Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of implants with or without threads representation on the outcome of a two-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis. Materials and Methods: Two-dimensional FE models that reproduced a frontal section of edentulous mandibular posterior bone were constructed using a standard crown/implant/screw system representation. To evaluate the effect of implant threads, two models were created: a model in which the implant threads were accurately simulated (precise model) and a model in which implants with a smooth surface (press-fit implant) were used (simplified model). An evaluation was performed on ANSYS software, in which a load of 133 N was applied at a 30-degree angulation and 2 mm off-axis from the long axis of the implant on the models. The Von Mises stresses were measured. Results: The precise model (1.45 MPa) showed higher maximum stress values than the simplified model (1.2 MPa). Whereas in the cortical bone, the stress values differed by about 36% (292.95 MPa for the precise model and 401.14 MPa for the simplified model), in trabecular bone (19.35 MPa and 20.35 MPa, respectively), the stress distribution and stress values were similar. Stress concentrations occurred around the implant neck and the implant apex. Conclusions: Considering implant and cortical bone analysis, remarkable differences in stress values were found between the models. Dental implant-related infections, which lack effective therapeutic strategies, are considered the primary cause for treatment failure. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) technology has been introduced as a safe and effective modality for enhancing biological responses. However, the PEMF effect on modulating microbial diversity has not been explored. Thus, we tested a miniaturized PEMF biomedical device as a healing component for dental implants. PEMF activation did not alter the chemical composition, surface roughness, wettability, and electrochemical performance. PEMF effectively controlled chronic in vitro polymicrobial microbial accumulation. The in vivo study where devices were inserted in the patients' oral cavities and 16S RNA sequencing analysis evidenced a fivefold or more reduction in 23 bacterial species for PEMF group and the absence of some species for this group, including pathogens associated with implant-related infections. PEMF altered bacterial interactions and promoted specific bacterial pathways. This study aimed to assess the biomechanical behavior of reinforcement materials [cobalt chromium alloy (CoCr) and carbon fiber-reinforced polyether ether ketone (CFR-PEEK)] and their extensions (short: 15 mm and long: 25 mm) of single implant-retained mandibular overdentures (MO-1) by 3D finite element analysis (FEA), comparing them with MO-1 without a framework. Five models (CoCr-Short, CFR-PEEK-Short, CoCr-Long, CFR-PEEK-Long, and no framework) were created using the McNeel Rhinoceros 3D software, version 7.0. Stress distribution analysis by FEA was performed using the Optstruct solver, and a 30° oblique load (100 N) was applied in the anterior region (50 N on each central incisor). Biomechanical behavior was analyzed by overdenture displacement, maximum (MaxP) and minimum principal (MinP) stress, and von Mises stress. The MO-1 model 'without a framework' produced the largest dislocation, MinP stress on the mucosa, and MaxP stress in the cortical bone. Regardless of the extension of the framework, CFR-PEEK had minor MinP stress in the mucosa and lower overdenture displacement. The 'CoCr-Long' and 'CFR-PEEK-Long' models had higher von Mises stress on the implant housing, and MaxP stress on the O'ring nylon conventional implant and overdenture. The 'CoCr-Short' and ' CFR-PEEK-Short' models showed a greater tendency for tension concentration solely in the framework. The incorporation of a framework into MO-1 decreased stress concentration on the overdenture, resulting in lower stress on the attachment, mucosa, implant, and peri-implant bone, irrespective of the material used. The short framework, however, performed better biomechanically in MO-1, and it is therefore the most recommended option. CFR-PEEK showed favorable biomechanical outcomes, and is suggested for reinforcement of MO-1.

