linkę apsiriboti arba lietuvišku-prūsišku, arba latvišku kontekstu. Iš lietuvių turbūt vienintelė mokslininkė, bandžiusi sintetiškai aprašyti bendrą baltų religinę sistemą, yra Marija Gimbutienė; neatsitiktinai knygoje ji ne sykį minima. Visgi autoriams svarbesni yra Viačeslavo V. Ivanovo ir Vladimiro Toporovo darbai, kuriuose baltų mitologija išvedama į platesnius vandenis, jungiant ją su slavų, germanų, senovės indų tradicijomis. Václavas Blažekas šiuos du mokslininkus ir Jaaną Puhvelą bei Ilją Lemeškiną pavadina savo vedliais į baltų mitologiją iš indoeuropietiškosios tyrimų perspektyvos. Turbūt nereikėtų stebėtis, kad lingvistų parašyto mitologijos žodyno pagrindas yra ne dievai, o dievavardžiai – jie sudaro didžiumos straipsnių antraštes. [...]

The aim of the present paper, offered to Prof. Nikolai Kazansky as a token of respect and homage for his contribution to Indo-European linguistics, is to explore the etymology of an Old Lithuanian prepositional locution uß oßcʒių ‘on the back side’ used twice by Jonas Bretkūnas in two different passages of his translation of the Bible (1590). It can be argued that the genitive plural oßcʒių reflects a feminine noun *oščios ‘back side’ limited to the plural (plurale tantum) and is based on a Baltic feminine noun *āź-tjā-. Historically, *āź-tjā- seems to reflect the combination of a lengthened allomorph of the preposition až(u)- ‘behind’ and a suffix *-tio- which enjoyed a certain productivity in the prehistory of the Baltic languages. The long vowel of the preposition *āź- is striking, however, and remains completely unparalleled in Lithuanian, where až(u)- is only attested with a short vowel, or with lengthening of the second vowel ažúo-, but not with a first long vowel *āž-, which in turn appears in some Latvian dialects (āz). Taken at face value, the alternation between *ăź- and *āź- preserved in the prepositional locution uß oßcʒių recalls that between *pă- (Lithuanian pa-) and *pā- (Lithuanian pó-), but the difficulty is how to clarify the function of its initial lengthening in contrast with the more common alternation *aź(u)-/ ​aźúo-. Straipsnyje siekiama nustatyti latvių kalbos reliacinių prieveiksmių blakus ir līdzās semantikos skirtumus bei aprašyti tekstyne rastus minėtųjų leksemų atitikmenis lietuvių kalboje. Duomenys tyrimui surinkti iš Lietuvių–latvių ir latvių–lietuvių kalbų lygiagrečiojo tekstyno (LILA), rankiniu būdu anotuoti pagal sintaksinius ir semantinius kriterijus bei analizuoti kiekybiškai. Nors blakus ir līdzās latvių kalbos žodynuose apibrėžiami labai panašiai, mūsų rezultatai atskleidžia jų semantinius ir sintaksinius ypatumus, išryškina bendrybes bei parodo, kuriais atvejais pasirenkama viena ar kita leksema. Pastebėtuosius semantinius skirtumus pagrindžia ir tekstyne rasti tiriamųjų reliacinių prieveiksmių atitikmenys lietuvių kalboje. This article aims to clarify the difference in usage of the Latvian proximity lexemes blakus and līdzās and to identify their translation equivalents in Lithuanian. The data have been collected from the Lithuanian-Latvian and Latvian-Lithuanian parallel corpus, manually annotated for various syntactic and semantic variables, and analyzed quantitatively. Although Latvian relational adverbs blakus and līdzās are defined very similarly in Latvian dictionaries, our results reveal their syntactic and semantic peculiarities in more detail and outline the criteria that sanction the choice of these relational adverbs. Finally, the translation of Latvian proximity terms into Lithuanian is described emphasizing the main differences of proximal terms in both languages. This discourse puts forward arguments for the complete validity of Pedersen’s Law, also called ‘Lex RUKI’, in Proto-Baltic (or an early Baltic dialect) in all positions. On New Manually Aligned and Tagged Bilingual Parallel Corpora and Their ApplicationsThis article is devoted to the manually aligned and tagged bilingual parallel CLARIN-PL-BIZ corpora of the Baltic and Slavic languages which are currently being developed. The study discusses the essential features of these corpora that make their applications go far beyond typical corpus analysis. Applications of these corpora include the design of cross-language models for the development of machine translation and artificial intelligence. The article also draws attention to the high potential of these resources as a model training base for testing natural language processing tools. O nowych ręcznie zrównoleglonych i znakowanych dwujęzycznych korpusach równoległych oraz ich zastosowaniachW artykule autor opisuje obecnie powstające ręcznie zrównoleglone i znakowane dwujęzyczne korpusy równoległe CLARIN-PL-BIZ języków bałtyckich i słowiańskich. Omawia wyróżniające cechy tych korpusów, które sprawią, że zastosowania tych korpusów znacznie wykroczą poza typowe analizy korpusowe. Wśród zastosowań tych korpusów autor wymienia definiowanie modeli międzyjęzykowych na rzecz rozwoju przekładu maszynowego i rozwoju sztucznej inteligencji. Zwraca również uwagę na wysoki potencjał tych zasobów jako wzorcowej bazy treningowej do testowania narzędzi przetwarzania języka naturalnego.

Žodis laume / lauma baltų kalbose nuo pat pradžių reiškė tam tikrą antgamtinę būtybę (liet. laumė, lat. laume / lauma, pr. *laume). Kiek galima spręsti iš gausios lietuvių folklorinės medžiagos, Lietuva turėjo būti tiek laumės tradicijos šerdis, tiek reliktinė jos teritorija, taigi laumės kaip antgamtinės būtybės įvaizdis turėtų būti laikomas seniausiuoju šių tikėjimų sluoksniu. Laumės juose apibūdinamos kaip ambivalentiškos gamtos dvasios, kurios tam tikrais atvejais gali kelti grėsmę žmonėms. Latvių folklore lauma taip interpretuojama labai retai. Latvija, esanti tradicijos gyvavimo teritorijos pakraštyje, pasižymi inovacijomis, todėl čia ši antgamtinė būtybė patyrė esminių pokyčių. Dar iki raganų persekiojimo laikotarpio (nuo XVI iki XVIII a.) ji buvo sužmoginta ir įterpta į tikėjimų sistemą, susijusią su raganavimu. Straipsnyje aptariama visa latvių lauma tradicija, siekiant išsiaiškinti jos vietą istorinėje latvių tikėjimų apie raganavimą tipologijoje. Pirmojoje dalyje trumpai apžvelgiami trys chronologiniai latvių su raganavimu susijusių tikėjimų raidos etapai (nakties, pieno ir diabolizuotos raganos), apibūdinami folkloriniai su lauma siejami šaltiniai ir ankstesni tyrimai šia tema. Antrojoje dalyje nagrinėjamas su lauma siejamų tekstų korpusas ir bandoma nustatyti, kurie iš istorinės raganų tipologijos etapų atsispindi XIX–XX a. su lauma siejamame folklore. Trečiojoje dalyje pateikiama hipotezė, kad lauma iš antgamtinės būtybės pavirto į pieno raganą. Tekstų analizė rodo, kad lauma priklauso vienai iš regioninių Latvijos raganų tradicijų, kurią sudaro palyginti negausūs XIX–XX a. užrašymai: apie 100 sakmių, tikėjimų ir liaudies dainų. Šioje medžiagoje laumas apibūdinamos kaip tipiškos pieno raganos (t. y. raganos, atimančios pieną), kurias palyginti menkai paveikė raganų persekiojimo laikotarpiu XVI– XVIII a. vykę diabolizacijos procesai. Nors žodis lauma, kaip ir ragana, XVII–XVIII a. žodynuose, religinėse giesmėse ir pamoksluose vartojamas raganai apibūdinti, vis dėlto šio laikotarpio mokslininkų demonologų idėjos liaudies tradicijoje taip ir neprigijo. Gretinant su pakitusia latvių ragana tradicija ir atsižvelgiant į lauma santykį su visiškai kitokia antgamtine būtybe – gamtos dvasia laume iš lietuvių tikėjimų, – galima spėti, kad vakarinėje Latvijos dalyje (daugiausia Kuržemėje) kadaise gyvavo pati seniausia lauma tradicijos forma, bet jau XVII a. ji transformavosi į pieno raganą. Vis dėlto atrodytų, kad patys seniausieji tikėjimai apie lauma galutinai neišnyko. Žodžiui lauma įgavus „raganos“ reikšmę, kadaise šiuo žodžiu vadintos mitinės būtybės buvo pervadintos į svētmeitas. Su pastarosiomis susiję tikėjimai Kuržemėje išliko iki XX a. vidurio, o kartais pasitaiko ir dabar. Svētmeitas apibūdinamos labai panašiai kaip lietuvių tikėjimų laumės ir latvių senosios tradicijos raganas, apie kurias tikėjimų dar yra užsilikę šiaurės rytų Latvijoje. Labai panašūs pokyčiai ištiko ragana tradiciją, kuri būdingesnė rytinei ir vidurinei Latvijos dalims (Vidžemei, Latgalai ir Žiemgalai). Raganas tradicijos kaita yra išsamiau dokumentuota, nes senieji tikėjimai nakties raganomis (arba raganas kaip antgamtinėmis būtybėmis, priešingai nei antgamtinių galių turinčiais žmonėmis) šiaurės rytinėje Latvijoje išliko užsikonservavę iki pat XX a. vidurio. Ankstesnę nakties raganų gyvavimo sritį nurodo vietovardžių su žodžiu ragana paplitimas: tai rytinių baltų – latgalių, sėlių ir žiemgalių – gyventos teritorijos. O tokių vietovardžių nebuvimas liudija, kad ragana nebuvo žinoma Baltijos finams (lyviams) ir vakarų baltams (kuršiams). Tiesa, reikia pažymėti, kad kuršiai turėjo savą, labai panašią į lauma / laume tradiciją. In Baltic languages, the word laume/lauma initially referred to a certain supernatural being (Lithuanian laumė, Latvian lauma/laume, Prussian *laume). The analysis of written sources and folklore related to this supernatural being allows for the conclusion that Lithuania is both the core and the relic area of the laumė tradition, where the original beliefs have been retained; while Latvia, located at the periphery of the tradition territory, is the innovation area, where the perception of this supernatural being was substantially transformed. It was humanised and incorporated in the witchcraft belief system prior to or during the period of witch persecution (the 16th to 18th centuries). The article attempts to analyse the corpus of lauma tradition in order to clarify its position in the historical typology of Latvian witchcraft beliefs. The first chapter briefly describes three chronological stages of the development of Latvian witchcraft beliefs (night, dairy, and diabolic witches), characterises the lauma folklore sources and previous research. The second chapter analyses the lauma text corpus and attempts to find out which stages of the historical typology of witchcraft beliefs are reflected in the lauma folklore of the 19th–20th centuries. In the third chapter the hypothesis about the transformation of laumas from supernatural beings to dairy witches is argued.

