In the cuprate superconductors, the spatial coherence of the charge density wave (CDW) state grows rapidly below a characteristic temperature $T_\mathrm{CDW}$, the nature of which is debated. We have combined a set of x-ray scattering techniques to study La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_{4}$ ($T_\mathrm{CDW}$~$\approx$~80\,K) to shed light on this discussion. We observe the emergence of a crystal structure, which is consistent with the CDW modulation in symmetry, well above $T_\mathrm{CDW}$. This global structural change also induces strong fluctuations of local atomic disorder in the intermediate temperature region. At $T_\mathrm{CDW}$, the temperature dependence of this structure develops a kink, while the atomic disorder is minimized. We find that the atomic relaxation dynamics cross over from a cooperative to an incoherent response at $T_\mathrm{CDW}$. These results reveal a rich interplay between the CDWs and atomic fluctuations of distinct spatio-temporal scales. For example, the CDW coherence is enhanced on quasi-elastic timescales by incoherent atomic relaxation.

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, $D$-meson, $B$-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $f_+(0)$ arising in the semileptonic $K \to \pi$ transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio $f_K/f_\pi$ and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ and $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the $B_K$ parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four $B$ parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $m_c$ and $m_b$ as well as those for the decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters of charmed and bottom mesons and baryons. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$. We consider nucleon matrix elements, and review the determinations of the axial, scalar and tensor bilinears, both isovector and flavor diagonal. Using lattice QCD, we calculate the twist-2 contribution $a_2$ to the third Mellin moment of the spin structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$ in the nucleon. In addition we evaluate the twist-3 contribution $d_2$. Our computations make use of $N_f=2+1$ gauge field ensembles generated by the Coordinated Lattice Simulations (CLS) effort. Neglecting quark-line disconnected contributions we obtain as our best estimates $a_2^{(p)}= 0.069(17)$, $d_2^{(p)}= 0.0105(68)$ and $a_2^{(n)}= 0.0068(88)$, $d_2^{(n)}= -0.0009(70)$ for the proton and the neutron, respectively, where we use the normalizations given in Eqs. (58) and (59). While the $a_2$ results have been converted to the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme using three-loop perturbation theory, the numbers for $d_2$ are given in the regularization independent momentum subtraction (RI$^\prime$-MOM) scheme, i.e., the conversion has been performed only in tree-level perturbation theory. The $d_2$ results can be interpreted as corresponding to a transverse color Lorentz force on a quark in a transversely polarized proton of size $F^{(u)} = 116(61)$ MeV/fm and $F^{(d)} = -38(66)$ MeV/fm for $u$ and $d$ quarks, respectively. Charmonium-like resonances and bound states with isospin zero and $J^{PC}=0^{++},~1^{--},~2^{++},~3^{--}$ are extracted on the lattice. Coupled $D\bar D$ and $D_s\bar D_s$ scattering suggests three charmonium-like states with $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ in addition to $\chi_{c0}(1P)$: a so far unobserved $D\bar D$ bound state just below threshold, a conventional resonance likely related to $\chi_{c0}(3860)/\chi_{c0}(2P)$ and a narrow resonance just below the $D_s\bar D_s$ threshold with a large coupling to $D_s\bar D_s$ likely related to $X(3915)/\chi_{c0}(3930)$. One-channel $D\bar D$ scattering renders resonances and bound states with $J^{PC}= 1^{--},~2^{++},~3^{--}$ related to the observed conventional charmonia. The Sodium iodide Active Background Rejection Experiment-South (SABRE-South) is a direct dark matter detector soon to be deployed in the Stawell gold mine, in Victoria, Australia. Monitoring of external environmental and experimental conditions, (temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, high voltage, and seismic vibration) is vital to ensure the data quality of the SABRE search for dark matter via direct detection. These parameters are generally non-time-critical in the range of Hz to a few kHz and constitute a slow control system. We present the design of a novel compact, industrial-grade, and self-contained slow control system for SABRE-South. This system, featuring innovative hardware and software architecture based on National instruments compact RIO (NI-cRIO) and LabVIEW can be scaled up at low-cost and is capable of implementing the functionalities available in high-end SCADA systems while maintaining the flexibility to integrate custom software code (i.e. C++, PYTHON) for bespoke interfacing needs., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures

We present the nonperturbative computation of renormalization factors in the RI'-(S)MOM schemes for the QCD gauge field ensembles generated by the CLS (coordinated lattice simulations) effort with three flavors of nonperturbatively improved Wilson (clover) quarks. We use ensembles with the standard (anti-)periodic boundary conditions in the time direction as well as gauge field configurations with open boundary conditions. Besides flavor-nonsinglet quark-antiquark operators with up to two derivatives we also consider three-quark operators with up to one derivative. For the RI'-SMOM scheme results we make use of the recently calculated three-loop conversion factors to the modified minimal subtraction scheme. We present the first lattice investigation of coupled-channel $D\bar D$ and $D_s\bar D_s$ scattering in the $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ channels. The scattering matrix for partial waves $l=0,2$ and isospin zero is determined using multiple volumes and inertial frames via L\"uscher's formalism. Lattice QCD ensembles from the CLS consortium with $m_{\pi}\simeq280$ MeV, $a \simeq 0.09 $ fm and $L/a=24,~32$ are utilized. The resulting scattering matrix suggests the existence of three charmonium-like states with $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ in the energy region ranging from slightly below $2m_D$ up to 4.13 GeV. We find a so far unobserved $D\bar D$ bound state just below threshold and a $D\bar D$ resonance likely related to $\chi_{c0}(3860)$, which is believed to be $\chi_{c0}(2P)$. In addition, there is an indication for a narrow $0^{++}$ resonance just below the $D_s\bar D_s$ threshold with a large coupling to $D_s\bar D_s$ and a very small coupling to $D\bar D$. This resonance is possibly related to the narrow $X(3915)$/$\chi_{c0}(3930)$ observed in experiment also just below $D_s\bar D_s$. The partial wave $l=2$ features a resonance likely related to $\chi_{c2}(3930)$. We work with several assumptions, such as the omission of $J/\psi\omega$, $\eta_c\eta$ and three-particle channels. The intermetallic Gd2PdSi3 has recently generated a lot of excitement after reports that it hosts chiral magnetic nano-skyrmions despite its centrosymmetric crystal structure. Using magnetic-field-dependent polarized resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS), we find than an unexpected incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) appears below the ordering transition with a wavevector equal to that of the magnetic textures. Furthermore, we show these incommensurate magnetic textures in Gd2PdSi3 are highly anisotropic, with the vast majority of the spin modulation lying within the hexagonal ab-plane. This observation is not compatible with the previously suggested non-coplanar magnetic textures and coplanar alternatives are discussed. Our results thus refute the interpretation of the observed large anomalous Hall and Nernst effects in Gd2PdSi3 as arising from topologically-nontrivial magnetic skyrmions., Comment: We have recently collected new measurements which conflict the main claims of this paper. We show how complex modulated order can spontaneously emerge when magnetic interactions compete in a metal with polar lattice distortions. Combining neutron and resonant x-ray scattering with symmetry analysis, we reveal that the spin reorientation in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is mediated by a magnetic cycloid whose eccentricity evolves smoothly but rapidly with temperature. We find the cycloid to be highly sensitive to magnetic fields, which appear to continuously generate higher harmonic modulations. We study the magnetic structure of the "stuffed" (Tb-rich) pyrochlore iridate Tb$_{2+x}$Ir$_{2-x}$O$_{7-y}$, using resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS). In order to disentangle contributions from Tb and Ir magnetic sublattices, experiments were performed at the Ir $L_3$ and Tb $M_5$ edges, which provide selective sensitivity to Ir $5d$ and Tb $4f$ magnetic moments, respectively. At the Ir $L_3$ edge, we found the onset of long-range ${\bf k}={\bf 0}$ magnetic order below $T_{N}^\text{Ir}\sim$ 71 K, consistent with the expected signal of all-in all-out (AIAO) magnetic order. Using a single-ion model to calculate REXS cross-sections, we estimate an ordered magnetic moment of $\mu_{5d}^{\text{Ir}} \approx 0.34(3)\,\mu_B$ at 5 K. At the Tb $M_5$ edge, long-range ${\bf k}={\bf 0}$ magnetic order appeared below $\sim40$ K, also consistent with an AIAO magnetic structure on the Tb site. Additional insight into the magnetism of the Tb sublattice is gleaned from measurements at the $M_5$ edge in applied magnetic fields up to 6 T, which is found to completely suppress the Tb AIAO magnetic order. In zero applied field, the observed gradual onset of the Tb sublattice magnetisation with temperature suggests that it is induced by the magnetic order on the Ir site. The persistence of AIAO magnetic order, despite the greatly reduced ordering temperature and moment size compared to stoichiometric Tb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$, for which $T_{N}^{\text{Ir}} =130$ K and $\mu_{5d}^{\text{Ir}}=0.56\,\mu_B$, indicates that stuffing could be a viable means of tuning the strength of electronic correlations, thereby potentially offering a new strategy to achieve topologically non-trivial band crossings in pyrochlore iridates., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We examine the magnetic ordering of UN and of a closely related nitride, U2N3, by preparing thin epitaxial films and using synchrotron x-ray techniques. The magnetic configuration and subsequent coupling to the lattice are key features of the electronic structure. The well-known antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering of UN is confirmed, but the expected accompanying distortion at Tn is not observed. Instead, we propose that the strong magneto-elastic interaction at low temperature involves changes in the strain of the material. These strains vary as a function of the sample form. As a consequence, the accepted AF configuration of UN may be incorrect. In the case of cubic a-U2N3, no single crystals have been previously prepared, and we have determined the AF ordering wave-vector. The AF Tn is close to that previously reported. In addition, resonant diffraction methods have identified an aspherical quadrupolar charge contribution in U2N3 involving the 5f electrons; the first time this has been observed in an actinide compound.

