We present an analytic, Mie theory-based solution for the energy-loss and the photon-emission probabilities in the interaction of spherical nanoparticles with electrons passing nearby and through them, in both cathodoluminescence and electron energy-loss spectroscopies. In particular, we focus on the case of penetrating electron trajectories, for which the complete fully electrodynamic and relativistic formalism has not been reported as yet. We exhibit the efficiency of this method in describing collective excitations in matter through calculations for a dispersive and lossy system, namely a sphere described by a Drude permittivity. Subsequently, we use the analytic solution to corroborate the implementation of electron-beam sources in a state-of-the-art numerical method for problems in electrodynamics, the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method. We show that the two approaches produce spectra in good mutual agreement, and demonstrate the versatility of DGTD via simulations of spherical nanoparticles characterized by surface roughness. The possibility of simultaneously employing both kinds of calculations (analytic and numerical) facilitates a better understanding of the rich optical response of nanophotonic architectures excited by fast electron beams., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

We describe a numerical time-domain approach for high-accuracy calculations of Casimir-Polder forces near micro-structured materials. The use of a time-domain formulation enables the investigation of a broad range of materials described by advanced material models, including nonlocal response functions. We validate the method by a number of example calculations for which we thoroughly investigate the convergence properties of the method, and comparing to analytical reference calculations, we find average relative errors as low as a few parts in a million. As an application example, we investigate the anisotropy-induced repulsive behavior of the Casimir-Polder force near a sharp gold wedge described by a hydrodynamic Drude model., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Artificial gauge fields enable the intriguing possibility to manipulate the propagation of light as if it were under the influence of a magnetic field even though photons possess no intrinsic electric charge. Typically, such fields are engineered via periodic modulations of photonic lattices such that the effective coupling coefficients after one period become complex-valued. In this work, we investigate the possibility to introduce randomness into artificial gauge fields by applying local random phase shifts in the modulation of lattices of optical waveguides. We first study the elemental unit consisting of two coupled single-mode waveguides and determine the effective complex-valued coupling coefficient after one period of the modulation as a function of the phase shift, the modulation amplitude and the modulation frequency. Thereby we identify the regime where varying the modulation phase yields sufficiently large changes of the effective coupling coefficient to induce Anderson localization. Using these results, we demonstrate numerically the onset of Anderson localization in 1D- and 2D-lattices of x-, and helically-modulated waveguides via randomly choosing the modulation phases of the individual waveguides. Besides further fundamental investigations of wave propagation in the presence of random gauge fields, our findings enable the engineering of the coupling coefficients without changing the footprint of the overall lattice. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate how to engineer out-of-phase modulated lattices which exhibit dynamic localization and defect-free surface states. Therefore, we anticipate that the modulation phase will play an important role in the judicious design of functional waveguide lattices.

Due to their high degree of parallelism, fast processing speeds and low power consumption, analog optical functional elements offer interesting routes for realizing neuro-morphic computer hardware. For instance, convolutional neural networks lend themselves to analog optical implementations by exploiting the Fourier-transform characteristics of suitable designed optical setups. However, the efficient implementation of optical nonlinearities for such neural networks still represents challenges. In this work, we report on the realization and characterization of a three-layer optical convolutional neural network where the linear part is based on a 4f-imaging system and the optical nonlinearity is realized via the absorption profile of a cesium atomic vapor cell. This system classifies the handwritten digital dataset MNIST with 83.96% accuracy, which agrees well with corresponding simulations. Our results thus demonstrate the viability of utilizing atomic nonlinearities in neural network architectures with low power consumption.