Remdamasis Iljos Lemeškino knyga Lithuanica aliter (2019), autorius paaiškina, kas yra visuminė filologija, plėtojama šiuolaikinio Prahos lingvistų būrelio, bei parodo, kaip ji taikoma baltistikos tyrimuose. Nors ir apsiribojama XVI a. ir XVII a. pirmąja puse, jos pritaikymas visada vykdomas sistemiškai visos Europos kultūros kontekste atsižvelgiant ne tik į „baltiškųjų“ (genetine prasme) kalbų tekstynus. Reporting on, and reviewing thoroughly Il’ja Lemeškin’s book Lithuanica aliter (Lemeškin 2019), the author explains the programme of encompassing philology as it has been elaborated in the contemporary Prague Linguistic Circle, and outlines how encompassing philology should approach – naturally, within a European cultural-historical framework, even if restricted to the 16th and the first half of the 17th century – the whole material basis of Baltic linguistics, which on its turn should never be restricted to the genetically Baltic languages only.

Tradiciškai baltų kalbų ‘dangaus’ pavadinimas (lie. dangùs, pr. dangus) aiškinamas kaip veiksmažodžio deñgti derivatas, remiantis prielaida, kad dangus buvo suvokiamas kaip tam tikras išlenktas paviršius, dengiantis pasaulį. Tačiau šis tradicinis požiūris iki šiol palieka du klausimus atvirus: (1) kaip paaiškinti žodžio dangus darybą, panašesnę į būdvardžio negu į daiktavardžio; (2) kaip rekonstruoti praindoeuropietišką šios baltų kalbų leksinės šeimos priešistorę. Šio straipsnio tikslas – aptarti tiek morfologinę, tiek semantinę ‘dangaus’ pavadinimo struktūrą ir paaiškinti visas jo ypatybes, siūlant naują žodžio kilmės ir raidos hipotezę. Traditionally the Baltic name of the ‘sky’ (Lith. dangùs, Old Pr. dangus) is explained as derived from the verb deñgti ‘to cover’, based on the assumption that the sky was conceived of as a kind of curved surface covering the world. However, this traditional approach has left two questions open until now: (1) how to explain the formation of the word dangus, which is more akin to that of an adjective than to that of a noun; (2) how to reconstruct the PIE prehistory of this Baltic lexical family. The aim of this paper is to discuss both the morphological and the semantic structure of the word dangus and to explain all its features, by proposing a new hypothesis on its origin and development.

Williamas Riegelis Schmalstiegas (1929 10 03–2021 01 22) gerą savo gyvenimo dalį praleido Pensilvanijoje, kur įsikūrė 1964 m. (Penn State University, Steit Koledžo mieste). Jis studijavo Minesotos universitete ir vėliau Kolumbijos universitete Niujorke pas André Martinet. Pradžioje tyrė rusų bei senovės slavų kalbas, vėliau ir vis labiau lietuvių ir senąją prūsų kalbą. Daugelis jo darbų, skelbtų solidžiomis monografijomis, taip pat daug kitų autorių knygų recenzijų, išbarstytų įvairiuose tarptautiniuose žurnaluose, remiasi ir slavų, ir baltų kalbų duomenimis, tačiau visuomet aiškūs ir tikslūs lieka indoeuropeistikos ir lyginamosios lingvistikos rėmai, o jo originalios pažiūros apie fonologiją, vardažodžių ir veiksmažodžių formų raidas, morfologijos ir sintaksės sąveiką yra apibendrintos knygoje Indo-European Linguistics: A New Synthesis (1980). Šias tris sritis Schmalstiegas sujungė nuosekliai metodologiškai. Su šiomis temomis susijęs ir agento kilmininko indoeuropiečių kalbose tyrimas (1995a). Schmalstiegui patiko pasakoti apie savo, kaip jis sakė, asmeninį rekordą, tai yra, kad tolimais 1970-aisiais jis buvęs vienintelis JAV kalbininkas (ir vienas iš dviejų „Vakarų“ kraštų kartu su Wolfgangu P. Schmidu), dalyvavęs II baltistų suvažiavime Vilniuje. Nuo to laiko jo pranešimai tapo kaip ir atskaitos tašku visuose pagrindiniuose moksliniuose baltistikos renginiuose, o ir jo pasisakymai, visuomet atidūs, pagarbūs pašnekovams, kolegų buvo išklausomi ir vertinami. Na, ne mažiau populiarumo sulaukė ir jo anekdotai, jo pasakojami po mokslinių sesijų.

Rašant apie prūsišką vardyną, būtina turėti galvoje ir kitų baltų kalbų vardyną, tautosaką, mitologiją, istoriją, archeologiją, kultūrą, etnologiją, nes be visų tų mokslų sintezės tyrimai jau nebeįmanomi. Prūsų vardyno tyrimai pradėti XIX amžiuje, XX amžiuje jau tapo neatskiriama baltų filologijos dalis. Didžiausi nuopelnai priklauso Jurgiui Geruliui (1912, 1922), Ernst Lewy (1904) ir Reinholdui Trautmannui (1925). 1985 m. garsiojo baltisto, indoeuropeisto ir onomasto iniciatyva pasirodė pirmasis naujos serijos "Hydronymia Europaea“, leidžiamos Mainco mokslų ir literatūros akademijos, tomas (Górnowicz 1985)1. Iš viso buvo išleisti 20 tomų, skirtų vandenvardžių tyrimams, trys specialieji tomai, skirti gyvenamųjų vietų aptarimui (žr. Przybytek 1993; Blažienė 2000, 2005) ir paskutinis tomas buvo specialiųjų tomų indeksas (Eggers 2006). Kolegos lenkai medžiagą rinko iš rašytinių šaltinių. Straipsnio autorė, labai seniai nusprendusi, kad patikimiausia medžiaga yra gausiuose Vokiečių ordino rankraštiniuose paminkluose, ištikimai dirbo ir tebedirba būtent su autentiškiausia medžiaga – rankraštiniais dokumentais. Įdėmiai susipažinus su lenkų vardyno tyrėjos 1993 metų darbu, paaiškėjo, kad ne visa medžiaga, apimanti jos tiriamą sritį, t. y. pietinę Rytų Prūsijos dalį, atsispindi toje dalyje, taip pat kapitaliniame Lenkijos onomastų veikale "Nazwy miejscowe Polski“, pradėtame leisti 1996 metais, redaguojant lenkų onomastikos milžinui Kazimierzui Rymutui. Todėl 2005 metų autorės monografijoje buvo nutarta papildyti R. Przybytek tirtą sritį naujai surastais ar interpretuotinais gyvenamųjų vietų vardais. The research of the Prussian onomasticon is inseparable from the onomasticon of other Baltic languages, folklore, mythology, history, archaeology, culture, or ethnology, because without the synthesis of all those sciences such studies are impossible. Research into the Prussian onomasticon began in the 19th century, and by the 20th century it had already become an integral part of Baltic philology. Among the most deserving researchers are Jurgis Gerulis, Reinhold Trautmann, Janis Endzelyns, Vytautas Mažiulis, Vladimir Nikolayevich Toporov. One should not forget the immeasurable input into the studies of the Prussian onomasticon made by Wolfgang P. Schmidt, a famous German Balticist, Indo-Europeanist and onomastician, who, together with his Polish colleagues, began publishing a new series Hydronymia Europaea, the first volume of which appeared in 1985. Many researchers of the Prussian onomasticon, including Polish scholars, study it on the basis of written material, but the author of the current paper believes that the most reliable and authentic sources are the rich manuscript documents of the German Order (GO). It is this viewpoint and acquaintance with the research carried out by colleagues that have repeatedly shown that not all Prussian material, covering southern East Prussia, collected by Polish scholars is reflected in the Polish series, Nazwy miejscowe Polski which have been published since 1996. It has long been clear that onomasticians must be familiar with the specifics of the documents from which empirical material is being collected. An invaluable asset in the research process is the ability of the researcher to make the distinction between land names and place names. The GO manuscripts also contain valuable data on the naming of Prussians and settlements of people of other nationalities in the Prussian lands. The study of empirical material also reveals a phenomenon that existed in East Prussia at that time – several names of the same settlements, i. e. settlements with two names, the emergence of which was most likely due to a change in the ownership of the settlements. For example, among such settlement names the name Smausgheyeyn villa (village) can be mentioned, which was written circa 1400 A. D. and mentioned in later sources as 1474 das Dorf Cleyn Smaußeyn, 1543 Bundicken, 1785 Bündken, circa 1790 Bindken, 1946 Buendken – Bądki, 1951 Bądki – Bündtken. The Prussian onomasticon has been studied in Lithuania and abroad since the second half of the 20th century, i.e., for many years, during which it was possible to prove that Prussian proper names are the separate object of research and that the fundamental works of Jurgis Gerulis and Reinhold Trautmann were only a solid beginning, based on which the representatives of many onomastics schools (Lithuanian, Latvian, Polish, Russian, German, etc.) developed their research directions. In Lithuania, the Prussian onomasticon is studied by the author of the current paper and her student dr. Darius Ivoška, who has understood the significance of manuscript heritage for Onomastics. Prussian hydronyms were described by Feliksas Daubaras. The Prussian onomasticon is used by many scholars of the world as an aid in researching Lithuanian and Latvian proper names and in explaining complex problems of Indo-European studies. Undoubtedly, the Prussian onomasticon needs to be studied very carefully, cautiously and accurately, as the Prussian language is now dead, leaving us with more than a thousand proper names – place names, land names, hydronyms, personal names from which the Prussian appellatives can be restored, i.e., common words, that may enrich the legacy of the now scarce general vocabulary of the Prussian language. Prussian proper names are the earliest witnesses of the Baltic languages, as they were very neatly written in the books of the GO Chancellery. The clerks of the Order wrote down the Prussian proper names from the living language, and later, as more folios of the Order were written, the names were copied from one folio to another. It is clear from the examples given in the article that there were more names of Prussian settlements than were examined by Rozalia Przybytek in her work published in 1993. It is also clear that the study of the Prussian onomasticon is in many respects a complex process that provides knowledge about both the language and the history of the nation that no longer exists.

