In-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy was used to study excited states of the neutron-deficient nucleus $^{37}$K populated in fast-beam inelastic-scattering and proton-removal reactions at high-momentum loss. New $\gamma$-ray transitions and $\gamma\gamma$ coincidence relationships were established using the $\gamma$-ray tracking array GRETINA. The extension of the level scheme up to the first $(13/2^-)$ state highlights the potential of this recently demonstrated population pathway for studies of isospin symmetry involving mirror-energy differences. The nature of the newly identified states is discussed in comparison to shell-model calculations with the FSU cross-shell effective interaction. The calculated occupation numbers of individual orbitals are shown to offer a consistent explanation of the measured mirror-energy differences between $^{37}$K and $^{37}$Ar., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

A new neutron SIMulation program based on the versatile GEANT4 toolkit, neuSIM4, has been developed to describe interactions of neutrons in the NE213 liquid scintillator from 0.1 to 3000 MeV. neuSIM4 is designed to accommodate complicated modern detector geometry setups with multiple scintillator detectors, each of which can be outfitted with more than one photo-multiplier. To address a broad spectrum of neutron energies, two new neutron interaction physics models, KSCIN and NxQMD, have been implemented in GEANT4. For neutrons with energy below 110 MeV, we incorporate a total of eleven neutron induced reaction channels on hydrogen and carbon nuclei, including nine carbon inelastic reaction channels, into KSCIN. Beyond 110 MeV, we implement a neutron induced reaction model, NxQMD, in GEANT4. We use its results as reference to evaluate other neutron-interaction physics models in GEANT4. We find that results from an existing cascade physics model (INCL) in GEANT4 agree very well with the results from NxQMD, and results from both codes agree with new and existing light response data. To connect KSCIN to NxQMD or INCL, we introduce a transition region where the contribution of neuSIM4 linearly decreases with corresponding increased contributions from NxQMD or INCL. To demonstrate the application of the new code, we simulate the light response and performance of a 2 x 2 m2 neutron detector wall array consisting of 25 2m-long scintillation bars. We are able to compare the predicted light response functions to the shape of the experimental response functions and calculate the efficiency of the neutron detector array for neutron energies up to 200 MeV. These simulation results will be pivotal for understanding the performance of modern neutron arrays with intricate geometries, especially in the measurements of neutron energy spectra in heavy-ion reactions.

Fusion enhancement for neutron-rich isotopes of oxygen on carbon nuclei was probed. To measure the fusion cross-section a $^{20}$O beam accelerated to E$_{lab}$/A=2.7 MeV bombarded the active-target detector MuSIC@Indiana with a fill gas of CH$_4$. Examination of the average fusion cross-section over the interval 12 MeV $\leq$E$_{c.m.}$$\leq$ 17 MeV for $^{16-20}$O + $^{12}$C reveals that while even isotopes of oxygen exhibit essentially the same cross-section, the cross-section for odd isotopes can be either enhanced or suppressed relative to the even A members of the isotopic chain. The boundaries of the Chart of Nuclides contain exotic isotopes that possess extreme proton-toneutron asymmetries. Here we report on strong evidence of 9N, one of the most exotic proton-rich isotopes where more than one half of its constitute nucleons are unbound. With seven protons and two neutrons, this extremely proton-rich system would represent the first-known example of a ground-state five-proton emitter. The invariant-mass spectrum of its decay products can be fit with two peaks whose energies are consistent with the theoretical predictions of an open-quantum-system approach, however we cannot rule out the possibility that only a single resonance-like peak is present in the spectrum., Comment: 4 figures, 7pages

The Hopf algebra $\mathcal{D}$ which is the subject of this paper can be viewed as a Drinfeld double of the bosonisation of the Jordan plane. Its prime and primitive spectra are completely determined. As a corollary of this analysis it is shown that $\mathcal{D}$ satisfies the Dixmier-Moeglin Equivalence, leading to the formulation of a conjecture on the validity of this equivalence for pointed Noetherian Hopf algebras., Comment: Preliminary version; comments welcome