The nonlocal response of plasmonic materials and nanostructures is usually described within a hydrodynamic approach which is based on the Euler-Drude equation. In this work, we reconsider this approach within linear response theory and employ Halevi's extension to this standard hydrodynamic model. After discussing the impact of this improved model, which we term the Halevi model, on the propagation of longitudinal volume modes, we accordingly extend the Mie-Ruppin theory. Specifically, we derive the dispersion relation of cylindrical surface plasmons. This reveals a nonlocal, collisional damping term which is related to earlier phenomenological considerations of limited-mean-free-path effects and influences both, peak width and amplitude of corresponding resonances in the extinction spectrum. In addition, we transfer the Halevi model into the time-domain thereby revealing a novel, diffusive contribution to the current which shares certain similarities with Cattaneo-type currents and analyze the resulting hybrid, diffusive-wave-like motion. Further, we discuss the relation of the Halevi model to other approaches commonly used in the literature. Finally, we demonstrate how to implement the Halevi model into the Discontinuous-Galerkin Time-Domain finite-element Maxwell solver and are able to identify an oscillatory contribution to the diffusive current. The Halevi model thus captures a number of relevant features beyond the standard hydrodynamic model. Contrary to other extensions of the standard hydrodynamic model, its use in time-domain Maxwell solvers is straightforward -- especially due its affinity to a class of descriptions that allow for a clear distinction between bulk and surface response. Efficient modeling of dispersive materials via time-domain simulations of the Maxwell equations relies on the technique of auxiliary differential equations. In this approach, a material's frequency-dependent permittivity is represented via a sum of rational functions, e.g. Lorentz-poles, and the associated free parameters are determined by fitting to experimental data. In the present work, we present a modified approach for plasmonic materials that requires considerably fewer fit parameters than traditional approaches. Specifically, we consider the underlying microscopic theory and, in the frequency domain, separate the hydrodynamic contributions of the quasi-free electrons in partially filled bands from the interband transitions. As an illustration, we apply our approach to gold and demonstrate how to treat the interband transitions within the effective model via connecting to the underlying electronic bandstructure, thereby assigning physical meaning to the remaining fit parameters. Finally, we show how to utilize this approach within the technique of auxiliary differential equations. Our approach can be extended to other plasmonic materials and leads to efficient time-domain simulations of plasmonic structures for frequency ranges where interband transitions have to be considered., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Optical resonators are structures that utilize wave interference and feedback to confine light in all three dimensions. Depending on the feedback mechanism, resonators can support either standing- or traveling-wave modes. Over the years, the distinction between these two different types of modes has become so prevalent that nowadays it is one of the main characteristics for classifying optical resonators. Here, we show that an intermediate link between these two rather different groups exists. In particular, we introduce a new class of photonic resonators that supports a hybrid optical mode, i.e. at one location along the resonator the electromagnetic fields associated with the mode feature a purely standing-wave pattern, while at a different location, the fields of the same mode represent a pure traveling wave. The proposed concept is general and can be implemented using chip-scale photonics as well as free-space optics. Moreover, it can be extended to other wave phenomena such as microwaves and acoustics.

Fluctuations are ubiquitous in nature. They are one of the fundamental building blocks of quantum mechanics and are responsible for a wide variety of phenomena in many areas of physics, ranging from biology to cosmology. We develop a quantum mechanical theory to describe the optical response of semiconductor nanostructures with a particular emphasis on higher-order harmonic Generation. Based on a tight-binding approach we take all two-particle correlations into account thus describing the creation, evolution and annihilation of electron and holes. In the limiting case of bulk materials, we obtain the same precision as that achieved by solving the well-established semiconductor Bloch Equations. For semiconducting structures of finite extent, we also incorporate the surrounding space thus enabling a description of electron emission. In addition, we incorporate different relaxation mechanisms such as dephasing and damping of intraband currents. Moreover, the advantage of our description is that, starting from extremely precise material data as e.g., from tight-binding parameters obtained from density-functional-theory calculations, we obtain a numerical description being by far less computationally challenging and resource-demanding as comparable ab-initio approaches, e.g., those based on time-dependent density functional theory.

