This paper concerns the estimation of linear panel data models with endogenous regressors and a latent group structure in the coefficients. We consider instrumental variables estimation of the group-specific coefficient vector. We show that direct application of the Kmeans algorithm to the generalized method of moments objective function does not yield unique estimates. We newly develop and theoretically justify two-stage estimation methods that apply the Kmeans algorithm to a regression of the dependent variable on predicted values of the endogenous regressors. The results of Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that two-stage estimation with the first stage modeled using a latent group structure achieves good classification accuracy, even if the true first-stage regression is fully heterogeneous. We apply our estimation methods to revisiting the relationship between income and democracy.

In this paper, we introduce the Spectral Coefficient Learning via Operator Network (SCLON), a novel operator learning-based approach for solving parametric partial differential equations (PDEs) without the need for data harnessing. The cornerstone of our method is the spectral methodology that employs expansions using orthogonal functions, such as Fourier series and Legendre polynomials, enabling accurate PDE solutions with fewer grid points. By merging the merits of spectral methods - encompassing high accuracy, efficiency, generalization, and the exact fulfillment of boundary conditions - with the prowess of deep neural networks, SCLON offers a transformative strategy. Our approach not only eliminates the need for paired input-output training data, which typically requires extensive numerical computations, but also effectively learns and predicts solutions of complex parametric PDEs, ranging from singularly perturbed convection-diffusion equations to the Navier-Stokes equations. The proposed framework demonstrates superior performance compared to existing scientific machine learning techniques, offering solutions for multiple instances of parametric PDEs without harnessing data. The mathematical framework is robust and reliable, with a well-developed loss function derived from the weak formulation, ensuring accurate approximation of solutions while exactly satisfying boundary conditions. The method's efficacy is further illustrated through its ability to accurately predict intricate natural behaviors like the Kolmogorov flow and boundary layers. Machine learning methods have been lately used to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) and dynamical systems. These approaches have been developed into a novel research field known as scientific machine learning in which techniques such as deep neural networks and statistical learning are applied to classical problems of applied mathematics. In this paper, we develop a novel numerical algorithm that incorporates machine learning and artificial intelligence to solve PDEs. Based on the Legendre-Galerkin framework, we propose the {\it unsupervised machine learning} algorithm to learn {\it multiple instances} of the solutions for different types of PDEs. Our approach overcomes the limitations of data-driven and physics-based methods. The proposed neural network is applied to general 1D and 2D PDEs with various boundary conditions as well as convection-dominated {\it singularly perturbed PDEs} that exhibit strong boundary layer behavior., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Magnetic proximity interactions (MPIs) between atomically-thin semiconductors and two-dimensional magnets provide a means to manipulate spin and valley degrees of freedom in nonmagnetic monolayers, without the use of applied magnetic fields. In such van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, MPIs originate in the nanometer-scale coupling between the spin-dependent electronic wavefunctions in the two materials, and typically their overall effect is regarded as an effective magnetic field acting on the semiconductor monolayer. Here we demonstrate that this picture, while appealing, is incomplete: The effects of MPIs in vdW heterostructures can be markedly asymmetric, in contrast to that from an applied magnetic field. Valley-resolved optical reflection spectroscopy of MoSe$_{2}$/CrBr$_{3}$ vdW structures reveals strikingly different energy shifts in the $K$ and $K'$ valleys of the MoSe$_2$, due to ferromagnetism in the CrBr$_3$ layer. Strong asymmetry is observed at both the A- and B-exciton resonances. Density-functional calculations indicate that valley-asymmetric MPIs depend sensitively on the spin-dependent hybridization of overlapping bands, and as such are likely a general feature of such hybrid vdW structures. Realizing van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy in the 80s represents a breakthrough that circumvents the stringent lattice matching and processing compatibility requirements in conventional covalent heteroepitaxy. However, due to the weak vdW interactions, there is little control over film qualities by the substrate. Typically, discrete domains with a spread of misorientation angles are formed, limiting the applicability of vdW epitaxy. Here we report the epitaxial growth of monocrystalline, covalent Cr5Te8 2D crystals on monolayer vdW WSe2 by chemical vapor deposition, driven by interfacial dative bond formation. The lattice of Cr5Te8, with a lateral dimension of a few ten microns, is fully commensurate with that of WSe2 via 3 x 3 (Cr5Te8)-7 x 7 (WSe2) supercell matching, forming a single crystalline moire superlattice. Our work has established a conceptually distinct paradigm of thin film epitaxy termed dative epitaxy, which takes full advantage of covalent epitaxy with chemical bonding for fixing the atomic registry and crystal orientation, while circumventing its stringent lattice matching and processing compatibility requirements; conversely, it ensures the full flexibility of vdW epitaxy, while avoiding its poor orientation control. Cr5Te8 2D crystals grown by dative epitaxy exhibit square magnetic hysteresis, suggesting minimized interfacial defects that can serve as pinning sites.

