Abstract

Paris is experimenting and implementing strategies to increase the capital's resilience and promote climate change adaptation. Major heatwaves have been hitting the French Capital lately (Bador et al., 2017) and have thus focused attention on UHI countermeasures, such as pavement-watering solutions and urban greening. The Oasis Project is one such strategy aiming to transform schoolyards into urban cool islands that would benefit surrounding neighborhoods and their inhabitants during heatwaves.The work presented here focuses on identifying high-priority schoolyards among the 670 city-owned schools. This is conducted using a GIS tool used to identify areas with high cooling potential, which would benefit most from UHI countermeasures. After extracting bare schoolyard from the facilities, we built a cooling indicator based on the ratio of high solar irradiance surface to the whole schoolyard area. We were thus able to identify 38 schoolyards with high cooling potential, 157 with medium cooling potential and 286 facilities with moderate cooling potential, out of the 670 facilities.The methodology can be applied to other cities, and therefore helps set up GIS tools that can provide municipalities with meaningful insight into their urban cooling strategy.

2. Selective area epitaxy of in-plane HgTe nanostrcutures on CdTe(001) substrate

Abstract

Semiconductor nanowires are believed to play a crucial role for future applications in electronics, spintronics and quantum technologies. A potential candidate is HgTe but its sensitivity to nanofabrication processes restrain its development. A way to circumvent this obstacle is the selective area growth technique. Here, in-plane HgTe nanostructures are grown thanks to selective area molecular beam epitaxy on a semi-insulating CdTe substrate covered with a patterned SiO$_{\mathrm{2}}$ mask. The shape of these nanostructures is defined by the in-plane orientation of the mask aperture along the <$110$>, <$1\bar{\mathrm{1}}0$>, or <$100$> direction, the deposited thickness, and the growth temperature. Several micron long in-plane nanowires can be achieved as well as more complex nanostructures such as networks, diamond structures or rings. A good selectivity is achieved with very little parasitic growth on the mask even for a growth temperature as low as $140${\deg}C and growth rate up to $0.5$ ML/s. For <$110$> oriented nanowires, the center of the nanostructure exhibits a trapezoidal shape with {$111$}B facets and two grains on the sides, while <$1\bar{\mathrm{1}}0$> oriented nanowires show {$111$}A facets with adatoms accumulation on the sides of the top surface. Transmission electron microscopy observations reveal a continuous epitaxial relation between the CdTe substrate and the HgTe nanowire. Measurements of the resistance with fourpoint scanning tunneling microscopy indicates a good electrical homogeneity along the main NW axis and a thermally activated transport. This growth method paves the way toward the fabrication of complex HgTe-based nanostructures for electronic transport measurements., Comment: 18 pages and 8 figures. Submitted to Nanotechnology

Abstract

In the $K_r$-Cover problem, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$ one has to decide if there exists a set of at most $k$ vertices whose removal destroys all $r$-cliques of $G$. In this paper we give an algorithm for $K_r$-Cover that runs in subexponential FPT time on graph classes satisfying two simple conditions related to cliques and treewidth. As an application we show that our algorithm solves $K_r$-Cover in time * $2^{O_r\left (k^{(r+1)/(r+2)}\log k \right)} \cdot n^{O_r(1)}$ in pseudo-disk graphs and map-graphs; * $2^{O_{t,r}(k^{2/3}\log k)} \cdot n^{O_r(1)}$ in $K_{t,t}$-subgraph-free string graphs; and * $2^{O_{H,r}(k^{2/3}\log k)} \cdot n^{O_r(1)}$ in $H$-minor-free graphs.