We present a lattice QCD study of charmonium resonances and bound states with $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ and $3^{--}$ near the open-charm threshold, taking into account their strong transitions to $\bar DD$. Vector charmonia are the most abundant in the experimentally established charmonium spectrum, while recently LHCb reported also the first discovery of a charmonium with likely spin three. The $\bar DD$ scattering amplitudes for partial waves $l=1$ and $l=3$ are extracted on the lattice by means of the L\"uscher formalism, using multiple volumes and inertial frames. Parameterizations of the scattering amplitudes provide masses and widths of the resonances, as well as the masses of bound states. CLS ensembles with 2+1 dynamical flavors of non-perturbatively $O(a)$ improved Wilson quarks are employed with $m_\pi\simeq 280$ MeV, a single lattice spacing of $a\simeq0.086$ fm and two lattice spatial extents of $L=24$ and $32$. Two values of the charm quark mass are considered to examine the influence of the position of the $\bar{D}D$ threshold on the hadron masses. For the lighter charm quark mass we find the vector resonance $\psi(3770)$ with mass $m=3780(7)$ MeV and coupling $g=16.0(^{+2.1}_{-0.2})$ (related to the width), both consistent with their experimental values. The vector $\psi(2S)$ appears as a bound state with $m=3666(10)$ MeV. The charmonium resonance with $J^{PC}=3^{--}$ is found at $m=3831(^{+10}_{-16})$ MeV, consistent with the $X(3842)$ recently discovered by LHCb. At our heavier charm-quark mass the $\psi(2S)$ as well as the $\psi(3770)$ are bound states and the $X(3842)$ remains a resonance. We stress that all quoted uncertainties are only statistical, while lattice spacing effects and the approach to the physical point still need to be explored. This study of conventional charmonia sets the stage for more challenging future studies of unconventional charmonium-like states., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures. Nonlinear interactions between x-rays and long wavelengths can be used as a powerful atomic scale probe for light-matter interactions and for properties of valence electrons. This probe can provide novel microscopic information in solids that existing methods cannot reveal, hence to advance the understanding of many phenomena in condensed matter physics. However, thus far, reported x-ray nonlinear effects were very small and their observations required tremendous efforts. Here we report the observation of unexpected strong nonlinearities in parametric down-conversion (PDC) of x-rays to long wavelengths in gallium arsenide (GaAs) and in lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystals, with efficiencies that are about 4 orders of magnitude stronger than the efficiencies measured in any material studied before. These strong nonlinearities cannot be explained by any known theory and indicate on possibilities for the development of a new spectroscopy method that is orbital and band selective. In this work we demonstrate the ability to use PDC of x-rays to investigate the spectral response of materials in a very broad range of wavelengths from the infrared regime to the soft x-ray regime., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures

X-ray magnetic critical scattering measurements and specific heat measurements were performed on the perovskite iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We find that the magnetic interactions close to the N\'{e}el temperature $T_N$ = 283.4(2) K are three-dimensional. This contrasts with previous studies which suggest two-dimensional behaviour like Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Violation of the Harris criterion ($d\nu>2$) means that weak disorder becomes relevant. This leads a rounding of the antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_N$, and modifies the critical exponents relative to the clean system. Specifically, we determine that the critical behaviour of Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is representative of the diluted 3D Ising universality class., Comment: Accepted in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter

Polarization-dependent photon spectroscopy (dichroism) using signal-enhancing superchiral beams is shown to be sensitive to magnetic properties of the sample, whereas previous investigations explored charge-like electronic properties of chiral samples. In the process of unveiling the potential to observe magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), we underline an affinity between spectroscopies using the Borrmann effect, twisted beams and superchiral beams. Use of an effective wavevector in a quantum-mechanical theory unites the aforementioned spectroscopies and vastly improves our understanding of their advantages. Exploiting an effective wavevector for superchiral beams, natural circular dichroism (NCD) is derived from electric dipole - magnetic dipole (E1-M1) and electric dipole - electric quadrupole (E1-E2) absorption events, and MCD is derived from electric quadrupole-electric quadrupole (E2-E2) absorption. Signal enhancement by superchiral beams is a straightforward gain for the user because NCD and MCD are otherwise precisely the same as for a circularly polarized beam, according to our calculations. Our analysis shows that enhancement of E2-E2 is superior to that available for parity-odd events under consideration. Electronic degrees of freedom in all dichroic signals are encapsulated in atomic multipoles that are frequently used in theoretical interpretations of several established experimental techniques.

It has been observed in multiple lattice determinations of isovector axial and pseudoscalar nucleon form factors, that, despite the fact that the partial conservation of the axialvector current is fulfilled on the level of correlation functions, the corresponding relation for form factors (sometimes called the generalized Goldberger-Treiman relation in the literature) is broken rather badly. In this work we trace this difference back to excited state contributions and propose a new projection method that resolves this problem. We demonstrate the efficacy of this method by computing the axial and pseudoscalar form factors as well as related quantities on ensembles with two flavors of improved Wilson fermions using pion masses down to 150 MeV. To this end, we perform the $z$-expansion with analytically enforced asymptotic behaviour and extrapolate to the physical point.