Physicochemical modifications of biomaterials have been proposed to overcome bone integration impairment and microbial infections. The magnesium (Mg) incorporation on dental implant surfaces has shown positive results in bone-to-implant contact and in the reduction of microbial colonization. Here, we explored the potential of using different Mg precursors to synthesize coatings via plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on commercially pure titanium (cpTi), aiming to optimize the surface and biological properties. For this, we investigated Mg acetate and Mg nitrate precursors in different concentrations (0.04 M and 0.12 M), using calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) as the base electrolyte for all groups. Coatings with only the CaP base electrolyte were used as the control group. The surfaces were characterized by confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, film thickness measurement, profilometry, wettability, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical behavior, and ion release. For biological analyses, the adhesion (2 h) of Streptococcus sanguinis was evaluated, as well as MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells proliferation at 1 and 3 days, and mineralization of calcium phosphates after 28 days. PEO treatment using different Mg precursors promoted physicochemical modifications of cpTi. The experimental groups MgN 0.04 and MgN 0.12 exhibited higher surface roughness and wettability compared to the other surfaces. Regardless of the Mg precursor, the higher the ion concentration in the electrolyte solution, the higher the Mg atomic concentration on the surfaces. Concerning the electrochemical behavior, the results indicated that the incorporation of Mg in the coatings may enhance the electrochemical performance. Mg treated surfaces did not promote greater bacterial adherence when compared to the control. MgAc 0.04 and MgAc 0.12 coatings displayed improved MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblastic cells proliferation at day 3 compared to other groups. The hydroxyapatite formation on MgAc 0.12 surfaces was higher than in the other groups. Our data indicate that Mg precursor selection positively influences physicochemical and biological properties of coatings. Modern techniques of thin film deposition (e.g., atomic layer deposition [ALD]) have paved the way for the modification of the surface of target substrates with thin films, nanoparticles, or other types of nanomaterials. This novel way can improve the base material's properties and enhance specific properties through adding functionalized groups to the surface. In this study, ALD of silver was conducted on commercially available Type I collagen membrane to improve its bioactivity and promote bone healing. Two different sample groups were studied: pristine collagen and silver-coated collagen via ALD (Ag/Collagen). Chemical and morphological changes of the collagen membrane were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy and the bioactivity of functionalized collagen with silver was studied in vitro and in vivo. Nano-islands of silver were obtained on collagen fibrils with an average diameter of ∼16 nm. Comparison of gingival cells cultured on pristine collagen, and silver-coated collagen, demonstrated that the attained silver nanoparticle size and concentration are below the toxicity level of silver. In vivo assessment in rat model showed the biocompatibility of the Ag/Collagen, and greater new bone formation compared to control. Background: Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) single prostheses on teeth or implants are a viable option to restore edentulous spaces, using crowns. However, a comprehensive study that presents an overview of bibliometric factors related to the characteristics of this type of rehabilitation on teeth or implant is still lacking., Objective: The purpose of this bibliometric study was to assess the review progress of papers in the field of CAD/CAM single prostheses regarding bibliometric parameters of year, framework material, technology, retention, and impression., Material and Methods: Four databases were assessed, and 5 bibliometric parameters were evaluated. An incidence rate ratio (IRR) was applied by using a multiple Poisson regression model (a = .05) to assess the association between single prostheses and each bibliometric parameter., Results: A 25-year bibliometric research was carried out and 1019 studies were evaluated. Of these, 805 papers met the inclusion criteria. Over time, an upward trend was observed in the publication of articles on CAD/CAM single prostheses. Studies using only additive manufacturing had a higher IRR than papers that used both technologies ( P  = .016, IRR = 1.286). Aesthetic materials showed a higher IRR compared with studies that used titanium as framework material ( P  = .012, IRR = 1.258). Cemented prostheses ( P  < .001, IRR = 2.272) and both retentions systems ( P  = .005, IRR = 1.436) exhibited a higher IRR compared to screwed design. Statement of Problem: Information on predicting the measurements of the nose from selected facial landmarks to assist in maxillofacial prosthodontics is lacking., Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the efficiency of machine learning models in predicting the length and width of the nose from selected facial landmarks., Material and Methods: Two-dimensional frontal and lateral photographs were made of 100 men and 100 women. Different eye, nose, and ear landmarks were manually measured on the digital images. Various machine learning regression techniques were validated to confirm the accuracy of the length of the nose (LON), nasal bridge length (NBL), lateral alar width (LAW), and nasal tip protrusion (NTP)., Results: The regression models used in this study to predict the width and length of the nose parameters demonstrated a robust predictive capability, as evidenced by the high coefficient of determination score obtained (greater than 0.95). This coefficient of determination suggested the implemented model was able to effectively capture the underlying patterns and relationships within the data, leading to enhanced efficiency in predicting the outcomes. SHapley Additive ExPlanations values demonstrated that for the men-only and women-only datasets, the measurement of the auricular projection was the most important predictor of the LAW, the ear length was the most significant contributor to the LON, and the angle between the nasal bridge length and the ear length was the most significant contributor to the NBL and NTP. For the combined datasets, the distance between the superior edge of the ear to the line measuring the medial canthus width contributed most to the LON and NBL, the ear length was the most significant contributor to LAW, and the angle between the nasal bridge length and the ear length was the most significant predictor of NTP., Conclusions: All selected algorithms provided precise width and length predictions for all data groups and were highly correlated with the actual value. Titanium (Ti) is an ideal material for dental implants due to its excellent properties. However, corrosion and mechanical wear lead to Ti ions and particles release, triggering inflammatory responses and bone resorption. To overcome these challenges, surface modification techniques are used, including micro-arc oxidation (MAO). MAO creates adherent, porous coatings on Ti implants with diverse chemical compositions. In this context, zirconia element stands out in its wear and corrosion properties associated with low friction and chemical stability. Therefore, we investigated the impact of adding zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ) to Ti surfaces through MAO, aiming for improved electrochemical and mechanical properties. Additionally, the antimicrobial and modulatory potentials, cytocompatibility, and proteomic profile of surfaces were investigated. Ti discs were divided into four groups: machined - control (cpTi), treated by MAO with 0.04 M KOH - control (KOH), and two experimental groups incorporating ZrO 2 at concentrations of 0.04 M and 0.08 M, composing the KOH@Zr4 and KOH@Zr8 groups. KOH@Zr8 showed higher surface porosity and roughness, even distribution of zirconia, formation of crystalline phases like ZrTiO 4 , and hydrophilicity. ZrO 2 groups showed better mechanical performance including higher hardness values, lower wear area and mass loss, and higher friction coefficient under tribological conditions. The formation of a more compact oxide layer was observed, which favors the electrochemical stability of ZrO 2 surfaces. Besides not inducing greater biofilm formation, ZrO 2 surfaces reduced the load of pathogenic bacteria evidenced by the DNA-DNA checkerboard analysis. ZrO 2 surfaces were cytocompatible with pre-osteoblastic cells. The saliva proteomic profile, evaluated by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, was slightly changed by zirconia, with more proteins adsorbed. KOH@Zr8 group notably absorbed proteins crucial for implant biological responses, like albumin and fibronectin. Implantable biomedical devices have found widespread use in restoring lost functions or structures within the human body, but they face a significant challenge from microbial-related infections, which often lead to implant failure. In this context, antimicrobial hydrogels emerge as a promising strategy for treating implant-associated infections owing to their tunable physicochemical properties. However, the literature lacks a comprehensive analysis of antimicrobial hydrogels, encompassing their development, mechanisms, and effect on implant-associated infections, mainly in light of existing in vitro, in vivo, and clinical evidence. Thus, this review addresses the strategies employed by existing studies to tailor hydrogel properties to meet the specific needs of each application. Furthermore, this comprehensive review critically appraises the development of antimicrobial hydrogels, with a particular focus on solving infections related to metallic orthopedic or dental implants. Then, preclinical and clinical studies centering on providing quantitative microbiological results associated with the application of antimicrobial hydrogels are systematically summarized. Overall, antimicrobial hydrogels benefit from the tunable properties of polymers and hold promise as an effective strategy for the local treatment of implant-associated infections. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of glazing denture base resins (heat-polymerized and 3D-printed) on surface, mechanical, and microbiological properties., Materials and Methods: Discs (10 × 3 mm) and bars (64 × 10 × 3.3 ± 0.2 mm) were manufactured using heat-polymerized denture base resin (CT) and 3D-printed denture base resin (Yller [YL], Prizma [PZ] and PrintaX [PX]). These were divided into two groups: unglazed and glazed. Surface roughness (Ra), wettability (contact angle), brightness (GU), and topography (via scanning electron microscopy) were assessed, along with microbiological analysis of dual-species biofilms (Streptococcus mitis and Candida albicans) and Knoop microhardness on discs (n = 10). Flexural strength testing was conducted separately on bars (n = 20). Half of the specimens subjected to surface and mechanical characterizations were thermocycled (10,000 cycles). Mann-Whitney test (p < 0.05) and simple and multiple linear regression analysis (p < 0.20) were employed to evaluate the impact of glazing on denture base resins., Results: The application of glaze reduced roughness by 0.33 µm and water contact angle by 8.47º, while increasing brightness by 21.30 units (p < 0.001) for 3D-printed resins compared to CT. After thermal cycling, roughness and wettability increased, while brightness decreased (p < 0.05). The glaze also increased hardness, with no adverse effects from thermal cycling (p < 0.001), and enhanced flexural strength for PZ compared to CT (p < 0.001). Introduction: Implant failures resulting from peri-implant infections can have substantial consequences, underscoring the urgent need for effective strategies to prevent biofilm formation on implant surfaces. However, despite advancements in antimicrobial surface technologies, significant challenges persist in translating these innovations into clinically viable solutions., Areas Covered: This article provides an overview of the limitations of current treatment protocols and explores the potential of antimicrobial surface treatments for controlling such infections. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of balancing antimicrobial efficacy with biocompatibility and mechanical stability, key factors for long-term implant performance. Finally, we address the main challenges in translating these technologies into clinical practice, including the unpredictability of long-term antimicrobial effects, regulatory compliance gaps, and methodological weaknesses in current research., Expert Opinion: The development of antimicrobial surfaces holds promise for enhancing the longevity of dental implants; however, current modifications face persistent challenges, hindering their translation into the dental implant market. Future advancements should prioritize 'smart' or stimulus-responsive surfaces that can release antimicrobials on demand. This strategy aims to efficiently combat infections while minimizing the risks of cytotoxicity and antimicrobial resistance, potentially leading to more effective and clinically translatable solutions.

Evidence has shown the clear positive effects of nature-based products on biofilm control and improved gingival health. However, most studies have used in vitro models, have tested single natural components, or have not evaluated proteomic changes after treatment. This double-blind, parallel, randomized, and controlled clinical trial evaluated the benefits of a nature-based gel in controlling gingival inflammation and its effects on the proteomic gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) profile. Gingivitis patients were distributed into the following groups: (1) nature-based gel containing propolis, aloe vera, green tea, cranberry, and calendula (n = 10); (2) control-conventional toothpaste (n = 10). GCF was collected and evaluated by means of liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). At 3 months, the groups showed similar clinical benefits ( p < 0.05). A total of 480 proteins were identified across all groups. In a pooled comparison of both groups at both time points, exclusive proteins were identified in the nature-based gel (78) and the control (21) groups. The exclusive proteins identified for the toothpaste mainly acted in wound healing, and those for the nature-based gel mainly acted on immune system processes. The nature-based gel achieved similar clinical outcomes to conventional toothpaste. However, the nature-based gel markedly changed the proteomic profile of GCF after treatment, showing a profile associated with a host response.