Naujoji Daivos Vaitkevičienės monografija "Žydinti taurė: baltų gėrimai ir apeigos" skirta lietuvių svaigiųjų gėrimų ir su jais susijusių papročių bei jų įvairiapusio konteksto aptarimui. Atliktų tyrimų apimtis ir aprėptis išties įspūdinga ir nebūdinga Lietuvos humanitariniams mokslams bei jų institucijų tyrimams, kuriuose vyrauja siaura specializacija, skirstanti etninės kultūros tyrimus į tautosakos ir naratyvų, etnomuzikos, papročių, materialinės kultūros ir socialinės kultūros, liaudies meno ir kt. sritis: autorė aprėpė ne tik tautosaką, liaudies dailę ir amatus bei verslus, bet ir papročius, kultūros istoriją bei istorijos ir archeologijos medžiagą bei pasitelkė latvių, lietuvininkų bei prūsų kultūrų duomenis. [...] A new monograph, "Žydinti taurė: baltų gėrimai ir apeigos" (The Flowering Cup: Baltic Drinks and Rituals) by Daiva Vaitkevičienė, examines the production of alcoholic drinks in Lithuania, and their socio-cultural and world-view contexts. The study covers many areas of research into folk culture: folklore and narratives, mythology, ethnic music, customs, material and social culture, folk art, archaeology, comparative linguistics and etymology. The author has uncovered a broad composite view of the syncretism of culture, its history, and creative processes, and offers an interdisciplinary perspective. Vaitkevičienė researches the phenomenon of intoxicating drinks, and various aspects of it: customs (especially the ritual aspect, including the typology of place, time and participants; songs-hymns, prayers, toasts, and other ritual and festive folklore; and actions in the ritual act of drinking, as a necessary element of the phenomenon of the reconstructed past), production techniques (including farming and beekeeping, the cultivation or use of raw materials, from wild or semi-wild nature, and their preparation; crafts or businesses in the area in question), the process, and tools and means. The author also classifies drinks according to taste and strength, and examines means of drinking and storing drinks. She describes the social role of drinks, and the farming practices, crafts and businesses related to them (especially in bringing together farming and beekeeping communities) in all walks of life; and the legal role of drinking rituals, the rich vocabulary and phraseology used to describe the phenomenon and its elements, and mythical-poetic images in Lithuanian and other Baltic languages and folklore. Finally, she looks at various metaphorical, symbolic and religiouspsychological concepts of the phenomenon of drinks in the Baltic mentality, and diverse mythical-poetic interpretations of this phenomenon in culture. The author uses ethnographic historical texts, and oral and visual material (drawings); archival descriptions, iconographic visual material (extremely valuable photographs depicting the production of drinks); and artefacts or parts of them in ethnographic and archaeological collections in museums. Much of the data was collected on ethnographic-folklore expeditions conducted by the author. The topics and issues in the new monograph are a continuation of the studies by Angelė Vyšniauskaitė and Jonas Mardosa, which present a classification of intoxicating drinks, their connections with customs and other social roles, and the historical dynamics (Vyšniauskaitė 1989; Mardosa 2007). Vaitkevičienė applies folklore-mythological interpretations and analyses, enriched with elements of religious studies, as well as a functionalist, social and evolutionary ethnological perspective, and a social anthropological approach to objects of the material culture as social agents. The author also employs a methodological approach close to semiotics, ethno-semiotics and ethno-linguistics, which interprets the world-view of culture and stereotypes, based on a systematic analysis of language and folklore data. The study is closer to a folkloristic-semiotic interpretation approach than to a sociological interpretation, or to the geographical regionalisation based on social representativeness of answers obtained in the field research and the classification of the variability of data which prevail in Lithuanian ethnology. In other words, her research can be characterised by cultural insights and systematisation. At the same time, the author pays special attention to ethnographic details and their diversity: material and aesthetic, mythological and sensory (sound, taste and colour), and other small details that conventional ethnography does not deal with. She also investigates the meaning of mythical-poetic images in folklore associated with artefacts, social phenomena, natural phenomena, and the mythical world. Vaitkevičienė perceptively connects brewing and beekeeping with farming communities and their festivities. Using as analogy Algirdas Julius Greimas’ insights into the influence of the beekeeping tradition on the development of the Crusaders as social phenomenon of Medieval Germany, the author draws new conclusions about the early origins of the Lithuanian military elite in beekeeping communities. She pays special attention to the syncretism and typological structure of the drinking ritual: types of celebrations and parties, their place, time and duration, the composition of participants, the sexual aspect of celebrations and drinks, the typology and structure of ritual vessels, toasts and libation, and the legal role of ritual drinking. By applying a structuralist-semiotic approach, the author contrasts the tradition of drinking intoxicating drinks, closely related to rituals, with simple non-alcoholic beverages meant for every day and the busy season. This attitude is very doubtful, because in Vyšniauskaitė’s opinion, at the beginning water played the role of a ritual drink. However, it was eventually replaced by beer, wine and vodka, and the original meaning of water was forgotten (Vyšniauskaitė 1964b). The monograph does not examine gira, the most distinctive Baltic non-alcoholic beverage. [...]

The article presents some ideas about the hybrids that are made by combining the neoclassical elements or are mixed of Lithuanian or Latvian and foreign origin combining forms. The examples of hybrids found in English are also provided. This corpus-based investigation reveals that the formation of hybrids with final neoclassical combining forms in modern Baltic languages is a sufficiently active, productive and unobtrusive process of creativity and wit. The identified structural types of hybrids are the following: 1) the hybrids with the international elements of different classical or neoclassical origin; 2) the hybrids with the initial element of non-classical origin. They are almost identical in the analysed languages, suggesting that they are often borrowed and translated rather than created, but if they are created, then this is done by obvious analogy. Some Lithuanian and Latvian hybrids have long been used and included in various dictionaries, and their frequency in the linguistic corpus is quite high. However, most examples of hybrid origin do not exist and probably do not appear in dictionaries due to their rare use, uniqueness, distinctive form or irregularity. The knowledge of hybrid formation and usage can be relevant to the learners of Lithuanian, Latvian, and English, as well as translators, terminologists, and lexicographers, Jau nebe pirmą dešimtmetį įvairių kalbų leksikologai, terminologai ir žodžių darybos specialistai šiuolaikinių kalbų žodynuose stebi ryškią tarptautiškėjimo tendenciją, prie kurios prisideda ne tik iš klasikinės kilmės dėmenų sudaryti tarptautiniai žodžiai, naujieji anglicizmai, bet ir hibridai, t. y. mišrios kilmės žodžiai. Šiuolaikinės baltų kalbos taip pat ne išimtis. Lietuvių ir latvių kalbose daug hibridizacijos pavyzdžių, o hibridai kuriami ne tik iš skirtingos kilmės neoklasikinių dėmenų, bet ir su vienu lietuvišku arba latvišku dėmeniu. Šiuo tyrimu siekiama atskleisti hibridų su antruoju neoklasikiniu, postpoziciniu, dėmeniu struktūrinę įvairovę, pateikti įžvalgų apie jų vartojimo priežastis ir išsiaiškinti, ar tikrai jie, kaip teigiama kai kurių autorių darbuose, praktiškai nebevartojami. Internetiniuose tekstynuose ltTENTEN14 ir lvTENTEN14 rasti pavyzdžiai parodė, kad tokie hibridai yra dažni, jų darybai didelę įtaką turi analogija su klasikiniais ir neoklasikiniais dariniais. Analizuojamų hibridų struktūra kartais pasiskolinama. Tokiais atvejais klasikinis antrasis dėmuo paliekamas, o pirmasis išverčiamas į lietuvių kalbą. Konkordansų analizė atskleidė, kad tiek lietuvų, tiek latvių kalbose hibridai kuriami ne tik dėl nominacijos, bet ir siekiant stilistinio, emocinio ar net rinkodarinio efekto.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjami kai kurie baltų, finougrų ir slavų (rusų) kalbų sąveikos aspektai. Siūloma rusų tarmių leksinių vienetų, kurios atsirado Rusijos šiaurės vakarų tarmėse iš baltų, suomių kalbų bei jų tarmių, nustatant galinį baltų šaltinį. Leksiniai duomenys, įtraukti į tyrimą, tam tikrais atvejais yra ankstesnių laikotarpių skoliniai iš baltų kalbų. Šie vienetai baltų ir suomių kalbiniame kontinuume sudaro jo neatsiejamą dalį, dažnai turi transformuotą formą bei pakeistą semantiką lyginant su baltų etimonais. Straipsnyje taip pat kritiškai analizuojami kai kurie ankstesnių tyrimų bandymai gretinti baltų kalbų duomenis ir finougrų medžiagą. The problem of Baltic-Finnish, Baltic and Slavic (Russian) interaction has already been examined by us in various aspects: the differentiation of the Baltic-Finnish substratum in the North Russian dialects; the relationship of these Baltic and Baltic-Finnish origins in the Russian dialects of the Northwest; the Baltisms that are included in the Russian dialects through the medium of the Baltic-Finnish languages, etc. In this article, an attempt is made, on the basis of dialectal materials, to analyze the lexical units included in Russian dialects from the Baltic-Finnic languages with their final Baltsky source. The lexical data considered by us as lexemes of the Baltic-Finish origin are, in some cases, not native to this soil but represent earlier Baltic borrowings. These units of the Baltic-Finnish language continuum are its integral part; they often have a transformed form and semantics in comparison with the Baltic etymons. Later attempts were made either to expand or narrow the list of such units. Some of the lexemes of Baltic origin, being an integral part of the Baltic-Finnish continuum, had spread further to the North Russian dialects. This article gives examples of such mediated Baltics, which, due to the Baltic-Finnish influence, have spread widely in Russian dialects.

The purpose of this article is to present the history of the comparison made by scholars between the Latin fifth declension and the Baltic -ē-stems and to decide whether both of those formations could go back to a common Indo-European source. It is claimed that the *-eh1- nominal stems did not exist as such in the proto-language and that both the Baltic -ē-stems and the Latin fifth declension are secondary developments of other Indo-European formations.

Lith. rìsti, rìta “roll” (Latv. rist, ritu), riẽsti, riẽčia “bend” (la. rìest, rìešu) and Sl. *‑rě̋sti, *‑rę̋t(j)ǫ, *‑rě̋tъ “find” derive from the PIE root *ret- “roll” (cf. OIr. rethid “runs”; Lith. rãtas, OHG rad, Lat. rota etc. “wheel”). We can reconstruct a PIE Narten present *rḗts‑ti/*rét‑ti that in Balto-Slavic was thematized into *rēt‑e/o‑ and acquired a zero-grade aorist-infinitive stem *t‑ >*irt‑ → *rit‑ (with metathesis on analogy with pres. *rēt-). The complex rebuilding of the present stem in Sl. *rē‑n‑t‑()e/o- depended on the semantic development “roll” >“run” >“find”. In Baltic the unusual ablaut pattern *rēt‑e/o- : *rit‑ was rebuilt as regular *reit‑e/o- : *rit‑. At a later stage of the development of the Baltic verb it split into the two primary verbs *risti, *rita and *reisti, *reita.

