Color centers in diamond are promising platforms for quantum technologies. Most color centers in diamond discovered thus far emit in the visible or near-infrared wavelength range, which are incompatible with long-distance fiber communication and unfavorable for imaging in biological tissues. Here, we report the experimental observation of a new color center that emits in the telecom O-band, which we observe in silicon-doped bulk single crystal diamonds and microdiamonds. Combining absorption and photoluminescence measurements, we identify a zero-phonon line at 1221 nm and phonon replicas separated by 42 meV. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we measure an excited state lifetime of around 270 ps and observe a long-lived baseline that may arise from intersystem crossing to another spin manifold.

Optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy of defect-rich semiconductors is being increasingly exploited for realising a variety of practical quantum sensing devices. A prime example is the on-going development of compact magnetometers based on the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond for the remote sensing of magnetic signals with high accuracy and sensitivity. In these applications, the ODMR-active material is integrated into the overall apparatus to form a self-contained sensor. However, some emerging applications require the sensing material to be in physical contact with an external object of interest, thus requiring an independent readout device. Here we present an ODMR-meter, a compact device specially designed to allow convenient, contactless monitoring of ODMR in a target object, and demonstrate its application to temperature monitoring with NV defects. Our prototype is composed of a handheld readout head (integrating all the necessary optical components and a microwave antenna) and a control box connected to a laptop computer, all made primarily from commercial off-the-shelf components. We test our device using an NV-rich bulk diamond as the object, demonstrate a temperature sensitivity of $10~{\rm mK}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ in static conditions, and demonstrate the feasibility of handheld operation. The limitations to measurement speed, sensitivity and accuracy are discussed. The presented device may find immediate use in medical and industrial applications where accurate thermometry is required, and can be extended to magnetic field measurements.

Lanthanoid-doped Gallium Nitride (GaN) integrated into nanophotonic technologies is a promising candidate for room-temperature quantum photon sources for quantum technology applications. We manufactured praseodymium (Pr)-doped GaN nanopillars of varying size, and showed significantly enhanced room-temperature photon extraction efficiency compared to unstructured Pr-doped GaN. Implanted Pr ions in GaN show two main emission peaks at 650.3 nm and 651.8 nm which are attributed to 3P0-3F2 transition in the 4f-shell. The maximum observed enhancement ratio was 23.5 for 200 nm diameter circular pillars, which can be divided into the emitted photon extraction enhancement by a factor of 4.5 and the photon collection enhancement by a factor of 5.2. The enhancement mechanism is explained by the eigenmode resonance inside the nanopillar. Our study provides a pathway for Lanthanoid-doped GaN nano/micro-scale photon emitters and quantum technology applications.

Purpose Vitrification permits long-term banking of oocytes and embryos. It is a technically challenging procedure requiring direct handling and movement of cells between potentially cytotoxic cryoprotectant solutions. Variation in adherence to timing, and ability to trace cells during the procedure, affects survival post-warming. We hypothesized that minimizing direct handling will simplify the procedure and improve traceability. To address this, we present a novel photopolymerized device that houses the sample during vitrification. Methods The fabricated device consisted of two components: the Pod and Garage. Single mouse oocytes or embryos were housed in a Pod, with multiple Pods docked into a Garage. The suitability of the device for cryogenic application was assessed by repeated vitrification and warming cycles. Oocytes or early blastocyst-stage embryos were vitrified either using standard practice or within Pods and a Garage and compared to non-vitrified control groups. Post-warming, we assessed survival rate, oocyte developmental potential (fertilization and subsequent development) and metabolism (autofluorescence). Results Vitrification within the device occurred within ~ 3 nL of cryoprotectant: this volume being ~ 1000-fold lower than standard vitrification. Compared to standard practice, vitrification and warming within our device showed no differences in viability, developmental competency, or metabolism for oocytes and embryos. The device housed the sample during processing, which improved traceability and minimized handling. Interestingly, vitrification-warming itself, altered oocyte and embryo metabolism. Conclusion The Pod and Garage system minimized the volume of cryoprotectant at vitrification—by ~ 1000-fold—improved traceability and reduced direct handling of the sample. This is a major step in simplifying the procedure.

Negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising magnetic field quantum sensors. Laser threshold magnetometry theory predicts improved NV center ensemble sensitivity via increased signal strength and magnetic field contrast. Here, we experimentally demonstrate laser threshold magnetometry. We use a macroscopic high-finesse laser cavity containing a highly NV-doped and low absorbing diamond gain medium that is pumped at 532 nm and resonantly seeded at 710 nm. This enables a 64% signal power amplification by stimulated emission. We test the magnetic field dependency of the amplification and thus demonstrate magnetic field–dependent stimulated emission from an NV center ensemble. This emission shows an ultrahigh contrast of 33% and a maximum output power in the milliwatt regime. The coherent readout of NV centers pave the way for novel cavity and laser applications of quantum defects and diamond NV magnetic field sensors with substantially improved sensitivity for the health, research, and mining sectors.

Fluorescent nanodiamonds (fNDs) are emerging as important tools for imaging and sensing in biology, which enable the optical detection, for example, of temperature and magnetic fields at the nanoscale. At the same time, their unique physicochemical properties allow fNDs to drastically improve the properties of nanocomposites. Here, we report the integration of fNDs into electrospun poly-ϵ-caprolactone (PCL) fibers and the use of the resulting hybrid material as a nontoxic and multifunctional bioscaffold. We investigate the morphology, size distribution, optical properties, wettability, and biocompatibility of PCL fibers containing 0.2 and 0.4 wt % fNDs and demonstrate the quantum sensing capability of the nanocomposite via optically detected magnetic resonance measurements of the nitrogen-vacancy center in fNDs. We find that the use of ethanol as a cosolvent improves the dispersion of fNDs into PCL fibers and reduces the occurrence of fiber defects. We demonstrate that the PCL/fND scaffold is not cytotoxic for mesenchymal stem cells and even promotes cell adhesion and cell proliferation up to 21 days because of an increase in wettability compared to pure PCL fibers. Our results highlight the immense potential of PCL/fND nanocomposites as smart bioscaffolds for advanced biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, biosensing, and theranostics.

Purpose Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) addresses male sub-fertility by injecting a spermatozoon into the oocyte. This challenging procedure requires the use of dual micromanipulators, with success influenced by inter-operator expertise. We hypothesized that minimizing oocyte handling during ICSI will simplify the procedure. To address this, we designed and fabricated a micrometer scale device that houses the oocyte and requires only one micromanipulator for microinjection. Methods The device consisted of 2 components, each of sub-cubic millimeter volume: a Pod and a Garage. These were fabricated using 2-photon polymerization. Toxicity was evaluated by culturing single-mouse presumptive zygotes (PZs) to the blastocyst stage within a Pod, with several Pods (and embryos) docked in a Garage. The development was compared to standard culture. The level of DNA damage/repair in resultant blastocysts was quantified (γH2A.X immunohistochemistry). To demonstrate the capability to carry out ICSI within the device, PZs were microinjected with 4-μm fluorescent microspheres and cultured to the blastocyst stage. Finally, the device was assessed for oocyte traceability and high-throughput microinjection capabilities and compared to standard microinjection practice using key parameters (pipette setup, holding then injecting oocytes). Results Compared to standard culture, embryo culture within Pods and a Garage showed no differences in development to the blastocyst stage or levels of DNA damage in resultant blastocysts. Furthermore, microinjection within our device removes the need for a holding pipette, improves traceability, and facilitates high-throughput microinjection. Conclusion This novel device could improve embryo production following ICSI by simplifying the procedure and thus decreasing inter-operator variability.

