Abstract

Stellar-mass and supermassive black holes abound in the Universe, whereas intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) of ~10^2-10^5 solar masses in between are largely missing observationally, with few cases found only. Here we report the real-time discovery of a long-duration X-ray transient, EP240222a, accompanied by an optical flare with prominent H and He emission lines revealed by prompt follow-up observations. Its observed properties evidence an IMBH located unambiguously in the halo of a nearby galaxy and flaring by tidally disrupting a star -- the only confirmed off-nucleus IMBH-tidal disruption event so far. This work demonstrates the potential of sensitive time-domain X-ray surveys, complemented by timely multi-wavelength follow-ups, in probing IMBHs, their environments, demographics, origins and connections to stellar-mass and supermassive black holes., Comment: 64 pages, 15 figures, submitted

Abstract

Massive stars end their life as core-collapse supernovae, amongst which some extremes are Type Ic broad-lined supernovae associated with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) having powerful relativistic jets. Their less-extreme brethren make unsuccessful jets that are choked inside the stars, appearing as X-ray flashes or low-luminosity GRBs. On the other hand, there exists a population of extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) with timescales ranging from seconds to thousands of seconds, whose origins remain obscure. Known sources that contribute to the observed EFXT population include the softer analogs of LGRBs, shock breakouts of supernovae, or unsuccessful jets. Here, we report the discovery of the bright X-ray transient EP240414a detected by the Einstein Probe (EP), which is associated with the Type Ic supernova SN 2024gsa at a redshift of 0.401. The X-ray emission evolution is characterised by a very soft energy spectrum peaking at < 1.3 keV, which makes it distinct from known LGRBs, X-ray flashes, or low-luminosity GRBs. Follow-up observations at optical and radio bands revealed the existence of a weak relativistic jet that interacts with an extended shell surrounding the progenitor star. Located on the outskirts of a massive galaxy, this event reveals a new population of explosions of Wolf-Rayet stars characterised by a less powerful engine that drives a successful but weak jet, possibly owing to a progenitor star with a smaller core angular momentum than in traditional LGRB progenitors., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted. Abstract

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

Abstract

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available., Comment: Accepted by RAA

Abstract

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. We reported that the effect of n-type hydrogenated amorphous silicon (n a-Si:H) and intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon (i a-Si:H) layer thickness on SHJ solar cell. Minority carrier life time (MCLT) and implied Voc increase with increasing n a-Si:H layer thickness or i a-Si:H layer thickness. Based on MCLT data, surface passivation quality is stronger correlated to i a-Si:H layer thickness rather than n a-Si:H layer thickness. The result show that open-circuit voltage (Voc) increases, whereas fill factor (FF) and short-circuit current density (Jsc) reduces with increasing i a-Si:H layer thickness. The highest cell efficiency can be achieved by optimizing i a-Si:H layer thickness. While n a-Si:H layer thickness is too thin, Voc, Jsc and FF will obviously drop. Comparing with rear emitter SHJ solar cell to front emitter SHJ solar cell, rear emitter SHJ solar cell shows higher efficiency due to higher Jsc and fill factor FF.

Among many process parameters, wafer quality plays an important role in determining the efficiency of a solar cell. The correlation between wafer quality and cell performance was investigated. The wafers in the top, middle, and bottom parts of each ingot were taken and tested. The results from JV-curve measurements revealed that the decreased efficiencies may be due to ambiguous and dark edges of cells shown in photoluminescence imaging, indicating low quality of wafers. After optimizing cell process with a fine quality of wafer, SHJ solar cell on a 6 inch n-mono wafer with a conversion efficiency of 23.43 % was achieved by AUO HJ-RD team.

31st European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 729-731, The influence of front-side transparent conduction oxide films in the performance of silicon heterojunction solar cells with the front-emitter and the rear-emitter structures was investigated. The characteristic of the transparent conduction oxide films was examined. The increase in oxygen contents of transparent conduction oxide films significantly increased the short current density, and decrease the fill factor of fabricated cells using the corresponding films. In comparison with the front emitter, the fill factor decreased slightly for the rear emitter. Due to n-type conductivity of transparent conduction oxide in the rear-emitter solar cells, the toleration of the electrical property of transparent conduction oxide was thought to be extensive, which promoted the majority carriers (electrons) to collect and transport to the electrodes. Using rear emitter is believed to be able to effectively increase the short current density and keep the fill factor, thereby increasing cell efficiency. The efficiency of the rear-emitter HJT solar cell was 23.4% .