Dažnai manoma, kad indoeuropiečių ablautas, vartojamas kaip submorfema kartu su kitomis morfemomis, laikui bėgant linksta išnykti atskirų indoeuropiečių kalbų istorijoje. Kita vertus, kai kurių mokslininkų manyta, kad ablautas dažnai būna toks produktyvus, kad skverbiasi į kategorijas, kurios pradžioje jo neturėjo. Literatūroje abi teorijos turi savo šalininkų, pirmoji – Mańczaką (1958), antroji - Kuryłowiczių (1947). Šiame straipsnyje, skiriamame prof. It is often assumed that PIE ablaut, used as a sub-morpheme accompanying other morphemes, tends to recede over time in the history of the individual Indo-European languages. On the other hand, it has been argued by some scholars that ablaut is often productive enough to expand over categories that did not have it originally. Both positions were advocated in the literature, the former by Mańczak (1958), the latter by Kuryłowicz (1947). In this paper, dedicated to Prof. Wojciech Smoczyński, this debate is discussed and illustrated by Baltic examples.

Straipsnyje pristatomas tekstynų medžiaga paremtas lietuvių ir latvių kalbų skaitvardžių vartojimo dažnumo tyrimas. Surinkta medžiaga rodo šiuos požymius: a) didelis mažiausius skaičius įvardijančių skaitvardžių dažnumas; b) bendra dažnumo mažėjimo tendencija kiekvienos serijos (vienetų, dešimčių ir t. t.) elementų eilėje nuo pirmo iki paskutinio; c) dažnumo viršūnės dažnai atitinka svarbias struktūrines pozicijas sistemoje. Kartu su kitų kalbų duomenimis šie požymiai patvirtina, kad kalbos vartotojų universalūs kognityviniai gebėjimai ir jų ribotumas atlieka svarbų vaidmenį skaitvardžių dažnumo distribucijos struktūroje. Tuo pačiu metu kultūriniai faktoriai yra taip pat įtraukti į skaičių konceptų kognityvinės hierarchijos kūrimo procesą. Straipsnyje siūloma skirti įgimtą (kognityvinį) ir neįgimtą (lingvistinį ir kultūrinį) iškilumą. Pastarasis yra atsakingas už referencinių skaičių identifikaciją – taip suteikiama daugiau patikimumo iš dalies reliatyvistinei hipotezei, kad kalbos sistema daro įtaką kalbėtojų mentalinio žemėlapio formavimui skaičių kognityvinėje srityje. This work consists of a corpus-based study on the frequency of the use of numerals in Lithuanian and Latvian. The collected data display the following features: a) the high frequency of the lowest numerals; b) a generally decreasing trend from the first to the last element of each series (units, tens, etc.); c) peaks of frequency often corresponding to important structural positions in the system. In line with the data available for other languages, these features seem to confirm that the universal cognitive abilities and limitations of the speakers play a major role in structuring the frequency of the use of numerals. At the same time, cultural factors are also involved in the process of creating a cognitive hierarchy among number concepts. I suggest distinguishing between innate (cognitive) and non-innate (linguistic and cultural) saliency. The latter is responsible for the identification of reference numbers, thus giving greater credence to the partially relativistic hypothesis that the linguistic system influences the mental mapping of the speakers in the cognitive domain of numbers.

Straipsnyje aprašoma semantinių talpyklos ir atramos kategorijų raiška lietuvių, latvių ir estų kalbose. Kalbos vartojamos tame pačiame areale, bet tik dvi pirmosios yra genetiškai susijusios. Tiriamųjų kalbų duomenys yra gauti atlikus eksperimentą (produkcijos užduotis, 60 kiekvienos kalbos dalyvių), kurio metu dalyviai turėjo aprašyti objektų padėtį nuotraukose, vaizduojančiose pagrindinius talpyklos ir atramos potipius. Talpyklos kategoriją sudarė pilno talpinimo, dalinio talpinimo ir sukibimo subkategorijos, o atramos – horizontalios atramos, prilipimo, kabėjimo ir apjuosimo su sąlyčiu subkategorijos. Rezultatai rodo, kad geriausiai talpyklos ir atramos kategorijas reprezentuoja pilnas talpinimas ir horizontali atrama – pastariesiems potipiams apibūdinti pasitelkiama mažiausiai kalbinių priemonių, jos neįvairuoja, o kitiems potipiams būdingas raiškos heterogeniškumas. Palyginus visų trijų kalbų duomenis matyti, kad baltų kalbos talpyklą vardija labai panašiai, o atramos raiškos priemonės artimesnės latvių ir estų kalbose. Tyrimas suteikia papildomų duomenų apie semantinius baltų kalbų skirtumus ir išryškina latvių kalbos ypatybes, atsiradusias dėl kontaktų su estų kalba. This paper aims to describe how spatial semantic categories of containment and support are expressed in three languages, – Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian, – which are spoken in the same area, though only the first two of them are genealogically related. Our research is based on a production task (n = 60 for each language) consisting of answers to picture stimuli representing major subtypes of containment and support: full containment, partial containment and interlocking for containment and support-from-below, adhesion, hanging and encirclement with contact for support. The results show that the core types of containment and support, namely, full-containment and support-from-below, are expressed most homogenously and using least terms in all three languages, but other sub-types trigger more variety. Cross-linguistically, containment is expressed similarly in the Baltic languages, but in terms of conceptualization and expression of support, Latvian and Estonian share more commonalities. This provides new evidence for semantic diversity of the Baltic languages and language-contact induced peculiarities of Latvian.

To summarize the outcomes of the research into mythologemes, recorded in the Yatvigian Book, as well as into other genetic IE mythonimic alternants, the following principal statements are to be formulated: (1) the list of theonyms of YB presupposes a reconstruction of the demonological order of the mythonyms; (2) YB should not be regarded as a material of the Episcopal inspection (therefore, it should not be related with Agenda Ecclesiastica or its authors) or an odd frag' ment of a more extensive source written adhering to the stylistics of the Renais' sance, but as an example of a juristic document; (3) YB cannot be characterized as an authentic source of the religious practices and beliefs of Western Balts.

Upėvardžiai Liẽkė, Liekà ir kiti bendrašakniai vandenvardžiai iki šiol teminimi „Senosios Europos“ hidronimijo tyrimuose. Etimologiškai juos įprasta sieti su praindoeuropiečių šaknimi *(h1 )lei̯k- ‘krypti, linkti’, nors tokios šaknies greičiausiai nebūta, nes ji neišlikusi indoeuropiečių kalbų apeliatyvinėje leksikoje. Jeigu tokia šaknis *(h1 )lei̯k- ir būtų egzistavusi, jos neįmanoma susieti su jokia reikšme. Gal būtų prasmingiau abu lietuvių upėvardžius kildinti iš praindoeuropiečių šaknies *u̯lei̯ku̯- ‘drėkti, šlapti’. Sąsajos su baltų kalbų leksika galimos, bet sunkiai pagrindžiamos. Taip pat reikia pripažinti, kad upėvardis Lech, kurį aiškinant minėtomis šaknimis buvo gana dažnai remiamasi, taip pat negali būti kildinamas iš praindoeuropiečių šaknies *(h1 )lei̯k-, kadangi tokios šaknies greičiausiai nebūta kaip ir praindoeuropiečių *u̯lei̯ku̯-, nes nesama jų fonologinių siejimo motyvų. Veikiausiai galima kalbėti apie keltišką darinį, kurio reikšmė būtų siejama su ‘akmeninga(-s), akmenuota(-s)’: praindoeuropiečių *pl̥(h2 )k-(m)néh2 - >ankstyvoji prakeltiška *φlikkā- >prakeltiška *likkā. Taigi paaiškėja, kad liet. Liẽkė, Liekà ir kt. bei vok. Lech etimologiškai nesusiję. The river-names Lith. Liẽkė, Liekà (and their siblings) are sometimes mentioned in papers dealing with the so-called ‘Old-European hydronymy’. Traditionally they are etymologized on the basis of a root PIE *(h1 )lei̯k- ‘bend’. This root, however, probably never existed, at least there seem to be no descendents from it in the appellatival lexicon of any IE language. Thus the root – if it ever existed – cannot be ascribed a meaning. So it seems more appropriate to derive the Lithuanian river-names from the root PIE *u̯lei̯ku̯ - ‘moisten, be liquid’. Parallelly the river-name Lech (a river in Austria and Bavaria) was also analyzed based on the two roots mentioned, PIE *(h1 )lei̯k- ‘bend’ and PIE *u̯lei̯ku̯ - ‘moisten, be liquid’. As just mentioned, the first one, however, never existed – and the second one cannot be the starting point because of phonological reasons. The river-name Lech is based on a Celtic formation ‘the one with stone(-plate)s’: PIE *pl̥(h2 )k-(m)néh2 - >PCelt. *(φ)likkā-. Thus it is clear that the river-names Lith. Liẽkė, Liekà etc. and Germ. Lech do not have a common etymology.

Archyvinis dokumentas Lietuvių kalbos žodynas (signatūra IV A 11) yra saugomas Čekijos nacionalinio muziejaus bibliotekos rankraščių ir senųjų spaudinių skyriuje. Šis rankraštinis leksikografinis paminklas datuojamas XIX a. pirmąja puse. Jame yra 1701 straipsnis. Šiame straipsnyje analizuojamas žodyno autorystės klausimas remiantis ankstesniais tyrimais, kuriuose F. L. Čelakovskis nurodomas kaip galimas žodyno autorius. Straipsnyje pristatomi nauji Čekijoje atliktos teismo rašysenos ekspertizės rezultatai. Aptariami įrodymai remiasi prielaida, kad F. L. Čelakovskis yra rankraštinio Lietuvių kalbos žodyno autorius. The archival document Dictionary o f the Lithuanian Language (shelfmark IV A 11) is kept at the Department of Manuscripts and Early Printed Books of the Czech National Museum Library. This handwritten lexicographic relic is dated to the first half of the 19,h century and contains 1701 entries. This article focuses on the matter of authorship of this relic following previous research studies, in which F. L. Celakovsky was suggested as the likely author of the Dictionary. The article presents new findings revealed from a Czech professional handwriting analysis. The evidence discussed in the article is based on the assumption that F. L. Celakovsky is the author of the handwritten Dictionary o f the Lithuanian Language.

