The timing and mechanism of the crustal extension that caused blocks of continental crust to rift and drift northwards from the northern Gondwana margin during the Early Palaeozoic are currently debated. Here, we present new field, geochemical and U-Pb zircon data from peri-Gondwanan Central Sakarya terrane in NW Turkey to shed light on the timing and petrogenesis of extensional magmatism and subsequent passive margin development of the northern Gondwana margin. Our 1/25.000 scale mapping of a selected area (250 km2) has revealed a south-vergent thrust stack comprising three slices. The Middle Slice of the thrust stack consists of a gneiss-amphibolite complex that has a basement-cover type stratigraphy (before regional metamorphism). The basement unit consists of meta-granitoids, intruded by meta-syenite and banded amphibolites, with geochemical characteristics reflecting I&S-type, A-type and within plate alkaline/transitional-type magmatism, respectively. The cover meta-clastic sediments have amphibolite lenses with MORB and back-arc basin-type geochemistry. Meta-granitoid bodies yielded zircon U-Pb ages of 507 ± 16 Ma, 503 ± 12 Ma, and 488 ± 2.6 Ma (Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician), whereas the meta-syenites gave ages of 473.9 ± 5.7 Ma and 471.4 ± 2.5 Ma (late Early Ordovician); also, age of the banded amphibolite was dated as 473.3 ± 4 Ma. The youngest detrital zircon population in the pebbly quartzite sample within cover meta-sediments (458 ± 3 Ma) constrains the maximum depositional age to around early Late Ordovician. The late Early Ordovician bimodal magmatism, a key focus of our study, is interpreted to have formed in response to the Rheic Ocean rifting along the northern margin of Gondwana. The Late Cambrian granitic magmatism, a precursor to bimodal magmatism, can be explained by lithospheric thinning and upwelling of the asthenosphere to form anatectic silicic melts. The unconformity between the basement and cover units may represent the initiation of a new phase of extension at the N Gondwana margin that culminated in the northward drifting of the Central Sakarya and the opening of Palaeotethys, associated with back-arc basic magmatism in Late Ordovician-Silurian. Lower Miocene plutons exposed in the Western Cordillera of Colombia record the reinitiation of continental arc magmatism in the Northern Andes after a period of magmatic quiescence between the Late Eocene and Early Miocene. Petrography, U-Pb zircon geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, mineral chemistry, and zircon Hf isotope data from these plutons are used to reconstruct the Miocene magmatic evolution in the Colombian Andes and understand its relation with the major plate-tectonic reorganization experienced by the NW South American continental margin during the Lower Miocene. We examined a suite of gabbros, granodiorites and tonalites from Danubio, Pance and Tatamá plutons, formed between 21 Ma and 15 Ma. Gabbros present highly positive εHf values (+13.5 and + 11.5) with low Th/La and La/Yb ratios, and granodiorites and tonalites present lower εHf values (+14.3 to + 6.4). The results of this contribution show a major asthenospheric source with absent or minor melting of subducted sediments, and contribution of oxidized aqueous fluids. The compositional diversification of these magmas was controlled by fractional crystallization and, in the Tatamá pluton, also by local assimilation of continental crust at lower crustal levels of the upper plate. Subsequently, these magmas were emplaced in the Cretaceous to Palaeogene volcanic and sedimentary rocks in the uppermost crust. The renewed magmatic activity recorded by the studied plutons suggests a normal to step subduction of the elder Farallon Plate during the Neogene subduction re-organization in the Colombian Andes, as well as the local presence of continental crust fragments in the lower crust of the Western Cordillera of Colombia. The subduction and rollback of the paleo-Pacific plate during Mesozoic time was the key engine for the evolution of the continental margin in eastern China. It led to lateral accretion of continental crust in Northeast China, lithospheric destruction beneath the North China Craton, and the generation of huge volumes of felsic magmatic rocks in South China. This had a profound influence on deep material cycles and the evolution of epigenetic environmental systems along the continental margin of East Asia. To fully understand the transformation of the dynamic mechanism during the subduction and rollback of the paleo-Pacific plate, we have attempted to trace the remnants and fragments of the subducted paleo-Pacific plate at great depths. Such remnants in both temporal and spatial dimensions can be tracked by using geochemical and geophysical approaches. Studies of the trace elements, Mg-Zn isotopes and Os-Nd-Hf-Pb-O isotopes in continental basalts from eastern China reveal a significant number of the remnants of subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate, and the initial subduction can be traced back to the Early Jurassic. Large-scale geophysical imaging unveils a multitude of high-velocity anomalies in the lower mantle of East Asia. Notably, many high-velocity bodies, aptly referred to as "slab graveyards", are nestled at the base of the lower mantle. Numerous isolated high-velocity anomalies are also present in the upper part of the lower mantle, creating conduits for the descent of the subducted slabs into the lower mantle. However, a resolution of the remnants for the subducted slabs within the lower mantle are quite low. Consequently, their impact on the lower mantle's dynamics is yet to be thoroughly investigated. Finally, the presently observed big mantle wedge (BMW) in East Asia has developed through subduction of the Pacific plate in the Cenozoic. However, following the rollback of the paleo-Pacific plate (began at ∼145 Ma), a Cretaceous BMW system would also form above the mantle transition zone in East Asia. There are significant differences in tectonic-magmatic processes and basin-forming and hydrocarbon-accumulation processes among different regions along the East Asian continental margin. The results of geochemical and Nd isotopic studies of rocks and U–Th–Pb (LA-ICP-MS) geochronological and Hf isotopic studies of detrital zircon from metaterrigenous rocks of the Kodar Group of the Udokan Complex (Aldan Shield) are presented. It is established that the age of rocks of the Kodar Group is 1.99–1.91 Ga, whereas the age of rocks of the Chinei and Kemen groups of the Udokan Complex is 1.90–1.87 Ga (Kovach et al., 2018, 2023a). This allows us to raise the issue of recognition of the Kodar Group as an independent stratigraphic subdivision. The terrigenous rocks of the group were sourced from the Archean igneous and metamorphic rock of the Chara–Olekma Geoblock and probably the Kalar and Kurulta blocks of the Stanovoi suture zone, as well as the Paleoproterozoic (2.04–1.99, 2.08, 2.20, and 2.30 Ga) complexes of active continental margins or ensialic island arcs in the western–northwestern and southern (in the present-day coordinates) frame of the Chara–Olekma Geoblock, which are unidentified in the region at the current erosion level. Erosion of rocks of magmatic arcs and the continental slope led to the deposition of rocks of the Kodar Group in a retroarc foreland basin, whereas further collapse of the orogen and the formation of an intracontinental extension basin were responsible for the deposition of terrigenous rocks of the Chinei and Kemen groups. Earthquake occurrence depth in the crust is related to stress, temperature, and brittle-ductile transition, which is also near the transition depth of the upper to lower crust. The composition variation between the upper and lower crust causes remarkable changes of rheological properties and variation in stress distribution. Clarifying the detailed stress distribution in the upper and lower crust is crucial for understanding the brittle-ductile transition and the stress environment of the seismogenic zone. The Southeastern Tibetan Plateau (SETP), with wide spread of active strike--slip faults and clustered earthquakes, provides a natural field for investigating the relationships between crustal stresses, deformation behaviors, and earthquake mechanics. By considering the rheological properties of granite and anorthite, this paper established stress models with different boundary depths (15, 20 and 25 km) between the upper and lower crust along the Anninghe, Xianshuihe, and Longmenshan Faults in the SETP with a horizontal strain of 6 x 10-4 extracted from in situ stress data. The stress model with different geothermal gradients and a boundary depth of 20 km between the upper and lower crust suggests two distinct types of the brittle-ductile transition below these three faults. Simultaneously, the stress model can account for the continuity of earthquake depth distribution below the Longmenshan Fault and the seismic gap below the Anninghe and Xianshuihe Faults. The continuity of earthquake depth distribution or seismic gap below these three faults can be explained by their different geothermal gradients. These findings provide new insights for understanding the stress environment of the seismogenic zone in the SETP. Our model reveals the relationships between differential stress, seismicity, brittle-ductile transition, and boundary depth of the upper and lower crust in the continental crust, and connects the multiple observations from geophysics and geology. Background: Gallstone disease poses a global threat to human health and is strongly linked to environmental factors. However, there is currently no data on the presence of rare earth elements (REEs) in human gallstones. This paper investigates the concentration and distribution of REEs in gallstones for the first time, aiming to explore the environmental implications on human health. Methods: A total of 25 gallstone samples were collected in Shanghai and the content of REEs was measured by Inductively coupled plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to explore the distribution of REEs in gallstones. Results: The concentration of REEs in gallstones ranged from 4.89 to 190.8 ng/g (mean 39.21). In most of the gallstone analyses, REEs have been detected and generally attributed to environmental exposure or food contamination. The Y/Ho ratio of gallstones was lower than that of continental rocks, similar to that in the blood, indicating limited fractionation during fluid transport processes in the gallbladder. Conclusions: The upper continental crust (UCC)-normalized REEs pattern in gallstones showed depletion of light REEs, while most showed enrichment of heavy REEs. Positive Gd anomalies were found in most samples, while few samples suggested anthropogenic influence. Determining the mechanisms by which the earliest continental crust was generated and reworked is important for constraining the evolution of Earth's geodynamic, surface, and atmospheric conditions. However, the details of early plate tectonic settings often remain obscured by the intervening ~4 Ga of crustal recycling. Covariations of U, Nb, Sc, and Yb in zircon have been shown to faithfully reflect Phanerozoic whole-rock-based plate-tectonic discriminators and are therefore useful in distinguishing zircons crystallized in ridge, plume, and arc-like environments, both in the present and in deep time. However, application of these proxies to deciphering tectonic settings on the early Earth