Abstract: Nowadays the implementation of artificial neural networks in high-energy physics has obtained excellent results on improving signal detection. In this work we propose to use neural networks (NNs) for event discrimination in HAWC. This observatory is a water Cherenkov gamma-ray detector that in recent years has implemented algorithms to identify horizontal muon tracks. However, these algorithms are not very efficient. In this work we describe the implementation of three NNs: two based on image classification and one based on object detection. Using these algorithms we obtain an increase in the number of identified tracks. The results of this study could be used in the future to improve the performance of the Earth-skimming technique for the indirect measurement of neutrinos with HAWC., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, Proceedings of the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

Abstract: The detection of electromagnetic (EM) emission following the gravitational wave (GW) event GW170817 opened the era of multi-messenger astronomy with GWs and provided the first direct evidence that at least a fraction of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are progenitors of short Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). GRBs are also expected to emit very-high energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) photons, as proven by the recent MAGIC and H.E.S.S. observations. One of the challenges for future multi-messenger observations will be the detection of such VHE emission from GRBs in association with GWs. In the next years, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be a key instrument for the EM follow-up of GW events in the VHE range, owing to its unprecedented sensitivity, rapid response, and capability to monitor a large sky area via scan-mode operation. We present the CTA GW follow-up program, with a focus on the searches for short GRBs possibly associated with BNS mergers. Abstract: Muons from extensive air showers appear as rings in images taken with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, such as VERITAS. These muon-ring images are used for the calibration of the VERITAS telescopes, however the calibration accuracy can be improved with a more efficient muon-identification algorithm. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used in many state-of-the-art image-recognition systems and are ideal for muon image identification, once trained on a suitable dataset with labels for muon images. However, by training a CNN on a dataset labelled by existing algorithms, the performance of the CNN would be limited by the suboptimal muon-identification efficiency of the original algorithms. Muon Hunters 2 is a citizen science project that asks users to label grids of VERITAS telescope images, stating which images contain muon rings. Each image is labelled 10 times by independent volunteers, and the votes are aggregated and used to assign a `muon' or `non-muon' label to the corresponding image. An analysis was performed using an expert-labelled dataset in order to determine the optimal vote percentage cut-offs for assigning labels to each image for CNN training. This was optimised so as to identify as many muon images as possible while avoiding false positives. The performance of this model greatly improves on existing muon identification algorithms, identifying approximately 30 times the number of muon images identified by the current algorithm implemented in VEGAS (VERITAS Gamma-ray Analysis Suite), and roughly 2.5 times the number identified by the Hough transform method, along with significantly outperforming a CNN trained on VEGAS-labelled data.

Abstract: 1A 0535+262 is a Be X-ray binary pulsar and one of the only galactic pulsar systems to show radio jet emission. Characterizing the very high energy emission (VHE, >100 GeV) in these extreme microquasars is critical to understanding their contribution to the origin of galactic cosmic rays. The 2020 giant outburst of this system, where X-ray fluxes exceeded 12 Crab, marked a rare opportunity to investigate the gamma-ray and rapid optical variability of these transient systems while in such an extreme state. This month of activity marked the brightest flare measured in this system. VERITAS's developing optical capabilities in tandem with the ability to measure TeV gamma rays allowed for a unique campaign to be undertaken. VERITAS's observations of this system during the outburst will be presented in the context of observations at lower energies and previous observations of this system by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes.

Abstract: Fast radio burst (FRBs) are an exciting class of bright, extragalactic, millisecond radio transients. The recent development of large field-of-view (FOV) radio telescopes has caused a rapid rise in the number of identified single burst and repeating FRBs. This has allowed for the extensive multi-wavelength follow-up to search for the potential counterparts predicted by theoretical models. New observations of similar radio transients in Galactic magnetars like SGR 1935+2154 have continued to motivate the search for rapid optical and very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV) counterparts. Since 2016 VERITAS has engaged in an FRB observing campaign to search for the prompt optical, and VHE emission from multiple repeating FRBs. We present these new results from VERITAS observations of five repeating sources including data taken simultaneously with bursts observed by the CHIME radio telescope.