Abstract

The Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) on board the Euclid satellite provides multiband photometry and R>=450 slitless grism spectroscopy in the 950-2020nm wavelength range. In this reference article we illuminate the background of NISP's functional and calibration requirements, describe the instrument's integral components, and provide all its key properties. We also sketch the processes needed to understand how NISP operates and is calibrated, and its technical potentials and limitations. Links to articles providing more details and technical background are included. NISP's 16 HAWAII-2RG (H2RG) detectors with a plate scale of 0.3" pix^-1 deliver a field-of-view of 0.57deg^2. In photo mode, NISP reaches a limiting magnitude of ~24.5AB mag in three photometric exposures of about 100s exposure time, for point sources and with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 5. For spectroscopy, NISP's point-source sensitivity is a SNR = 3.5 detection of an emission line with flux ~2x10^-16erg/s/cm^2 integrated over two resolution elements of 13.4A, in 3x560s grism exposures at 1.6 mu (redshifted Ha). Our calibration includes on-ground and in-flight characterisation and monitoring of detector baseline, dark current, non-linearity, and sensitivity, to guarantee a relative photometric accuracy of better than 1.5%, and relative spectrophotometry to better than 0.7%. The wavelength calibration must be better than 5A. NISP is the state-of-the-art instrument in the NIR for all science beyond small areas available from HST and JWST - and an enormous advance due to its combination of field size and high throughput of telescope and instrument. During Euclid's 6-year survey covering 14000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky, NISP will be the backbone for determining distances of more than a billion galaxies. Abstract

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Abstract

This paper presents the specification, design, and development of the Visible Camera (VIS) on the ESA Euclid mission. VIS is a large optical-band imager with a field of view of 0.54 deg^2 sampled at 0.1" with an array of 609 Megapixels and spatial resolution of 0.18". It will be used to survey approximately 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky to measure the distortion of galaxies in the redshift range z=0.1-1.5 resulting from weak gravitational lensing, one of the two principal cosmology probes of Euclid. With photometric redshifts, the distribution of dark matter can be mapped in three dimensions, and, from how this has changed with look-back time, the nature of dark energy and theories of gravity can be constrained. The entire VIS focal plane will be transmitted to provide the largest images of the Universe from space to date, reaching m_AB>24.5 with S/N >10 in a single broad I_E~(r+i+z) band over a six year survey. The particularly challenging aspects of the instrument are the control and calibration of observational biases, which lead to stringent performance requirements and calibration regimes. With its combination of spatial resolution, calibration knowledge, depth, and area covering most of the extra-Galactic sky, VIS will also provide a legacy data set for many other fields. This paper discusses the rationale behind the VIS concept and describes the instrument design and development before reporting the pre-launch performance derived from ground calibrations and brief results from the in-orbit commissioning. VIS should reach fainter than m_AB=25 with S/N>10 for galaxies of full-width half-maximum of 0.3" in a 1.3" diameter aperture over the Wide Survey, and m_AB>26.4 for a Deep Survey that will cover more than 50 deg^2. Abstract

In 1980, R. Tijdeman provided an on-line algorithm that generates sequences over a finite alphabet with minimal discrepancy, that is, such that the occurrence of each letter optimally tracks its frequency. In this article, we define discrete dynamical systems generating these sequences. The dynamical systems are defined as exchanges of polytopal pieces, yielding cut and project schemes, and they code tilings of the line whose sets of vertices form model sets. We prove that these sequences of low discrepancy are natural codings of toral translations with respect to polytopal atoms, and that they generate a minimal and uniquely ergodic subshift with purely discrete spectrum. Finally, we show that the factor complexity of these sequences is of polynomial growth order $n^{d-1}$, where $d$ is the cardinality of the alphabet.

Abstract

We investigate the decidability of the monadic second-order (MSO) theory of the structure $\langle \mathbb{N};<,P_1, \ldots,P_k \rangle$, for various unary predicates $P_1,\ldots,P_k \subseteq \mathbb{N}$. We focus in particular on "arithmetic" predicates arising in the study of linear recurrence sequences, such as fixed-base powers $\mathsf{Pow}_k = \{k^n : n \in \mathbb{N}\}$, $k$-th powers $\mathsf{N}_k = \{n^k : n \in \mathbb{N}\}$, and the set of terms of the Fibonacci sequence $\mathsf{Fib} = \{0,1,2,3,5,8,13,\ldots\}$ (and similarly for other linear recurrence sequences having a single, non-repeated, dominant characteristic root). Aperiodic order refers to the mathematical formalisation of quasicrystals. Substitutions and cut and project sets are among their main actors; they also play a key role in the study of dynamical systems, whether they are symbolic, generated by tilings, or point sets. We focus here on the relations between quasicrystals and self-similarity from an arithmetical and dynamical viewpoint, illustrating how efficiently aperiodic order irrigates various domains of mathematics and theoretical computer science, on a journey from Diophantine approximation to computability theory. In particular, we see how Pisot numbers allow the definition of simple model sets, and how they also intervene for scaling factors for invariance by multiplication of Meyer sets. 11. Density of group languages in shift spaces