The nature of resonances and excited states near decay thresholds is encoded in scattering amplitudes, which can be extracted from single-particle and multiparticle correlators in finite volumes. Lattice calculations have only recently reached the precision required for a reliable study of such correlators. The distillation method represents a significant improvement insofar as it simplifies quark contractions and allows one to easily extend the operator basis used to construct interpolators. We present preliminary results on charmonium bound states and resonances on the Nf=2+1 CLS ensembles. The long term goal of our investigation is to understand the properties of the X resonances that do not fit into conventional models of quark-antiquark mesons. We tune various parameters of the distillation method and the charm quark mass. The orbital contribution to the magnetic moment of the transition metal ion in the isostructural weak ferromagnets ACO$_3$ (A=Mn,Co,Ni) and FeBO$_3$ was investigated by a combination of first-principles calculations, non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A non-trivial evolution of the orbital moment as a function of the $3d$ orbitals filling is revealed, with an anomalously large value found in the Co member of the family. Here, the coupling between magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom produced by the spin-orbit interaction results in a large single-ion anisotropy and a peculiar magnetic-moment-induced electron cloud distortion, evidenced by the appearance of a subtle scattering amplitude at space group-forbidden reflections and significant magnetostrictive effects. Our results, which complement a previous investigation on the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction across the series, highlight the importance of spin-orbit coupling in the physics of weak ferromagnets and prove the ability of modern first-principles calculations to predict the properties of materials where the Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction is a fundamental ingredient of the magnetic Hamiltonian., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures

The chemical and magnetic structures of the series of compounds Ca$_{2-x}$La$_x$RuO$_4$ [$x = 0$, $0.05(1)$, $0.07(1)$, $0.12(1)$] have been investigated using neutron diffraction and resonant elastic x-ray scattering. Upon La doping, the low temperature S-Pbca space group of the parent compound is retained in all insulating samples [$x\leq0.07(1)$], but with significant changes to the atomic positions within the unit cell. These changes can be characterised in terms of the local RuO$_6$ octahedral coordination: with increasing doping the structure, crudely speaking, evolves from an orthorhombic unit cell with compressed octahedra to a quasi-tetragonal unit cell with elongated ones. The magnetic structure on the other hand, is found to be robust, with the basic $k=(0,0,0)$, $b$-axis antiferromagnetic order of the parent compound preserved below the critical La doping concentration of $x\approx0.11$. The only effects of La doping on the magnetic structure are to suppress the A-centred mode, favouring the B mode instead, and to reduce the N\'{e}el temperature somewhat. Our results are discussed with reference to previous experimental reports on the effects of cation substitution on the $d^4$ Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, as well as with regard to theoretical studies on the evolution of its electronic and magnetic structure. In particular, our results rule out the presence of a proposed ferromagnetic phase, and suggest that the structural effects associated with La substitution play an important role in the physics of the system., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

5d transition metal oxides offer new opportunities to test our understanding of the interplay of correlation effects and spin-orbit interactions in materials in the absence of a single dominant interaction. The subtle balance between solid-state interactions can result in new mechanisms that minimize the interaction energy, and in material properties of potential use for applications. We focus here on the 5d transition metal oxide NaOsO3, a strong candidate for the realization of a magnetically driven transition from a metallic to an insulating state exploiting the so-called Slater mechanism. Experimental results are derived from non-resonant and resonant x-ray single crystal diffraction at the Os L-edges. A change in the crystallographic symmetry does not accompany the metal-insulator transition in the Slater mechanism and, indeed, we find no evidence of such a change in NaOsO3. An equally important experimental observation is the emergence of the (300) Bragg peak in the resonant condition with the onset of magnetic order. The intensity of this space-group forbidden Bragg peak continuously increases with decreasing temperature in line with the square of intensity observed for an allowed magnetic Bragg peak. Our main experimental results, the absence of crystal symmetry breaking and the emergence of a space-group forbidden Bragg peak with developing magnetic order, support the use of the Slater mechanism to interpret the metal-insulator transition in NaOsO3. We successfully describe our experimental results with simulations of the electronic structure and, also, with an atomic model based on the established symmetry of the crystal and magnetic structure., Comment: 6 figures