When two or more objects move relative to one another in vacuum, they experience a drag force which, at zero temperature, usually goes under the name of quantum friction. This contactless non-conservative interaction is mediated by the fluctuations of the material-modified quantum electrodynamic vacuum and, hence, is purely quantum in nature. Numerous investigations have revealed the richness of the mechanisms at work, thereby stimulating novel theoretical and experimental approaches and identifying challenges as well as opportunities. Exceptional points are complex-valued spectral singularities that lead to a host of intriguing features such as loss-induced transparency - a counterintuitive process in which an increase in the system's overall loss can lead to enhanced transmission. In general, the associated enhancements scale with the order of the exceptional points. Consequently, it is of great interest to devise new strategies to implement realistic devices capable of exhibiting high-order exceptional points. Here, we show that high-order N-photon exceptional points can be generated by exciting non-hermitian waveguide arrangements with coherent light states. Using photon-number resolving detectors it then becomes possible to observe N-photon enhanced loss-induced transparency in the quantum realm. Further, we analytically show that the number-resolved dynamics occurring in the same nonconservative waveguide arrays will exhibit eigenspectral ramifications having several exceptional points associated to different sets of eigenmodes and dissipation rates.

Ensembles of ultra-cold atoms have been proven to be versatile tools for high precision sensing applications. Here, we present a method for manipulation and readout of the state of trapped clouds of ultra-cold bosonic atoms. In particular, we discuss the creation of coherent and squeezed states of quasiparticles and the coupling of quasiparticle modes through an external cavity field. This enables operations like state swapping and beam splitting which can be applied to realize a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) in frequency space. We present two explicit example applications in sensing: the measurement of the healing length of the condensate with the MZI scheme, and the measurement of an oscillating force gradient with a pulsed optomechanical readout scheme. In virtual-state spectroscopy, information about the energy-level structure of an arbitrary sample is retrieved by Fourier transforming sets of measured two-photon absorption probabilities of entangled photon pairs where the degree of entanglement and the delay time between the photons have been varied. This works well for simple systems but quickly becomes rather difficult when many intermediate states are involved. We propose and discuss an extension of entangled two-photon absorption spectroscopy that solves this problem by means of repeated measurements at different pump wavelengths. Topological insulators combine insulating properties in the bulk with scattering-free transport along edges, supporting dissipationless unidirectional energy and information flow even in the presence of defects and disorder. The feasibility of engineering quantum Hamiltonians with photonic tools, combined with the availability of entangled photons, raises the intriguing possibility of employing topologically protected entangled states in optical quantum computing and information processing. However, while two-photon states built as a product of two topologically protected single-photon states inherit full protection from their single-photon "parents", high degree of non-separability may lead to rapid deterioration of the two-photon states after propagation through disorder. We identify physical mechanisms which contribute to the vulnerability of entangled states in topological photonic lattices and present clear guidelines for maximizing entanglement without sacrificing topological protection., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

Quantum theory stipulates that if two particles are identical in all physical aspects, the allowed states of the system are either symmetric or antisymmetric with respect to permutations of the particle labels. Experimentally, the symmetry of the states can be inferred indirectly from the fact that neglecting the correct exchange symmetry in the theoretical analysis leads to dramatic discrepancies with the observations. The only way to directly unveil the symmetry of the states for, say, two identical particles is through the interference of the original state and the physically permuted one, and measure the phase associated with the permutation process, the so-called particle exchange phase. Thermodynamic principles are often deceptively simple and yet surprisingly powerful. We show how a simple rule, such as the net flow of energy in and out of a moving atom under nonequilibrium steady state condition, can expose the shortcomings of many popular theories of quantum friction. Our thermodynamic approach provides a conceptual framework in guiding atom-optical experiments, thereby highlighting the importance of fluctuation-dissipation relations and long-time correlations between subsystems. Activating transitions between internal states of physical systems has emerged as an appealing approach to create lattices and complex networks. In such a scheme, the internal states or modes of a physical system are regarded as lattice sites or network nodes in an abstract space whose dimensionality may exceed the systems' apparent (geometric) dimensionality. This introduces the notion of synthetic dimensions, thus providing entirely novel pathways for fundamental research and applications. Here, we analytically show that the propagation of multi-photon states through multi-port waveguide arrays gives rise to synthetic dimensions where a single waveguide system generates a multitude of synthetic lattices. Since these synthetic lattices exist in photon-number space, we introduce the concept of pseudo-energy and demonstrate its utility for studying multi-photon interference processes. Specifically, the spectrum of the associated pseudo-energy operator generates a unique ordering of the relevant states. Together with generalized pseudo-energy ladder operators, this allows for representing the dynamics of multi-photon states by way of pseudo-energy term diagrams that are associated with a synthetic atom. As a result, the pseudo-energy representation leads to concise analytical expressions for the eigensystem of $N$ photons propagating through $M$ nearest-neighbor coupled waveguides. Topological phenomena in non-Hermitian systems have recently become a subject of great interest in the photonics and condensed-matter communities. In particular, the possibility of observing topologically-protected edge states in non-Hermitian lattices has sparked an intensive search for systems where this kind of states are sustained. Here, we present the first study on the emergence of topological edge states in two-dimensional Haldane lattices exhibiting balanced gain and loss. In line with recent studies on other Chern insulator models, we show that edge states can be observed in the so-called broken $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric phase, that is, when the spectrum of the gain-loss-balanced system's Hamiltonian is not entirely real. More importantly, we find that such topologically protected edge states emerge irrespective of the lattice boundaries, namely zigzag, bearded or armchair.