Abstract

The density of a rational language can be understood as the frequency of some "pattern" in the shift space, for example a pattern like "words with an even number of a given letter." We study the density of group languages, i.e. rational languages recognized by morphisms onto finite groups, inside shift spaces. We show that the density with respect to any given ergodic measure on a shift space exists for every group language, because it can be computed by using any ergodic lift of the given measure to some skew product between the shift space and the recognizing group. We then further study densities in shifts of finite type (with a suitable notion of irreducibility), and then in minimal shifts. In the latter case, we obtain a closed formula for the density under the condition that the skew product has minimal closed invariant subsets which are ergodic under the product of the original measure and the uniform probability measure on the group. The formula is derived in part from a characterization of minimal closed invariant subsets for skew products relying on notions of cocycles and coboundaries. In the case where the whole skew product is ergodic under the product measure, then the density is just the cardinality of the subset of the group which defines the language divided by the cardinality of the group. Moreover, we provide sufficient conditions for the skew product to have minimal closed invariant subsets that are ergodic under the product measure. Abstract

Objective To test the effect of proactive home visits by trained community health workers (CHWs) on child survival. Methods We conducted a two arm, parallel, unmasked cluster-randomized trial in 137 village-clusters in rural Mali. From February 2017 to January 2020, 31 761 children enrolled at the trial start or at birth. Village- clusters received either primary care services by CHWs providing regular home visits (intervention) or by CHWs providing care at a fixed site (control). In both arms, user fees were removed and primary health centres received staffing and infrastructure improvements before trial start. Using lifetime birth histories from women aged 15-49 years surveyed annually, we estimated incidence rate ratios (IRR) for intention- to-treat and per-protocol effects on under-five mortality using Poisson regression models. Findings Over three years, we observed 52 970 person-years (27 332 in intervention arm; 25 638 in control arm). During the trial, 909 children in the intervention arm and 827 children in the control arm died. The under-five mortality rate declined from 142.8 (95% CI: 133.3-152.9) to 56.7 (95% CI: 48.5-66.4) deaths per 1000 live births in the intervention arm; and from 154.3 (95% CI: 144.3-164.9) to 54.9 (95% CI: 45.2-64.5) deaths per 1000 live births in the control arm. Intention-to-treat (IRR: 1.02; 95% CI: 0.88-1.19) and per-protocol estimates (IRR: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.87-1.18) showed no difference between study arms. Conclusion Though proactive home visits did not reduce under-five mortality, system-strengthening measures may have contributed to the decline in under-five mortality in both arms. 17. Highly Conductive Tungsten Suboxide Nanotubes

Abstract

We demonstrate a high electron conductivity (> 10^2 S/cm and up to 10^3 S/cm) of tungsten suboxide W18O(52.4-52.9)(or equivalently WO(2.91-2.94)) nanotubes (2 to 3 nm in diameter, ca. micrometer long). The conductivity is measured in the temperature range 120 to 300K by a four probe scanning tunneling microscope in ultra high vacuum. The nanotubes are synthesized by a low temperature and low cost solvothermal method. They selfassemble in bundles of hundreds of nanotubes forming nanowires (ca. micrometer long, few tens nm wide). We observe a large anisotropy of the conductivity with a ratio (longitudinal conductivity/perpendicular conductivity) of ca. 10^5. A large fraction of them (ca. 65 to 95%) shows a metallic like, thermal activation less, electron transport behavior. Few of them, with a lower conductivity from 10 to 10^2 S/cm, display a variable range hopping behavior. In this latter case, a hopping barrier energy of ca. 0.24 eV is inferred in agreement with the calculated energy level of the oxygen vacancy below the conduction band. This result is in agreement with a relative average concentration of oxygen vacancies of ca. 3%, for which a semiconductor to metal transition was theoretically predicted. Abstract