Statement of Problem: Implant-retained overdentures are a recognized treatment option. However, a comprehensive assessment of all articles on implant-retained overdentures to identify publication standards such as mean citation and the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) impact factor is lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this bibliometric assessment was to evaluate the association of mean citation and JCR impact factor with bibliometric parameters in articles on implant-retained overdentures., Material and Methods: Articles reporting randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and nonrandomized controlled clinical trials (N-RCTs); case reports and series; retrospective studies; and in silico, in vitro, or systematic reviews in 6 databases were included. Data were extracted, and 2 multiple Poisson regressions analyses were applied (α=.05). The dependent variables were mean citation and JCR impact factor, which were evaluated to identify their association with bibliometric parameters by using prevalence ratio (PR) values., Results: A total of 1369 articles published from 1986 to 2021 were included. The data revealed a high mean citation and high JCR impact factor for RCT, N-RCT, retrospective, and in vitro studies (P<.05). In silico studies presented a high mean citation (P<.001). Senior researchers with a high h-index were more likely to have a high mean citation and publications with a high JCR impact factor (P<.001). Also, senior authors associated with an international network were more likely to have a high mean citation (P=.001). High-income countries had more studies with a high mean citation and JCR impact factor (P<.05). Higher JCR impact factors were associated with articles evaluating only the maxilla or mandible (P<.05). The topics "implant setting" and "macrodesign" were associated with a high mean citation (P<.05)., Conclusions: The publication trends suggest a high mean citation and a high JCR impact factor for clinical designs (RCT, N-RCT, retrospective) and in vitro studies. Nonsurgical therapies have been recommended and employed as a less invasive and cost-effective modality in managing periodontitis. In this context, different therapeutic protocols have been tested in the last decades. Therefore, mapping the scientific trends and patterns provides critical insights into the state of research in the field, which has not been explored for overall nonsurgical periodontitis treatment studies. Articles from 2001 to 2020 were retrieved from the Web of Science database using appropriate terms and keywords. Article selection and data extraction were performed by calibrated examiners. All articles focusing on nonsurgical periodontitis treatment were included. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. 1,519 articles were included. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were the most used design (44.1%), and professional biofilm control was the topic most studied (35.6%). Europe published the most significant number of articles (41.1%). The USA was the country that collaborated more with other countries. Asia (p<0.001), South America (p=0.004), and Oceania/Africa (p=0.016) showed a lower chance to have international collaboration. Studies from North America were more likely to be RCTs than studies from Europe (p=0.050); studies focusing on professional biofilm control (p<0.001) and other topics (p<0.001) were less likely to be evaluated by RCTs. The nonsurgical periodontitis treatment field mainly conducted RCTs, and the topic most explored by all studies was professional biofilm control. International collaboration and conduct of RCTs in this field occurred mainly among high-income countries. Decentralizing scientific resources, making integrative connections globally, and evaluating new topics may improve evidence-based periodontology.

Titanium and its alloys, especially Ti-6Al-4V, are widely studied in implantology for their favorable characteristics. However, challenges remain, such as the high modulus of elasticity and concerns about cytotoxicity. To resolve these issues, research focuses on β-type titanium alloys that incorporate elements such as Mo, Nb, Sn, and Ta to improve corrosion resistance and obtain a lower modulus of elasticity compatible with bone. This review comprehensively examines current β titanium alloys, evaluating their mechanical properties, in particular the modulus of elasticity, and corrosion resistance. To this end, a systematic literature search was carried out, where 81 articles were found to evaluate these outcomes. In addition, this review also covers the formation of the alloy, processing methods such as arc melting, and its physical, mechanical, electrochemical, tribological, and biological characteristics. Because β-Ti alloys have a modulus of elasticity closer to that of human bone compared to other metal alloys, they help reduce stress shielding. This is important because the alloy allows for a more even distribution of forces by having a modulus of elasticity more similar to that of bone. In addition, these alloys show good corrosion resistance due to the formation of a noble titanium oxide layer, facilitated by the incorporation of β stabilizers. These alloys also show significant improvements in mechanical strength and hardness. Finally, they also have lower cytotoxicity and bacterial adhesion, depending on the β stabilizer used. However, there are persistent challenges that require detailed research in critical areas, such as optimizing the composition of the alloy to achieve optimal properties in different clinical applications. In addition, it is crucial to study the long-term effects of implants on the human body and to advance the development of cutting-edge manufacturing techniques to guarantee the quality and biocompatibility of implants.

Statement of Problem: Scientific collaboration provides a suitable strategy for enhancing the exchange of knowledge and technological development. However, the impact of collaboration in oral implantology research between countries and how it has been influenced by the income status of the country has not been previously evaluated., Purpose: The purpose of this bibliometric analysis was to evaluate how collaboration between countries affected oral implant publications and whether patterns of collaboration differ depending on the country's income., Material and Methods: Articles were retrieved from 7 well-established journals whose scope included oral implantology at 5 time points (1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019). Data were extracted, and descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed (α=.05)., Results: A total of 1944 articles were included; of which, 27.5% presented collaboration between countries. In 2009, 2014, and 2019, collaboration between countries was more likely to occur than at previous time points (P≤.005). Corresponding authors with a higher h-index (P<.05) and authors from Europe and North America (P<.001) were more likely to establish international connections. The possibility of collaboration between countries was higher for animal studies (P<.001) and for articles published by Clinical Oral Implants Research (P=.026). Collaborations between high-income and upper-middle- or lower-middle-income countries were more likely to happen in 2014 and 2019 (P<.05), as well as when the number of authors was higher (P=.015), compared with collaboration between high-income countries. With regard to the continent, European articles were less likely to have collaborations with upper-middle- or lower-middle-income countries (P<.001)., Conclusions: The findings revealed that some parameters related to the study, authors, countries, and journals were statistically associated with the presence of collaboration between countries. Statement of Problem: Industry needs scientific knowledge to develop new products and services, and their financial support to dental implant researchers translates into commercial products. Therefore, identifying the relevant factors for a successful industry partnership is important., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide a 20-year bibliometric overview of industry-sponsored studies in implant dentistry to identify possible factors involved in industry partnership motivations., Material and Methods: A hand search of 6 of the most established journals in the implant dentistry field was performed for articles published in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019. Information regarding the continent of origin of the corresponding author, interinstitute collaboration, type and topic of research, and the h-index of the corresponding author was recorded for each included article. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to determine statistical relationship between industry support and exploratory factors (α=.05)., Results: A 6% increase in the chance of industry investment was observed over the years (odds ratio [OD]=1.06; P<.001). Studies from North America (OD=4.87; P<.001) and Europe (OD=3.13; P<.001) were more likely to receive industry funding. Data also revealed a direct relationship between the increasing number of institutions involved in the study and the probability of industry funding (OD=1.21; P<.001). Animal studies (OD=2.26; P<.001) about surgical procedures and prosthodontic topics (OD=1.40; P=.044) stood out for having greater industry support. Statement of Problem: The difference in chemical composition between denture base resin and denture teeth requires the development of bonding protocols that increase the union between the materials., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the impact of different bonding protocols on the bond between heat-polymerized and 3-dimensionally (3D) printed acrylic resin denture bases and acrylic resin prefabricated and 3D printed artificial teeth., Material and Methods: Four types of artificial teeth were evaluated: prefabricated acrylic resin (VITA MFT) and 3D printed (Cosmos TEMP, PRIZMA 3D Bio Denture, and PrintaX AA Temp) bonded to 20×24-mm cylinders of heat-polymerized (VipiWave) and 3D printed (Cosmos Denture, PRIZMA 3D Bio Denture, and PrintaX BB Base) denture bases. Three bonding protocols were tested (n=20): mechanical retention with perforation + monomer (PT1), mechanical retention with perforation + airborne-particle abrasion with 50-µm aluminum oxide + monomer (PT2), and mechanical retention with perforation + Palabond (PT3). Half of the specimens in each group received 10 000 thermocycles and were then subjected to the bonding test at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. The failure type was analyzed and scanning electron micrographs made. Additionally, surface roughness (Ra) and wettability (degree) were analyzed (n=15). ANOVA was used to evaluate the effect of the bonding protocol, and the Student t test was applied to compare the experimental groups with the control (α=.05). For type of failure, a descriptive analysis was carried out using absolute and relative frequency. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate the surface changes (α=.05)., Results: Among the protocols, PT3 with in Yller and PT2 with Prizma had the highest bond strengths of the heat-polymerized denture base and 3D printed teeth (P<.05). When comparing the experimental groups with the control, PT3 and PT2 had greater union with the 3D printed denture base + 3D printed teeth (in Yller), with no difference from the heat-polymerized denture base + prefabricated teeth in acrylic resin. The treatment of the 3D printed tooth surfaces affected the surface roughness of Prizma (P<.001) and wettability (P<.001)., Conclusions: To increase the bond between Yller 3D printed denture base + 3D printed teeth, a bonding protocol including mechanical retention with perforation + Palabond or mechanical retention with perforation + airborne-particle abrasion with aluminum oxide + monomer is indicated. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the level of evidence (LOE) characteristics and associated factors that change over time in three leading prosthodontics journals., Materials and Methods: Articles published in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry (JPD), International Journal of Prosthodontics (IJP), and Journal of Prosthodontics (JP) in 2013 and 2020 were reviewed by eight independent reviewers. After applying exclusion and inclusion criteria, the number of authors, the corresponding author's educational degree, corresponding author's origin in each clinical research article were recorded. The included articles were rated by reviewers according to the level of evidence criteria and proposed level of evidence-associated factors. Descriptive statistics, univariable, and binary logistic regression analysis were performed to investigate dependent variables and potentially associated factors. All independent variables with a significant effect were analyzed by using a multivariable test. The entry and exit alpha level were set at α E  = 0.15. The statistical significance was set at α = 0.05., Results: A total of 439 articles from 3 selected journals for the years studied met the inclusion criteria. The percentages of level 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 articles were 2.7 %, 11.4 %, 9.6 %, 13.4 % and 62.9 %, respectively. Univariable analysis results demonstrated significant associations related to the number of authors (P = 0.005), the corresponding author's educational degree (P = 0.022), and the corresponding author's geographic origin (P = 0.042). Multivariable analysis results demonstrated significant associations related to the number of authors (P = 0.002), and the corresponding author's geographic origin (P = 0.014)., Conclusions: The number of authors, CA degree, and CA origin had a significant association with the LOE of included prosthodontic studies. Titanium (Ti) is widely utilized as an implant material; nonetheless, its integration with bone tissue faces limitations due to a patient's comorbidities. To address this challenge, we employed a strategic approach involving the growth of thin films by spin-coating and surface functionalization with etidronate (ETI), alendronate (ALE), and risedronate (RIS). Our methodology involved coating of Ti cp IV disks with thin films of TiO2, hydroxyapatite (HA), and their combinations (1:1 and 1:2 v/v), followed by surface functionalization with ETI, ALE, and RIS. Bisphosphonate-doped films were evaluated in terms of surface morphology and physical-chemical properties by techniques such as electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The antibacterial potential of bisphosphonates alone or functionalized onto the Ti surface was tested against Staphylococcus aureus biofilms. Primary human bone mesenchymal stem cells were used to determine in vitro cell metabolism and mineralization. Although RIS alone did not demonstrate any antibacterial effect as verified by minimum inhibitory concentration assay, when Ti surfaces were functionalized with RIS, partial inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus growth was noted, probably because of the physical-chemical surface properties. Furthermore, samples comprising TiO2/HA (1:1 and 1:2 v/v) showcased an enhancement in the metabolism of nondifferentiated cells and can potentially enhance the differentiation of osteoblastic precursors. All samples demonstrated cell viability higher than 80%. Addition of hydroxyapatite and presence of bisphosphonates increase the metabolic activity and the mineralization of human bone mesenchymal cells. While these findings hold promise, it is necessary to conduct further studies to evaluate the system's performance in vivo and ensure its long-term safety. Objective: In this article, we analyzed the important categories capable of interfering with the determinants of scientific advancement in the type of study, considering seven leading journals over a 20-year., Methodology: A bibliometric review was performed at the website of well-established implant dentistry journals in five-time points defined to represent a 20-year period of observation. The measures associated with the type of study design were: the country of origin of the article, country income, continent of the corresponding author, inter-institutional collaboration, interdisciplinary collaboration, type of funding, and topic of research. Logistic regression was used in the multiple models to identify the exploratory factors associated with the type of study., Results: From a total of 1,944 articles, 50.6% comprised clinical studies. High-income countries and continents stood out for developing more clinical research than others. Since research funders request more collaborative research, overall clinical studies depended upon more inter-institutional collaboration than the others. Most clinical studies were partly supported by research institutes or universities and by industry. About the research topic, the majority of the clinical and animal studies disclosed surgical procedures., Conclusions: High-income countries and continents are more likely to develop clinical studies in the surgical procedures field. The highest collaborations in terms of the number of institutions and funding sources are more prevalent in clinical research designs. Purpose: To identify the most effective protocol for bonding denture bases and artificial teeth made with different computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials (milled and 3D-printed) and conventional heat-polymerized resins., Materials and Methods: This review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) criteria and registered in the International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews PROSPERO (CRD42021276084). An electronic search was performed independently by two examiners in PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and OpenGrey databases for articles published up to and including December 2021., Results: The electronic search returned 806 articles, and after duplicates were removed, 589 articles remained. Four articles met the eligibility criteria to be included in this study. After evaluating the different combinations of denture base materials and artificial teeth, it was found that IvoBase CAD Bond (Ivoclar Vivadent) was effective for bonding CAD/CAM denture bases to prefabricated acrylic resin teeth, which showed no differences compared to the heat-polymerized resin denture base bonded to prefabricated acrylic resin teeth (χ2: 68.56; I2: 96%; P < .001)., Conclusions: The IvoBase CAD Bond bonding system can be used for the fabrication of CAD/CAM denture bases with prefabricated acrylic resin teeth.

