The study aimed to determine the effects of two differing amino acid beverage interventions on biomarkers of intestinal epithelial integrity and systemic inflammation in response to an exertional-heat stress challenge. One week after the initial assessment, participants (n = 20) were randomly allocated to complete two exertional-heat stress trials, with at least 1 week washout. Trials included a water control trial (CON), and one of two possible amino acid beverage intervention trials (VS001 or VS006). On VS001 (4.5 g/L) and VS006 (6.4 g/L), participants were asked to consume two 237-ml prefabricated doses daily for 7 days before the exertional-heat stress, and one 237-ml dose immediately before, and every 20 min during 2-hr running at 60% maximal oxygen uptake in 35 °C ambient conditions. A water volume equivalent was provided on CON. Whole blood samples were collected pre-, immediately post-, 1 and 2 hr postexercise, and analyzed for plasma concentrations of cortisol, intestinal fatty acid protein, soluble CD14, and immunoglobulin M (IgM) by ELISA, and systemic inflammatory cytokines by multiplex. Preexercise resting biomarker concentrations for all variables did not significantly differ between trials (p >.05). A lower response magnitude for intestinal fatty acid protein (mean [95% CI]: 249 [60, 437] pg/ml, 900 [464, 1,336] pg/ml), soluble CD14 (−93 [−458, 272] ng/ml, 12 [−174, 197] ng/ml), and IgM (−6.5 [−23.0, 9.9] MMU/ml, −10.4 [−16.2, 4.7] MMU/ml) were observed on VS001 and V006 compared with CON (p <.05), respectively. Systemic inflammatory response profile was lower on VS001, but not VS006, versus CON (p <.05). Total gastrointestinal symptoms did not significantly differ between trials. Amino acid beverages' consumption (i.e., 4.5–6.4 g/L), twice daily for 7 days, immediately before, and during exertional-heat stress ameliorated intestinal epithelial integrity and systemic inflammatory perturbations associated with exercising in the heat, but without exacerbating gastrointestinal symptoms. Strenuous exercise is synonymous with disturbing gastrointestinal integrity and function, subsequently prompting systemic immune responses and exercise-associated gastrointestinal symptoms, a condition established as "exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome." When exercise stress and aligned exacerbation factors (i.e., extrinsic and intrinsic) are of substantial magnitude, these exercise-associated gastrointestinal perturbations can cause performance decrements and health implications of clinical significance. This potentially explains the exponential growth in exploratory, mechanistic, and interventional research in exercise gastroenterology to understand, accurately measure and interpret, and prevent or attenuate the performance debilitating and health consequences of exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome. Considering the recent advancement in exercise gastroenterology research, it has been highlighted that published literature in the area is consistently affected by substantial experimental limitations that may affect the accuracy of translating study outcomes into practical application/s and/or design of future research. This perspective methodological review attempts to highlight these concerns and provides guidance to improve the validity, reliability, and robustness of the next generation of exercise gastroenterology research. These methodological concerns include participant screening and description, exertional and exertional heat stress load, dietary control, hydration status, food and fluid provisions, circadian variation, biological sex differences, comprehensive assessment of established markers of exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome, validity of gastrointestinal symptoms assessment tool, and data reporting and presentation. Standardized experimental procedures are needed for the accurate interpretation of research findings, avoiding misinterpreted (e.g., pathological relevance of response magnitude) and overstated conclusions (e.g., clinical and practical relevance of intervention research outcomes), which will support more accurate translation into safe practice guidelines. This article is part of one of the research chapters of a doctoral thesis and was constructed through bibliographical research. The object of the article is the relationship between the socio-metabolic control of capital and penal selectivity and the aim is to present some reflections on the penal state and its effects on the materialization and expansion of deprivation of liberty. Among the results of these reflections, the presentation of conjunctural factors and political strategies for socio-metabolic control of capital that are sustained in the penal state stands out. Some elements of the COVID-19 health crisis and its expressions in the precarious conditions of prisons are also presented, which are part of the ideological dynamics of capital. Objective: To describe leprosy involvement and physical disability profiles in children and adolescents under 15 years old. Methods: Ecological time series study, based on data from the Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Information System, including new cases of leprosy residing in Palmas (TO), from 2001 to 2020. Results: A total of 471 notified cases in children and adolescents under 15 years of age were evaluated, resulting in a detection coefficient of 26.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. Of these, 52% (n=243) were women, 5% (n=24) corresponded to grade two disability, and 36% (n=168) were diagnosed through spontaneous demand. The temporal trend analysis showed a 0.5% reduction in the detection coefficient. There was a significant decrease in the diagnosis of the undetermined and tuberculoid clinical forms and a significant increase in the dimorphous form. Diagnosis through contact examination increased significantly by 13.1% and that through spontaneous demand decreased by 4.9%. The detection coefficient of cases with grade two disability reduced significantly by 7.4% while those with grade one increased by 16.8%. Conclusions: Despite the downward trend in the detection coefficient in children and adolescents under 15 years of age and in cases with grade two disability, other factors indicate failure in the adequate management of leprosy in Palmas. The article reveals the functionality of the entrepreneurial ideology present in the political formulation of access to work in prison. It is understood that this type of work also suffers the impacts of the new morphology of work. It is argued that mass incarceration is a result of the penal state. It also considers that access to penal labor policies in prison is constituted by contradictions and expropriations of a neoliberal nature. The study concludes that access minimizes the life of the individual deprived of liberty and hides the expropriations that interest capital, thus evidencing the neoliberal logic. The study aimed to determine the impact of a dairy milk recovery beverage immediately after endurance exercise on leukocyte trafficking, neutrophil function, and gastrointestinal tolerance markers during recovery. Male runners (N = 11) completed two feeding trials in randomized order, after 2 hr of running at 70% ..., fluid restricted, in temperate conditions (25 °C, 43% relative humidity). Immediately postexercise, the participants received a chocolate-flavored dairy milk beverage equating to 1.2 g/kg body mass carbohydrate and 0.4 g/kg body mass protein in one