1. Surgeons' disposition on the use of autologous blood transfusion in tertiary hospitals in Enugu, Nigeria

Abstract

Background: The need for autologous blood transfusion in our tertiary hospitals to restore patients' hemodynamics with little or no complications cannot be overemphasized. Aims: This study is aimed at assessing surgeons' challenges and patients' readiness to accept autologous blood transfusion. Materials and Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, and National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, from September to December 2020. A convenient sampling method was adopted in the distribution of questionnaires, and a total of 67 surgeons were enrolled in the study. Collated data were analyzed using SPSS software 21. Results: The study revealed that 60% of the respondents claimed that commercial donors were observed to be the major source of allogenic blood donation. Consequently, 34.3% and 80.6% of the respondents admitted that blood-borne transmissible infections and blood transfusion reactions, respectively, were still a challenge in their practice. The outcome from this study also showed that 59% of the respondents claimed that their patients are not knowledgeable enough to make informed decision on the use of autologous blood transfusion while 52.4% of the respondents admitted that they do not have the facility for processing autologous blood transfusion. For the surgical specialties, all were willing to prescribe autologous blood transfusion for their patients, though no statistical difference (P < 0.05) exists among the specialties. Conclusion: Autologous blood transfusion has remained the mainstay as effective and safest means of blood transfusion in overall patient care; hence, surgeons should incorporate this concept into their practice to enable patients make an informed decision.

Abstract

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data.

Abstract

Improving the generalizability of psychology findings to a culture requires sampling participants in that culture. Yet psychology studies rarely sample from African populations, even though it represents 17% of the overall world population. This study aimed to conduct an African-led replication study to test whether Rottman and Young’s “mere-trace” hypothesis of moral reasoning (that people are more sensitive to the dosage of harm-based transgressions than purity transgressions) extends to several African communities. We used a training method developed by the Collaborative Replication and Education Project (CREP) to support and train 23 African collaborators. During this process, we conducted a paradigmatic replication of Rottman’s and Young’s test of the mere trace hypothesis in Egypt, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania. [We did not find/We found] evidence for the main interaction effect (bdomain x dose = xxx) of transgression severity on the moral wrongness judgment of impure and harmful violations. [We did/ However, we did not] replicate Rottman and Young's findings among Africans. This project helped improve the research capacity of our participating African sites and will support other researchers in collaborating with African scholars.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion regulation strategy which modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries/regions (N = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vs. both control conditions) had consistent effects in reducing negative emotions and increasing positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world to build resilience during the pandemic and beyond.

Abstract

In history, pandemic outbreaks have wiped out populations as well as paved way for innovations and advances in Medicine and Public health. This study aims to ascertain the inherent knowledge gap and practice regarding the use of medical mask by healthcare workers during Covid-19 pandemic. Methods. This cross sectional survey was conducted at six tertiary hospitals within the south east Nigeria in April-June 2020 using convenient sampling method, a total of 273 respondents was enrolled in the study. A three components questionnaire comprising demographic inquiries, questions was designed to assess knowledge and practice of healthcare professionals regarding the use of medical mask. Collated data was analysed using SPSS software version 21. Result, 73.3% of the participant thought they knew the procedural steps in the use of medical mask however only 18.3% healthcare workers had good practice on the use of medical mask.
