In this study, the relationship between spinodal decomposition and the formation of Ni-rich clusters and G-phase in the ferrite on hardening and pitting corrosion of two thermally aged duplex stainless steels (DSSs) at 475 °C was investigated. Results indicate that, for 2205 DSS, pitting corrosion behavior is influenced by the presence and size of G-phase precipitates for longer aging times, but this contribution is masked by the advanced stage of spinodal decomposition in the ferritic structure. On the other hand, for 2101 DSS, the formation of Cr-richer nitrides impairs pitting corrosion resistance more than spinodal decomposition.

During the poultry industrialization process the so-called sludge oil, a residual chicken fat, is recovered in the wastewater treatment plant and its use presents potential as raw material for biodiesel production. Thus, the aim of the study was to prepare blends of sludge oil with soybean oil to obtain fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) through the homogeneous alkaline transesterification reaction. To perform this study, a simple pre-treatment process - heating and subsequent filtration - was used, allowing sludge oil to be mixed with soybean oil to compose blends, without the need to use more sophisticated pre-treatment processes. Increases in biodiesel production have led to a surplus of crude glycerol, which represents a major bottleneck in the biodiesel production chain and has created new challenges to its sustainable use. Although there is a wide range of potential uses for crude glycerol, they are limited by its degree of purity, which affects its physical, chemical and biological properties. This paper presents a review and analysis of patents related to the use of glycerol in the period from 1993 to 2015, showing the quantity and diversity of work related to the search for alternatives to add value to glycerol. It was found that 85.7% of the filed patents fell into four categories of applications: 1) manufacture of chemical products; 2) production of polymer compounds; 3) production of biofuels and biogas; and 4) purification and use of glycerol. In this regard, the development of new technologies for the use of glycerol, without the need for traditional purification steps, are fundamental. This paper portrays the efforts that have been made in this direction and the obstacles that still have to be overcome.

Recent findings reveal that Cr nitride precipitation during lean duplex stainless steel (LDSS) 2101 aging at 475 °C is more detrimental to its corrosion resistance than Cr depletion caused by spinodal decomposition. Thus, the purpose of this study is to understand the role of Cr depletion caused both by evolution of spinodal decomposition and precipitation of other Cr-rich phases in pitting corrosion of LDSS 2404 aged at 475 °C. Our findings indicate that, although Cr carbide and nitride precipitation occur at 475 °C in LDSS 2404, the main cause of Cr depletion and loss of pitting resistance is spinodal decomposition.

The aim of this study concerns the effect of multi-pass shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) on the corrosion behavior of CW6MC cast nickel alloy. Using optical and SEM techniques the welded joint is analyzed. Vickers microhardness mapping and potentiodynamic polarization in NaCl and H2SO4 solutions are also evaluated. Both the Laves phase and NbC-type carbides are identified in the base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM) regions. The main microstructural difference observed between these regions is the morphology aspect and fineness of the dendritic arrays. The welding process promotes the finer columnar grains formation with refined intermetallic particles in the WM than equiaxed grains of the BM, which in turn results in higher microhardness values in the former region. However, no substantial changes were observed in the corrosion behavior between the BM and WM regions, considering both acid and saline media. Nevertheless, during the multi-pass SMAW process, some non-metallic micrometric inclusions (Mo and S-rich regions) can be constituted to occur in the WM region. This is associated with a significant drop in the corrosion performance of this region when the electrochemical tests are evaluated.

Static immersion tests (total, partial and crevice) and exposure in vapor phase were carried out for 2160 h at 50 °C. Our main findings indicate that fuel blends influence the corrosion behavior, being observed a less corrosive attack on the materials, except for copper that presented an anomalous corrosion behavior, with a clear trend towards lower corrosion rates. Carbon steel and stainless steel in total, partial and crevice tests presented surface morphology with slightly changes, while carbon steel exposed in vapor phase showed corrosive attack. Copper presented the highest corrosion rates in partial (9.5273 μm/y), total (9.1484 μm/y) and crevice (6.6178 μm/y) tests in the B7 blend, respectively; and the lowest corrosion rates in total (0.0547 μm/y) for the B15 blend; in partial (0.4926 μm/y) and crevice (0.0182 μm/y) tests for the B30 blend. Among the materials evaluated, copper showed higher influence on biodiesel oxidative stability. Aluminum exhibited good compatibility and did not show any compound formed on its surface without presenting any corrosion. Shrimp shells are a raw material rich in chitin, a precursor of chitosan biopolymer. The variables of processing (demineralization, deproteination and deacetylation) can be manipulated to determine the main characteristics of chitosan, the degree of deacetylation (DD), and average molar mass. This study evaluated the influence of one of the unit operations of shrimp shell physical processing, the milling, on the final product characteristic, chitosan. After different milling conditions, the raw material was subjected to standard chemical processing for chitin extraction, followed by deacetylation to obtain chitosan, which is characterized by 1H NMR, SEM, XRD, N2 physisorption (BET) and viscometry. The results indicated that the milling time of the raw material can be manipulated to increase the material depolymerization, significantly influencing the molecular weight reduction of chitosan a desirable feature for many applications of this biopolymer, and usually obtained by complex chemical and enzymatic methods.