Diamond-based implant materials make up an emerging research area where the materials could be prepared to promote cellular functions, decrease bacteria attachment, and be suitable for potential in situ imaging. Up until now, diamond implants have been fabricated using coating technologies or embedding diamond nanoparticles in polymer matrices. Here we demonstrated a method of manufacturing diamond implants using laser cladding technology to 3D print a composite of diamond and fused titanium material. Using this method, we could prepare composite scaffolds of up to 50% diamond, which has never been achieved before. We next investigated the interfacial properties of these scaffolds for potential applications in implants. The addition of diamond to the biomaterial results in a 30% decrease in the water contact angle, making the scaffolds more hydrophilic and improving cellular adhesion and proliferation.

Diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers constitute a promising class of quantum nanosensors owing to the unique magneto-optic properties associated with their spin states. The large surface area and photostability of diamond nanoparticles, together with their relatively low synthesis costs, make them a suitable platform for the detection of biologically relevant quantities such as paramagnetic ions and molecules in solution. Nevertheless, their sensing performance in solution is often hampered by poor signal-to-noise ratios and long acquisition times due to distribution inhomogeneities throughout the analyte sample. By concentrating the diamond nanoparticles through an intense microcentrifugation effect in an acoustomicrofluidic device, we show that the resultant dense NV ensembles within the diamond nanoparticles give rise to an order-of-magnitude improvement in the measured acquisition time. The ability to concentrate nanoparticles under surface acoustic wave (SAW) microcentrifugation in a sessile droplet is, in itself, surprising given the well-documented challenge of achieving such an effect for particles below 1 μm in dimension. In addition to a demonstration of their sensing performance, we thus reveal in this work that the reason why the diamond nanoparticles readily concentrate under the SAW-driven recirculatory flow can be attributed to their considerably higher density and hence larger acoustic contrast compared to those for typical particles and cells for which the SAW microcentrifugation flow has been shown to date.

Additively manufactured selective laser melted titanium (SLM-Ti) opens the possibility of tailored medical implants for patients. Despite orthopedic implant advancements, significant problems remain with regard to suboptimal osseointegration at the interface between the implant and the surrounding tissue. Here, we show that applying a nanodiamond (ND) coating onto SLM-Ti scaffolds provides an improved surface for mammalian cell growth while inhibiting colonization of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Owing to the simplicity of our methodology, the approach is suitable for coating SLM-Ti geometries. The ND coating achieved 32 and 29% increases in cell density of human dermal fibroblasts and osteoblasts, respectively, after 3 days of incubation compared with the uncoated SLM-Ti substratum. This increase in cell density complements an 88% reduction in S. aureus detected on the ND-coated SLM-Ti substrata. This study paves a way to create facile antifouling SLM-Ti structures for biomedical implants.

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre is a fluorescent defect in diamond that is of critical importance for applications from ensemble sensing to biolabelling. Hence, understanding and optimising the creation of NV centres in diamond is vital for technological progress in these areas. We demonstrate that simultaneous electron irradiation and annealing of a high-pressure high-temperature diamond sample increases the NV centre creation efficiency from substitutional nitrogen defects by up to 117 % with respect to a sample where the processes are carried out consecutively, but using the same process parameters. This increase in fluorescence is supported by visible and infrared absorption spectroscopy experiments. Our results pave the way for a more efficient creation of NV centres in diamond as well as higher overall NV densities in the future.

