This article examines the vegetal agency taking place in the novel Western (2005) (Western: A Novel, translated by Betsy Wing in 2009) by contemporary French writer Christine Montalbetti. Building on the cinematographic performativity of the novel itself and on a materialist ecocritical approach, it studies the mobility of plants in this narrative to identify how the cinematographic transmediality contributes to engage the vegetal in the foreground. This analysis allows to feed the characterisation of cinematographic devices in the contemporary novel and to prolong the reflection on nonhuman agency and its presence in literature today.

- Abstract
In this essay, we draft the principal narratives of the mediatic, historiographic and literary discourses about the attack, before focussing on several elements that fiction borrows from the controversy with a testimonial or dramatic aim. Amongst said elements, we analyze how two contemporary novels, El chico de Guernica (Luis Iriondo) and Le héron de Guernica (Antoine Choplin) address the following topics: the destruction range and the inhabitants’ trauma, the responsability of the assault, the operation’s motives (whether Guernica was a military aim or not) and the different aspects that can trigger a symbolic Reading of the air raid., Objet de versions divergentes, le bombardement de Gernika est, aujourd’hui encore, entouré de contradictions.

There are works that carry in themselves the germ of writing; they can draw, in an almost metaliterary game, the theoretical framework and the poetics of the author. This article aims to analyze the evolution of the narrative writing of Mario Vargas Llosa starting from one of his first novels, Aunt Julia and the writer. Although very successful, it has been unfairly considered as a secondary novel within his vast production. The book, however, contains several autobiographical and theoretical elements which are the key to understand the writing process of the author and the idea of novel of the Peruvian-Hispanic writer.

- Abstract
This brief critical narrative was structured to establish a comparative analysis between the film O labyrinth of the faun, by Guilherme Del Toro, and the narrative Space Invaders, by Nona Fernández, from different points of perception about female bodies crossed out by States. Authoritarian. In this critical path, he came across a discursive logic that reveals that both Francoist Spain and Pinochet's dictatorial Chile are the result of the same system of oppression: the colonial matrix of Modernity's power. In addition, it was also discovered that such a matrix of power uses in its project of colonization of knowledge certain aesthetic genres, such as science fiction, against which “local” stories resist., Esta breve narrativa crítica estruturou-se de modo a estabelecer uma análise comparada entre o filme O labirinto do fauno, de Guilherme Del Toro, e a narrativa Space Invaders, de Nona Fernández, a partir de diversos pontos de percepção sobre corpos femininos rasurados por Estados Autoritários.

The proposal of this study is to gather in a text the main ideas presented and discussed during the Research Seminar entitled “Philosophy of Violence: thinking about violence against women” of the University Rey Juan Carlos in Spain. The structure of the work has been developed as follows: initially we present a very significant episode of violence against women's bodies that occurred in Brazil in in 2016. Then, we contextualize, thinking about this violence by describing some actions and academic discussions developed within the study group on contemporary Brazilian literature at the University of Brasilia. Finally, we end with a brief comment on works by contemporary writers who fictionally rework the theme of femicide.

