The study presented was carried out with first-year undergraduate students in Sciences and techniques of physical and sports activities, involved in a course called EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction). The aim was to study the impact of the language of communication, English, on the experience of students during practical work. The study focused on their commitment to learning time, on the nature of what was perceived and meaningful for these students in their environment. Data analysis revealed that the modification of the communication context induced by the use of the English language led the students to pay particular attention to the information and instructions given by the trainer, as well as to the actions of their peers, particularly meaningful and significant for them. The linguistic disturbance provided by the EMI thus led the students to adapt their mode of engagement and their focalizations in the lived situations and to develop an activity of inquiry based not only on interpretations backed by the discourse but on indexical and iconic dimensions linked to the actions of peers.

The aim of this paper, based on a study conducted with a 26-student class engaged in an annual “Arctic Kayak” project, is twofold. The first challenge is to present the dynamics of joint construction, going back and forth between observation analysis and theoretical object. The second is to introduce two new concepts that might benefit the course-of-action research program. The first, “story of experience”, helps designing and conducting observation research to collect and analyze the experience of large groups of actors over a relatively long period of time. Such stories offer a condensed description of students’ individual experiences during the kayak classes, providing multiple angles of analysis. The second concept is “action field”, which is a subset of the “course-of-experience” theoretical object. For an actor and a given unit of time, this corresponds to all elements of its environment to which it attributes characteristics. Analysis of the students’ action fields allowed us to identify evolutions and transformations which are typical of the students’ perceptual judgments during classes. These results clarify the hypothesis of the three processes (in-situation, in-corporation, in-culturation) of appropriation proposed by Theureau.

The aim of this article, based on a study conducted with a class of 26 students engaged in an annual “Arctic Kayak” project, is twofold. The first is to present the dynamics of joint construction, going back and forth between observation analysis and theoretical concept research. The second is to introduce two new concepts that might benefit the course-of-action research program. The first concept, “story of experience”, helps design and conduct observation research aiming to collect and analyze the experience of large groups of actors over a relatively long period of time. Stories of experience offer a condensed description of students’ individual experiences during the kayak classes, providing material that allows multiple angles of analysis. The second concept is that of “action field”, which is a subset of the “course-of-experience” theoretical object. For an actor and a given unit of time, this corresponds to all elements of its environment to which it attributes characteristics. Analysis of the students’ action fields allowed us to identify evolutions and transformations which are typical of the students’ perceptual judgments during classes. Technological innovations contribute to developments in the technical culture of sports. The current field of competitive sailing provides an opportunity to study the development of a technical culture linked to the spread of an innovation in equipment – that of “hydrofoils”, which allow sailboats to “fly” over the water. The objectives of this study were to investigate: (i) the nature and structure of the knowledge of “pioneering” hydrofoil sailors, in relation to the question of flight stability management and control, and (ii) the development of a technical culture specific to hydrofoil sailing. We conducted “experience sharing” interviews with 12 participants recognized for their involvement in the practice or teaching of hydrofoil sailing. The analysis consisted in identifying typical experiences related to flight stability recognition and control, and in the categorization and inter-linking of explanatory elements on flight stability states, from the point of view of the participants’ knowledge. These two sides of the analysis helped to apprehend the emergence of a shared culture within the group of participants. Our results suggest the development of a technical culture of hydrofoil sailing that integrates to a greater extent the emotional dimension of this practice, and highlight the crew's incorporation into a boat that presents the characteristics of an autonomous system.