Diamonds containing the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centre are a promising system for room-temperature magnetometry. The combination of nano- and micro-diamond particles with optical fibres provides an option for deploying nitrogen-vacancy magnetometers in harsh and challenging environments. Here we numerically explore the coupling efficiency from nitrogen-vacancy centres within a diamond doped at the core/clad interface across a range of commercially available fibre types so as to inform the design process for a diamond in fibre magnetometers. We determine coupling efficiencies from nitrogen-vacancy centres to the guided modes of a step-index fibre and predict the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) generated by a ensemble of four nitrogen-vacancy centres in this hybrid fibre system. Our results show that the coupling efficiency is enhanced with a high refractive index difference between the fibre core and cladding and depends on the radial position of the nitrogen-vacancy centres in the fibre core. Our ODMR simulations show that due to the preferential coupling of the nitrogen-vacancy emission to the fibre guided modes, certain magnetometry features such as ODMR contrast can be enhanced and lead to improved sensitivity in such diamond-fibre systems, relative to conventional diamond only ensemble geometries. Background Cholesterol crystallization within an atherosclerotic plaque significantly contributes to the acceleration of plaque rupture – a problematic event due to the current lack of specific treatments to prevent such formations. Modelling this pathogenic process is also difficult due to the lack of suitable experimental models that enable quantitative analysis of crystal formation and bioactivity screening of potential therapeutic compounds. Aim To develop an in vitro human cell model of cholesterol crystallization combined with an imaging system that incorporates both quantitative analysis and real-time continuous imaging of cholesterol crystal formation. Methods and results An enhanced in vitro model of cholesterol crystallization was developed through the use of acetylated low-density lipoprotein (AcLDL) and 7-ketocholesterol as agents of foam cell induction within a human THP-1 monocytic cell line. Advanced confocal and polarizing microscopies were incorporated into the model so as to allow for quantitation of cholesterol crystallization, with the lipid-loaded group producing significantly greater numbers of cholesterol crystals than the untreated group. The utility of this system was also demonstrated by investigating the effects of the cholesterol-lowering drug lovastatin and therapeutic bile compound ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), showing that these drugs influence different aspects of cholesterol crystal formation. Conclusions The in vitro human THP-1 monocyte model of cholesterol crystallization provides an effective and efficient means of quantitating cholesterol crystallization in the pre-clinical stage of research. The model also allows for the screening of potentially therapeutic compounds that may be used in attenuating or preventing cholesterol crystallization.

Next generation wound care technology capable of diagnosing wound parameters, promoting healthy cell growth, and reducing pathogenic infections noninvasively would provide patients with an improved standard of care and accelerated wound repair. Temperature is one of the indicating biomarkers specific to chronic wounds. This work reports a hybrid, multifunctional optical material platform-nanodiamond (ND)-silk membranes as biopolymer dressings capable of temperature sensing and promoting wound healing. The hybrid structure was fabricated through electrospinning, and 3D submicron fibrous membranes with high porosity were formed. Silk fibers are capable of compensating for the lack of an extracellular matrix at the wound site, supporting the wound-healing process. Negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV-) color centers in NDs exhibit optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) and act as nanoscale thermometers. This can be exploited to sense temperature variations associated with the presence of infection or inflammation in a wound, without physically removing the dressing. Our results show that the presence of NDs in the hybrid ND-silk membranes improves the thermal stability of silk fibers. NV- color centers in NDs embedded in silk fibers exhibit well-retained fluorescence and ODMR. Using the NV- centers as fluorescent nanoscale thermometers, we achieved temperature sensing in 25-50 °C, including the biologically relevant temperature window, for cell-grown ND-silk membranes. An enhancement (∼1.5× on average) in the temperature sensitivity of the NV- centers was observed for the hybrid materials. The hybrid membranes were further tested in vivo in a murine wound-healing model and demonstrated biocompatibility and equivalent wound closure rates as the control wounds. Additionally, the hybrid ND-silk membranes exhibited selective antifouling and biocidal propensity toward Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, while no effect was observed on Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus.