has thus far been limited to select portions of the detrital zircon record. Here, we present in situ trace-element and oxygen isotope compositions for magmatic zircons from crystalline crustal rocks of the Acasta Gneiss Complex and the Saglek-Hebron Complex, Canada. Integrated with information from whole-rock geochemistry and zircon U-Pb, Hf, and O isotopes, our zircon U-Nb-Sc-Yb results reveal that melting of hydrated basalt was not restricted to a single tectonomagmatic process during the Archean but was operative during the reworking of Hadean protocrust and the generation of juvenile crust within two cratons, as early as 3.9 Ga. We observe zircon trace-element compositions indicative of hydrous melting in settings that otherwise host seemingly differing whole-rock geochemistry, zircon Hf, and zircon O isotopes, suggesting contemporaneous operation of stagnant-lid (oceanic plateau) and mobile-lid (arc-like) regimes in the early Archean. Stable Sn isotope ratios are emerging as a novel tracer for a wide range of geological processes; however, the Sn isotopic baseline of the upper continental crust (UCC) is not yet well-constrained. Here, we report high-precision Sn isotope data of a wide range of UCC samples, including granites, pegmatites, and sediments, to document the Sn isotopic composition of UCC. Significant variations in δ122/118Sn 3161a (per mil deviation in 122Sn/118Sn relative to NIST 3161a) values are revealed for I-type (δ122/118Sn 3161a = 0.025 ± 0.026‰ to 0.495 ± 0.046‰, n = 20) and S-type (δ122/118Sn 3161a = 0.156 ± 0.018‰ to 0.501 ± 0.075‰, n = 22) granites. More extreme Sn isotope variability is observed for pegmatites, which have δ122/118Sn 3161a from 0.256 ± 0.047‰ to 0.930 ± 0.049‰ (n = 13). The δ122/118Sn 3161a of I-type granites decrease with decreasing TFe 2 O 3 (total Fe as Fe 2 O 3) and MgO contents and are attributed to the segregation of Fe-bearing minerals. Conversely, the Sn isotope variation of S-type granites appears to reflect source heterogeneity, whereas the Sn isotope variability of pegmatites may reflect fluid activity. In contrast, the loess samples display homogeneous δ122/118Sn 3161a values (0.132 ± 0.034‰ to 0.239 ± 0.020‰, n = 20) that show no correlation with the degree of chemical weathering, suggesting that loess is representative of the average Sn isotope composition of UCC. The δ122/118Sn 3161a values of modern sediments and sedimentary rocks range from 0.080‰ to 0.490‰ (n = 25) and the Sn isotope variations may be related to chemical weathering or sediment provenance. Based on the lithology-weighted average δ122/118Sn 3161a of UCC samples (41 granites and 45 sediments) in this study, the δ122/118Sn 3161a value of UCC is estimated to be 0.233 ± 0.099‰, providing a reference point for further investigations. Amphibole is an important mineral during the differentiation of arc magmas but rarely as a phenocryst in arc lavas or eruptive pyroclastic rocks. The Sanggeda complex, intruded into the ophiolite of the Indus–Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone (IYZSZ), Zedong, southern Tibet, mainly consists of amphibole-rich, fine-grained, and porphyritic gabbros. The complex provides an opportunity to study the differentiation of arc magmas through amphibole crystals. Four distinct amphibole crystal populations can be recognized according to petrographic observations, EMPA, and LA–ICP–MS analysis. The first ones (Type 1) are fined-grained and euhedral, are crystallized during ascent, and are the product of the shallow emplacement of host magma. The second ones (Type 2) are euhedral, with slight negative Eu and Sr anomalies, and crystallize from an evolved magma that previously experienced plagioclase fractionation. Type 3 amphiboles have similar morphological characteristics to Type 2 but are without Eu and Sr anomalies. Type 4 crystals are shown as pseudomorphs, formed by the reaction–replacement between the clinopyroxene and melt. Type 1 crystals are autocrysts. Other amphiboles within host magma, whether presented as phenocrysts or cumulate nodules, are antecrysts. Based on the amphibole crystal population developed in the complex, in this study, a trans-crustal magma plumbing system is proposed, containing at least three magma reservoirs located at different crust depths: the shallow emplaced crust (~4.8 km), the mid-crust (~12.9 km), and the lower crust (~21.8–24.9 km). Early amphibole crystallization is an effective process to generate silicic residual melts. Gravity could help in that sense. The outcrop and microscale structural constraints on metamorphosed fragments of Carpathian-Balkan exotic north Gondwanan continental crust show sequential recurrent peripheral subduction processes which produced a series of collisional orogens: (i) Variscan suturing of ‘Median Dacides’ (western Danubian/Moesian realm), and (ii) post-dating polystage Alpine overprinting. The ‘Median Dacides’ comprise the two gneiss-bearing amphibolite-facies, Serbo-Macedonian and Getic/Kučaj basements, embedded into Southern Carpathians (Romania) and Carpathian-Balkans (Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria). To unravel polyphase deformation processes, we have incorporated the data available on Neoproterozoic-Lower Palaeozoic protoliths and tectonometamorphic events, coupling these with new extensive structural field-based analysis. The deformation patterns expose polystage deformation history (D1-2), fashioned by the youngest Alpine overprinting (D3-4). The structural data and protolith analyses suggest a Lower Palaeozoic Cadomian-to-Cenerian geodynamic linkage between the two gneissic basements. Notably, the pre-Variscan anatexis, migmatitization, metamorphism (D1-1), and the formation of Cenerian (axial planar) foliation (D1-2) are precursors of the tight isocline Variscan folds (D2-1). Progressive deformation of the initial Variscan structural fabric (metre-scale folds) produced complete transposition (D2-2) with scarcely preserved metre-scale folds. The successor Alpine shortening (D3) (re)activated the existing remnants of Variscan axial plane cleavages (or overlapped foliation-to-cleavage planes), further producing schistosity and folding pattern preserved due to the partial transposition. Determining subduction‐related processes is crucial for understanding lithological heterogeneity, as substantial quantities of slabs are recycled into the mantle. Molybdenum isotopes are valuable for distinguishing sources materials due to the significant isotope differences between the crust and the mantle. In this study, we systematically investigate Mo isotopes in a suite of well‐characterized continental basalts from Keluo and Halaha‐Chaoer, located in Northeast China. The δ98Mo values of Keluo range from −0.41 to −0.23‰, with an average of −0.34‰, while Halaha‐Chaoer samples ranged from −0.18 to −0.12‰, with an average of −0.15‰. The δ98Mo values of Keluo basalts are lighter than the mean value of fresh oceanic basalts (−0.21‰), whereas those of Halaha‐Chaoer basalts are similar to oceanic basalts. Combined with other geochemical indications (LOI, Ce/Pb, La/Yb and so on), the Mo isotopic variations cannot be attributed to chemical weathering, continental crust contamination or magmatic processes. Instead, the δ98Mo variations in this study are explained by the incorporation of different oceanic crustal materials into the magma sources. Correlations of δ98Mo with Ba/Th, Th/U, 143Nd/144Nd indicated that both sediment and altered oceanic crust have significantly influenced these variations. Temporal changes in Earth’s tectonic style play a crucial role in understanding the planet’s evolution. Modern-style tectonics is characterized by the formation of basaltic crust at divergent plate boundaries and its subsequent recycling at subduction zones, accompanied by wedge mantle formation and arc magmatism. It is commonly believed that the secular cooling of the mantle modified the tectonic style from stagnant lid or heat pipe on an early hotter Earth to horizontal tectonics during Meso-Neoarchean. However, various field, petrographic, and geochemical studies suggest that the onset of plate tectonics ranges from Hadean to Neoproterozoic. In this study, we re-evaluate the primary magma temperature (mantle potential temperature, Tp) of the upper ambient mantle, spanning from Eoarchean to Neoproterozoic. We used basalts from several Archean and Proterozoic greenstone belts worldwide, along with Proterozoic ophiolites, to (re)calculate the Tp using the FRACTIONATE-PT method. We observed a Tp range of 1444–1639°C during the Archean and 1414–1611°C during the Proterozoic. These findings indicate a strong correlation with previously estimated Tp values obtained from PRIMELT3 method. This further highlights strong internal consistency among different methods and supports models of a hot ambient mantle during the Archean and Proterozoic. We further reviewed numerical models regarding the effect of mantle temperature on the viability of early Earth plate tectonics. Such model results, composition of Archean continental crust, recent crustal growth models, and field evidence are consistent with the operation of plate tectonics on an early hotter Earth. The transition from a hotter mantle to a colder one from Eo-Neoarchean resulted in thinner oceanic lithosphere and a less depleted lithospheric mantle. Subduction of this thinner oceanic lithosphere led to modern-style tectonics. The processes leading to the building of the continental crust through magmatic underplating are fundamentally unknown, mainly because of the rare accessibility to deep level sections of the continental crust. The Italian Alps expose the Permian Mafic Complex, an 8-km-thick gabbronorite–diorite batholith that intruded the lower continental crust during the post-Variscan transtensional tectonics. We present here a petrological and geochemical study of a concentric dunite–pyroxenite–gabbronorite association, called Monte Mazzucco sequence, enclosed at deep levels of the Mafic Complex, thereby allowing us to provide new insights into the magmatic processes driven by emplacement of mantle melts in deep crustal continental areas. The studied sequence includes a ~ 60-m-thick dunite lens, in which olivine (82 mol % forsterite) is associated with accessory Cr-spinel including blebs and lamellae made up of magnetite. The dunite lens is permeated by mm- to cm-scale thick magmatic veins, which range in composition from hornblende lherzolite to olivine hornblendite and hornblende websterite. The lens is mantled by a m-scale ring consisting of amphibole-bearing (≤1 vol %) websterite, and the websterite ring is in turn enclosed by amphibole-free gabbronorites. Both magmatic veins within the dunites and mantling websterites typically include an oxide association of Al-spinel and magnetite. Remarkably, the hornblende websterite veins and the mantling websterites are typically plagioclase-free and include clinopyroxene and amphibole with chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns characterized by negative Eu anomaly. The mantling websterites display a subtle, gradual outward decrease of Mg# for orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and accessory olivine, coupled with an increase of the negative Eu anomaly in clinopyroxene and amphibole. The enclosing gabbronorites are amphibole-free and have a chemically evolved signature. We propose a petrogenetic scenario including two major events of melt–dunite interaction. The first resulted from focused reactive melt