Quantum light emitters (QEs) capable of generating single photons of well-defined circular polarization could enable non-reciprocal single photon devices and deterministic spin-photon interfaces critical for realizing complex quantum networks. To date, emission of such chiral quantum light has been achieved via the application of intense external magnetic field electrical/optical injection of spin polarized carriers/excitons, or coupling with complex photonic/meta-structures. Here we report free-space generation of highly chiral single photons from QEs created in monolayer WSe2 - NiPS3 heterostructures at zero external magnetic field. These QEs emit in the 760-800 nm range with a degree of circular polarization and single photon purity as high as 0.71 and 80% respectively, independent of pump laser polarization. QEs are deterministically created by pressing a scanning probe microscope tip into a two-dimensional heterostructure comprising a WSe2 monolayer and a ~50 nm thick layer of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator NiPS3. Temperature dependent magneto-photoluminescence studies indicate that the chiral quantum light emission arises from magnetic proximity interactions between localized excitons in the WSe2 monolayer and the out-of-plane magnetization of AFM defects in NiPS3, both of which are co-localized by the strain field arising from the nanoscale indentations., Comment: 20 pages,4 figures

In monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, many-body correlations can manifest in optical spectra when photoexcited electron-hole pairs (excitons) are introduced into a 2D Fermi sea of mobile carriers. At low carrier densities, the formation of positively and negatively charged excitons ($X^\pm$) is well documented. However, in WSe$_2$ monolayers, an additional absorption resonance, often called $X^{-\prime}$, emerges at high electron density. Its origin is not understood. Here we investigate the $X^{-\prime}$ state via polarized absorption spectroscopy of electrostatically-gated WSe$_2$ monolayers in high magnetic fields to 60~T. Field-induced filling and emptying of the lowest optically-active Landau level in the $K'$ valley causes repeated quenching of the corresponding optical absorption. Surprisingly, however, these quenchings are accompanied by absorption changes to higher-lying Landau levels in both $K'$ and $K$ valleys, which are unoccupied. For many years, there has been an impressive progress on visual odometry applied to mobile robots and drones. However, the visual perception is still in the spotlight as a challenging field because the vision sensor has some problems in obtaining correct scale information with a monocular camera and also is vulnerable to a situation in which illumination is changed. In this paper, UWB sensor fusion is proposed in the visual inertial odometry algorithm as a solution to mitigate this problem. We designed a cost function based on mutual information considering the UWB. Considering the characteristic of the UWB signal model, where the uncertainty increases as the distance between the UWB anchor and the tag increases, we introduced a new residual term to the cost function. When the experiment was conducted in an indoor environment with the above methodology, the initialization problem in an environment with few feature points was solved through the UWB sensor fusion, and localization became robust. Exploring an unknown environment without colliding with obstacles is one of the essentials of autonomous vehicles to perform diverse missions such as structural inspections, rescues, deliveries, and so forth. Therefore, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are fast, agile, and have high degrees of freedom, have been widely used. However, previous approaches have two limitations: a) First, they may not be appropriate for exploring large-scale environments because they mainly depend on random sampling-based path planning that causes unnecessary movements. b) Second, they assume the pose estimation is accurate enough, which is the most critical factor in obtaining an accurate map. In this paper, to explore and map unknown large-scale environments rapidly and accurately, we propose a novel exploration method that combines the pre-calculated Peacock Trajectory with graph-based global exploration and active loop-closing. Because the two-step trajectory that considers the kinodynamics of UAVs is used, obstacle avoidance is guaranteed in the receding-horizon manner. In addition, local exploration that considers the frontier and global exploration based on the graph maximizes the speed of exploration by minimizing unnecessary revisiting. In addition, by actively closing the loop based on the likelihood, pose estimation performance is improved. The proposed method's performance is verified by exploring 3D simulation environments in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods. Aiming at developing high thermal conductivity copper/diamond composite, an unconventional approach applying self-assembled monolayer (SAM) prior to the high-temperature sintering of copper/diamond composite was utilized to enhance the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) between copper and diamond. The enhancement was first systematically confirmed on a model interface system by detailed SAM morphology characterization and TBC measurements. TBC significantly depends on the SAM coverage and ordering, and the formation of high-quality SAM promoted the TBC to 73 MW/m^2-K from 27 MW/m^2-K, the value without SAM. With the help of molecular dynamics simulations, the TBC enhancement was identified to be determined by the number of SAM bridges and the overlap of vibrational density of states. The diamond particles of 210 {\micro\metre} in size were simultaneously functionalized by SAM with the condition giving the highest TBC in the model system and sintered together with the copper to fabricate isotropic copper/diamond composite of 50% volume fraction. The measured thermal conductivity marked 711 W/m-K at room temperature, the highest value among the ones with similar diamond-particles volume fraction and size. This work demonstrates a novel strategy to enhance the thermal conductivity of composite materials by SAM functionalization.