Multimodal imaging promises to revolutionize the understanding of biological processes across scales in space and time by combining the strengths of multiple imaging techniques. Fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) are biocompatible, chemically inert, provide high contrast in light- and electron-based microscopy, and are versatile optical quantum sensors. Here it is demonstrated that FNDs also provide high absorption contrast in nanoscale 3D soft X-ray tomograms with a resolution of 28 nm in all dimensions. Confocal fluorescence, atomic force, and scanning electron microscopy images of FNDs inside and on the surface of PC3 cancer cells with sub-micrometer precision are correlated. FNDs are found inside ≈1 µm sized vesicles present in the cytoplasm, providing direct evidence of the active uptake of bare FNDs by cancer cells. Imaging artefacts are quantified and separated from changes in cell morphology caused by sample preparation. These results demonstrate the utility of FNDs in multimodal imaging, contribute to the understanding of the fate of FNDs in cells, and open up new possibilities for biological imaging and sensing across the nano- and microscale.

Hydrogenated detonation nanodiamonds are of great interest for emerging applications in areas from biology and medicine to lubrication. Here, we compare the two main hydrogenation techniques&mdash, annealing in hydrogen and plasma-assisted hydrogenation&mdash, for the creation of detonation nanodiamonds with a hydrogen terminated surface from the same starting material. Synchrotron-based soft X-ray spectroscopy, infrared absorption spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy were employed to quantify diamond and non-diamond carbon contents and determine the surface chemistries of all samples. Dynamic light scattering was used to study the particles&rsquo, colloidal properties in water. For the first time, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy analysis at temperatures from room temperature down to 10 K was performed to investigate the particles&rsquo, fluorescence properties. Our results show that both hydrogenation techniques produce hydrogenated detonation nanodiamonds with overall similar physico-chemical and fluorescence properties.

Optical fiber chemical sensing is generally achieved through attachment of sensor molecules to the fiber, a process that involves chemicals that are not biologically compatible or are limited to thin monolayer coatings. To address these limitations and enable in-vivo biosensing, we report here, for the first time, silk fibroin coating of optical fibers for encapsulating fluorescent sensor molecules. Silica exposed core fiber (ECF) samples were coated with a thin layer of silk – a naturally derived biopolymer composed entirely of proteins and amino acids. The silk was doped with the fluorophore 5,6-carboxynapthofluorescein (CNF), which allows optical measurement of pH by a robust ratiometric fluorescence method. The fluorescent signal from the doped-silk layer is coupled into the core of the ECF, enabling remote measurement of pH along the length of the fiber. We have demonstrated real time in vivo pH sensing measurements in a mouse model of hypoxia. Our results showed a continuous drop in the subcutaneous pH in the mouse lumbar area as hypoxia developed. Diamond containing the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is emerging as a significant new system for magnetometry. However, most NV sensors require microscopes to collect the fluorescence signals and are therefore limited to laboratory settings. By incorporating micron-scale diamond particles at an annular interface within the cross section of a silicate glass fiber, a high-sensitivity and robust fiber platform for magnetic field sensing is demonstrated here. The fluorescence and spin properties of NV centers embedded in the diamond crystals are well preserved during the fiber drawing process, leading to enhanced continuous-wave diamond-magnetometry in fiber-transmitted sensing configurations. The interface doping of diamond particles also leads to reduced fiber propagation loss and benefits the guidance of NV-fluorescence in the hybrid fiber. Using the diamond-fiber system, magnetic field readout through 50 cm of fiber is achieved. This study paves the way for novel fiber-based diamond sensors for field-deployable quantum metrology applications.

Optical fiber bundles are flexible image conduits used for endoscopy. The presence of an infection in a wound site is typically diagnosed based on the external appearance, such as redness, swelling, odour, and/or loss of function. However, this can lead to inaccurate and untimely diagnoses, since an infection might be present without obvious symptoms. This would commonly require removal of any dressing that might be present, which can cause further pain to the patient. Therefore, there is a need for more precise methods of detecting infections, with minimal effects to the patient. Comparison of temperature differences between infected tissue and healthy tissue shows an increase ranging from 3-4 °C, while normal skin has a temperature gradient of ±1 °C. Hence, monitoring temperature of wounds can be used to detect the presence of an infection. Nanodiamonds (NDs) containing negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) centres are capable of monitoring changes in temperature with minimal influence by environmental factors such as pH, ion concentration or molecular interaction. This study looks at encapsulating these NDs into silk fibres for use as a wound dressing that can monitor temperature changes in the wound, without requiring the removal of the dressing. To further enhance the wound healing and anti-bacterial properties, curcumin was also incorporated into the silk fibres. Curcumin is one of the active ingredients in turmeric and is known to significantly enhance wound healing through its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. This study used this curcumin-nanodiamond-silk hybrid wound dressing to investigate the healing capabilities and temperature sensing properties for use as a wound dressing.

