Our objective was to evaluate, under field conditions, the dynamics of decomposition of crop residues under a pear orchard in Brazil. Residues of oat, oilseed radish, ryegrass and spontaneous vegetation were placed in litter bags and deposited between pear rows. After 0, 21, 36, 56 and 136 days, dry matter, carbon, lignin, cellulose, non-structural components, and nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) were determined. Spontaneous vegetation residues had the longest half residence time compared to the introduced cover crops, while oat residues presented faster dry-matter decomposition rates (2-3 fold higher). Oilseed radish and ryegrass showed the highest final remaining dry matter (26-36%), and the largest nutrients release. Oilseed radish and ryegrass residues released 85 kg N ha-1, 67 kg P ha-1, 48 kg K ha-1, 16 kg Ca ha-1, and 9 kg Mg ha-1. The rate and pattern of symbiotic fixation and N credit by white lupine as affected by soil tillage, and yellow lupine affected by soil amendment with eucalyptus harvest residues were evaluated; also, fixed N transferred from yellow lupine to the intercropped eucalyptus was assessed. Lupine species growing in sandy soils with low nutrient status fixed >94% N2with the indigenous soil rhizobium,in two sites (Pegões, Óbidos). Soil disturbance and harvest residues incorporation did not affect the fixing capacity of both lupines. Positive N inputs (>+69 kg N ha-1) were estimated for both lupines, which is relevant in a rotation or association with non-legume crops. Nitrogen concentration in newly-planted eucalyptus was 23% lower in harvest residues amended soil and 36% greater by the addition of mineral-15N compared with organic fertilization (yellow lupine). Mineral-N use efficiency by eucalyptus seedlings was low (4%) which may be associated with the small root development (shoot:root ratio=4.3). Organically fertilized trees showed15N enrichment thirteen times smaller than mineral-15N fertilized trees., Grain legumes are grown worldwide and cultivated primarily for their grains which are harvested at maturity and marketed as fresh or dry products, rich in proteins for human consumption and animal feeding. However, their cultivation has been neglected for many years in the European Union (EU), which only produces about five million tonnes, especially peas (3 Mt), fababeans (1.2 Mt) and soybeans (0.8 Mt), and imports two-thirds of protein required for feed uses (Créponet al., 2004). Grain legumes are expected to increase the eco-efficiency of agricultural production due to their ability to produce proteins of high quality without using nitrogen (N) fertilisers (Gaillard and Nemecek, 2004). In this way, it is supposed that energy use by grain legumes and N losses (nitrate, ammonia, etc.) are much lower than in non-legume crops. The current European Common Agricultural Policy favours the introduction of grain legumes in crop rotations where they are economically beneficial for farmers in several regions by their value to the next crop, but no specific financial support has been decided yet.

The present study aimed to monitor the rhizobial population present in four “montado“ ecosystems from two different locations, Vaiamonte and Estremoz in the South of Portugal, with natural and sown pastures. The influence of tree canopy ofQuercus suberwas evaluated in relation to rhizobial population abundance, symbiotic effectiveness and genetic diversity. Results showed that the size of natural rhizobial population in the two older improved pastures analyzed, having more than 30 and 12 years, had the highest values outside the influence of cork tree canopy. However, under the canopy, the population size in these two improved pastures decreased. Also, rhizobial abundance in the youngest sown pastures (>5-years-old) had high values, either beneath the tree canopy or outside its influence. Concerning the effectiveness of symbiotic fixation, results revealed the existence of N2 fixing strains in the four pastures, the highest values being observed in the youngest improved pasture and under the tree canopy. A high genetic diversity of rhizobial population was also found in all pastures, especially outside the influence of the tree canopy., O presente trabalho teve como objetivo a monitorização das populações rizobianas existentes em solos com pastagens naturais e semeadas, em quatro ecossistemas “montado”, de duas diferentes zonas, Vaiamonte e Estremoz, no Sul de Portugal. Foi avaliada a influência da copa das árvores deQuercus suber, na dimensão, eficácia simbiótica e diversidade genética destas populações. Verificou-se que a influência da copa das árvores, nas duas pastagens semeadas mais antigas (há mais de 30 e de 12 anos), teve um efeito negativo na dimensão da população rizobiana do solo, com valores mais elevados fora da influência da copa dos sobreiros. A abundância da população rizobiana nas pastagens mais jovens foi também muito elevada tanto fora como debaixo da copa das árvores. Relativamente à eficácia da fixação de azoto (N), os resultados revelaram a existência de estirpes fixadoras de N nas quatro pastagens. Os valores mais elevados foram obtidos na pastagem mais jovem, semeada há mais de 5 anos, em especial debaixo da copa das árvores. Verificou-se também que a diversidade genética das populações rizobianas nas várias pastagens foi elevada, principalmente fora da influência da copa das árvores.