Dark plasmonic modes have interesting properties, such as a longer lifetime and a narrower linewidth than their radiative counterpart, as well as little to no radiative losses. However, they have not been extensively studied yet due to their optical inaccessibility. Using electron-energy loss (EEL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy, the dark radial breathing modes (RBMs) in thin, monochrystalline gold nanodisks are systematically investigated in this work. It is found that the RBMs can be detected in a CL set-up despite only collecting the far-field. Their visibility in CL is attributed to the breaking of the mirror symmetry by the high-index substrate, creating an effective dipole moment. The outcoupling into the far-field is demonstrated to be enhanced by a factor of 4 by increasing the thickness of the supporting SiN membrane from 5 to 50 nm due to the increased net electric dipole moment in the substrate. Furthermore, it is shown that the resonance energy of RBMs can be easily tuned by varying the diameter of the nanodisk, making them promising candidates for nanophotonic applications.

We present a practical approach for constructing meshes of general rough surfaces with given autocorrelation functions based on the unstructured meshes of nominally smooth surfaces. The approach builds on a well-known method to construct correlated random numbers from white noise using a decomposition of the autocorrelation matrix. We discuss important details arising in practical applications to the physicalmodeling of surface roughness and provide a software implementation to enable use of the approach with a broad range of numerical methods in various fields of science and engineering., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We study the role of surface polaritons in the zero-temperature Casimir effect between two graphene layers that are described by the Dirac model. A parametric approach allows us to accurately calculate the dispersion relations of the relevant modes and to evaluate their contribution to the total Casimir energy. The resulting force features a change of sign from attractive to repulsive as the distance between the layers increases. Contrary to similar calculations that have been performed for metallic plates, our asymptotic analysis demonstrates that at small separations the polaritonic contribution becomes negligible relative to the total energy.

The motion-induced drag force acting on a particle moving parallel to an arrangement of $N$ objects is analyzed. Particular focus is placed on the nonequilibrium statistics of the interaction and on the interplay between the system's geometry and the different dissipative processes occurring in realistic setups. We show that the drag force can exhibit a markedly nonadditive enhancement with respect to the corresponding additive approximation. The specific case of a planar cavity -- a relevant configuration for many experiments -- is calculated, showing an enhancement of about one order of magnitude. We address the problem of the persistence of entanglement of quantum light under mode transformations, where orthogonal modes define the parties between which quantum correlations can occur. Since the representation of a fixed photonic quantum state in different optical mode bases can substantially influence the entanglement properties of said state, we devise a constructive method to obtain families of states with the genuine feature of remaining entangled for any choice of mode decomposition. In the first step, we focus on two-photon states in a bipartite system and optimize their entanglement properties with respect to unitary mode transformations. Applying a necessary and sufficient entanglement witness criteria, we are then able to prove that the class of constructed states is entangled for arbitrary mode decompositions. Furthermore, we provide optimal bounds to the robustness of the mode-independent entanglement under general imperfections. In the second step, we demonstrate the power of our technique by showing how it can be straightforwardly extended to higher-order photon numbers in multipartite systems, together with providing a generally applicable and rigorous definition of mode-independent separability and inseparability for mixed states.