trial, and water volume equivalent in another trial. Venous blood and breath samples were collected preexercise, postexercise, and during recovery to determine the leukocyte counts, plasma intestinal fatty acid binding protein, and cortisol concentrations, as well as breath H2. In addition, 1,000 μl of whole blood was incubated with 1 μg/ml Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide for 1 hr at 37 °C to determine the stimulated plasma elastase concentration. Gastrointestinal symptoms and feeding tolerance markers were measured preexercise, every 15 min during exercise, and hourly postexercise for 3 hr. The postexercise leukocyte (mean [95% confidence interval]: 12.7 [11.6, 14.0] x 109/L [main effect of time, MEOT]; p < .001) and neutrophil (10.2 [9.1, 11.5] x 109/L; p < .001) counts, as well as the plasma intestinal fatty acid binding protein (470 pg/ml; +120%; p = .012) and cortisol (236 nMol/L; +71%; p = .006) concentrations, were similar throughout recovery for both trials. No significant difference in breath H2 and gastrointestinal symptoms was observed between trials. The total (Trial x Time, p = .025) and per cell (Trial x Time, p = .001) bacterially stimulated neutrophil elastase release was greater for the chocolate-flavored dairy milk recovery beverage (+360% and +28%, respectively) in recovery, compared with the water trial (+85% and -38%, respectively). Chocolate-flavored dairy milk recovery beverage consumption immediately after exercise prevents the decrease in neutrophil function during the recovery period, and it does not account for substantial malabsorption or gastrointestinal symptoms over a water volume equivalent. The increasing electricity demand has led the conventional distribution system to evolve into the smart grid context. One of the advantages of this intelligent system is the ability to estimate the states of a grid. Implementing a state estimator in distribution networks requires much analysis – such as the observability of an extensive system, big data techniques for data processing, and the use of artificial intelligence to generate predictions and protect the control system against cyber-attacks. This systematic mapping study covers 15148 articles, selecting 37 for further research and discussion. The reports offer different state estimators and techniques to improve performance, for instance, solutions against malicious data, optimal meter allocation, and voltage control. In addition to these topics, this article discusses different approaches to generate pseudo measurements. Probabilistic and deterministic, machine learning, and neural network models appear as a trend. The studies show the main methods used for data collection, offering a trend toward smart meters. Non stent-based local drug delivery with drug-coated balloon (DCB) is an alternative to drug-eluting stent with favorable clinical applicability in the treatment of selected coronary lesions. Our purpose was to report the initial performance, safety and efficacy evaluations of a novel sirolimus-coated balloon in the treatment of coronary lesions. This was a phase I (first-in-man), prospective, multicenter, single-arm trial evaluating the novel SELUTION SLR™ DCB (M.A. Med Alliance SA, Nyon, Switzerland), which incorporates a polymeric microsphere-based technology for controlled and continuous release of sirolimus, in the treatment of de novo or restenotic lesions. A total of 56 patients/lesions were enrolled between November/2018 and March/2019. Diabetes was found in 46.6 %, and de novo lesions represented 79.6 % of cases. Device and procedural/clinical success were 100 % and 96.4 %, respectively. There was only one major adverse cardiac event (target lesion revascularization) reported at late follow-up. By quantitative coronary angiography analysis, mean % diameter stenosis was 30.5 ± 16.7 %, late lumen loss was 0.26 ± 0.45 mm and angiographic binary restenosis occurred in 4 of 45 cases at 6-month angiographic follow-up. Ultramarathon running events and participation numbers have increased progressively over the past three decades. Besides the exertion of prolonged running with or without a loaded pack, such events are often associated with challenging topography, environmental conditions, acute transient lifestyle discomforts, and/or event-related health complications. These factors create a scenario for greater nutritional needs, while predisposing ultramarathon runners to multiple nutritional intake barriers. The current review aims to explore the physiological and nutritional demands of ultramarathon running and provide general guidance on nutritional requirements for ultramarathon training and competition, including aspects of race nutrition logistics. Research outcomes suggest that daily dietary carbohydrates (up to 12 g·kg−1·day−1) and multiple-transportable carbohydrate intake (∼90 g·hr−1 for running distances ≥3 hr) during exercise support endurance training adaptations and enhance real-time endurance performance. Whether these intake rates are tolerable during ultramarathon competition is questionable from a practical and gastrointestinal perspective. Dietary protocols, such as glycogen manipulation or low-carbohydrate high-fat diets, are currently popular among ultramarathon runners. Despite the latter dietary manipulation showing increased total fat oxidation rates during submaximal exercise, the role in enhancing ultramarathon running performance is currently not supported. Ultramarathon runners may develop varying degrees of both hypohydration and hyperhydration (with accompanying exercise-associated hyponatremia), dependent on event duration, and environmental conditions. To avoid these two extremes, euhydration can generally be maintained through "drinking to thirst." A well practiced and individualized nutrition strategy is required to optimize training and competition performance in ultramarathon running events, whether they are single stage or multistage. Malabsorption of fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) in response to prolonged exercise may increase incidence of upper and lower gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS), which are known to impair exercise performance. This case study aimed to explore the impact of a low-FODMAP diet on exercise-associated GIS in a female ultraendurance runner diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, competing in a 6-day 186.7-km mountainous multistage ultramarathon (MSUM). Irritable bowel syndrome symptom severity score at diagnosis was 410 and following a low-FODMAP diet (3.9 g FODMAPs/day) it reduced to 70. The diet was applied 6 days before (i.e., lead-in diet), and maintained during (5.1 g FODMAPs/day) the MSUM. Nutrition intake was analyzed through dietary analysis software. A validated 100-mm visual analog scale quantified GIS incidence and severity. GIS were modest during the MSUM (overall mean ± SD: bloating 27 ± 5 mm and flatulence 23 ± 8 mm), except severe nausea (67 ± 14 mm) experienced throughout. Total daily energy (11.7 ± 1.6 MJ/day) intake did not meet estimated energy requirements (range: 13.9–17.9 MJ/day). Total daily protein [1.4 ± 0.3 g·kg body weight (BW)−1·day−1], carbohydrate (9.1 ± 1.3 g·kg BW−1·day−1), fat (1.1 ± 0.2 g·kg BW−1·day−1), and water (78.7 ± 6.4 ml·kg BW−1·day−1) intakes satisfied current consensus guidelines, except for carbohydrates. Carbohydrate intake during running failed to meet recommendations (43 ± 9 g/hr). The runner successfully implemented a low-FODMAP diet and completed the MSUM with minimal