Abstract Background Terrible triad of the elbow (TTE) is a complex dislocation associating radial head (RH) and coronoid process (CP) fractures. There is at present no reproducible anatomic model for TTE, and pathophysiology is unclear. The main aim of the present study was to create and validate an anatomic model of TTE. Secondary objectives were to assess breaking forces and relative forearm rotation with respect to the humerus before dislocation. Methods An experimental comparative study was conducted on 5 fresh human specimens aged 87.4 ± 8.6 years, testing 10 upper limbs. After dissection conserving the medial and lateral ligaments, interosseous membrane and joint capsule, elbows were reproducibly positioned in maximal pronation and 15° flexion, for axial compression on a rapid (100 mm/min) or slow (10 mm/min) protocol, applied by randomization between the two elbows of a given cadaver, measuring breaking forces and relative forearm rotation with respect to the humerus before dislocation. Results The rapid protocol reproduced 4 posterolateral and 1 divergent anteroposterior TTE, and the slow protocol 5 posterolateral TTE. Mean breaking forces were 3,126 ± 1,066 N for the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), 3,026 ± 1,308 N for the RH and 2,613 ± 1,120 N for the CP. Comparing mean breaking forces for all injured structures in a given elbow on the rapid protocol found a p-value of 0.033. Comparison of difference in breaking forces in the three structures (LCL, RH and CP) between the slow and rapid protocols found a mean difference of -4%. Mean relative forearm rotation with respect to the humerus before dislocation was 1.6 ± 1.2° in external rotation. Conclusions We create and validate an anatomic model of TTE by exerting axial compression on an elbow in 15° flexion and maximal pronation at speeds of 100 and 10 mm/min.

Abstract Background Sexual and reproductive empowerment (SRE) is an important determinant of women’s and girls’ health yet measuring it is complex due to cultural and domain-specific variations. This study describes the process of adapting an SRE scale consisting of four domains (self-efficacy; future orientation; social support; and safety) and testing its psychometric properties among Arabic speaking adolescent girls in Lebanon. Methods An SRE scale developed in a Western context was adapted in four steps: (1) reviewing the scale and selecting culturally appropriate domains for translation to standard Arabic; (2) conducting cognitive interviews with 30 11-17-year-old adolescent girls in Lebanon; (3) administering the scale to 339 refugee adolescent girls who participated in an early marriage intervention; and (4) conducting confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the data to assess the scale’s psychometric properties. Results The original model for the 13-item, four-domain adapted scale demonstrated poor fit in CFA. After iteratively removing two items, scale properties were improved, albeit were not optimal. The validity and reliability results for the self-efficacy domain were acceptable. Cognitive interview data revealed that Arab adolescent girls understood self-efficacy in relational terms, recognizing that autonomous decision-making is not necessarily favored but is influenced by parents and family. Conclusions This study presents an effort to customize an SRE scale for use in studies on the health of adolescent girls in an Arab cultural context. Findings from cognitive interviews highlight the importance of taking into consideration relationality in adolescent sexual and reproductive decision-making. The self-efficacy domain in the adapted scale demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties and is recommended for use in health studies to capture SRE.

Abstract

In this paper we investigate the existence of subexponential parameterized algorithms of three fundamental cycle-hitting problems in geometric graph classes. The considered problems, \textsc{Triangle Hitting} (TH), \textsc{Feedback Vertex Set} (FVS), and \textsc{Odd Cycle Transversal} (OCT) ask for the existence in a graph $G$ of a set $X$ of at most $k$ vertices such that $G-X$ is, respectively, triangle-free, acyclic, or bipartite. Such subexponential parameterized algorithms are known to exist in planar and even $H$-minor free graphs from bidimensionality theory [Demaine et al., JACM 2005], and there is a recent line of work lifting these results to geometric graph classes consisting of intersection of "fat" objects ([Grigoriev et al., FOCS 2022] and [Lokshtanov et al., SODA 2022]). In this paper we focus on "thin" objects by considering intersection graphs of segments in the plane with $d$ possible slopes ($d$-DIR graphs) and contact graphs of segments in the plane. Assuming the ETH, we rule out the existence of algorithms: - solving TH in time $2^{o(n)}$ in 2-DIR graphs; and - solving TH, FVS, and OCT in time $2^{o(\sqrt{n})}$ in $K_{2,2}$-free contact 2-DIR graphs. These results indicate that additional restrictions are necessary in order to obtain subexponential parameterized algorithms for %these problems. In this direction we provide: - a $2^{O(k^{3/4}\cdot \log k)}n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm for FVS in contact segment graphs; - a $2^{O(\sqrt d\cdot t^2 \log t\cdot k^{2/3}\log k)} n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm for TH in $K_{t,t}$-free $d$-DIR graphs; and - a $2^{O(k^{7/9}\log^{3/2}k)} n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm for TH in contact segment graphs.

