Paludiculture (crop cultivation on wet peatlands) is an effective means to reduce carbon emissions and nutrient losses from formerly drained peatlands. However, methane (CH4) emissions and associated pathways may vary substantially between paludicultures, depending on the cultivated paludicrop. Whereas many studies have investigated diffusive CH4 emissions from paludicrops, large uncertainties exist in relation to the importance of CH4 ebullition, species-specific differences and seasonal dynamics. In this study we aimed to quantify CH4 emissions from stands of three paludicrop species, namely Typha latifolia, Typha angustifolia and Azolla filiculoides. CH4 diffusive fluxes - including plant-mediated emissions - and ebullitive fluxes were studied year-round on a rewetted former agricultural peatland in The Netherlands. Additionally, we tested the effect of irrigation strategy (water table depth) and nutrient loading on CH4 emissions from stands of both Typha species. Diffusive CH4 emissions were lowest from A. filiculoides stands (average 15.4 ± 6.6 mg m-2 d-1), followed by open water (36.4 ± 6.0 mg m-2 d-1). Substantially higher diffusive emissions were measured for both Typha species, with the highest emissions in T. latifolia (187.0 ± 29.4 mg m-2 d-1). Ebullitive fluxes were generally low (< 100 mg m-2 d-1), but the highest ebullitive fluxes occurred in the A. filiculoides stand, contributing 79 % on average to its total CH4 emissions. A water table just below the peat surface substantially reduced Typha CH4 emissions, but also led to lower biomass production, compared to a flooded (+20 cm) water table. Nutrient loading increased biomass production and did not affect diffusive CH4 emissions. Our results underline that species choice substantially affects paludiculture carbon dynamics in the first phase after establishment. Quantifying both diffusive and ebullitive fluxes is of paramount importance in adequately assessing paludiculture CH4 fluxes.

Abstract Objectives To date, no study provides a comprehensive analysis of traumatic orbital floor fractures across the United States. We aimed to characterize patient demographics, injury‐related variables, and operative management in this population. Method The National Trauma Data Bank was queried for open or closed orbital floor fractures from 2008 to 2016. Clinical data were extracted. Results Overall, 148,592 orbital floor fractures were identified, with 142,577 (95.9%) closed‐ and 6158 (4.1%) open‐type fractures. A total of 106,243 (71.5%) patients were male and the median patient age was 41 years. The majority of patients (79.2%) had abbreviated injury scale scores of ≤2, indicating minor/moderate injury. Fracture mechanism of injury (MOI) differed by gender, with the most frequent being unarmed fights in men (34.3%) and falls in women (14.0%). There were 29,600 patients (19.9%) with isolated orbital floor (I‐OF) fractures. The MOI most strongly associated with operative intervention of with I‐OF fractures were penetrating injuries caused by a firearm (odds ratio [OR]: 2.91; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.62–5.20) and cuttings/piercings (OR: 2.17; 95% CI: 1.29–3.65). Conclusion This large epidemiological study reveals that orbital floor fractures tend to present with minor or moderate injuries and are more likely to require operative intervention in setting of firearm or cut/pierce injuries.

