Widespread insect losses are a critical global problem. Mitigating this problem requires identifying the principal drivers across different taxa and determining which insects are covered by protected areas. However, doing so is hindered by missing information on most species owing to extremely high insect diversity and difficulties in morphological identification. To address this knowledge gap, we used one of the most comprehensive insect DNA metabarcoding data sets assembled (encompassing 31,846 flying insect species) in which data were collected from a network of 75 Malaise traps distributed across Germany. Collection sites encompass gradients of land cover, weather, and climate, along with differences in site protection status, which allowed us to gain broader insights into how insects respond to these factors. We examined changes in total insect biomass, species richness, temporal turnover, and shifts in the composition of taxa, key functional groups (pollinators, threatened species, and invasive species), and feeding traits. Lower insect biomass generally equated to lower richness of all insects and higher temporal turnover, suggesting that biomass loss translates to biodiversity loss and less stable communities. Spatial variability in insect biomass and composition was primarily driven by land cover, rather than weather or climate change. As vegetation and land‐cover heterogeneity increased, insect biomass increased by 50% in 2019 and 56% in 2020 and total species richness by 58% and 33%, respectively. Similarly, areas with low‐vegetation habitats exhibited the highest richness of key taxa, including pollinators and threatened species, and the widest variety of feeding traits. However, these habitats tended to be less protected despite their higher diversity. Our results highlight the value of heterogeneous low vegetation for promoting overall insect biomass and diversity and that better protection of insects requires improved protection and management of unforested areas, where many biodiversity hotspots and key taxa occur. Assessing the extinction risk of species based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List (RL) is key to guiding conservation policies and reducing biodiversity loss. This process is resource demanding, however, and requires continuous updating, which becomes increasingly difficult as new species are added to the RL. Automatic methods, such as comparative analyses used to predict species RL category, can be an efficient alternative to keep assessments up to date. Using amphibians as a study group, we predicted which species are more likely to change their RL category and thus should be prioritized for reassessment. We used species biological traits, environmental variables, and proxies of climate and land‐use change as predictors of RL category. We produced an ensemble prediction of IUCN RL category for each species by combining 4 different model algorithms: cumulative link models, phylogenetic generalized least squares, random forests, and neural networks. By comparing RL categories with the ensemble prediction and accounting for uncertainty among model algorithms, we identified species that should be prioritized for future reassessment based on the mismatch between predicted and observed values. The most important predicting variables across models were species' range size and spatial configuration of the range, biological traits, climate change, and land‐use change. We compared our proposed prioritization index and the predicted RL changes with independent IUCN RL reassessments and found high performance of both the prioritization and the predicted directionality of changes in RL categories. Ensemble modeling of RL category is a promising tool for prioritizing species for reassessment while accounting for models' uncertainty. This approach is broadly applicable to all taxa on the IUCN RL and to regional and national assessments and may improve allocation of the limited human and economic resources available to maintain an up‐to‐date IUCN RL. Globally, marine fish communities are being altered by climate change and human disturbances. We examined data on global marine fish communities to assess changes in community‐weighted mean temperature affinity (i.e., mean temperatures within geographic ranges), maximum length, and trophic levels, which, respectively, represent the physiological, morphological, and trophic characteristics of marine fish communities. Then, we explored the influence of climate change and fishing on these characteristics because of their long‐term role in shaping fish communities, especially their interactive effects. We employed spatial linear mixed models to investigate their impacts on community‐weighted mean trait values and on abundance of different fish lengths and trophic groups. Globally, we observed an initial increasing trend in the temperature affinity of marine fish communities, whereas the weighted mean length and trophic levels of fish communities showed a declining