Abutment components (i.e., fixtures associated with oral implants) are essentially made of titanium (Ti), which is continuously exposed to the hash oral environment, resulting in scratching. Thus, such components need to be protected, and surface treatments are viable methods for overcoming long-term damage. Diamond-like carbon (DLC), an excellent protective material, is an alternative surface-treatment material for Ti abutments. Here, we demonstrate that a silicon interlayer for DLC film growth and the pulsed-direct current plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (DC-PECVD) method enables the deposition of an enhanced protective DLC film. As a result, the DLC film demonstrated a smooth topography with a compact surface. Furthermore, the DLC film enhanced the mechanical (load-displacement, hardness, and elastic modulus) and tribological properties of Ti as well as increased its corrosion resistance (16-fold), which surpassed that of a bare Ti substrate. The biofilm formed ( Streptococcus sanguinis ) after 24 h exhibited an equal bacterial load (∼7 Log colony-forming units) for both the groups (Ti and DLC). In addition, the DLC film exhibited good cytocompatibility, owing to its noncytotoxicity toward human gingival fibroblast cells. Therefore, DLC deposition via DC-PECVD can be considered to be a promising protective and cytocompatible alternative for developing implant abutments with enhanced mechanical, tribological, and electrochemical properties.

Statement of Problem: One of the main challenges facing dental implant success is peri-implantitis. Recent evidence indicates that titanium (Ti) corrosion products and undetected-residual cement are potential risk factors for peri-implantitis. The literature on the impact of various types of dental cement on Ti corrosion is very limited., Purpose: This study aimed to determine the influence of dental cement on Ti corrosion as a function of cement amount and type., Materials and Methods: Thirty commercially pure Ti grade 4 discs (19 × 7mm) were polished to mirror-shine (Ra ≈ 40 nm). Samples were divided into 10 groups (n = 3) as a cement type and amount function. The groups were no-cement as control, TempBond NE (TB3mm, TB5mm, and TB8mm), FujiCEM-II (FC3mm, FC5mm, and FC8mm), and Panavia-F-2.0 (PC3mm, PC5mm, and PC8mm). Tafel's method estimated corrosion rate ( i corr ) and corresponding potential (E corr ) from potentiodynamic curves. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) data was utilized to obtain Nyquist and Bode plots. An equivalent electrical circuit estimated polarization resistance (R p ) and double-layer capacitance (C dl ). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis was conducted to analyze the electrolyte solution after corrosion. pH measurements of the electrolyte were recorded before and after corrosion tests. Finally, the corroded surface was characterized by a 3D white-light microscope and scanning electron microscope. Statistical analysis was conducted using either one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's Post Hoc test or Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn's test based on data distribution., Results: Based on cement amount, FC and PC significantly increased i corr in higher amounts (FC8mm- i corr  = 8.22 × 10 -8 A/cm 2 , PC8mm- i corr  = 5.61 × 10 -8 A/cm 2 ) compared to control (3.35 × 10 -8 A/cm 2 ). In contrast, TB3mm decreased i corr significantly compared to the control. As a function of cement type, FC increased i corr the most. EIS data agrees with these observations. Finally, corroded surfaces had higher surface roughness (Ra) compared to non-corroded surfaces., Conclusion: The study indicated that cement types FC and PC led to increased Ti-corrosion as a function of a higher amount. Statement of Problem: The union of the metal removable partial denture framework to the heat polymerized acrylic resin is related to prosthesis longevity. However, methods to enhance this bond are not clear to clinicians and dental laboratory technicians., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to identify which metal surface treatments best increase the bond strength between heat polymerized acrylic resin and removable partial denture alloys., Material and Methods: This review was carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and registered in the International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (CRD42022384926). Electronic searches were carried out independently, by 3 examiners in Medline/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, and in the nonpeer-reviewed literature via ProQuest., Results: The electronic searches resulted in 4143 articles, with 4055 after removing duplicates. After reading the titles and abstracts, 37 articles were selected for reading in full-text version, from which 6 articles were included. All studies evaluated materials for conventional acrylic resin denture base (heat polymerized), processed by water bath, bonded to metal. For the metal framework alloys, cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) alloys were used in 2 studies, titanium (Ti) in 2 studies, and Co-Cr and Ti in the other 2 studies. Different metal surface treatments were used as airborne-particle abrasion with aluminum oxide (particle sizes of 50 µm, 110 µm, and 250 µm) followed by the primer application and the isolated use of the primer, compared to the absence of isolated intervention or airborne-particle abrasion of the metal surface. Among the different primers used, those based on 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) showed the highest acrylic resin-to-metal bond strength values., Conclusions: Airborne-particle abrading the metal with Al 2 O 3 followed by applying a 10-MDP-based primer, increased the bond strength between metal framework alloys and heat polymerized acrylic resin denture base material., (Copyright © 2023 Editorial Council for The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Statement of Problem: Standard-diameter dental implants are not always applicable because of anatomic limitations of the residual ridge. Thus, mini-implants have been increasingly used and offer an alternative. However, data regarding prosthetic complications, maintenance factors, and clinical outcomes are limited., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare prosthetic complications and maintenance events and clinical outcomes in residual ridges rehabilitated with mandibular implant overdentures (IODs) by using standard implants or mini-implants., Material and Methods: Nine electronic databases were searched. Quantitative analyses to measure the risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) were applied. Those methods were used to assess prosthetic complications and maintenance events (abutment adjustments, replacement of retentive element, occlusal adjustment, and overdenture fracture) and clinical outcomes related to postoperative pain, probing depth (PD), plaque index (PI), marginal bone loss (MBL), and implant survival rate., Results: Altogether, 7 publications were selected. Mini-implants presented reduced abutment adjustments (RR 0.23 [0.07, 0.73], P=.01), replacement of retentive element (RR 0.41 [0.31, 0.54], P<.001), occlusal adjustment (RR 0.53 [0.31, 0.91], P=.02), and overdenture fracture (RR 0.46 [0.23, 0.94], P=.03) compared with standard implants. Additionally, mini-implants presented lower values for PI at 6 months (SMD -0.27 [-0.47, -0.08], P=.006) and 12 months (SMD -0.25 [-0.46, -0.05], P=.01). No additional tangible differences were noted., Conclusions: Mini-implants might be an alternative choice based on the number of prosthetic complications and maintenance events. Aim: Clinically relevant in-vitro biofilm models are essential and valuable tools for mechanistically dissecting the etiopathogenesis of infectious diseases and test new antimicrobial therapies. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop and test a clinically relevant in-vitro oral polymicrobial biofilm model that mimics implant-related infections in terms of microbial profile., Methods and Results: For this purpose, 24-well plate system was used to model oral biofilms, using three different microbial inoculums to grow in-vitro biofilms: (1) human saliva from periodontally healthy patients; (2) saliva as in inoculum 1 + Porphyromonas gingivalis strain; and (3) supra and subgingival biofilm collected from peri-implant sites of patients diagnosed with peri-implantitis. Biofilms were grown to represent the dynamic transition from an aerobic to anaerobic community profile. Subsequently, biofilms were collected after each phase and evaluated for microbiological composition, microbial counts, biofilm biomass, structure, and susceptibility to chlorhexidine (CHX). Results showed higher live cell count (P < .05) for biofilms developed from patients' biofilm inoculum, but biomass volume, dry weight, and microbiological composition were similar among groups (P > .05). Interestingly, according to the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization results, the biofilm developed from stimulated human saliva exhibited a microbial composition more similar to the clinical subgingival biofilm of patients with peri-implantitis, with proportions of the main pathogens closer to those found in the disease. In addition, biofilm developed using saliva as inoculum was shown to be susceptible to CHX with significant reduction in bacteria compared with biofilms without exposure to CHX (P < .05)., Conclusion: The findings suggested that the in-vitro polymicrobial biofilm developed from human saliva as inoculum is a suitable model and clinically relevant tool for mimicking the microbial composition of implant-related infections., (© The Author(s) 2023. Statement of Problem: An effective bond between a denture lining material and the denture base resin is necessary for proper function. Regarding the new technologies for manufacturing denture bases, a systematic search of the literature on this topic is lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the bond strength between denture lining material and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) denture base resin (milled and 3-dimensionally