Abstract: We report recent progress on the ongoing NuSTAR observational campaign of 8 TeV-detected pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). This campaign constitutes a major part of our NuSTAR study of some of the most energetic TeV sources in our galaxy detected by VERITAS and HAWC. NuSTAR is the first focusing X-ray telescope operating above 10 keV in space with sub-arcminute angular resolution. Broad-band X-ray imaging and spectroscopy data, obtained by NuSTAR, allow us to probe sub-PeV electron populations through detecting synchrotron X-ray radiation. Our targets include PeVatron candidates detected by HAWC, the Boomerang nebula, PWNe crushed by supernova remnant shocks (or relic PWNe), and G0.9+0.1 in the Galactic Center. Using Fermi-LAT data and available TeV data, we aim to provide a complete, multi-wavelength view of a diverse class of middle-aged (~10-100 kyrs old) PWNe. Our NuSTAR analysis detected hard X-ray emission from the Eel and Boomerang PWNe and characterized their broad-band X-ray spectra most accurately. We plan to apply both time-evolution and multi-zone PWN models to multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) data over the radio, X-ray, GeV, and TeV bands. In this proceeding, we will review our observational campaign and discuss the preliminary results for some PWNe.

8. Limits on the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background with HAWC

Abstract: Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the most luminous sources in the universe. The nature of their emission at TeV energies is one of the most relevant open issues related to these events. The temporal and spectral features inferred from the early and late emissions usually known as prompt and afterglow, respectively, can be interpreted within the context of the fireball model. The synchrotron self-Compton process is expected during the afterglow phase. We explain how the theoretical SSC light curves can be compared with hypothetical upper limit located at z=0.3. We show the allowed parameter space of the microphysical parameters and density of the circumburst medium. Abstract: Studies of radio galaxies at TeV energies are fascinating because their jets are misaligned concerning our sightline. Thus, it provides us with a unique opportunity to study the structure of their jets, the radiative processes, and the acceleration mechanisms involved in them. In addition, some radio galaxies have presented variability in their emission, like the giant radio galaxy M87, which has reported several activity periods. Due to its duty cycle >95% and instantaneous field of view of 2 sr, HAWC provides daily monitoring of variable sources visible from the Northern Hemisphere. In this work, we show the results of monitoring M87 between January 2015 and December 2018. HAWC's observations are consistent with the low activity state reported by other instruments (like H.E.S.S and MAGIC). Abstract: M87 is a giant radio galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster, known to be a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray source. As radio galaxies are considered the misaligned low-redshift counterparts of blazars, they are excellent laboratories for testing AGN emission models. M87 has been detected and monitored by Fermi-LAT and several atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Recently, the HAWC Collaboration presented marginal evidence of 4.5 year TeV gamma-ray emission from this object. The HAWC data has the potential to constrain the average VHE emission of sources of complex behavior, like M87, for which the physical origin of the VHE gamma-ray emission is still uncertain. We fitted a lepto-hadronic scenario to the broadband spectral energy distribution of M87 to model its non-flaring VHE emission using HAWC data.

Abstract: eHWC J1825-134 is one of the brightest Galactic 𝛾-ray sources above 50 TeV observed by High Altitude Water Cherenkov 𝛾-Ray Observatory (HAWC). Detailed morphological studies have revealed a new point-like source inside this region with a spectral energy distribution extending beyond 200 TeV without any cutoff. These very-high-energy 𝛾 rays emission can originate from leptonic or hadronic processes. The new point-like source is located in a region containing PWNe and a high-density giant molecular cloud [MML2017]99. If the source emission is associated with the hadronic scenario the TeV 𝛾 rays may have been produced by cosmic rays colliding with ambient gas. If this were the case, eHWC J1825-134 is an indicator of the existence of a galactic PeVatron in the region that accelerates particles up to PeV energies.