Understanding the neutron background is essential for determining the neutron yield from nuclear reactions. In the analysis presented here, the shadow bars are placed in front of neutron detectors to determine the energy dependent neutron background fractions. The measurement of neutron spectra with and without shadow bars is important to determine the neutron background more accurately. A novel pathway for the formation of multi-particle-multi-hole (np-mh) excited states in rare isotopes is reported from highly energy- and momentum-dissipative inelastic-scattering events measured in reactions of an intermediate-energy beam of 38Ca on a Be target. The negative-parity,complex-structure final states in 38Ca were observed following the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of events in the 9Be(38Ca,38Ca+gamma)X reaction in which the scattered projectile lost longitudinal momentum of order p = 700 MeV/c. The characteristics of the observed final states are discussed and found to be consistent with the formation of excited states involving the rearrangement of multiple nucleons in a single, highly-energetic projectile-target collision. Unlike the far-less dissipative, surface-grazing reactions usually exploited for the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of rare isotopes, these more energetic collisions appear to offer a practical pathway to nuclear-structure studies of more complex multi-particle configurations in rare isotopes - final states conventionally thought to be out of reach with high-luminosity fast-beam-induced reactions., Comment: Accepted in Phys Rev Lett. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2210.01106

The two main approaches to the study of irreducible representations of orders (via traces and Poisson orders) have so far been applied in a completely independent fashion. We define and study a natural compatibility relation between the two approaches leading to the notion of Poisson trace orders. It is proved that all regular and reduced traces are always compatible with any Poisson order structure. The modified discriminant ideals of all Poisson trace orders are proved to be Poisson ideals and the zero loci of discriminant ideals are shown to be unions of symplectic cores, under natural assumptions (maximal orders and Cayley--Hamilton algebras). A base change theorem for Poisson trace orders is proved. A broad range of Poisson trace orders are constructed based on the proved theorems: quantized universal enveloping algebras, quantum Schubert cell algebras and quantum function algebras at roots of unity, symplectic reflection algebras, 3 and 4-dimensional Sklyanin algebras, Drinfeld doubles of pre-Nichols algebras of diagonal type, and root of unity quantum cluster algebras., Comment: 24 pages

The neutron-deficient Ca isotopes continue to attract attention due to their importance for testing isospin symmetry and their relevance in capture reactions of interest for nova nucleosynthesis and the shape of light curves in Type I X-ray bursts. To date, spectroscopic information on 38,39 Ca is largely limited to data on lower-spin excited states. Here, we report in-beam {\gamma}-ray spectroscopy of complementary higher-spin, complex-structure states in 39 Ca populated in fast-beam-induced, momentum-dissipative processes leading to neutron pickup onto excited configurations of the projectile, 9 Be(38 Ca , 39 Ca + {\gamma})X. Such a dissipative reaction was recently characterized for the case of inelastic scattering of 38 Ca off 9 Be, 9 Be(38 Ca, 38 Ca + {\gamma})X. Additional data and discussion on the nuclear structure of 38 Ca is also presented. An explanation for the more-complex-structure states, populated with small cross sections in one-nucleon knockout reactions, and observed in the tails of their longitudinal momentum distributions, is also offered., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Systematic examination of fusion for $^{39,41,45,47}$K + $^{28}$Si and $^{36,44}$Ar + $^{28}$Si provides insight into the impact of neutron and proton exchange on fusion for nuclei at and near the N=20 and N=28 shells. Comparison of the reduced excitation functions reveals a marked difference between the behavior of open-shell and closed-shell systems. While coupled channels calculations provide a good description for the closed-shell nuclei they significantly under-predict the fusion cross-section for open-shell nuclei. The observed trends are examined in the context of a potential energy surface, including shell effects, and multi-nucleon exchange with consideration of Pauli-blocking., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Quantum information science is a growing field that promises to take computing into a new age of higher performance and larger scale computing as well as being capable of solving problems classical computers are incapable of solving. The outstanding issue in practical quantum computing today is scaling up the system while maintaining interconnectivity of the qubits and low error rates in qubit operations to be able to implement error correction and fault-tolerant operations. Trapped ion qubits offer long coherence times that allow error correction. However, error correction algorithms require large numbers of qubits to work properly. We can potentially create many thousands (or more) of qubits with long coherence states in a storage ring. For example, a circular radio-frequency quadrupole, which acts as a large circular ion trap and could enable larger scale quantum computing. Such a Storage Ring Quantum Computer (SRQC) would be a scalable and fault tolerant quantum information system, composed of qubits with very long coherence lifetimes. With computing demands potentially outpacing the supply of high-performance systems, quantum computing could bring innovation and scientific advances to particle physics and other DOE supported programs. Increased support of R$\&$D in large scale ion trap quantum computers would allow the timely exploration of this exciting new scalable quantum computer. The R$\&$D program could start immediately at existing facilities and would include the design and construction of a prototype SRQC. An in-flight beam of $^{16}$N was produced via the single-neutron adding ($d$,$p$) reaction in inverse kinematics at the recently upgraded Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS) in-flight system. The amount of the $^{16}$N beam which resided in its excited 0.120-MeV $J^{\pi}=0^-$ isomeric state (T$_{1/2}\approx5$ $\mu$s) was determined to be 40(5)% at a reaction energy of 7.9(3) MeV/$u$, and 24(2)% at a reaction energy of 13.2(2) MeV/$u$. The isomer measurements took place at an experimental station $\approx30$ m downstream of the production target and utilized an Al beam-stopping foil and a HPGe Clover detector. Composite $^{16}$N beam rate determinations were made at the experimental station and the focal plane of the Argonne in-flight radioactive ion-beam separator (RAISOR) with Si $\Delta$E-E telescopes. A Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) approach was coupled with the known spectroscopic information on $^{16}$N in order to estimate the relative $^{16}$N isomer yields and composite $^{16}$N beam rates. In addition to the observed reaction-energy dependence of the isomer fraction, a large sensitivity to angular acceptance of the recoils was also observed., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