trend. However, these shift trends were not significant, likely due to the large variation in midlatitude communities. Fishing pressure increased fish communities' temperature affinity in regions experiencing climate warming. Furthermore, climate warming was associated with an increase in weighted mean length and trophic levels of fish communities. Low climate baseline temperature appeared to mitigate the effect of climate warming on temperature affinity and trophic levels. The effect of climate warming on the relative abundance of different trophic classes and size classes both exhibited a nonlinear pattern. The small and relatively large fish species may benefit from climate warming, whereas the medium and largest size groups may be disadvantaged. Our results highlight the urgency of establishing stepping‐stone marine protected areas to facilitate the migration of fishes to habitats in a warming ocean. Moreover, reducing human disturbance is crucial to mitigate rapid tropicalization, particularly in vulnerable temperate regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sea‐level rise (SLR) is expected to cause major changes to coastal wetlands, which are among the world's most vulnerable ecosystems and are critical for nonbreeding waterbirds. Because strategies for adaptation to SLR, such as nature‐based solutions and designation of protected areas, can locally reduce the negative effects of coastal flooding under SLR on coastal wetlands, it is crucial to prioritize adaptation efforts, especially for wetlands of international importance for biodiversity. We assessed the exposure of coastal wetlands important for nonbreeding waterbirds to projected SLR along the Mediterranean coasts of 8 countries by modeling future coastal flooding under 7 scenarios of SLR by 2100 (from 44‐ to 161‐cm rise) with a static inundation approach. Exposure to coastal flooding under future SLR was assessed for 938 Mediterranean coastal sites (≤30 km from the coastline) where 145 species of nonbreeding birds were monitored as part of the International Waterbird Census and for which the monitoring area was delineated by a polygon (64.3% of the coastal sites monitored in the Mediterranean region). Thirty‐four percent of sites were threatened by future SLR, even under the most optimistic scenarios. Protected study sites and study sites of international importance for waterbirds were, respectively, 1.5 and 2 times more exposed to SLR than the other sites under the most optimistic scenario. Accordingly, we advocate for the development of a prioritization scheme to be applied to these wetlands for the implementation of strategies for adaptation to SLR to anticipate the effects of coastal flooding. International and national conservation policies almost exclusively focus on conserving species in their historic native ranges, thus excluding species that have been introduced by people and some of those that have extended their ranges on their own accord. Given that many of such migrants are threatened in their native ranges, conservation goals that explicitly exclude these populations may overlook opportunities to prevent extinctions and respond dynamically to rapidly changing environmental and climatic conditions. Focusing on terrestrial mammals, we quantified the number of threatened mammals that have established new populations through assisted migration (i.e., introduction). We devised 4 alternative scenarios for the inclusion of assisted‐migrant populations in mainstream conservation policy with the aim of preventing global species extinctions. We then used spatial prioritization algorithms to simulate how these scenarios could change global spatial conservation priorities. We found that 22% (70 species out of 265) of all identified assisted‐migrant mammals were threatened in their native ranges, mirroring the 25% of all mammals that are threatened. Reassessing global threat statuses by combining native and migrant ranges reduced the threat status of 23 species (∼33% of threatened assisted migrants). Thus, including migrant populations in threat assessments provides a more accurate assessment of actual global extinction risk among species. Spatial prioritization simulations showed that reimagining the role of assisted‐migrant populations in preventing species extinction could increase the importance of overlooked landscapes, particularly in central Australia, Europe, and the southwestern United States. Our results indicated that these various and nonexhaustive ways to consider assisted‐migrant populations, with due consideration of potential conservation conflicts with resident taxa, may provide unprecedented opportunities to prevent species extinctions. Studies on the germination of Caribbean cacti are essential for conservation and ecological restoration programs. We evaluated the seed traits and germination response of Pilosocereus robinii under five temperatures and two light conditions and compared the vigor of the seedlings obtained. Seminal traits