infiltration and formed the magmatic veins within dunites. The hornblende lherzolite and the olivine hornblendite veins were produced by focused reactive melt migration through dunite grain boundaries, involving dissolution of olivine and recrystallization of Cr-spinel into Al-spinel and magnetite, whereas the hornblende websterite veins crystallized from melts penetrating through narrow fractures and recording earlier plagioclase fractionation. Most likely, the infiltrating melts were overall derived from an evolving H2O-rich magma emplaced below the dunite body. The second event of melt–dunite reactive interaction developed the websterite ring around dunites. We envision that the outermost domain of the dunite body was replaced by websterites in response to reaction with an invading H2O-poor melt, which had previously undergone plagioclase fractionation. The dunite replacement occurred under dynamic conditions, which promoted the reaction progress, thereby leading to total or almost total dissolution of precursor olivine, and started to form the lens shape of the Monte Mazzucco ultramafic association. The Libyan territory is made of a heterogeneous geologic bodies including intrusive igneous, metamorphic, volcanic rocks, and marine and continental sedimentary formations, Archean to Quaternary in age. It makes part of the "Saharan Metacraton" built up by the pre-Neoproterozoic continental crust between the Hoggar to the west, the Congo Craton to the South, and the Arabian–Nubian Shield to the East. This territory includes heterogeneous mineralogies and lithologies engendered by various geological processes that established appropriate conditions for geo-resources occurrence. Libya has indeed an interesting hydrocarbon potential and the potential to enhance the production and the development of many others geological resources. Unfortunately, trusted official data describing the true state of the geo-resources sector in Libya including production, demand, and market balance are missing for the post 2010 period due to the no effective governance resulting from the political-military instability. Accordingly, this short report is mainly based on the analysis of relevant multisource data and information from published research and available documentation. It constitutes a general diagnosis and a synthesis of the state of the art of the geo-resources of Libya from a combined geological and economic point of view and exposes the opportunities and the challenges their future development faces. Although subduction is a continuous process, arc system behavior is non-steady-state, leading to uncertainty surrounding the composite spatial and temporal evolution of transcrustal arc magma plumbing systems. This study integrates field, geochronologic, and geochemical data sets from the central Sierra Nevada arc section to investigate the extent to which spatial inheritance is recorded in arc geochemical compositions, and how these signals may be modified by dynamic arc behaviors through time, from arc-wide flare-ups, migration, and crustal thickening to regional magma focusing. Geochemical patterns across Mesozoic arc rocks characterize persistent spatial signals of inheritance, whereas geochemical trends during Cretaceous arc activity provide the temporal component of simultaneous dynamic processes. Distinct bulk-rock isotopic signals define each of the three Mesozoic magmatic flare-ups, which, during Cretaceous arc magmatism, is coupled with eastward arc migration. Additionally, Cretaceous magmatic and tectonic thickening doubled the thickness of arc crust, and magmatism was focused toward a central zone, culminating in the formation of the ∼1100 km² Tuolumne Intrusive Complex. During magma focusing, temporal signals of magma mixing outweighed the previously pervasive signal of spatial inheritance. Distinct dynamic behaviors effectively primed the arc by the Late Cretaceous, generating transcrustal hot zones of increased magma mixing, recycling, long-term storage, and homogenization. Non-steady-state behavior in the Sierra Nevada resulted in mountain building and voluminous continental crust formation by transforming the physical, thermal, and chemical properties of the lithosphere over tens of millions of years. Magmatic arcs are the main environment where continental crust is created on the post-Archean Earth; however, how juvenile arc crust evolves into mature continental crust is still controversial. In this study, we report new bulk-rock major and trace elements, SrNd isotopes, and zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopes from a large suite of granites collected from the eastern segment of the Gangdese arc, southern Tibetan Plateau, which record a complete history of arc crust evolution from Mesozoic subduction to Cenozoic collision. These new data show that Gangdese crustderived granites generated during the subduction to collisional stages record significant geochemical changes with age, indicating that the bulk composition, lithological makeup, and thicknesses of the arc crust evolved over time. Here, we propose that the Gangdese arc had a thick juvenile crust with a small volume of ancient crustal components during late-stage subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean, a thin juvenile crust with heterogeneously distributed ancient crustal materials during early collision, and a thick juvenile crust with minor proportions of ancient rocks during late collision. This implies that the arc experienced episodes of crustal thickening during the Late Cretaceous and Eocene, interspersed by periods of thinning during the Paleocene and Miocene, and several discrete episodes of partial melting in the lower arc crust, and cycling or recycling of juvenile and ancient crustal materials within the arc crust and between the crust and mantle. We suggest that shallow subduction of the Neo-Tethys during the Late Cretaceous promoted tectonic thickening of the arc crust, partial melting of lower crust, and formation of high Sr/Y granites. After the onset of the Indo-Asian collision, breakoff of the subducted Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab during the Paleocene/early Eocene allowed thinning of the overlying arc crust and generation of granites derived from juvenile and ancient crustal sources. Continued underthrusting of the Indian continental crust and subsequent delamination of thickened lithospheric mantle led to thickening and thinning of the arc crust, respectively, and partial melting of thickened lower crust and generation of high Sr/Y granites during the Oligocene and Miocene. Using the Gangdese as an analogue for post-Archean continental margins, we suggest that the repeated thickening and thinning of arc crust, and associated multistage remelting of the lower arc crust, and material cycling or recycling within the crust and between the crust and mantle from subduction to collision are common processes that drive maturation of juvenile arc crust. India-Asia continental collision–induced volcanic gas emissions are thought to have played an important role in driving Cenozoic atmospheric CO2 variations, yet the details of how the deep carbon cycle may influence volcanic CO2 degassing are not understood. We present a novel study employing Mg-Zn-Mo isotopic compositions of Cenozoic ultrapotassic lavas from NW Tibet. The negative Mg-Zn isotope correlation (δ26Mg = −0.39‰ to −0.19‰; δ66Zn = +0.27‰ to +0.36‰), bolstered by petrographic analysis of mantle-derived xenoliths from these lavas, demonstrates that the ultrapotassic magmas originated from a lithospheric mantle source that had been enriched by recycled carbonate-bearing sediments rich in calcite and dolomite. Very low δ98Mo values (−0.78‰ to 0‰) relative to the average continental crust (δ98Mo = +0.10‰ to +0.35‰) further indicate that the sedimentary components were derived from the subducted Indian continental crust after its dehydration. Monte Carlo modeling estimates that the input flux of carbon (elemental C) from such sediments into the lithospheric mantle is ∼5.6 Mt/yr, with a predicted CO2 emission rate of ∼15.5 Mt/yr. We suggest that the still ongoing subduction of the Indian tectonic plate has played a crucial role in introducing substantial quantities of carbonate-rich sediments into the Tibetan lithospheric mantle, leading to the sequestration of large amounts of CO2 via carbonatite metasomatism. Hence, partial melting of such a carbon-rich mantle reservoir in an orogenic setting provides the positive feedback mechanism that can explain the high flux of volcanic CO2 during IndiaAsia collision. These findings not only highlight the importance of continental subduction, sediment recycling, and mantle metasomatism by carbon-rich melts/fluids in the generation of Tibetan ultrapotassic volcanism, but they also show how the deep carbon cycle influences volcanic CO2 degassing. Using new and published data, we synthesize the tectonic evolution of the Ottawa River Gneiss Complex (ORGC), the metamorphic core and detachment zone of a large mid- to late-Ottawan metamorphic core complex in the western Grenville Province. Field and petrologic data indicative of retrogression and exhumation, combined with maps and schematic crustal-scale sections, are used to document spatial and temporal relationships of multi-scale structures developed during its formation, of which the largest, termed mega-cross-folds and megaboudins, occur within and define the detachment zone. Mega-cross-folds, orogen-normal structures up to 70 km in length with coaxial constrictional fabrics in their hinge-lines, formed in a single phase of deformation during retrogression and exhumation. A cluster of asymmetric megaboudins, individually from 10–50 km long with granulite-facies cores and high-strain amphibolite-facies rims, similarly formed during syntectonic retrogression and exhumation of granulite-facies precursors. We argue the mega-cross-folds developed in a regime of regional transtension, whereas the megaboudin cluster formed by extensional inversion of an anastomosing early-Ottawan thrust system, with the strain patterns of both suggesting the detachment zone was the site of intense ductile flow between the stronger metamorphic core and cover. Comparison of these results with generic numerical models of extensional collapse of overthickened continental crust suggests the first-order tectonometamorphic features of the ORGC developed during necking of the upper crust and associated large-scale extensional flow of the mid and lower crust into the domiform necked region during collapse of the early-Ottawan thrust stack. The eastern Iranian range, known as the Sistan suture zone in the past, has recently been identified as the Sistan orogen. This Paleogene orogeny is located between the Lut and Afghan microcontinents. The structural analysis shows that most of the thrusts dip towards the NW so that the Permo-Triassic sediments and Jurassic micro-diorites of the Lut Block overthrusted over the younger rocks. Structural studies show that the tectonic vergence was from the NW to the SE of the Sechengi area in the NW part of Sistan orogen. We recognized three deformation phases in eastern Iran. The first N-S deformation event (D1) resulted in the formation of tight E-W folds (F1) and associated cleavages (S1). The second E-W deformation event (D2), which occurred in the late Paleogene led to the bending of older structures, including the axial plane of the first-generation folds giving them a new northwest direction (F2). Additionally, the ramp of the first-phase thrusts (striking E-W) was reactivated, acquiring a new NNW orientation and exhibiting SSE tectonic vergence. The third deformation event (D3) resulted in the formation of NNE and WNW conjugate faults in eastern Iran. Such consecutive deformation events perpendicular to each other are inconsistent with the models of simple linear orogen presented for eastern Iran (i.e. rifting of eastern Iran continental crust and subsequence linear collision) and seem more consistent with the buckling orogeny (Orocline). Lascar volcano, located in northern Chile, is among the most active volcanoes of the Andean Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ). Its activity culminated in the last major explosive eruption in April 1993. Lascar andesites which erupted in April 1993 have a phase assemblage composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, Fe–Ti oxides, and rhyolitic glass. To better constrain storage conditions and mechanisms of magmatic differentiation for andesitic magmas in a thick continental crust, crystallization experiments were performed in internally heated pressure vessels at 300 and 500 MPa, in the temperature (T) range of 900–1050 °C, at various water activities (a H 2 O) and oxygen fugacities (log f O 2 between QFM + 1.5 and QFM + 3.3 at a H 2 O =1 ; QFM is quartz–fayalite–magnetite oxygen buffer). The comparison of experimental products with natural phase assemblages, phase compositions, and whole-rock compositions was used to estimate magma storage conditions and to reconstruct the magma plumbing system. We estimate that Lascar two-pyroxene andesitic magmas were stored at 975±25 °C, 300±50 MPa, and log f O 2 of QFM +1.5±0.5 , under H 2 O-undersaturated conditions with 2.5 wt % to 4.5 wt % H 2 O in the melt. The geochemical characteristics of the entire suite of Lascar volcanics indicates that a fractionating magmatic system located at a depth of 10–13 km is periodically replenished with less evolved magma. Some eruptive stages were dominated by volcanic products resulting most probably from the mixing of a mafic andesitic magma with a felsic component, whereas compositional variations in other eruptive stages are better explained by crystal fractionation processes. The objective of this research was to assess sediments contamination, provenance and metal pollution using single and complex pollution indicators. Limbe River sediment samples were analysed using Inductively Coupled Plasma—Mass Spectrometry. The Limbe River sediments exhibit high content in Fe2O3 sourced from haematization of basaltic rocks. The concentration of Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr, V and Zn exceed upper continental crust and local baseline values for heavy metals. Correlation matrix analysis indicates the presence of common input sources and similar geochemical characteristics of heavy metals. Contamination factor (CF: 0.01–10.34), contamination degree (Cdeg: 14.91–36.57), pollution load index (PLI: 0.84–1.77), and nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI: 0.2–1.7) indicates significant to high levels of contamination. The enrichment factor (EF: 0–5.67) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo: -7.55–2.59), suggests moderate to significant metal pollution of the Limbe River ecosystem, suggesting potential ecological effects. Modified hazard quotient (mHQ: 0.082–6.35) and toxic risk index (TRI: 10.49–27.43), indicates low to extreme pollution severity and high toxicity risks of heavy metals to the aquatic ecosystem fauna and flora. Primarily anthropogenic activities and secondary lithogenic provenance is attributed to sediments contamination and metals pollution. This study suggests that a greater emphasis should be placed on monitoring various provenances of metals entering the aquatic ecosystem from anthropogenic practices. The study emphasizes the significance of continual protection of aquatic ecosystem and biological resources and adaptive management. The sources of fluids and metals in porphyry systems of continental-collision settings are poorly constrained. Mercury isotopes display unique mass-independent fractionation (expressed as Δ199Hg) and may provide important constraints on metal and volatile sources given that Hg is a highly volatile metal. Here, we report Hg isotope data on ore-forming porphyries, barren magmatic rocks, and mantle-derived mafic magmas from southern Tibet. The fertile porphyries and coeval mafic magmas display mainly positive Δ199Hg values (up to +0.25 per mil), while Δ199Hg values in barren magmatic rocks and mafic magmas are largely negative (-0.54 to 0.00 per mil). The positive Δ199Hg values observed here are consistent with seawater and marine sediments, suggesting that the ultimate source of fluids involved in the genesis of post-subduction porphyry copper deposits was the mantle lithosphere metasomatized by previous oceanic plate subduction. High Ba-Sr granites are geochemically distinct from the more familiar I-, S- and A-types (of igneous, sedimentary or anorogenic/anhydrous/alkaline parentage), in particular by their lack of depletion in Ba and Sr relative to other large-ion lithophile elements (LILE). These differences are sufficient enough to indicate different petrogenetic processes which are still the subject of considerable debate. High Ba-Sr plutons from the classic Caledonian type location in NW Scotland show a range of elemental and isotopic enrichment, ideal for novel petrogenetic investigations such as the application of "non-traditional" stable isotope systems. Two directly comparable plutons have been analysed for Ba and Mg isotopes, from either end of the range of enrichment. Barium isotopes (δ 138/134Ba values of −0.05 to +0.23 ‰ in the relatively "depleted" Strontian pluton and −0.19 to +0.03 ‰ in the enriched Rogart comparator) overlap normal mantle values but extend to lighter compositions, consistent with addition of up to 5 % pelagic sediment that has incorporated variable amounts of biogenic barite. Magnesium isotopes (δ26Mg values of −0.30 to −0.25 ‰ versus −0.42 to −0.23 ‰ in Strontian and Rogart, respectively) lie largely within the normal mantle range, with two light outliers possibly indicative of carbonate involvement but for which fractional crystallization cannot be excluded. Associated relationships between fluid-mobile and melt-mobile elements suggest that sediment melting transfers the crustal isotope signature to a dominantly mantle source, itself variable between isotopically depleted mantle wedge and previously enriched lithospheric mantle. The combined Ba, Mg, O, Sr, and Nd isotope and elemental data are all consistent with a small percentage of pelagic sediment in a mantle source for high Ba-Sr granites, and this is sufficient to disguise these essentially mantle-derived rocks as reworked continental crust. First-order estimates suggest that some 10 % of granites worldwide may have high Ba-Sr character, although the proportion of these that represent largely juvenile origin is currently unknown. Nevertheless, as compositional equivalents of Archean sanukitoids, they may represent unrecognized mantle contributions to crustal growth over some 3 billion years of Earth history. Tektite and microtektite formation have important implications on our understanding of impacts both on Earth, the Moon and on other bodies within our solar system. Here, we investigate the formation mechanisms of microtektites by analysing the K isotope systematics and elemental compositions of forty-four Australasian microtektites from various distances from the proposed impact location. Based on the K isotope and concentration data, the microtektites analyzed here are split into two groups, the "ODP group" and the "MB group". The ODP group were recovered from the Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) sediment cores and consist of microtektites which landed closer to the proposed impact site (∼1220–1240 km) and show limited δ41K variation (–1.06 ‰ to −0.21 ‰) and higher K concentrations (2.48 wt% to 3.66 wt% K 2 O). In contrast, the MB group were mostly collected from the surface of Miller Butte (MB) in Antarctica and represent microtektites which landed significantly further from the proposed impact site (∼4100–10800 km) and contain large δ41K variations (−4.04 ‰ to 0.57 ‰) and low K concentrations (0.49 wt% to 1.45 wt% K 2 O). For the microtektites studied here, the overall correlation observed is consistent with condensation whereby a greater extent of K depletion correlates with lighter K isotope compositions. This simple condensation model is in contrast to previous studies which find evidence for complex evolution involving evaporation, condensation, and mixing. For the ODP group microtektites, the isotopic and elemental data suggest condensation from an upper continental crust (UCC) starting composition. Conversely, for the MB group a UCC starting composition is not compatible, as even the most K-rich MB group microtektites are significantly depleted in K and display δ41K values much higher than the UCC. These observations can be explained by a vapor plume with a progressively evolving K isotope composition, with the earliest K condensates depleting and fractionating K within the plume, thus altering the starting K compositions for the later K condensates. From this data we calculate a cooling rate of up to 2,600 K/hour for the ODP group and up to 20,000 K/hour for the MB group, which are comparable to the cooling rates measured for tektites and considerably faster than those theoretically calculated or experimentally determined for chondrules. Overall, when assessed within the context of previous studies, microtektite formation appears very complex with evidence for different volatilization processes to different degrees observed within different microtektites. As such, while condensation appears dominant for K within the Australasian microtektites studied here, more work is needed to fully untangle the processes involved in microtektite formation. Triassic granitoids are widespread in the East Kunlun Orogen (EKO), with Middle Triassic granitoids being dominant and Late Triassic granitoids being subordinate. This paper presents new whole-rock geochemical and Sr – Nd isotope, and zircon U – Pb age and Lu – Hf isotope data for eight granitoids in the Lalingzaohuo area, western EKO, northern Tibetan Plateau. These granitoids yield Middle and Late Triassic ages of 245–239 and 223–220 Ma, respectively. The granitoids from the Lalingzaohuo area have features typical of I-type granites and belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series. They exhibit variable rare earth and trace element patterns, and Sr – Nd – Hf isotopic compositions, indicative of different petrogenetic processes. The Middle Triassic samples have higher ISr values of 0.71440–0.71572 and lower εNd(t) values of −6.18 to −4.26 than the Late Triassic samples (ISr = 0.71139–0.71348; εNd(t) = –3.23 to −1.51), which are consistent with I-type granitoids derived from the lower crust. Geochemical and isotopic data indicate that the two stages of I-type granitoids had a significant mantle contribution. The Middle Triassic granitoids in the EKO, particularly the western EKO, have adakitic characteristics and formed by partial melting of lower continental crust. The T2–T3 granites formed by oceanic slab breakoff related to subduction and mantle convection, and the Late Triassic granites formed by lithospheric thinning and asthenospheric