Straipsnyje analizuojama baltų kalba, vartota Kuršių nerijoje iki 1958 m. Šis geolektas Prūsijos teritorijoje formavosi XV–XVIII a. tuometinių Kuršo dialektų pagrindu, trumpai gyvavo ir beveik išnykęs. Kuršių nerija dėl savo unikalaus gamtinio ir kultūrinio kraštovaizdžio yra įtraukta į UNES CO pasaulio paveldo sąrašą. Straipsnyje siekiama pagrįsti ir akcentuoti būtinybę tirti, saugoti ir pagal galimybes atgaivinti kuršininkų kalbą, kuri buvo svarbi Kuršių nerijos kultūrinio unikalumo dalis. The paper presents a Baltic language used on the Curonian Spit in Lithuania up to 1958. It evolved on the Curonian Spit between the 15th and the 18th centuries, on the basis of the dialect of Courland It had a short lifespan and is extremely endangered. The Curonian Spit is a UNES CO World Heritage Site due to the unique nature of its cultural landscape. This paper aims to highlight the importance of research, preservation and the possible revitalisation of a small community language that played a highly significant role in the culture of a particular region.

Straipsnyje, aptariant naujausius fundamentinius lyginamuosius dabartinių bendrinių baltų kalbų garsyno ir koartikuliacijos instrumentinius tyrimus, nepamirštant ir nelyginamųjų darbų - naujų reikšmingų instrumentinių bendrinės lietuvių kalbos balsių ir garsų sąveikos tyrimų, glaustai nagrinėjama metodologijos įvairovė, tam tikros metodikos pasirinkimo niuansai ir eksperimentinio tyrimo sudėtingumo priežastys pastaruosius dešimt metų. Taip pat apžvelgiami svarbūs lyginamieji lietuvių tarmių garsyno (prozodijos elementų) instrumentiniai tyrimai, dėmesį kreipiant į jų reikšmę, metodologinius ypatumus ir tolesnes perspektyvas. Tiriamosios medžiagos ir metodikos bei tikslų ir uždavinių lyginamiesiems instrumentiniams tyrimams pagrindimas ir pasirinkimas įvairuoja - tai itin susiję su tyrimo apimtimi ir specifika, lyginamųjų kalbų ar tarmių inventoriumi ir funkcinio relevantiškumo teorijomis, galimybėmis rinktis ir naudotis naujausiomis kompiuterinėmis garsų analizės ir statistikos programomis, teikiama praktine nauda ir pan. This article discusses the complexity and importance of methodological diversity in the comparative experimental research conducted over the past five years on the sounds of the contemporary standard Baltic languages. Some of the most recent non-comparative studies on the sounds of Standard Lithuanian are also considered. In addition, significant comparative instrumental studies in the field of the Lithuanian dialectology are reviewed to highlight the main methodological trends, benefits, and challenges to consider. Investigations of the relevant units of vowel and the prosodic systems of the Lithuanian dialects form the largest part of the current experimental studies. Since the biggest proportion of all instrumental sound investigations has been carried out by the students of the Lithuanian phonologist prof. Aleksas Girdenis) at the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, a traditional Lithuanian school of phonologists-instrumentalists, whose work is based on similar methods and principles, should be noted. Phonological interpretations, based on the results of experimental sound research, are the most significant feature of the Lithuanian phonology school. The researchers consider that the instrumental investigations in phonology can perform only an auxiliary role with the decisive role being played by the actual distinctive power of sound units. The material, methods and goals of comparative studies vary: the peculiarities of methodological issues and the complexity of experimental research depend on the aims and the scope of the study. This is important in a number of ways: when comparing the selected results (data) and material of different languages or different (sub)dialects; developing new terminology; looking for opportunities to apply the International Phonetic Alphabet to the sounds of the Lithuanian dialects; providing the vowel and consonant classifications based on different methodologies; identifying the need for further theoretical perspectives, innovative methods and research aspects; setting new goals; updating the practical benefits and requirements of such experimental studies as well as the availability of audio recordings on national and international level, while considering the rapidly changing technologies and accessibility of the sound research (results, records) on the internet for creating advanced digital resources and databases as well as the artificial intelligence tools. All studies described in this article consolidate the Lithuanian terminology of the acoustics of language or dialect, apply a methodology of instrumental sound and pitch accent research, which is in some cases new to the Lithuanian linguistics and will introduce the traditional (Girdenis) school of the Lithuanian phonetics and phonology into the global context of comparable research. Such experimental investigations build the foundation on which further instrumental studies of the standard Baltic languages and the Lithuanian dialects may be continued to reveal other important aspects and perspectives. The investigations described in this article could potentially be expanded by including other positions of vowels and consonants, by considering the informant’s place of birth, age, etc. Comparative experimental studies help highlight the differences and characteristics of the phonemic inventories, the prosodic features of different languages or dialects, the nuances of possible phonetic and phonological classifications, the universal distinctive features of sounds, even the peculiarities of the empirical material and the methods used in the studies, possible aims of the experimental analysis, and other aspects. New instrumental scientific and practical research could increase the Lithuanian sound methodological innovations and set clearer prospects for any future investigations.

By this article the author finishes the description of Žagarė local dialect. The article analyzes its syntactic phenomena and discusses morphosyntactic constructions (perficientive, expression of necessity and condition, arthroid), which can also be found in another Baltic language, i.e. Latvian. The article describes the dialectal expression of the subject, object, time, place and cause in the sentence. It reviews the linking words of dangling constructions and complex sentences used in the dialect. Based on Phraseological Dictionary and Dictionary o f Comparisons, the article describes the dialect’s phraseology (traditional phraseological units and stable word phrases) and comparisons and draws attention to the insightfully applied expressive content in the dialect.

Straipsnyje aptariama baltų kalbų postpozicinių vietininkų istorija, remiantis šiuolaikine baltų-slavų akcentologija ir baltų Auslautgesetze. Pagrindinis veiksnys, nulėmęs vietos linksnių kirčiavimą, buvo baltų-slavų enclinomena raida baltų kalbose. Kai formavosi postpoziciniai vietininkai, enclinomena dar buvo kalbos sistemos dalis. Tai davė pradžią galūniniam tokių formų, kaip o-kam. vns. all. *miśkā+pr̲̲, kirčiavimui. Kai enclinomena išnyko vardažodžio sistemoje, kirtis buvo atitrauktas į artimiausią skiemenį, lydimas akūtinės metatonijos (plg. *miśkā+pr̲̲ >*miśkā̲̍pre̲̲, lie. miškóp(i)). Tokiu būdu atsirado postpozicinių vietininkų formos su nelaukta kirčio vieta ir (ar) nelaukta akūtine priegaide. Kitas svarbus faktorius buvo Sosiūro dėsnis, kuris vyko gerokai vėlesniu laikotarpiu lietuvių kalbos priešistorėje. Kitos išvados, kylančios iš šio straipsnio išeities pozicijos: 1) iliatyvas, aliatyvas ir adesyvas atsirado prabaltų laikais dėl uraliečių kalbų įtakos. The article discusses the history of the Baltic secondary local cases within the framework of modern Balto-Slavic accentology and recent advances in our knowledge of the Baltic Auslautgesetze. The main factor determining the accent of the local cases was the development of Balto-Slavic enclinomena in Baltic. When the local cases were created enclinomena were still preserved, leading to word forms with stress on the original adposition (e.g. o-stem all. sg. *miśkā+pr̲̲). When nominal enclinomena were lost the accent shifted to the immediate left with concomitant métatonie rude, yielding *miśkā̲̍pre̲̲ (Lith. miškóp(i), in contrast with gen. sg. mìško). This was the origin of unexpected stress position and unexpected acute intonation in the secondary local cases. Another important factor was Saussure’s law, which took place at a much later stage in the immediate prehistory of Lithuanian. Other conclusions emanating from the accentological approach of this article include the following: 1) the illative, allative and adessive go back to Proto-Baltic and reflect Uralic influence. The inessive was created in East Baltic; 2) the adessive was built on the dative, as first proposed by Rosinas (2000); 3) the local cases underwent a number of innovations in East Baltic, most saliently in the illative plural and the locative; 4) the adpositional nature of the allative and adessive was perceived for a considerably longer period of time than that of the illative and inessive, which determined a partly different development of these cases; 5) finally, new accounts are proposed for some of the local cases (i- and u-stem dative and adessive singular; ā- and ē-stem locative and inessive singular; u-stem inessive singular; illative plural).

Du veiksmažodžiai – liet. mirti / latv. mirt ‘mirti’ ir liet. (-)miršti / latv. (-)mirst ‘pamiršti’ – turi keletą bendrų istorinės morfologijos ypatybių: abu šie veiksmažodžiai turi esamojo laiko sta- kamieną, nepaisant giminiškų indoeuropietiškų esamojo laiko *-ye/o- kamienų formų; iš indoeuropiečių prokalbės galima rekonstruoti, kad šių veiksmažodžių šakniniai aoristai linksniuojami kaip medijai; abu šie veiksmažodžiai pasižymi medijų semantika. Vis dėlto palyginus baltų kalbas matyti, kad jų preteritų kamienai skiriasi: liet. mirė / latv. miru (ē) ir liet. miršo / latv. mirsu (ā). Šiame straipsnyje lyginant semantines ir fonologines ypatybes tiriama, kodėl šie veiksmažodžiai įgijo skirtingus preterito kamienus, bei prisidedama prie visos protobaltų kalbos preterito sistemos rekonstrukcijos. Straipsnyje teigiama, kad liet. mirė / latv. miru (ē) tikriausiai yra kilęs iš senojo imperfekto kamieno, o liet. miršo / latv. mirsu (ā) dėl aoristinių semantinių ypatybių galėtų būti kilęs iš senojo aoristo kamieno. Šis istorinis skirtumas atsispindi skirtinguose jų preterito kamienuose. The verbs Lith. mirti / Latv. mirt ‘to die’ and Lith. (-)miršti / Latv. (-)mirst ‘to forget’ share several features in historical morphology: both take sta-present stem, in spite of their Indo-European cognates in the *-ye/o- present stem; the root-aorist in the middle voice inflection can be reconstructed in PIE; and both are also semantically middle. However, they are contrastive in the past tense in Baltic, taking different preterit stems, i.e., Lith. mirė / Latv. miru(ē) and Lith. miršo / Latv. mirsu(ā). This article will investigate what led them to choose the different preterit stems by comparing their semantic and phonological properties, and will contribute to the reconstruction of the entire prehistory of the Baltic preterit system. In this article, it will be proposed that Lith. mirė / Latv. miru(ē) is probably descended from the older imperfect, while its aoristic nature led Lith. miršo / Latv. mirsu(ā) to inherit the older aorist stem, and this historical difference may be reflected in their different preterit stems.