The isomeric state of $^{16}$N was studied using the $^{16}$N$^{g,m}$($d$,$^3$He)~proton-removal reactions at \mbox{11.8~MeV/$u$} in inverse kinematics. The $^{16}$N beam, of which 24% was in the isomeric state, was produced using the ATLAS in-fight facility and delivered to the HELIOS spectrometer, which was used to analyze the $^{3}$He ions from the ($d$,$^{3}$He) reactions. The simultaneous measurement of reactions on both the ground and isomeric states, reduced the systematic uncertainties from the experiment and in the analysis. A direct and reliable comparison of the relative spectroscopic factors was made based on a Distorted-Wave Born Approximation approach. The experimental results suggest that the isomeric state of $^{16}$N is an excited neutron-halo state. The results can be understood through calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential model, which captures the effects of weak-binding., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figurs

A challenge preventing successful inverse kinematics measurements with heavy nuclei that are not fully stripped is identifying and tagging the beam particles. For this purpose, the HEavy ISotope Tagger (HEIST) has been developed. HEIST utilizes two micro-channel plate timing detectors to measure time of flight, a multi-sampling ion chamber to measure energy loss, and a high purity Ge detector to identify isomer decays and calibrate the isotope identification system. HEIST has successfully identified $^{198}$Pb and other nearby nuclei at energies of about 75 MeV/A. In the experiment discussed, a typical cut containing 89\% of all $^{198}$Pb$^{+80}$ in the beam had a purity of 86\%. We examine the issues of charge state contamination. To efficiently detect energetic light charged particles, it is common to use arrays of energy-loss telescopes involving two or more layers of detection media. As the energy of the particles increases, thicker layers are usually needed. However, carrying out measurements with thick-telescopes may require corrections for the losses due to nuclear reactions induced by the incident particles on nuclei within the detector and for the scattering of incident particles out of the detector, without depositing their full energy in the active material. In this paper, we develop a method for measuring such corrections and determine the reaction and out-scattering losses for data measured with the silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes of the newly developed HiRA10 array. The extracted efficiencies are in good agreement with model predictions using the GEANT4 reaction loss algorithm for Z=1 and Z=2 isotopes. After correcting for the HiRA10 geometry, a general function that describes the efficiencies from the reaction loss in CsI(Tl) crystals as a function of range is obtained., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Excited states in 13O were investigated using inelastic scattering of an E/A=69.5-MeV 13O beam off of a 9Be target. The excited states were identified in the invariant-mass spectra of the decay products. Both single proton and sequential two-proton decays of the excited states were examined. For a number of the excited states, the protons were emitted with strong anisotropy where emissions transverse to the beam axis are favored. The measured proton-decay angular distributions were compared to predictions from distorted-wave born-approximation (DWBA) calculations of the spin alignment which was shown to be largely independent of the excitation mechanism. The deduced $^{13}$O level scheme is compared to ab initio no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) predictions. The lowest-energy excited states decay isotropically consistent with predictions of strong proton 1s1/2 structure. Above these states in the level scheme, we observed a number of higher-spin states not predicted within the model. Possibly these are associated with rotational bands built on deformed cluster configurations predicted by antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) calculations. The spin alignment mechanism is shown to be useful for making spin assignments and may have widespread use.