upwelling after slab breakoff. Turbidity current deposition belongs to event deposition, which is of great significance to the study of neotectonic movement. However, turbidite deposits are rarely found in deep-sea basins. In this work, the particle size, mineralogy, and geochemistry of 14 deep-sea sediment cores from the Southwest Sub-basin (SWSB) of South China Sea (SCS) and its periphery are used to trace the sources of sediment and reveal the sedimentological and geochemical characteristics of deep-sea sediments. The results show that quartz and feldspar are the main minerals in the core sediments from the SWSB, and there are multiple layers of turbidites. Geochemical analysis reveals that the composition of the core sediments is close to that of the western margin of the SCS and is similar to that of the upper continental crust (UCC) and is inherited from terrigenous sediments. The Sr--Nd isotope results indicate that the sediment provenances of the SWSB are from the Mekong River, Sunda Shelf and Red River, showing the characteristics of multiple sources. Therefore, we propose that terrigenous materials from multiple sources can reach the deep-sea basin of the SWSB, and we also establish a transport model of deep-sea terrigenous sediment. Terrigenous materials were first carried by rivers and surface currents to the continental margins near the SWSB, and fine materials were subsequently transported by surface currents to the deep-sea basin, while coarse materials were subsequently transported by turbidity currents. The Rare Earth Element (REE) geochemistry of siliciclastic sediment in the Ilaje area, eastern Dahomey basin, southwestern Nigeria was conducted to determine the provenance, geotectonic setting as well the REE economic potential in the sediments. Geochemical analysis results (ppm) revealed the concentration of La varies from 1.87–21.47 while Ce ranges from 1.16–45.98. Others include; Pr (1.07–39.56), Nd (0.71–26.02), Sm (0.42–12.51), Eu (0.20–4.66), Gd (0.27–8.79), Tb (0.29–3.97), Dy (0.28–3.62), Ho (0.22–2.76), Er (0.29–2.64), Tm (0.33–3.83), Yb (0.37–3.75) and Lu (0.29–3.03) respectively while the ∑REE ranges from 2.25 to 6686.75 ppm. The REE normalization plot is characterized by an inclined shape depletion indicating depletion trend. The patterns show an enriched Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) and Heavy Rare Earth Element (HREE) pattern indicating upper continental crust sourced materials. The plot also revealed a negative Eu anomaly which may be associated with plagioclase fractionation in the acidic source rocks. This article presents the results of U–Pb (ID-TIMS) geochronological, geochemical, and Sm–Nd isotopic-geochemical studies of metavolcanic rocks of the Djagdagle Formation, which belong to the key elements of the Bureya continental massif. It was established that the age of metavolcanic rocks of the Djagdagle Formation is 217 ± 7 Ma and corresponds to the Late Triassic. This fact contradicts the traditional ideas, according to which the Djagdagle formation is the Early Precambrian in age. The results of Sm–Nd isotope studies of the metavolcanic rocks indicate the melting of rocks of continental crust with Paleoproterozoic model ages during the formation of initial melts. The new geochronological data and previously published data allow us to distinguish at least two stages of magmatic activity in the Triassic within the northwestern part of the Bureya massif: ~243 and 219–201 Ma. On the basis of synchronous of Neoproterozoic, Early Paleozoic, Late Paleozoic, and Early Mesozoic magmatic events in the geologic history of the Bureya and Songnen–Zhangguangcai Range massifs, an assumption about their common geological history at least since the Late Neoproterozoic has been proposed. The close spatial position of metavolcanic rocks of the Djagdagle Formation and the Mongol–Okhotsk Orogenic Belt, their Late Triassic age (217 ± 7 Ma), and geochemical features allow us to link the formation of initial melts of metavolcanic rocks of this formation with within-plate magmatism in the rear part of subduction zone of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean beneath the northern (in modern coordinates) margin of the Bureya continental massif. Large bursts of non‐volcanic tremor ("major" tremor episodes) correlated with geodetic deformation recur regularly in the Cascadia subduction zone and are often called episodic tremor and slip (ETS). Minor episodes of tremor between ETS are ubiquitous but have been understudied. This paper assesses time‐invariant characteristics of tremor episodes of all sizes within northern Cascadia. We derive a catalog of tremor episodes ranging in size from 10 to >13,000 tremor events using the results of 17 years of tremor monitoring. Minor episodes represent ∼96% of all 896 tremor episodes and their occurrence varies on 10‐km scales. Using estimates for the depth of the forearc Moho and subducting slab, we observe an association between the location of the forearc mantle corner (FMC) and tremor occurrence that leads to along‐dip modality. Bimodality, present in southern Washington and Vancouver Island, represents the segmentation of major and minor episodes up‐dip and down‐dip of the FMC, respectively. Unimodality, present in Puget Sound, results when the FMC is located near the down‐dip edge of the ETS zone and no segmentation occurs. We also use our extensive tremor episode catalog alongside three‐dimensional regional tomographic velocity models to reassess the relationship between tremor activity and low Vp/Vs signatures in the forearc. We do not find a correlation between tremor episode recurrence intervals and Vp/Vs, contrary to some previous work, suggesting that controls on silica precipitation in the forearc crust are not dominant controls of tremor episode recurrence, or that the association is not widely observable. Plain Language Summary: The Cascadia subduction zone hosts slow earthquakes that are observed as non‐volcanic tremor and surface deformation. Tremor events are typically clustered in time and space, and we define minor and major tremor episodes to be clusters consisting of small and large numbers of tremor events, respectively. Based on a 17‐year record of tremor in northern Cascadia, we use observations of a wide range of episode sizes (10 to >13,000 tremor events) to investigate their spatial characteristics and improve our understanding of the subduction zone. We find that the intersection of the upper‐plate crust/mantle boundary and the subducting plate, called the forearc mantle corner, controls the distribution of tremor along the dip‐direction of the subduction zone as well as the separation of major and minor episodes. From this, we infer that the forearc mantle corner creates a variety of physical conditions that result in specific spatial patterns of tremor behaviors. We also use our record of tremor episodes to reassess the relationship between upper‐plate composition and the recurrence of tremor episodes. Contrary to previous work, we do not find any link between the two, suggesting that processes controlling tremor episode recurrence do not significantly influence the composition of the continental crust. Abundant mafic-felsic intrusions distributed in the Altyn Orogen record orogenic histories related to Proto-Tethys and Paleo-Tethys evolution. Zircon U-Pb dating of the intrusive rocks in the eastern Altyn Orogen identifies at least three major tectono-magmatic episodes, yielding ages of ∼426, ∼376–373 and ∼269–254 Ma. The first two emplacement episodes correspond to the post-collisional magmatism in the Altyn Orogen. The ∼426 Ma granitoids possess adakitic characteristics coupled with enriched isotopes, suggesting that they originated from partial melting of thickened lower continental crust induced by upwelling asthenospheric mantle after slab break-off of the South Altyn Ocean Plate. Next, the ∼376–373 Ma mafic-intermediate rocks and coeval granitoids represent a large thermal event that involved mantle melting with induced new juvenile lower continental crust melting in a post-collisional extensional setting. Finally, the ∼254 Ma diabase dykes intruded into the ∼269 Ma granitoids, which were related to the widespread Late Paleozoic magmatism resulting from Paleo-Tethys Ocean subduction. Post-collisional magmatism in the Altyn Orogen significantly enhances understanding of the tectono-magmatic evolution in the northern Tibetan Plateau. The penetrative influence of Paleo-Tethys Ocean subduction was more extensive than previously thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rates of melt production, extraction and crystallization, as well as scales of melt transfer and interaction with their residuum change continuously in migmatite and granulite, affecting the behavior of monazite and zircon as time capsules. Therefore, accessory mineral chronometers may be ambiguous and incomplete in providing an overview of the temperature–time evolution of high-grade metamorphic rocks. In this study, we applied the novel technique of in situ U–Pb dating of garnet to the archetypal lower continental crust of the Ivrea–Verbano Zone (IVZ), NW Italy. In the IVZ, the temporal relationship between granulite-facies metamorphism and mafic underplating has long been debated, because of the interplay between tectonic, magmatic, metamorphic and metasomatic processes over a period of more than a hundred million years. Garnet from mafic and pelitic granulites yielded U–Pb ages between 287.4 ± 4.9 Ma and 280.1 ± 12.4 Ma, overlapping within uncertainty the time proposed for the emplacement of the Mafic Complex (286–282 Ma). These results indicate that the thermal climax in granulitic rocks was caused by mafic underplating and concomitant asthenospheric upwelling, rather than being inherited from the post-Variscan Carboniferous evolution. Providing robust dating of garnet with as low as 4 ng/g U, this study demonstrates the strength of garnet petrochronology in resolving complex tectono-metamorphic histories of high-grade terranes. The incremental construction of plutons characterises magmatic activity in arc settings, where new continental crust is produced. This polyphasic growth entails interactions with one or more crustal components, which modulate the geochemical and isotopic compositions of the newly formed crust. However, the early stages of magmatism are not always preserved due to obliteration by later magmatic pulses. Spatial migration of magmatism during the construction of the Adamello batholith (Northern Italy) enables the examination of the early pulses of pluton formation, thus allowing a time-integrated study of the relative importance of crystallisation-differentiation and contamination in a continental arc setting. We conducted a detailed textural, major and trace element and Sr isotopic study of plagioclase from the first intrusive pulses of the Adamello batholith, combined with new major, trace element and Sr–Nd isotopic analyses of bulk rock samples across the entire Adamello batholith. We selected well-characterised samples with published CA-ID-TIMS 206Pb-238U ages and Hf isotopic composition for zircons. Strontium isotopes in plagioclase from the same samples were determined by laser ablation multi-collector ICP-MS. The tonalitic samples in the early magmatic stages show elevated but constant Sr isotopic compositions despite large variations in anorthite contents (An90 to An13), indicating that crustal contamination occurred before significant differentiation. Invariant