printed) versus conventional denture base resin., Material and Methods: Electronic databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science) were independently searched by 4 researchers for relevant studies published up to April 2023. The population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (PICO) question was: "Comparing conventional and CAD-CAM (milled and 3-dimensionally printed) denture base materials, which promote greater bond strength when associated with denture lining material?" A meta-analysis was performed based on mean ±standard deviation bond strength values between denture base resins and denture lining material with 95% confidence intervals., Results: Five in vitro studies were included. For bond strength, no difference was noted between conventional and milled denture base resin (confidence interval: -0.99 [-2.17 to 0.20]; heterogeneity: t 2 =0.57; Chi 2 :4.57; I 2 =78%; P=.10), and conventional resin had better values compared with those of 3-dimensionally (3D) printed (confidence interval: 3.03 [2.40-3.66]; heterogeneity: t 2 =0.00; Chi 2 :0.56; I 2 =0%; P<.001) when relined with soft materials. The milled denture base resin was better than the conventional (confidence interval: -0.85 [-1.33 to -0.38]; heterogeneity: Chi 2 :28.87; I 2 =93%; P<.001), with no difference between 3D printed and conventional (confidence interval: 0.18 [-4.23 to 4.59]; heterogeneity: t 2 =16.51; Chi 2 :130.99; I 2 =98%; P=.94) for hard liners., Conclusions: The bond strength between resins for milled CAD-CAM denture bases and denture lining material was similar to that of conventional denture base resin, regardless of the consistency of the denture lining material. Statement of Problem: Implant overdentures have been widely used as a treatment option for edentulous patients. However, the development of implants, aside from commercial growth, requires funding assistance to determine scientific reliability and clinical applications. Nonetheless, bibliometric studies in the implant overdenture field are lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this bibliometric analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of funding and its bibliometric associated parameters according to the financial assistance granted and the implant overdenture documentation over time., Material and Methods: Six databases were assessed, and 12 bibliometric parameters related to the economy, geographical origin, publication details, and corresponding author metrics were recorded. An incidence rate ratio was applied by using a multiple Poisson regression model (α=.05) to assess the association between funding and each bibliometric parameter., Results: In total, 1369 studies published between 1986 and 2021 were assessed bibliometrically. The prevalence of funded studies was 34.8% (n=477). The parameter associated with the presence of funding was country income (P<.01), with those having a high and upper-middle income being more funded than those with a lower-middle and low income. Oceania and South America were the continents more frequently funded (P<.05), with Africa being the least frequent. Randomized and nonrandomized controlled trials, in vitro studies, and in silico studies were more funded (P<.001) than case reports and series. Stud and ball attachment systems were more funded (P<.01) than studies with more than 1 retention system. Funding increased over time (P<.01), and corresponding authors with a higher h-index had more studies funded (P<.05)., Conclusions: The number of funded studies on implant overdentures increased over the years. Statement of Problem: Recent evidence suggests that toothpaste containing 0.3% triclosan (TCS) is more effective than regular toothpaste in improving clinical periodontal conditions. However, a consensus on whether TCS favors a healthy peri-implant environment is limited., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials was to determine the effects of TCS-containing toothpaste on dental implant health based on clinical, immunological, and microbiological parameters, as well as on reported adverse events., Material and Methods: Clinical studies comparing peri-implant conditions in participants by using TCS toothpaste versus conventional fluoride toothpaste (control) were extracted from 9 databases. The studies were assessed with the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized clinical trials (RoB 2). Datasets for bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), osteo-immunoinflammatory mediators, and bacterial load were plotted, and the standard mean difference (SMD) quantitative analysis was applied by using the Rev Man 5.3 software program. Adverse effects reported by the studies were also tabulated. The certainty of evidence was assessed by using the grading of recommendations assessment, development, and evaluation approach., Results: Six studies were included in the meta-analyses. BOP was higher in the control group than in the TCS toothpaste group at 3 months (SMD -0.59 [-1.11, -.07] P=.002, I 2 =77%) and 6 months (SMD -0.59 [-0.83, -0.34] P=.009, I 2 =79%). PD (SMD -0.04 [-0.08, -0.00] P=.04, I 2 =0%) was also deeper in the control group versus TCS toothpaste at 6 months (SMD -0.41 [-0.73, -0.10] P=.04, I 2 =77%). CAL, GI, and PI did not differ between groups (P>.05). Among the osteo-immunoinflammatory mediators, IL-10 levels increased, and IL-1β and osteoprotegerin levels decreased in the TCS toothpaste group (P<.05). Microbiological findings found that TCS toothpaste prevented the growth of periodontal pathogens, specifically in up to approximately 20% of the Prevotella intermedia. Adverse effects were not reported after toothbrushing in either group. Statement of Problem: Although polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implant healing abutments have become popular because of their esthetic, mechanical, and chemical properties, studies analyzing oral polymicrobial adhesion to PEEK abutments are lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro and in vivo study was to evaluate oral microbial adhesion and colonization on titanium (Ti) and PEEK healing abutments., Material and Methods: Ti (N=35) and PEEK substrates (N=35) were evaluated in vitro in terms of the initial adhesion (1 hour) or biofilm accumulation (48 hours) of Candida albicans and a polymicrobial inoculum using stimulated human saliva to mimic a diverse oral microbiome. Surface decontamination ability was evaluated after 24 hours of in vitro biofilm formation after exposure to an erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser. Conventional and flowable composite resin veneering on PEEK was also tested for microbial adhesion. In addition, an in vivo model with 3 healthy volunteers was conducted by using a palatal appliance containing the tested materials (3 or 4 specimens of each material per appliance) for 2 days to evaluate the effect of substrate on the microbial profile. Biofilms were evaluated by live cell counts and scanning electron microscopy images, and the microbial profile by Checkerboard deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-DNA hybridization. The t test and Mann-Whitney test were used to compare the groups (α=.05)., Results: PEEK and Ti materials showed similar fungal adhesion (P>.05). Although the PEEK surface limited the initial in vitro polymicrobial adhesion (approximately 2 times less) compared with Ti (P=.040), after 48 hours of biofilm accumulation, the microbial load was statistically similar (P=.209). Er:YAG laser decontamination was more effective on PEEK than on Ti surfaces, reducing approximately 11 times more microbial accumulation (P=.019). Both composite resins tested showed similar microbial adhesion (1 hour). Along with poor implant-bone integration, peri-implant diseases are the major causes of implant failure. Although such diseases are primarily triggered by biofilm accumulation, a complex inflammatory process in response to corrosive-related metallic ions/debris has also been recognized as a risk factor. In this regard, by boosting the titanium (Ti) surface with silane-based positive charges, cationic coatings have gained increasing attention due to their ability to kill pathogens and may be favorable for corrosion resistance. Nevertheless, the development of a cationic coating that combines such properties in addition to having a favorable topography for implant osseointegration is lacking. Because introducing hydroxyl (-OH) groups to Ti is essential to increase chemical bonds with silane, Ti pretreatment is of utmost importance to achieve such polarization. In this study, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) was investigated as a new route to pretreat Ti with OH groups while providing favorable properties for implant application compared with traditional hydrothermal treatment (HT). To produce bactericidal and corrosion-resistant cationic coatings, after pretreatment with PEO or HT (Step 1), surface silanization was subsequently performed via immersion-based functionalization with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) (Step 2). In the end, five groups were assessed: untreated Ti (Ti), HT, PEO, HT+APTES, and PEO+APTES. PEO created a porous surface with increased roughness and better mechanical and tribological properties compared with HT and Ti. The introduction of -OH groups by HT and PEO was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the increase in wettability producing superhydrophilic surfaces. After silanization, the surfaces were polarized to hydrophobic ones, and an increase in the amine functional group was observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, demonstrating a considerable amount of positive ions. Such protonation may explain the enhanced corrosion resistance and dead bacteria ( Streptococcus aureus and Escherichia coli ) found for PEO+APTES. All groups presented noncytotoxic properties with similar blood plasma protein adsorption capacity vs the Ti control. Our findings provide new insights into developing next-generation cationic coatings by suggesting that a tailorable porous and oxide coating produced by PEO has promise in designing enhanced cationic surfaces targeting biomedical and dental implant applications.