Lattice simulation of charmonium resonances with non-zero momentum provides additional information on the two-meson scattering matrices. However, the reduced rotational symmetry in a moving frame renders a number of states with different $J^P$ in the same lattice irreducible representation. The identification of $J^P$ for these states is particularly important, since quarkonium spectra contain a number of states with different $J^P$ in a relatively narrow energy region. We observe and explain theoretically a dramatic evolution of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the series of isostructural weak ferromagnets, MnCO$_3$, FeBO$_3$, CoCO$_3$ and NiCO$_3$. The sign of the interaction is encoded in the phase of x-ray magnetic diffraction amplitude, observed through interference with resonant quadrupole scattering. We find very good quantitative agreement with first-principles electronic structure calculations, reproducing both sign and magnitude through the series, and propose a simplified `toy model' to explain the change in sign with 3 d shell filling. The model gives a clue for qualitative understanding of the evolution of the DMI in Mott and charge transfer insulators.

We report on our studies of the renormalization of flavor singlet quark bilinear operators in lattice QCD. The renormalization constants are determined non-perturbatively using gauge field ensembles with Nf=2 dynamical clover improved fermions. The renormalization is performed in the RI'-MOM scheme. The difference between flavor singlet and non-singlet quark bilinear operators is a disconnected contribution, which has to be evaluated by stochastic estimators. Selective optical excitation of a substrate lattice can drive phase changes across hetero-interfaces. This phenomenon is a non-equilibrium analogue of static strain control in heterostructures and may lead to new applications in optically controlled phase change devices. Here, we make use of time-resolved non-resonant and resonant x-ray diffraction to clarify the underlying physics, and to separate different microscopic degrees of freedom in space and time. We measure the dynamics of the lattice and that of the charge disproportionation in NdNiO3, when an insulator-metal transition is driven by coherent lattice distortions in the LaAlO3 substrate. We find that charge redistribution propagates at supersonic speeds from the interface into the NdNiO3 film, followed by a sonic lattice wave. When combined with measurements of magnetic disordering and of the metal-insulator transition, these results establish a hierarchy of events for ultrafast control at complex oxide hetero-interfaces., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

KH2PO4 (KDP) belongs to the class of hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics, whose paraelectric to ferroelectric phase transition is driven by the ordering of the protons in the hydrogen bonds. We demonstrate that forbidden reflections of KDP, when measured at an x-ray absorption edge, are highly sensitive to the asymmetry of proton configurations. The change of average symmetry caused by the "freezing" of the protons during the phase transition is clearly evidenced. In the paraelectric phase, we identify in the resonant spectra of the forbidden reflections a contribution related to the transient proton configurations in the hydrogen bonds, which violates the high average symmetry of the sites of the resonant atoms. The analysis of the temperature dependence reveals a change of relative probabilities of the different proton configurations. They follow the Arrhenius law, and the activation energies of polar and Slater configurations are 18.6 and 7.3 meV, respectively.

Our result for the second Gegenbauer coefficient is $a_2 = 0.1364(154)(145)$ and for the width parameter $\langle \xi^2 \rangle = 0.2361(41)(39)$. The magnetic critical scattering in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ has been characterized using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) both below and above the 3D antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, T$_{\text{N}}$. The order parameter critical exponent below T$_{\text{N}}$ is found to be \beta=0.195(4), in the range of the 2D XYh$_4$ universality class. Over an extended temperature range above T$_{\text{N}}$, the amplitude and correlation length of the intrinsic critical fluctuations are well described by the 2D Heisenberg model with XY anisotropy. This contrasts with an earlier study of the critical scattering over a more limited range of temperature which found agreement with the theory of the isotropic 2D Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet, developed to describe the critical fluctuations of the conventional Mott insulator La$_2$CuO$_4$ and related systems. Our study therefore establishes the importance of XY anisotropy in the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, the prototypical spin-orbit Mott insulator., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Magnetism - the spontaneous alignment of atomic moments in a material - is driven by quantum-mechanical `exchange' interactions which operate over atomic distances as a result of the fundamental symmetry of electrons. Currently, one of the most active fields of condensed matter physics involves the study of magnetic interactions that cause, or are caused by a twisting of nearby atoms. This can lead to the magnetoelectric effect that couples electric and magnetic properties, and is predicted to play a prominent role in future technology. Here, we discuss the complex relativistic interplay between magnetism and atomic crystal structure in a class of materials called `weak ferromagnets'. The sign of the underpinning Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction has been determined for the first time, by using synchrotron radiation to study iron borate (FeBO3). We present a novel experimental technique based on interference between two x-ray scattering processes (one acts as a reference wave) which we combine with a second unusual approach of turning the atomic antiferromagnetic motif with a small magnetic field. We show that the experimental results provide a clear validation of state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. These experimental and theoretical approaches open up new possibilities for exploring, modelling and exploiting novel magnetic and magnetoelectric materials.