bulk-rock 87Sr/86Sr with variable SiO2 in all superunits of the Adamello batholith further supports contamination preceding significant melt differentiation. Contamination by lower crustal basement lithologies is due to the increasing thermal anomaly triggered by consecutive magmatic injections coupled with the heterogeneous and less restitic nature of the basement in the early stage of the magmatic system (i.e. before consumption of fusible components). In addition, we observe significant variability in crustal contamination proxies (e.g. 87Sr/86Srplag, 87Sr/86Srbulk, εNdbulk, εHfzircon) during the initial phases of magmatism. This variability likely reflects the uneven distribution of positive thermal anomalies in the lower crust during early magmatic stages as well as the diverse lithological and isotopic makeup of the lower crust. SUMMARY: Greenland's tectonic history is complex, and the resulting lithospheric structure is, although extensively researched, not well constrained. In this study, we model the lithospheric structure of Greenland in a consistent, integrated framework with three steps. First, we build a lithospheric background model by forward modelling, adjusted to gravity gradient data and shear wave velocities from a regional tomography model. Subsequently, we jointly invert for the upper crustal density and susceptibility structure by minimizing the gravity residuals and magnetic total field anomaly misfit. The last modelling step searches for upper crustal thermal parameters to fit our model to the most recent geothermal heat flow predictions for Greenland. Finally, we present 3-D models of the density, temperature and velocity structure for the lithosphere as well as thermal parameters and susceptibilities for the upper crust. Our model also includes the depth of the Moho and LAB in Greenland. A comparison between inverted crustal parameters and surface geology shows a clear correlation. Platinum-group elements (PGEs) have a strong affinity for sulfur and tend to accumulate in the deep continental crust, either concentrated within magmatic Cu-Ni-PGE deposits or dispersed throughout disseminated sulfides. However, PGE enrichment in shallow magmatic-hydrothermal systems implies an obscure link to deep sulfide destabilization, which releases PGEs into ore-forming fluids. To bridge this gap, our study investigates the PGE composition of magmatic sulfides with oxidative textures in dacitic rocks from the southwestern Okinawa Trough. We identified three groups of magmatic sulfides, primarily precipitated as Cu-poor monosulfide solid solution (MSS), which formed at distinct stages of magma evolution from deep to shallow crustal levels. Group A sulfides manifest as small-sized inclusions (<30 μm) within most high-Mg olivines, whereas Group B and C sulfides are larger (50–500 μm) and occur within cognate xenoliths of mafic cumulate rocks and the groundmass of host dacites. Group B and C sulfides exhibit distinct oxidative textures and newly-formed mineral assemblages, including magnetite, hematite, goethite, and magnetite ± pyrite, alongside hydrothermal silicate minerals, respectively. We attribute the oxidation process to the infiltration of orthomagmatic fluids exsolved from mafic magma that had underplated the sulfide-bearing felsic magma reservoir, which was nearly solidified. By comparing the chemical compositions between pristine sulfides and their oxidative remnants, we observed extensive mobilization of Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Ni, and Co from the altered sulfides of Group B, while Au enrichment occurred as nanoparticles under high oxidation states. In contrast, Au was extracted along with other mobile metals from the altered sulfides of Group C, with Pt remaining in place under more reduced conditions. These distinct scenarios may lead to the formation of PGE-rich and Au-rich fluids, respectively. The formation of deep crustal MSS and subsequent hydrothermal oxidation under varying redox conditions thus provides a viable mechanism for trans -crustal PGE mobilization and inter-element fractionation, typical of PGE-rich magmatic-hydrothermal deposits. The Neoproterozoic granitic rocks of Mount Abu Kibash and Tulayah in the central Eastern Desert of Egypt are of geodynamic interest and provide us with important information about the evolution and growth of the northern part of the Arabian–Nubian Shield (ANS) continental crust. They are primarily composed of granodiorites and syenogranites based on new field, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses. The granodiorites are marked by an enrichment of LILEs such as Sr, K, Rb, Ba compared to HFSEs like Nb, Ta, Ti and show a higher concentration of LREEs relative to HREEs. This composition suggests a subduction-related setting and aligns with the characteristics of subducted I-type granites in the ANS. Chemistry of the analyzed primary amphiboles in the investigated granodiorites support a calc-alkaline nature, mixed source and subduction-related setting. The granodiorites represent an early magmatic phase in this setting, likely formed from a mix of mantle-derived mafic magmas and lower crust material, with subsequent fractional crystallization. On the other hand, syenogranites exhibit high SiO2 (72.02–74.02 wt%), total alkali (7.82–8.01 wt%), and Al2O3 (13.79–14.25 wt%) levels, suggesting their derivation from peraluminous (A/CNK > 1) parental magmas. Their REE-normalized patterns are flat with a pronounced negative Eu anomaly, typical of post-collisional A2-type granites worldwide. These rocks originated from the partial melting of a juvenile lower crustal source (tonalite) in a post-collisional setting, driven by lithospheric delamination that facilitated mantle upwelling and underplating to the lower crust. Interaction between the upwelled mantle and lower crust led to fertilization (enrichment with HFSE and alkalis) of the lithosphere before partial melting. Fractional crystallization coupled with less considerable crustal assimilation are the main magmatic processes during the evolution of these rocks. The transition from subduction to post-collisional setting was accompanied by crustal uplifting, thickening and extensional collapse of ANS continental crust that caused emplacement of large masses of A-type granites in the northern ANS. The Lujiang–Chuzhou Metallogenic Area is an important component of the Middle–Lower Yangtze River Valley Metallogenic Belt. Despite being an important copper–gold deposit in this area, the Shanlixu skarn Cu-Au deposit has not yet been systematically studied. According to LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating, the quartz monzonite porphyry from the Shanlixu deposit is aged 137.5 ± 1.7 Ma: while it differs from the timing of the magmatism and related mineralization in the Lujiang–Chuzhou Area, it is consistent with magmatic activity elsewhere in the Middle–Lower Yangtze River Valley Metallogenic Belt. The Ce4+/Ce3+ values of zircon in the quartz monzonite porphyry vary from 204.5 to 886.5, indicating that the intrusion might have formed in an environment with high oxygen fugacity. Additionally, the quartz monzonite porphyry exhibits high contents of Al2O3, Sr, Ba, and Mg# (Mg# = Mg2+/(Mg2+ + Fe2+)) and low ratios of Y, Nb, Ta, and K2O/Na2O, showing geochemical characteristics similar to those of adakitic rocks. Based on these characteristics, it is suggested that the intrusion might have been derived from the partial melting of subducted oceanic crust under a continental arc margin setting. Furthermore, it is strongly indicated that the quartz monzonite porphyry from the Shanlixu deposit, in the Lujiang–Chuzhou Area, is closely related to Cu-Au mineralization, as suggested by the age of the intrusion, which is approximately 137 Ma. Sedimentary‐derived (S‐type) granites are an important product of orogenic metamorphism, and a range of subtypes can be recognized by differences in field occurrence, mineralogy and geochemistry. These subtypes can reflect variations of initial protolith composition, partial melting reactions, pressure and temperature of anatexis, or magmatic processes that occur during ascent through the crust (e.g. mineral fractional crystallization or crustal assimilation). Together, these diverse factors complicate geological interpretation of the history of peraluminous felsic melt fractions in orogenic settings. To assess the influence of these factors, we performed integrated field investigation, petrology, geochemistry, geochronology and phase equilibrium modelling on a series of leucosomes within migmatite associated with different S‐type granites within the Khondalite belt, North China craton (NCC), which is an archetypal collisional orogen. Three types of leucosome are recognized in the east Khondalite belt: leucogranitic leucosome, K‐feldspar (Kfs)‐rich granitic leucosome and garnet (Grt)‐rich granitic leucosome. Phase equilibrium modelling of partial melting and fractional crystallization processes indicate that the leucogranitic leucosomes were mostly produced through fluid‐present melting, Kfs‐rich granitic leucosomes are produced through muscovite dehydration melting with 3 vol.% garnet fractional crystallization, and Grt‐rich granitic leucosomes are produced through biotite dehydration melting with 20–40 vol.% K‐feldspar fractional crystallization and up to 20 vol.% peritectic garnet entrainment. Mineral fractional crystallization and peritectic mineral entrainment occur in the source during melting, and play equally important roles in partial melting mechanisms in terms of affecting the geochemical compositions of granitic melts. Thus, we suggest that peraluminous felsic magmas preserved in collisional orogens are dominantly produced by fluid‐absent melting in the middle to deep continental crust, although extraction of low‐volume melt fractions from an anatectic source region at shallower depths during fluid‐present melting can also generate small amounts of S‐type granites that subsequently crystallize at high structural levels in the crust. High‐elevation, low‐relief continental plateaus are major topographic features and profoundly influence atmospheric circulation, sediment transport and storage, and biodiversity. Although orogenic surface‐uplift mechanisms for modern continental plateaus near known plate margins like Tibet are well‐characterized, they cannot account for examples in intracontinental settings like the Colorado Plateau. In contrast to canonical plate‐tectonic uplift mechanisms, broad‐scale hydration‐induced metasomatism of the lower crust has been suggested to reduce its density and increase its buoyancy sufficiently to contribute to isostatic uplift. However, the relationships between key petrophysical properties in these environments are not fully quantified, which limits application of this model. Here, we develop a series of petrological models that describe the petrological and topographic effects of fluid–rock interaction in non‐deforming continental crust of varying composition. We apply an open‐system petrological modelling framework that utilizes reactive‐transport calculations to determine the spatial and temporal scales over which mineralogic transformations take place compared with the magnitude of infiltration of aqueous fluids derived from devolatilization of subducting oceanic lithosphere. The buoyancy effect of hydration‐induced de‐densification is most significant for metabasic lower crust, intermediate for metapelitic crust, and minimal