Abstract

Purpose: To implement a framework generating synthetic spectral panoramic images from single energy CT volumes. Using the framework output to compare the synthetic images against experimental spectral panoramic images for cross-verification. Methods: A simulation framework for generating synthetic spectral panoramic images from CT volumes is described. A cone beam CT scan of an anthropomorphic head phantom is used as input. An experimental spectral panoramic image of the same phantom is acquired. Results: The output of the framework of an anthropomorphic head phantom is compared against an experimental spectral panoramic image of the same phantom. The synthetic and experimental spectral panoramic images resemble each other considerably, especially the bone features. In the soft tissue images, there are some deviations, which are a result of the differences between the experimental and synthetic processing pipelines. Conclusions: It is demonstrated that generating synthetic spectral panoramic images from single energy CT volumes is possible. The synthetic images have many similarities with the experimental results, increasing the confidence in the correctness of the information contained within experimental spectral panoramic images and indicating that the synthetic images could be useful in further research.

Abstract

We first survey the current state of the art concerning the dynamical properties of multidimensional continued fraction algorithms defined dynamically as piecewise fractional maps and compare them with algorithms based on lattice reduction. We discuss their convergence properties and the quality of the rational approximation, and stress the interest for these algorithms to be obtained by iterating dynamical systems. We then focus on an algorithm based on the classical Jacobi--Perron algorithm involving the nearest integer part. We describe its Markov properties and we suggest a possible procedure for proving the existence of a finite ergodic invariant measure absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Tertiary Lymphoid Structures (TLS) are lymphoid structures commonly associated with improved survival of cancer patients and response to immunotherapies. However, conflicting reports underscore the need to consider TLS heterogeneity and multiple features such as TLS size, composition, and maturation status, when assessing their functional impact. With the aim of gaining insights into TLS biology and evaluating the prognostic impact of TLS maturity in Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (NSCLC), we developed a multiplex immunofluorescent (mIF) panel including T cell (CD3, CD8), B cell (CD20), Follicular Dendritic cell (FDC) (CD21, CD23) and mature dendritic cell (DC-LAMP) markers. We deployed this panel across a cohort of primary tumor resections from NSCLC patients (N=406) and established a mIF image analysis workstream to specifically detect TLS structures and evaluate the density of each cell phenotype. We assessed the prognostic significance of TLS size, number, and composition, to develop a TLS scoring system representative of TLS biology within a tumor. TLS relative area, (total TLS area divided by the total tumor area), was the most prognostic TLS feature (C-index: 0.54, p = 0.04). CD21 positivity was a marker driving the favorable prognostic impact, where CD21+ CD23- B cells (C-index: 0.57, p = 0.04) and CD21+ CD23- FDC (C-index: 0.58, p = 0.01) were the only prognostic cell phenotypes in TLS. Combining the three most robust prognostic TLS features: TLS relative area, the density of B cells, and FDC CD21+ CD23- we generated a TLS scoring system that demonstrated strong prognostic value in NSCLC when considering the effect of age, sex, histology, and smoking status. This TLS Score also demonstrated significant association with Immunoscore, EGFR mutational status and gene expression-based B-cell and TLS signature scores. It was not correlated with PD-L1 status in tumor cells or immune cells. In conclusion, we generated a prognostic TLS Score representative of the TLS heterogeneity and maturity undergoing within NSCLC tissues. This score could be used as a tool to explore how TLS presence and maturity impact the organization of the tumor microenvironment and support the discovery of spatial biomarker surrogates of TLS maturity, that could be used in the clinic.

