Recent research has indicated high economic and environmental costs of human paper usage. Technologies have been developed to reduce consumers' paper use behavior, including mechanical dispensers that institute a delay between opportunities to obtain each consecutive unit. However, there is no empirical evidence that these dispensers or delays reduce paper use. In Experiment 1, implementing a delay between paper-unit deliveries using mechanical dispensers in a university cafe resulted in a significant decrease in units per person, material per person, and cost per person, compared to free-access dispensers. In Experiment 2, a relatively long delay was more effective than a short delay in reducing paper consumption in a laboratory experiment using mechanical dispensers. These results indicate that delays could be used to decrease paper use in many contexts on a larger scale. More research is necessary to determine the underlying behavioral mechanisms responsible for the observed reduction and the cost-benefit relationship under different circumstances. Background: Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), a proposed indicator of ovarian follicle reserve in adults, has not been characterized in pediatric and adolescent females by race and/or ethnicity. Objectives: To describe AMH levels in healthy American girls and determine the influence of age and race/ethnicity on AMH. Subjects: Subjects aged 10-21 years were recruited from primary care settings and emergency departments. Race/ethnicity was characterized as White, Black or Hispanic. Methods: Serum for AMH levels (ng/mL) was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Thirty-one White, 60 Black and 24 Hispanic subjects were recruited. Mean AMH levels were 3.19 ng/mL (22.8 pmol/L) (SD 2.12) for Whites, 3.25 ng/mL (23.2 pmol/L) (SD 2.23) for Blacks and 2.97 ng/mL (21.2 pmol/L) (SD 1.75) for Hispanics. ANCOVA showed no difference in AMH levels among race/ethnicities, controlling for age (p=0.91). Age was significantly associated with AMH (p<0.001, R2=0.12). Comparing sustained attention and inhibitory control among youth with sickle cell syndrome (SCS) and nondiseased sibling controls, this study found significant differences in multiple components of attention and inhibitory control as a function of chronological age. Older SCS youth were found to have increased attention and reflectivity. Although it has been argued that SCS youth without overt neurological impairments might evidence microvascular infarction, the present study, which employed commonly utilized neurocognitive and behavioral measures, does not lend support to the notion of generalized deficits in the absence of specific laboratory findings. Disease parameters including hemoglobin levels, days hospitalized, and emergency room visits were not significantly correlated with performance on any of the measures. Within the limitations of this particular study, results were interpreted to refute the notion of disease-related neurocognitive impairments for SCS youth. Further, the development of attentional skills for SCS youth is suggested to proceed similarly to that of normally developing youth. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We describe a 15-year-old black boy with hemoglobin S-C disease living in Atlanta (altitude 1,034 ft), with no prior history of aircraft or mountain travel, who developed splenic infarction. The clinical picture was characterized by severe left upper quadrant abdominal pain, fever, splenomegaly, and hematologic and scintigraphic evidence of functional asplenia. The diagnosis was suggested by liver/spleen scintigraphy and further confirmed by ultrasonography and computerized tomography (CT) of the spleen. Treatment consisted of analgesics, intravenous fluids, and short-term antibiotic therapy. The child recovered without sequelae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