showed characteristics of orthodox seeds. Pilosocereus robinii seeds showed positive photoblastism and a range of optimal temperatures below 30°C. In all treatments where germination was suboptimal, the seeds demonstrated high recovery percentages when they were exposed to the optimal temperature. The vigor of the seedlings showed a behavior similar to germination. Our study shows that restoration plans for the species’ populations are viable from seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate and land use/land cover change are expected to influence the stationary nonbreeding distributions of 4 Nearctic–Neotropical migrant bird species experiencing population declines: Cardellina canadensis (Canada Warbler), Setophaga cerulea (Cerulean Warbler), Vermivora chrysoptera (Golden-winged Warbler), and Hylocichla mustelina (Wood Thrush). Understanding how and where these species' distributions shift in response to environmental drivers is critical to inform conservation planning in the Neotropics. For each species, we quantified current (2012 to 2021) and projected future (2050) suitable climatic and land use/land cover conditions as components of stationary nonbreeding distributions. Multi-source occurrence data were used in an ensemble modeling approach with covariates from 3 global coupled climate models (CMCC-ESM2, FIO-ESM-2-0, MIROC-ES2L) and 2 shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP2-RCP4.5, SSP5-RCP8.5) to predict distributions in response to varying climatic and land use/land cover conditions. Our findings suggest that distribution contraction, upslope elevational shifts in suitable conditions, and limited shifts in latitude and longitude will occur in 3 of 4 species. Cardellina canadensis and S. cerulea are expected to experience a moderate distribution contraction (7% to 29% and 19% to 43%, respectively), primarily in response to expected temperature changes. The V. chrysoptera distribution was modeled by sex, and females and males were projected to experience a major distribution contraction (56% to 79% loss in suitable conditions for females, 46% to 65% for males), accompanied by shifts in peak densities to higher elevations with minimal changes in the upper elevation limit. Expected changes in precipitation had the greatest effect on V. chrysoptera. Hylocichla mustelina experienced the smallest distribution change, consistent with the species' flexibility in habitat selection and broader elevational range. We recommend defining priority areas for conservation as those where suitable conditions are expected to remain or arise in the next 25 years. For V. chrysoptera in particular, it is urgent to ensure that mid-elevation forests in Costa Rica and Honduras are adequately managed and protected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extreme climatic events (ECEs) can have profound impacts on individual fitness, affecting survival directly or indirectly. Late winter ECEs may be especially detrimental to fitness due to limited food resources and increased energetic requirements during this time. A polar vortex disruption ECE descended upon the mid-continental United States during February 7–20, 2021 with temperatures as low as −29°C in areas concurrent with ongoing research on Anas platyrhynchos (Mallard) movement ecology and survival in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee, United States spanning winters 2019–2022. Therefore, we opportunistically evaluated the effects of individual characteristics and latitude on daily survival during the ECE. We extended the survival analysis to March to test for lasting effects of the ECE on survival. We tracked 181 Global Positioning System (GPS)-marked A. platyrhynchos during February 2020, 256 in February 2021, and 324 in February 2022. We documented 22 mortalities during the February 2021 ECE (i.e. 9%), but only 6 mortalities during February 2020 (i.e. 2%) and 2022 (i.e. 1%) when conditions were average. February survival (e.g. 28-day survival) during the ECE was 0.908 (85% CI: 0.879–0.937) but was 0.982 (85% CI: 0.973–0.991) during the 2 non-ECE Februaries. The ECE effect on survival was isolated to February and did not affect March survival. Anas platyrhynchos was 5.4 times more likely to die during the ECE in 2021 compared to non-ECE Februaries. Although large-bodied waterfowl appear cold-tolerant and less sensitive to polar vortex disruptions compared to smaller-bodied passerines, direct mortalities can occur if conditions are severe enough and persist, highlighting the need to consider the influence of ECEs on common, seemingly robust species in future global climate change scenarios. The question of how the digital economy responds to ecological issues has gained salience in recent years. So far, though, social scientists have primarily taken interest in the ecological positionings of tech entrepreneurs. Little attention has been paid to the middle-class fraction of 'tech workers' who are responsible for programming, designing, and