Two new species of Harpalyce are described from Cuba, H. revoluta sp. nov. from a serpentine area in the northern part of E. Cuba and H. marianensis sp. nov. from calcareous areas in the southern part of E. Cuba. Both have relatively small flowers, with an up to 6 mm long standard, and 2-3 mm long wings. Harpalyce marianensis is further characterized by strongly suberous (corky) young branches of a spongy consistence, deeply furrowed longitudinally, and by leaflets covered with a particular type of orange, apparently disk-shaped, sessile glands abaxially. Harpalyce revoluta, moreover, has suborbicular or broadly elliptic leaflets with a strongly recurved or sometimes revolute margin, secondary veins inconspicuous on either side; the foliar glands, by their morphology and anatomy, are of a different type. An epitype is designated for the name Harpalyce and its type, H. formosa; the distribution of both new species and their close relatives is mapped, and an updated identification key is offered, to cater for all 16 currently recognised Cuban species. Harpalyce greuteri is described as a new species from the serpentine outcrops of Holguín in eastern Cuba. It differs from other Cuban species of the genus by having leaflets alternate along the rachis, an elliptic, rounded or slightly acuminate standard petal, mostly black keel petals and broadly linear wing petals. An illustration and a distribution map of the new species are presented, as well as a synopsis of and an identification key to all 14 recognized species of H. sect. Cubenses. Our knowledge of the systematics of the papilionoid legume tribe Brongniartieae has greatly benefitted from recent advances in molecular phylogenetics. The tribe was initially described to include species marked by a strongly bilabiate calyx and an embryo with a straight radicle, but recent research has placed taxa from the distantly related core Sophoreae and Millettieae within it. Despite these advances, the most species-rich genera within the Brongniartieae are still not well studied, and their morphological and biogeographical evolution remains poorly understood. Comprising 35 species, Harpalyce is one of these poorly studied genera. In this study, we present a comprehensive, multi-locus molecular phylogeny of the Brongniartieae, with an increased sampling of Harpalyce , to investigate morphological and biogeographical evolution within the group. Our results confirm the monophyly of Harpalyce and indicate that peltate glandular trichomes and a strongly bilabiate calyx with a carinal lip and three fused lobes are synapomorphies for the genus, which is internally divided into three distinct ecologically and geographically divergent lineages, corresponding to the previously recognized sections. Our biogeographical reconstructions demonstrate that Brongniartieae originated in South America during the Eocene, with subsequent pulses of diversification in South America, Mesoamerica, and Australia. Harpalyce also originated in South America during the Miocene at around 20 Ma, with almost synchronous later diversification in South America and Mexico/Mesoamerica beginning 10 Ma, but mostly during the Pliocene. The new species Brongniartia bicornuta (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae), endemic to seasonally dry tropical forests of the Balsas River Basin in the states of Guerrero and Puebla, Mexico, is described and illustrated. It is a shrub with conspicuous, horn-shaped stipules and small flowers with bicolor petals that are lavender at the base and gradually becoming yellowish-green on the upper portion. Harpalyce riparia is described as a new species from the campo rupestre (rocky outcrops) vegetation of the Chapada Diamantina, state of Bahia, northeastern Brazil The new species is morphologically similar to H. brasiliana and H. parvifolia, but it differs from the former mainly by the shorter 2 - 3 cm long inflorescence, smaller 1. 2 - 1. 5 cm long flowers, and fewer-seeded fruits (6 - 1 0 seeds), and from the latter by the chartaceous texture of the much larger 1. 5 - 4. 5 X 0. 7 - 1. 5 cm leaflets and non-overlapping geographical distribution In addition to providing a complete description, illustration, and distribution map for the new species, we also provide an identification key to all known species of Harpalyce sect. A new genus Limadendron (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae, Brongniartieae) from northern South America is described and illustrated. The new genus is segregated from Poecilanthe based on a previous phylogenetic analysis. Limadendron is sister to Cyclolobium and differs from it mainly by its woody dehiscent legumes contrasting with the winged samaroid fruits of the latter. Two new combinations, Limadendron amazonicum (Ducke) Meireles & A. M. G. Azevedo and Limadendron hostmannii (Benth.) Meireles & A. M. G. Azevedo, are proposed. new genus of Leguminosae in tribe Brongniartieae is proposed based on a new species endemic to the Caatinga of Bahia state. The new genus is named as Tabaroa L. P. Queiroz, G. P. Lewis & M. F. Wojc. and the new species as Tabaroa caatingicola L. P. Queiroz, G. P. Lewis & M. F. Wojc. A phylogenetic study of the Brongniartieae based on nuclear rDNA ITS and plastid matK sequences supports a closer relationship between Tabaroa and Harpalyce Moc. & Sessé than to the two South American genera Poecilanthe Benth. and Cyclolobium Benth., which are more similar morphologically. Optimisation of selected morphological characters on one of the most parsimonious trees indicates that the sessile ovary and the explosive pollen presentation are putative synapomorphies of the Tabaroa-Harpalyce clade. The genus Tabaroa may be diagnosed by the absence of peltate glandular trichomes; leaves imparipinnate, exstipellate and with opposite leaflets; flowers sessile, not resupinate, grouped in panicles; anthers apiculate; and fruit indehiscent. The only known species inhabits areas of arboreal caatinga on sandy soil in southwestern Bahia, near the boundaries of Dom Basílio and Livramento de Nossa Senhora municipalities.