for granodioritic crust. We apply these results to a case study of the ~2 km‐high Colorado Plateau and demonstrate that under ideal conditions, hydration of its lower–middle crust by infiltrating aqueous fluids released by the Farallon slab during Cenozoic low‐angle subduction could have uplifted the plateau surface by a maximum of ~1 km over 16 Myr. However, realistically, although hydration likely has a measurable effect on surface tectonics, the uplift of orogenic plateaus is likely dominantly controlled by other factors, such as lithospheric delamination. A flare‐up of granitoids occurred at 465–445 Ma in the South Altyn Tagh, synchronously with the exhumation of subducted continental crust. Nevertheless, it remains enigmatic whether a petrogenetic connection exists between them. Here, we report a 454–451 Ma monzogranite pluton, which is characterized by abundant inherited zircons, located in the northern margin of the South Altyn Tagh high‐pressure (HP)—ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) metamorphic terrane. U–Pb ages and Hf–O isotopic compositions of inherited and synmagmatic zircons are investigated to trace the source rocks and petrogenesis of this pluton. The inherited zircons (zircons that predate the magmatism) exhibit a wide range of ages from 2618 to 484 Ma, displaying three major peaks at 1800–1100 Ma, 1000–800 Ma and 500 Ma. By comparing these inheritance age patterns with zircon spectra of main (meta‐)sedimentary sequences and the widespread Early Neoproterozoic granites (presently as granitic gneisses) in South Altyn Tagh, along with zircon εHf(t) and whole‐rock Nd isotopic composition, we argue that the main source rocks of the studied monzogranite are Early Neoproterozoic granitic gneisses and Late Mesoproterozoic paragneisses from the South Altyn Tagh HP–UHP metamorphic terrane. The ca. 500 Ma inherited zircons have a metamorphic origin, which is simultaneous with the peak metamorphic ages of HP–UHP metamorphic rocks in the Altyn Tagh Complex. These observations indicate that the source rocks of the monzogranite pluton are the subducted continental crust, which underwent metamorphism at ca. 500 Ma and followed by partial melting at 454–451 Ma. In addition, synmagmatic zircons exhibit variable δ18O and εHf(t) values ranging from 5.4 to 11.7‰ and from −19 to +10.3, respectively, indicating a minor contribution of mantle‐derived melts in the formation of the monzogranite. Given the studied pluton and contemporaneous extensive granitoids (465–445 Ma), characterized by similar geochemistry and source rocks, are synchronous with the final exhumation of subducted South Altyn Tagh continental crust, we propose that the reworking of exhumed continental crust at middle to lower crustal depths is their main petrogenesis. Geochronological (U-Pb zircon, ID-TIMS), isotope-geochemical (Nd, Sr, Pb), and geochemical studies of rocks of the Amanan and Amudzhikan intrusive complexes and volcanic rocks of the Ukurey Formation in the eastern part of the West Stanovoy superterrane of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt were performed. The assignment of granitoids of these complexes to high-potassium C-type adakites is substantiated. It is established that the studied rocks are cogenetic and can be ascribed to a single Amudzhikan volcano-plutonic association formed in the age range of 133 ± 1–128 ± 1 Ma. The igneous complexes of this association belong to the Stanovoy volcano-plutonic belt, which extends in the sublatitudinal direction from the Pacific Ocean inward the North Asian continent for more than 1000 km, subparallel to the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone, and assembles the tectonic structures of the Dzhugdzhur-Stanovoy and West-Stanovoy superterranes. The formation of the Stanovoy Belt is related to the closure of the Mongolo-Okhotsk Ocean and the collision between North Asian and Sino-Korean continents at ~140 Ma. The subsequent collapse of the collisional orogen, which was accompanied by large-scale lithospheric extension and delamination of the lower part of the continental lithosphere, led to upwelling of asthenospheric mantle. This caused melting of the lithospheric mantle and continental crust and, as a consequence, the formation of both mafic (shoshonitic) melts and anatectic crustal melts of the adakite type. The mixing of these melts led to the formation of the parental magmas of the Amudzhikan magmatic association. The crustal component in the source was of heterogeneous nature and finally formed as a result of the Early Cretaceous collision event. It is characterized by the upper-crustal isotopic signatures: increased Rb/Sr and U/Pb ratios and a decreased Sm/Nd ratio in the source. The mantle component is represented by enriched lithospheric mantle of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, the formation of which is associated with subduction processes and closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk paleoocean. Miocene breakup of Svalbard from Greenland formed a deep oceanic gateway that enabled circulation between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, significantly changing the global climate. However, the timing of events remains unclear. An excellent opportunity to constrain this timing is found onshore western Svalbard, where the Sarsbukta fault forms the eastern margin of the Eocene–Oligocene Forlandsundet basin. Here, we present new results from U-Pb dating of calcite precipitated in fault-related veins to constrain the timing of Sarsbukta fault deformation and the evolution of the basin. Our oldest calcite age is Permo-Triassic, suggesting long-lived deformation along the fault. A cluster of ages between 41 and 33 Ma overlaps with fossil-based depositional ages from parts of the Forlandsundet basin. These data indicate that onshore transtension partly pre-dated the well-established Chron 13 (magnetic polarity time scale; 35.5–33.7 Ma) reorganization of spreading ridges in the North Atlantic. Our youngest age of 13 Ma indicates that faulting persisted long after the preserved basin fill was deposited. If seafloor spreading marked the end of extension of continental crust, Molloy Ridge spreading during Chron 5 (19.6–9.8 Ma) may have initiated after 13 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Alpine Corsica (France), the Santa Lucia Nappe represents a peculiar unit preserving the unique relicts of Paleozoic lower to medium continental crust. It consists of composite basement affected by Permian granulite facies metamorphic conditions unconformably covered by a Late Cretaceous clastic sequence (Tomboni Conglomerate and Tralonca Flysch) affected by polyphase deformation and low‐grade‐metamorphism. In this work, we present a new reconstruction of the deformation events registered by the Tralonca Flysch during the Alpine orogeny. The D1 phase was testified by rare isoclinal folds. The D2 phase produced a continuous foliation and a map‐scale sheath‐fold with a top‐to‐W sense of shear. The D3 phase produced E‐verging non‐cylindrical folds and S3 crenulation cleavage that is not associated to metamorphic blastesis. We present the first temperature‐pressure‐deformation (P‐T‐d) path for the Tralonca Flysch, demonstrating that the Santa Lucia Nappe underwent accretion and then first stage exhumation in the Alpine wedge during the D1 phase with pressure and temperature peaks both occurred under blueschist metamorphic conditions. The D2 phase occurred at lower pressure‐temperature conditions during a second stage exhumation. This pressure‐temperature‐deformation path is comparable with those of the Lower Units (i.e., the subducted continental units of Alpine Corsica) suggesting a common geodynamic history. The brittle‐plastic transition (BPT), the strongest part of the crust, is critical to continental geodynamics but is poorly understood relative to simpler crust above and below. It is typically represented as a depth transition from brittle/frictional to plastic/viscous deformation controlled by temperature and pressure. Footwalls of low‐angle normal faults (LANFs) exhumed through the BPT provide rock records that challenge this view. Three well‐studied LANF footwalls are reviewed. All record geochemical, mineralogical and fluid‐related controls on embrittlement, not just monotonic P‐T decrease. Two quartz‐rich examples record embrittlement at unexpectedly high T (≥450–500°C) that was modulated by wetting characteristics of fluids. One had an inverted BPT: brittle fracture beneath contemporaneous mylonites. In another study, a brittle LANF grew from plastic mylonites due to mineralogic changes that strengthened parts, causing initial frictional slip and cataclasis on weak planes that ultimately linked. In all, geologically abrupt small‐scale processes controlled behavior at kilometer scales. Similar processes likely affect other tectonic settings and seismic cycles. Such processes offer fertile research opportunities in continental geodynamics; they will be increasingly tractable as computational abilities improve. Adaptive, multi‐scale approaches including the effects of fluid‐rock geochemistry and mineralogical changes on rock strength and deformation are needed. Thoughtful modeling approaches may yield key insights into the positive and negative feedbacks that are likely. Discontinuous deformation is probably needed explicitly along with exploration of initial and boundary conditions. Plain Language Summary: The strongest part of continental crust is the brittle‐plastic transition (BPT) in the midcrust at ∼10–20 km depth. There, brittle behavior (fault slip, fracturing, fragmentation), which increases in strength downward, gives way to "ductile" behavior dominated by crystal plasticity of quartz, which decreases in strength downward. The BPT is less well understood than either brittle crust above or plastic crust below. The transition is generally modeled and thought of as being dominated by a downward increase in temperature and pressure, but studies of faults that evolved from being plastically deforming shear zones to brittle slip surfaces suggest that abrupt and localized geochemical, mineralogical and fluid processes are also very important. Such processes are currently little represented in numerical geodynamic models of the crust. Their inclusion in future models will probably lead to important insights into crustal geodynamics. Investigating the carbonate preservation efficiency (CPE) of continental crust is crucial to understand the global carbon cycle, which requires constraints on initial carbonate abundances (ICAs) of crustal rocks. To link Mg isotopes to ICAs, we present elemental and Mg isotopic data for Himalayan carbonate‐bearing and carbonate‐free metasedimentary rocks. Given no evident melt extraction or external‐fluid infiltration, ICAs of these samples can be independently estimated by elemental data. Despite different carbonate species in the protoliths, all the samples show congruent relationship between their δ26Mg and ICAs, owing to the elevated carbonate δ26Mg and Mg/Ca in protoliths of calcite‐rich samples resulting from diagenetic processes. When collated with literature data, we suggest the observed correlation here can be applied to most carbonate‐bearing (meta‐)sedimentary rocks. Based on a steady state box‐model, we constrained the modern net carbonate accretion flux (9.50−5.56+9.50 ${9.50}_{-5.56}^{+9.50}$ Tmol/year) and the average time‐integrated CPE (∼80−43+20 ${80}_{-43}^{+20}$%) for continental crust. Plain