DLP printing is a new method for producing zirconia laminates that ensure clinically acceptable gaps in the internal, marginal, and incisal regions. A typical model of a central maxillary incisor was prepped by a dentist and scanned. The laminate was designed using CAD software version 2023. The laminates were fabricated using a milling machine (LSM group) and a DLP printer (LAM group) (N = 20). The gap was evaluated using the silicone replica method at designated measurement points. Statistical analyses were performed. The Shapiro–Wilk and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests indicated a non-normal distribution, and the Mann–Whitney test was used. The LSM group had wider gaps than the LAM group except at point E (59.5 µm). The LAM group had wider gaps than the LSM group, except at points H (51.70 µm). No significant differences were observed between the LSM and LAM groups at any of the labiolingual measurement points. In the mesiodistal plane, a significant difference was observed between the two groups at point G, which was adjacent to the mesial side (p < 0.05). The results of this study indicate that DLP printing offers an innovative approach for producing zirconia laminates, as the incisal, internal, and marginal gaps are within clinically acceptable ranges compared with the AM method. Abstract Background One of the most recent innovations in bone augmentation surgery is represented by computer-aided-design/computer-aided-manufacturing (CAD/CAM) customized titanium meshes, which can be used to restore vertical bone defects before implant-prosthetic rehabilitations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness/reliability of this technique in a consecutive series of cases. Methods Ten patients in need of bone augmentation before implant therapy were treated using CAD/CAM customized titanium meshes. A digital workflow was adopted to design virtual meshes on 3D bone models. Then, Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology was used to produce the titanium meshes, and vertical ridge augmentation was performed according to an established surgical protocol. Surgical complications, healing complications, vertical bone gain (VBG), planned bone volume (PBV), lacking bone volume (LBV), regenerated bone volume (RBV), average regeneration rate (RR) and implant success rate were evaluated. Results All augmented sites were successfully restored with definitive implant-supported fixed partial dentures. Measurements showed an average VBG of 4.5 ± 1.8 mm at surgical re-entry. Surgical and healing complications occurred in 30% and 10% of cases, respectively. Mean values of PBV, LBV, and RBV were 984, 92, and 892 mm3, respectively. The average RR achieved was 89%. All 26 implants were successfully in function after 1 year of follow-up. Conclusions The results of this study suggest that the bone augmentation by means of DMLS custom-made titanium meshes can be considered a reliable and effective technique in restoring vertical bone defects.

This three-dimensional computer-generated implant-planning and surgery has not only enabled accurate preoperative evaluation of the anatomic limitations but has also facilitated preoperative planning of implant positions along with virtual implant placement and subsequently transferring the virtual treatment plans onto the surgical phase via static (guided) or dynamic (navigated) systems aided by CAD/CAM technology. Computerized-implant-dentistry being highly predictable and minimally invasive in nature has also allowed implant placement in patients with medical comorbidities (e.g. radiation therapy, blood dyscrasias), in patients with complex problems following a significant alteration of the bony anatomy as a result of benign or malignant pathology of the jaws or trauma and in patients with other physical and emotional problems. With significant achievements accomplished in the field of computerized implant-dentistry, attempts are now been made toward complete automation of implant-dentistry.

Consumer 3D printers have improved considerably due to the evolution of additive manufacturing. This study aimed to examine the accuracy of consumer printers in dental restoration. Cylindrical patterns mimicking a full crown were created and enlarged from 100% to 105% of the original size. Two types of consumer 3D printers, including a fused deposition modeling (FDM) device and a stereolithography (SLA) device, and two types of dental 3D printers, including a multi-jet device and an SLA device, were used to fabricate the patterns. Then, the outer and inner diameters and depths, and surface roughness of the patterns were measured. The changing rates of the outer diameter of models created using dental printers were significantly smaller than those of the models created using consumer printers ( p < 0.05). Significantly greater surface roughness was obtained in the tooth axis of the model fabricated using the consumer FDM device ( p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed on the surface roughness of both axes between the consumer SLA device and the dental devices ( p > 0.05). However, FDM showed larger surface roughness than dental devices in both axes ( p < 0.05). Thus, the SLA consumer printer can be applied to fabricate resin patterns with enlargement editing of 1-3% along the horizontal axis.