GIS. Acacia spp. are invasive in Southern Europe, and their high propagation rates produce excessive biomass, exacerbating wildfire risk. However, lignocellulosic biomass from Acacia spp. may be utilised for diverse biorefinery applications. In this study, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), high-performance anion-exchange chromatography pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) and lignin content determinations were used for a comparative compositional characterisation of A. dealbata, A. longifolia and A. melanoxylon. Additionally, biomass was treated with three white-rot fungi species (Ganoderma lucidum, Pleurotus ostreatus and Trametes versicolor), which preferentially degrade lignin. Our results showed that the pre-treatments do not significantly alter neutral sugar composition while reducing lignin content. Sugar release from enzymatic saccharification was enhanced, in some cases possibly due to a synergy between white-rot fungi and mild alkali pretreatments. For example, in A. dealbata stems treated with alkali and P. ostreatus, saccharification yield was 702.3 nmol mg−1, which is higher than the samples treated only with alkali (608.1 nmol mg−1), and 2.9-fold higher than the non-pretreated controls (243.9 nmol mg−1). By characterising biomass and pretreatments, generated data creates value for unused biomass resources, contributing to the implementation of sustainable biorefining systems. In due course, the generated value will lead to economic incentives for landowners to cut back invasive Acacia spp. more frequently, thus reducing excess biomass, which exacerbates wildfire risk. Simple Summary: Dogs are known as hosts of Leptospira interrogans and can become asymptomatic carriers of leptospires in the urine, spreading this bacterium to the environment, especially in endemic areas, characterizing a serious public health problem. In this context, vaccination of dogs against leptospirosis is of paramount importance for long-term protection against renal carrier status. A total of 118 dogs were studied for 365 days, separated into Group A (vaccinated, n = 94) and Group B (non-vaccinated, n = 24). Group A was subdivided into three groups: A1 with 32 dogs immunized with the vaccine #1; A2 by 32 dogs with #2; and A3 30 dogs with #3. Serology (MAT and IgG-ELISA) and urinary PCR were conducted. Seroreactivity increased at D15 post-vaccination and, regardless of vaccine brand, remained high up to D180, with antibody switch to IgG after D30. A total of 46.8% of animals from Group A were PCR-positive at least once, in contrast to 75% in Group B, regardless of vaccine brand. This paper presents the development, implementation, and validation of a macro-element suitable for the linear analysis of innovative 3D plug-and-play joints between tubular columns and lightweight steel truss-girders. The macro-element is based on the component method, accounts for the three-dimensional interaction between the tube faces, and its components have a clear physical meaning. Simplified procedures are developed for the closed-form computation of the stiffness matrix of the macro-element based on the geometric and mechanical properties of the nodal zone. This facilitates practical application in everyday design scenarios. Furthermore, the macro-element's architecture is implemented in the framework of OpenSees as a standalone beam-to-column joint finite element. Validation of the conceptual design is accomplished through parametric studies, comparing its performance with models generated in higher-order finite element commercial software, Abaqus. Aim: To develop and validate a questionnaire investigating endurance athletes' carbohydrate beliefs, knowledge, information sources, and other dietary and non‐dietary practices related to exercise‐associated gastrointestinal symptoms. Methods: A questionnaire was developed by a review of relevant literature and sports‐related questionnaires, and input from five experienced sports dietitians. Item construct and format was adapted and modified from a previous questionnaire. The modified questionnaire sought information on demographics, nutrition knowledge, beliefs, intended practices, information sources and exercise‐associated gastrointestinal symptoms. A five‐phase validity process was conducted to determine content, face and construct validity, item difficulty and internal reliability of the questionnaire. The Delphi technique was applied with experts over three anonymous rounds. Items were reviewed to determine whether to keep, modify, or delete, rate the relevance of each item using a content validity index (CVI), and provide comments. A content analysis was conducted on all comments after each round. Online interviews were conducted with a pilot group of endurance athletes (n = 15) to assess item difficulty and feasibility. Nutrition knowledge was compared between pilot group of athletes and experts to determine construct validity and internal consistency. A test‐retest process was applied to a second pilot group (n = 8) to verify questionnaire reliability. Results: High CVI (≥.83) and agreement scores were obtained through the Delphi technique. High reliability (r =.942) and acceptable internal consistency (α =.53‐.78) of the questionnaire were obtained. Participation in ultra-endurance running (UER) events continues to grow across ages, including youth athletes. The 50- and 100-km are the most popular distances among youth athletes. Most youth athletes are between 16–18 years; however, some runners younger than 12 years have successfully completed UER events. Parents, athletes, coaches, race directors, and medical professionals often seek advice regarding the safety of youth athletes participating in these events, especially with regard to potential short and long-term health consequences. UER may impact key organ systems during growth and development. We propose a decision-making process, based on current knowledge and the experience of the consensus group that addresses age regulations, medical and psychological well-being, training status and race-specific factors (such as distance, elevation change, remoteness, ambient temperatures, level of medical assistance, and type of provisions provided by the race organizers) to use until evidence of long-term consequences of UER in youth athletes is available. Wet sour gas pipelines are subjected to corrosion deterioration mechanisms resulting from interactions between the fluid and piping material. Acid gases, condensation rates, water chemistry, and temperature are the key factors in determining the corrosivity of sour gas streams. This work investigated the corrosion risk of a new wet gas pipeline through laboratory experiments and corrosion modeling. The tests were carried out in Hastelloy autoclave rotating cage system used to generate controlled dynamic conditions inside the reactor to mimic the environment inside the pipeline. The results showed high bottom of the line corrosion (BLC) rate reaching 38.9 mpy (0.99 mm/year), while the measured pitting rate was 17 mpy (0.43 mm/year). The corrosion modeling results showed a severe BLC rate exceeding 200 mpy (5.08 mm/year). The observed high BLC was attributed to the absence of bicarbonate which led to a low pH of 3.9. At this pH, the formation of stable iron sulfide is unlikely. Top of the line corrosion (TLC) rate was observed to be moderate reaching up to 7.8 mpy (0.20 mm/year). This is mainly because of the low condensation rate and formation of a protective iron sulfide layer, which