It is seen that Turkish cinema entered a transformation and a new style and form developed with the change and evolution experienced in Turkish cinema in the 1990s and later. The poor and mediocre conditions of the pre-1990 period prepared the ground for change and transformation in the 1990s, and this transformation supported the discovery of directors who adopted independent, modern and contemporary narratives. As one of these directors, Zeki Demirkubuz, who has an important place in Contemporary Turkish Cinema, and his cinematic understanding are examined in the light of contemporary narrative and in the context of its narrative structure, the film Masumiyet (Innocence- 1997) by literature review. In this scientific study, Zeki Demirkubuz's Masumiyet (Innocence- 1997) movie is analyzed in detail in terms of story and discourse, time, space and characters, based on the concept of narrative and its historical movement, narrative theory and narrative structures, basic elements of story and discourse. In addition, similarities and contrasts are determined based on the director's style, style, subjects, themes and characters in his films. In this study, the style and representation of Demirkubuz cinema, which is the reflection of the auteur director approach in Turkish cinema, is explained. Therefore, when the subject is examined in terms of themes and character motifs, it is seen that Demirkubuz has a well-established style in his films. In his films, story time, discourse time and the attitudes and similarities of the characters in this time frame were also determined. Thus, in the context of narrative structure, it has been determined that the director has developed a unique style in his films, and his films contain elements such as a common structure and language. In addition to this, modern life, metropolitan and urban people's stuckness has been explained and conveyed in the context of narrative structure. The present thesis aims to analyze how the relationship between the subject and space, in the no-vels O Filho da Mãe (2009) and Simpatia pelo demônio (2016), by the contemporary writer Ber-nardo Carvalho, explains the conflicts around identity issues. We start from the hypothesis that displacement – whether represented by traffic, the wandering of characters, the crisis and fluidity of identities – brings to the forefront deviant identities that, in various aspects, call into question the crisis of the masculine, challenging heteronormative boundaries and their arrangements within discursive mechanisms. In this sense, Bernardo Carvalho, in these two novels, presents wandering/foreigner characters whose representation revolves around issues of homoeroticism and the demands of desire in different social and geographical contexts. Works analysis from the perspective of homoerotic desire, allowed this articulation between space and non-heteronormative identity to be verified, from a corporeal sociability of the characters, implying, therefore, in a literature open to difference. The methodology of this research, which is bibliogra-phical in nature, includes the theoretical-critical studies formulated by: Stuart Hall (2003/2006/2014), Regina Dalcastagnè (2012), Néstor García Canclini (2016), Michel de Certeau (2014), Tim Cresswell (2006), Doreen Massey (2015), Marc Augé (1994/2006/2010), Judith Bu-tler (2008/2015/2019), Michel Foucault (1981/2010/2014/2018/2019a/2019b/2020), Guacira Lo-pes Louro (2010/2020), among others. Thus, we hope that the results will contribute to the critical fortune of Bernardo Carvalho's fictional work, specifically, on the novels O filho da Mãe and Simpatia pelo demônio. Outro

- Abstract
This article presents an analysis of Veronica's Stigger work, Opisanie Świata (2013), focusing on the construction of this narrative. The discussions are directed, first, around the theories of novel and romance, in order to perceive the characteristics of the narrative that link to these two genres. Then the idea of contemporary, developed by Agamben (2009), will be linked to work at the same time discussing the presence of the narrative in the era of multiplicity, based on the theoretical concepts of Resende (2008). This is a bibliographic research based on the postulates of Bakhtin (2010), Carneiro (2005), Eikhenbaum (1971), Soares (2007), among others. Through the analysis, the text presents the work of Stigger as a hybrid narrative resulting from the merger between romance and novel, and indicates the points that characterize the work as belonging to the era of multiplicity, along with aspects of contemporary idea. - Abstract
An analysis of the tale "Socorrinho", present in the work Angu de sangue (2005), written by Marcelino Freire, aims to demonstrate the way in which the theme of violence, discussed by Michaud (1989) - in the specific case of the tale, that deal with a kidnapping and rape of a girl - is addressed by the author, according to the proposals made by Schollhammer (2000, 2009), Resende (2008), Pereira (2011), Brandileone (2013) and Oliveira (2013) around the Brazilian contemporary narrative. This issue is observed by the narrative focus and time analysis, privileging, thus, the form and content, inseparable elements of the literary work, as advocate Candido (1995) and Jouve (2012). The autodiegetic narrator of Richard Ford’s Frank Bascombe trilogy –The Sportswriter (1986), Independence Day (1995) and The Lay of the Land (2006)– has been labelled by critics and commentators as a US everyman. Likewise, the character itself self-fashions as a common person able to embody significant cultural ideals and myths associated with the culture and history of the United States. Based on these considerations, the present article discusses and questions the representative qualities of this epitome of a mainstream version of Americanness. Frank Bascombe is a white, male, heterosexual, middle-class citizen in a regionally, ethnically and culturally diverse nation. Therefore, his self-assigned role as a common person repeatedly clashes with the social reality of the United States and at the same time leaves him yearning for a strong personality of his own.

The number of literary works dedicated to the Spanish Civil War has been growing recently to the extent that those tragic three years now represent one of the most frequent topics in contemporary literature. In 2009, the Spanish writer Susana Fortes published her novel Waiting for Robert Capa (Esperando a Robert Capa), contributing thus to the long list of titles dealing with the topic of war. Without resigning to a poetic license, the author created a fictitious literary reconstruction of key moments in the lives of two famous photographers, Gerda Taro and Robert Capa, whose snapshot collections are even today recognized as a valid and extensive testimony of everyday life in the period of the Spanish Civil War. This literary reconstruction of real historical events concerning both the lives of the photographers and the Civil War is based on a research into historical studies, texts, written documents and on graphic material in particular. It should be emphasized that in this novel, the photographs are very important. Throughout the story, the novelist constantly makes references to different snapshots taken by Robert Capa, Gerda Taro and other renowned photographers of that time. These references are so detailed that the identification of the alluded pictures is made easy. It is also interesting to analyze how methods normally used in graphic arts are applied on narrative processes, creating numerous visual images that form a background to all that is viewed, experienced or recorded by the protagonists of the novel.