We present the results of a lattice study of light-cone distribution amplitudes (DAs) of the nucleon and negative parity nucleon resonances using two flavors of dynamical (clover) fermions on lattices of different volumes and pion masses down to m_pi = 150 MeV. We find that the three valence quarks in the proton share their momentum in the proportion 37% : 31% : 31%, where the larger fraction corresponds to the u-quark that carries proton helicity, and determine the value of the wave function at the origin in position space, which turns out to be small compared to the existing estimates based on QCD sum rules. Higher-order moments are constrained by our data and are all compatible with zero within our uncertainties. We also calculate the normalization constants of the higher-twist DAs that are related to the distribution of quark angular momentum. Furthermore, we use the variational method and customized parity projection operators to study the states with negative parity. In this way we are able to separate the contributions of the two lowest states that, as we argue, possibly correspond to N*(1535) and a mixture of N*(1650) and the pion-nucleon continuum, respectively. It turns out that the state that we identify with N*(1535) has a very different DA as compared to both the second observed negative parity state and the nucleon, which may explain the difference in the decay patterns of N*(1535) and N*(1650) observed in experiment., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Sr2IrO4 is a prototype of the class of Mott insulators in the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) limit described by a $J_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2$ ground state. In Sr2IrO4, the strong SOI is predicted to manifest itself in the slaving of the canting of the magnetic moments to the correlated rotation by 11.8(1)$^{\circ}$ of the oxygen octahedra that characterizes its distorted layered perovskite structure. Using X-ray resonant scattering at the Ir $L_3$ edge we have measured accurately the intensities of Bragg peaks arising from different components of the magnetic structure. From a careful comparison of integrated intensities of peaks due to basal-plane antiferromagnetism, with those due to b-axis ferromagnetism, we deduce a canting of the magnetic moments of 12.2(8)$^{\circ}$. We thus confirm that in Sr2IrO4 the magnetic moments rigidly follow the rotation of the oxygen octahedra, indicating that, even in the presence of significant non-cubic structural distortions, it is a close realization of the $J_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2$ state, Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

