We report on the growth and characterization of a new class of photocathode structures for use as electron sources to produce high brightness electron beams for accelerator applications. The sources are realized using III-nitride materials and are designed to leverage the strong polarization field, which is characteristic of this class of materials when grown in their wurtzite crystal structure, to produce a negative electron affinity condition without the use of Cs, possibly allowing these materials to be operated in radio frequency guns. A Quantum Efficiency (QE) of about 1 × 10 − 3 and an emitted electrons' Mean Transverse Energy (MTE) of about 100 meV are measured at a wavelength of 265 nm. In a vacuum level of 3 × 10 − 10 Torr, the QE does not decrease after more than 24 h of continuous operation. The lowest MTE of about 50 meV is measured at 300 nm along with a QE of 1.5 × 10 − 5 . Surface characterizations reveal a possible contribution to the MTE from surface morphology, calling for more detailed studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is among the first to investigate the impact of over-education and over-skilling on workers' wages using a unique pan-European database covering twenty-eight countries for the year 2014, namely the CEDEFOP's European Skills and Jobs (ESJ) survey. Overall, the results suggest the existence of a wage penalty associated with over-education. When the educational and the skills mismatches are interacted with each other in order to distinguish apparent over-education from genuine over-education, the results highlight that the workers with the highest wage penalty are those who are both over-educated and over-skilled. Experimental observations of the angular distribution of droplets during laser ablation and deposition of Al thin films are presented and discussed. The experimental results, obtained by simply moving the laser spot position with respect to the rotation axis of the target, allow clarification of the unexpected symmetric double peaked angular droplet distribution on the films. These results provide direct evidence that a laser fluence threshold exists, beyond which droplets are generated from a melt displacement and ejection mechanism rather than from a phase explosion. The main directions of particulate ejection are related to the particular geometry of the laser generated tracks, whose profiles depend on the relative position of the incident beam with respect to the rotation axis of the target. The intrinsic emittance of electron beams generated from a multi-alkali photocathode operated in a high voltage DC gun is reported. The photocathode showed sensitivity extending to the infrared part of the spectrum up to 830 nm. The measured intrinsic emittances of electron beams generated with light having wavelength longer than 800 nm are approaching the limit imposed by the thermal energy of electrons at room temperature with quantum efficiencies comparable to metallic photo-cathodes used in operation of modern photoinjectors. The requirement of a short response time of a cathode with respect to the laser beam for the generation of the photoelectrons limits, in the case of SPARC photoinjectors, the choice of the cathode materials to metals that usually present response time on the order of a few tens of femtoseconds. While copper and magnesium have been extensively studied, new research activities were devoted to study the photoemission properties of yttrium and to explore the feasibility of a photocathode based on this metal. Nevertheless, to date little data has been reported in literature. We present, in this work, the results of our investigation of Y films as suitable materials for the production of bright electron beams. Bulk and thin films of Y, prepared by pulsed laser deposition on Si substrates, have been tested as photocathodes in an ultra-high vacuum photodiode chamber at 10-7 Pa. Systematic laser cleaning treatments improved the film quantum efficiency (QE) from 10-6 to 4.5×10-4 at 266 nm, comparable to those of the corresponding bulk. Abstract: Mg-based films have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition technique for photocathode applications. We have investigated the influence of pulse laser duration on morphology and photoemissive properties. Two laser sources have been used, generating pulses of 30ns at 308nm (XeCl excimer laser), 5ps and 500fs at 248nm (KrF excimer laser) to grow Mg films onto Si and Cu substrates in high vacuum (∼10−7 Pa) and at room temperature. Morphological investigations carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have revealed that, in our experimental conditions, the number and the mean size of the droplets on the films surfaces decreases as the pulse laser duration shortens. The contamination level of Mg film surfaces have been studied by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The photoelectron performances in terms of quantum efficiency (QE) and emission stability have been tested in a UHV DC photodiode cell (10−7 Pa). Measures of the QE of the samples surfaces have revealed a decrease on the initial value for Mg-based photocathodes prepared by