Abstract: We present the observation of an anomalous increment of the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) flux observed by the HAWC array during October 2016. We propose that this anisotropy of the GCR flux was caused by a magnetic flux rope (MFR) i. e., by the helicoidal magnetic field of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection observed at 1 AU at the same time. We computed the trajectory of protons with energy in the range of 10 to 60 GeV, traveling inside the helicoidal magnetic field observed in situ. The direction of these particles changes towards the axis of the MFR resulting in an anisotropy of the GCR flux along this axis. This model shows that the alignment between the MFR axis and the HAWC s asymptotic direction, combined with the high sensitivity of HAWC, allowed us to observe the effect of the passage of the MFR on the GCR flux. We present the HAWC observation associated with the passage of the MFR as well as the helio- spheric circumstances around such phenomenon.

Abstract: The Cygnus Cocoon region is a complex region containing an OB star cluster that is prominent in the TeV energy range. Located in this region is 3HWC J2031+415, a significant TeV gamma-ray source whose emission is possibly associated with 2 components, the Cygnus OB2 star cluster and a pulsar wind nebula (PWN). In this work, several modelling methods are presented to best describe the emission. These models disentangle emission believed to be from the Cocoon and isolate the component emitted by the probable PWN. I will present several spectral models to describe the emission of the probable PWN using the latest data set from the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory. Furthermore, I will present an energy morphology study of the PWN component of 3HWC J2031+415 in distinct energy bands.

Abstract: The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is a wide-field-of-view gamma-ray observatory that is optimized to detect gamma rays between ~300 GeV and several hundred TeV. The HAWC Collaboration recently released their third source catalog (3HWC), which contains 65 sources. One of these sources, the ultra-high-energy gamma-ray source 3HWC J1908+063, may exhibit a hardening of the spectral index at the highest energies (above 56 TeV). At least two populations of particles are needed to satisfactorily explain the highest energy emission. This second component could be leptonic or hadronic in origin. If it is hadronic in origin, it would imply the presence of protons with energies up to $\sim$1 PeV near the source. We have searched other 3HWC sources for the presence of this spectral hardening feature. If observed, this would imply that the sources could make good PeVatron candidates.

Abstract: The TeV gamma-ray source MGRO J1908+06 is one of the highest-energy sources known, with observed emission by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory extending well past 100 TeV. The source exhibits both energy-dependent morphology and a spatially-dependent spectral index. The emission is likely to be dominantly leptonic, and associated with the radio-quiet PSR J1907+0602. However, one-population models do not describe the data well; a second particle population is needed to explain the shape of the spectral energy distribution at the highest energies. This component can be well-described by either leptonic or hadronic hypotheses. We discuss this feature and implications for detection by multi-wavelength and multi-messenger experiments.

27. Locating the Most Energetic Electrons in Cassiopeia A

Abstract: We present deep (>2.4 Ms) observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant with NuSTAR, which operates in the 3-79 keV bandpass and is the first instrument capable of spatially resolving the remnant above 15 keV. We find that the emission is not entirely dominated by the forward shock nor by a smooth "bright ring" at the reverse shock. Instead we find that the >15 keV emission is dominated by knots near the center of the remnant and dimmer filaments near the remnant's outer rim. These regions are fit with unbroken power laws in the 15-50 keV bandpass, though the central knots have a steeper (Gamma approx. −3.35) spectrum than the outer filaments (Gamma approx. −3.06). We argue this difference implies that the central knots are located in the 3-D interior of the remnant rather than at the outer rim of the remnant and seen in the center due to projection effects. The morphology of >15 keV emission does not follow that of the radio emission nor that of the low energy (<12 keV) X-rays, leaving the origin of the >15 keV emission an open mystery. Even at the forward shock front we find less steepening of the spectrum than expected from an exponentially cut off electron distribution with a single cutoff energy. Finally, we find that the GeV emission is not associated with the bright features in the NuSTAR band while the TeV emission may be, suggesting that both hadronic and leptonic emission mechanisms may be at work.