35. Predicting poor mental health among older Syrian refugees in Lebanon during the COVID-19 pandemic: a nested cross-sectional study

Abstract

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened pre-existing vulnerabilities among older Syrian refugees in Lebanon, potentially impacting their mental health. The study aims to describe the evolution of poor mental health over time and to develop and internally validate a prediction model for poor mental health among older Syrian refugees in Lebanon.Methods This prognostic study used cross-sectional data from a multiwave telephone survey in Lebanon. It was conducted among all Syrian refugees aged 50 years or older from households that received assistance from a humanitarian organisation. Data were collected between 22 September 2020 and 20 January 2021. Poor mental health was defined as a Mental Health Inventory-5 score of 60 or less. The predictors were identified using backwards stepwise logistic regression. The model was internally validated using bootstrapping. The calibration of the model was presented using the calibration slope (C-slope), and the discrimination was presented using the optimised adjusted C-statistic.Results There were 3229 participants (median age=56 years (IQR=53–62)) and 47.5% were female. The prevalence of poor mental health was 76.7%. Predictors for poor mental health were younger age, food insecurity, water insecurity, lack of legal residency documentation, irregular employment, higher intensity of bodily pain, having debt and having chronic illnesses. The final model demonstrated good discriminative ability (C-statistic: 0.69 (95% CI 0.67 to 0.72)) and calibration (C-slope 0.93 (95%CI 0.82 to 1.07)).Conclusion Mental health predictors were related to basic needs, rights and financial barriers. These allow humanitarian organisations to identify high-risk individuals, organise interventions and address root causes to boost resilience and well-being among older Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Abstract

Abstract: Many studies on family support for the seniors suffer from being cross-sectional, focusing only on financial or material support, and concluding that this support is either declining or increasing without considering the context of the donor and the recipient. This study, conducted in Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso), aims to analyze the evolutions of family support (financial, material, emotional, informational, service) for the seniors. It is a two-year longitudinal study involving 25 families with a senior. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with each senior people and 2 or 3 of their relatives. This study highlights the multifaceted and dynamic nature of family support for the seniors. The results show that financial and material support, mainly provided by children and grandchildren, varies according to available resources and socio-economic contexts. These supports can increase, decrease, or remain stable. Emotional, informational, and service supports, such as assistance with personal hygiene, meal preparation, and accompaniment to medical appointments, are generally provided by cohabiting family members and tend to increase or remain stable, particularly during periods of illness or functional incapacity of the seniors. The dynamics of family support are influenced by various factors, such as the increase in financial resources of caregivers, the marriage of children, cohabitation with the seniors, illnesses, deaths, and the perception of the seniors as vulnerable. Conversely, factors such as the reduction in financial resources of caregivers, inflation, lack of reciprocity, incapacities of caregivers, and family conflicts can decrease these supports. The family remains the main support for the seniors, adapting forms of solidarity according to contexts. The proposed "theory of adaptive solidarities to contexts" stipulates that family support for the seniors and intergenerational solidarity represent perpetual links, constantly adjusting to the needs of donors and recipients. Supports fluctuate according to resources and contexts, demonstrating their adaptive nature rather than a decline. The NISP (Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer) is one of the two Euclid instruments. It operates in the near-IR spectral region (950-2020nm) as a photometer and spectrometer. The instrument is composed of: a cold (135 K) optomechanical subsystem consisting of a Silicon carbide structure, an optical assembly, a filter wheel mechanism, a grism wheel mechanism, a calibration unit, and a thermal control system, a detection system based on a mosaic of 16 H2RG with their front-end readout electronic, and a warm electronic system (290 K) composed of a data processing / detector control unit and of an instrument control unit that interfaces with the spacecraft via a 1553 bus for command and control and via Spacewire links for science data. Abstract

Abstract Complex humanitarian emergencies are a main driver of food and nutritional insecurity. Agricultural interventions are key to improving nutrition and food security, and their positive impacts are well-documented in stable developing countries. However, it is unclear if their positive effects on food security hold in complex emergency settings, too. In this paper, we systematically review empirical articles that apply rigorous designs to assess the causal impacts of agricultural interventions on food security, nutrition, or health outcomes in complex humanitarian emergencies. We only find six articles matching these criteria, which have mixed results on dietary diversity and food security, and little evidence on child nutrition. Our review underscores the need for more rigorous research on the impacts of agricultural interventions in complex humanitarian emergency settings.

Abstract

Abstract Accurately monitoring the extent of freezing in biological tissue is an important requirement for cryoablation, a minimally invasive cancer treatment that induces cell death by freezing tissue with a cryoprobe. During the procedure, monitoring is required to avoid unnecessary harm to the surrounding healthy tissue and to ensure the tumor is properly encapsulated. One commonly used monitoring method is attenuation-based computed tomography (CT), which visualizes the ice ball by utilizing its hypoattenuating properties compared to unfrozen tissue. However, the contrast between frozen and unfrozen tissue remains low. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we show that the contrast between frozen and unfrozen parts of a porcine phantom mimicking breast tissue can be greatly enhanced by acquiring X-ray dark-field images that capture the increasing small-angle scattering caused by the ice crystals formed during the procedure. Our results show that, compared to X-ray attenuation, the frozen region is detected significantly better in dark-field radiographs and CT scans of the phantom. These findings demonstrate that X-ray dark-field imaging could be a potential candidate for improved monitoring of cryoablation procedures.