An investigation was made of the effect of aging for up to 2000 h at 475 °C on the properties of the newly developed lean duplex stainless steel (LDSS) 2404. Due to its lower alloying content, the degradation of corrosion resistance as a function of thermal aging evolves more slowly in LDSS 2404 than in a standard duplex alloy (DSS 2205). The results also suggest that the mechanism of α' phase formation in the ferritic matrix occurs by spinodal decomposition and that this phenomenon has a stronger impact on the steel’s mechanical properties than on its corrosion behavior.

Titanium alloys are suitable for construction of the Coriolis mass flow meter due to their high strength to weight ratio, high thermal stability and excellent corrosion resistance. However, environments with high hydrogen content can be very harmful to titanium and its alloys, since this element may cause hydride formation and leads to hydrogen embrittlement. In this context, this paper reports on the analysis of a grade 9 titanium tube of a mass flow meter, which was performed using cyclohexanol (68%), water (2%) and Raney nickel catalyst (30%). After the active period, the flow meter was deactivated and left on standby for one year, and then reassembled on a production line, whereupon it failed prematurely. The failure was analyzed by OM, SEM, EDS, Vickers microhardness and XRD, whose results indicated that the cause was hydride embrittlement due to the chemical interaction between Raney nickel and the titanium tube during the deactivated period.

The relationship between alloy chemical composition and oxidation behavior of austenitic Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni shape memory stainless steels (SMSSs) during exposure at 800 °C in air was investigated. Although high Si and Cr additions are beneficial for both the shape memory effect and oxidation resistance, the increase of these ferrite stabilizer elements in Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni SMSSs makes the oxidation-induced ferrite stable at the early stages of the oxidation exposure, which in turn allows a faster diffusion of Mn, controlling the kinetics of oxidation. Our results suggested that the austenite stability should be maintained during the oxidation process for higher performance of these materials.

A região oeste do Paraná é responsável por grande parcela da exportação de carne e leite no estado. No entanto, os dejetos gerados nestas atividades podem ser aproveitados para produção de biogás. Por sua vez, o biogás resulta da fermentação anaeróbia, sendo composto majoritariamente por metano (CH4) e dióxido de carbono (CO2). Dentre as várias aplicações do biogás na área energética, uma que se destaca é sua reforma para a produção do gás hidrogênio (H2), um combustível de elevada capacidade energética e baixíssimo potencial poluente, podendo ser utilizado em células a combustível, agregando maior valor econômico e energético ao biogás. Neste contexto, quantificou-se o plantel animal, bem como os dejetos gerados pela atividade pecuária, e a capacidade de geração de biogás em cada cidade do oeste paranaense, visando à produção de hidrogênio por processos de reforma catalítica para geração de energia elétrica.

In this work, a chitosan sample with a high degree of deacetylation (DD >95%) obtained from freshwater shrimp shells was subjected to drying processes in an electric oven and by supercritical CO2. The results indicated that drying chitosan particles with supercritical CO2 resulted in a very significant increase in specific surface area and pore volume, and also increased the material's crystallinity index. This drying route led to a more than 10-fold reduction in viscosimetric molecular weight (from 35.3 to 3.0 kDa), indicating that the physical drying process caused the chitosan to depolymerize, which usually occurs by enzymatic and chemical methods, according to the literature. Low molecular weight chitosan is essential for some applications in the field of biomedicine (drug delivery for example); hence, drying via the CO2 route can be considered a promising technique for the production of high value-added materials with applications in this area. Existem muitas pesquisas sobre o uso do dióxido de silício (SiO2) como suporte para catalisadores heterogêneos. Entretanto, os principais precursores de SiO2 para síntese de catalisadores (como o TEOS – ortossilicato de tetraetila) são caros, o que implica na busca de matérias primas mais baratas. Neste contexto, vários trabalhos apontam o uso de pó de vidro e quartzo como fontes alternativas de SiO2. Este trabalho teve como objetivo utilizar diferentes fontes de SiO2, cristalina, amorfa e pó de vidro, e realizar a impregnação com KF, para o desenvolvimento de novos catalisadores heterogêneos. Os suportes e catalisadores foram caracterizados pelas técnicas de BET, DRX e ensaios para determinação de basicidade. Os catalisadores foram testados em reações de transesterificação. Dentre os catalisadores que tiveram conversão em ésteres metílicos, o pó de vidro é um catalisador bastante promissor, sendo eficaz e apresentando condições de trabalho mais favoráveis em relação a sílica amorfa e cristalina.