fs laser (from 7.8×10−4 to 6.6×10−4) PLD with respect to ps (from 6.2×10−4 to 7.4×10−4) and ns lasers (from 5.0×10−4 to 1.6×10−3). A comparison among Mg-based photocathodes prepared by ns, ps and fs PLD for the production of high brightness electron beams has been presented and discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The influence of the adsorbed gases on the photoelectron performance of Mg thin film-based photocathodes was investigated. Mg thin films were deposited on Silicon and Copper substrates by pulsed laser ablation technique. The samples deposited on Silicon substrate were used to deduce the morphology, the structure and the thickness by using different diagnostic techniques. On the contrary, the samples deposited on Copper substrate were tested as photocathodes in a DC photodiode cell. The quantum efficiency of the Mg photocathodes was systematically improved by laser cleaning treatments, which appears to be necessary before any use of a metallic photocathode. We report the results of preliminary tests on Mg film photocathodes deposited by pulsed laser ablation deposition on various substrates. A comparison with other deposition techniques is presented. We illustrate briefly the technique of deposition of thick films (up to several microns). Scanning electron microscope analysis of the films before and after laser cleaning has been performed to characterize the changes occurred on the surface. Measurements of the distribution and integrated value of quantum efficiency over the illuminated surface are reported. Plans for the deposition on the back flange of an RF gun are illustrated. The angular distribution of the ablated material was studied during sub-ps Si laser ablation deposition using a special hemicylindrical substrate holder and different laser fluences ranging between 0.4 and 1.7 J/cm2. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of the deposited films showed that, independent of the fluence, the distribution of the deposited droplets presents two maxima. The first maximum corresponds to the average plume deflection angle value due to the local surface orientation produced by the preferential etching process. The second maximum is observed approximately at 45° with respect to the normal of the target surface, and is related to the phase explosion products that expand along the incident laser beam direction. Abstract: Advanced high brightness radio frequency (RF) gun injectors require photocathodes with a fast response, high quantum efficiency (QE) and good surface uniformity. Metal films deposited by various techniques on the gun back wall could satisfy these requirements. A new deposition technique has been recently proposed, i.e. pulsed laser ablation. Several Mg samples have been deposited by this technique: the emission performance and morphological changes induced on the cathode surface during laser activation are compared and discussed. Abstract: Pd-doped-SnO2 thin films were grown on Si (100) substrates using pulsed laser deposition at room temperature. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy studies showed that the film morphologies are strongly related to two major parameters: first, high O2 background pressure, namely ≥10 Pa, induces the formation of nanoparticles by condensation in the gas phase; second, when the target–substrate distance d t–s is close to the plume length L p , considering an adiabatic expansion, textured thin films are obtained. Their morphologies depend therefore on the O2 pressure, since by increasing the pressure from 10 to 100 Pa the film morphology changes from a cracked structure to a well developed cauliflower-like-structure with a columnar growth. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction were also employed to analyze, respectively, the chemical bonding state, the chemical composition and the structure in the deposited films. Sub-stoichiometric thin films are also synthesized with a Pd content of about 2.3 at.% under O2 background pressures higher than 10 Pa. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Mg films deposited by pulsed laser ablation on a Cu substrate were tested as photocathodes in a DC diode. They showed features of robustness and a quantum efficiency of at low accelerating field when illuminated by 266nm light at normal incidence. A graphite protective layer of about 20nm thickness deposited by laser ablation just after the Mg deposition made the cathode stable and of easy handling. The cathodes could stay for several weeks in air before being inserted in the test chamber. The preparation procedure and the tests are presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this study, pulsed laser ablation of pure Mg targets (99.99%) using an XeCl excimer laser (λ =308nm, τ =30ns) was used to grow Mg coatings on Cu substrates. A thin layer of Mg (100–200nm) was deposited in UHV of 5×10−6 Pa to ensure high purity. A second ultra-thin layer of MgO of 10–20nm was deposited in oxygen at 10−2 Pa pressure to protect the previous layer from atmospheric contamination. Measurements for determining the electron yield of the deposited samples under UV irradiation were