Abstract Background Breastfeeding provides the optimal nutrition for infants and offers numerous benefits for both mother and child. The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life and the introduction of complementary feeding between the fifth and seventh months of life. There is a discrepancy between breastfeeding recommendations and the actual duration of breastfeeding. The aim of this study was to analyse breastfeeding behaviour in primiparous women in order to be able to provide support for mothers. Methods In this prospective, questionnaire-based study conducted between 2020 and 2022, primiparous women were asked to complete three questionnaires at three defined survey time points (routine prepartum presentation, postpartum hospitalization, completed sixth month of life). Results A total of 140 women were included and returned all three questionnaires. Fifty-eight percent performed breastfeeding exclusively at least until their baby had reached the age of 6 months, whereas 20% already stopped within the first 6 months. The main reasons given for early cessation were insufficient milk supply and inadequate infant weight gain. A comprehensive level of prepartum knowledge had a significant positive effect on participants’ sense of confidence with breastfeeding. Sociodemographic factors such as age and educational level were also associated with breastfeeding behaviour, but significant corresponding differences in the duration of breastfeeding were not observed. Objective To perform a systematic review of the literature evaluating clinical characteristics and management of cervical ganglioneuromas (CGNs). Data Sources PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. Data such as patient demographics, imaging, and treatments were obtained. Review Methods Pertinent studies were downloaded, and the full text was reviewed by 4 authors (N.P., S.S., C.F., D.T.). Results were reported via the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses). Results Fifty-two studies with 58 patients were identified in the literature. Of the 58 patients, 22 were adults and 36 were pediatric. The most common reported location of CGN was within the parapharyngeal space (76%), followed by the retropharyngeal (19%) and paravertebral/prevertebral (7%) spaces. The most common presenting symptoms included a nontender mass (29.3%), dysphagia (17.2%), and hoarseness (10.3%). Interestingly, the average tumor volume for patients with postoperative Horner’s syndrome was 183 mm 3 (n = 21, 47.7%) vs 946 mm 3 in patients without Horner’s syndrome (n = 23, 52.3%). This represents a statistically significant finding ( P = .018). There exists no significant difference in tumor volumes between adult and pediatric patients with Horner’s syndrome ( P = .645). Conclusion CGN is a rare tumor of the sympathetic nervous system. Management should involve complete surgical excision with biopsy. We found that patients with small-volume CGNs are significantly more likely to experience postoperative Horner’s syndrome. This finding is independent of age and should therefore be taken into consideration in any patient with suspected CGN.

Estimating annual CO2 budgets on drained peatlands is important in understanding the significance of CO2 emissions from peatland degradation and evaluating the effectiveness of mitigation techniques. The closed-chamber technique is widely used in combination with gap-filling of CO2 fluxes by parameter fitting empirical models of ecosystem respiration (Reco) and gross primary production (GPP). However, numerous gap-filling strategies are available which are suitable for different circumstances and can result in large variances in annual budget estimates. Therefore, a need for guidance on the selection of gap-filling methodology and its influence on the results exists. Here, we propose a framework of gap-filling methods with four Tiers following increasing model complexity at structural and temporal levels. Tier one is a simple parameter fitting of basic empirical models on an annual basis. Tier two adds structural complexity by including extra environmental factors such as grass height, groundwater level and drought condition. Tier three introduces temporal complexity by separation of annual datasets into seasons. Tier four is a campaign-specific parameter fitting approach, representing highest temporal complexity. The methods were demonstrated on two chamber-based CO2 flux datasets, one of which was previously published. Performance of the empirical models were compared in terms of error statistics. Annual budget estimates were indirectly validated with carbon export values. In conclusion, different gap-filling methodologies gave similar annual estimates but different intra-annual CO2 fluxes, which did not affect the detection of the treatment effects. The campaign-wise gap-filling at Tier four gave the best model performances, while Tier three seasonal gap-filling produced satisfactory results throughout, even under data scarcity. Given the need for more complete carbon balances in drained peatlands, our four-Tier framework can serve as a methodological guidance to the handling of chamber-measured CO2 fluxes, which is fundamental in understanding emissions from degraded peatlands and its mitigation. The performance of models on intra-annual data should be validated in future research with continuous measured CO2 flux data.

Biological nitrogen (N) fixation is an important process supporting primary production in ecosystems, especially in those where N availability is limiting growth, such as peatlands and boreal forests. In many peatlands, peat mosses (genus Sphagnum) are the prime ecosystem engineers, and like feather mosses in boreal forests, they are associated with a diverse community of diazotrophs (N2-fixing microorganisms) that live in and on their tissue. The large variation in N2 fixation rates reported in literature remains, however, to be explained. To assess the potential roles of habitat (including nutrient concentration) and species traits (in particular litter decomposability and photosynthetic capacity) on the variability in N2 fixation rates, we compared rates associated with various Sphagnum moss species in a bog, the surrounding forest and a fen in Sweden. We found appreciable variation in N2 fixation rates among moss species and habitats, and showed that both species and habitat conditions strongly influenced N2 fixation. We here show that higher decomposition rates, as explained by lower levels of decomposition-inhibiting compounds, and higher phosphorous (P) levels, are related with higher diazotrophic activity. Combining our findings with those of other studies, we propose a conceptual model in which both species-specific traits of mosses (as related to the trade-off between rapid photosynthesis and resistance to decomposition) and P availability, explain N2 fixation rates. This is expected to result in a tight coupling between P and N cycling in peatlands.