The “newly fixed” NH4+in clay minerals should be considered for an efficient management of plant nutrition. In a clay-loam soil cultivated in 2012 with rice under intermittent flooding and conventional agronomic practices, the dynamics of pH, N-inorganic and non-exchangeable NH4+was evaluatedi)under field conditions, air temperature and atmospheric [CO2] (375 µmol mol-1air) in Salvaterra de Magos (Portugal), andii)under elevated temperature and temperature+[CO2] in controlled microclimate. For that, open-top chambers were used to simulate the conditions of an increased mean air temperature (2-3 °C), alone or combined with increased [CO2] (550 µmol mol-1air). Non-exchangeable NH4+was significantly higher under open-field conditions compared with the temperature elevation, with or without elevated atmospheric [CO2]. Temperature elevation reduced the “fixation” rate of the cation, while the CO2concentration rise did not affect particularly the non-exchangeable form. Further studies are required for consolidation of these findings together with microbial communities and dynamics of C and N in soil., O NH4+recém-“fixado” nos minerais argilosos deve ser considerado numa gestão eficiente da nutrição vegetal. Num solo argilo-limoso, localizado em Salvaterra de Magos (Portugal), cultivado em 2012 com arroz, sob alagamento intermitente e práticas agronómicas convencionais, avaliou-se a dinâmica do pH, N-inorgânico e NH4+não-trocáveli)em condições de campo, de temperatura do ar e [CO2] atmosférico (375 µmol mol-1), -, e deii)aumento da temperatura e temperatura+[CO2] em microclima controlado. Foram utilizadas câmaras de topo aberto para simulação do aumento da temperatura média do ar (2-3 ºC), apenas ou combinado com aumento da [CO2] (550 µmol mol-1). Os resultados mostraram que o NH4+“fixado” foi superior em condições de campo, em comparação com a elevação da temperatura, com ou sem elevação da [CO2]. A elevação da temperatura reduziu a taxa de “fixação” do catião, enquanto o aumento da [CO2] não afectou o NH4+“fixado”. Mais estudos são necessários para a consolidação destes resultados, bem como da dinâmica do C, N e população microbiana no solo.

Mestrado em Engenharia Agronómica - Instituto Superior de Agronomia - UL O fósforo (P) é um nutriente essencial ao crescimento das espécies pratenses e forrageiras sendo também necessário à bactéria rizobiana para obtenção de energia para a captura do N2 durante o processo simbiótico. Para avaliar o efeito do fertilizante fosfatado nas leguminosas de pastagens melhoradas realizou-se um ensaio em vasos (64) com blocos completamente casualizados e quatro repetições, com um tratamento fatorial com quatro níveis de P (P0 = 0, P1 = 30, P2 = 60 e P3 = 90 kg P ha-1) e três espécies pratenses (Lolium multiflorum L. (azevém anual), Trifolium subterraneum L. (trevo subterrâneo) e Ornithopus sativus Brot. (serradela rosa)), cultivadas como culturas estremes e em consociação. Para a avaliação da capacidade de fixação simbiótica das leguminosas recorreu-se ao método da diluição isotópica do marcador 15N. Observaram-se idênticas concentrações de P na parte aérea e na raiz das leguminosas em monocultura, mas os nódulos apresentam teores mais elevados. A dose de 60 kg P ha-1 aumentou a produção de biomassa aérea, radicular e de nódulos e favoreceu a fixação do N2. Aparentemente é a dose adequada para aplicar nas pastagens melhoradas de sequeiro, instaladas em solos ácidos e pobres em P. N/A