Abstract: Background showers triggered by hadrons represent over 99.9% of all particles arriving at ground-based gamma-ray observatories. An important stage in the data analysis of these observatories, therefore, is the removal of hadron-triggered showers. Currently, the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory employs an algorithm based on a single cut in two variables, unlike other ground-based gamma-ray observatories (e.g. H.E.S.S., VERITAS), which employ a large number of variables to separate the primary particles. In this work, we explore machine learning techniques (Boosted Decision Trees and Neural Networks) to identify the primary particles detected by HAWC. Abstract: The gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 was found with an enhanced gamma-ray emission state in spatial and temporal coincidence with the IceCube high energy neutrino event IC170922A. This is the most significant association by far between a high-energy neutrino event and a blazar in a flaring state. Studying the time evolution and spectral behavior of the blazar emission may help in identifying the sources of the diffuse neutrino flux observed by IceCube and the origin of energetic cosmic rays. TXS 0506+056 was detected by the VERITAS gamma-ray observatory with a significance of 5.8 standard deviations above 110 GeV in a 35 hour data set collected between September 23, 2017 and February 6, 2018. Here we will present results from recent VERITAS observations and an associated multiwavelength campaign, collected between October 10, 2018 to March 1, 2021. A relatively quiet very high energy gamma-ray emission state was observed during this time period, and flux upper limits are used to constrain the potential variability of this blazar.

Abstract: A wide range of data formats and proprietary software have traditionally been used in gamma-ray astronomy, usually developed for a single specific mission or experiment. However, in recent years there has been an increasing effort towards making astronomical data open and easily accessible. Within the gamma-ray community this has translated to the creation of a common data format across different gamma-ray observatories: the "gamma-astro-data-format" (GADF). Based on a similar premise, open-source analysis packages, such as Gammapy, are being developed and aim to provide a single, robust tool which suits the needs of many experiments at once. In this contribution we show that data from the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory can be made compatible with the GADF and present the first GADF-based production of event lists and instrument response functions for a ground-based wide-field instrument. We use these data products to reproduce with excellent agreement the published HAWC Crab spectrum using Gammapy. Having a common data format and analysis tools facilitates joint analysis between different experiments and effective data sharing. Abstract: 36th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2019, Madison, USA, 24 Jul 2019 - 1 Aug 2019; 9 pages (2019)., The search for Dark Matter (DM) has great potential to reveal physics beyond the Standard Model. As such, searches for evidence of DM particles are being carried out using a wide range of techniques, such as direct searches for DM particles, searches for DM produced with colliders, and indirect searches for the Standard Model annihilation products of DM. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are excellent targets for indirect Dark Matter searches due to their relatively high DM content and negligible expected astrophysical background. A collaboration was formed to maximise the sensitivity of DM searches towards dSphs by combining for the first time dSph data from three imaging air Cherenkov telescope (IACT) arrays: HESS, MAGIC, and VERITAS; the Fermi-LAT satellite, and the water Cherenkov detector HAWC. Due to the diverse nature of the instruments involved, each experiment will analyse their individual datasets from multiple targets and then the results will be combined at the likelihood level. For consistency of the likelihoods across the five experiments, a common approach is used to treat the astrophysical factor (J-Factor) for each target and an agreed set of annihilation channels are considered. We also agree on a common statistical approach and treatment of instrumental systematic uncertainties. The results are presented in terms of constraints on the velocity-weighted cross section for DM self-annihilation as a function of the DM particle mass.

