Antifascists have developed action-oriented principles and practices for collective resistance to fascism. In this article, we discuss antifascism as "praxis," which is the nexus of theory and practice through collective reflection and action. Antifascist praxis can inform developmental science at individual and contextual levels of analysis. For the study of individual developmental trajectories, we examine how antifascist praxis can inform research to stop fascist recruitment of youth and counter-recruit youth into liberation movements. For the study of developmental contexts, we use the example of family separation to examine how antifascist praxis can inform research to identify fascist threats and support collective action against fascist violence. We also present next steps for developing a field of scholarship in which communities of developmental scientists engage in antifascist praxis. As developmental scientists, we must see ourselves as part of - not objectively disconnected from - broader mass movements building power against fascism and pursuing liberation for all.

We report the findings of a multi-language and multi-lab investigation of young infants' ability to discriminate lexical tones as a function of their native language, age and language experience, as well as of tone properties. Given the high prevalence of lexical tones across human languages, understanding lexical tone acquisition is fundamental for comprehensive theories of language learning. While there are some similarities between the developmental course of lexical tone perception and that of vowels and consonants, findings for lexical tones tend to vary greatly across different laboratories. To reconcile these differences and to assess the developmental trajectory of native and non-native perception of tone contrasts, this study employed a single experimental paradigm with the same two pairs of Cantonese tone contrasts (perceptually similar vs. distinct) across 13 laboratories in Asia-Pacific, Europe and North-America testing 5-, 10- and 17-month-old monolingual (tone, pitch-accent, non-tone) and bilingual (tone/non-tone, non-tone/non-tone) infants. Across the age range and language backgrounds, infants who were not exposed to Cantonese showed robust discrimination of the two non-native lexical tone contrasts. Contrary to this overall finding, the statistical model assessing native discrimination by Cantonese-learning infants failed to yield significant effects. These findings indicate that lexical tone sensitivity is maintained from 5 to 17 months in infants acquiring tone and non-tone languages, challenging the generalisability of the existing theoretical accounts of perceptual narrowing in the first months of life.

There is a long-standing debate in the literature about the benefits that acoustic components of Infant Directed Speech (IDS) might have for infants' language acquisition. One of the highly contested features is vowel space expansion, which refers to the enlargement of the acoustic space between the corner vowels /i, u, a/ in IDS compared to Adult Directed Speech (ADS). Some evidence indicates that vowel space expansion in IDS facilitates infants' speech perception, thus promoting language development, whereas other studies have questioned these benefits and have proposed that any processing benefits of IDS are due to its other prosodic features such as exaggerated and variable pitch. This study aimed to tease apart the effects of vowel space expansion and prosodic exaggeration in IDS on 18-month-old infants' speech processing. Using a looking-while-listening paradigm, two between-subjects conditions were compared: Exaggerated Pitch (with exaggerated pitch height and range, but without vowel space expansion) and Expanded Vowel Space (with vowel space expansion, but no exaggeration in pitch height and range). Our results showed that infants recognized the meanings of the words more accurately in the Expanded Vowel Space compared to the Exaggerated Pitch condition. This suggests that vowel space expansion in IDS facilitates infants' lexical processing even when it does not cooccur with the prosodic exaggeration typical of IDS.

The hospital setting may be especially difficult for pediatric patients on the autism spectrum and their families compared to those not on the spectrum. Child life specialists are healthcare professionals specifically trained to support parents and their children and help prepare them for hospital procedures. Because of this specialized skill set, these professionals likely have a wealth of expertise to share relevant to caring for autistic patients. This study aimed to understand 21 child life specialists' experiences working with patients on the spectrum. Our findings highlighted the following themes: Parents are the Experts, Proactive and Individualized Care, Disclosure, and Hospital-Wide Suggestions to Improve Patient Care. We discuss the practice implications of these findings on the healthcare experiences of pediatric patients on the spectrum.

Children's fears have received scholarly attention for well over 50 years. A considerable amount of literature has focused on such fear variables as fear intensity and fear prevalence scores and age and gender differences. We used meta-analysis to systematically review the findings related to gender differences in children's fear intensity scores and fear prevalence scores and to examine the moderator effect of sample, year of study, and type of instrument on gender differences. Research studies that used the Fear Survey Schedule for Children (FSSC) or an updated version of the FSSC, were included in this meta-analysis. The findings from 58 intensity and 17 prevalence studies suggest that females have 11.4% higher total fear scores than males and females have 7.2% more fears than males. Results of sub-group analyses indicate that moderator variables of sample, year of publication, and type/version of FSSC cause significant variability in gender differences.

