We propose an approach to the fabrication of one-dimensional nanostructures, based on the design of a pattern of channels onto a semiconductor surface. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated by means of ab initio and empirical electronic structure calculations. When the channel diameter is sufficiently larger than the interstitial space, the resulting pillars constitute an ordered array of electronically independent, though mechanically connected nanowires. In the opposite regime a tunable metamaterial results. The proposed method provides a path to the realization of uniform quantum wires-both in size and doping characteristics-while easing electrical contacting.

Debido al gran número de transistores por mm2 que hoy en día podemos encontrar en las GPU convencionales, en los últimos años éstas se vienen utilizando para propósitos generales gracias a que ofrecen un mayor rendimiento para computación paralela. Este proyecto implementa el producto sparse matrix-vector sobre OpenCL. En los primeros capítulos hacemos una revisión de la base teórica necesaria para comprender el problema. Después veremos los fundamentos de OpenCL y del hardware sobre el que se ejecutarán las librerías desarrolladas. En el siguiente capítulo seguiremos con una descripción del código de los kernels y de su flujo de datos. Finalmente, el software es evaluado basándose en comparativas con la CPU. Degut al gran nombre de transistors per mm2 que avui en dia podem trobar a les GPU convencionals, en els darrers anys es venen utilitzant per a propòsits generals degut a que ofereixen un major rendiment per a la computació paral·lela. Aquest projecte implementa el producte sparse matrix-vector a sobre OpenCL. Als primers capítols fem una revisió de la base teòrica necessària per a comprendre el problema. Després veurem els fonaments d'OpenCL y del hardware a sobre el que s'executarà les llibreries desenvolupades. Al següent capítol seguirem amb una descripció del codi dels dos kernels i el seu flux de dades. Finalment, el software és avaluat en base a comparatives amb la CPU. Due to the large number of transistors per mm2 that today we can find in conventional GPU, in recent years it have been used for general purpose since they offer higher performance for data parallel computations. This project implements the product sparse matrix-vector on OpenCL. In the first chapter we review the theoretical basis necessary to understand the problem. Then we will see the foundations of OpenCL and hardware on which to run the developed software. In the next chapter will continue with a description of the kernel code and its data flow. Finally, the software is evaluated based on comparisons with the CPU.

3D interconnected nanowire scaffoldings are shown to increase the thermoelectric efficiency in comparison to similar diameter 1D nanowires and films grown under similar electrodeposition conditions. BiTe 3D nanonetworks offer a reduction in thermal conductivity (κ) while preserving the high electrical conductivity of the films. The reduction in κ is modeled using the hydrodynamic heat transport equation, and it can be understood as a heat viscosity effect due to the 3D nanostructuration. In addition, the Seebeck coefficient is twice that of nanowires and films, and up to 50% higher than in a single crystal. This increase is interpreted as a nonequilibrium effect that the geometry of the structure induces on the distribution function of the phonons, producing an enhanced phonon drag. These thermoelectric metamaterials have higher performance and are fabricated with large areas by a cost-effective method, which makes them suitable for up-scale production.

The controlled switching between two quasistable Néel states in adsorbed antiferromagnetic Fe chains has recently been achieved by Loth et al. using tunneling electrons from an STM tip. In order to rationalize their data, we evaluate the rate of tunneling electron-induced switching between the Néel states. Good agreement is found with the experiment, permitting us to identify three switching mechanisms: (i) low STM voltage direct electron-induced transitions, (ii) intermediate STM voltage switching via spin-wave-like excitation, and (iii) high STM voltage transitions mediated by domain-wall formation. Spin correlations in the antiferromagnetic chains are the switching driving force, leading to a marked chain-size dependence. © 2013 American Physical Society., M.Y. and X. The possibility that an adsorbed molecule could provide shallow electronic states that could be thermally excited has received less attention than substitutional impurities and could potentially have a high impact in the doping of silicon nanowires (SiNWs). We show that molecular-based ex-situ doping, where NH₃ is adsorbed at the sidewall of the SiNW, can be an alternative path to n-type doping. By means of first-principle electronic structure calculations, we show that NH₃ is a shallow donor regardless of the growth orientation of the SiNWs. Also, we discuss quantum confinement and its relation with the depth of the NH₃ doping state, showing that the widening of the bandgap makes the molecular donor level deeper, thus more difficult to activate.

We have studied the high-frequency behavior and the ultimate limiting factor to the cutoff frequency for the Datta–Das spin transistor using device Monte Carlo simulations. We have found that the maximum frequency of operation is not related to intrinsic parameters to the spin of the carriers, such as the Larmor frequency or the spin lifetime, but to the transit time through the channel.

We calculate and model the microscopic dielectric response function for quantum dots using first principle methods. We find that the response is bulklike inside the quantum dots, and the reduction of the macroscopic dielectric constants is a surface effect. We present a model for the microscopic dielectric function which reproduces well the directly calculated results and can be used to solve the Poisson equation in a nanosystem.

We present a device concept for a spintronic transistor based on the spin relaxation properties a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The device design is very similar to that of the Datta and Das spin transistor. However, our proposed device works in the diffusive regime rather than in the ballistic regime. This eases lithographical and processing requirements. The switching action is achieved through the biasing of a gate contact, which controls the lifetime of spins injected into the 2DEG from a ferromagnetic emitter, thus allowing the traveling spins to be either aligned with a ferromagnetic collector or randomizing them before collection. The device configuration can easily be turned into a memory and a readout head for magnetically stored information.

We propose a mechanism for achieving bidirectional spin pumping in conventional nonmagnetic semiconductor resonant tunneling heterostructures under zero magnetic field. The device is designed specifically to take advantage of the special spin configuration described by the Rashba effect in asymmetric quantum wells. It induces the simultaneous flow of oppositely spin-polarized current components in opposite directions through spin-dependent resonant tunneling, and can thus generate significant levels of spin current with very little net electrical current across the tunnel structure, a condition characterized by a greater-than-unity current spin polarization. We also present modeling results on temperature dependence and finite device size effects.

We propose an InAs/GaSb/AlSb-based asymmetric resonant interband tunneling diode as a spin filter. The interband design exploits large valence band spin–orbit interaction to provide strong spin selectivity, without suffering from fast hole spin relaxation. Spin filtering efficiency is also enhanced by the reduction of tunneling through quasibound states near the zone center, where spin spitting vanishes and spin selectivity is difficult. Our calculations show that, when coupled with an emitter or collector capable of lateral momentum selectivity, the asymmetric resonant interband tunneling diode can achieve significant spin filtering in conventional nonmagnetic semiconductor heterostructures under zero magnetic field.

Discrete changes of conductance of the order of G0 = 2e2/h reported during the unipolar reset transitions of Pt/HfO2/Pt structures are interpreted as the signature of atomic-size variations of the conducting filament (CF) nanostructure. Our results suggest that the reset occurs in two phases: a progressive narrowing of the CF to the limit of a quantum wire (QW) followed by the opening of a spatial gap that exponentially reduces the CF transmission. First principles calculations show that oxygen vacancy paths in HfO2 with single- to few-atom diameters behave as QWs and are capable of carrying current with G0 conductance.

A la present tesi s’han estudiat propietats de transport electrònic en unions laterals metall-semiconductor de MoS2, utilizant funcions de Green de no equilibri, destinades a contactar canals 2D en transistors. Els resultats obtinguts han contribuït a comprendre l’electrostàtica en unions 2D. A més a més, l’avaluació de diferents geometries de la interfície metall-semiconductor ha permès predir les condicions que proporcionen millors propietats de contacte. Aquests estudis han donat lloc al desenvolupament d’un nou procediment per determinar els règims d’emissió en unions 2D metall-semiconductor, experimentalment o teòrica. D’altra banda, també s’han estudiat dispositius RRAM basats en HfO2 per mitjà de simulacions de dinàmica molecular, implementant un mètode d’equilibratge de càrrega que permet descriure l’efecte d’un camp elèctric extern, amb la qual cosa s’ha pogut caracteritzar el procés de “forming”, “reset” i “set”. Mitjançant l’anàlisi de la migració d’ions d’oxigen i el canvi en la coordinació dels àtoms de Hf en el dielèctric s’ha pogut descriure la formació i dissolució de filaments conductors durant el funcionament del dispositiu amb un nivell de detall sense precedents. Aquests estudis han estat complementats amb càlculs DFT d’energies de formació i barreres d’activació corresponents a la migració de vacàncies d’oxigen sota l’efecte d’un camp elèctric extern. Per tal d’obtenir aquests resultats, s’ha proposat un nou esquema amb el qual és possible realitzar càlculs DFT en materials 2D, introduint càrrega neta i un camp extern. Finalment, el fenomen de “Resistive swithching” en cel·les RRAM basades en MoS2 amb electrodes d’or s’ha estudiat per mitjà de càlculs de transport usant primers principis, amb l’objectiu de dilucidar les estructures responsables dels estats d’alta i baixa resistivitat. En la presente tesis se estudiaron propiedades de transporte electrónico en uniones laterales metal-semiconductor de MoS2, usando funciones de Green de no equilibrio, destinadas a contactar canales 2D en transistores. Estos estudios dieron lugar al desarrollo de un nuevo procedimiento para determinar los regímenes de emisión en uniones 2D metal-semiconductoras, experimental o teóricamente. Por otro lado, también se estudiaron dispositivos RRAM basados en HfO2 por medio de simulaciones de dinámica molecular, implementando un método de equilibración de carga que permite describir el efecto de un campo eléctrico externo, con lo cual se pudo caracterizar el proceso de "orming", "reset" y "set". A través del análisis de la migración de iones de oxígeno y el cambio en la coordinación de los átomos de Hf en el dieléctrico se pudo describir la formación y disolución de filamentos conductores durante el funcionamiento del dispositivo con un nivel de detalle sin precedentes. Estos estudios fueron complementados con cálculos de DFT de energías de formación y barreras de activación correspondientes a la migración de vacancias de oxígeno bajo el efecto de un campo eléctrico externo. Para obtener estos resultados, se propuso un novedoso esquema con el que es posible realizar cálculos DFT en materiales 2D, introduciendo carga neta y un campo externo. Finalmente, el fenómeno de "resistive swithching" en celdas RRAM basadas en MoS2 con electrodos de oro se estudió por medio de cálculos de transporte usando primeros principios, con el objetivo de dilucidar las estructuras responsables de los estados de alta y baja resistividad. In this theis, finite bias transport properties of 2D MoS2 lateral metal-semiconductor junctions were studied through non-equilibrium Green's functions calculations, aimed at contacting the 2D channel in a field effect transistor. The obtained results contributed to the understanding of the electrostatics in 2D junctions. Besides, the evaluation of different interface geometries allowed to predict the conditions that provide better contacting properties. From these studies, we contributed with an improved procedure to determine, experimentally or theoretically, emission regimes in 2D metal-semiconducting junctions. Also, HfO 2 -based RRAM cells were studied using MD simulations with an extended charge equilibration method to describe external electric fields, which allowed to characterize the forming, reset and set processes. The analysis of the migration of oxygen ions and the change in the coordination of Hf atoms in the dielectric was used to describe the formation and dissolution of conductive filaments during the operation of the device with unprecedented detail. These studies were completed with DFT calculations of formation energies and activation barriers for the migration of oxygen vacancies, also obtained under the effect of an external electric field. In order to achieve such purpose, a novel scheme to perform calculations of slabs including a net charge and an electric field was proposed. Finally, resistive switching phenomena in MoS 2 monolayers sandwiched between Au electrodes was studied through DFT transport calculations, with the intent to elucidate the structure responsable for the high and low resistance states. Durant la darrera dècada, la popularització del grafè i altres materials de dues dimensions (2D) ha revolucionat la ciència de materials. Els nous fenòmens físics que esdevenen en aquests nous materials obren les possibilitats per a nous dispositius amb característiques extraordinàries. En el camp de l’electrònica d’alta freqüència, per alguns d'aquests dispositius s'ha predit que poden obrir el forat que hi ha actualment en el rang del terahertz. En aquesta tesis s'han fet servir diferents tècniques de simulació per estudiar diferents dispositius en l'entorn d'alta freqüència en ment. En primer lloc, un transistor d'efecte de camp compost per una mono capa de disulfit de molibdè (MoS$_2$) ha estat estudiat fent servir el model de deriva difusió. Per aprofundir en això, s'ha estudiat també una unió $p-n$ amb aquest mateix material. Malgrat que el model de deriva difusió està pensat per materials convencionals, s'ha fet servir un conjunt de paràmetres efectius per tal de reproduir les dades experimentals. Amb aquest conjunt de paràmetres, ha estat possible reproduir el corrent de sortida d'aquest transistor tot i que no el període de transició. D’altra banda, els resultats de la unió $p-n$ han estat molt valuosos per a l'estudi de la zona de depleció. Un dels obstacles a superar per poder poder utilitzar grafè i altres materials 2D en aplicacions d'alta freqüència, per tal de no comprometre el rendiment d'aquests dispositius, és el d'obtenir una resistència de contact (R$_c$) prou baixa. En aquesta tesi, s'ha proposat d'afegir una capa intermèdia de grafit entre el contacte metàl·lic i el canal de grafè per tal de reduir la resistència de contacte per sota dels 100 $\Omega\cdot\mu$m que sovint es cita com el límit del qual pot limitar el rendiment dels transistors d'efecte de camp. Un contacte de tipus ``top'' s'ha fet servir per a l'estructura de grafit-grafè que és molt convenient per simulacions de transport balístic mitjançant la teoria de la densitat del funcional juntament amb la teoria del no equilibri de green per a calcular aquesta resistència. En particular, s'han simulat diverses longituds de superposició del grafè sobre el contacte de grafit per tal d'estudiar-ne el seu efecte. S'ha observat que per a concentracions de portadors intrínseques, la resistència de contacte és molt alta, però per a làmines de grafè dopades, aquesta resistència decau per sota del límit citat. Per tal d'avaluar aquests resultats, s'ha estudiat el camí de corrent mitjançant el formalisme d’autocanals. Aquesta anàlisi demostra que la transferència d'electrons es duu a terme mitjançant l'àrea de solapament en comptes de la vora. El cas de vora també ha estat considerat com a referència per ser el cas límit. S'ha conclòs que una capa de grafit abans de la capa de grafè és viable per tal de reduir la resistència de contacte en els contactes metall-grafè. Finalment, per tal d'entendre amb profunditat alguns dels resultats experimentals pel què fa a la resistència de contacte entre un metall i el grafè, l'objectiu és de generar estructures realistes mitjançant la dinànima molecular. Per a tal fi, el primer pas és el de parametritzar l'enllaç metall-carboni. El potencial d'odre d'enllaç fou escollit ja que és el potencial indicat per descriure aquesta mena d'enllaços covalents. Les interaccions metall-metall foren descrites pel potencial d'àtom incrustat, i la l'enllaç carboni-carboni pel potencial de Tersoff. El potencial de l'ordre d'enllaç està caracteritzat per un conjunt de deu paràmetres que descriuen les característiques de l'enllaç com són la distància d'equilibri o l'energia d'enllaç, entre altres. Mitjançant l'algorisme de Monte Carlo temperat paral·lel, s'ha pogut obtenir un conjunt de paràmetres per a la interacció Pd-C i Ni-C. In the last decade, the rise of graphene and other 2-dimensional materials revolutionized materials science. The new physics brought by these new materials opened up the possibilities of new devices with outstanding characteristics. In the field of radiofrequency electronics, some of these devices are predicted to bridge the terahertz gap in the frequency spectrum. In this thesis, several simulation techniques have been employed to study different devices with this long term goal in mind. In first place, a single-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) field effect transistor (FET) has been studied using the drift-diffusion model. To delve deeper into this, a MoS$_2$ $p-n$ junction has also been studied in this framework. Even though the drift-diffusion model is suited for bulk materials, a set of effective parameters was found. With it, it has been possible to reproduce the on-current of experimental data of the single-layer MoS$_2$ FET, but not the subthreshold swing. On the other hand, the MoS$_2$ $p-n$ junction yielded valuable results for the study of the depletion region. One of the hurdles that must be overcome in order to harness the possibilities of graphene and other 2D materials so that the performance of high frequency devices is not compromised is to achieve a low enough contact resistance (R$_c$) between the metal contact and the channel. In this thesis, an intermediate graphite layer between the metal contact and the graphene layer is proposed in order to achieve the 100 $\Omega\cdot\mu$m mark that is often quoted to be the upper limit for $R_c$ not to be the limiting factor. A graphite-graphene top contact structure is proposed and studied under ballistic transport by density functional theory (DFT) and Non-Equilibrium Green's Function Theory (NEGF) to calculate the contact resistance. In particular, several overlap amounts between graphene over the graphite bulk were studied. The results obtained are very promising for doped samples of graphene. To assess these results, a current path analysis was conducted using the eigenchannel formalism. This analysis showed that the transfer of electrons was done through the area of contact instead of an edge. It was concluded that graphite was a suitable buffer to reduce R$_c$ for metal-graphene contacts. Finally, in order to understand better some of the experimental results in the contact resistance of metal-graphene contacts, the objective was to generate realistic atomic configurations using Molecular Dynamics. For that, a first step is to parametrize the metal-carbon interactions. The bond order potential (BOP) force field was chosen for this as it is a force field that can accurately describe the metal-carbon covalent bond. The metal-metal bond is described using the embeded atom potential (EAM) and the carbon-carbon interaction, by the Tersoff force field. The BOP force field has a ten parameter set that describe the characteristics of the bond: equilibirum distance, bond energy, etc. Using Parallel Tempering Monte Carlo (PTMC) optimisation algorithm trained from first principles calculations of small metal particles on top of a graphene sheet, a set of parameters for the BOP force field was obtained for the Pd-C and Ni-C pairs.

La majoria dels aparells electrònics utilitzats avui en dia tenen components basats en materials semiconductors, els quals poden ser utilitzats en un ampli rang d’aplicacions, des de transistors fins a generadors termoelèctrics o fotovoltaics. Per tal de millorar el rendiment d’aquests aparells i reduir-ne la mida és necessari conèixer la física dels materials que el formen. Quan la mida es redueix, les propietats físiques dels materials canvia, i en especial la transferència de calor a través dels dispositius. Canvis en la temperatura poden afectar directament totes les altres propietats físiques. En aquesta tesi, el transport tèrmic és analitzat des de material bulk (mides grans) fins la nanoescala sota diferents aproximacions utilitzant primers principis. Per una banda, la conductivitat tèrmica en bulk s’estudia en el marc cinètic-col·lectiu, on l’equació de transport de Boltzmann (BTE) per fonons es soluciona en el model de Guyer i Krumhansl. Aquesta solució es coneguda com Kinetic Collective Model (KCM, model cinètic col·lectiu). El KCM, el qual separa la conductivitat tèrmica en una contribució cinètica i una col·lectiva, ha permès obtenir la conductivitat tèrmica d’un gran nombre de semiconductors, coincidint perfectament amb altres solucions actuals de la BTE, i el que és més important, amb dades experimentals. Per altra banda, per mostres de mida petita, s’han considerat dues aproximacions per estudiar els efectes de la superfície. En primer lloc s’ha utilitzat una aproximació cinètica-col·lectiva. En aquest cas, en el règim cinètic, els efectes de superfície es consideren com un mecanisme microscòpic de col·lisions, mentre que en el règim col·lectiu es calculen tenint en compte consideracions hidrodinàmiques. La limitació d’aquesta aproximació per geometries complexes ha promogut el desenvolupament del segon cas: un marc completament hidrodinàmic de transport tèrmic. Una equació hidrodinàmica de transport s’ha desenvolupat a partir del model de Guyer i Krumhansl i de la termodinàmica irreversible estesa (EIT). Aquesta equació hidrodinàmica s’ha utilitzat en primer lloc per estudiar geometries simples com nanofils amb un model de conductivitat tèrmica efectiva. A més, la utilització de condicions de contorn genèriques ha permès utilitzar la equació hidrodinàmica del KCM en càlculs d’elements finits per estudiar geometries complexes. Finalment s’ha fer un anàlisi de l’espectre de fonons i s’ha proposat la seva importància a l’hora de tractar processos transitori. Tots els temes tractats en aquesta tesi en l’àmbit del KCM s’han discutit i comprat amb altres models de transport tèrmic. Paral·lel al desenvolupament del model hidrodinàmic, les expressions de transport en l’aproximació de superfície cinètica-col·lectiva així com paràmetres hidrodinàmics s’han implementat en un software de codi lliure. Compartir el model com a eina per predir el transport tèrmic permetrà establir ponts entre la física del transport tèrmic des del punt de vista microscòpic al macroscòpic., Most of the daily life devices and electronic tools have components based on semiconductor materials, which can be used for a wide range of applications, from transistors to photovoltaic or thermoelectric energy sources. The improvement of these devices requires a full knowledge of the materials involved. When the size is reduced the physical properties of the materials change, and especially the heat transfer trough the devices. Changes in the temperature can affect directly other physical properties. In this thesis, thermal transport is analyzed from the bulk to the nanoscale under different approaches using first principles. On one side, the bulk thermal conductivity is studied in the general kinetic-collective framework, where the Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) for phonons is solved under the Guyer and Krumhansl model and maximizing the entropy of the system. This solution is known as Kinetic Collective Model (KCM). The KCM, which splits the thermal conductivity into a kinetic and a collective contribution, has allowed obtaining the thermal conductivity of a large number of semiconductors, with excellent agreement to other current solutions of the BTE and, more importantly, to experimental results. On the other side, for reduced size samples, two approaches has been considered in order to study size effects. In the first case, a kinetic-collective boundary approach is used. In this approach, in the kinetic regime the boundary is considered as a microscopic scattering mechanism, while boundary effects in the collective contribution are included from a hydrodynamic basis. The limitation of this approach for complex geometries has prompted the development of the second case: a full hydrodynamic thermal transport framework. A hydrodynamic thermal transport equation has been developed from the Guyer and Krumhansl model and the Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics (EIT) framework. This hydrodynamic equation has been applied to study simple geometries from an effective thermal conductivity model. In addition, the use of general hydrodynamic boundary conditions has allowed using the hydrodynamic KCM equation in finite elements calculations to study complex geometries. Finally, an analysis of the phonon spectrum and its importance to deal with transient transport regimes is proposed. Comparisons of the KCM results with other current solutions concerting all the topics of the thesis are discussed. Parallel to the development of the hydrodynamic model, the KCM expressions from the kinetic-collective boundary approach as well as hydrodynamic parameters have been implemented in an open source code. Sharing the model as a tool to predict thermal transport phenomena will allow bridging the physics of the heat transport from the microscopic to the macroscopic point of view.

Esta tesis doctoral versa sobre el transporte electrónico en sistemas de baja dimensión. En particular, se utlizan diferentes formalismos para abordar fenómenos cuánticos en el transporte electrónico en grafeno. Por una parte, se estudia la interacción de intercambio en los procesos de transporte electrónico dependientes del tiempo, mediante la teoría de trayectorias Bohmianas para paquetes de ondas. Se demuestra que la densidad de estados en el espacio de fases puede entenderse a través de la probabilidad de encontrar electrones con configuraciones similares. Debido a la repulsión de Pauli, cada electrón ocupa una región 2π en el espacio de fases. A través de la velocidad de los electrones, la densidad de estados electrónicos puede relacionarse con la densidad de flujo electrónico. La importancia de este nuevo concepto se hace evidente al tratar de modelizar la inyección de electrones en los nanodispositivos. En particular se muestra que la inyección balística en el grafeno es muy diferente de la inyección en nanodispositivos convencionales (con dispersiones parabólicas) debido a su particular relación de dispersión lineal y alta velocidad de Fermi. Este particular ritmo de entrada de electrones en el grafeno también produce un cambio importante en el ruido electrónico a alta frecuencia en el regimen balístico. Estos resultados abren nuevas perspectivas para el estudio del transporte cuántico dependiente del tiempo para muchos cuerpos. Por otra parte, con el fin de explorar los efectos de producir nanoondulaciones en el grafeno, se realizó un estudio de las propiedades electrónicas de transporte utilizando la Teoria de la Densidad Funcional y la función de Green. Se predice la formación de transporte cuasi-unidimensional en nanoondulaciones de grafeno, marcado por la cuantización de la conductancia tanto para ondulaciones a lo largo de la orientación cristalográfica armchair como de la zigzag., This dissertation deals with electronic transport in low dimensional systems. In particular, quantum phenomena in electronic transport in graphene are addressed using different formalisms. On one hand, the exchange interaction in time-dependent processes in electron transport is studies with Bohm trajectories for wavepackets. It is shown that the density of states in phase space can be understood through the probability of finding similar electron configurations. Due to the Pauli repulsion, each electron occupies a region 2π in phase space. Through the speed of electrons, the density of states (DOS) can be related to the density of flux (DOF). The relevance of this new concept is evident when modeling the injection of electrons into nanodevices. In particular, it is shown that ballistic injection in graphene is very different from injection into conventional nanodevices (with parabolic dispersions) due to its particular linear dispersion relation and high Fermi velocity. This particular rate of incoming electrons into graphene also produces a significant change in the highfrequency electronic noise in the ballistic regime. These results open new perspectives for the study of time-dependent many-body quantum transport. On the other hand, in order to explore the effects of producing nanoripples in graphene, a study of electronic transport properties using the Density Functional Theory and the Green's function was performed. Quasi-one-dimensional transport in graphene nanocorrugations has been predicted, highlighted by the quantization of conductance for undulations along both armchair and it zigzag crystallographic orientations.

Debido al gran número de transistores por mm2 que hoy en día podemos encontrar en las GPU convencionales, en los últimos años éstas se vienen utilizando para propósitos generales gracias a que ofrecen un mayor rendimiento para computación paralela. Este proyecto implementa el producto sparse matrix-vector sobre OpenCL. En los primeros capítulos hacemos una revisión de la base teórica necesaria para comprender el problema. Después veremos los fundamentos de OpenCL y del hardware sobre el que se ejecutarán las librerías desarrolladas. En el siguiente capítulo seguiremos con una descripción del código de los kernels y de su flujo de datos. Finalmente, el software es evaluado basándose en comparativas con la CPU. Degut al gran nombre de transistors per mm2 que avui en dia podem trobar a les GPU convencionals, en els darrers anys es venen utilitzant per a propòsits generals degut a que ofereixen un major rendiment per a la computació paral·lela. Aquest projecte implementa el producte sparse matrix-vector a sobre OpenCL. Als primers capítols fem una revisió de la base teòrica necessària per a comprendre el problema. Després veurem els fonaments d’OpenCL y del hardware a sobre el que s’executarà les llibreries desenvolupades. Al següent capítol seguirem amb una descripció del codi dels dos kernels i el seu flux de dades. Finalment, el software és avaluat en base a comparatives amb la CPU. Due to the large number of transistors per mm2 that today we can find in conventional GPU, in recent years it have been used for general purpose since they offer higher performance for data parallel computations. This project implements the product sparse matrix-vector on OpenCL. In the first chapter we review the theoretical basis necessary to understand the problem. Then we will see the foundations of OpenCL and hardware on which to run the developed software. In the next chapter will continue with a description of the kernel code and its data flow. Finally, the software is evaluated based on comparisons with the CPU.