The objective of this work is to reflect on how boredom became an aesthetic artifact in contemporary novels; how authors manage to awaken boredom in the readers arousing fatigue, confusion and other symptoms historically associated with this affect, so they experience an estrangement that forces them to look at the text in a different way than usual. This estrangement requires an interpretative attention that might even become self-reflexive. After briefly reviewing the main manifestations of boredom in Western narrative, we will study how some of the formal experimentations of the historical avant-gardes served as a basis for turning boredom into a literary artifice with which to provoke the readers, whether by recurring to the everydayness, formal complexity of the narrative structure, linguistic density, or the annulment of the plot.

REVISION (Writing process) ,FAIRY tales ,MYTHOLOGY ,STORYTELLING ,METAMORPHOSIS - Abstract
This paper investigates contemporary retellings of traditional fables, myths and history by women writers who critically explore the field of violence depicted in mythic and fairy-tale genres, and history. It is contended that at the core of several contemporary rewriting lies the concept of metamorphosis as illustrated through the Ovidian sense of fluidity, multiplicity and shape-shifting; and through recent reconfigurations by cultural history, storytelling, and postcolonial literature. In the wake of current critical approaches to re-vision and rewriting, special relevance is given to the regenerative presence of past literature in some contemporary re-visions of classical fairy tales, myth and history, where geographical, temporal and mental spaces are perceived as complex cross-cultural zones and migrant points of communications between cultures. The process of retelling is perceived as a subversive gesture of violence against the existing body/corpse of literary and historical canons. Thus, the resulting products replace and yet perform the metaphorical or literal significance of the very acts of violence already inscribed inside them. They point to new cultural and aesthetic ways of rethinking the present and changing the future, imaginatively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This article analyses the vision of women in highly successful novels on the national and international scene in recent years. Taking the analytical method of the Circuit of Culture (Paul du Gay et al., 1997), we explore the different agents of the publishing process, as well as the literary tendencies with more success at the present time; of which we will focus on the model of feminine identity that is shown by the protagonists of books like Millennium (Stieg Larsson), Fifty shades of Gray (E. L. James) or Twilight (Stephenie Meyer). Our main objective is to review the main alternatives that are being provided in this regard. The results show certain advances, especially in fantasy novels.

This article retrieves the work carried out by two research projects based in the “María Saleme de Burnichon” Research Center of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, led by Dr. Pablo Heredia and Dr. Domingo Ighina respectively. These projects continue while redefining work logic that the Southern Cone Study Group has been developing since the early 1990s. For this reason, although the tour will focus on the tasks carried out in the last ten years (collective publications, organization of academic events, conformation of a research program, etc.), the common foundations of both teams will also be reviewed from the direction of Dr. Jorge Torres Roggero. Likewise, sections will be devoted to addressing, succinctly, the choices of the theoretical framework, the challenges, and complexities presented by the object of study and the collective and individual works registered in both research projects., El presente artículo recupera el trabajo realizado por dos proyectos de investigación radicados en el Centro de Investigaciones “María Saleme de Burnichon”, de la Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades, dirigidos respectivamente por el Dr. Pablo Heredia y el Dr. Domingo Ighina.

After a brief exposition of the most important contributions to Film and Literature Theory, our analysis begins by comparing the novel’s prologue to the cinematographic trailer, since both communicative instances function as paratexts. Consequently, we analyze how the influence of script writing can be observed in the narrative construction of the novel. Finally, we study how both the thriller and the western as cinematographic genres are present in the novel, helping to build the character’s language and the development of the story.