This paper evaluated Lissamine Green (LG) conjunctival staining as a valid, stable and modifiable endpoint for both clinical practice and clinical trials.Methods: Screening and pre-randomization data from two identically designed clinical trials for DED resulted in a pooled dataset of 494 subjects. Inclusion was based on reported symptoms, lissamine green (LG) conjunctival staining, Fluorescein (Fl) corneal and conjunctival staining, and Schirmer’s Test (ST). Outcome measures were assessed based on the modifiability of LG staining to exposure to a Controlled Adverse Environment (CAE®), correlation of LG to Fl staining, relative variation of LG staining scores and Schirmer test scores, and the correlation of LG staining with symptom scores.Results: The modifiability of LG conjunctival staining to environmental exposure was demonstrated, with nasal LG and FL staining displaying the most similar percent change. Nasal LG conjunctival staining scores for subjects with ST scores of less than 8mm were significantly higher than for subjects with ST greater than 8mm. LG staining scores were more consistent (25% change from baseline threshold) than ST scores. Finally, statistically significant correlations were found between LG staining and a number of symptom scores.Conclusion: This evaluation demonstrates the superiority of the utilization of a clinical endpoint focused on ocular surface damage. The reproducibility and modifiability of LG conjunctival staining to controlled adverse environment, coupled with its significant correlation with symptoms, positions it as an exemplary clinical sign endpoint for clinical management and in clinical trials. Abstract Many of the world's iconic, endangered and endemic species rely on large, contiguous landscapes for their survival. In the US West, working ranches are integral to large landscape conservation goals and there are numerous influences on ranchers' conservation actions, including their relational values, perceived self‐efficacy and property rights concerns. Using survey data from 681 ranchers in eastern Idaho and western Montana, we sought to answer the question: How do relational values, property rights orientations, perceived efficacy and public lands dependence affect reported conservation actions on private ranch lands? Conservation adoption varied widely by action, with invasive plant removal having the highest (92%) and conifer removal the lowest (21%) rates of adoption. Conservation adoption was higher among ranchers who believe they are responsible for conserving nature, believe their land should be used to provide environmental benefits to the region, have higher perceived self‐efficacy, lower property rights concerns and higher incomes. Programmes encouraging the adoption of conservation on private lands could benefit from message framing that resonates with the worldviews of landowners and land managers. Abstract Background Maximizing the efficiency to screen amyloid-positive individuals in asymptomatic and non-demented aged population using blood-based biomarkers is essential for future success of clinical trials in the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In this study, we elucidate the utility of combination of plasma amyloid-β (Aβ)-related biomarkers and tau phosphorylated at threonine 217 (p-tau217) to predict abnormal Aβ-positron emission tomography (PET) in the preclinical and prodromal AD. Methods We designed the cross-sectional study including two ethnically distinct cohorts, the Japanese trial-ready cohort for preclinica and prodromal AD (J-TRC) and the Swedish BioFINDER study. J-TRC included 474 non-demented individuals (CDR 0: 331, CDR 0.5: 143). Participants underwent plasma Aβ and p-tau217 assessments, and Aβ-PET imaging. Findings in J-TRC were replicated in the BioFINDER cohort including 177 participants (cognitively unimpaired: 114, mild cognitive impairment: 63). In both cohorts, plasma Aβ(1-42) (Aβ42) and Aβ(1-40) (Aβ40) were measured using immunoprecipitation-MALDI TOF mass spectrometry (Shimadzu), and p-tau217 was measured with an immunoassay on the Meso Scale Discovery platform (Eli Lilly). Results Aβ-PET was abnormal in 81 participants from J-TRC and 71 participants from BioFINDER. Plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio and p-tau217 individually showed moderate to high accuracies when detecting abnormal Aβ-PET scans, which were improved by combining plasma biomarkers and by including age, sex and APOE genotype in the models. In J-TRC, the highest AUCs were observed for the models combining p-tau217/Aβ42 ratio, APOE, age, sex in the whole cohort (AUC = 0.936), combining p-tau217, Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio, APOE, age, sex in the CDR 0 group (AUC = 0.948), and combining p-tau217/Aβ42 ratio, APOE, age, sex in the CDR 0.5 group (AUC = 0.955), respectively. Each subgroup results were replicated in BioFINDER, where the highest AUCs were seen for models combining p-tau217, Aβ42/40 ratio, APOE, age, sex in cognitively unimpaired (AUC = 0.938), and p-tau217/Aβ42 ratio, APOE, age, sex in mild cognitive impairment (AUC = 0.914). Conclusions Combination of plasma Aβ-related biomarkers and p-tau217 exhibits high performance when predicting Aβ-PET positivity. Adding basic clinical information (i.e., age, sex, APOE ε genotype) improved the prediction in preclinical AD, but not in prodromal AD. Combination of Aβ-related biomarkers and p-tau217 could be highly useful for pre-screening of participants in clinical trials of preclinical and prodromal AD.