Abstract: For the first time in the history of ground-based $\gamma$-ray astronomy, the on-axis performance of the dual mirror, aspheric, aplanatic Schwarzschild-Couder optical system has been demonstrated in a $9.7$-m aperture imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope. The novel design of the prototype Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (pSCT) is motivated by the need of the next-generation Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory to have the ability to perform wide ($\geq 8^{\circ}$) field-of-view observations simultaneously with superior imaging of atmospheric cascades (resolution of $0.067^{\circ}$ per pixel or better). The pSCT design, if implemented in the CTA installation, has the potential to improve significantly both the $\gamma$-ray angular resolution and the off-axis sensitivity of the observatory, reaching nearly the theoretical limit of the technique and thereby making a major impact on the CTA observatory sky survey programs, follow-up observations of multi-messenger transients with poorly known initial localization, as well as on the spatially resolved spectroscopic studies of extended $\gamma$-ray sources. Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be able to perform unprecedented observations of the transient very high-energy sky. An on-line science alert generation (SAG) pipeline, with a required 30 second latency, will allow the discovery or follow-up of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and flaring emission from active galactic nuclei, galactic compact objects and electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves or neutrino messengers. The CTA sensitivity for very short exposures does not only depend on the technological performance of the array (e.g. effective area, background discrimination efficiency). The algorithms to evaluate the significance of the detection also define the sensitivity, together with their computational efficiency in order to satisfy the SAG latency requirements. We explore the aperture photometry and likelihood analysis techniques, and the associated parameters (e.g. on-source to off-source exposure ratio, minimum number of required signal events), defining the CTA ability to detect a significant signal at short exposures. Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an international next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory. CTA will be implemented as southern and northern hemisphere arrays of tens of small, medium and large-sized imaging Cherenkov telescopes with the goal of improving the sensitivity over the current-generation experiments by an order of magnitude. CTA will provide energy coverage from ∼20 GeV to more than 300 TeV. The Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) medium size (9.5m) telescopes will feature a novel aplanatic two-mirror optical design capable of accommodating a wide field-of-view with significantly improved angular resolution as compared to the traditional Davies-Cotton optical design. A full-scale prototype SC medium size telescope structure has been designed and will be constructed at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona during the fall of 2015. This report will concentrate on the novel features of the design.

Abstract: VERITAS is an array of four, 12-m-diameter, Cherenkov telescopes, designed to explore the very-high-energy gamma-ray sky in the energy band between 100 GeV and 50 TeV. Its construction and commissioning have occurred over the past two years and the array has been taking scientific data with three or more telescopes since November 2006. We present results from observations made with VERITAS during the past observing season, including new results on the distant blazar 1ES 1218 + 304 , the active galaxy M87 and the high-mass X-ray binary system LS I + 61 303. We also describe the plans in place for the coming observing seasons.

Abstract: VERITAS, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, is a major new ground-based observatory for studying nonthermal astrophysics in the gamma-ray band above 100 GeV. Stereo observations with the first two of four telescopes began in March, 2006 at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona, USA. Construction and commissioning of the remainder of the array has taken place during the Summer and Fall of 2006, in parallel with engineering and science observations by the first two telescopes. We present the performance of the VERITAS telescopes during this commissioning period and discuss the key science program planned for VERITAS during the first two years of routine array operation, beginning in March, 2007. This program includes a sky survey in the galactic plane, observations of SNRs and PWNe, studies of TeV-emitting AGN, and a search for dark matter.