This paper will look at the nexus between literature and the visual field with reference to the artist's book, which holds a unique position, wherein it straddles both the visual and literary fields. Using the book as artifact, the visual artist pays tribute to the historical structure of the book, but interprets or modifies the form of the book, in order to create a platform for the artist's own imagery. Often, a response to literature by the visual arts is something that moves away from the original intention of a myth or author, to take on a life of its own. This paper will examine the movement of letterpress away from its historical function and towards fine art. With particular reference to the creation of the artist's book Wolfgirl (2011), the paper will look at the nature of practice-based research within the visual arts. Thus the paper will consider how the use of letterpress enables a refinement of composition that expands the intaglio illustrations, and in turn, how the intaglio prints give character to the imagined world. The paper will also examine how narrative pertaining to wild children, within the canon of myth, furthers our understanding of the evolution of culture. Looking at the notion of the marginal protagonist, it will explore notions of how children at the very margins of society inform and direct our relationship with civilization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Rabbit Is Rich (1981), John Updike's use of Wallace Stevens's “Rabbit as King of the Ghosts” crystallizes what American literature in a (post-)Freudian age is particularly prone: ego is no longer master in his own house. Lacan's observation, therefore, that “[w]hat is realized in my history is not the past definite of what it was .. but the future anterior of what I am in the process of becoming” will serve as a theoretical frame within which to critique the suspect future “interior” of “Rabbit” Angstrom throughout Updike's novel quartet. The sense of sight has been established as the preferred cognitive model in our culture; however, ¿what happens when the visual order seems to be fallible?, ¿what implications and meanings acquires the presence of some eye diseases that generate defective views in the most recent narrative? This paper addresses, from the perspective of gender and cultural studies, the work of several Latin American female writers who have articulated in their narrative different optical disorders as myopia, strabismus or diplopia. From this approach, it is pretended to demonstrate that the repeated presence of eye diseases has configured a literary motive which is directly related to the emergence of a new aesthetic positioning.

- Abstract
The topic discussed by two contemporary Latin-American writers, the Mexican Cristina Rivera Garza and the Guatemalan Rodrigo Rey Rosa, is violence, a recurrent phenomenon in both countries. The genres chosen to express this are: a miscellaneous text with poems, chronicles and essays in Dolerse. Textos desde un pais herido and a novel, a fictional work presented as a historical and autobiographical recount, in El material humano . Rivera Garza believes “writing is a process of production of what is real” and critics present her as an author of “transgressive writing”. Rey Rosa self-exiles from Guatemala for 15 years due to the “violence and social tension” that dominated that country. The author recognizes that his literature at the beginning was abstract, but from 2011 he starts writing about national scenarios with a certain “realistic goal”. The initial purpose of El material humano was an investigation about the fortuitous discovery of millions of documents of the Guatemalan Nacional Police Archive in 2005. The novel also has intertextual reflections, autobiographic information and an enigma to be solved. The historical, political and social violence is transformed into horror, during the war against drugs started in Mexico during Felipe Calderon’s presidency, as well as during the internal war that devastated Guatemala between 1960 and 1996, with the killing of indigenous populations and civilians in urban zones in the 80’s.

The article studies two contemporary novels on the perspective of a political and aesthetical criticism of the so-called globalization on behalf of an economy of the affects. In A maçã envenenada, by Michel Laub, we will discuss the ethical components in the relations between subjectivity and experience. In our reading of O filho da mãe, by Bernardo Carvalho, migrational processes, mobility and closure will be the key issues that will help us inquire the limits and possibilities of the globalized process of living together. Both narratives contribute to insert the literary field in the critical circuits that understand the problems of the affect and the co-existence in a world characterized by “the culture of the money”, as Fredric Jameson once defined, thus enabling the emergence of the “liquid love”, expression used by Zygmunt Bauman to describe the difficulties concerning togetherness in our age. At the end, the article proposes an inquiry on the connections between literary writing and etnography in the world fictionally represented in the two novels investigated.

- Abstract
This article explores the deconstructive function of grotesque elements in contemporary Spanish and Ibero-American Literature. Starting with Tirano Banderas. Novela de Tierra Caliente (1926), a highlight in Valle-Inclan’s esperpento aesthetics, mocking what authors as Bakhtin or Foucault pointed out as “official truths”, both collective and individual. It is argued that grotesque representation establishes a subversive relation when confronted with epic or tragic modes, as established by aristotelic-horatian and dogmatic poetics. This may shed some light on the relation between grotesque structure and critical deconstruction, from the so-called Baroque era up until modernist and postmodernist essay, such as it is the case of one of the most thoroughly sophisticated contemporary writers in Brasil, Silviano Santiago, whose collection of essays O Cosmopolitismo do Pobre (2004) is the third pillar of our analysis.
