Orbital angular momentum (OAM), due to its theoretically orthogonal and unbounded helical phase index, has been utilized as an independent physical degree of freedom for ultrahigh-capacity information encryption. However, the imaging distance of an OAM hologram is typically inflexible and determined by the focal length of the Fourier transform lens placed behind the hologram. Here, 3D orbital angular momentum holography is proposed and implemented. The Fourier transform between the holographic plane and imaging plane is performed by superimposing Fresnel zone plates (FZP) onto the computer-generated holograms (CGH). The CGH is binarized and fabricated on the birefringence lithium niobate crystal by femtosecond laser micromachining. Experimental verification demonstrates the feasibility of the encoding method. Moreover, by superimposing FZPs with different focal lengths into various OAM channels, OAM-multiplexing holograms are constructed. Target images are separately projected to different planes, thereby enabling 3D multi-plane holographic imaging with low crosstalk. The interval between adjacent imaging planes can be uniform and minimal, free from depth of field constraints, thus achieving high longitudinal resolution. This work achieves OAM holography in a more compact manner and further expands its applicability.

Quasi-parametric amplification (QPA) is a nonlinear interaction in which the idler wave is depleted through some loss mechanism. QPA plays an important role in signal amplification in ultrafast photonics and quantum light generation. The QPA process has a number of features characterized by the non-Hermitian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. In this report, we explore new interaction regimes and uncover multiple $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry phase transitions in such QPA process where transitions are particularly sensitive to external parameters. In particular, we demonstrate the feasibility of detection of $10^{-11}$ inhomogeneities of the doped absorber, which is order of magnitude more sensitive than similar measurements performed in a linear absorption regime. In doing so, we reveal a family of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry phase transitions appearing in the QPA process and provide a novel nonlinear optical sensing mechanism for precise optical measurements., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Second-order nonlinearity gives rise to many distinctive physical phenomena, e.g., second-harmonic generation, which plays an important role in fundamental science and various applications. Lithium niobate, one of the most widely used nonlinear crystals, exhibits strong second-order nonlinear effects and electro-optic properties. However, its moderate refractive index and etching sidewall angle limit its capability in confining light into nanoscales, restricting its application in nanophotonics. Here, we exploit nanocavities formed by second-order circular Bragg gratings, which support resonant anapole modes to achieve highly enhanced SHG in thin film lithium niobate. The CBG nanocavity exhibits a record-high normalized conversion efficiency of $1.21\times10^{-2}\mathrm{cm^2/GW}$ under the pump intensity of $1.9$ $\mathrm{MW/cm^2}$. An SHG enhancement of $42,000$ is realized compared to TFLN. Besides, we also show s- and p-polarization independent SHG in elliptical Bragg nanocavities. High-quality microresonators can greatly enhance light-matter interactions and are excellent platforms for studying nonlinear optics. Wavelength conversion through nonlinear processes is the key to many applications of integrated optics. The stimulated Raman scattering process can extend the emission wavelength of a laser source to a wider range. Lithium niobate, as a Raman active crystalline material, has remarkable potential for wavelength conversion. Here, we demonstrate the generation of cascaded multi-phonon Raman signals near the second-harmonic-generation peak in X-cut thin-film lithium niobate microdisk. Fine tuning of the specific cascaded Raman spectral lines has also been made by changing the pump wavelength. Raman lines can reach wavelength up to about 80 nm away from the SHG signal. We realize the SFG process associated with Raman signals in the visible range as well. Our work extends the use of WGM microresonators as effective optical upconversion wavelength converters in nonlinear optical applications.

On-chip quantum information network requires qubit transfer between different wavelengths while preserving quantum coherence and entanglement, which needs broadband up-conversion available. Herein, we demonstrate a mode-hybridization based broadband nonlinear frequency conversion on X-cut thin film lithium niobate. With the spontaneous quasi-phase matching and quasi groupvelocity matching being simultaneously satisfied, broadband second harmonic generation with a 3-dB bandwidth up to 13 nm has been achieved in a micro-racetrack resonator. The same mechanism can work on the frequency conversion of the ultra-short pulse in the bent waveguide structure. This work will be beneficial to on-chip tunable frequency conversion and quantum light source generation on integrated photonic platforms, and further enable on-chip large-capacity multiplexing, multichannel optical information processing, and large quantum information networks.