confirmed that iron sulfide scale characteristics are the main factor influencing the TLC rate in sour environments. The expected threshold concentration required of bicarbonate to show some reducing effect on the corrosion rate and pH based on historical data analysis and predictive modeling of real-field conditions is discussed in this work. Objectives: Researchers have begun delivering mindfulness and aerobic exercise training concurrently on the premise that a combination intervention will yield salutary outcomes over and above each intervention alone. An estimate of the effect of combination training on chronic psychosocial stress in a nonclinical population has not been established. The objective of this study was to establish protocol feasibility in preparation of a definitive RCT targeting healthy individuals, and to explore the preliminary effect of combination training on reducing chronic psychosocial stress in this population. Methods: Twenty-four participants were allocated to a single-arm pre-post study and subjected to 16 weeks of concurrent mindfulness psychoeducation and aerobic exercise training. Feasibility criteria were collected and evaluated. Within-group changes in chronic psychosocial stress, mindfulness, emotion regulation, and cardiorespiratory fitness were also assessed. Primary analyses were based on 17 participants. Results: Retention rate, response rate, recruitment rate, and sample size analyses indicate a definitive trial is feasible for detecting most effects with precision. There was also a decline in our primary dependent measure of chronic psychosocial stress (dpretest = −0.56, 95% CI [ −1.14,−0.06]). With regard to secondary measures, there was an increase in the use of cognitive reappraisal, and a reduction in use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. We are insufficiently confident to comment on changes in mindfulness and aerobic capacity V ̇ O 2 max . However, there were subgroup improvements in aerobic economy at submaximal exercise intensities. Conclusions: We recommend a definitive trial is feasible and should proceed. Aim: To describe changes in gingival recession (GR) at buccal and palatal sites in adults over an average follow‐up of 4 years. Materials and methods: Baseline data were obtained from a multistage probabilistic representative sample of 1023 individuals aged ≥35 years from Porto Alegre, Brazil. Buccal and palatal/lingual GR were analysed. Results: 402 individuals (6,862 teeth) were followed. At baseline, 3,356 (48.9%) teeth did not have GR at the buccal site and 1206 developed the condition overtime (incidence =35.9%; 95% CI 32.6‐38.9). Percentage of incident teeth was higher among individuals with (42.3%) than those without (29.5%) periodontitis stages III/IV. Also, 38.5% of teeth with proximal attachment loss at follow‐up had incident GR compared to 7.6% of those without proximal attachment loss. Incidence of palatal GR was observed in 32.5% of teeth (95% CI 29.7‐35.3). Mean buccal and palatal/lingual GR incidence was 2.11 mm and 2.33 mm, whereas buccal and palatal/lingual GR progression equalled 0.40 mm and 0.48 mm. The prevalence of GR ≥3 mm increased in individuals with (from 35.9% to 47.4%) and without (from 25.2 to 41.5%) periodontitis. The main objective is to establish a formula that determines, for each particular situation, if the centreline joint model may be used or if an explicit model, which although more accurate is also more complex, is required. Accordingly, in order to circumvent the need to analyze the full frame and to avoid the shortcomings of empirical procedures we derive simplified classification criteria (SCC) based on the stiffness of the joint components. By applying these SCC to a given RCBC joint, it is classified either as semi‐rigid, meaning that an explicit model is required, or as nominally rigid otherwise. The determination of the parameters that are required by the SCC is fully discussed. The presented example illustrates the application of the developed SSC to particular RCBC joints, showing that its results are mainly confirmed by the analysis of the full frame to which they pertain. Background: Pregnancy in all animal species requires special care and attention. During this period there is great variation in hematological and biochemical parameters. Many times these parameters are misinterpreted as being obtained from nonpregnant animals with unknown parasite status. Objective: To characterize the hematological, biochemical, and parasitological values within the peripartum period of Santa Ines sheep naturally infected. Methods: For this purpose, 45 ewes were used, with an average body weight of 50 kg. Data were collected during pregnancy, birth and, lactation. Measurements included body weight, body condition score (BCS), evaluation of conjunctive staining, and collection of blood and feces. Results: All variables changed throughout physiological stages. Weight and BCS were different between periods (p<0.05). Fecal egg counts (FEC) were higher in the peripartum period, with a predominance of Haemonchus ssp, 92.85%. Mean hematological and biochemical values varied throughout the study, (p>0.05). Conclusion: The influence of peripartum on the parameters studied should be considered and its use as a reference value. Exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome (EIGS) is a common characteristic of exercise. The causes appear to be multifactorial in origin, but stem primarily from splanchnic hypoperfusion and increased sympathetic drive. These primary causes can lead to secondary outcomes that include increased intestinal epithelial injury and gastrointestinal hyperpermeability, systemic endotoxemia, and responsive cytokinemia, and impaired gastrointestinal function (i.e. transit, digestion, and absorption). Impaired gastrointestinal integrity and functional responses may predispose individuals, engaged in strenuous exercise, to gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS), and health complications of clinical significance, both of which may have exercise performance implications. There is a growing body of evidence indicating heat exposure during exercise (i.e. exertional-heat stress) can substantially exacerbate these gastrointestinal perturbations, proportionally to the magnitude of exertional-heat stress, which is of major concern for athletes preparing for and competing in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. To date, various hydration and nutritional strategies have been explored to prevent or ameliorate exertional-heat stress associated gastrointestinal perturbations. The aims of the current review are to comprehensively explore the impact of exertional-heat stress on markers of EIGS, examine the evidence for the prevention and (or) management of EIGS in relation to exertional-heat stress, and establish best-practice nutritional recommendations for counteracting EIGS and associated GIS in athletes preparing for and competing in Tokyo 2020. Selective laser sintering (SLS) is one of the most well-regarded additive manufacturing (AM) sub-processes, whose popularity has been increasing among numerous critical and demanding industries due to its capabilities, mainly manufacturing parts with highly complex geometries and desirable mechanical properties, with potential to replace other, more expensive, conventional processes. However, due to its various underlying multi-physics phenomena, the intrinsic complexity of the SLS process often hampers its industrial implementation. Such limitation has motivated