Nanodiamonds containing the Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre are emerging as a unique platform for nanoscale sensing in biological systems. There is particular interest in the capability of sensing subcellular changes of magnetic and electrical fields, temperature, and pressure. However, the sensitivity of such nanodiamond particles with NV centre as a probe is highly dependent on the relative location and polarisation of the NV centre to the bulk of the particle. Here we show the optical scattering from an NV centre in a nanodiamond as a function of position and orientation within the nanodiamond. The scattering fields are obtained by using the recently developed robust non-singular surface integral equation method.1, 2 Our results highlight a new pathway to nanodiamond characterisation which may be useful in teasing out the various effects of surface morphology, surface termination, and formation details, which ultimately may benefit the optimisation of diamond production for nanoscale biosensing applications.

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond is a perfect candidate for quantum sensing applications applied to numerous fields of science. Past studies improved the sensitivity of diamonds containing NV centres by increasing their density or prolonging their coherence time. However, few studies discussed the effects of other defects inside the diamond crystal on the sensitivity of the NV centres. In this study, we demonstrated the implication of single substitutional nitrogen defects on the fluorescence emission, charge state stability, coherence time and sensitivity of the NV centres. We found that there is an optimal concentration of nitrogen defects that allows diamond samples to have a high-density of NV centres and high fluorescence without significantly affecting the coherence time. This results will inform the correct choice of diamond characteristics for current and future quantum sensing applications with the NV centres.

High precision magnetometry is important for a range of applications from the monitoring of biologically generated magnetic fields (e.g. magnetoencephalography and magnetocardiography), to navigation in GPS denied environments, to the detection of gravitational waves. Diamond containing the negatively-charged nitrogen vacancy colour centre (NV-) has emerged as a powerful room-temperature sensing solution. Here we explore NV- centres as a laser medium for a new form of magnetometry: laser threshold magnetometry (LTM). LTM works by placing NV- inside an optical cavity and uses the coherent laser output as a potentially more sensitive readout channel than is possible using conventional (incoherent) optically detected magnetic resonance. Here we show progress towards LTM with diamond. We show twolaser excitation and stimulated emission in free space, and report progress towards diamond-cavity experiments. Our studies highlight the need for different NV- optimisation for laser applications, rather than those conventionally used for quantum information applications

Fluorescent nanodiamonds made from high-pressure high-temperature diamond are increasingly used in biological imaging and sensing applications. To date, only red and green fluorescent nanodiamonds are widely available, severely limiting nanodiamond-based multiplexed imaging. Here, we report on recent progress in the fabrication and characterization of fluorescent nanodiamonds with fluorescence colors from 450 nm to 900 nm. The fluorescence originates from a range of fluorescent color centers based on nitrogen, silicon, nickel and vacancy defects in the diamond lattice. The optical properties of these color centers in diamond nanoparticles are discussed in detail and the utility of nanodiamond-based multiplexed bioimaging demonstrated in experiments in-vitro.