PSR J0205+6449 is a young ({\approx} 5400 years), Crab-like pulsar detected in radio and at X and {\gamma}-ray energies and has the third largest spin-down flux among known rotation powered pulsars. It also powers a bright synchrotron nebula detected in the optical and X-rays. At a distance of {\approx} 3.2 kpc and with an extinction comparable to the Crab, PSR J0205+6449 is an obvious target for optical observations. We observed PSR J0205+6449 with several optical facilities, including 8m class ground-based telescopes, such as the Gemini and the Gran Telescopio Canarias. We detected a point source, at a significance of 5.5{\sigma}, of magnitude i {\approx} 25.5, at the centre of the optical synchrotron nebula, coincident with the very accurate Chandra and radio positions of the pulsar. Thus, we discovered a candidate optical counterpart to PSR J0205+6449. The pulsar candidate counterpart is also detected in the g ({\approx}27.4) band and weakly in the r ({\approx}26.2) band. Its optical spectrum is fit by a power law with photon index {\Gamma}0 = 1.9{\pm}0.5, proving that the optical emission if of non-thermal origin, is as expected for a young pulsar. The optical photon index is similar to the X-ray one ({\Gamma}X = 1.77{\pm}0.03), although the optical fluxes are below the extrapolation of the X-ray power spectrum. This would indicate the presence of a double spectral break between the X-ray and optical energy range, at variance with what is observed for the Crab and Vela pulsars, but similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud pulsar PSR B0540-69., Comment: 13 Pages, 4 Tables, 7 Figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) discovered the time signature of a radio-silent pulsar coincident with RX J0007.0+7302, a plerion-like X-ray source at the centre of the CTA 1 supernova remnant. The inferred timing parameters of the gamma-ray pulsar PSR J0007+7303 (P=315.8 ms; dot{P}\sim3.6 10^{-13} s s^{-1}) point to a Vela-like neutron star, with an age comparable to that of CTA 1. The PSR J0007+7303 low distance (\sim 1.4 kpc), interstellar absorption (A_V\sim 1.6), and relatively high energy loss rate (dot{E} \sim4.5 10^{35} erg s^{-1}), make it a suitable candidate for an optical follow-up. Here, we present deep optical observations of PSR J0007+7303. The pulsar is not detected in the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) images down to a limit of r'\sim 27.6 (3 sigma), the deepest ever obtained for this pulsar, while William Herschel Telescope (WHT) images yield a limit of V \sim 26.9. Our r'-band limit corresponds to an optical emission efficiency \eta_{opt}= L_{opt}/dot{E} < 9.4 10^{-8}. This limit is more constraining than those derived for other Vela-like pulsars, but is still above the measured optical efficiency of the Vela pulsar. We compared the optical upper limits with the extrapolation of the XMM-Newton X-ray spectrum and found that the optical emission is compatible with the extrapolation of the X-ray power-law component, at variance with what is observed, e.g. in the Vela pulsar., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

The magnetic structure and electronic groundstate of the layered perovskite Ba2IrO4 have been investigated using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Our results are compared with those for Sr2IrO4, for which we provide supplementary data on its magnetic structure. We find that the dominant, long-range antiferromagnetic order is remarkably similar in the two compounds, and that the electronic groundstate in Ba2IrO4, deduced from an investigation of the XRMS $L_3/L_2$ intensity ratio, is consistent with a $J_{eff}=1/2$ description. The robustness of these two key electronic properties to the considerable structural differences between the Ba and Sr analogues is discussed in terms of the enhanced role of the spin-orbit interaction in 5d transition metal oxides.

This report presents azimuthal dependent and polarisation dependent x-ray resonant magnetic scattering at the Ir L3 edge for the bilayered iridate compound, Sr3Ir2O7. Two magnetic wave vectors, k1=(1/2,1/2,0) and k2=(1/2,-1/2,0), result in domains of two symmetry-related G-type antiferromagnetic structures, noted A and B, respectively. These domains are approximately 0.02 mm^2 and are independent of the thermal history. An understanding of this key aspect of the magnetism is necessary for an overall picture of the magnetic behaviour in this compound. Azimuthal and polarisation dependence of magnetic reflections, relating to both magnetic wave vectors, show that the Ir magnetic moments in the bilayer compound are oriented along the c axis. This contrasts with single layer Sr2IrO4 where the moments are confined to the ab plane., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We analyze Nf=2 nucleon mass data with respect to their dependence on the pion mass down to mpi = 157 MeV and compare it with predictions from covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (BChPT). A novel feature of our approach is that we fit the nucleon mass data simultaneously with the directly obtained pion-nucleon sigma-term. Our lattice data below mpi = 435 MeV is well described by O(p^4) BChPT and we find sigma=37(8)(6) MeV for the sigma-term at the physical point. Using the nucleon mass to set the scale we obtain a Sommer parameter of r_0=0.501(10)(11) fm., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables.
