The properties of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are determined by the electrochemical and kinetic properties of their constituent materials as well as by their underlying microstructure. Microstructural design can be leveraged to achieve a leap in performance and durability. Here we investigate a porous electrode structure, as a strategy to increase the surface area, and provide structural stability for Li-metal anodes. The porous architecture consists of a mixed electron/ion conductor that function as a scaffold for lithium metal deposition. A new finite element model was developed to simulate the large topological changes associated with Li plating/stripping. This model is used to predict the current density distribution as a function of material and structural properties. A dimensionless quantity that combines Li-ion conductivity, surface impedance and average pore size is shown to be a good indicator to predict the peak current density. Preventing current localization at the separator reduces the risk of cell shorting. The analyses show that the peak current scales as $(hG)^{1/2}$, where $h$ is the ratio between surface and bulk conductivity and $G$ is the average pore size. Stability analyses suggest that the growth is morphologically stable, and that confining Li-plating into pores can enable high-energy density solid-state batteries. In addition to optimizing porous electrodes design, this finite element method can be extended to studying other Li-battery structures.

Zinc phosphide, Zn3P2, nanowires constitute prospective building blocks for next generation solar cells due to the combination of suitable optoelectronic properties and an abundance of the constituting elements in the Earths crust. The generation of periodic superstructures along the nanowire axis could provide an additional mechanism to tune their functional properties. Here we present the vapour-liquid-solid growth of zinc phosphide superlattices driven by periodic heterotwins. This uncommon planar defect involves the exchange of Zn by In at the twinning boundary. We find that the zigzag superlattice formation is driven by reduction of the total surface energy of the liquid droplet. The chemical variation across the heterotwin does not affect the homogeneity of the optical proerties, as measured by cathodoluminescence. The basic understanding provided here brings new perspectives on the use of II-V semiconductors in nanowire technology.

Solid electrolytes are considered a potentially enabling component in rechargeable batteries that use lithium metal as the negative electrode, and thereby can safely access higher energy density than available with today's lithium ion batteries. To do so, the solid electrolyte must be able to suppress morphological instabilities that lead to poor coulombic efficiency and, in the worst case, internal short circuits. In this work, lithium electrodeposition experiments were performed using single-crystal Li6La3ZrTaO12 garnet as solid electrolyte layers to investigate the factors that determine whether lithium penetration occurs through brittle inorganic solid electrolytes. In these single crystals, grain boundaries are excluded as possible paths for lithium metal propagation. However, Vickers microindentation was used to introduce sharp surface flaws of known size. Using operando optical microscopy, it was found that lithium metal penetration sometimes initiates at these controlled surface defects, and when multiple indents of varying size were present, propagates preferentially from the largest defect. However, a second class of flaws was found to be equally or more important. At the perimeter of surface current collectors, an enhanced electrodeposition current density causes lithium metal filled cracks to initiate and grow to penetration, even when the large Vickers defects are in close proximity. Modeling the electric field concentration for the experimental configurations, it was shown that a factor of 5 enhancement in field can readily occur within 10 micrometers of current collector discontinuities, which we interpret as the origin of electrochemomechanical stresses leading to failure. Such field amplification may determine the sites where supercritical surface defects dominate lithium metal propagation during electrodeposition, overriding the presence of larger defects elsewhere., Comment: 32 pages