Straipsnyje aptariamos svarbiausios dabartinių lietuvių ir latvių kalbų garsinės struktūros skirtybės, mokslinė ir praktinė fundamentinių lyginamųjų instrumentinių garsų tyrimų nauda, trumpai apžvelgiamos galimos tolesnės tokio pobūdžio tyrimų perspektyvos ir uždaviniai. Pietro Umberto Dini savo monografijoje „Baltų kalbų lyginamoji istorija“ (2019) pastebi, kad baltų kalbų sistemose vyksta nepaliaujamas sintetinės struktūros nykimas, mano, kad baltų kalbos vystosi suartėjimo link. Tačiau naujausias sinchroninis instrumentinis baltų kalbų garsyno tyrimas šių tendencijų nepatvirtina: lietuvių ir latvių kalbų garsinė struktūra vis dar laikytina pakankamai skirtinga (Urbanavičiene, Indričāne, Jaroslavienė, Grigorjevs 2019, 286). Straipsnyje išryškinant tam tikrus tiriamųjų bendrinių kalbų garsyno panašumus ir skirtumus remiamasi naujausiais sinchroniniais lyginamaisiais baltų kalbų balsių ir priebalsių bei koartikuliacijos tyrimais – serijos „Baltų kalbų garsynas XXI a. pradžioje“ kolektyvinėmis e. monografijomis (Jaroslavienė, Grigorjevs, Urbanavičienė, Indričāne 2019; Urbanavičienė, Indričāne, Jaroslavienė, Grigorjevs 2019), kuriose lietuvių ir latvių kalbų garsai instrumentiškai ištirti ir aprašyti pagal tuos pačius principus. Tai puikus pagrindas toliau tęsti instrumentinį dabartinių baltų kalbų garsyno tyrimą (ir kalbėti apie jų svarbą) kitais aktualiais aspektais ir perspektyvomis (tokių naujų nelyginamųjų tyrimų jau esama, plg. Ledichova 2020), aktualizuoti praktinę tokių tyrimų ir garso įrašų naudą (pvz., svarbą ir pagalbą mokantis kalbų, nagrinėjant bendrinių kalbų tarties normas ir polinkius, taip pat medicinoje ir kuriant kalbos technologijų bei dirbtinio intelekto įrankius ir priemones), teorijų ir metodų inovacijas bei perspektyvas. The article discusses the most important differences in the sound structure of contemporary Lithuanian and Latvian standard languages, scientific and practical benefits of a fundamental comparative instrumental sound research, reviews possible further innovations in theories and methods of acoustic and articulatory phonetics and phonology, and perspectives as well as tasks of such research. In his monograph Comparative History of the Baltic Languages (2019), Pietro Umberto Dini observes that there is a constant decline in the synthetic structure in the Baltic language systems, most notably as a reduction of the flexural forms of the noun and verb. He argues that the Baltic languages, like all other Indo-European languages, recognise a structural development: agglutination → synthetic → isolation language. According to the author, the isolation stage of development in the Lithuanian language is just starting, and the isolation structure of the Latvian language is becoming more and more pronounced. Pietro Umberto Dini states that “from the Baltic systems, the Latvian language ‘drifts’ faster in terms of structural development, and the Lithuanian language remains the most morphologically conservative of the current Indo-European languages due to the much slower change” (Dini 2019, 577). The author, based on, for example, the growing tendency in the colloquial Lithuanian language to move the accent to the first syllable (where the accent has long been emphasised in the Latvian language), considers that analogous tendencies are observed in both languages, i.e. the Baltic languages are evolving towards convergence. The data presented in this article and the latest synchronous instrumental studies of the sounds of the Baltic languages do not confirm the convergence trends: the sound structure of the Lithuanian and Latvian languages is still quite different (cf. Urbanavičienė, Indričāne, Jaroslavienė, Grigorjevs 2019, 286; see also Jaroslavienė, Grigorjevs, Urbanavičienė, Indričāne 2019). Both Baltic languages are characterised by quantitative vowel opposition, adjective system (polytonicity), sufficiently simple structure of consonant compounds (e.g. CV and CVC syllable types make up 79% of all Lithuanian syllables, see Karosienė, Girdenis 1994, 40), the same phonological opposition of consonants (voting, modal, local). However, the Lithuanian language has a free accent, while the Latvian language has a fixed accent. One of the most important distinguishing features of the current Baltic languages is palatalization: Lithuanian language is characterised by secondary palatalization and opposition palatalised vs. unpalatalised realisation, which presupposes a twice as large inventory of consonant phonemes in the Lithuanian language and, in comparison with the Latvian language, an accurate, precise articulation of consonants. The article highlights certain similarities and differences in the sound structure of the contemporary Lithuanian and Latvian standard languages based on the latest synchronous comparative research of the Baltic sound system: two scientific monographs of the series Sounds of the Baltic Languages in the early 21st Century (Jaroslavienė, Grigorjevs, Urbanavičienė, Indričāne 2019; Urbanavičienė, Indričāne, Jaroslavienė, Grigorjevs 2019), where the sounds of Lithuanian and Latvian languages are instrumentally studied and described according to the same principles. This is an excellent basis to continue the instrumental study of the contemporary Baltic sounds (and to discuss the importance of the research) on other relevant aspects and perspectives (a few new instrumental non-comparative studies already exist, cf. Ledichova 2020); to update and highlight the practical benefits of such studies and audio recordings (by taking into account the assistance in language learning, examining standard language norms, pronunciation tendencies, the importance in medicine, developing tools and instruments for language technology and artificial intelligence), innovations and perspectives of theories and methods. It is a very important incentive to continue instrumental scientific and practical research of Lithuanian sound methodological innovations, drawing increasingly clear prospects for further research.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama alternatyvi toninių baltų kalbų priegaidžių požymių tyrimo metodika. Keliama darbinė hipotezė, kad kalbamuosius prozodinius elementus akustiniu požiūriu tikslingiau charakterizuoti ne pavieniais parametrais, bet jų kombinacijomis. Suponuojama, kad priegaidė yra veiksnys, sąlygojantis akustinių parametrų sąsajos pobūdį, kurį idealiu atveju galima būtų bandyti apibrėžti matematinėmis funkcijomis (skaičiuoti jų koeficientus). Empirinės medžiagos analizė patvirtina šias prielaidas. Tiek latvių (konkrečiai Valmieros tarmės), tiek lietuvių (šiaurinių žemaičių telšiškių) kalbų priegaides galima atskirti pagal pagrindinio dažnio pagreičio vidurkio (tono staigumu), pagreičio išvestinės (tono tolydumo, ang. Jerk) ir trukmės kombinaciją. Šie rezultatai ne tik palengvina fonetinės priegaidžių struktūros interpretavimą, bet ir suteikia naujų faktinių argumentų tipologiniams baltų kalbų tarmių ryšiams šiuo prozodiniu aspektu įvertinti. Be to, siūlomoji metodinė alternatyva galėtų prisidėti ir prie eksperimentinių tyrimų rezultatų pritaikymo kalbinėms technologijoms (pvz., sintezei). This article provides an alternative way of experimental investigation of lexical tones in the Baltics. The main idea holds on a presupposition that the phonetic basis of prosodic elements in question can be explained in a more appropriate way in terms of a combined analysis of acoustic correlates, rather than a selective one. The lexical tone in this case may be interpreted as a factor which determines the type of acoustic correlation. Ideally, the interdependence of that sort could be defined by mathematical functions. The analysis of the empirical basis provides clear evidence in the favour of such methodological approach. Phonetic data from both, the Latvian (Valmiera) and the Lithuanian (North Žemaitian) subdialects confirmed clearly that the highest level of the tone distinction can be reached by a combined analysis of the pitch slope, pitch jerk and the duration of the long accented vowels. These results have arguably improved the interpretation of the phonetic tone structure and shed a new light on the typological links between the Baltic dialects. Finally, it presupposes that the phonetic nature of prosodic elements in some degree depends on a methodological way we choose for the investigational purposes.

Pirmasis jų virto *-ēm, spėjant, kad *-u- išnykdamas kompensaciškai pailginęs prieš tai ėjusį *-e- („Stango dėsnis“), o *-eh2m virto *-ām dar prokalbėje („išplėstas Stango dėsnis“). Straipsnyje kruopščiai patikrinta abiem teiginiams pagrįsti paprastai pasitelkiama medžiaga, didžiausią dėmesį skiriant ā kamieno acc. sg. ir acc. pl. galūnėms indų-iranėnų bei baltų kalbose ir indoeuropiečių prokalbės žodžio ‘karvė’ paradigmai. Daroma išvada, kad „išplėstas Stango dėsnis“ nėra pagrįstas, o „Stango dėsnis“ taip pat greičiausiai nėra teisingas. Siūlomi alternatyvūs paliudytų formų aiškinimai. The article discusses the development of the Proto-Indo-European sequences *-eum and *-eh2m. The former produced *-ēm, allegedly through loss of *-u- with compensatory lengthening of the preceding *-e- (“Stang’s law”), while *-eh2m allegedly produced *-ām within the proto-language (“extended Stang’s law”). The evidence for both claims is scrutinized, with special emphasis on the acc.sg. and acc.pl. endings of the ā-stems in Indo-Iranian and Baltic and the Proto-Indo-European paradigm of the word for ‘cow’. It is concluded that “extended Stang’s law” cannot be maintained and that “Stang’s law” is probably inorrect, too. Alternative explanations for the attested forms are given.

In Baltic and Finnic languages, the subject and object cases show a similar variation, with nominative or partitive genitive subjects and accusative or partitive genitive objects. The similarities are stronger between Finnic (here represented by Finnish) and Lithuanian, whereas in Latvian the use of the partitive genitive is decreasing. This applies both to affirmative and negated sentences. In this paper, the attention is concentrated upon the Latvian object cases with negation. Examples from literature, both original and translated from Finnish, were presented to a small group of native Latvian speakers living in Finland, with the expectation that the strong similarities between Latvian genitive and Finnish partitive use with negation might affect the choices. However, that did not seem to be the case. The genitive appears to be specialized to express emphatic negation. Genitives of subject in negated existential sentences were compared in translations of Finnish fiction. Partitives are the rule in negated existential sentences in Finnish, and partitive genitives almost to the same extent in Lithuanian. Again, in Latvian the use of the genitive in this function is decreasing. As a rule, it applies to the existential nebūt ‛not to be’, although spoken language tends towards the nominative.

The article “Lithuanica and Prussica deposited in the Berlin State Library of Prussian Heritageˮ consists of a short introduction to the tradition circumstances and some aspects of research as well as of tightly descriptions of almost thirty German, Latin, Prussian or Lithuanian manuscripts, which have been transferred to the Royal Prussian Library in Berlin mainly during the 19th century.