Early detection and prediction of bio-tribocorrosion can avert unexpected damage that may lead to secondary revision surgery and associated risks of implantable devices. Therefore, this study sought to develop a state-of-the-art prediction technique leveraging machine learning(ML) models to classify and predict the possibility of mechanical degradation in dental implant materials. Key features considered in the study involving pure titanium and titanium-zirconium (zirconium = 5, 10, and 15 in wt%) alloys include corrosion potential, acoustic emission(AE) absolute energy, hardness, and weight-loss estimates. ML prototype models deployed confirms its suitability in tribocorrosion prediction with an accuracy above 90%. Statement of Problem: The complete denture occlusal scheme may influence clinical performance and patient satisfaction. However, a consensus on which occlusal scheme should be used for complete denture users is lacking. As a result, many dentists choose the scheme based on their preferences and clinical experience., Purpose: The purpose of this review was to assess the methodological quality and summarize the scientific evidence from secondary studies about the influence of occlusal schemes on the clinical performance of and patient satisfaction with complete dentures., Material and Methods: Ten sources were surveyed according to the patient, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO) strategy. Systematic reviews that evaluated the clinical performance and patient satisfaction (O) of rehabilitated edentulous patients with conventional complete dentures (P) under different occlusal schemes (I/C) were included. Methodological quality was assessed by using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 tool by 2 authors independently. The effect of each occlusal scheme in comparison with others was summarized and classified as positive, neutral, negative, or inconclusive based on the conclusions of the systematic review concerning clinical performance and patient satisfaction outcomes., Results: The search led to the inclusion of 10 systematic reviews. Seven were classified as of critically low, 2 as low, and 1 as moderate methodological quality. The following occlusal designs were included and analyzed: bilateral balanced occlusion, lingualized occlusion, canine guidance, group function, and monoplane occlusion. Bilateral balanced occlusion and canine guidance obtained satisfactory results for both outcomes. Lingualized occlusion showed a trend toward better results than other occlusal schemes for normal and resorbed ridges. Group function presented mainly inconclusive results, and monoplane occlusion did not deliver satisfactory outcomes., Conclusions: The present overview concluded that occlusal schemes might interfere with the clinical performance of and patient satisfaction with complete dentures. Lingualized, bilateral balanced, and canine guidance are preferred compared with monoplane occlusion, but lingualized occlusion tends to show better results in some reviews. Background: Antibiotics are the most effective adjuncts in the treatment of periodontitis. However, the benefits of these agents in treating peri-implantitis are still debatable and demand further analysis., Purpose: The aim of this review was to critically appraise the literature on the use of antibiotics to treat peri-implantitis, with the ultimate goal of supporting evidence-based clinical recommendations, defining gaps in knowledge and guiding future studies on this topic., Methods: A systematized literature search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed and Cochrane Library databases for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on patients with peri-implantitis treated by mechanical debridement-only or with adjunctive use of local or systemic antibiotics. Clinical and microbiological data were extracted from the RCTs included. The findings were critically reviewed, interpreted, and discussed. An overview of antibiotic-loaded dental implant materials in peri-implantitis treatment was also provided., Results: Twelve RCTs testing local/systemic antibiotics were included. Although not always statistically significant, all antibiotic-treated groups had greater reductions in mean PD than those treated by mechanical debridement-only. The only clinically relevant antibiotic protocol supported by one RCT with low risk of bias and long-lasting benefits was systemic metronidazole (MTZ). Studies using ultrasonic debridement reported better outcomes. No RCTs to date have tested MTZ-only or with amoxicillin (AMX) as adjuncts to open-flap implant debridement. In vitro/animal studies suggested that biomaterials with antimicrobial properties are promising to treat peri-implantitis., Conclusion: There are insufficient data to support a particular evidence-based antibiotic protocol to treat peri-implantitis using surgical or nonsurgical therapy, but some conclusions may be drawn. Systemic MTZ adjunct to ultrasonic debridement is an effective protocol to improve the outcomes of nonsurgical treatment. Future studies should assess the clinical and microbiological effects of MTZ and MTZ + AMX as adjuncts to optimal nonsurgical implant decontamination protocols or open-flap debridement. Artificial bone grafting materials such as collagen are gaining interest due to the ease of production and implantation. However, collagen must be supplemented with additional coating materials for improved osteointegration. Here, we report room-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) of MgO, a novel method to coat collagen membranes with MgO. Characterization techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and electron beam dispersion mapping confirm the chemical nature of the film. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopies show the surface topography and morphology of the collagen fibers were not altered during the ALD of MgO. Slow release of magnesium ions promotes bone growth, and we show the deposited MgO film leaches trace amounts of Mg when incubated in phosphate-buffered saline at 37 °C. The coated collagen membrane had a superhydrophilic surface immediately after the deposition of MgO. The film was not toxic to human cells and demonstrated antibacterial properties against bacterial biofilms. Furthermore, in vivo studies performed on calvaria rats showed MgO-coated membranes (200 and 500 ALD) elicit a higher inflammatory response, leading to an increase in angiogenesis and a greater bone formation, mainly for Col-MgO500, compared to uncoated collagen. Introduction: Peri-implantitis is the leading cause of dental implant loss and is initiated by a polymicrobial dysbiotic biofilm formation on the implant surface. The destruction of peri-implant tissue by the host immune response and the low effectiveness of surgical or non-surgical treatments highlight the need for new strategies to prevent, modulate and/or eliminate biofilm formation on the implant surface. Currently, several surface modifications have been proposed using biomolecules, ions, antimicrobial agents, and topography alterations., Areas Covered: Initially, this review provides an overview of the etiopathogenesis and host- and material-dependent modulating factors of peri-implant disease. In addition, a critical discussion about the antimicrobial surface modification mechanisms and techniques employed to modify the titanium implant material is provided. Finally, we also considered the future perspectives on the development of antimicrobial surfaces to narrow the bridge between idea and product and favor the clinical application possibility., Expert Opinion: Antimicrobial surface modifications have demonstrated effective results; however, there is no consensus about the best modification strategy and in-depth information on the safety and longevity of the antimicrobial effect. Modified surfaces display recurring challenges such as short-term effectiveness, the burst release of drugs, cytotoxicity, and lack of reusability. Stimulus-responsive surfaces seem to be a promising strategy for a controlled and precise antimicrobial effect, and future research should focus on this technology and study it from models that better mimic clinical conditions.