We present a bi-orthogonal approach for modeling the response of localized electromagnetic resonators using quasinormal modes, which represent the natural, dissipative eigenmodes of the system with complex frequencies. For many problems of interest in optics and nanophotonics, the quasinormal modes constitute a powerful modeling tool, and the bi-orthogonal approach provides a coherent, precise, and accessible derivation of the associated theory, enabling an illustrative connection between different modeling approaches that exist in the literature.

Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies of non-Hermitian operators where, in addition to the eigenvalues, corresponding eigenmodes become degenerate. Classical and quantum photonic systems with EPs have attracted tremendous attention due to their unusual properties, topological features, and an enhanced sensitivity that depends on the order of the EP, i.e. the number of degenerate eigenmodes. Yet, experimentally engineering higher-order EPs in classical or quantum domains remains an open challenge due to the stringent symmetry constraints that are required for the coalescence of multiple eigenmodes. Here we analytically show that the number-resolved dynamics of a single, lossy, waveguide beamsplitter, excited by $N$ indistinguishable photons and post-selected to the $N$-photon subspace, will exhibit an EP of order $N+1$. By using the well-established mapping between a beamsplitter Hamiltonian and the perfect state transfer model in the photon-number space, we analytically obtain the time evolution of a general $N$-photon state, and numerically simulate the system's evolution in the post-selected manifold. Quantum walks in dynamically-disordered networks have become an invaluable tool for understanding the physics of open quantum systems. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to describe the dynamics of indistinguishable particles in noisy quantum networks. By making use of stochastic calculus, we derive a master equation for the propagation of two non-interacting correlated particles in tight-binding networks affected by off-diagonal dynamical disorder. We show that the presence of noise in the couplings of a quantum network creates a pure-dephasing-like process that destroys all coherences in the single-particle Hilbert subspace. Remarkably, we find that when two or more correlated particles propagate in the network, coherences accounting for particle indistinguishability are robust against the impact of noise, thus showing that it is possible, in principle, to find specific conditions for which many indistinguishable particles can traverse dynamically-disordered systems without losing their ability to interfere. These results shed light on the role of particle indistinguishability in the preservation of quantum coherence in dynamically-disordered quantum networks., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation predicts characteristic statistical fluctuations for light sources as diverse as sunlight, laser radiation and molecule fluorescence. Indeed, these underlying statistical fluctuations of light are associated with the fundamental physical processes behind their generation. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the manipulation of the quantum electromagnetic fluctuations of a pair of vacuum states leads to a novel family of quantum-correlated multiphoton states with tunable mean photon numbers and degree of correlation. Our technique relies on the use of conditional measurements to engineer the excitation mode of the field through the simultaneous subtraction of photons from two-mode squeezed vacuum states. The experimental generation of multiphoton states with quantum correlations by means of photon subtraction unveils novel mechanisms to control fundamental properties of light. As a remarkable example, we demonstrate the engineering of a quantum correlated state of light, with nearly Poissonian photon statistics, that constitutes the first step towards the generation of entangled lasers. Our technique enables a robust protocol to prepare quantum states with multiple photons in high-dimensional spaces and, as such, it constitutes a novel platform for exploring quantum phenomena in mesoscopic systems.