Bretkūno raštuose randama preterito forma /ištira:/ ‘sužinojo’ iki šiol buvo nežinoma tyrėjams. Etimologijos požiūriu, yra susijusi su tranzityviniu preteritu týrė, o formos požiūriu – abu atitinka ssl. otьre (tematinis aoristas) ir trь (sigmatinis aoristas). Šie faktai pagrindžia Danielio Petit (2004) hipotezę apie pailgintojo laipsnio genezę baltų kalbų preterite. Antrojoje šio straipsnio dalyje aptariami kaitybinio (aoristas : imperfektas) ir darybinio (perfektyvas : imperfektyvas) veikslo koegzistencijos pėdsakai lietuvių kalboje. The starting point for our considerations on the development of the Baltic preterite is the Old Lithuanian preterite /ištira:/ ‘found out’, etymologically connected to týrė ‘examined’. In form, /ištira:/ and týrė match the Old Church Slavonic otьre (thematic aorist) and trь (sigmatic aorist). This, in turn, is an argument for the hypothesis proposed by Daniel Petit (2004) on the origin of the lengthening in the Baltic preterite. The second part of this paper discusses the traces of a coexistence of inflected aspect (based on the contrast of the past tenses of aorist : imperfect) and derivational aspect (based on the opposition of perfective : imperfective) in Lithuanian.

Baltų kalbose egzistuoja du būtojo kartinio laiko (preterito) kamienų tipai: *ā-preteritai ir *ē-preteritai. *Ē-preteritai apima kategoriją, vadinamą ilgojo balsio preteritais, kurių šaknims būtajame kartiniame laike būdingas pailgintas vokalizmas. Be to, kai kurių ilgojo balsio preteritų priegaidės varijuoja, plg. lie. beti, 3 sg./pl. pres. bẽria, 2 sg./pl. pret. brė vs. inf. bérti, bẽria, brė. Apie ilgojo balsio preteritų kilmę iškeltos bent dvi hipotezės. Weissas ir Jasanoffas teigė, kad ilgojo balsio preteritai, egzistuojantys ne tik baltų, bet ir kitose indoeuropiečių kalbose, gali būti kilę iš Narten tipo esamojo laiko kamienų imperfekto. Villanueva Svenssono manymu, ilgasis šaknies vokalizmas susidarė, Stango-Larsson dėsniui paveikus baltų prokalbės preterito priesagą *-ìyā- turinčias formas, kurių trumpasis šaknies balsis buvo pailgintas ir gavo cirkumfleksinę priegaidę, o jei buvo ilgasis (ir akūtinis), tuomet tik įgijo cirkumfleksinę priegaidę: *-V-ìyā- / *-̰-ìyā- >*--iyā (>*--ē, plg. *-iyā >*-ē). Antroji hipotezė paaiškina ilgojo balsio preteritų priegaidžių variantus, tačiau ji galioja tik tada, kai priesaga yra kirčiuota, nors, pagal Sieverso-Edgertono dėsnį, dviskiemenės priesagos (-ìyā-) aplinka turi būti nekirčiuota. Straipsnyje tiriama ilgojo balsio preteritų su priegaidžių variantais ir be priegaidžių variantų kirčiavimo priešistorė, ir teigiama, kad jų kilmė ir raida nevienodos. Narten imperfektų refleksai pirmojoje grupėje (su priegaidžių variantais) veikiausiai išrutuliojo oksitonines arba mobilias paradigmas, o antroji grupė (visada su akūtine priegaide) rodo, kad jie išrutuliojo baritonines arba koloninio kirčio paradigmas, kilusias iš aoristo-bendraties kamienų (pvz. lie. gérti, grė *--iyā (>*--ē). The second hypothesis explains the tone variation of the verbs in the root structure ◦ERK-, ◦EUK-, and ◦ĒK- (e.g., sprsti/sprsti, spréndžia/spreñdžia, spréndė/spreñdė ‘to stretch’

Tyrimo tikslas – išsiaiškinti pagal įvairius kriterijus skiriamų Latvijos ir Lietuvos regionų pavadinimų perteikimą ir vartoseną antrąja baltų kalba. Šaltiniais pasirinkti žodynai, enciklopedijos, spauda, turistams skirti Lietuvoje ir Latvijoje išleisti leidiniai, t kiti nemeniniai tekstai – tiek parašyti latviškai arba lietuviškai, tiek versti į latvių ar į lietuvių kalbą. Penkių Latvijos regionų – Kurzeme, Latgale, Sēlija, Vidzeme, Zemgale – pavadinimai pasižymi nemaža perteikimo ir vartosenos įvairove lietuvių kalba. Sistemiškai (ir sinchroniškai) vertinant pirmenybė būtų teikiama Latvijos regiono pavadinimo Kurzeme atitikmeniui lietuvių kalba Kuržemė, turinčiam tam tikrą vartosenos tradiciją. Tačiau pastaruoju metu matyti vietovardžio Kuršas populiarėjimas tiek istoriniame, tiek šiuolaikiniame kontekste. Tradiciniai ir paplitę yra vietovardžio Vidzeme atitikmuo Vidžemė ir Latgale atitikmuo Latgala, taip pat tinkamas yra artimo lietuvių analogui pavadinimo Sėla vartojimas kalbant apie Latvijos teritoriją. Pietų Latvijos regionas Zemgale lietuviškai dažniausiai vadinamas Žiemgala. Vis dėlto retais atvejais pastebėta ir kitokių, ne visada taisyklingų, pavadinimų vartosenos pavyzdžių. Kaip matyti iš latvių šaltinių, Lietuvos regionų pavadinimų perteikimas ir vartosena yra gerokai paprastesnė. Sudėtingiausias iš visų penkių regionų – Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, Mažoji Lietuva, Suvalkija, Žemaitija – pavadinimų yra pirmasis. Dėl pavadinimų pagrindą sudarančių tos pačios reikšmės būdvardžių šaknies priebalsių skirtumo (plg. lietuvių aukštas ir latvių augsts) rastos formos Aukštaitija ir Augštaitija, iš kurių taisyklinga yra ta, kuri panašesnė į originalą. Tiek pavadinimas Dzūkija, tiek Žemaitija kokių nors nuo lietuvių kalbos formų besiskiriančių variantų neturi, o pavadinimas Suvalkija viename iš šaltinių pavartotas su minkštąja latvių kalbos priebalse Suvaļkija. Toks perteikimas tiksliau atspindi tarimą, tačiau kol kas jis neturi vartosenos tradicijos. Sudėtinis regiono pavadinimas Mažoji Lietuva dažniausiai verčiamas pažodžiui Mazā Lietuva, nors pagal analogiją su kitais tokio pobūdžio vietų vardais galėtų būti perteikiamas dūriniu Mazlietuva. Regionų pavadinimų lyginimas parodė, kad Latvijos vietovardžių perteikimas lietuvių kalba, o Lietuvos – latvių kalba kinta ir žodynuose, ir tekstuose. Be to, pastebėta, kad lietuvių kalba sunku perteikti latvių kalbos žodį novads, kuris vartojamas tiek kaip skolinio reģions sinonimas, tiek teritorinio administracinio skirstymo vienetui pavadinti (kalbamąja reikšme tiktų lietuviškas ekvivalentas nuovadas). The aim of the research is to find out the rendering and usage of Latvian and Lithuanian names of regions, singled out according to various criteria, in the second Baltic language. Dictionaries, encyclopaedias, press issues and information for tourists published in Lithuania and Latvia as well as other non-artistic texts, both written in Latvian or Lithuanian and translated into Latvian or Lithuanian, were chosen as sources for the investigation. The names of the five regions of Latvia, Kurzeme, Latgale, Sēlija, Vidzeme, Zemgale, are characteristic of quite diverse rendering and usage in the Lithuanian language. Systematically (and synchronically) assessing, the priority in giving a Latvian name of the region of Kurzeme the equivalent in Lithuanian Kuržemė as having a particular tradition of usage would be emphasised. However, recently, the growing popularity of the place name Kuršas in both historical and contemporary contexts is observed. Traditional and widespread equivalents are used in the following cases: the place name Vidzeme is rendered as Vidžemė and Latgale as Latgala; moreover, the usage of a Lithuanian equivalent Sėla being close to the name of the Latvian territory is suitable. A region of Southern Latvia, Zemgale, is most often named Žiemgala in Lithuanian. Nevertheless, in rare cases, other instances of the usage of these names, not always correct, were observed. As Latvian sources suggest, the rendering and usage of Lithuanian regions is much simpler. The most difficult name of the five regions, Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, Mažoji Lietuva, Suvalkija, Žemaitija, is the first one. Because of the difference in the consonants forming the basis of the root of the adjective having the same meaning (cf. Lithuanian aukštas and Latvian augsts), the forms Aukštaitija and Augštaitija were found; the form which is more similar to the original is the correct one. Both names Dzūkija and Žemaitija have no other variants differing from a Lithuanian form; and the name Suvalkija was used with a palatal consonant of the Latvian language, Suvaļkija, in one of the sources. Such rendering reflects pronunciation more precisely; however, still it has no tradition of being used. A complex name Mažoji Lietuva is usually translated word by word, Mazā Lietuva, even though, observing the analogy with other names of the same kind, it could be rendered by a compound Mazlietuva. The comparison of the names of regions demonstrates that the rendering of Latvian place names in Lithuanian and Lithuanian place names in Latvian is changing in both dictionaries and texts. Moreover, it is observed that it is difficult to render a Latvian word novads in Lithuanian, since it is used as both a synonym of a borrowing reģions and a name of a unit of territorial administrative division (in a spoken meaning, a Lithuanian equivalent nuovadas would be suitable).

Šis straipsnis savo turiniu ir struktūra siejasi su autoriaus jau aptartais vakarinių pietų aukštaičių vandenvardžiais. 2019 m. bus išleistas kolektyvinis rinkinys, skirtas kalbamojo regiono onimijai. Pateiktame straipsnyje nagrinėjami dar autoriaus netyrinėti Alytaus rajono Simno seniūnijos ir Lazdijų savivaldybės Kapčiamiesčio, Kučiūnų, Noragėlių ir Šventežerio seniūnijų vandenvardžiai (ežerų vardai ir upėvardžiai). Pastarieji vandenvardžiai aptariami atskirai, siekiant atskleisti jų darybos skirtumus. Iš viso morfologiniu ir semantiniu aspektais aptariama 120 vardų (75 ežerų vardai ir 45 upėvardžiai). Atlikus išsamią jau kolektyviniame rinkinyje aptartų 303 vandenvardžių ir šiame straipsnyje pateiktų dar 120 vandenvardžių (iš viso 423 vandenvardžių) analizę, paaiškėjo, kad skirtingų darybos būdų hierarchija yra beveik identiška. Tačiau pabrėžtina, kad ežerų vardų priesaginiai vediniai beveik 50 procentų dažnesni nei upėvardžių, o galūninių ir konversinių upėvardžių vediniai 50 procentų dažnesni nei ežerų vardų vediniai. Nagrinėjant kalbamojo regiono vandenvardžius pasitelkiami ir kitų baltų kalbų bei indoeuropeistikos faktai. The article is contentwise and structurally the continuation of the first paper dealing with the hydronyms of Western South Aukštaitija (Dzūkija). It contains the analyses of 120 hydronyms (75 lake-names and 45 river-names) for the bodies of water in the county (Lith. rajónas) Alytus (municipality [Lith. seniūnija] Simnas [Si]) and in the county Lazdijai (municipalities Kapčiamiestis [Ka], Kučiūnai [Ku], Noragelis [No] and Šventežeris [Šv]). Lake-names and river-names are analyzed separately in order to find possible differences in their structures. The final analysis of the total of 423 names shows that, on the one hand, the hierarchies of the structural types are very similar, but there are also significant differences. In lake-names suffixal derivatives have a share, which is about 50 % bigger than in river-names, whereas, on the other hand, in river-names desinential derivatives and conversions each have a share, which is more than 50 % bigger compared to their numbers in lake-names.