academic interest in obtaining better insights into the process to optimize it and attain the required standards. In that regard, the usual experimental optimization methods are time-consuming and expensive and can fail to provide the optimal configurations, leading researchers to resort to computational modeling to better understand the process. The main objective of the present work is to develop a computational model capable of simulating the SLS process for polymeric applications, within an open-source framework, at a particle-length scale to assess the main process parameters' impact. Following previous developments, virgin and used polymer granules with different viscosities are implemented to better represent the actual process feedstock. The results obtained agree with the available experimental data, leading to a powerful tool to study, in greater detail, the SLS process and its physical parameters and material properties, contributing to its optimization. • A mixed model was built to assess the effect of liver fluke on carcass weight of cattle. • The carcass weight of non-infected cattle is higher than that of infected cattle. • Differences in carcass weights were observed mostly at younger ages (up to 30 months). • The difference observed in the 23–30 month age range was estimated as 6.34 kg. • Carcasses with liver fluke also had worse conformation scores and poorer fat scores. Although fasciolosis is a relatively common disease, the productive and economic losses resulting from cattle with chronic fasciolosis are unclear. This paper aims to investigate the effect of fasciolosis on the parameters of carcass quality and discuss the hypothesis that the effects on weight differ among age ranges of cattle. For this, we analysed abattoir data of 30,151 bovines, from 928 farms, slaughtered in Uruguay in 2016, of which 33.9% (95% confidence interval (CI): 27.3–41.1%) had Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke). A mixed model was built to assess whether the effect of fasciolosis on weight differs depending on the age range, using the interaction term 'age* F. hepatica '. The effect on the carcass parameters was tested using a proportional logistic regression. The interaction of age and F. hepatica was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Differences in carcass weights between infected and non-infected animals were observed mostly at younger ages (up to 30 months), with the highest difference observed in the 23–30 months age range (estimated marginal mean difference of 6.34 kg). Overall, the presence of F. hepatica was positively associated with poor conformations and lower fat scores of carcasses (P < 0.001). The carcasses of cattle infected with F. hepatica had 0.16 times greater odds of having worse conformation scores than carcasses of cattle without F. hepatica (proportional odds ratio (POR) = 1.16; 95% CI: 1.07–1.26). Similarly, carcasses of cattle with F. hepatica had 0.30 times (POR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.23–1.39) greater odds of having poorer fat scores than carcasses of cattle without F. hepatica. Background and Aims The cultivation of dedicated biomass crops, including miscanthus, on marginal land provides a promising approach to the reduction of dependency on fossil fuels. However, little is known about the impact of environmental stresses often experienced on lower-grade agricultural land on cell-wall quality traits in miscanthus biomass crops. In this study, three different miscanthus genotypes were exposed to drought stress and nutrient stress, both separately and in combination, with the aim of evaluating their impact on plant growth and cell-wall properties. Methods Automated imaging facilities at the National Plant Phenomics Centre (NPPC-Aberystwyth) were used for dynamic phenotyping to identify plant responses to separate and combinatorial stresses. Harvested leaf and stem samples of the three miscanthus genotypes (Miscanthus sinensis , Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Miscanthus × giganteus) were separately subjected to saccharification assays, to measure sugar release, and cell-wall composition analyses. Key Results Phenotyping showed that the M. sacchariflorus genotype Sac-5 and particularly the M. sinensis genotype Sin-11 coped better than the M. × giganteus genotype Gig-311 with drought stress when grown in nutrient-poor compost. Sugar release by enzymatic hydrolysis, used as a biomass quality measure, was significantly affected by the different environmental conditions in a stress-, genotype- and organ-dependent manner. A combination of abundant water and low nutrients resulted in the highest sugar release from leaves, while for stems this was generally associated with the combination of drought and nutrient-rich conditions. Cell-wall composition analyses suggest that changes in fine structure of cell-wall polysaccharides, including heteroxylans and pectins, possibly in association with lignin, contribute to the observed differences in cell-wall biomass sugar release. Conclusions The results highlight the importance of the assessment of miscanthus biomass quality measures in addition to biomass yield determinations and the requirement for selecting suitable miscanthus genotypes for different environmental conditions. As the urban world population grows steadily, cities have become the main habitat for human beings. Against this backdrop, city quality or the level of development of the city's habitat that ensures the satisfaction of objective and subjective human needs become a matter of growing interest and concern for academics, policy makers, and citizens. Building on a resource‐based view of city quality, the aim of this paper is twofold. First, it proposes and validates scales for six city sub‐habitats: political, economic, social, natural, artificial, and technological. Second, it tests a model and the underlying hypothesis about the ranking of those sub‐habitats and of the perceived controversy regarding decision making upon them. For those purposes, a survey of 768 city inhabitants was conducted in Portugal to measure city quality and their sub‐habitats. Both the predicted ranking of importance of the sub‐habitats and the perceived ranking of controversy were empirically validated. The results constitute a novel and important contribution to understand city quality and its sub‐habitats, whose conceptual power relies on hierarchized factors linked to citizens' happiness and to the level of controversy of the solutions. A detailed delineation of flood-prone areas over large regions represents a challenge that cannot be easily solved with today's resources. The main limitations lie in algorithms and hardware, but also costs, scarcity and sparsity of data and our incomplete knowledge of how inundation events occur in different river floodplains. We showcase the implementation of a data-driven web application for regional analyses and detailed (i.e., tens of meters) mapping of floodplains, based on (a) the synthesis of hydrogeomorphic features into a morphological descriptor and (b) its classification to delineate flood-prone areas. We analysed the skill of the descriptor and the performance of the mapping method for European rivers. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a carbohydrate (CHO) and protein (PRO) drink consumed immediately after endurance exercise on saliva antimicrobial proteins known to be important for host defense. Eleven male runners ran for 2 hr at 75% VO2max on 2 occasions and immediately postexercise were provided, in randomized order, either a placebo solution (CON) or a CHO-PRO solution containing 1.2 g CHO/kg body mass (BM) and 0.4 g PRO/kg BM (CHO-PRO). The solutions were flavor and volume equivalent (12 ml/kg BM). Saliva flow rate, lysozyme, α-amylase, and secretory (S) IgA concentrations were determined from unstimulated saliva samples collected preexercise, immediately postexercise, and every 30 min until 180 min postexercise. CHO-PRO ingestion immediately postexercise resulted in a lower saliva flow rate than with CON at 30 and 60 min postexercise. Saliva lysozyme concentration increased immediately postexercise in both trials compared with preexercise (p< .05), and CHO-PRO ingestion immediately postexercise resulted in a higher saliva lysozyme concentration in the first hour of recovery than with CON (125% greater at 30 min, 94% greater at 60 min; p< .01). Saliva SIgA concentration decreased below preexercise concentrations 90–150 min postexercise (p< .001), with no effect of CHO-PRO. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of immediate and 1-hr-delayed carbohydrate (CHO) and protein (PRO) feeding after prolonged exercise on leukocyte trafficking, bacterially stimulated neutrophil degranulation, saliva secretory IgA (S-IgA) responses, and circulating stress hormones. In randomized order, separated by 1 wk, 9 male runners completed 3 feeding interventions after 2 hr of running at 75% VO2max. During control (CON), participants received water (12 ml/kg body mass [BM]) immediately and 1 hr postexercise. During immediate feeding (IF), participants received a CHO-PRO solution equal to 1.2 g CHO/kg BM and 0.4 g PRO/kg BM immediately postexercise and water 1 hr postexercise. During delayed feeding (DF), participants received water immediately postexercise and CHO-PRO solution 1 hr postexercise. Unstimulated saliva and venous blood samples were collected preexercise, immediately postexercise, and every 20 min until 140 min postexercise. No significant interactions were observed for circulating leukocytes and T-lymphocyte subset counts, S-IgA secretion rate, or plasma cortisol, epinephrine, or norepinephrine concentration. Bacterially stimulated neutrophil degranulation decreased during recovery on CON and DF (24% and 31%, respectively, at 140 min; p < .01) but not on IF. Compared with CON, neutrophil degranulation was higher on IF at 100 min postexercise and higher on IF than DF at 80 min and 100 min onward postexercise (p < .05). Ingestion of a CHO-PRO solution immediately after, but not 1 hr after, prolonged strenuous exercise prevented the decrease in neutrophil degranulation but did not alter circulating stress hormone, leukocyte trafficking, or S-IgA responses. Further research should identify the independent effect of different quantities of CHO and PRO ingestion during recovery on neutrophil responses and other aspects of immune function. The conventional no-slip boundary condition does not always hold in several fluid flow applications and must be replaced with appropriate slip conditions according to the wall and fluid properties. However, not only slip boundary conditions are still a subject of discussion among fluid dynamicists, but also their numerical treatment is far from being well-developed, particularly in the context of very high-order accurate methods. The complexity of these conditions significantly increases when the boundary is not aligned with the chosen coordinate system and, even more challenging, when the fluid slips along a curved boundary. The present work proposes a simple and efficient numerical treatment of general slip boundary conditions on arbitrary curved boundaries for three-dimensional fluid flow problems governed by the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. In that regard, two critical challenges arise: (i) achieving very high-order of convergence with arbitrary curved boundaries for the classical no-slip boundary conditions and (ii) extending the developed numerical techniques to impose general slip boundary conditions. The conventional treatment of curved boundaries relies on generating curved meshes to eliminate the geometrical mismatch between the physical and computational boundaries and achieve high-order of convergence. However, such an approach requires sophisticated meshing algorithms, cumbersome quadrature rules on curved elements, and complex non-linear transformations. In contrast, the reconstruction for off-site data (ROD) method handles arbitrary curved boundaries approximated with linear piecewise elements while employing polynomial reconstructions with specific linear constraints to fulfil the prescribed boundary conditions. For that purpose, the general slip boundary conditions are reformulated on a local orthonormal basis to allow a straightforward application of the ROD method with scalar boundary conditions. The Navier–Stokes equations are discretised with a staggered finite volume method, and the numerical fluxes are computed solely on the polygonal mesh elements. The reliable estimation of the cyclic behaviour of steel beam-to-column joints is essential for the safe design of steel structures under seismic loading. The T-stub is an essential component in steel beam-to-column joints. This paper presents the framework and implementation of a decoupled component model for the T-stub under cyclic loading. This decoupled model splits the single hysteretic spring representation of the T-stub into two separate hysteretic springs, one representing the quadrant where tensile forces are present and the other the quadrant with compressive forces. The results indicate that because of the degradation of the response of the T-stub with multiple loading cycles, the equivalence between the single spring model, and the decoupled double spring model is not trivial. Exact equivalence rules are proposed for the definition of the properties of the decoupled model. The accuracy of the model is validated by comparison with experimental test results. The behaviour of reinforced concrete beam‐column (RCBC) joints may have an important influence on the structural behaviour of unbraced framed structures—this explains why current technical specifications require accounting for their deformation. However, the available numerical models for RCBC joints are rather complex, so that, at the end of the day, these joints are commonly modeled using one of two alternative simplified models: the rigid joint model and the centerline joint model. This calls for the development of "Simplified Classification Criteria", which are simplified procedures to assess the influence of RCBC joints on the structural behaviour, that is, to determine whether a simplified joint model can be employed in the numerical model of the overall structure without leading to major errors in the analysis. This paper focuses on the possibility of using the rigid joint model. As a starting point for the step‐by‐step development of general classification criteria for RCBC joints we employ the basic simplified classification criterion already existing for steel beam‐column joints. Abstract This work presents the experimental assessment of the joint behaviour of five steel beam-to-column end-plate joint configurations to assess (i) the effect of minor axis end plate joints in the behaviour of major axis end plate joints, and (ii) the interaction of two minor axis end plate joints. The experimental tests were performed with true size cruciform sub-frames specimens with boundary conditions intended to simulate unbraced frames. The