managing the digital technologies that reconfigure socio-material relations. Based on 52 interviews with data scientists and user experience designers, the article analyzes the ecological habitus of this new professional segment. Four central ecological schemas are identified: (1) managing limited resources, (2) critical techno-optimism, (3) academic concern, and (4) lifestyle struggles. Simultaneously, the article discusses how these four schemas relate to the different forms of capital held by tech workers. This mapping of the ecological habitus of tech workers shows how social relationships with nature are underpinned by class positions. The article thus pursues dual aims, contributing to research on green capitalism as well as to debates on how the middle class relates to climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En este trabajo se presentan los resultados de un estudio basado en la percepción de los jóvenes ante el cambio climático. Para ello se tomó como referencia los contenidos y competencias que figuran en la ficha docente de la asignatura relacionados con la geografía física para futuros docentes de educación primaria. Se realizó una intervención didáctica a un grupo de 79 hombres y mujeres que no cuentan con formación previa relacionada con los conceptos de sostenibilidad y cambio climático. Fue utilizada la metodología de aprendizaje basado en problemas puesta en práctica en tres sesiones de seminarios prácticos en los que se trataron las consecuencias del clima en la salud. Se obtuvo información del aprendizaje a través de un cuestionario elaborado ad hoc, y posteriormente se realizó un análisis de los datos obtenidos de carácter mixto, con un predominio de los datos cuantitativos sobre los cualitativos. Los resultados muestran que la mayor parte de los jóvenes aseguran sentir impotencia y entienden que el mundo sufrirá graves consecuencias causadas por el cambio climático. El 74% identifica la relación existente entre el cambio climático y la salud; y aseguran que son numerosos los factores que influyen en nuestro organismo una vez realizada la experiencia. Estos resultados alertan de la visión pesimista de los estudiantes a la hora de afrontar el cambio climático, proporcionando claves para mejorar su enseñanza, como la necesaria sensibilización y conocimientos relacionados con el medioambiente.

La sociedad contemporánea se enfrenta al desafío de lidiar con el cambio climático y sus consecuencias en los ecosistemas, las dinámicas sociales y la salud mental. En este contexto han surgido estudios sobre la ansiedad generada por las preocupaciones ambientales y el cambio climático, la cual se denomina ecoansiedad. Debe mencionarse que, actualmente, existen cantidades masivas de datos o big data, las cuales han sido recopiladas y procesadas por instituciones fiables. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es comprender los niveles de ecoansiedad, preocupación y estado emocional fomentados por el acceso a cantidades masivas de datos en torno al cambio climático. La metodología utilizada es de carácter cuantitativo; usamos la Escala de ansiedad por el cambio climático de Clayton y Karazsia (2020), complementada con una Escala emocional ante el cambio climático y una Escala de preocupación ante el cambio climático. Los resultados apuntan a niveles bajos de ecoansiedad y a niveles moderados de preocupación y de estados emocionales, mientras que la dimensión de ajuste conductual es la que presenta los resultados más significativos.

El artículo examina los retos a los que se enfrenta la preservación del patrimonio digital de la humanidad en el contexto de una emergencia mundial provocada por el cambio climático. Una parte importante del patrimonio documental creado o transferido a formatos digitales se conserva en e-archivos que utilizan tecnologías y desarrollan prácticas documentales que generan basura tecnológica y producen gases de efecto invernadero (GEI), cuyo rastro se conoce como huella de carbono. Este artículo, sustentado en una investigación cualitativa, expone las variables asociadas a la preservación digital que tienen un impacto sobre el cambio climático. Asimismo, sugiere la noción del e-archivo sustentable, como un sistema de información social y tecnológica, a través del cual se preservan, a largo plazo y de forma responsable con el medioambiente, los documentos digitales que la sociedad considera esenciales para su comprensión en el futuro.

Se identificaron los principales focos de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) en la Cantera Molino 200 mil. Para ello se empleó la metodología propuesta por el Protocolo de Gases de Efecto Invernadero (2001) adaptada a las condiciones de la entidad. Como resultado se identificaron los principales focos de emisión en la Cantera Molino 200 mil que son el uso de combustible y de energía consumida en las operaciones que se desarrollan. Además, se logró establecer la metodología más adecuada para el cálculo de la huella de carbono.