Abstract

An infinite word generated by a substitution is rigid if all the substitutions which fix this word are powers of a same substitution. Sturmian words as well as characteristic Arnoux-Rauzy words are known to be rigid. In the present paper, we prove that all Arnoux-Rauzy words are rigid. The proof relies on two main ingredients: firstly, the fact that the primitive substitutions that fix an Arnoux-Rauzy word share a common power, and secondly, the notion of normal form of an episturmian substitution (i.e., a substitution that fixes an Arnoux-Rauzy word). The main difficulty is then of a combinatorial nature and relies on the normalization process when taking powers of episturmian substitutions: the normal form of a square is not necessarily equal to the square of the normal forms.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had disruptive effects on all parts of the health-care system, including the continuing education (CE) landscape. This report documents, what has happened in six different CE accreditation systems to CE activities as well as learners. Complete lockdown periods in the first part of the COVID-19 pandemic have inevitably led to reductions in numbers of the then predominant format of education, i.e. onsite in-person meetings. However, with impressive speed CE providers have switched to online educational formats. With regard to learner interactions this has compensated, and in some systems even overcompensated, the loss of in-person educational opportunities. Thus, our data convincingly demonstrate the resilience of CPD in times of a global health crisis and offer important insights in how CPD might become more effective in the future.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) comprises rare inherited disorders of immunity that require definitive treatment through hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) or gene therapy for survival. Despite successes of allogeneic HCT, many SCID patients experience incomplete immune reconstitution, persistent T-cell lymphopenia, and poor long-term outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that CD4+ T-cell lymphopenia could be associated with a state of T-cell exhaustion in previously transplanted SCID patients. METHODS: We analyzed markers of exhaustion in blood samples from 61 SCID patients at a median of 10.4 years after HCT. RESULTS: Compared to post-HCT SCID patients with normal CD4+ T-cell counts, those with poor T-cell reconstitution showed lower frequency of naive CD45RA+/CCR7+ T cells, recent thymic emigrants, and TCR excision circles. They also had a restricted TCR repertoire, increased expression of inhibitory receptors (PD-1, 2B4, CD160, BTLA, CTLA-4), and increased activation markers (HLA-DR, perforin) on their total and naive CD8+ T cells, suggesting T-cell exhaustion and aberrant activation, respectively. The exhaustion score of CD8+ T cells was inversely correlated with CD4+ T-cell count, recent thymic emigrants, TCR excision circles, and TCR diversity. Exhaustion scores were higher among recipients of unconditioned HCT, especially when further in time from HCT. Patients with fewer CD4+ T cells showed a transcriptional signature of exhaustion. CONCLUSIONS: Recipients of unconditioned HCT for SCID may develop late post-HCT T-cell exhaustion as a result of diminished production of T-lineage cells. Elevated expression of inhibitory receptors on their T cells may be a biomarker of poor long-term T-cell reconstitution.

Abstract

An S-adic system is a symbolic dynamical system generated by iterating an infinite sequence of substitutions or morphisms, called a directive sequence. A finitary S-adic dynamical system is one where the directive sequence consists of morphisms selected from a finite set. We study eigenvalues and coboundaries for finitary recognizable S-adic dynamical systems, i.e., those where points can be uniquely desubstituted using the given sequence of morphisms. To do this we identify the notions of straightness and essential words, and use them to define a coboundary, inspired by of Host's formalism, which allows us to express necessary and sufficient conditions that a complex number must satisfy in order to be a continuous or measurable eigenvalue. We then apply our results to finitary directive sequences of substitutions of constant length, and show how to create constant-length $S$-adic shifts with non-trivial coboundaries. We show that in this case all continuous eigenvalues are rational and we give a complete description of the rationals that can be an eigenvalue, indicating how this leads to a Cobham-style result for these systems., Comment: Substantial revisions. 39 pages