Abstract: Gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations at very high energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) can impose tight constraints on some GRB emission models. Many GRB afterglow models predict a VHE component similar to that seen in blazars and plerions, in which the GRB spectral energy distribution has a double-peaked shape extending into the VHE regime. VHE emission coincident with delayed X-ray flare emission has also been predicted. GRB follow-up observations have had high priority in the observing program at the Whipple 10m Gamma-ray Telescope and GRBs will continue to be high priority targets as the next generation observatory, VERITAS, comes on-line. Abstract: A medium-sized Schwarzchild-Couder Telescope (SCT) is being developed as a possible extension for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The Cherenkov camera of the telescope is designed to have 11328 silicon photomultiplier pixels capable of capturing high-resolution images of air showers in the atmosphere. The combination of the large number of pixels and the high trigger rate (> 5 kHz) expected for this telescope results in a multi-Gbps data throughput. This sets challenging requirements on the design and performance of a data acquisition system for processing and storing this data. A prototype SCT (pSCT) with a partial camera containing 1600 pixels, covering a field of view of 2.5 x 2.5 square degrees, is being assembled at the F.L. Whipple Observatory. Abstract: We present deep ($>$2.4 Ms) observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant with {\it NuSTAR}, which operates in the 3--79 keV bandpass and is the first instrument capable of spatially resolving the remnant above 15 keV. We find that the emission is not entirely dominated by the forward shock nor by a smooth "bright ring" at the reverse shock. Instead we find that the $>$15 keV emission is dominated by knots near the center of the remnant and dimmer filaments near the remnant's outer rim. These regions are fit with unbroken power-laws in the 15--50 keV bandpass, though the central knots have a steeper ($\Gamma \sim -3.35$) spectrum than the outer filaments ($\Gamma \sim -3.06$). We argue this difference implies that the central knots are located in the 3-D interior of the remnant rather than at the outer rim of the remnant and seen in the center due to projection effects. The morphology of $>$15 keV emission does not follow that of the radio emission nor that of the low energy ($$15 keV emission as an open mystery. Even at the forward shock front we find less steepening of the spectrum than expected from an exponentially cut off electron distribution with a single cutoff energy. Finally, we find that the GeV emission is not associated with the bright features in the {\it NuSTAR} band while the TeV emission may be, suggesting that both hadronic and leptonic emission mechanisms may be at work., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: The middle-aged supernova remnant IC 443 is interacting with molecular gas in its surroundings. $Fermi$-LAT has established that its gamma-ray emission at low energies shows the "pion bump" that is characteristic of hadronic emission. TeV emission was previously established by MAGIC and VERITAS at a site of interaction between the shock front and a molecular cloud. VERITAS has continued to observe IC 443 and can now resolve the emission on few-arcmin scales. Abstract: The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) being constructed in Southern Arizona consists of an array of four Atmospheric Cherenkov 12m Telescopes designed to observe astrophysical gamma rays in the energy range from 100 GeV to tens of TeV. A first telescope has been in operation on a temporary site since the end of 2004 and meets all specifications. The second is being installed on the same site, 85m from the first, in order to test stereoscopic capabilities. The full system of four telescopes is expected to be installed on the definitive site by the end of 2006.

Abstract: The rst gravitational-wave (GW) observations will greatly benet, or even depend on, the detection of coincident electromagnetic counterparts. These counterparts will similarly enhance the scientic impact of later detections. Electromagnetic follow-ups can be, nevertheless, challenging for GW event candidates with poorly reconstructed directions. Localization can be inecient in several important scenarios: (i) in the early advanced detector era, only the two LIGO observatories will be operating; (ii) later, even with more observatories, the detectors’ sensitivity will probably be non-uniform; (iii) the rst events, as well as a signicant fraction of later events, will likely occur near the detectors’ horizon distance, where they are only marginally detectable, having low signal-to-noise ratios. In these scenarios, the precision of localization can be severely limited. Follow-up observations will need to cover hundreds to thousands of square degrees of the sky over a limited period of time, reducing the list of suitable followup telescopes or telescope networks. Compact binary mergers, the most anticipated sources for the rst GW observations, will be detectable via advanced LIGO/Virgo from hundreds of megaparsecs, setting the scale to the sensitivity required from followup observatories. We demonstrate that the Cherenkov Telescope Array will be capable of following up GW event candidates over the required large sky area with sucient sensitivity to detect short gamma-ray bursts, which are thought to originate from compact binary mergers, out to the horizon distance of advanced LIGO/Virgo. CTA can therefore be invaluable starting with the rst multimessenger detections, even with poorly reconstructed GW source directions. This scenario also provides a further scientic