The dissipative properties of spatially nonlocal conductors are investigated in the context of quantum friction acting on an atom moving above a macroscopic body. The focus is on an extended version of the hydrodynamic model for the bulk material's electromagnetic response. It is shown that the standard hydrodynamic description is inadequate for evaluating the frictional force since it completely neglects Landau damping. The extended version of the model contains a frequency-dependent compressibility factor for the Fermi liquid and qualitatively resolves this issue. For a quantitative assessment, these results are contrasted with those obtained for the more fundamental Boltzmann-Mermin model. Since the latter is technically involved, the simplicity of the extended hydrodynamic model allows for an easier analysis of the impact of nonlocality on quantum friction for other (planar) geometries. Quantum coherence, the physical property underlying fundamental phenomena such as multi-particle interference and entanglement, has emerged as a valuable resource upon which modern technologies are founded. In general, the most prominent adversary of quantum coherence is noise arising from the interaction of the associated dynamical system with its environment. Under certain conditions, however, the existence of noise may drive quantum and classical systems to endure intriguing nontrivial effects. In this vein, here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that when two indistinguishable non-interacting particles co-propagate through quantum networks affected by non-dissipative noise, the system always evolves into a steady state in which coherences accounting for particle indistinguishabilty perpetually prevail. We introduce a second quantization scheme based on quasinormal modes, which are the dissipative modes of leaky optical cavities and plasmonic resonators with complex eigenfrequencies. The theory enables the construction of multi-plasmon/photon Fock states for arbitrary three-dimensional dissipative resonators and gives a solid understanding to the limits of phenomenological dissipative Jaynes-Cummings models. In the general case, we show how different quasinormal modes interfere through an off-diagonal mode coupling and demonstrate how these results affect cavity-modified spontaneous emission. We demonstrate that when a waveguide beam splitter (BS) is excited by N indistinguishable photons, the arising multiphoton states evolve in a way as if they were coupled to each other with coupling strengths that are identical to the ones exhibited by a discrete fractional Fourier system. Based on the properties of the discrete fractional Fourier transform, we then derive a multiphoton suppression law for 50/50 BSs, thereby generalizing the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect. Furthermore, we examine the possibility of performing simultaneous multiphoton quantum random walks by using a single waveguide BS in combination with photon number resolving detectors. The quantum thermodynamical properties of (quasi-normal) overdamped electromagnetic modes (eddy currents) are investigated in the context of the magnetic Casimir-Polder interaction. The role of the material response in terms of spatially local and nonlocal material models is discussed. In particular, the focus is set on the system's entropy in the limit of low temperatures. In specific circumstances the spatially local (Drude) model reveals an "entropy defect", while spatial dispersion leads to a more regular behavior. We present a detailed description of this phenomenon and of the different mechanisms at work in the system with regard to the eddy modes' properties. The impact of lossy multi-layer structures on nonequilibrium atom-surface interactions is discussed. Specifically, the focus lies on a fully non-Markovian and nonequilibrium description of quantum friction, the fluctuation-induced drag force acting on an atom moving at constant velocity and height above the multi-layer structures. Compared to unstructured bulk material, the drag force for multi-layer systems is considerably enhanced and exhibits different regimes in its velocity and distance dependences. These features are linked to the appearance of coupled interface polaritons within the superlattice structures. Our results are not only useful for an experimental investigation of quantum friction but also highlight a way to tailor the interaction by simply modifying the structural composition of the multi-layer systems., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Compact spectrometers based on disordered planar waveguides exhibit a rather high resolution with a relatively small footprint as compared to conventional spectrometers. This is achieved by multiple scattering of light which - if properly engineered - significantly enhances the effective optical path length. Here a design study of random spectrometers for TE- and TM-polarized light is presented that combines the results of Mie theory, multiple-scattering theory and full electromagnetic simulations. It is shown that the performance of such random spectrometers depends on single scattering quantities, notably on the overall scattering efficiency and the asymmetry parameter. Further, the study shows that a well-developed diffusive regime is not required in practice and that a standard integrated-optical layout is sufficient to obtain efficient devices even for rather weakly scattering systems consisting of low index inclusions in high-index matrices such as pores in planar silicon-nitride based waveguides. This allows for both significant reductions in footprint with acceptable losses in resolution and for device operation in the visible and near-infrared frequency range.