performed on a diode structure in another UHV apparatus evacuated to 10−6 Pa. Abstract: Nanostructured tin oxide films were deposited on Si(100) substrates at room temperature using the PLAD method. Depositions were achieved by using a XeCl* laser, with a fluence of 10J/cm2 to ablate a SnO2 target either in vacuum or in an atmosphere containing a relatively low partial pressure (10−2 to 100Pa) of O2. A range of spectroscopic diffraction and real space imaging techniques, SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS were used in order to characterize the surface morphology, structure, and composition of films. XPS results indicate that the film deposited in vacuum comprises a mixture of Sn, SnO and SnO2. In contrast, films deposited in oxygen comprise only SnO and SnO2. This indicates that the deposition of tin oxide films in relatively low partial pressures of O2 prevents the accumulation of unreacted tin metal within the resulting film. SEM studies reveal a sub-micron grain size structure, while XRD analyses indicate that the samples are crystalline, with no evidence for the presence of amorphous material. In this paper we discuss the significance and implications of these findings in terms of the optimization of tin oxide films for use in gas sensing devices and other technological applications. The results of a new geometrical configuration of pulsed laser ablation deposition technique that uses a hemi-cylindrical transparent plastic substrate are presented and discussed. With the new arrangement, two distinct components with different material compositions have been clearly observed. While the first component comprises atoms, ions and molecules and constitutes visible or the so-called “luminous” plume, the second component is formed of fragments, clusters and liquid droplets and is invisible to the naked eye. The latter component constitutes a major part of the ablated material. The luminous plume symmetry axis does not coincide with the mass distribution symmetry axis. In the case of Si ablation and 45° incident beam angle, the maximum deflection angle of the luminous plume reaches 30° with respect to the normal to the target surface, while the deflection angle of the second component is higher than 40°. The change in the target morphology and the dependence of the composition of the ablated material on local fluence, along with the hydrodynamic effects, is sought to explain this previously unexpected and unreported phenomenon. The conventional configuration (substrate parallel and frontal to the target surface) of the pulsed laser ablation deposition technique has been modified for improving the film uniformity with acceptable deposition rates, leading to the ‘dynamic deposition configuration’. The novelty of this arrangement is the ability to place by computer-control the substrate synchronously in front of the plume axis compensating the plume deflection effect. The new geometrical configuration was used to deposit films of Ti, Al and Cu. All the deposited films exhibited both high thickness uniformity and remarkable deposition rates. The deposition process of Al thin films by nanosecond laser irradiation with a special hemi-cylindrical holder, containing an array of silicon substrates, is studied. The experimental results, obtained by scanning electron microscopy investigation, show that the ablated material produces an unexpected component in a direction that is approximately specular to that of the incident direction of the laser beam. This component, never before reported in the literature, is mainly formed of micrometer droplets. Simple calculations and qualitative assessments show that the forces induced by radiation pressure, thermoelastic waves, or shockwave formation cannot explain the direction of this new component. Abstract: The effects of laser fluence on the morphology of Y films in the regime characteristic of multiple-pulse laser deposition were investigated. Y thin films were deposited on silicon and copper substrates. The samples deposited on silicon substrate were used to deduce the morphology and the thickness of the deposited films. On the contrary, the samples deposited on copper were tested as photocathodes in a DC photodiode cell. The interest to produce Y-based photocathodes is due to the low work function of this metal with the possibility to drive such photocathodes with a visible radiation in the radio-frequency photo-injector. In this way it is possible to reduce the thermal emittance of the photoelectron beam and to increase the photocurrent intensity by utilizing the second harmonic of Ti:Sa driver laser. Recent research on photocathodes for photoinjectors has focused on the understanding of the photoemission process at low energy (i.e. at photon energy close to the material's work function) as well as on the study of ordered and innovative photocathode materials, with the aim of minimizing the emittance at the cathode. We here present a preliminary study on low energy photoemission from (100) oriented Ba1−xLaxSnO3 thin films, characterizing their quantum efficiency and the mean transverse energy of the photoelectrons. The heating of the