The impact of autism on the family is an area of study that merits further research attention. Much of the existing literature has focused on the parent perspective, with less emphasis on the experiences of other family members, particularly non-autistic siblings. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of a sample of nine 8- to 17-year-old non-autistic siblings of children and youth on the autism spectrum. We interviewed siblings and analysed transcripts using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Our results revealed the following Group Experiential Themes: (1) "Role disparities, different expectations"; (2) "Connection and disconnection"; and (3) "Our family is (extra)ordinary." Our study findings highlight the unique and collective perspectives of siblings regarding their brother or sister on the spectrum within the broader family dynamic. We discuss the implications of these results on siblings of autistic children and youth.

BackgroundAn urgent need exists to rapidly screen potential therapeutics for severe COVID-19 or other emerging pathogens associated with high morbidity and mortality.MethodsUsing an adaptive platform design created to rapidly evaluate investigational agents, hospitalised patients with severe COVID-19 requiring ≥6 L/min oxygen were randomised to either a backbone regimen of dexamethasone and remdesivir alone (controls) or backbone plus one open-label investigational agent. Patients were enrolled to the arms described between July 30, 2020 and June 11, 2021 in 20 medical centres in the United States. Pacific fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus velifera), once the most abundant cetacean species in British Columbia (BC), were also one of the most heavily targeted by commercial whaling. Much of what we know about their phenology and ecology is from catch records, but their current status has not yet been summarized in Canadian waters. Here, we collated evidence from dedicated surveys, opportunistic sightings, and passive acoustic records that had not been reported before and reviewed them in the context of past data. This was to add new findings to what is known, and to establish if the population was showing signs of recovery. This is particularly relevant considering discussions of downlisting their population status in Canada from endangered to threatened. We then asked if this rebounding was consistent with what is known about pre-whaling presence and movement patterns, or if changes in whale distribution reflected altered oceanic regimes, prey availability, or increased anthropogenic pressures. The evidence suggested that fin whale populations in the northeast Pacific Ocean are repopulating areas along the BC coast recognized as part of their historic range. However, they are recovering in a different ocean than they were removed from, which makes them increasingly vulnerable to new anthropogenic threats. The sightings data suggested that, at least for the west coast of Vancouver Island, this repopulation has occurred over a relatively short period, with fin whales still absent from regular surveys as recent as the early 2000’s. The recent acoustic recordings suggested their presence is not transitory, but that fin whales may be using locales along the BC coast for feeding and breeding activities.

El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo registrar parasitosis gastrointestinales entre humanos y sus perros domésticos, y así correlacionar el riesgo en Salud Pública, en una comunidad urbano-marginal denominada “Las Piñas”, perteneciente al cantón Milagro (Guayas-Ecuador). Se analizaron muestras de heces humanas y de sus perros domésticos a través de pruebas coproparasitarias. De 201 muestras fecales humanas y 257 caninas, se determinaron prevalencias totales de parasitosis intestinal en humanos del 48,25% y en perros domésticos del 74,32%. En humanos se identificaron siete taxones de parásitos: Entamoeba histolytica 30,84%, Entamoeba coli 13,93%, Giardia lamblia 7,96%, Ascaris lumbricoides 3,98%, Trichuris trichiura 3,98%, Ancylostoma duodeale 2,48% y Strongyloides stercoralis 1,49%. Por otro lado, los siguientes nueve especies de parásitos fueron identificados en caninos: Ancylostoma spp. 73,82%, Toxocara canis 36,64%, Strongyloides stercoralis 26,17%, Trichuris vulpis 4,18%, Cystoisospora spp. 1,57 %, Dipilidium caninum 1,04 %, Opisthorchis spp. 1,04 %, Alaria spp. 0,52% y Echinococcus granulosus 0,52%. El parásito que coincidió entre humanos y sus perros domésticos fue Strongyloides stercoralis. La importancia para el humano y el canino es que algunas de las especies encontradas en caninos son zoonoticas (Ancylostoma caninum y A. braziliense, T. canis, D. caninum; E. granulosus, A. alata, T. vulpis) y algunas encontradas en el hombre puede compartirlas con los caninos (S. estercoralis, G. lamblia, alguna especie de Opisthorchis).

