El grup de Thompson fou el primer exemple de grup simple infinit (finitament presentat). El grup de Grigorchuk fou el primer exemple de grup de creixement intermedi (entre polinomi i exponencial). Els dos grups són grups d'homeomorfismes de la frontera arbre binari infinit. Estudiem les generalitzacions F(k) i F(tau) de F i com estan immerses les unes en les altres. In this paper, we consider the T - and V -versions, Tt and Vt , of the irrational slope Thompson group Ft considered in J. Burillo, B. Nucinkis and L. Reeves [An irrational-slope Thompson's group, Publ. Mat. 65 (2021), 809–839]. We give infinite presentations for these groups and show how they can be represented by tree-pair diagrams similar to those for T and V . We also show that Tt and Vt have index- 2 normal subgroups, unlike their original Thompson counterparts T and V . The purpose of this paper is to study the properties of the irrational-slope Thompson’s group Ft introduced by Cleary in [11]. We construct presentations, both finite and infinite, and we describe its combinatorial structure using binary trees. We show that its commutator group is simple. Finally, inspired by the case of Thompson’s group F, we define a unique normal form for the elements of the group and study the metric properties for the elements based on this normal form. In this work, based on a Brin's article, we explain the structure of automorphism group of F, via a short exact sequence involving the subgroup of automorphisms of F together with the product of two copies of Thompson s group T. We will use a key theorem by McCleary and Rubin to realize each automorphism as conjugation by a homeomorphism in R. The previous short exact sequence will be obtained by just analyzing which shape these normalizing homeomorphisms must have. A crucial property of F, which we need to prove this theorem by McCleary and Rubin, and which we will use along all this work, is its k-transitivity on dyadic numbers for all k.

Amenability is a group theoretical property consisting in the existence of a finite measure defined on all subsets of the group. The concept is motivated and introduced, and some criteria, characterizations and generalizations are presented. Then, this property is studied in a particular group of homeomorphisms of the interval [0,1], Thompson's group F. This group is introduced, along with its most relevant properties, and some possible Folner sequences are proposed and studied.

The aim of this master thesis is to study the relation between the real rank of uniform Roe algebras and the asymptotic dimension of the space with which they are defined. As a consequence of some recent results on the subject, the study will be focused on uniform Roe algebras arising from countable group metric spaces.

In this article we examine the normal subgroup structure of these groups. Two important cases of our results are the groups H and . We show that the group H of piecewise projective homeomorphisms of has the property that is simple and that every proper quotient of H is metabelian. We establish simplicity of the commutator subgroup of the group , which admits a presentation with 3 generators and 9 relations. Further, we show that every proper quotient of is abelian. We describe the automorphism groups and the abstract commensurators of Houghton’s groups. Then we give sharp estimates for the word metric of these groups and deduce that the commensurators embed into the corresponding quasi-isometry groups. We also exhibit orbit undecidable subgroups of Aut(F), and give a proof that Aut(F) and Aut+(F) are orbit decidable provided a certain conjecture on Thompson’s group T is true. By using general criteria introduced by Bogopolski, Martino and Ventura in [5], we construct a family of free extensions of F where the conjugacy problem is unsolvable. The main objective of this bachelor thesis is to prove Banach-Tarski theorem. The theorem states that a ball in a 3-dimensional space can be split into finitely many pieces that can be rearranged to form two balls, each of the same size as the first one. The concept of amenability, which underlies the paradox, will be explained and characterized as well. We will also classify some groups in terms of amenability. Proving that groups in certain classes are all amenable and those in others classes are not is the approach that we will take to address this issue.

En aquest treball es fa una introducció al creixement en grups, donant la definició, algunes propietats i exemples. Es presenta el grup de Grigorchuk G com a subgrup dels automorfismes de l'arbre binary infinit, i es prova que té creixement intermedi (ni polinòmic ni exponencial), esdevenint un contraexemple per a la conjectura de Milnor i per al problema de Burnside sobre grups periòdics. Finalment, es proposen algunes generalitzacions d'aquest grup i s'analitzen les similituds i les diferències amb G, explorant l'ordre d'alguns elements i concloent algunes conjectures sobre el seu creixement.

El tema principal de este trabajo es la introducción del grupo F de Thompson, que fue definido el 1965 por Richard Thompson. Nuestro objetivo principal es el estudio del grupo F de Thompson, partiendo de su definición y algunas de sus propiedades. Después, interpretaremos sus elementos como pares de diagramas de árbol y definiremos en ellos la composición. Posteriormente, estudiaremos la presentación infinita de este grupo y la unicidad de la forma normal para cualquier elemento f de F. Por último, demostraremos que F admite una presentación finita pese a ser un grupo infinito, mostrando una presentación con dos generadores y dos relaciones.