O demanda energética e busca a pelo desenvolvimento constantemente em ascensão, tem sido enfrentada de diferentes formas por cada país. O hidrogênio pode ser uma das formas de atender a esta demanda, pode ser resultante de um processo biológico, promovendo desenvolvimento sustentável, contribuindo para o tratamento de resíduos e geração de um biocombustível. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão sobre o processo biológico fermentativo que vem sendo estudado como uma alternativa para a produção de H2. Neste trabalho, foram avaliados estudos de produção de biohidrogênio com relação a alguns parâmetros do processo como, temperatura, potencial hidrogeniônico, substrato e inóculos. O biohidrogênio é um biocombustível que vem sendo estudado principalmente em países tropicais ou que já possuam uma boa tecnologia de biodigestores pré-estabelecida. Conclui-se que o método biológico tem se mostrado muito atrativo, pois o uso de resíduos para a produção de biohidrogênio, a longo prazo, tornará o processo viável economicamente e ambientalmente, facilitando o acesso a este biocombustível.

A procura por fontes renováveis de energia vem aumentando a cada ano, e neste cenário o biodiesel vem recebendo crescente atenção. O biodiesel pode ser produzido pela reação de transesterificação ou alcoólise, sendo que neste processo óleos vegetais e/ou gorduras reagem com um álcool de cadeia curta, geralmente metanol ou etanol. As reações ocorrem na presença de um catalisador, seja este ácido, básico ou enzimático, podendo ser homogêneo ou heterogêneo. Tradicionalmente é obtido pela transesterificação na presença de um catalisador homogêneo alcalino, frequentemente NaOH ou KOH, sendo estes não recuperáveis e passíveis de formação de subprodutos indesejáveis (sabão), contribuindo para a elevação de custos e geração de resíduos. O propósito deste trabalho foi produzir ésteres metílicos a partir do óleo de soja por uma rota alternativa, utilizando um catalisador heterogêneo, devido às vantagens conferidas ao processo produtivo, como facilidade na separação do biodiesel do meio reacional, ausência de reações paralelas e possibilidade de reuso do catalisador em novas reações. Dentre os inúmeros catalisadores heterogêneos, foi sintetizada a peneira molecular mesoporosa MCM-41 a base de sílica de acordo com o método descrito por Grün. Após a síntese das peneiras foi realizado o tratamento com um sal inorgânico, o fluoreto de potássio (KF), a fim de se obter catalisadores mais estáveis. Os materiais sólidos preparados foram caracterizados por diferentes técnicas, como a Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), Difratometria de Raios-X (DRX) e Análise Termogravimétrica (ATG). Já os ésteres metílicos foram analisados por Ressonância Magnética Nuclear de Hidrogênio (RMN 1H). Os resultados indicaram que o material foi sintetizado corretamente e a taxa de conversão em ésteres metílicos foi elevada (94,8%), além disso, apresentaram maior estabilidade, tornando-se promissores catalisadores heterogêneos para a utilização em reações de transesterificação.

A cerveja Pilsen e obtida da fermentacao alcoolica de graos malteados, principalmente a cevada, agua, lupulo e levedura. No entanto, o processo industrial consiste em varias etapas e duas destas foram aqui analisadas: a brassagem e a fermentacao. Ambas as etapas possuem variaveis fisico-quimicas, e quando nao controladas originam produtos com diferencas fisico-quimicas e organolepticas. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar estas duas etapas do processo produtivo, possibilitando a tomada de decisao sobre as variaveis a serem ajustadas de modo a maximizar a qualidade do produto final. Foi verificado que na brassagem, as variaveis como a percentagem em graus Plato (°P), a cepa e dosagem de fermento e a temperatura maxima para iniciar a fermentacao; e na fermentacao, as variaveis como temperatura e graus Plato interferem significativamente na produtividade e qualidade do produto final.

O etanol e considerado um combustivel alternativo que visa a diminuicao de problemas ambientais e uma forma de suprir a demanda energetica no mundo, em razao da escassez e a alta dos precos dos combustiveis fosseis e da poluicao causada por estes. O presente trabalho analisou a producao do bioetanol em escala piloto, levando em consideracao o °Brix e a temperatura durante o processo de fermentacao e posteriormente a graduacao alcoolica obtida. Observou-se que a temperatura e um fator que pode ter influencia na producao de bioetanol. O bioetanol foi obtido quando o experimento 2 obteve 94 oGL, o que nao foi possivel observar no experimento 1.