La sequía es uno de los principales eventos asociados al cambio climático que afectan el suministro de agua y la producción de alimentos en diferentes lugares y momentos (espacio-temporales) en los Andes Tropicales Peruanos (ATP). Además, los estudios han evidenciado que la sequía está causando un enorme daño a las esferas sociales, económicas y ambientales. Por ello, la Organización Meteorológica Mundial (OMM) ha publicado un manual de indicadores e índices de sequía con los métodos más representativos utilizados en el mundo para evaluar los eventos de sequía, pero cada índice tiene una ventaja diferente ya que la variable solicitada y el alcance son diferentes. En ese sentido, este estudio tiene como objetivo comparar el Índice Estandarizado de Precipitación (SPI) y el Índice Estandarizado de Evapotranspiración (SPEI) para la sequía agrícola bajo una consideración espacio-temporal en el ATP, Valle del Mantaro. En primer lugar, el SPI se basa en datos de precipitación, distingue efectivamente entre estaciones húmedas y secas. En segundo lugar, el SPEI toma en consideración los cambios de precipitación y temperatura, lo que conduce a una comprensión del calentamiento global. Se aplicó el SPI y el SPEI a seis estaciones meteorológicas diferentes dentro del Valle del Mantaro con datos entre 1990-2021 bajo un enfoque espacio-temporal. Los resultados muestran principalmente que, el 30% revela características de sequía. Además, el SPEI fue capaz de identificar eventos de sequía mayores en un +-3% para todas las estaciones meteorológicas y aplicando el análisis estadístico Kappa de Cohen, se puede evidenciar una concordancia sustancial pero no perfecta con un valor de no concordancia de +-40%. Finalmente, se recomienda continuar analizando las inundaciones y heladas en las últimas décadas con el propósito de comprender claramente el desarrollo climático para una toma de decisiones informada en la gestión del agua y actividades agrícolas.

Este trabajo aborda la incertidumbre, foco central del actual debate epistemológico, en una triple concreción sociológica. En primer lugar, concreción temática: la incertidumbre en el ámbito del cambio climático (CC, en adelante). En segundo lugar, se fija en actores concretos: expertos en ese ámbito. Y tercero: concreta una observación empírica, con entrevistas a expertos españoles en CC. Se asume una perspectiva emic, atenta al habla de los expertos sobre sentido, localización y gestión de la incertidumbre climática. Como recoge la sucesión de los distintos informes del IPCC, la incertidumbre ha sido y es asunto central de reflexión en el estudio del CC. Dado que son los expertos los que la definen, clasifican, miden y comunican al resto de la ciudadanía, su estudio debe pasar necesariamente por la indagación de su peculiar relación con la heterogénea comunidad de los expertos. Tras dar cuenta de la relevancia dada a la incertidumbre en los informes del IPCC, se propone una reconstrucción selectiva del debate sobre la experticia y la incertidumbre, presentando algunos resultados de las indagaciones sobre el tema en España, para centrar después la atención en el análisis de las evidencias aportadas por una investigación cualitativa, concluyendo con los principales resultados alcanzados. Uncertainty is one of the central issues in the current epistemological debate. This paper proposes to approach it within the framework of a triple sociological concretion. First, a thematic concretion: uncertainty in the field of climate change. Second, it focuses on specific actors: experts in the field of climate change. And third, it is based on an empirical sociological observation of qualitative interviews with a significant sample of Spanish climate change experts. Thus, an emic perspective is adopted, paying attention to what the experts say about the meaning, location, and management of uncertainty. Uncertainty has been and continues to be a central topic of reflection in the study of climate change, as shown by the succession of different IPCC reports. Since it is the experts who define, classify, measure, and communicate the uncertainty of climate change to the rest of the citizens, its study must necessarily include the observation of the peculiar relationship with the heterogeneous community of experts. After an account of the importance given to uncertainty in the IPCC reports, it proposes a selective reconstruction of the debate on expertise and uncertainty, presenting some of the results of research on the subject in Spain, to then focus attention on the analysis of the evidence provided by recent qualitative research, and to end with some conclusions that identify the main results obtained.