We study the formation of singularity for the Euler-Poisson system equipped with the Boltzmann relation, which describes the dynamics of ions in an electrostatic plasma. In general, it is known that smooth solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic equations fail to exist globally in time. We establish criteria for $C^1$ blow-up of the Euler-Poisson system, both for the isothermal and pressureless cases. In particular, our blow-up condition for the presureless model does not require that the gradient of velocity is negatively large. In fact, our result particularly implies that the smooth solutions can break down even if the gradient of initial velocity is trivial. Coupling emitters with nanoresonators is an effective strategy to control light emission at the subwavelength scale with high efficiency. Low-loss dielectric nanoantennas hold particular promise for this purpose, owing to their strong Mie resonances. Herein, we explore a highly miniaturized platform for the control of emission based on individual subwavelength Si nanospheres (SiNSs) to modulate the directional excitation and exciton emission of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs). A modified Mie theory for dipole-sphere hybrid systems is derived to instruct the optimal design for desirable modulation performance. Controllable forward-to-backward intensity ratios are experimentally validated in 532 nm laser excitation and 635 nm exciton emission from a monolayer WS2. Versatile light emission control along all device orientations is achieved for different emitters and excitation wavelengths, benefiting from the facile size control and isotropic shape of SiNSs. Simultaneous modulation of excitation and emission via a single SiNS at visible wavelengths significantly improves the efficiency and directivity of TMD exciton emission and leads to the potential of multifunctional integrated photonics. Overall, our work opens promising opportunities for nanophotonics and polaritonic systems, enabling efficient manipulation, enhancement and reconfigurability of light-matter interactions.

In moir\'e crystals formed by stacking van der Waals (vdW) materials, surprisingly diverse correlated electronic phases and optical properties can be realized by a subtle change in the twist angle. Here, we discover that phonon spectra are also renormalized in MoS$_2$ twisted bilayers, adding a new perspective to moir\'e physics. Over a range of small twist angles, the phonon spectra evolve rapidly due to ultra-strong coupling between different phonon modes and atomic reconstructions of the moir\'e pattern. We develop a new low-energy continuum model for phonons that overcomes the outstanding challenge of calculating properties of large moir\'e supercells and successfully captures essential experimental observations. Remarkably, simple optical spectroscopy experiments can provide information on strain and lattice distortions in moir\'e crystals with nanometer-size supercells. Fabricating van der Waals (vdW) bilayer heterostructures (BL-HS) by stacking the same or different two-dimensional (2D) layers, offers a unique physical system with rich electronic and optical properties. Twist-angle between component layers has emerged as a remarkable parameter that can control the period of lateral confinement, and nature of the exciton (Coulomb bound electron-hole pair) in reciprocal space thus creating exotic physical states including moir\'e excitons. In this review article, we focus on opto-electronic properties of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor twisted BL-HS. We look at existing evidence of moir\'e excitons in localized and strongly correlated states, and at nanoscale mapping of moir\'e superlattice and lattice-reconstruction. Localization is one of the most important technologies needed to use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in actual fields. Currently, most UAVs use GNSS to estimate their position. Recently, there have been attacks that target the weaknesses of UAVs that use GNSS, such as interrupting GNSS signal to crash the UAVs or sending fake GNSS signals to hijack the UAVs. To avoid this kind of situation, this paper proposes an algorithm that deals with the localization problem of the UAV in GNSS-denied environments. We propose a localization method, named as BRM (Building Ratio Map based) localization, for a UAV by matching an existing numerical map with UAV images. The building area is extracted from the UAV images. The ratio of buildings that occupy in the corresponding image frame is calculated and matched with the building information on the numerical map. The position estimation is started in the range of several km^2 area, so that the position estimation can be performed without knowing the exact initial coordinate. Only freely available maps are used for training data set and matching the ground truth. In van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by stacking two monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, multiple exciton resonances with highly tunable properties are formed and subject to both vertical and lateral confinement. We investigate how a unique control knob, the twist angle between the two monolayers, can be used to control the exciton dynamics. We observe that the interlayer exciton lifetimes in $\text{MoSe}_{\text{2}}$/$\text{WSe}_{\text{2}}$ twisted bilayers (TBLs) change by one order of magnitude when the twist angle is varied from 1$^\circ$ to 3.5$^\circ$. Using a low-energy continuum model, we theoretically separate two leading mechanisms that influence interlayer exciton radiative lifetimes. The shift to indirect transitions in the momentum space with an increasing twist angle and the energy modulation from the moir\'e potential both have a significant impact on interlayer exciton lifetimes. We further predict distinct temperature dependence of interlayer exciton lifetimes in TBLs with different twist angles, which is partially validated by experiments. While many recent studies have highlighted how the twist angle in a vdW TBL can be used to engineer the ground states and quantum phases due to many-body interaction, our studies explore its role in controlling the dynamics of optically excited states, thus, expanding the conceptual applications of "twistronics".