El objetivo de este proyecto es estudiar la estructura y la presentación de los grupos de trenzas. En la primera parte proporcionaremos un repaso esencial de forma que los conceptos usados en el proyecto estarán previamente explicados. En la segunda parte introduciremos la definición de n-trenza, así como una serie de conceptos que definen su estructura como grupo. Y finalmente, en la última parte, estudiaremos la estructura del grupo de trenzas a través de estos conceptos previos. Introduciremos el subgrupo de trenzas puras y su estructura como producto semidirecto iterado de grupos libres obtenido mediante el proceso de peinado de trenzas puras. Este subgrupo jugará un papel fundamental en la demostración de la completitud de las relaciones que definen la presentación del grupo de trenzas ofrecida por Artin.

This note records some observations concerning geodesic growth functions. If a nilpotent group is not virtually cyclic then it has exponential geodesic growth with respect to all finite generating sets. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és estudiar la relació que hi ha entre el Teorema dels Quatre Colors i els grups de Thompson. Principalment, es construeix el procés que permet passar d'un mapa a un (o més) elements del grup F, i com a partir d'un element del grup en podem obtenir un mapa. També es veu en quin sentit això permet definir una equivalència en el sentit de les coloracions. Després, usant aquesta equivalència que s'ha construït, es realitzen alguns intents de demostració que malgrat no funcionar, ajuden a entendre aquesta relació i a entendre el Grup de Thompson. S'estudia per quin motiu aquests intents fracassen, i es veuen possibles vies que resten obertes en aquest sentit. . Els elements del grup de Thompson es poden representar amb arbres binaris. Per altra banda, per un famós teorema de Tait de 1880, el teorema dels quatre colors és equivalent a demostrar que tot graf cúbic i planar és 3-aresta-colorable. Els arbres binaris dels elements del grup de Thompson presenten estructura de graf cúbic planar, i per tant poden ser susceptibles de ser utilitzats per estudiar el teorema dels quatre colors. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és entendre la relació que hi pugui haver entre el teorema dels quatre colors, el teorema de Tait i el grup de Thompson. Entendre bé i exposar l'equivalència entre els dos teoremes, i la seva reescriptura, si s'escau, en termes del grup. Jacob Nielsen va ser el primer a estudiar el grup d'automorfismes del grup lliure de rang finit el 1917 i, de fet, també va ser el primer en donar-ne un conjunt de generadors, el 1918. Alguns anys més tard,el 1936, Henry Constantine Whitehead va donar un segon conjunt de generadors del mateix grup. En aquest treball s'estudien aquests dos sistemes de generadors del grup lliure, així com els algorismes que se'n deriven. A més de les demostracions necessàries del fet que els dos conjunt són generadors i de les diferents característiques, el treball també conté una comparativa dels algorismes i diversos exemples.. Estudi dels sistemes de generadors del grup d'automorfismes del grup lliure. Els sistemes de generadors clàssics del grup Aut(Fn) són deguts a Nielsen i Whitehead, i daten de la primera meitat del segle XX. La demostració de que són sistemes de generadors es basen en dos algorismes de reducció de paraules aplicant trnasformacions basades en els automorfismes generadors. El treball consisteix en l'estudi d'aquests algorismes amb tot detall i la reescriptura en llenguatge modern; la relació de l'algorisme de Whitehead amb les longituds de les paraules imatge dels generadors; la constatació amb exemples adequats de que els generadors de Nielsen no satisfan el teorema de Whitehead; i una estimació del nombre de passos necessaris per efectuar aquests algorismes en alguns automorfismes.

In this paper it is proved that the pure braided Thompson’s group BF admits a bi-order, analog to the bi-order of the pure braid groups.

En aquest llibre s'ofereix una introducció a la probabilitat i a l'estadística adaptada a l'alumnat de primer curs d'una enginyeria tècnica, especialment les enginyeries relacionades amb les tecnologies de la informació. L'objectiu principal del llibre és que l'alumne assoleixi un coneixement bàsic i alhora suficient de les eines probabilistes i estadístiques que pugui necessitar en la seva futura carrera professional com a enginyer. El llibre es divideix en dues parts ben delimitades. La primera està dedicada al càlcul de probabilitats, en què s'introdueixen les eines necessàries per a l'estudi dels fenòmens probabilístics. En particular, s'introdueixen les variables aleatòries, tant discretes com contínues, i es dóna molta importància a l'estudi de la normal com a variable aleatòria fonamental. En la part estadística, s'exposen les eines bàsiques dels estudis estadístics: els estimadors i els intervals de confiança, els tests d'hipòtesi i la regressió lineal. Cada capítol es complementa amb una llista extensa de problemes proposats.