Perfect absorption of light critically affects light-matter interaction for various applications. Coherent perfect absorbers (CPA) gain the unique capability of controlling light with light in a linear fashion. Multi-color CPAs [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 033901] are highly desirable for broadband and nonlinear light-to-light coherent control, however, the experimental demonstration has still remained elusive. Here we experimentally observe a dual-color version of CPA (DC-CPA) through a second harmonic generation in a single whispering-gallery-mode microcavity. The DC-CPA enables simultaneous perfect absorption of both the incoming fundamental wave and its second harmonic. Similar to its linear counterpart, coherent control in the DC-CPA can be also realized by tuning the relative phase and intensity between the two-colored waves through nonlinear interference instead of the linear one. This scheme breaks the linear boundary of the traditional CPA into a multi-frequency domain and paves the way toward all-optically signal processing and quantum information.

Photonic solvers that are able to find the ground states of different spin Hamiltonians can be used to study many interactive physical systems and combinatorial optimization problems. Here, we establish a real-and-momentum space correspondence of spin Hamiltonians by spatial light transport. The real-space spin interaction is determined by modulating the momentum-space flow of light. This principle is formulated as a generalized Plancherel theorem, allowing us to implement a simple optical simulator that can find the ground states for any displacement-dependent spin interactions. Particularly, we use this principle to reveal the exotic magnetic phase diagram from a J1-J2-J3 model, and we also observe the vortex-mediated Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless dynamics from the XY model. These experiments exhibit high calculation precision by subtly controlling spin interactions from the momentum space of light, offering a promising scheme to explore novel physical effects., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

Mode sorter is the crucial component of the communication systems based on orbital angular momentum (OAM). However, schemes proposed so far can only effectively sort integer OAM (IOAM) modes. Here, we demonstrate the effective sorting of fractional OAM (FOAM) modes by utilizing the coordinate transformation method, which can convert FOAM modes to IOAM modes. The transformed IOAM modes are subsequently sorted by using a mode conversion method called topological charge matching. The validation of our scheme is verified by implementing two sorting processes and corresponding mode purity analyses, both theoretically and experimentally. This new sorting method exhibits a huge potential of implementing a highly confidential and high-capacity FOAM-based communication system, which may inspire further applications in both classical and quantum regimes., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Subwavelength gratings play a fundamental and pivotal role in numerous science and applications for wave manipulation, exhibiting distinctive features such as filtering, phase manipulation, and anti-reflection. However, conventional fabrication methods for ultrasmall periodic structures are constrained by the fundamental optical diffraction limit, making it challenging to produce subwavelength gratings for optics. Here, we demonstrate a novel technique to build a reconfigurable subwavelength photorefractive grating (SPG) in a thin-film lithium niobate on the platform of an optical microcavity. Such SPGs are optically induced through the photorefractive effect and the subwavelength features originate from the spatial phase modulations of the pump's standing wave. The resulting SPGs lead to the mode splitting of two counter-propagating modes inside the microcavity, exhibiting an Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT)-like transmission spectrum. Moreover, the unique subwavelength characteristic of SPGs enables first-order quasi-phase-matching for backward second-harmonic generation, a long-standing problem in nonlinear optics. Also, free-space-to-chip vertical nonlinear frequency conversion can be achieved in a similar manner. These results provide a flexible approach towards fabricating subwavelength gratings, which holds significant potential in various applications such as nonlinear frequency conversion, optical communication, sensing, and quantum technologies.

Non-Hermitian degeneracies reveal intriguing and non-trivial behaviors in open physical systems. Examples like Parity-Time (PT) symmetry breaking, topological encircling chirality, and enhanced sensing near an exceptional point (EP) are often associated with the abrupt nature of the phase transition around these degeneracies. Here we experimentally observe a cavity-enhanced second-harmonic frequency (SHG) conversion on a PT symmetry line, i.e. a set consisting of open-ended isofrequency or isoloss lines, both terminated at EPs on the Riemann surface in parameter space. The enhancement factor can reach as high as 300, depending on the crossing point whether in the symmetry or the broken phase of the PT line. Moreover, such enhancement of SHG enables sensitive distance sensing with a nanometer resolution. Our works may pave the way for practical applications in sensing, frequency conversion, and coherent wave control.

Thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) has become an platform for modern integrated circuits due to its excellent optical properties. With the development of rare earth ion doped TFLN, important breakthroughs of on-chip microlasers has emerged and show significant application for optical communication, computing and quantum photonics. However, challenges still remain in developing compact lasers with small mode volumes and low threshold on rare earth ion doped TFLN for highly efficient dense integration. In this letter, we fabricated a heterogeneous photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavity on erbium-doped TFLN with a quality factor of 1.2\times10^4 and firstly demonstrated a single-mode integrated PhC laser with submicron mode volume on TFLN platform. Laser at 1559.63 nm is achieved with the 974 nm single-mode pump. The effective mode volume is 1.44 ({\lambda}/n)^3 (~ 0.645 {\mu}m^3) and the threshold power is 163 {\mu}W. Enhanced photorefractive effect in the PhC cavity is measured. This lithium niobate photonic crystal nanocavity laser, as a compact telecommunication C-band on-chip light source, would benefit the progress of high-speed and low-cost optical community on TFLN integrated photonics.

With the advance development in quantum science, constructing a large-scale quantum network has become a hot area of future quantum information technology. Future quantum networks promise to enable many fantastic applications and will unlock fundamentally new technologies in information security and large-scale computation. The future quantum internet is required to connect quantum information processors to achieve unparalleled capabilities in secret communication and enable quantum communication between any two points on Earth. However, the existing quantum networks are basically constructed to realize the communication between the end users in their own networks. How to bridge different independent networks to form a fully-connected quantum internet becomes a pressing challenge for future networks. Here, we demonstrate the quantum fusion of two independent networks for the first time based on multiuser entanglement swapping, to merge two 10-user networks into a larger network with 18 users in quantum correlation layer. By performing the Bell state measurement between two nonneighboring nodes, the users from different networks can establish entanglement and ultimately every pair of the 18 users are able to communicate with each other using the swapped states. Our approach opens attractive opportunities for the establishment of quantum entanglement between remote nodes in different networks, which facilitates versatile quantum information interconnects and has great application in constructing large-scale intercity quantum communication networks.

Light source is indispensable component in on-chip system. Compared with hybrid or heterogeneous integrated laser, monolithically integrated laser is more suitable for high density photonic integrated circuit (PIC) since the capability of large-scale manufacturing, lower active-passive coupling loss and less test complexity. Recent years have seen the spark of researches on rare-earth ion doped thin film lithium niobate (REI:TFLN), demonstrations have been made both in classical and quantum chips. However, low output power and limited quantum emitting efficiency hinder the application of the chip-scale laser source based on REI:TFLN. Here a highly efficient integrated laser assisted by cascaded amplifiers is proposed and experimentally prepared on Erbium-doped TFLN. A slope efficiency of 0.43% and a linewidth of 47.86 kHz are obtained. The maximum integrated laser power is 7.989 {\mu}W. Our results show a viable solution to improve efficiency by self-amplification without changing the intrinsic quantum emitting efficiency of the material, and our design has potential application in incorporating with functional devices such as optical communications, integrated quantum memory and quantum emission.

The micro-cavity is a promising sensor platform, any perturbation would disturb its linewidth, cause resonance shift or splitting. However, such sensing resolution is limited by the cavity's optical quality factor and mode volume. Here we propose and demonstrate in an on-chip integrated microcavity system that resolution of a self referenced sensor could be enhanced with multi mode coupling.

Spatiotemporal modulation offers a variety of opportunities for light manipulations. In this paper, we propose a way towards arbitrary transformation for pulses sequentially propagating within one waveguide in space via temporal waveguide coupling. The temporal waveguide coupling operation is achieved by spatiotemporally modulating the refractive index of the spatial waveguide with a traveling wave through segmented electrodes. We derive the temporal coupled-mode equations and discuss how systematic parameters affect the temporal coupling coefficients. We further demonstrated a temporal Mach-Zehnder interferometer and universal multiport interferometer, which enables arbitrary unitary transformation for pulses. We showcase a universal approach for transforming pulses among coupled temporal waveguides, which requires only one spatial waveguide under spatiotemporal modulation, and hence provide a flexible, compact, and highly compatible method for optical signal processing in time domain.