sub-fames, with one to three beams, were loaded introducing multiple 3D stress states in the column unstiffened web, causing an interaction between the mechanical behaviour of two or three major and minor axis joints. The interactions were assessed in terms of the moment-rotation relations of joints, connections and column web. It was found that, for the slenderness of the column web tested, (i) the minor-axis joints have only a relevant influence on the stiffnesses of the major-axis joints and (ii) that, when two minor axis joints are present, their mutual interation increases both their stiffness and strength. Ultra-endurance activities (≥ 4h) present unique challenges that, beyond fatigue, may be exacerbated by sub-optimal nutrition during periods of increased requirements and compromised gastrointestinal function. The causes of fatigue during ultra-endurance exercise are multi-factorial. However, mechanisms can potentially include central or peripheral fatigue, thermal stress, dehydration, and/or endogenous glycogen store depletion; of which optimising nutrition and hydration can partially attenuate. If exercise duration is long enough (e.g. ≥ 10h) and exercise intensity low enough (e.g. 45-60% of maximal oxygen uptake), it is bio-energetically plausible that ketogenic adaptation may enhance ultra-endurance performance, but this requires scientific substantiation. Conversely, the scientific literature has consistently demonstrated that daily dietary carbohydrates (3-12g/kg/day) and carbohydrate intake (30-110g/h) during ultra-endurance events can enhance performance at individually tolerable intake rates. Considering gastrointestinal symptoms are common in ultra-endurance activities, effective dietary prevention and management strategies may provide functional, histological, systemic, and symptomatic benefits. This study aimed to determine the influence of biological sex on intestinal injury, permeability, gastrointestinal symptoms, and systemic cytokine profile in response to exertional-heat stress. Male (n= 13) and eumenorrheic female (n= 11) endurance runners completed 2 h running at 60% V̇O2max in 35°C. Blood samples were collected pre- and post-exercise and during recovery to determine plasma intestinal fatty-acid binding protein (I-FABP) and systemic cytokine profile. Urinary lactulose:L-rhamnose ratio was used to determine small intestine permeability. I-FABP increased 479% pre- to post-exercise (p< 0.001), with no difference between sexes (p= 0.432). No differences between sexes were observed for small intestine permeability (p= 0.808), gut discomfort, total, upper- and lower-gastrointestinal symptoms. However, males reported significantly higher flatulence (p= 0.049) and abdominal stitch (p= 0.025) compared to females. IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and IL-1ra increased pre- to post-exercise (p< 0.05), with no difference between sexes. However, IL-1β increased post-exercise in males only, and was higher in males compared to females (p= 0.044). Findings suggest that when females are in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, biological sex has no effect on intestinal epithelial injury and permeability, and minimal effect on gastrointestinal symptoms and systemic cytokine profile in response to exertional-heat stress. Abstract In this study, ent -kaurenoic acid derivatives were obtained by microbial transformation methodologies and tested against breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7). A multivariate quantitative-structure activity relationship (QSAR) analysis was performed taking into account both microbial transformation derivatives and other analogues previously reported in literature to give some insight into the main features behind the cytotoxic activity displayed by kaurane-type diterpenes against MCF-7 cells. The partial least square regression (PLS) method was employed in the training set and the best PLS model was built with a factor describing 69.92% of variance and three descriptors (log P , ε HOMO and ε HOMO–1) selected by the Ordered Predictors Selection (OPS) algorithm. The QSAR model provided reasonable regression (Q 2 = 0.64, R 2 = 0.72, SEC = 0.29 and SEV = 0.33). The model was validated by leave- N -out cross-validation, y-randomization and external validation (R 2 pred = 0.89 and SEP = 0.27). The selected descriptors indicated that the activity was mainly related to electronic parameters (HOMO and HOMO-1 molecular orbital energies), as well as to log P. These findings suggest that higher activity values are directly related with both higher log P and frontier orbital energy values. The positive relationship between these orbitals and the activity suggests that the ent -kaurenoic acid analogues interaction with the target involves charge displacement, which is entirely consistent with the literature. Based on these findings, three compounds were proposed and one of them was synthesized and tested. The experimental result confirmed the activity predicted by the model. Abstract Genipa americana L., commonly known as genipap, is a plant with economical and medicinal importance, and a promising source of bioactive compounds. Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins with several biotechnological applications. This study reports the isolation and characterization of a G. americana bark lectin (GaBL). A single chromatographic procedure on Sephacryl S-100 resulted in isolation of GaBL, a protein with native molecular weight of over 200 kDa and pI 4.02, whose hemagglutinating activity was inhibited by lactose and fetuin, not affected by ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+), and stable upon heating (303–393 K) as well as over the pH range 5–10. The highest activity was found at a temperature lower than 333 K and pH 5. The secondary structure was analyzed by circular dichroism and showed a prevalence of beta structures and unordered forms. GaBL was able to partially refold in acidic pH conditions when dissolved in PBS buffer at pH 7.4. In conclusion, GaBL was purified in milligram quantities with high stability against different conditions, and is a new biomaterial with potential biotechnological applications. Objective: This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of the pediatric population with COVID-19 in an Emergency Department (ED) of a Brazilian general hospital. Methods: Epidemiological and clinical data of patients younger than 20 years old were collected from patients’ medical records from February 2020 to July 2021. Most of the epidemiological data described pertains to hospitalized patients. We also reviewed coinfections, treatment, and outcomes and compared the first and second waves of COVID-19. Results: We identified a total of 1303 episodes of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The median time from symptom onset to diagnosis was three days. Symptoms were present in 92.3% of the patients. The most common symptoms were fever (45.2%), nasal congestion/discharge (44.2%), and cough (39.4%). Chest radiography and tomography were performed in 7.7 and 3.3% of cases, with abnormal findings in 29.7 and 53.4%, respectively. Hospital admissions occurred in 3.5% of patients, mainly in the presence of comorbidities, in children under five years old and in those who presented to the ED during the first wave of COVID-19. Coinfection with a viral agent was identified in 20% of the 71 cases tested in this study, and a positive rapid test for Streptococcus pyogenes was found in 8% of the 174 cases tested, with