The properties of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are drastically altered by a tunable moir\'e superlattice arising from periodic variations of atomic alignment between the layers. Exciton diffusion represents an important channel of energy transport in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). While early studies performed on TMD heterobilayers have suggested that carriers and excitons exhibit long diffusion lengths, a rich variety of scenarios can exist. In a moir\'e crystal with a large supercell size and deep potential, interlayer excitons may be completely localized. As the moir\'e period reduces at a larger twist angle, excitons can tunnel between supercells and diffuse over a longer lifetime. The diffusion length should be the longest in commensurate heterostructures where the moir\'e superlattice is completely absent. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate that the moir\'e potential impedes interlayer exciton diffusion by comparing a number of WSe2/MoSe2 heterostructures prepared with chemical vapor deposition and mechanical stacking with accurately controlled twist angles. Our results provide critical guidance to developing 'twistronic' devices that explore the moir\'e superlattice to engineer material properties.

Epitaxial growth of single crystalline noble metals on dielectric substrates has received tremendous attention recently due to their technological potentials as low loss plasmonic materials. Currently there are two different growth approaches, each with its strengths and weaknesses. One adopts a sophisticated molecular beam epitaxial procedure to grow atomically smooth epitaxial Ag films. However, the procedure is rather slow and becomes impractical to grow films with thickness > 50 nm. Another approach adopts a growth process using rapid e-beam deposition which is capable of growing single crystalline Ag films in the thick regime (> 300 nm). However, the rapid growth procedure makes it difficult to control film thickness precisely, i.e., the method is not applicable to growing thin epitaxial films. Here we report a universal approach to grow atomically smooth epitaxial Ag films with precise thickness control from a few monolayers to the optically thick regime, overcoming the limitations of the two aforementioned methods. In addition, we develop an in-situ growth of aluminum oxide as the capping layer which exhibits excellent properties protecting the epitaxial Ag films. The performance of the epitaxial Ag films as a function of the film thickness is investigated by directly measuring the propagation length of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) as well as their device performance to support a waveguide plasmonic nanolaser in infrared incorporating an InGaAsP quantum well as the gain media.

In van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by stacking two monolayer semiconductors, lattice mismatch or rotational misalignment introduces an in-plane moir\'e superlattice. While it is widely recognized that a moir\'e superlattice can modulate the electronic band structure and lead to novel transport properties including unconventional superconductivity and insulating behavior driven by correlations, its influence on optical properties has not been investigated experimentally. We present spectroscopic evidence that interlayer excitons are confined by the moir\'e potential in a high-quality MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayer with small rotational twist. A series of interlayer exciton resonances with either positive or negative circularly polarized emission is observed in photoluminescence, consistent with multiple exciton states confined within the moir\'e potential. The recombination dynamics and temperature dependence of these interlayer exciton resonances are consistent with this interpretation. These results demonstrate the feasibility of engineering artificial excitonic crystals using vdW heterostructures for nanophotonics and quantum information applications.

Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are formed at K and K' points at the boundary of the Brillouin zone. They acquire a valley degree of freedom, which may be used as a complementary platform for information transport and processing. In a different context, metasurfaces consisting of engineered arrays of polarizable inclusions have enabled the manipulation of light in unprecedented ways, and found applications in imaging, optical information processing, and cloaking. Here, we demonstrate that, by coupling a MoS2 monolayer to a suitably designed metasurface consisting of asymmetric grooves, valley polarized excitons can be sorted and spatially separated even at room temperature. Emission from valley excitons is also separated in K-space, i.e., photons with opposite helicity are emitted to different directions. Our work demonstrates that metasurfaces can facilitate valley transport and establish an interface between valleytronic and photonic devices, thus addressing outstanding challenges in the nascent field of valleytronics.