Tam tikrų unikalių Pskovo tarmių ypatumų moksliniai tyrimai pagrindė ypatingą Pskovo tarmių padėtį tarp visų rytų slavų ir rusų tarmių. Pskovo liaudies šnektų rinkimas ir tyrimai leidžia suvokti Pskovo tarmių sinchroninių ir diachroninių santykių su kaimyninėmis kalbomis vaidmenį paribio sąlygomis. Kai kurie unikalūs Pskovo tarmių bruožai išskiria jas iš visų rytų slavų ir rusų tarmių. Daugialypis leksikografinis darbas prie Pskovo tarmių žodyno (Псковский областной словарь с историческими данными) priverčia paaiškinti žodžių kep (kultuvas), vsegli (užlipo, atsisėdo), močiglo (linmarka), podpojachat’s’a (apsijuosti), privedi bulku (atvežk duonos) ir kt. specifinius tarminius bruožus ir pateikti paaiškinimų, kurie keičia visuotinai pripažintus mokslinius sprendimus. Svarbus yra archeologinių duomenų įtraukimas siekiant ištirti, kaip pskoviškių protėviai bendravo su kitų (pirmiausiai baltų ir finougrų) kalbinių sistemų atstovais. The collection and research of the Pskov folk speech have resulted in an understanding of the role of synchronic and diachronic relations of the Pskov dialect to its neighboring languages in the borderzone. Certain unique peculiarities of the Pskov dialect distinguish it from the East Slavic languages and all Russian dialects. The multi-faceted lexicographic work on the Pskov Regional Dictionary with Historical Data compels us to search for the explanation of specific dialectic aspects of certain words (кеп, всегли, мочигло, подпояхаться, приведи булку, etc.) and to find investigational solutions that change established academic judgments. Archaeological data are relevant for the study of the Pskovian ancestors’ contacts with the native speakers of other linguistic systems (Baltic and Finno-Ugrian in the first place). The 20th century has demonstrated that records of the folk speech throughout all stages of preservation must be accurate, as the consideration of even rare facts may lay the foundation of an important discovery and new theoretical conclusions. Lexicography reflects and preserves knowledge of the Pskov dialect’s past and present contacts with the Baltic and Finno-Ugrian people. Results of the academic research of unique aspects of the Pskov dialect (the lack of the second palatalization in bases кеп-, кев-, кед-; unusual consonant blends [гл], [кл]; the peculiar appearance of the sound [х]: мяхо, спрахывать; an exchange of sibilants and fricatives: суба “шуба”, etc.) have justified the special position of the dialect among East Slavic languages and all Russian dialects.

Straipsnyje pirmą kartą lietuvių kalbos trankieji priebalsiai tiriami lokuso lygčių (locus equations) metodu, kuris akustinės fonetikos tyrimuose plačiai taikomas tiek balsių ir priebalsių koartikuliacijos lygiui nustatyti, tiek priebalsių artikuliacijos vietai tirti. Be to, tai pirmasis lyginamasis lietuvių ir latvių kalbų trankiųjų priebalsių tyrimas, atliktas pagal tą pačią metodiką. Straipsnyje pateikiama abiejų baltų kalbų priebalsių akustinė klasifikacija, sukurta remiantis universaliais Tarptautinės fonetikų asociacijos (TFA) sukurtais principais. Abiejų kalbų lokuso lygčių rezultatai lyginami pagal tris kriterijus: balsingumą, palatalizaciją ir artikuliacijos vietą.

Atl as of the B a ltic l a ngu a ge s : from idea to pilot project Dialectologists from Latvian Language Institute of the University of Latvia and the Department of Language History and Dialectology of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, have developed a proposal for a joint project entitled, The Atlas of the Baltic Languages, which is intended to demonstrate the close kinship of these two Baltic languages. A pilot project, supported by a grant from the University of Latvia and Directorate for the Millenium of Lithuania has been carried out between 2006 and 2008 to determine what the form and eventual content of such an atlas might be. In 2009 a summary of work carried out on the pilot project on Atlas of the Baltic Languages, Prospect has been published which includes 12 geolinguistic maps, with commentary in Latvian, Lithuanian and English. The publication also contains in the introduction homage paid to the living and extinct Baltic languages, as well as an overview of the history of the study of dialects in both countries and the characteristics and regional distribution of the dialects of Latvian and Lithuanian. The publication also describes the principles followed in creating these geolinguistic maps and associated commentary. This article describes recent progress made in research on the regional distribution of dialects of both Baltic languages. For more than a century research on the dialects of the Latvian and Lithuanian languages has taken place in parallel, separately gathering data on the various dialects of each respective language. It is, therefore, necessary first to examine, briefly, the histories of the respective geolinguistic research endeavours. The first records of differences between the territorial extents and diversity of Latvian and Lithuanian are to be found in surviving grammars and dictionaries of these languages compiled in the 17th century. The first map showing the geographical reach of the Lithuanian language is to be found in the grammar compiled in 1876 by Friedrich Kurschat. The first geolinguistic map of the Latvian language was published in 1892 by August Bielenstein. The systematic efforts at gathering Latvian and Lithuanian non-material cultural assets date from the second half of the 19th century. A new chapter in the study of Lithuanian and Latvian dialects began in the 1950s after a decision was taken to produce atlases of the two languages. At the end of the 20th century the atlases of the Lithuanian and Latvian language were published. This was the main basis for joint project – The Atlas of the Baltic Languages The maps created in the framework of the pilot project, The Atlas of the Baltic Languages, show the principal grouping of most terms used by the speakers of these two living Baltic languages. An in-depth geolinguistic study of the Latvian and Lithuanian languages could produce important findings in the field of the history of the Baltic peoples. В основу Атласа балтийских языков легли предыдущие геолингвистические исследования и собранные по вопроснику диалектные материалы обоих балтийских языков. В течение более столетия исследования диалектов литовского и латышского языков развивались параллельно. Языковые в диалектные данные были собраны и обработаны в отдельности для каждого языка. Необходимо затем проследить историю геолингвистических исследований диалектов обоих языков. Первые сведения о территориальных различиях латышского и литовского языков были отнесены уже в грамматиках и словарях XVII века. Первую карту распространения литовского языка предложил Фридрих Куршат (Friedrich Kurschat) в изданной в 1876 году грамматике литовского языка. В 1892 году была издана первая геолингвистическиая карта латышского языка, ее автором был священник немецкой национальности Август Биленштайн (August Bielenstein). Во второй половине XIX века в Е вропе собирались этнографические материалы и исследовались местные языковые особенности. В это же время появляются первые программы собирания латышской и литовской нематериальной культуры. Новый период в исследовании латышских и литовских диалектов начался в 50-ые годы XX века, когда было решено издать атласы литовского и латышского языков. В основу Атласа балтийских языков легли изданные в конце XX века диалектологические атласы литовского и латышского языков, составленные в нем карты показывают их общие лексические ареалы.

Atlas of the Baltic Languages: Plant Names of Slavonic Origin The article investigates Slavonic-derived plant names in dialects of the two surviving Baltic languages – Latvian and Lithuanian. Historically, these Slavonisms were originally adopted by small-scale regional dialects, which are now disappearing. In 2009, a pilot study for the Atlas of the Baltic Languages was published. It comprised 12 geo-linguistic maps with Latvian, Lithuanian and English commentaries. 2012 saw the publication, in CD format, of the Atlas ’s first volume: Lexis 1: Flora . The material analysed concerns names for: (1) wild plants, e.g., cornflower, nettle, waybread, milfoil, dandelion, plantain; (2) cultivated plants, e.g., onion, potatoe, garlic, cucumber, Swedish turnip, [winter] wheat; (3) trees (juniper, hazel-tree, pear-tree, plum-tree, cherry-tree, etc.) and words related to a tree (top of the tree, cone, etc.). Borrowed plant names can generally be grouped as follows: 1. Common borrowings located in a wide area in Lithuania and used all over Eastern part of Latvia – the region of Latgale. These usually denote fruits and vegetables, e.g. the potatoe ( Solanum tuberosum ) – Latv. buļve and its variants, buļba and variants, uļbiks / Lith. bulvė and variants, bulbė and variants; or garlic – casnags, casnāgs and variants / Lith. cesnākas, sesnākas and variants. 2. Common borrowings located in wide area in Lithuania and used in some subdialects in Latgale, e.g. Lith. vosilka / Lat. Vasilka ‘cornflower ( Centaurea cyanus )’; Lith. krivaunykas and variants / Lat. kravavņiks and variants ‘yarrow ( Achillea millefolium L.)’. 3. Slavonisms whose origin differs in Latvian and in Lithuanian, e.g. Lat. klevers (< Russ. клевер , Bel. dialectal кл e вер , клев i р / Lith. kaniusina < Bel. канюшына , Pol. koniczyna for ‘clover ( Trifolium )’. The Atlas of the Baltic Languages , reflecting the language contacts, could be an important source for further investigation not only in Baltistics but also in Slavistics and Indo-European comparative linguistics. Исторически эти славянизмы были заимствованы региональными территориальными диалектами, которые в настоящее время исчезают. Связанную с растительним миром лексику представляют названия, обозначающие: 1) дикорастущие растения – например, василек, крапиву, подорожник, тысячелистник, одуванчик, 2) культурные растения – например, лук, картофель, репу, (зимнюю) пшеницу, и 3) деревья (можжевельник, орешник, грушу и др.), а также части деревьев (макушку дерева, шишку). В качестве основных групп заимствованных названий растений можно выделить: 1. Общие заимствования, которые встречаются в широком ареале в Литве и во всей восточной части Латвии – в Латгалии. Обычно это названия овощей и фруктов, например, картофеля (Solanum tuberosum) – лат. buļve и вар., buļba и вар., uļbiks / лит. bulve и вар., bulbe и вар., чеснока: лат. casnags, casnāgs и вар./ лит. cesnākas, sesnākas и вар. 2.