Language Summary: Investigating the fate of carbonate preserved in continental crust is fundamental for understanding its role playing in the global carbon cycle, but is hindered by the lack of knowledge about the initial carbonate abundance of metasedimentary rocks prior to modification (e.g., anatexis). By analyzing Himalayan metasedimentary rocks, here we show a congruent relationship between their δ26Mg and initial carbonate abundances, irrespective of their protolith carbonate species, and suggest it is applicable to most carbonate‐bearing (meta‐)sedimentary rocks. Based on this relationship, the carbonate preservation in continental crust was simulated using a steady state box‐model. The results indicate a very high carbonate accretion influx to the continental crust, seven times higher than the C degassing flux in the mid‐ocean ridge. Considering explosive degassing of the accreted carbonates during episodic tectonomagmatic events, the continental crust could have been an important driving force for regulating the atmospheric CO2 during Earth's history. The Lhasa‐Qiangtang collision closed the Meso‐Tethys Ocean, but the exact timing of this event remains hotly debated. Here, we present geochronological and paleomagnetic analyses conducted on Cretaceous volcanics from western Qiangtang to constrain the Lhasa‐Qiangtang collision in western Tibet. Our investigations yield a paleolatitude of ∼30.5 ± 5.0°N for western Qiangtang during ca. 110–100 Ma. A reanalysis of previously acquired Mesozoic‐Cenozoic paleomagnetic data from western Qiangtang suggests a stationary position during ca. 136–34 Ma. Examination of paleomagnetic data from western Lhasa reveals a significant reduction in northward paleolatitudinal motion during the Early Cretaceous, dropping from ∼12.3 cm/yr to nearly zero. Integration of our paleomagnetic findings with available geological records has led to conclude that the Lhasa‐Qiangtang collision in western Tibet occurred at ca. 132 Ma. Additionally, we infer that crustal shortening on the order of ∼1,000 km happened between Lhasa and Qiangtang during the Early Cenozoic. Their convergence histories toward Euraisa have changed the global land‐sea distributions since the Late Paleozoic. The time at which the Lhasa block, one of the Tibetan blocks, accreted to the Qiangtang block to the north remains poorly constrained. In this work, we provide robust data suggesting a latitude of ∼30.5 ± 5.0°N for western Qiangtang during the Early Cretaceous (ca. 110–100 Ma). We also compiled the available latitudinal data from western Tibet in combination with geological observations. We suggest Lhasa collided with Qiangtang during 132 million years ago in western Tibet. Due to the scarcity of rock samples, the Hadean Era predating 4 billion years ago (Ga) poses challenges in understanding geological processes like subaerial weathering and plate tectonics that are critical for the evolution of life. The Jack Hills zircon from Western Australia, the primary Hadean samples available, offer valuable insights into magma sources and tectonic genesis through trace element signatures. However, a consensus on these signatures has not been reached. To address this, we developed a machine learning classifier capable of deciphering the geochemical fingerprints of zircon. This allowed us to identify the oldest detrital zircon originating from sedimentary-derived "S-type" granites. Our results indicate the presence of S-type granites as early as 4.24 Ga, persisting throughout the Hadean into the Archean. Examining global detrital zircon across Earth's history reveals consistent supercontinent-like cycles from the present back to the Hadean. These findings suggest that a significant amount of Hadean continental crust was exposed, weathered into sediments, and incorporated into the magma sources of Jack Hills zircon. Only the early operation of both subaerial weathering and plate subduction can account for the prevalence of S-type granites we observe. Additionally, the periodic evolution of S-type granite proportions implies that subduction-driven tectonic cycles were active during the Hadean, at least around 4.2 Ga. The evidence thus points toward an early Earth resembling the modern Earth in terms of active tectonics and habitable surface conditions. A response of global seismic activity to the geomagnetic storms of St. Patrick's Day (March 17) in 2013 and 2015 is investigated. These two storms occurred during nearly identical storm sudden commencement times and similar solar flux levels. We have revealed a rather similar pattern of the most substantial earthquakes that have occurred since these storms. Two major crust continental earthquakes, in Iran (M = 7.7), 16 April 2013, and in Nepal (M = 7.8), 25 April 2015, have occurred with a time delay of ~30 and ~39 days after geomagnetic storm onsets in 2013 and 2015, respectively. After that, the great and major deep-focused earthquakes occurred beneath the Sea of Okhotsk (M = 8.3, 24 May 2013, Russia) and the Pacific Ocean (M = 7.8, 30 May 2015, Japan) with a time delay of ~68 and ~74 days, respectively. Geomagnetic storm onsets occurred at 06:04 UT in 2013 and 04:48 UT in 2015. At this time, the high latitudinal areas of the longitudinal regions, in which the mentioned earthquakes occurred in the future, were located under the polar cusp, where the solar wind plasma has direct access to the Earth's environment. An analysis of the remaining ten earthquakes with M ≥ 7.5, which occurred around the globe in 2013 and 2015, proved the above findings that seismic activity may respond to geomagnetic storm onset with a time delay from some days to some months. The West Qinling Orogenic Belt (WQOB) in central China records the tectonic evolution and deep geodynamics process associated with plate collision on the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The study of the deep-seated West Qinling structure is beneficial for revealing the evolution of the West Qinling crust during the continental collision orogeny, and also has significance for mineral exploration. In this study, the crustal structure and the distribution of major faults in the West Qinling Orogen are calculated by processing geophysical aeromagnetic and ground gravity data. The density and magnetic susceptibility differences between the West Qinling crust and the upper mantle are calculated by fitting, and the depth and trend of the faults related are inferred from the gravity and magnetic inversion results. Due to the overall subduction of the lower crust of the Ruoergai to the West Qinling Orogenic Belt, the structural deformation within the West Qinling is strong, and the geophysical magnetic field and gravity field are suddenly changed. It is indicated that the formation of the Diebu-Sanhe fault may have a strong correlation with the Mianlue suture zone, and their intersection may penetrate into the lower crust at a depth of about 50 km or more. The West Qinling structure represents important conduits for migrating magmatic-derived hydrothermal fluids. During the continental collision, the West Qinling major faults provided hydrothermal migration channels for ore-forming materials in different tectonic periods. Before large volumes of crystal poor rhyolites are mobilized as melt, they are extracted through the reduction of pore space within their corresponding crystal matrix (compaction). Petrological and mechanical models suggest that a significant fraction of this process occurs at intermediate melt fractions (ca. 0.3–0.6). The timescales associated with such extraction processes have important ramifications for volcanic hazards. However, it remains unclear how melt is redistributed at the grain‐scale and whether using continuum scale models for compaction is suitable to estimate extraction timescales at these melt fractions. To explore these issues, we develop and apply a two‐phase continuum model of compaction to two suites of analog phase separation experiments—one conducted at low and the other at high temperatures, T, and pressures, P. We characterize the ability of the crystal matrix to resist porosity change using parameterizations of granular phenomena and find that repacking explains both data sets well. A transition between compaction by repacking to melt‐enhanced grain boundary diffusion‐controlled creep near the maximum packing fraction of the mush may explain the difference in compaction rates inferred from high T + P experiments and measured in previous deformation experiments. When upscaling results to magmatic systems at intermediate melt fractions, repacking may provide an efficient mechanism to redistribute melt. Finally, outside nearly instantaneous force chain disruption events occasionally recorded in the low T + P experiments, melt loss is continuous, and two‐phase dynamics can be solved at the continuum scale with an effective matrix viscosity. The magma occupies the pore space between a connected network of crystals and the difference in density between crystal and magma leads to separation. During the separation process, the crystal networks behave like a sponge and magma percolates upward and is extracted as the pore space in the network of crystals closes. Magma collects atop the "sponge" and can potentially go on to feed volcanic eruptions at the Earth's surface. Therefore, how quickly it can separate has implications for monitoring volcanic hazards. When the porosity of the "sponge" is sufficiently low, the closing of pore space can only proceed if individual crystals are deformed (bent, for instance) and the process is slow. At larger porosities, however, the pore space can be closed by the sliding or rotation of crystals. We model this sliding process and compare our model to analog experiments and find that sliding may allow for this process to be efficient. Accurately determining the seismic structure of the continental deep crust is crucial for understanding its geological evolution and continental dynamics in general. However, traditional tools such as surface waves often face challenges in solving the trade‐offs between elastic parameters and discontinuities. In this work, we present a new approach that combines two established inversion techniques, receiver function H‐κ stacking and joint inversion of surface wave dispersion and receiver function waveforms, within a Bayesian Monte Carlo (MC) framework to address these challenges. Demonstrated by synthetic tests, the new method greatly reduces trade‐offs between critical parameters, such as the deep crustal Vs, Moho depth, and crustal Vp/Vs ratio. This eliminates the need for assumptions regarding crustal Vp/Vs ratios in joint inversion, leading to a more accurate outcome. Furthermore, it improves the precision of the upper mantle velocity structure by reducing its trade‐off with Moho depth. Additional notes on the sources of bias in the results are also included. Application of the new approach to USArray stations in the Northwestern US reveals consistency with previous studies and identifies new features. Notably, we find elevated Vp/Vs ratios in the crystalline crust of regions such as coastal Oregon, suggesting potential mafic composition or fluid presence. Shallower Moho depth in the Basin and Range indicates reduced crustal support to the elevation. The uppermost mantle Vs, averaging 5 km below Moho, aligns well with the Pn‐derived Moho temperature variations, offering the potential of using Vs as an additional constraint to Moho temperature and crustal thermal properties.