We report on the first in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of the proton-dripline nucleus $^{40}$Sc using two-nucleon pickup onto an intermediate-energy rare-isotope beam of $^{38}$Ca. The $^{9}$Be($^{38}$Ca,$^{40}$Sc$+\gamma$)X reaction at 60.9 MeV/nucleon mid-target energy selectively populates states in $^{40}$Sc for which the transferred proton and neutron couple to high orbital angular momentum. In turn, due to angular-momentum selection rules in proton emission and the nuclear structure and energetics of $^{39}$Ca, such states in $^{40}$Sc then exhibit $\gamma$-decay branches although they are well above the proton separation energy. This work uniquely complements results from particle spectroscopy following charge-exchange reactions on $^{40}$Ca as well as $^{40}$Ti EC/$\beta^+$ decay which both display very different selectivities. The population and $\gamma$-ray decay of the previously known first $(5^-)$ state at 892 keV and the observation of a new level at 2744 keV are discussed in comparison to the mirror nucleus and shell-model calculations. On the experimental side, this work shows that high-resolution in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy is possible with new generation Ge arrays for reactions induced by rare-isotope beams on the level of a few $\mu$b of cross section., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The neutron total cross sections $\sigma_{tot}$ of $^{16,18}$O, $^{58,64}$Ni, $^{103}$Rh, and $^{112,124}$Sn have been measured at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) from low to intermediate energies (3 $\leq E_{lab} \leq$ 450 MeV) by leveraging waveform-digitizer technology. The $\sigma_{tot}$ relative differences between isotopes are presented, revealing additional information about the isovector components needed for an accurate optical-model description away from stability. Digitizer-enabled $\sigma_{tot}$-measurement techniques are discussed and a series of uncertainty-quantified dispersive optical model (DOM) analyses using these new data is presented, validating the use of the DOM for modeling light systems ($^{16,18}$O) and systems with open neutron shells ($^{58,64}$Ni and $^{112,124}$Sn). The valence-nucleon spectroscopic factors extracted for each isotope reaffirm the usefulness of high-energy proton reaction cross sections for characterizing depletion from the mean-field expectation., Comment: 28 pages, 20 figures

Using the waveforms from a digital electronic system, an offline analysis technique on pulse shape discrimination (PSD) has been developed to improve the neutron-gamma separation in a bar-shaped NE-213 scintillator that couples to a photomultiplier tube (PMT) at each end. The new improved method, called the ``valued-assigned PSD'' (VPSD), assigns a normalized fitting residual to every waveform as the PSD value. This procedure then facilitates the incorporation of longitudinal position dependence of the scintillator, which further enhances the PSD capability of the detector system. In this paper, we use radiation emitted from an AmBe neutron source to demonstrate that the resulting neutron-gamma identification has been much improved when compared to the traditional technique that uses the geometric mean of light outputs from both PMTs. The new method has also been modified and applied to a recent experiment at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) that uses an analog electronic system., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

The organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites are composed of organic molecules imbedded in an inorganic framework. The compounds with general formula CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbX$_{3}$ (MAPbX$_{2}$) display large photovoltaic efficiencies for halogens $X$=Cl, Br, and I in a wide variety of sample geometries and preparation methods. The organic cation and inorganic framework are bound by hydrogen bonds that tether the molecules to the halide anions, and this has been suggested to be important to the optoelectronic properties. We have studied the effects of this bonding using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy to measure the molecular dynamics in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbCl$_3$ (MAPbCl$_3$). Low-energy/high-resolution neutron backscattering reveals thermally-activated molecular dynamics with a characteristic temperature of $\sim$ 95\,K. At this same temperature, higher-energy neutron spectroscopy indicates the presence of an anomalous broadening in energy (reduced lifetime) associated with the molecular vibrations. By contrast, neutron powder diffraction shows that a spatially long-range structural phase transitions occurs at 178\,K (cubic $\rightarrow$ tetragonal) and 173\,K (tetragonal $\rightarrow$ orthorhombic). The large difference between these two temperature scales suggests that the molecular and inorganic lattice dynamics in MAPbCl$_3$ are actually decoupled. With the assumption that underlying physical mechanisms do not change with differing halogens in the organic-inorganic perovskites, we speculate that the energy scale most relevant to the photovoltaic properties of the lead-halogen perovskites is set by the lead-halide bond, not by the hydrogen bond., Comment: (10 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Physical Review Materials)