Non-Hermitian topological photonics is of great interest in bridging topological matter with gain/dissipation engineering in optics. A key problem in this direction is the interplay between the effective gauge potential and the non-Hermiticity. Here we tackle this problem in a synthetic non-Hermitian Hall ladder and experimentally observe antichiral edge currents (ACECs) of photons, by tuning the locally uniform effective magnetic flux and the on-site gain/loss. Such ACECs provide a topological method to probe the signatures of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) from steady-state bulk dynamics. The universality of this method is verified by its generalization to three dimensions. This study paves a way to investigate exotic non-Hermitian topological physics and has potential applications in topological photonics engineering.

The study of dissipative systems has attracted great attention, as dissipation engineering has become an important candidate towards manipulating light in classical and quantum ways. Here,we investigate the behavior of a topological system with purely dissipative couplings in a synthetic time-frequency space. An imaginary bandstructure is shown, where eigen-modes experience different eigen-dissipation rates during the evolution of the system, resulting in mode competition between edge states and bulk modes. We show that distributions associated with edge states can dominate over bulk modes with stable amplification once the pump and saturation mechanisms are taken into consideration, which therefore points to a laser-like behavior for edge states robust against disorders. This work provides a scheme for manipulating multiple degrees of freedom of light by dissipation engineering, and also proposes a great candidate for topological lasers with dissipative photonics.

Atomic arrays provide an important quantum optical platform with photon-mediated dipoledipole interactions, which can be engineered to realize key applications in quantum information processing. A major obstacle for such application is the fast decay of the excited states. By controlling two-band Bloch oscillations in an atomic array under external magnetic field, here we show that exotic subradiance can be realized and maintained at a time scale upto 12 orders of magnitude larger than the spontaneous decay time in atomic arrays with the finite size. The key finding is to show a way for preventing the wavepacket of excited states scattering into the dissipative zone inside the free space light cone, which therefore leads to the excitation staying at a subradiant state for extremely long decay time. We show that such operation can be achieved by introducing a spatially linear potential from external magnetic field in atomic arrays and then manipulating interconnected two-band Bloch oscillations along opposite directions. Our results also point out the possibility of controllable switching between superradiant and subradiant states, which leads to potential applications in quantum storage., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

On-chip efficient nonlinear functions are instrumental in escalating the utilities and performance of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), especially for a wide range of classical and quantum applications, such as tunable coherent radiation, optical frequency conversion, spectroscopy, quantum science, etc. Lithium tantalate (LT) has been widely used in nonlinear wavelength converters, surface acoustic wave resonators, and electro-optic, acoustic-optic devices owing to its excellent optical properties. Here, we fabricated a Z-cut lithium tantalate on insulator (LTOI) microdisk with high quality(Q) factors in both telecom (10$^{6}$) and visible (10$^{5}$) bands by optimizing the fabrication. With the Q factor of the LTOI microdisk increasing, we can obtain higher pump light intensity in the cavity which is beneficial to get more optical nonlinear effect easily. By making use of the mode phase matching of interacting waves and inputting high pump power, we experimentally observed on-chip near-infrared light, visible (red, green), and ultraviolet (UV) from microresonator-based $ \chi^{(2)}-\chi^{(2)}$, $ \chi^{(2)}-\chi^{(3)}$, and $\chi^{(2)}$ nonlinear processes such as cascaded four-wave mixing (cFWM), cascaded sum-frequency generation (cSFG), third harmonic generation (THG), second harmonic generation (SHG). It is believed that the LTOI can support a variety of on-chip optical nonlinear processes, which heralds its new application potential in integrated nonlinear photonics.

In this work, a doubly resonant photonic crystal (PhC) cavity using the merged bound states in the continuum (BICs) is proposed to obtain a higher second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency. Firstly by scanning geometry parameters the accidental BICs and a band-edge mode outside the light cone can be obtained. Then as the lattice constant or the thickness of the slab is adjusted the accidental BICs will merge. A supercell with large and small holes is constructed and the band-edge mode outside the light cone can be mode-matched with the merged BICs mode. Finally the heterostructure PhC cavity is designed. The merged BICs show a high quality factor for the photonic crystal with finite size. Consequently, the SHG efficiency of the lattice constant near merged BICs of ~6000% W-1 is higher than the one of the isolated BIC.