Using the sputtered NiV/Ag film to substitute standard screen printing technology in the back side is common method to reduce the cost. In this work, we report on the first observation of the adhesives problem in the interface between Ag film and transparent conducting oxide (TCO) layer when the ribbons are standard soldering on the cell, and propose ways to improve it. This work focuses on analyzing the interface and adhesion for heterojunction solar cells. Especially the formed amorphous on TCO layer will be discussed and compared to standard without amorphous TCO layer. Electrical characterizations, adhesive strength tests have been used to quantify the characteristics of the cell performance. It will be shown that a long term stable structure with amorphous TCO layer is possible with industrial methods.

23. Oxytocin increases the likeability of physically formidable men

Abstract

Physical size and strength are associated with dominance and threat. The current study tested (i) whether men’s evaluations of male strangers would be negatively influenced by cues indicating physical formidability, and (ii) whether these evaluations would be influenced by oxytocin, a neuropeptide that mediates social behavior and reduces social anxiety. In a placebo-controlled double-blind design, we administered either oxytocin (24 I.U.) or placebo intranasally to 100 healthy males and assessed their responses to an image of either a physically formidable (strong) or physically non-formidable (weak) male peer. Whereas participants receiving placebo expressed dislike and avoidance of the strong male relative to the weak male, oxytocin selectively improved social evaluation of the strong male. These results provide first evidence that oxytocin regulates social evaluation of peers based on body features indicating strength and formidability. We discuss the possibility that oxytocin may promote the expansion of social networks by increasing openness toward potentially threatening individuals.

29th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1081-1083, 23.11% of silicon heterojunction solar cells (HJT) on 6 inch wafers were fabricated using new structure of transparent conduction oxide (TCO) layers. The influences of synthesis conditions in the optical properties of TCO were investigated. The use of new structure of TCO layers were observed to exhibit high short current density and high fill factor. The results of J-V curve indicated that an increase in the thickness of rear-side TCO layers significantly increased the short current density of HJT cells. No light induced degradation (LID) after 48hrs was demonstrated for HJT cells. In addition, the 60-cell module was fabricated using 3 Busbar soldering process. The performance of 323.5Wwas achieved.

We reported that minority carrier life time (MCLT) result indicate a wide range of 600 μs to 2600 μs and implied Voc data indicate a wide range of 704 mV to 728 mV after a-Si deposited on texture wafer in trail production. This variation of MCLT may be attributed to CZ wafer quality, texture process, or PECVD. The statistical data of efficiency is widely distributed due to different batch process and configuration at the p-n heterojunction. The average efficiency of 21.23 % and Voc of 718 mV were achieved in the best batch of trail production. The highest efficiency SHJ solar cell of 21.6 % was achieved in trail production. The output power of 301.4 W and the module efficiency of 18.7 % were achieved. After optimization of cell process, SHJ solar cell on 6 inch wafers with an average conversion efficiency of 22 % and Voc of 720 mV were achieved by AUO HJ-RD team.

29th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1352-1354, A conversion efficiency of 22.75 % for silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells using standard 40 um finger width of copper electroplating process has been successfully achieved in our RD line at AU Optronics (AUO). However, 40 um finger width of copper (Cu) electroplating (EP) technique has encountered difficulties for further efficiency improvements. Our power loss simulation reveals efficiency gains from fine fingers. AUO solar RD team has been developing a new manufacturing technology by employing 20 um finger width of Cu EP to improve shortcircuit current. Both the experimental result and theoretical calculation show that the total power loss of 20 um finger width and optimum TCO film resistance of Cu EP cells is much smaller than the power loss from the state of 40 um finger width technique. According to the simulation result, an efficiency of more than 23.1% is achievable by our unique metallization technique.