Excited states in $^{14}$O have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally, these states were produced via neutron-knockout reactions with a fast $^{15}$O beam and the invariant-mass technique was employed to isolate the 1$p$ and 2$p$ decay channels and determine their branching ratios. The spectrum of excited states was also calculated with the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum that treats bound and scattering states in a unified model. By comparing energies, widths and decay branching patterns, spin and parity assignments for all experimentally observed levels below 8 MeV are made. This includes the location of the second 2$^{+}$ state that we find is in near degeneracy with the third 0$^{+}$ state. An interesting case of sequential 2$p$ decay through a pair of degenerate $^{13}$N excited states with opposite parities was found where the interference between the two sequential decay pathways produces an unusual relative-angle distribution between the emitted protons., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures

Particle-decaying states of the light nuclei $^{11,12}$N and $^{12}$O were studied using the invariant-mass method. The decay energies and intrinsic widths of a number of states were measured, and the momentum correlations of three-body decaying states were considered. A second 2$p$-decaying 2$^+$ state of $^{12}$O was observed for the first time, and a higher energy $^{12}$O state was observed in the 4$p$+2$\alpha$ decay channel. This 4$p$+2$\alpha$ channel also contains contributions from fission-like decay paths, including $^6$Be$_{g.s.}$+$^{6}$Be$_{g.s.}$. Analogs to these states in $^{12}$O were found in $^{12}$N in the 2$p$+$^{10}$B and 2$p$+$\alpha$+$^6$Li channels. The momentum correlations for the prompt 2$p$ decay of $^{12}$O$_{g.s.}$ were found to be nearly identical to those of $^{16}$Ne$_{g.s.}$, and the correlations for the new 2$^+$ state were found to be consistent with sequential decay through excited states in $^{11}$N. The momentum correlations for the 2$^+_1$ state in $^{12}$O provide a new value for the $^{11}$N ground-state energy. The states in $^{12}$N/$^{12}$O that belong to the $A$=12 isobaric sextet do not deviate from the quadratic isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) form., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables, tables corrected

The light output produced by light ions (Z<=4) in CsI(Tl) crystals is studied over a wide range of detected energies (E<=300 MeV). Energy-light calibration data sets are obtained with the 10 cm crystals in the recently upgraded High-Resolution Array (HiRA10). We use proton recoil data from 40,48Ca + CH2 at 28 MeV/u, 56.6 MeV/u, 39 MeV/u and 139.8 MeV/u and data from a dedicated experiment with direct low-energy beams. We also use the punch through points of p, d, and t particles from 40,48Ca + 58,64Ni, 112,124Sn collisions reactions at 139.8 MeV/u. Non-linearities, arising in particular from Tl doping and light collection efficiency in the CsI crystals, are found to significantly affect the light output and therefore the calibration of the detector response for light charged particles, especially the hydrogen isotopes. A new empirical parametrization of the hydrogen light output, L(E,Z=1,A), is proposed to account for the observed effects. Results are found to be consistent for all 48 CsI(Tl) crystals in a cluster of 12 HiRA10 telescopes.

The structure of the extremely proton-rich nucleus $^{11}_{~8}$O$_3$, the mirror of the two-neutron halo nucleus $^{11}_{~3}$Li$_8$, has been studied experimentally for the first time. Following two-neutron knockout reactions with a $^{13}$O beam, the $^{11}$O decay products were detected after two-proton emission and used to construct an invariant-mass spectrum. A broad peak of width $\sim$3\,MeV was observed. Within the Gamow coupled-channel approach, it was concluded that this peak is a multiplet with contributions from the four-lowest $^{11}$O resonant states: $J^{\pi}$=3/2$^-_1$, 3/2$^-_2$, 5/2$^+_1$, and 5/2$^+_2$. The widths and configurations of these states show strong, non-monotonic dependencies on the depth of the $p$-$^9$C potential. This unusual behavior is due to the presence of a broad threshold resonant state in $^{10}$N, which is an analog of the virtual state in $^{10}$Li in the presence of the Coulomb potential. After optimizing the model to the data, only a moderate isospin asymmetry between ground states of $^{11}$O and $^{11}$Li was found., Comment: 6 pages, three figures