In this paper, by cascading several bichromatic photonic crystals we demonstrate that the quality factor can be much larger compared with that in an isolated cavity without increasing the total size of the device. We take lithium niobate photonic crystal as an example to illustrate that the simulated quality factor of the cascaded cavity can attain 10^5 with a 70{\deg} slant angle, which is an order of magnitude larger than that in isolated cavity. The device can be fabricated easily by current etching technique for lithium niobate. We have fabricated the proposed device experimentally including holes with 70{\deg} slant angle. This work is expected to provide guidance to the design of photonic crystal cavity with high-quality factor.

Non-Hermitian systems have recently attracted broad interest and exhibited intriguing physical phenomena, in which the non-Hermitian skin effect is one of the most remarkable quantum phenomena desiring detailed investigations and has been widely studied in various fermionic and bosonic systems. Here we propose a non-Hermitian atom-waveguide system composed of a tilted one-dimensional atomic array coupled with two identical waveguides with opposite chiralities. Such system creates an effective lattice model including nonreciprocal long-range hoppings through the chiral-waveguide photon-mediated interactions. We find the excitation of the collective atomic states concentrates in the middle interface, pointing towards the non-Hermitian skin effect associated with subradiant modes, while, on the contrary, superradiant modes exhibit extended features. Simulation results present subradiant funneling effect, with robustness against small atomic position disorders. Our work underpins the fundamental comprehension towards the non-Hermitian skin effect in open quantum systems and also provide prospective paths to study non-Hermitian systems in the area of quantum optics., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Levitation offers extreme isolation of mechanical systems from their environment, while enabling unconstrained high-precision translation and rotation of objects. Diamagnetic levitation is one of the most attractive levitation schemes, because it allows stable levitation at room temperature without the need for a continuous power supply. However, dissipation by eddy currents in conventional diamagnetic materials significantly limits the application potential of diamagnetically levitating systems. Here, we present a route towards high $Q$ macroscopic levitating resonators by substantially reducing eddy current damping using graphite particle based diamagnetic composites. We demonstrate resonators that feature quality factors $Q$ above 450,000 and vibration lifetimes beyond one hour, while levitating above permanent magnets in high vacuum at room temperature. The composite resonators have a $Q$ that is more than 400 times higher than that of diamagnetic graphite plates. By tuning the composite particle size and density, we investigate the dissipation reduction mechanism and enhance the $Q$ of the levitating resonators. Since their estimated acceleration noise is as low as some of the best superconducting levitating accelerometers at cryogenic temperatures, the high $Q$ and large mass of the presented composite resonators positions them as one of the most promising technologies for next generation ultra-sensitive room temperature accelerometers.

Quantum Hall system possesses topologically protected edge states which have enormous theoretical and practical implications in both fermionic and bosonic systems. Harnessing the quantum Hall effect in optical platforms with lower dimensionality is highly desirable with synthetic dimensions and has attracted broad interests in the photonics society. Here, we introduce an alternative way to realize the artificial magnetic field in a frequency dimension, which is achieved in a pump-probe configuration with cross-phase modulations in a one-dimensional four waveguide array. The dynamics of the topological chiral edge state has been studied and the influence from the crosstalk of the pump fields has been explored. Our work shows an all-optical way to simulate the quantum Hall system in a photonic system and holds potential applications in manipulating light in waveguide systems.

It is of fundamental interest in controlling the light-matter interaction for a long time in the field of quantum information processing. However, usual excitation with the propagating photon can hardly excite a localized state of light while keeping the atom under a subradiant decay in an atom-waveguide system. Here, we propose a model of coupling between a giant atom and the dynamically-modulated coupled-resonator waveguide and find that a bound state, where the light shows the localization effect and atom exhibits a subradiant decay time, can be excited by a propagating photon. An analytical treatment based on the separation of the propagating states and localized states of light has been used and provides inspiring explanation of our finding, i.e., a propagating photon can be efficiently converted to the localized light through the light-atom interactions in three resonators at frequency difference precisely equivalent to external modulation frequency. Our work therefore provides an alternative method for actively localizing the photon in a modulated coupled-resonator waveguide system interacting with giant atom, and also points out a way to study the light-atom interaction in a synthetic frequency dimension that holds the similar Hamiltonian.

