Abstract

The mechanical behavior of as-cast ZA-27 alloy and hybrid composite reinforced with graphite (Gr) of constant 3% by weight and silicon carbide particle (SiCp) varying from 0-9% by weight in steps of 3% was carried out. Vortex method of production was employed in which thoroughly mixed Gr and SiC particles were poured into the vortex created by means of mechanical stirrer. The melt was cast using a pre-heated permanent mold box. Microstructure showed fine distribution of the reinforcements in the specimen. Tensile and hardness tests were carried out as per ASTM standards. The results reveal that, as the percentage of SiCp was increased, UTS and hardness increased with reduction in ductility.

Abstract

Aluminium based hybrid composite was fabricated by stir casting technique, boron carbide(B4C)and molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) were used as filler materials. Dry sliding wear behavior was studied for various temperature conditions for this compositespecimens were prepared as per ASTM G99-95 standard. The process parameters were Temperature (C), applied Load (N), Velocity (m/s) and Sliding Distances (m). An L27 orthogonal array and analysis of variance were selected to find the effect of process parameters and wear behavior of hybrid metal matrix composites. The effect of process parameters and percentage involvement were studied with Taguchi and ANOVA procedure. Confirmation test was done for optimizing the best and mean of the wear rate and to identify the exact influence of input parameters. The combination of hard B4C and dry lubricants MoS2 reduces the wear loss considerably. SEM images showthe dispersion of reinforcements in matrix material and wear phenomenon of composite material at elevated temperature the sliding distance contributes more to the wear loss. 35. Comparative Performance Analysis of Gr and MoS2Solid Lubricants During High-Temperature Dry Sliding Wear Behavior of Al2618-Based Hybrid MMCs

Abstract

The effect of solid lubricants, viz. MoS2and graphite (Gr) particulate reinforcement, on the dry sliding wear behavior of Al/B4C/MoS2and Al/B4C/Gr hybrid metal matrix composites (HMMCs) was investigated. Composite specimen was fabricated through stir casting route. Dry sliding wear behavior was studied as per ASTM G99-17 standard using pin-on-disk test rig. Taguchi’s L27orthogonal array was used to plan the experimental trials. The obtained results were analyzed using main effect plots and analysis of variance (ANOVA). It was observed that wear rate was found to increase with the increase in wear parameters studied. The variation in wear rate was significant with the increase in temperature and applied load compared to sliding distance and velocity. ANOVA results revealed that wear parameters were statistically significant. Regression models were presented to correlate the wear rate with wear parameters, and established models were found to be adequate and feasible to predict response. The worn surface analysis employed using SEM images revealed that delamination and plastic deformation were dominant on Al/B4C/MoS2hybrid composite. While groove and crater formed due to plowing, delamination and plastic deformation were more prevalent on the worn surface of Al/B4C/Gr hybrid composite. Subsequently, it suggests that Al/B4C/MoS2offers better wear resistance compared to Al/B4C/Gr MMC.

Abstract

House fly Musca domestica L. is a pest of humans, poultry, and livestock across the world. Dependence on chemical insecticides to contain the flies provided varying results and their continued use has led to development of insecticide resistance. Bioactive compounds in plants are an alternative source to manage M. domestica. Lemon grass, Cymbopogon citratus, Stapf essential oil caused fumigant toxicity to eggs (LC501.299 mg/dm3) and adults (16.56 mg/ dm3). The C. citratus EO caused larval repellence. Polyvinylpyrrolidone when used as polymer matrix to load C. citratus at 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 caused toxicity to flies for a longerperiod as compared to use of EO alone. The EO loaded in polymer matrix had a slower dissipation, EO+PVP polymer mixed at 1:3 retained over 80% of EO after 72 hr when exposed to 60oC. EO, whilst EO alone without a dispenser dissipated in 3 hr. The biological effect of C. citratus EO on M. domestica canbe enhanced for a longer period if loaded into a polymer matrix and this would be an effective strategyto manage M. domestica.

Abstract

In the present investigation on fabrication and microstructure of aluminium based hybrid composites. A356 based aluminium matrix material with varying reinforcement percentage from 0 to 9 wt. % in steps of 3 wt. % silicon carbide (SiCp) and fixed quantity of 3 wt. % of graphite (Gr) particles were used in fabrication. The specimens were fabricated by stir-cast method. Heat treatment was carried out for the cast specimen at 540oC for 12 hours and further ageing was carried out at 155ºC for 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours durations. The specimen after heat treatment and ageing were quenched in water at 60oC. The prepared specimens (ascast and aged) were examined using optical microscope to know the particle distribution in the matrix. Hardness and tensile were carried out for as-cast and aged specimen. The results were compared with as-cast and aged specimens. There was a significant improvement in hardness and tensile properties due to increase in the weight percentage of SiCp. The specimen A356-9SiCp-3Gr aged at 9 hrs showed improved hardness, and tensile when compared to other tested specimen. The presence of reinforcements (SiCp and Gr) significantly affects the solid state transition kinetics that improves the properties of composites. The presences of reinforcements in the specimens are evident from the electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis.

Many hypotheses have provided evidence that cigarette smoking induces more genetic changes in genes involved in the development of many cigarette-related diseases. This alteration may be from single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in innate immunity genes, especially the toll-like receptors (TLRs).Objective: In this study, the genotype frequencies of TLR2 and TLR6 in smoking and nonsmoking population were examined.Methods: Saliva samples were collected from 177 smokers and 126 nonsmokers. The SNPs used were rs3804100 (1350 T/C, Ser450Ser) and rs3804099 (597 T/C, Asn199Asn) for TLR2 and rs3796508 (979 G/A, Val327Met) and rs5743810 (745 T/C, Ser249Pro) for TLR6.Results: Results showed that TLR2 rs3804100 has a significant effect in short-term smokers (OR =2.63; P=0.04), and this effect is not observed in long-term smokers (>5 years of smoking). Therefore, this early mutation may be repaired by the DNA repair system. For TLR2 rs3804099, the variation in genotype frequencies between the smokers and control patients was due to a late mutation, and its protective role appears only in long-term smokers (OR =0.40, P=0.018). In TLR6 rs5743810, the TT genotype is significantly higher in smokers than in nonsmokers (OR =6.90). The effect of this SNP is observed in long-term smokers, regardless of the smoking regime per day.Conclusion: TLR2 (rs3804100 and rs3804099) and TLR6 (rs5743810) can be used as a potential index in the diagnosis and prevention of more diseases caused by smoking.