IntroductionThe Pediatric Rheumatology Care and Outcomes Improvement Network (PR-COIN) is a North American learning health network focused on improving outcomes of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). JIA is a chronic autoimmune disease that can lead to morbidity related to persistent joint and ocular inflammation. PR-COIN has a shared patient registry that tracks twenty quality measures including ten outcome measures of which six are related to disease activity. The network's global aim, set in 2021, was to increase the percent of patients with oligoarticular or polyarticular JIA that had an inactive or low disease activity state from 76% to 80% by the end of 2023.MethodsTwenty-three hospitals participate in PR-COIN, with over 7,200 active patients with JIA. The disease activity outcome measures include active joint count, physician global assessment of disease activity, and measures related to validated composite disease activity scoring systems including inactive or low disease activity by the 10-joint clinical Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score (cJADAS10), inactive or low disease activity by cJADAS10 at 6 months post-diagnosis, mean cJADAS10 score, and the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) provisional criteria for clinical inactive disease. Data is collated to measure network performance, which is displayed on run and control charts. Network-wide interventions have included pre-visit planning, shared decision making, self-management support, population health management, and utilizing a Treat to Target approach to care.ResultsFive outcome measures related to disease activity have demonstrated significant improvement over time. The percent of patients with inactive or low disease activity by cJADAS10 surpassed our goal with current network performance at 81%. Clinical inactive disease by ACR provisional criteria improved from 46% to 60%. The mean cJADAS10 score decreased from 4.3 to 2.6, and the mean active joint count declined from 1.5 to 0.7. Mean physician global assessment of disease activity significantly improved from 1 to 0.6.ConclusionsPR-COIN has shown significant improvement in disease activity metrics for patients with JIA. The network will continue to work on both site-specific and collaborative efforts to improve outcomes for children with JIA with attention to health equity, severity adjustment, and data quality.

IMPORTANCE:. Physical functional impairment is one of three components of postintensive care syndrome (PICS) that affects up to 60% of ICU survivors. OBJECTIVES:. To explore the prevalence of objective physical functional impairment among a diverse cohort of ICU survivors, both at discharge and longitudinally, and to highlight sociodemographic factors that might be associated with the presence of objective physical functional impairment. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:. This was a secondary analysis of 37 patients admitted to the ICU in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Denver, Colorado between 2016 and 2019 who survived with longitudinal follow-up data. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES:. Our primary outcome of physical functional impairment was defined by handgrip strength and the short physical performance battery. We explored associations between functional impairment and sociodemographic factors that included race/ethnicity, sex, primary language, education status, and medical comorbidities. RESULTS:. More than 75% of ICU survivors were affected by physical functional impairment at discharge and longitudinally at 3- to 6-month follow-up. We did not see a significant difference in the proportion of patients with physical functional impairment by race/ethnicity, primary language, or education status. Impairment was relatively higher in the follow-up period among women, compared with men, and those with comorbidities. Among 18 patients with scores at both time points, White patients demonstrated greater change in handgrip strength than non-White patients. Four non-White patients demonstrated diminished handgrip strength between discharge and follow-up. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE:. In this exploratory analysis, we saw that the prevalence of objective physical functional impairment among ICU survivors was high and persisted after hospital discharge. Our findings suggest a possible relationship between race/ethnicity and physical functional impairment. These exploratory findings may inform future investigations to evaluate the impact of sociodemographic factors on functional recovery.

Slow cortical oscillations play a crucial role in processing the speech amplitude envelope, which is perceived atypically by children with developmental dyslexia. Here we use electroencephalography (EEG) recorded during natural speech listening to identify neural processing patterns involving slow oscillations that may characterize children with dyslexia. In a story listening paradigm, we find that atypical power dynamics and phase-amplitude coupling between delta and theta oscillations characterize dyslexic versus other child control groups (typically-developing controls, other language disorder controls). We further isolate EEG common spatial patterns (CSP) during speech listening across delta and theta oscillations that identify dyslexic children. A linear classifier using four delta-band CSP variables predicted dyslexia status (0.77 AUC). Crucially, these spatial patterns also identified children with dyslexia when applied to EEG measured during a rhythmic syllable processing task. This transfer effect (i.e., the ability to use neural features derived from a story listening task as input features to a classifier based on a rhythmic syllable task) is consistent with a core developmental deficit in neural processing of speech rhythm. The findings are suggestive of distinct atypical neurocognitive speech encoding mechanisms underlying dyslexia, which could be targeted by novel interventions.