This work reports nanodiamond-silk membranes as an optical platform for biosensing and cell growth applications. The hybrid structure was fabricated through electrospinning and mimics a 2D scaffold with high porosity. The negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV-) centres in diamond exhibits optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), which enables sensing of temperature variations. The NV- centre, as reported in literature, provides a shift of 74 kHz in the ODMR frequency per degree rise in temperature. For our hybrid membranes, we have however observed that the embedded NV- centre provide a greater shift of 95±5 kHz/K in the ODMR frequency. This higher shift in the frequency will result in improved temperature sensitivity enabling the tracking of thermal variations in the biologically relevant window of 25-50 oC. The thermal conductivity of silk and diamond-silk hybrid will be explored to investigate this enhanced temperature sensing ability of diamond. The hybrid diamond-silk membranes are found to be hydrophilic with a contact angle of (65±2)o. The biocompatibility of the membranes is tested both in vitro in skin keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells and in vivo in a live mouse wound model. The membranes did not induce any toxicity to the cell growth and survival. Moreover, we observed resistance towards the growth and attachment of bacteria.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed We demonstrate in-vivo chemical sensing using silk-coated exposed-core microstructured optical fibers (ECFs). The ECF provides advantages in sensitivity due to the direct access of the fiber core to the surrounding environment with integrated measurement along the entire fiber length, rather than simply the fiber tip as is common in other probes. The silk coating provides an encapsulation of the sensor molecules, and is well known as a biocompatible material. This deployable fiber sensor is fabricated with simple splicing and coating techniques, making it practical to be used in a range of biomedical sensing applications, which we demonstrate through pH sensing in a mouse model.

Additive manufacturing using selective laser melted titanium (SLM-Ti) is used to create bespoke items across many diverse fields such as medicine, defense, and aerospace. Despite great progress in orthopedic implant applications, such as for "just in time" implants, significant challenges remain with regards to material osseointegration and the susceptibility to bacterial colonization on the implant. Here, we show that polycrystalline diamond coatings on these titanium samples can enhance biological scaffold interaction improving medical implant applicability. The highly conformable coating exhibited excellent bonding to the substrate. Relative to uncoated SLM-Ti, the diamond coated samples showed enhanced mammalian cell growth, enriched apatite deposition, and reduced microbial S. aureus activity. These results open new opportunities for novel coatings on SLM-Ti devices in general and especially show promise for improved biomedical implants.

Oxygen vacancies in inorganic semiconductors play an important role in reducing electron–hole recombination, which may have important implications in photocatalysis. Cuprous oxide (Cu2O), a visible light active p-type semiconductor, is a promising photocatalyst. However, the synthesis of photostable Cu2O enriched with oxygen defects remains a challenge. We report a simple method for the gram-scale synthesis of highly photostable Cu2O nanoparticles by the hydrolysis of a Cu(I)-triethylamine [Cu(I)–TEA] complex at low temperature. The oxygen vacancies in these Cu2O nanoparticles led to a significant increase in the lifetimes of photogenerated charge carriers upon excitation with visible light. This, in combination with a suitable energy band structure, allowed Cu2O nanoparticles to exhibit outstanding photoactivity in visible light through the generation of electron-mediated hydroxyl (OH˙) radicals. This study highlights the significance of oxygen defects in enhancing the photocatalytic performance of promising semiconductor photocatalysts.

Detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) have unique physical and chemical properties that make them invaluable in many applications. However, DNDs are generally assumed to show weak fluorescence, if any, unless chemically modified with organic molecules. We demonstrate that detonation nanodiamonds exhibit significant and excitation-wavelength-dependent fluorescence from the visible to the near-infrared spectral region above 800 nm, even without the engraftment of organic molecules to their surfaces. We show that this fluorescence depends on the surface functionality of the DND particles. The investigated functionalized DNDs, produced from the same purified DND as well as the as-received polyfunctional starting material, are hydrogen, hydroxyl, carboxyl, ethylenediamine, and octadecylamine-terminated. All DNDs are investigated in solution and on a silicon wafer substrate and compared to fluorescent high-pressure high-temperature nanodiamonds. The brightest fluorescence is observed from octadecylamine-functionalized particles and is more than 100 times brighter than the least fluorescent particles, carboxylated DNDs. The majority of photons emitted by all particle types likely originates from non-diamond carbon. However, we locally find bright and photostable fluorescence from nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond in hydrogenated, hydroxylated, and carboxylated detonation nanodiamonds. Our results contribute to understanding the effects of surface chemistry on the fluorescence of DNDs and enable the exploration of the fluorescent properties of DNDs for applications in theranostics as nontoxic fluorescent labels, sensors, nanoscale tracers, and many others where chemically stable and brightly fluorescent nanoparticles with tailorable surface chemistry are needed.