electronic distribution of a copper photocathode due to an intense drive laser pulse is calculated under the two-temperature model using fluences and pulse lengths typical in RF photoinjector operation. Using the finite temperature-extended relations for the photocathode intrinsic emittance and quantum efficiency, the time-dependent emittance growth due to the same photoemission laser pulse is calculated. This laser heating is seen to limit the intrinsic emittance achievable for photoinjectors using short laser pulses and low quantum efficiency metal photocathodes. A pump-probe photocathode experiment in a standard 1.6 cell S-band gun is proposed, in which simulations show the time dependent thermal emittance modulation within the bunch from laser heating can persist for meters downstream and, in principle, be measured using a slice emittance diagnostic. Sodium potassium antimonide photocathodes with Quantum Efficiency (QE) in the range of few percent have been grown, and their photoemission properties are measured. We report the intrinsic emittance and response time of electron bunches extracted from this material. It is possible to recover the QE of an overheated cathode by simple potassium addition, and the cathode is rugged enough to deliver tens of mA of average current with no or minimal degradation. Abstract: In the present paper we report the investigations by scanning electron microscopy of Al thin films prepared by pulsed laser ablation deposition experiments in vacuum. Laser parametric studies show that the poor thickness uniformity of Al films arises from surface roughening and structure formation on the irradiated Al target surface. Moreover, it has been confirmed that the plume deflection effect, the morphological changes of the irradiated target surfaces and of the deposited films strongly depend on the laser fluence (4.6–14.7J/cm2). At low laser fluence, plume deflection angles up to 12° and columnar structures on the target surface have been observed. The variation in the target morphology and in the droplets density of the deposited films can be associated with competitive ablation processes related to different values of local incident laser fluence. Systematic profilometric investigations of the deposited Al films revealed a strong asymmetry during the deposition process. The changes of the laser ablated target morphology and the corresponding plume deflection angle have been studied. As the number of laser pulses/site increases, the target morphology changes and produces a visible deviation of the plasma plume. Scanning electron microscopy analyses of the target surface allowed us to correlate the plume deflection angle to the target roughness and, hence, to the number of laser pulses/site. The deflection effect has been observed for all the targets used (Ti, Si, Cu, Al–Sn alloy, graphite and magnetic compounds) and for whatever target surface morphology produced by laser irradiation. As earlier models explaining the origin of the plume deflection are not universal and less than ever satisfactory, we suggest a simple model that seems to be more realistic and general. Abstract In this paper, we review the status of bright electron sources. High peak current (up to kA) low emittance (< 1 mm rad) electron beams have been one of the critical components in the development of XFELs. The outlook for the field is even more promising as progress in the understanding of photoemission physics, development of novel photocathode materials, gun and laser technology, enable further progress in advanced light sources as well as novel applications such as ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopy. The injection of a seed in a free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier reduces the saturation length and improves the longitudinal coherence. A cascaded FEL, operating in the high-gain harmonic-generation regime, allows us to extend the beneficial effects of the seed to shorter wavelengths. We report on the first operation of a high-gain harmonic-generation free-electron laser, seeded with harmonics generated in gas. The third harmonics of a Ti:sapphire laser, generated in a gas cell, has been amplified and up-converted to its second harmonic (λrad = 133 nm) in a FEL cascaded configuration based on a variable number of modulators and radiators. We studied the transition between coherent harmonic generation and superradiant regime, optimizing the laser performances with respect to the number of modulators and radiators. Abstract: The advance in laser–plasma acceleration techniques pushes the regime of the resulting accelerated particles to higher energies and intensities. In particular, the upcoming experiments with the 250TW laser at the FLAME facility of the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, will enter the GeV regime with more than 100pC of electrons. At the current status of understanding of the acceleration mechanism, relatively large angular and energy spreads are expected. There is therefore the need for developing a device capable to measure the energy of electrons over three orders of magnitude (few MeV to few GeV), with still