Neutron transfer reactions with fast secondary beams of $^{17}$Ne, $^{15}$O, and $^9$C have been studied with the HiRA and CAESAR arrays. Excited states of $^{18}$Ne, $^{16}$O, and $^{10}$C in the continuum have been identified using invariant-mass spectroscopy. The best experimental resolution of these states is achieved by selecting events where the decay fragments are emitted transverse to the beam direction. We have confirmed a number of spin assignments made in previous works for the negative-parity states of $^{18}$Ne. In addition we have found new higher-lying excited states in $^{16}$O and $^{18}$Ne, some of which fission into two ground-state $^8$Be fragments. Finally for $^{10}$C, a new excited state was observed. These transfer reactions were found to leave the remnant of the $^9$Be target nuclei at very high excitation energies and maybe associated with the pickup of a deeply-bound $^9$Be neutron., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures

The relaxor PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ (PMN) has received attention due to its potential applications as a piezoelectric when doped with PbTiO$_{3}$ (PT). Previous results have found that there are two phases existing in the system, one linked to the near-surface regions of the sample, the other in the bulk. However, the exact origin of these two phases is unclear. In this paper, depth dependant analysis results from negative muon implantation experiments are presented. It is shown that the Pb content is constant throughout all depths probed in the sample, but the Mg and Nb content changes in the near-surface region below 100$\mu$m. At a implantation depth of 60$\mu$m, it is found that there is a 25% increase in Mg content, with a simultaneous 5% decrease in Nb content in order to maintain charge neutrality. In this work, two particular properties of the position-sensitive, thick silicon detectors (known as the "E" detectors) in the High Resolution Array (HiRA) are investigated: the thickness of the dead layer on the front of the detector, and the overall thickness of the detector itself. The dead layer thickness for each E detector in HiRA is extracted using a measurement of alpha particles emitted from a $^{212}$Pb pin source placed close to the detector surface. This procedure also allows for energy calibrations of the E detectors, which are otherwise inaccessible for alpha source calibration as each one is sandwiched between two other detectors. The E detector thickness is obtained from a combination of elastically scattered protons and an energy-loss calculation method. Lead-halide organic-inorganic perovskites consist of an inorganic host framework with an organic molecule occupying the interstitial space. The structure and dynamics of these materials have been heavily studied recently due to interest in their exceptional photovoltaic properties. We combine inelastic neutron scattering, Raman spectroscopy, and quasielastic neutron scattering to study the temperature dependent dynamics of the molecular cation in CH3NH3PbBr3. By applying high resolution quasielastic neutron scattering, we confirm the [CH3NH3]+ ions are static in the low temperature orthorhombic phase yet become dynamic above 150 K where a series of structural transitions occur. This molecular melting is accompanied by a temporal broadening in the intra-molecular modes probed through high energy inelastic spectroscopy. Simultaneous Raman measurements, a strictly |Q|=0 probe, are suggestive that this broadening is due to local variations in the crystal field environment around the hydrogen atoms. We report the first measurement of the fusion excitation functions for $^{39,47}$K + $^{28}$Si at near-barrier energies. Evaporation residues resulting from the fusion process were identified by direct measurement of their energy and time-of-flight with high geometric efficiency. At the lowest incident energy, the cross-section measured for the neutron-rich $^{47}$K induced reaction is ~6 times larger than that of the $\beta$-stable system. Recently acquired WFC3 UV (F275W and F336W) imaging mosaics under the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) combined with archival ACS data of M51 are used to study the young star cluster (YSC) population of this interacting system. Our newly extracted source catalogue contains 2834 cluster candidates, morphologically classified to be compact and uniform in colour, for which ages, masses and extinction are derived. In this first work we study the main properties of the YSC population of the whole galaxy, considering a mass-limited sample. Both luminosity and mass functions follow a power law shape with slope -2, but at high luminosities and masses a dearth of sources is observed. The analysis of the mass function suggests that it is best fitted by a Schechter function with slope -2 and a truncation mass at $1.00\pm0.12\times10^5\ M_\odot$. Through Monte Carlo simulations we confirm this result and link the shape of the luminosity function to the presence of a truncation in the mass function. A mass limited age function analysis, between 10 and 200 Myr, suggests that the cluster population is undergoing only moderate disruption. We observe little variation in the shape of the mass function at masses above $1\times10^4\ M_\odot$, over this age range. The fraction of star formation happening in the form of bound clusters in M51 is $\sim20\%$ in the age range 10 to 100 Myr and little variation is observed over the whole range from 1 to 200 Myr., Comment: 25 pages, 19 figures, 10 tables.