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will be one of the biggest ground-based very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray observatory. CTA will achieve a factor of 10 improvement in sensitivity from some tens of GeV to beyond 100 TeV with respect to existing telescopes. The CTA observatory will be capable of issuing alerts on variable and transient sources to maximize the scientific return. To capture these phenomena during their evolution and for effective communication to the astrophysical community, speed is crucial. This requires a system with a reliable automated trigger that can issue alerts immediately upon detection of gamma-ray flares. This will be accomplished by means of a Real-Time Analysis (RTA) pipeline, a key system of the CTA observatory. The latency and sensitivity requirements of the alarm system impose a challenge because of the anticipated large data rate, between 0.5 and 8 GB/s. As a consequence, substantial efforts toward the optimization of high-throughput computing service are envisioned. For these reasons our working group has started the development of a prototype of the Real-Time Analysis pipeline. The main goals of this prototype are to test: (i) a set of frameworks and design patterns useful for the inter-process communication between software processes running on memory; (ii) the sustainability of the foreseen CTA data rate in terms of data throughput with different hardware (e.g. accelerators) and software configurations, (iii) the reuse of non-real-time algorithms or how much we need to simplify algorithms to be compliant with CTA requirements, (iv) interface issues between the different CTA systems. In this work we focus on goals (i) and (ii).

Abstract: Multiwavelength observations of the high-frequency-peaked blazar 1ES 2344+514 were performed from October 2007 to January 2008. The campaign represents the first contemporanous data on the object at very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray, X-ray, and UV energies. Observations with VERITAS in VHE gamma-rays yield a strong detection of 20 sigmas with 633 excess events in a total exposure of 18.1 hours live-time. A strong VHE gamma-ray flare on December 7, 2007 is measured at F(>300 GeV) = (6.76 ± 0.62) × 10^-11 cm^-2 s^-1 , corresponding to 48% of the Crab Nebula flux. Excluding this flaring episode, nightly variability at lower fluxes is observed with a time-averaged mean of F(>300 GeV) = (1.06 ± 0.09) × 10^-11 cm^-2 s^-1 (7.6% of the Crab Nebula flux). The differential photon spectrum between 390 GeV and 8.3 TeV for the time-averaged observations excluding December 7, 2007 is well described by a power law with a photon index of 2.78 ± 0.09 (stat) ± 0.15 (syst). A slightly harder photon index of 2.43 ± 0.22stat ± 0.15syst is measured on the flaring night of December 7, 2007. Over the full period of VERITAS observations contemporaneous X-ray and UV data were taken with Swift and RXTE. Variability by a factor of ~7 is evident in the 2-10 keV flux between nightly observations. On December 8, 2007 the highest ever observed X-ray flux from 1ES 2344+514 was measured by Swift XRT at a flux of F(2-10 keV) = (6.58 ± 0.37) × 10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1. Evidence for a correlation between the X-ray flux and VHE gamma-ray flux on nightly time-scales is indicated with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.60 ± 0.11. Contemporaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 1ES 2344+514 are presented for two distinct flux states. A one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model describes both SEDs using parameters consistent with previous SSC modeling of 1ES 2344+514 from non-contemporaneous observations. Fil: Acciari, V. A.. Abstract: We report the discovery of TeV gamma-ray emission from the Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) G120.1+1.4, known as Tycho's supernova remnant. Observations performed in the period 2008-2010 with the VERITAS ground-based gamma-ray observatory reveal weak emission coming from the direction of the remnant, compatible with a point source located at $00^{\rm h} \ 25^{\rm m} \ 27.0^{\rm s},\ +64^{\circ} \ 10^{\prime} \ 50^{\prime\prime}$ (J2000). The TeV photon spectrum measured by VERITAS can be described with a power-law $dN/dE = C(E/3.42\;\textrm{TeV})^{-\Gamma}$ with $\Gamma = 1.95 \pm 0.51_{stat} \pm 0.30_{sys}$ and $C = (1.55 \pm 0.43_{stat} \pm 0.47_{sys}) \times 10^{-14}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$TeV$^{-1}$. The integral flux above 1 TeV corresponds to $\sim 0.9%$ percent of the steady Crab Nebula emission above the same energy, making it one of the weakest sources yet detected in TeV gamma rays. We present both leptonic and hadronic models which can describe the data. The lowest magnetic field allowed in these models is $\sim 80 \mu$G, which may be interpreted as evidence for magnetic field amplification., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Accepted in ApJL
