This article reports the challenges of race and social class in an action research project to facilitate educational change through community collaboration with African American parents, community organizations, and public schools. This project was undertaken in Charlotte, North Carolina to enhance the participation of African American parents in their children's math and science course selection and placement in middle and high school. Focusing on the communities of three high schools and their feeder middle schools, this article reports important lessons and outlines strategic implications for future work in the intersection among African American communities, public schools and education, and universities. This article examines the role of parent involvement--its meaning and effects--among a determined group of African American parents. We focus on some of the characteristics of involvement of a subset of African American parents in a larger program designed to enhance the math and science course selection of middle and high school students. As one of several factors related to school success, our findings confirm the centrality of parent participation and its implications among members of a historically marginalized group. Maintains that public policy discourse with narrow views of morality and character are at the center of contemporary definitions and marketing of services for violent/troubled youth. Uses descriptive and ethnographic data on violence in urban and black schools/communities to argue that, left undisturbed, moral entrepreneurs pose as much risk as the youths who are causing so much trouble. This ankle presents a portrait of the Edison School-Based Health Center (ESBHC) in Kalamazoo, Michigan. School-based health centers face challenges that force them to embrace broad, encompassing perspectives such as the ecosystemic perspective wed at the ESBHC. By presenting an administrative profile of the program and of the activities of a social worker who is a primary service provider, we demonstrate that health services must be defined in a manner that takes into consideration the relationships among all stakeholders and the context of such relationships.