Grain boundary migration is driven by the boundary's curvature and external loads such as temperature and stress. In intercalation electrodes an additional driving force results from Li-diffusion. That is, Li-intercalation induces volume expansion of the host-electrode, which is stored as elastic energy in the system. This stored energy is hypothesized as an additional driving force for grain boundaries and edge dislocations. Here, we apply the 2D Cahn-Hilliard$-$phase-field-crystal (CH-PFC) model to investigate the coupled interactions between highly mobile Li-ions and host-electrode lattice structure, during an electrochemical cycle. We use a polycrystalline FePO$_{4}$/ LiFePO$_{4}$ electrode particle as a model system. We compute grain growth in the FePO$_{4}$ electrode in two parallel studies: In the first study, we electrochemically cycle the electrode and calculate Li-diffusion assisted grain growth. In the second study, we do not cycle the electrode and calculate the curvature-driven grain growth. External loads, such as temperature and stress, did not differ across studies. We find the mean grain-size increases by $\sim11\%$ in the electrochemically cycled electrode particle. By contrast, in the absence of electrochemical cycling, we find the mean grain-size increases by $\sim2\%$ in the electrode particle. These CH-PFC computations suggest that Li-intercalation accelerates grain-boundary migration in the host-electrode particle. During phase transitions certain properties of a material change, such as composition field and lattice-symmetry distortions. These changes are typically coupled, and affect the microstructures that form in materials. Here, we propose a 2D theoretical framework that couples a Cahn-Hilliard (CH) model describing the composition field of a material system, with a phase field crystal (PFC) model describing its underlying microscopic configurations. We couple the two continuum models via coordinate transformation coefficients. We introduce the transformation coefficients in the PFC method, to describe affine lattice deformations. These transformation coefficients are modeled as functions of the composition field. Using this coupled approach, we explore the effects of coarse-grained lattice symmetry and distortions on a phase transition process. In this paper, we demonstrate the working of the CH-PFC model through three representative examples: First, we describe base cases with hexagonal and square lattice symmetries for two composition fields. Next, we illustrate how the CH-PFC method interpolates lattice symmetry across a diffuse composition phase boundary. Finally, we compute a Cahn-Hilliard type of diffusion and model the accompanying changes to lattice symmetry during a phase transition process., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

This is the first quantitative analysis of mechanical reliability of all-solid state batteries. Mechanical degradation of the solid electrolyte (SE) is caused by intercalation-induced expansion of the electrode particles, within the constrain of a dense microstructure. A coupled electro-chemo-mechanical model was implemented to quantify the material properties that cause a SE to fracture. The treatment of microstructural details is essential to the understanding of stress-localization phenomena and fracture. A cohesive zone model is employed to simulate the evolution of damage. In the numerical tests, fracture is prevented only if electrode-particle's expansion is lower than 7.5% and the solid-electrolyte's fracture energy higher than $G_c = 4$ J m$^{-2}$. Perhaps counter-intuitively, the analyses show that compliant solid electrolytes (with Young's modulus in the order of E$_{SE} = 15$ GPa) are more prone to micro-cracking. This result, captured by our non-linear kinematics model, contradicts the speculations that sulfide SEs are more suitable for the design of bulk-type batteries than oxide SEs. Mechanical degradation is linked to the battery power-density. Fracture in solid Li-ion conductors represents a barrier for Li transport, and accelerates the decay of rate performance.

A diffuse-interface model for microstructure with an arbitrary number of components and phases was developed from basic thermodynamic and kinetic principles and formalized within a variational framework. The model includes a composition gradient energy to capture solute trapping, and is therefore suited for studying phenomena where the width of the interface plays an important role. Derivation of the inhomogeneous free energy functional from a Taylor expansion of homogeneous free energy reveals how the interfacial properties of each component and phase may be specified under a mass constraint. A diffusion potential for components was defined away from the dilute solution limit, and a multi-obstacle barrier function was used to constrain phase fractions. The model was used to simulate solidification via nucleation, premelting at phase boundaries and triple junctions, the intrinsic instability of small particles, and solutal melting resulting from differing diffusivities in solid and liquid. The shape of metastable free energy surfaces is found to play an important role in microstructure evolution and may explain why some systems premelt at phase boundaries and phase triple junctions while others do not., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We propose a two dimensional frame-invariant phase field model of grain impingement and coarsening. One dimensional analytical solutions for a stable grain boundary in a bicrystal are obtained, and equilibrium energies are computed. We are able to calculate the rotation rate for a free grain between two grains of fixed orientation. For a particular choice of functional dependencies in the model the grain boundary energy takes the same analytic form as the microscopic (dislocation) model of Read and Shockley., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures
