Abstract

We discuss the implementation of Whispering Gallery Modes Microbubble resonators (MBRs) as unique platforms for photoacoustic (PA) detection and photothermal (PT) spectroscopy. In a first experiment, the MBR transducer allowed to detect the PA signal generated by a suspension of gold nanorods (GNRs) within its core, leveraging on the MBR sharp optical spectrum and high sensitivity towards mechanical perturbations. Both static and flow-cytometry configuration were tested, finding that the MBR mechanical modes help detection by decoupling the environmental noise from the PA oscillation. In a second experiment, the MBR transducer allowed to reconstruct the GNRs absorption spectrum through the photothermal (PT) conversion, leveraging on high sensitivity towards temperature variations. We verified the scattering-free nature of the detection by using milk-stained GNRs suspension. We also found that the active locking of the MBR resonance increases the system sensitivity by an order-of-magnitude. These results make MBRs interesting candidates for combined PA and PT characterisation of extremely small samples for medical diagnosis, quality controls in food safety and chemical production processes.

Abstract

Seed-borne pathogens pose a significant threat to global food security. This study focuses on Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens (Cff), a quarantine plant pathogen causing bacterial wilt of common beans. Despite its global spread and economic impact, effective control measures are limited. Existing diagnostic methods, such as PCR, are time-consuming, destructive, and challenging for large-scale screening. This study explores the potential of photoacoustic techniques as a non-destructive, rapid, and high-throughput alternative. These techniques leverage the photoacoustic effect to measure optical absorption, offering high sensitivity and accuracy. Cff colonies exhibit distinct pigmentation, suggesting their suitability for photoacoustic detection. We characterised the optical properties of Cff and developed an in vitro model to simulate conditions within Cff-infected bean seeds. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the photoacoustic technique in detecting Cff in a mimicked-bean seed and indicate the potential discrimination of different coloured Cff strains. This study paves the way for a novel, non-invasive approach to the early detection of Cff and other seed-borne pathogens, contributing to improve crop health and food security. Abstract

Dilute arrays of GaAs/AlGaAs modulation-doped quantum dots (QDs) fabricated by electron-beam lithography and low impact reactive-ion etching exhibit highly homogeneous luminescence. Single quantum dots display spectral emission with peak energies and linewidths linked largely to the geometrical diameter of the dot and to the built-in electron population. Excitonic-like and biexcitonic-like emission intensities have activation energy of about 2 meV. These results highlight the potential of high quality nanofabricated QDs for applications in areas that require fine control of optical emission., Comment: 3 Figures

Abstract

This booklet has been produced by the partners of the EPRISE project. It provides an overview of the opportunities for photonics in the Medical Technology, Pharmaceutical, Agriculture, and Food sectors as well as information useful for SMEs to overcome market-entry barriers. It gathers the most relevant outcomes of the European Photonics Roadshow, including best practices, lessons learnt, takeaways and tips from experts. Information consists of: • general articles presenting target market trends and possible applications of photonics, and highlighting how the latter can contribute to solve societal challenges; • technical articles dealing with both market-specific topics such as clinical trials and pharmaceutical clinical trials and cross-sectoral themes such as access to finance, Intellectual Property (IP), start-up support, internationalisation. Finally, one case study per market has been selected as an example of challenges commonly faced by companies (scale-up manufacturing and regulatory strategy, access to large companies and IP strategy, recognition from end users, diversification). The booklet mainly targets photonics SMEs entering the four target markets to help them enhance their business skills, but also integrators and end users to increase their awareness of the potential of photonics-based solutions in their sector. Printed booklets will be distributed amongst the members of the EPRISE partners (photonics supply chain) and their regional and national funding bodies to stimulate investment in photonics ventures. The booklet will be also available on the project website in the form of e-book. This will enable larger dissemination towards local sectoral clusters and photonics clusters not part of the consortium, and companies active in other technological areas (e.g. robotics) to foster collaborative projects in the target markets.

Abstract

We present an experimental study of the radiative recombination dynamics in size-controlled anatase TiO2 nanoparticles in the range 20–130 nm. From time-integrated photoluminescence spectra and picosecond time-resolved experiments as a function of the nanoparticle size, excitation density, and temperature, we show that photoluminescence comes out from a bulk and a surface radiative recombination. The spectral shift and the different time dynamics provide a clear distinction between them.