To analyze the different impacts of climate change and due to the high uncertainty regarding future climate conditions, it is advisable to work with scenarios, which are coherent and consistent descriptions of how the Earth's climate system can change in the future. The goal of this study is to predict the yields of soybean planted in Ferrallitic Red soil in the Alquízar region under the SSP2-4.5 climate change scenario of the Hadgem3, Mpi-esm1 and Mri-esm2 models with the use of the AquaCrop simulation model. To select the hydrological years, a study of a series of 28 years (2023-2050) was carried out for the period November-April (crop development period) for each model. The possibility of achieving potential yields between 2,72 and 3,27 t ha-1 and an agronomic water productivity that varies between 0,78-0,91 kg m-3 is evident in soybeans, if the crop is not subjected to any type of limitation except plant genetics, solar radiation, temperature, and rainfall is sufficient in this dry period. The highest average yields were simulated by the HadGEM3 model with 3,27 t ha-1. If irrigation is applied only to guarantee soybean germination, reductions with respect to potential yield are estimated between 14-95%. The comparative study of yields in the SSP2-4.5 climate change scenario in the different models demonstrates the influence of these conditions on the crop response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing effects of climate change on global food systems call for wellthought-out legal actions. The study investigates the interplay between climate change, legal frameworks, and sustainable food production, emphasizing how laws can facilitate or obstruct sustainability objectives. It begins by addressing the challenges that climate change imposes on food cultivation, distribution, and security, underscoring the vulnerability of agricultural sectors to climatic fluctuations and the ensuing risks to food availability and accessibility, which are crucial to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research proceeds with a comprehensive evaluation of existing global, national, and local legal mechanisms and policies, assessing their effectiveness in promoting sustainable practices and mitigating climate impacts. A critical component of this analysis is identifying deficiencies within legal frameworks that hinder the achievement of SDG objectives related to sustainable agricultural practices and climate initiatives. The paper examines aligning food-related laws with environmental sustainability principles and proposes amendments to current regulations and new policy recommendations for improved outcomes. Anthropogenic climate change significantly impacts ecosystem health, biodiversity, and the life cycle and distribution of aquatic macrophytes. Mexican aquatic habitats for macrophytes are particularly vulnerable, with their degradation posing severe ecological risks for freshwater, wetland, and terrestrial ecosystems. This study analyzed the current and future distributions of Sagittaria latifolia and S. macrophylla, two crucial aquatic plant species in Mexico. Species distribution models (SDM) were used, incorporating bioclimatic and topographic variables, with projections for 2041–2060 and 2061–2080 using three Global Circulation Models. Niche overlap was also assessed. The Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt emerged as a significant region for both species. We observed substantial variability among climate models. For S. latifolia, gains ranged from 1.708% (CNRM-CM6-1 model) to 74.806% (HadGEM3-GC31-LL model) for 2041–2060, while the highest loss was 44.11% (MPI-ESM1-2-HR model). Similarly, S. macrophylla showed gains up to 73.591% (MPI-ESM1-2-HR) and losses up to 19.734% (CNRM-CM6-1). These results highlight species-specific responses to future climate scenarios. Niche overlap analyses revealed that both species currently share up to 41% of their niches, with this overlap likely to continue in the future. This study provides insights into the potential impacts of climate change on species distributions, informing conservation and management strategies. Given S. latifolia’s native status and S. macrophylla’s endemic and threatened nature, understanding their distribution dynamics is crucial for conservation efforts. The exploitation of Adivasis, by capitalist forces in Wayanad, Kerala, India is a complex issue that has been ongoing for years. Adivasis in Wayanad have faced bonded slavery, been displaced from their lands, faced loss of resources, and other forms of exploitation, often driven by the interests of organisations seeking to profit from the area's natural resources. This has resulted in the loss of traditional livelihoods, cultural practices, and community structures for the Adivasis, as well as environment al degradation. This research traces this capitalist exploitation and landlessness among the Adivasis through the lens of the novel Valli, originally published in Malayalam by Sheela Tomy and translated into English by Jayasree Kalathil. The study is based on a close reading and analysis of the text and its depiction of the Adivasi community and the challenges they have faced in the context of