En el Hemisferio Sur las turberas almacenan grandes cantidades de carbono en el suelo. A pesar de su importancia en el ciclo global del carbono, se sabe poco acerca de los procesos de descomposición y su diversidad fúngica. El presente estudio se realizó para describir la composición de hongos filamen - tosos en dos profundidades de una turbera compacta donde las especies vegetales predominantes son Astelia (Asteliaceae) y Donatia (Donatiaceae) en Moat, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. De 48 muestras procesadas, se obtuvieron 338 aislamientos. Mediante el uso de diferentes metodologías de cultivo, a través de observación microscópica y por métodos moleculares identificamos 38 especies fúngicas y 18 géneros de Ascomycetes y Zygomycetes. Los aislamientos de Ascomycetes fueron los más abundantes, con dominancia de Penicillium y Trichoderma . Se describe la composición fúngica y se comparó la diversidad y equitatividad de las especies a dos profundidades de muestreo. No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre la composición de especies, la diversidad y equitatividad. La turbera estudiada es un ecosistema que presenta alta diversidad de especies fúngicas filamentosas, algunas de ellas descritas en otras turberas en todo el mundo.

Growing evidence suggests a key role for RNA binding proteins (RBPs) in genome stability programs. Additionally, recent developments in RNA sequencing technologies, as well as mass-spectrometry techniques, have greatly expanded our knowledge on protein-RNA interactions. We here use full transcriptome sequencing and label-free LC/MS/MS to identify global changes in protein-RNA interactions in response to etoposide-induced genotoxic stress. We show that RBPs have distinct binding patterns in response to genotoxic stress and that inactivation of the RBP regulator module, p38/MK2, can affect the entire spectrum of protein-RNA interactions that take place in response to stress. In addition to validating the role of known RBPs like Srsf1, Srsf2, Elavl1 in the genotoxic stress response, we add a new collection of RBPs to the DNA damage response. We identify Khsrp as a highly regulated RBP in response to genotoxic stress and further validate its role as a driver of the G(1/)S transition through the suppression of Cdkn1a(P21) transcripts. Finally, we identify KHSRP as an indicator of overall survival, as well as disease free survival in glioblastoma multiforme.

Peat forming Sphagnum mosses are able to prevent the dominance of vascular plants under ombrotrophic conditions by efficiently scavenging atmospherically deposited nitrogen (N). N-uptake kinetics of these mosses are therefore expected to play a key role in differential N availability, plant competition, and carbon sequestration in Sphagnum peatlands. The interacting effects of rain N concentration and exposure time on moss N-uptake rates are, however, poorly understood. We investigated the effects of N-concentration (1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 µM), N-form ((15)N-ammonium or nitrate) and exposure time (0.5, 2, 72 h) on uptake kinetics for Sphagnum magellanicum from a pristine bog in Patagonia (Argentina) and from a Dutch bog exposed to decades of N-pollution. Uptake rates for ammonium were higher than for nitrate, and N-binding at adsorption sites was negligible. During the first 0.5 h, N-uptake followed saturation kinetics revealing a high affinity (Km 3.5-6.5 µM). Ammonium was taken up 8 times faster than nitrate, whereas over 72 hours this was only 2 times. Uptake rates decreased drastically with increasing exposure times, which implies that many short-term N-uptake experiments in literature may well have overestimated long-term uptake rates and ecosystem retention. Sphagnum from the polluted site (i.e. long-term N exposure) showed lower uptake rates than mosses from the pristine site, indicating an adaptive response. Sphagnum therefore appears to be highly efficient in using short N pulses (e.g. rainfall in pristine areas). This strategy has important ecological and evolutionary implications: at high N input rates, the risk of N-toxicity seems to be reduced by lower uptake rates of Sphagnum, at the expense of its long-term filter capacity and related competitive advantage over vascular plants. As shown by our conceptual model, interacting effects of N-deposition and climate change (changes in rainfall) will seriously alter the functioning of Sphagnum peatlands.