Barrier membranes are critical in creating tissuecompartmentalization for guided tissue (GTR) and bone regeneration (GBR) therapies. More recently, resorbable membranes have been widely used for tissue and bone regeneration due to their improved properties and the dispensable re-entry surgery for membrane removal. However, in cases with membrane exposure, this may lead to microbial contamination that will compromise the integrity of the membrane, surrounding tissue, and bone regeneration, resulting in treatment failure. Although the microbial infection can negatively influence the clinical outcomes of regenerative therapy, such as GBR and GTR, there is a lack of clinical investigations in this field, especially concerning the microbial colonization of different types of membranes. Importantly, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of biofilm growth and composition and pathogenesis on exposed membranes is still missing, explaining the mechanisms by which bone regeneration is reduced during membrane exposure. This scoping review comprehensively screened and discussed the current in vivo evidence and possible new perspectives on the microbial contamination of resorbable membranes. Results from eligible in vivo studies suggested that different bacterial species colonized exposed membranes according to their composition (collagen, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (non-resorbable), and polylactic acid), but in all cases, it negatively affected the attachment level and amount of bone gain. However, limited models and techniques have evaluated the newly developed materials, and evidence is scarce. This in-situ study aimed to evaluate the chromatic stability, microhardness, and surfacefree energy of chemically activated acrylic resin (CAAR) samples. Eighty CAAR samples were made and each volunteer (n = 20) received two palatal plates with two sides of groups (without and with glaze application). The samples were exposed to two conditions: the control condition (sucrose 30%) and the test condition (sucrose 30% and 0.12% chlorhexidine). The volunteers used the first palatal device (control condition) for seven days and the second palatal device (test condition) for another seven days, with a seven-day break between them. Then, the ΔΕ00, microhardness, and surface-free energy tests were performed. Analysis of Variance and the Tukey test were used (α = 0.05). The control group with glaze showed higher ΔΕ00 compared to the group without the glaze. The test group with glaze had less ΔΕ00 than their respective controls. In both periods, when the glaze was applied, higher microhardness values were found for all groups. Groups with glaze showed lower roughness and higher surface-free energy than groups without the glaze. The values obtained in this study were satisfactory, showing the clinical efficacy of glaze and the use of 0.12% CH for maintaining the physical and mechanical properties of CAAR., (Copyright© 2023 Dennis Barber Ltd.)

To evaluate the feasibility of using a milled polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post and core in endodontically treated teeth with or without a ferrule. Sixty bovine tooth roots were endodontically treated followed by cementation of intraradicular retainers (IR), according to each experimental group: a) non-ferrule glass fiber post (f0FP); b) 2-mm-ferrule glass fiber post (f2FP); c) non-ferrule resized glass fiber post (f0PR); d) 2-mm-ferrule resized glass fiber post (f2PR); e) non-ferrule PEEK post and core (f0PPC); and f) 2-mm-ferrule PEEK post and core (f2PPC). Metal crowns were made and cemented. A periodontal ligament was simulated using polyether. A force was applied to the palatine portion of each sample at 45°, until fracture. Fracture resistance data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Three-dimensional digital models were developed to calculate the tensions formed in the root using finite element analysis. Models of glass fiber posts and PEEK posts and cores were evaluated with or without a ferrule. The results were analyzed by the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The type of IR was not influenced by fracture strength (p = 0.243). There were significant statistical differences among the remaining factors. Ferrule groups had greater fracture resistance, and the failure mode of teeth with a ferrule was more catastrophic than the non-ferrule group. A ferrule increases fracture resistance and influences failure mode; the PEEK post and core did not modify the biomechanics of endodontically treated teeth, and resembled the glass fiber post results. The crack initiation point differed between the ferrule and non-ferrule groups.

We assessed the level of evidence for the presence of new periodontal pathogens by (i) comparing the occurrence of non-classical periodontal taxa between healthy vs. periodontitis patients (Association study); (ii) assessing the modifications in the prevalence and levels of these species after treatments (Elimination study). In the Association study, we compared the prevalence and levels of 39 novel bacterial species between periodontally healthy and periodontitis patients. In the Elimination study, we analyzed samples from periodontitis patients assigned to receive scaling and root planing alone or with metronidazole+ amoxicillin TID/ 14 days. Levels of 79 bacterial species (39 novel and 40 classic) were assessed at baseline, 3 and 12 months post-therapy. All samples were analyzed using Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization. Out of the 39 novel species evaluated, eight were categorized as having strong and four as having moderate association with periodontitis. Our findings suggest strong evidence supporting Lancefieldella rimae , Cronobacter sakazakii , Pluralibacter gergoviae , Enterococcus faecalis , Eubacterium limosum , Filifactor alocis , Haemophilus influenzae , and Staphylococcus warneri , and moderate evidence supporting Escherichia coli , Fusobacterium necrophorum , Spiroplasma ixodetis , and Staphylococcus aureus as periodontal pathogens. Polypyrrole (PPy) is one of the most studied conductive polymers due to its electrical conductivity and biological properties, which drive the possibility of numerous applications in the biomedical area. The physical-chemical features of PPy allow the manufacture of biocompatible devices, enhancing cell adhesion and proliferation. Furthermore, owing to the electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged bacterial cell wall and the positive charges in the polymer structure, PPy films can perform an effective antimicrobial activity. PPy is also frequently associated with biocompatible agents and antimicrobial compounds to improve the biological response. Thus, this comprehensive review appraised the available evidence regarding the PPy-based films deposited on metallic implanted devices for biomedical applications. We focus on understanding key concepts that could influence PPy attributes regarding antimicrobial effect and cell behavior under in vitro and in vivo settings. Furthermore, we unravel the several agents incorporated into the PPy film and strategies to improve its functionality. Our findings suggest that incorporating other elements into the PPy films, such as antimicrobial agents, biomolecules, and other biocompatible polymers, may improve the biological responses. Overall, the basic properties of PPy, when combined with other composites, electrostimulation techniques, or surface treatment methods, offer great potential in biocompatibility and/or antimicrobial activities. Background: Despite the body of evidence supporting the clinical benefits of metronidazole (MTZ) and amoxicillin (AMX) in the treatment of young patients with periodontitis, the microbiological outcomes of this antibiotic protocol have been less explored. This study evaluated the microbiological effects of adjunctive MTZ+AMX in the treatment of young patients with periodontitis., Methods: Subjects with periodontitis Stages III or IV and ≤30 years old were randomly allocated to receive scaling and root planing (SRP) with placebo (n = 15) or with MTZ (400 mg) and AMX (500 mg) three times a day for 14 days (n = 15). Nine subgingival biofilm samples per subject (three samples from each probing depth (PD) category: ≤3, 4-6, and ≥7 mm) were collected at baseline and 3-, 6-, and 12-months post-treatment and individually analyzed for 40 bacterial species by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization., Results: Thirty subjects (15/group) with mean ages 27.6 ± 3.5 (control) and 26.8 ± 3.9 (test) were included. At 12 months post-therapy, the antibiotic group harbored lower proportions of red complex (1.3%) than the placebo group (12.5%) (p < 0.05). SRP + MTZ+AMX was more effective than mechanical treatment in reducing levels/proportions of several pathogens and increasing proportions of Actinomyces species (p < 0.05). Levels/proportions of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans were only reduced in the antibiotic group (p < 0.05). This group also exhibited greater reduction in the number of sites with PD ≥5 mm and higher percentage of subjects reaching the clinical end point for treatment (≤4 sites with PD ≥5 mm) than the control group (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: SRP+MTZ+AMX allowed for establishing a long-term healthier subgingival biofilm community and periodontal clinical condition, than SRP only., (© 2022 American Academy of Periodontology.)