In physics, synthetic dimensions trigger great interest to manipulate light in different ways, while in technology, lithium niobate shows important capability towards on-chip applications. Here, based on the state-of-art technology, we propose and study a theoretical model of dynamically-modulated waveguide arrays with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger configuration in the spatial dimension. The propagation of light through the one-dimensional waveguide arrays mimics time evolution of field in a synthetic two-dimensional lattice including the frequency dimension. By adding the effective gauge potential, we find quasi-edge state that the intensity distribution manifests not at the boundary as the traditional edge state, which leads to an exotic topologically protected one-way transmission along adjacent boundary. Furthermore, a cosine-shape isolated band exhibits, supporting the topological Bloch oscillation in the frequency dimension under the effective constant force, which is localized at the spatial boundary and shows the topological feature. Our work therefore points out further capability of light transmission under topological protections in both spatial and spectral regimes, and provides future on-chip applications in the lithium niobate platform., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Constructions of synthetic lattices in photonics attract growingly attentions for exploring interesting physics beyond the geometric dimensionality, among which modulated ring resonator system has been proved as a powerful platform to create different kinds of connectivities between resonant modes along the synthetic frequency dimension with many theoretical proposals. Various experimental realizations are investigated in a single ring resonator, while building beyond simple synthetic lattices in multiple rings with different types remains lacking, which desires to be accomplished as an important step further. Here, we implement the experimental demonstration of generating the one-dimensional Lieb lattice along the frequency axis of light, realized in two coupled ring resonators while the larger ring undergoing dynamic modulation. Such synthetic photonic structure naturally exhibits the physics of flat band. We show that the time-resolved band structure read out from the drop-port output of the excited ring is the intensity projection of the band structure onto specific resonant mode in the synthetic momentum space, where gapless flat band, mode localization effect, and flat to non-flat band transition are observed in experiments and verified by simulations. Our work gives a direct evidence for the constructing synthetic Lieb lattice with two rings, which hence makes a solid step towards experimentally constructing more complicated lattices in multiple rings associated with synthetic frequency dimension.

Synthetic dimensions in photonic structures provide unique opportunities for actively manipulating light in multiple degrees of freedom. Here, we theoretically explore a dispersive waveguide under the dynamic phase modulation that supports single pulse manipulations in the synthetic (2+1) dimensions. Compared with the counterpart of the conventional (2+1) space-time, we explore temporal diffraction and frequency conversion in a synthetic time-frequency space while the pulse evolves along the spatial dimension. By introducing the effective gauge potential well for photons in the synthetic time-frequency space with the control of the modulation phase, we show that a rich set of pulse propagation behaviors can be achieved, including confined pulse propagation, fast/slow light, and pulse compression. With the additional nonlinear oscillation subject to the effective force along the frequency axis of light, we provide an exotic approach for actively manipulating the single pulse in both temporal and spectral domains, which shows the great promise for applications of the pulse processing and optical communications in integrated photonics., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Erbium-doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) laser plays an important role in the complete photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Here, we demonstrate an integrated tunable whisper galley single mode laser (WGSML) by making use of a pair of coupled microdisk and microring on LNOI. A 974 nm single-mode pump light can have an excellent resonance in the designed microdisk, which is beneficial to the whisper gallery mode (WGM) laser generation. The WGSML at 1560.40 nm with a maximum 31.4 dB side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) has been achieved. By regulating the temperature, WGSMLs output power increased and the central wavelength can be changed from 1560.30 nm to 1560.40 nm. What's more, 1560.60 nm and 1565.00 nm WGSMLs have been achieved by changing the coupling gap width between microdisk and microring. We can also use the electro-optic effect of LNOI to obtain more accurate adjustable WGSMLs in further research.

Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) based on entanglement can directly transmit confidential information. However, the inability to simultaneously distinguish the four sets of encoded entangled states limits its practical application. Here, we explore a deterministic QSDC network based on time-energy entanglement and sum-frequency generation. 15 users are in a fully connected QSDC network, and the fidelity of the entangled state shared by any two users is greater than 97%. The results show that when any two users are performing QSDC over 40 kilometers of optical fiber, the fidelity of the entangled state shared by them is still greater than 95%, and the rate of information transmission can be maintained above 1Kbp/s. Our Letter demonstrates the feasibility of a proposed QSDC network, and hence lays the foundation for the realization of satellite-based long-distance and global QSDC in the future., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Due to their capacity for non-classical light generation, high-efficiency second-order nonlinear parametric processes play an important role in quantum photonic technology, and chip-scale realization of these processes is recognized as the key to building efficient light sources for integrated quantum photonic circuits. To achieve ultra-high nonlinear conversion efficiency, traditional method uses quasi-phase matching (QPM) technology. However, QPM requires electric field poling, which is incompatible with the CMOS fabrication process, and this hinders the wafer-scale production of integrated photonic circuits. In this paper, we demonstrate efficient spontaneous quasi-phase matched (SQPM) frequency conversion in a micro-racetrack resonator. Our approach does not involve poling, but exploits the anisotropy of the ferroelectric crystals to allow the phase-matching condition to be fulfilled spontaneously as the TE-polarized light circulates in a specifically designed racetrack resonator. SQPM second harmonic generation is observed with a normalized intracavity conversion efficiency of 0.85%/W, corresponding to the 111st-order QPM. This could theoretically reach 186,000%/W by first-order QPM. In this case such high intracavity conversion efficiency can be implemented in practice with an optimized outward coupling. Our configurable SQPM approach will benefit the application of nonlinear frequency conversion in chip-scale integrated photonics with CMOS-compatible fabrication processes, and is applicable to other on-chip nonlinear processes such as quantum frequency conversion or frequency-comb generation.

Diamagnetic levitation offers stable confinement of an object from its environment at zero power, and thus is a promising technique for developing next generation unclamped resonant sensors. In this work, we realize a resonant weighing scale using a graphite plate that is diamagnetically levitating over a checkerboard arrangement of permanent magnets. We characterize the bending vibrations of the levitating object using laser Doppler vibrometry and use microgram glass beads to calibrate the responsivity of the sensor's resonance frequency to mass changes. The sensor is used for real-time measurement of the evaporation rate of nano-litre droplets with high-accuracy. By analyzing the resonator's frequency stability, we show that the millimeter graphite sensor can reach mass resolutions down to 4.0ng, relevant to biological and chemical sensing concepts., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

A dynamically-modulated ring system with frequency as a synthetic dimension has been shown to be a powerful platform to do quantum simulation and explore novel optical phenomena. Here we propose synthetic honeycomb lattice in a one-dimensional ring array under dynamic modulations, with the extra dimension being the frequency of light. Such system is highly re-configurable with modulation. Various physical phenomena associated with graphene including Klein tunneling, valley-dependent edge states, effective magnetic field, as well as valley-dependent Lorentz force can be simulated in this lattice, which exhibits important potentials for manipulating photons in different ways. Our work unveils a new platform for constructing the honeycomb lattice in a synthetic space, which holds complex functionalities and could be important for optical signal processing as well as quantum computing.

Integrated optical amplifiers and light sources are of great significance for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and have attracted many research interests. Doping rare-earth ions in materials as a solution to realize efficient optical amplifiers and lasing has been investigated a lot. We investigate the erbium-doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). Here, spiral waveguide amplifiers were fabricated on a 1-mol\% erbium-doped LNOI by CMOS-compatible technique. We demonstrated a maximum internal net gain of 8.3 dB at 1530 nm indicating a net gain per unit length of 15.6 dB/cm with a compact spiral waveguide of 5.3 mm length and $ \sim $0.06 mm$ ^{2} $ footprint. The erbium-doped integrated lithium niobate spiral waveguide amplifiers would pave the way in the PICs of the lithium niobate platform, especially in achieving efficient integration of active and passive devices on a lithium niobate thin film, which will make full use of its excellent physical properties such as remarkable photoacoustic, electro-optic, and piezoelectric characteristics.