capitalist development and resource extraction in the post independent Wayanad. This article examines the progress of the warnings and agreements of the last 50 years, to address global environmental changes whose trend is towards a planetary disaster. Using environmental health indicators, global changes are recognized as an altered state of the environment and axis both to analyze the driving forces and pressures that have caused it, as well as the effects on public health produced by exposure to such changes, analyzing trends by continent in the last decade. The result obtained is the confirmation that, despite the agreements of 50 years ago, the driving forces and pressures identified as the causes of global environmental changes have not been modified; and with respect to the effects, it is confirmed that those who are contributing the least to these planetary pressures are the most exposed and affected. Uncertainty is one of the central issues in the current epistemological debate. This paper proposes to approach it within the framework of a triple sociological concretion. First, a thematic concretion: uncertainty in the field of climate change. Second, it focuses on specific actors: experts in the field of climate change. And third, it is based on an empirical sociological observation of qualitative interviews with a significant sample of Spanish climate change experts. Thus, an emic perspective is adopted, paying attention to what the experts say about the meaning, location, and management of uncertainty. Uncertainty has been and continues to be a central topic of reflection in the study of climate change, as shown by the succession of different IPCC reports. Since it is the experts who define, classify, measure, and communicate the uncertainty of climate change to the rest of the citizens, its study must necessarily include the observation of the peculiar relationship with the heterogeneous community of experts. This paper reviews the process of adapting the Carbon Literacy for Museums Toolkit to develop a course specifically for the archive sector, Carbon Literacy for Archives, Records and Special Collections. This toolkit was launched to the sector in spring 2024. It discusses why carbon literacy (CL) is important, covering the benefits, co-benefits and what CL is. It examines the impact of carbon literacy training (CLT) on greenhouse gas emission and energy use reduction, and why CLT is so effective in generating the transformational behavioural change that is needed to create a sustainable future. Sociological debates on the mobilising force of imagined futures are particularly relevant in our present context of climate emergency, where the claim-making of a 'threatened future' has come to the fore in civic mobilisations worldwide. This article addresses these debates by empirically examining how adverse views of the future underpinning present thematisations of climate change as an emergency shape collective action. Based upon qualitative research conducted in Barcelona on new climate movements, I analyse the content and form of two imagined futures ('catastrophe' and 'collapse') that emerge from the ways in which participants of Extinction Rebellion and Fridays for Future engage with the future and climate. This analysis shows how these imagined futures are reflected in individual imaginations and processed by these movements, infusing different forms of agency and impacting trajectories of action in the present. This empirically grounded focus on imagined climate futures reveals that not only are cognitions of climate risks crucial, but so are the emotions that these produce in configuring collective action. Likewise, this study highlights how even disastrous imagined climate futures include utopian impulses for sustainable futures as both a driver and result of collective action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecological crisis, massive inequality and war: our world is at a dangerous tipping point. Yet the present global crisis defies simple description and is difficult to explain. To clarify, it is argued that the character of the world crisis today is triple: ecological, economic and political. Underlying all three dimensions is the capitalist form of world society. The consolidation of this capitalist form was accompanied by the emergence of the concept of development within liberal philosophy. During the 20th century, development came to define geographical regions and legitimate capitalist political economy on a world scale. Capitalism came to be taken as development: I call this 'capitalism qua development'. Because of the triple crisis, capitalism qua development is beginning to undergo a profound change. In an era of rapid global heating and ecological crisis, the tie between capital and development is straining and likely to give way. Capital is becoming more closely attached to the concept of adaptation. I argue that, in the most likely scenario ('Climate Leviathan'), capitalism qua development will be recast as adaptation. Some signs of this shift are already apparent. Since this is only a likely prospect, three other possibilities – fates of the concept and practice of development – are proposed.