Because nicotine upregulates the growth of most oral bacteria, this in vitro study investigated the antimicrobial effect of chlorhexidine-doped thin film on commercially pure titanium against Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) biofilm supplemented with different concentrations of nicotine (0, 1, and 2 mg/mL). Biofilms were formed on a chlorhexidine-doped thin film on commercially-pure-titanium discs and compared to the control groups. Biofilm viability, total biofilm growth using a spectrophotometer, extracellular polysaccharide content, and pH variations were assessed as dependent variables. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey honest significant difference tests (α=0.05). F. nucleatum biofilm growth was inhibited when exposed to chlorhexidine-doped thin film (p<0.05). Biofilm supplemented with nicotine did not impact the synthesis of EPS on the same type of treatment (p>0.05). The pH values were significantly increased with the increase of nicotine concentration (p<0.05). Chlorhexidine-doped thin film was effective in reducing F. nucleatum biofilm supplemented with nicotine.

The use of saliva as a protein source prior to microbiological and biological assays requires previous processing. However, the effect of these processing methods on the proteomic profile of saliva has not been tested. Stimulated human saliva was collected from eight healthy volunteers. Non-processed saliva was compared with 0.22 μm filtered, 0.45 μm filtered, and pasteurized saliva, by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD039248. The effect of processed saliva on microbial adhesion was tested using bacterial and fungus species and in biological cell behavior using HaCaT immortalized human keratinocytes. Two hundred and seventy-eight proteins were identified in non-processed saliva, of which 54 proteins (≈19%) were exclusive. Saliva processing reduced identified proteins to 222 (≈80%) for the 0.22 μm group, 219 (≈79%) for the 0.45 μm group, and 201 (≈72%) for the pasteurized saliva, compared to non-processed saliva. The proteomic profile showed similar molecular functions and biological processes. The different saliva processing methods did not alter microbial adhesion (ANOVA, p > 0.05). Interestingly, pasteurized saliva reduced keratinocyte cell viability. Saliva processing methods tested reduced the proteomic profile diversity of saliva but maintained similar molecular functions and biological processes, not interfering with microbial adhesion and cell viability, except for pasteurization, which reduced cell viability.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a low-cost, structurally reliable, and environmentally friendly surface modification method for orthopedic and dental implants. This technique is successful for the formation of porous, corrosion-resistant, and bioactive coatings, besides introducing antimicrobial compounds easily. Given the increase in implant-related infections, antimicrobial PEO-treated surfaces have been widely proposed to surmount this public health concern. This review comprehensively discusses antimicrobial implant surfaces currently produced by PEO in terms of their in vitro and in vivo microbiological and biological properties. We present a critical [part I] and evidence-based [part II] review about the plethora of antimicrobial PEO-treated surfaces. The mechanism of microbial accumulation on implanted devices and the principles of PEO technology to ensure antimicrobial functionalization by one- or multi-step processes are outlined. Our systematic literature search showed that particular focus has been placed on the metallic and semi-metallic elements incorporated into PEO surfaces to facilitate antimicrobial properties, which are often dose-dependent, without leading to cytotoxicity in vitro. This study aimed to investigate and compare the color stability and stainability of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restorative materials in their glazed (G) and polished (P) state when exposed to cigarette smoke, as well as after brushing. Three CAD/CAM restorative materials were investigated: lithium disilicate CAD (LD), zirconia (Zr), and Telio PMMA CAD (PMMA), according to their surface finishing and assignment to cigarette smoking exposure or soaking in the saliva (control) group. The color change (∆E) was calculated before and after the intervention performed for all specimens, using the L*a*b values to quantitatively assess the shade differences. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni multiple comparison analysis (α = 0.05). The surface finishing did not influence the materials’ stainability. Color change was noted after smoking, LD and Zr-G and Zr-P had a comparable color change (p > 0.05), while PMMA presented lower ∆E values (p < 0.05). After brushing, all specimens had a significant color change that was high for LD-G and LD-P, and Zr-G, compared with Zr-P and PMMA (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the exposure to cigarette smoke showed that LD, Zr, and PMMA are all susceptible to staining, but brushing decreases surface staining.

Across years, potential strategies to fight peri-implantitis have been notoriously explored through the antimicrobial coating implant surfaces capable of interfering with the bacterial adhesion process. However, although experimental studies have significantly advanced, no product has been marketed so far. For science to reach the society, the commercialization of research outcomes is necessary to provide real advancement in the biomedical field. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the challenges involved in the development of antimicrobial dental implant surfaces to fight peri-implantitis, through a systematic search. Research articles reporting antimicrobial dental implant surfaces were identified by searching PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Embase, and System of Information on Grey Literature in Europe, between 2008 and 2020. A total of 1778 studies were included for quality assessment and the review. An impressive number of 1655 articles (93,1%) comprised in vitro studies, whereas 123 articles refer to in vivo investigations. From those 123, 102 refer to animal studies and only 21 articles were published on the clinical performance of antibacterial dental implant surfaces. The purpose of animal studies is to test how safe and effective new treatments are before they are tested in people. Therefore, the discrepancy between the number of published studies clearly reveals that preclinical investigations still come up against several challenges to overcome before moving forward to a clinical setting. Additionally, researchers need to recognize that the complex journey from lab to market requires more than a great idea and resources to develop a commercial invention; research teams must possess the skills necessary to commercialize an invention.

Copper (Cu)-loaded electrospun membranes were tailored for guided bone regeneration (GBR), targeting the stimulation of innate cells active in bone growth and the prevention of bacterial infections. Functional GBR membranes were produced via an electrospinning set-up using a silk-based solution associated with polyethylene oxide (Silk/PEO - control). Experimental groups were loaded with copper oxide using varying weight percentages (0.05 % to 1 % of CuO). The morphological, structural, chemical, and mechanical properties of membranes were evaluated. Direct and indirect in vitro cytocompatibility experiments were performed with primary human bone mesenchymal stem cells and primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The antibacterial potential of membranes was tested with Staphylococcus aureus and Fusobacterium nucleatum biofilm. CuO was successfully incorporated into membranes as clusters without compromising their mechanical properties for clinical applicability. Increased Cu concentrations generated membranes with thinner nanofibers, greater pore areas, and stronger antimicrobial effect (p < 0.01). Cu 2+ ion was released from the nanofiber membranes during 1 week, showing higher release in acidic conditions. CuO 0.1 % and CuO 0.05 % membranes were able to support and stimulate cell adhesion and proliferation (p < 0.05), and favor angiogenic responses of vascular cells. In addition, detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis determined that amount of the attached biofilm was reduced on the tailored functional Cu 2+ -loaded GBR membrane.