Biologically compatible fluorescent ion sensors, particularly those that are reversible, represent a key tool for answering a range of fundamental biological questions. We report a rationally designed probe with a 6′-fluoro spiropyran scaffold (5) for the reversible sensing of zinc (Zn 2+ ) in cells. The 6′-fluoro substituent overcomes several limitations normally associated with spiropyran-based sensors to provide an improved signal-To-background ratio and faster photoswitching times in aqueous solution. In vitro studies were performed with 5 and the 6′-nitro analogues (6) in HEK 293 and endothelial cells. The new spiropyran (5) can detect exogenous Zn 2+ inside both cell types and without affecting the proliferation of endothelial cells. Studies were also performed on dying HEK 293 cells, with results demonstrating the ability of the key compound to detect endogenous Zn 2+ efflux from cells undergoing apoptosis. Biocompatibility and photoswitching of 5 were demonstrated within endothelial cells but not with 6, suggesting the future applicability of sensor 5 to study intracellular Zn 2+ efflux in these systems. Nanostructured and bulk silicon carbide (SiC) has recently emerged as a novel platform for quantum nanophotonics due to its harboring of paramagnetic color centers, having immediate applications as a single photon source and spin optical probes. Here, using ultra-short pulsed laser ablation, we fabricated from electron irradiated bulk 4H-SiC, 40-50 nm diameter SiC nanoparticles, fluorescent at 850-950 nm. This photoluminescence is attributed to the silicon vacancy color centers. We demonstrate that the original silicon vacancy color centers from the target sample were retained in the final nanoparticles solution, exhibiting excellent colloidal stability in water over several months. Our work is relevant for quantum nanophotonics, magnetic sensing, and biomedical imaging applications.

Cubic boron nitride (cBN) is a synthetic wide band gap material that has attracted attention due to its high thermal conductivity, optical transparency and optical emission. In this work, defects in cBN have been investigated using experimental and theoretical X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). Vacancy and O substitutional defects were considered, with O substituted at the N site (ON) to be the most energetically favorable. All defects produce unique signatures in either the B or N K-edges and can thus be identified using XANES. The calculations coupled with electron-irradiation / annealing experiments strongly suggest that ON is the dominant defect in irradiated cBN and remains after annealing. This defect is a likely source of optical emission in cBN.

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond is a unique optical defect that is used in many applications today and methods to enhance its fluorescence brightness are highly sought after. We observed experimentally an enhancement of the NV quantum yield by up to 7% in bulk diamond caused by an external magnetic field relative to the field-free case. This observation is rationalised phenomenologically in terms of a magnetic field dependence of the NV excited state triplet-to-singlet transition rate. The theoretical model is in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results at low excitation intensities. Our results significantly contribute to our fundamental understanding of the photophysical properties of the NV defect in diamond.

For tissue scaffolding, it is desirable for the scaffold to promote growth of the native tissue, before the scaffold is ultimately replaced by tissue. While polycaprolactone (PCL) is a superb scaffold material, it is impossible to non-invasively monitor its degradation. Here, incorporating fluorescent nanodiamonds into PCL, we show sub-dermal fluorescence imaging of PCL. This provides an opportunity to monitor PCL degradation to assess real-time tissue uptake and replacement. Furthermore, nanodiamonds increase the hydrophillicity PCL, and hence may increase tissue uptake rates, opening new applications for PCL.