no impact of these coinfections on hospitalization. Conclusions: We found that COVID-19 was a mild disease in most children in our study population, with most hospitalizations and readmissions occurring during the first wave of COVID-19. Abstract: Based on an extensive literature review on intelligent cities, smart cities, and happy cities, and on their conceptual connections with citizens' well‐being, quality of life, and happiness, we developed a resource‐based view on City Quality: the PESNAT (political, economic, social, natural, artificial, and technological) framework. The concept of City Quality rests on the idea of cities interconnected sub‐habitats—PESNAT—which are powerful analytical categories needed for understanding cities as complex and intricate loci. This framework eventually aims at assessing the cities' power to attract businesses and people, to contribute to a sustainable development of the city and an increased quality of life. Furthermore, two hypotheses are outlined regarding the level of importance of each sub‐habitat in relation to happiness, and the level of controversy of each one for citizens, city planners, and decision makers. Accuracy may be dramatically reduced when the boundary domain is curved and numerical schemes require a specific treatment of the boundary condition to preserve the optimal order. In the finite volume context, Ollivier-Gooch and Van Altena (2002) has proposed a technique to overcome such limitation and restore the very high-order accuracy which consists in specific restrictions considered in the least-squares minimization associated to the polynomial reconstruction. The method suffers from several drawbacks, particularly, the use of curved elements that requires sophisticated meshing algorithms. We propose a new method where the physical domain and the computational domain are distinct and we introduce the Reconstruction for Off-site Data (ROD) where polynomial reconstructions are carried out on the mesh using data localized outside of the computational domain, namely the Dirichlet condition situated on the physical domain. A series of numerical tests assess the accuracy, convergence rates, robustness, and efficiency of the new method and show that the boundary condition is fully integrated in the scheme with a very high-order accuracy and the optimal convergence rate is achieved. Background: Histomonas, also known as blackhead, is a protozoan disease caused by Histomonas meleagridis (phylum Parabasalia, class Tritrichomonadea, order Tritrichomonadida, family Dientamoebidae/Protrichomonadinae) and, characterized by enteric and hepatic lesions in several species of domestic and wild gallinaceous. Among the most affected species, turkeys are those with greater morbidity and mortality. Blackhead is the second most important disease caused by protozoa in domestic poultry, affecting especially young birds and causing severe economic losses, with decrease in production, lack of uniformity of lots and costs with treatment and control. Its occurrence must be monitored, especially in large poultry exporting countries, such as Brazil. The aim of this study is to report an outbreak of histomoniasis in Indian peacocks. Case: A peacocks group created together with chickens showed clinical signs characterized by apathy, head down and bruised head, eyes closed, anorexia, yellow or pale stools and death. At necropsy, the cecum showed intense thickening of the wall with irregularity in the serous layer and abundant deposit of friable material, amorphous, yellowish color with areas reddish in the lumen with large number of filiform white parasites from 1 to 1.5 cm in length, morphologically compatible with Heterakis gallinarum. The liver showed large and circular, multifocal, whitish areas that extended towards the parenchyma. Histologically, was observed marked transmural typhlitis, severe proliferation of fibroblasts with multifocal neovascularization, histiocytic infiltrate, giant cell enlargement, bacterial myriads, presence of eosinophilic circulars trophozoites, with 6-20 µm in diameter, morphologically compatible with Histomonas meleagridis. These structures were positive in PAS staining. In the liver, a lesion was characterized by aleatory necrotizing hepatitis with abundant macrophagic and heterophilic infiltrate and some lymphocytes, as well as several foci of necrosis associated with numerous parasitis, intralesional, weakly eosinophilic, PAS-positive structures similar to those observed cecum. Discussion: All aspects observed in this outbreak were characteristic of Histomonas meleagridis infection. This protozoal infection occurs predominantly in turkeys, with high rates of morbidity and mortality, however, can affect chickens, chukar partridges, pheasants and peacocks. Histomoniasis occurs after ingestion of nematode eggs present in the feces of birds and earthworms. In addition, to the intestine and liver, there may be systemic parasitism with lesions in other organs such as kidneys, lungs, spleen and cloacal sac. Overcrowding of animals, the creation and use of chickens to hatch peacocks eggs, as well as the poor hygiene conditions were the main risk factors for the development of the disease. Due to the absence of specific clinical signs, the disease can be easily confused with other disorders. macroscopic and microscopic examinations are recommended to assist in confirming the definitive diagnosis of histomoniasis. Thus, it can be said that H. meleagridis may be cause of mortality in peacocks (Pavo cristatus) created in free system in Rio Grande do Sul, State. The diagnosis of this condition should be considered in cases of mortality in exotic bird breeding, especially when created together with most resistant species such as chickens and other poultry. We propose a new sixth-order finite volume scheme to solve the bidimensional linear steady-state Stokes problem on staggered unstructured meshes and complex geometries. The method is based on several classes of polynomial reconstructions to accurately evaluate the diffusive fluxes, the pressure gradient, and the velocity divergence. The main difficulty is to handle the div-grad duality to avoid numerical locking and oscillations. A new preconditioning technique based on the construction of a pseudo-inverse matrix is also proposed to dramatically reduce the computational effort. Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common malignant primary central nervous system neoplasm in adults. It has a very aggressive natural history with a median overall survival estimated at 14.6 months despite multimodality treatment. Extracranial metastases are very rare with few case reports published to date. We report the case of a 65-year-old male who underwent maximal safe resection for a newly diagnosed brain mass after presentation with new neurologic symptoms. He then received standard postsurgical adjuvant treatment for glioblastoma. Subsequently, he underwent another resection for early progressive disease. Several months later, he was hospitalized for new-onset musculoskeletal complaints. Additional investigation revealed new metastatic osseous lesions which were initially felt to be a new malignancy. The patient opted for supportive care and died 12 days later. Despite choosing no treatment, he elected to undergo a bone biopsy to understand the new underlying process. Results were that of metastatic GBM and were reported after the patient expired. Physicians caring for patients with GBM and new nonneurologic symptoms may contemplate body imaging.