The aim of this article is to test the fruitfulness of bringing together two research programmes, Course of Action (PRCA) and Distributed Cognition (PRCD), for the study of human-animal interactions. This development of the PRCA towards an “augmented PRCA” aims to raise new research questions, linked to the integration of animal activities and human-animal interactions in the field of practice analysis. This article makes an empirical contribution to the development of this program by analyzing human-horse communication, in particular the interactions between Cadre Noir écuyers and sauteur horses. To study interspecies interactions, we use several theoretical concepts from these two research programs: cultural practice, mutual appropriation-action, and another concept already explored in previous work, namely sensorimotor empathy. We argue that the cultural practice of airs above the ground, shared by the écuyer and the sauteur, is both a condition and a result of sensorimotor empathy, which develops through a process of mutual appropriation-action. This study confirms the relevance of an “augmented” PRCA to account for animal activities and interspecies interactions, and contributes to a better understanding of the latter. It opens up prospects for new empirical studies to be carried out that highlight the development of mutual sensorimotor empathy within other shared cultural practices between humans and animals.

Chemero's concept of sensorimotor empathy offers a relevant introduction to the study of human/non-human relationships. This article proposes an empirical characterization of this phenomenon occurring in human–horse interactions through the notion of 'contact', which is a core concept in the technical tradition of the equestrian world. According to the assumptions of 4E cognition, we approach the notion of contact with a broader meaning than how it is usually defined, i.e.as the connection of the rider's hand with the horse's mouth. We state that contact involves the whole body and that it is not a passive touch but a dynamic one. Contact is intersubjective, meaning that its quality depends on the two agents of the interaction: the human and the horse. Within such an interaction, sensorimotor empathy allows the human and the horse to understand through the body and to fine-tune with each other to bring about 'good contact'.

A current trend in sailing sports is the use of boats equipped with hydrofoils, allowing the boats to “fly” over the water surface. In this situation, the handling of the boat requires fine coordination between the crew members to maintain the precarious flight. The purpose of this case study was to analyze the crew activity on a flying multihull and explore the role of the shared sport equipment in the emergence of coordination between crew members. Data were collected during a training session with a crew of expert sailors. A joint analysis of phenomenological and mechanical data was conducted. The aim of the analysis was to categorize the forms of interactions between crew members, boat and environment. Results showed that collective coordination in the studied situation involves six forms of interaction that are associated with stable, unstable or critical states of the flight. Consequently, we discussed the role played by the crew members, the behavior of the boat and the environment in the collective coordination.

The processes of appropriation of tools, machines, and other kinds of equipment by human beings are often linked to the notions of transparency and incorporation. Sport situations provide appropriate conditions for exploring the interplay between humans and material equipment when users are engaged in a quest for performance. In the present opinion, we discuss the notions of transparency of sports equipment used by athletes, showing that the association between appropriation and transparency is not straightforward. Furthermore, we highlight distinctions between types of sports equipment based on the latter’s behavior in relation to the athlete’s activity. This leads us to suggest three directions of research that should develop a better understanding of the interplay between humans and sports equipment in particular, and more generally the interplay between humans engaged in a quest for performance and their material artefacts.

Technological innovations contribute to developments in the technical culture of sports. The current field of competitive sailing provides an opportunity to study the development of a technical culture linked to the spread of an innovation in equipment – that of “hydrofoils”, which allow sailboats to “fly” over the water. Abstract Glaucoma is an eye condition that leads to loss of vision and blindness if not diagnosed in time. Diagnosis requires human experts to estimate in a limited time subtle changes in the shape of the optic disc from retinal fundus images. Deep learning methods have been satisfactory in classifying and segmenting diseases in retinal fundus images, assisting in analyzing the increasing amount of images. Model training requires extensive annotations to achieve successful generalization, which can be highly problematic given the costly expert annotations. This work aims at designing and training a novel multi-task deep learning model that leverages the similarities of related eye-fundus tasks and measurements used in glaucoma diagnosis. The model simultaneously learns different segmentation and classification tasks, thus benefiting from their similarity. The evaluation of the method in a retinal fundus glaucoma challenge dataset, including 1200 retinal fundus images from different cameras and medical centers, obtained a $$96.76 \pm 0.96$$ 96.76 ± 0.96 AUC performance compared to an $$93.56 \pm 1.48$$ 93.56 ± 1.48 obtained by the same backbone network trained to detect glaucoma. Our approach outperforms other multi-task learning models, and its performance pairs with trained experts using $$~\sim 3.5$$ ∼ 3.5 times fewer parameters than training each task separately. The data and the code for reproducing our results are publicly available.

Equitation in the French tradition is a school of riding that emphasizes harmonious relations between humans and horses. The best-known community is the Cadre Noir of Saumur, whose specialty is the air above the ground (AAG). No study has yet looked at the horse–rider interaction in this specific context. The purpose of this study was to identify and quantify indicators of AAGs based on the empirical perception of the écuyers expressed by a method of self-confrontation interviews. Fourteen training sessions were the subject of phenomenological and biomechanical approaches. Contact, balance, and hoof-beat, decisive for performance quality, were characterized for 49 AAGs, performed by five horses trained by two expert écuyers, with rein tension meters integrated in their double bridle (curb and snaffle reins) and six inertial measurement units fixed on the limbs, sternum, and croup. Their action was characterized by a peak of 65 ± 39 N on the inside curb rein. They considered that their horse was in balance (forehand inclined 13 ± 7° and −12 ± 9° for the hind hand). After the peak, during the 3.3 ± 2 s the horse’s trunk was stable and the écuyers released the contact until the AAG was perceived as satisfactory by the écuyer. The mixed approach allowed a pattern of action to be envisaged for the écuyer based on contact, balance, and hoof-beat in the execution of AAGs. The quantification of rein tension, trunk movements, and acceleration of the four limbs objectified the expert écuyers’ feeling of developing aptitudes for their actions in the human–horse interactions for improved transmission to young écuyers. The mixed approach used in this study has given rise to new training methods that are transferable to other equestrian activities.

In this book, the authors present the latest research results in the multimedia and semantic web communities, bridging the'Semantic Gap'This book explains, collects and reports on the latest research results that aim at narrowing the so-called multimedia'Semantic Gap': the large disparity between descriptions of multimedia content that can be computed automatically, and the richness and subjectivity of semantics in user queries and human interpretations of audiovisual media. Addressing the grand challenge posed by the'Semantic Gap'requires a multi-disciplinary approach (computer science, computer vision and signal processing, cognitive science, web science, etc.) and this is reflected in recent research in this area. In addition, the book targets an interdisciplinary community, and in particular the Multimedia and the Semantic Web communities. Finally, the authors provide both the fundamental knowledge and the latest state-of-the-art results from both communities with the goal of making the knowledge of one community available to the other. Key Features: Presents state-of-the art research results in multimedia semantics: multimedia analysis, metadata standards and multimedia knowledge representation, semantic interaction with multimedia Contains real industrial problems exemplified by user case scenarios Offers an insight into various standardisation bodies including W3C, IPTC and ISO MPEG Contains contributions from academic and industrial communities from Europe, USA and Asia Includes an accompanying website containing user cases, datasets, and software mentioned in the book, as well as links to the K-Space NoE and the SMaRT society web sites (http://www.multimediasemantics.com/) This book will be a valuable reference for academic and industry researchers /practitioners in multimedia, computational intelligence and computer science fields. Graduate students, project leaders, and consultants will also find this book of interest.

Engagement ,Impact ,[SHS.EDU]Humanities and Social Sciences/Education ,Sentiment d'efficacité personnelle ,Auto-évaluation - Abstract
In France, students have a low sense of self-efficacy and are afraid of failure (PISA 2019 report). In order to enable students to have a better judgement of themselves, the school must help them to situate themselves in their learning. Self-evaluation allows the student to look at his or her own practice with the aim of situating himself in his learning without being judged by others on his mistakes. Allowing the student to find his or her way regularly in the learning process will allow him to observe his or her progress, and therefore probably influence his feeling of personal effectiveness. The objective of this study is therefore to show whether or not there is an impact of self-evaluation on students' feelings of self-efficacy.; En France, les élèves ont un faible sentiment d’efficacité personnelle et ont peur de l’échec (rapport PISA 2019).