We study bandstructure properties of periodic optical systems composed of lossy and intrinsically dispersive materials. To this end, we develop an analytical framework based on adjoint modes of a lossy periodic electromagnetic system and show how the problem of linearly dependent eigenmodes in the presence of material dispersion can be overcome. We then formulate expressions for the bandstructure derivative $(\partial \omega) / (\partial \mathbf{k})$ (complex group velocity) and the local and total density of transverse optical states. Our exact expressions hold for 3D periodic arrays of materials with arbitrary dispersion properties and in general need to be evaluated numerically. They can be generalized to systems with two, one or no directions of periodicity provided the fields are localized along non-periodic directions. Possible applications are photonic crystals, metamaterials, metasurfaces composed of highly dispersive materials such as metals or lossless photonic crystals, metamaterials or metasurfaces strongly coupled to resonant perturbations such as quantum dots or excitons in 2D materials. For illustration purposes, we analytically evaluate our expressions for some simple systems consisting of lossless dielectrics with one sharp Lorentzian material resonance. Finally, we show how the perturbation of a periodic system with a sharp resonance modifies the bandstructure. By combining several Lorentz poles, this provides an avenue to perturbatively treat quite general material loss bands in photonic crystals., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the fluorescence properties of colloidal quantum dots attached to gold rod nanoantennas. These structures are fabricated by a two step electron beam lithography process in combination with a chemical linking method. By varying the nanoantenna length, the plasmon modes of the nanoantennas are successively tuned through the emission band of the quantum dots. We observe a pronounced fluorescence enhancement both for short and long nanoantennas. These findings can be attributed to the coupling of the quantum dots to bright and dark plasmon modes, respectively.

Quantum coherence, the physical property underlying fundamental phenomena such as multi-particle interference and entanglement, has emerged as a valuable resource upon which exotic modern technologies are founded. In general, the most prominent adversary of quantum coherence is noise arising from the interaction of the associated dynamical system with its environment. Under certain conditions, however, the existence of noise may drive quantum and classical systems to endure intriguing nontrivial effects. Along these lines, here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that when two indistinguishable particles co-propagate through quantum networks affected by noise, the system always evolves into a steady state in which coherences between certain separable states perpetually prevail. Furthermore, we show that the same steady state with surviving quantum coherences is reached irrespectively of the configuration in which the particles are prepared.

We study different notions of quantum correlations in multipartite systems of distinguishable and indistinguishable particles. Based on the definition of quantum coherence for a single particle, we consider two possible extensions of this concept to the many-particle scenario and determine the influence of the exchange symmetry. Moreover, we characterize the relation of multiparticle coherence to the entanglement of the compound quantum system. To support our general treatment with examples, we consider the quantum correlations of a collection of qudits. The impact of local and global quantum superpositions on the different forms of quantum correlations is discussed. For differently correlated states in the bipartite and multipartite scenarios, we provide a comprehensive characterization of the various forms and origins of quantum correlations.

We use the concept of two-particle probability amplitude to derive the stochastic evolution equation for two-particle four-point correlations in tight-binding networks affected by diagonal dynamic disorder. It is predicted that in the presence of dynamic disorder, the average spatial wave function of indistinguishable particle pairs delocalizes and populates all network sites including those which are weakly coupled in the absence of disorder. Interestingly, our findings reveal that correlation elements accounting for particle indistinguishability are immune to the impact of dynamic disorder.

In this manuscript we report on a near-feld study of two-dimensional plasmonic gold nano-wedges using electron energy loss spectroscopy in combination with scanning transmission electron microscopy, as well as discontinuous Galerkin time-domain computations. With increasing nano-wedge size, we observe a transition from localized surface plasmons on small nano-wedges to non-resonant propagating surface plasmon polaritons on large nano-wedges. Furthermore we demonstrate that nano-wedges with a groove cut can support localized as well as propagating plasmons in the same energy range.

We present numerical and analytical results for the lifetime of emitters in close proximity to graphene sheets. Specifically, we analyze the contributions from different physical channels that participate in the decay processes. Our results demonstrate that measuring the emitters' decay rates provides an efficient route for sensing graphene's optoelectronic properties, notably the existence and size of a potential band gap in its electronic band structure.

We investigate the dispersion relations of TE resonances in different graphene-dielectric structures. Previous work has shown that when a graphene layer is brought into contact with a dielectric material, a gap can appear in its electric band structure. This allows for the formation of TE-plasmons with unusual dispersion relations. In addition, if the dielectric has a finite thickness, graphene strongly modifies the behavior of the waveguiding modes by introducing dissipation above a well-defined cutoff frequency thus providing the possibility of mode filtering. This cutoff and the properties of TE-plasmons are closely related to the pair-creation threshold of graphene thus representing quantum mechanical effects that manifest themselves in the electromagnetic response.