unknown angular divergences. Within the PlasmonX experiment at FLAME, a spectrometer is being constructed to perform these measurements. It is made of an electro-magnet and a screen made of scintillating fibers for the measurement of the trajectories of the particles. The large range of operation, the huge number of particles and the need to focus the divergence, present challenges in the design and construction of such a device. We present the design considerations for this spectrometer that lead to the use of scintillating fibers, multichannel photo-multipliers and a multiplexing electronics, a combination which is innovative in the field. A 250-TW laser system (FLAME - Frascati laser for acceleration and multidisciplinary experiments) is now in its commissioning phase in a new laboratory at LNF-INFN in the framework of the PLASMONX (Plasma acceleration and monochromatic X-ray generation) project. The laser will deliver<25 fs duration pulses with an energy up to 6 J, at a 10 Hz repetition rate. An ad hoc target area has also been designed and is currently being set up, allowing the first test experiments of electron laser wakefield acceleration to be carried out over the next few months in a safe, radiation-protected environment. An overview of the main features of the laser system and target area is given, along with a survey of the design and set-up of the self-injection test experiment, which is expected to reach the production of sub-GeV electron bunches. Abstract: In the framework of the DS4 EUROFEL collaboration, a research work plan at the SPARC free-electron laser (FEL) test facility aiming at the investigation of seeded and cascaded FEL configurations is under implementation. The main goal of the collaboration is to study and test the amplification and the FEL harmonic generation process of an input seed signal obtained as higher-order harmonics generated both in crystals (400 and 266nm) and in gases (266, 160, 114nm). The SPARC FEL can be configured to test several cascaded FEL configurations. In this paper we introduce SPARC and its main parameters and we analyze the superradiant cascade and the harmonic cascade seeded with a signal with the typical time structure of the harmonics generated in gas. The ablation process induced by excimer lasers is a collective phenomenon that basically involves two phenomena: the laser radiation–matter interaction and the dynamic of the ablation plume. The laser parameters, the thermal and optical properties of the material, and the surface morphology are critical factors in the ablation mechanisms affecting the direction of the ablation plume expansion. In this study, the role of the surface roughness and the evolution of its morphology under the laser irradiation were investigated. Assuming a thermal ablation model, a theoretical study of the initial steps of the laser ablation process by a finite element method using ANSYS (6.1) was performed. Different ablation experiments were carried out on silicon and copper targets using a XeCl laser. The target surface morphology changes were observed by SEM and the plume deflection was recorded by a digital camera. An acceptable agreement between the experimental and simulated results was found. This study contributes to a better understanding of the physical processes involved in the laser ablation and the relations between the plume deflection angle and the surface roughness. The growth of thin films by pulsed-laser deposition involves extremely complex physical processes. The study of different aspects of the basic mechanisms of the laser ablation is still in progress, with special emphasis on the modelling of the plume deflection effect and the structure formation on the irradiated surface. In this work, the initial stages of the laser ablation process have been investigated considering the surface roughness and the continuous morphological changes of the surface produced by laser irradiation. Assuming a thermal ablation model, a computational approach of the structure formation on the irradiated surface by finite elements using ansys® (6.1) has been developed. Complementary, different ablation experiments on silicon wafers using a XeCl excimer laser (308 nm) impinging at 45° with respect to the target were carried out. Scanning electron microscope analyses were performed to study the morphological changes of the Si surface. The validity of the model and the agreement of the numerical results are discussed. Hastelloy thin films have been deposited on carbon steel substrates at room temperature by pulsed laser ablation of bulk Hastelloy targets. Different numbers of laser pulses were used in order to obtain films of various thicknesses. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the surface morphology of the deposited films. Energy dispersion X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have shown that the laser ablation process was almost congruent, and the crystallographic structure was retained in the films. In order to relate the microstructure of the film surface with its corrosion behavior, electrochemical tests in aqueous CO2 environment, such as potentiodynamic curves and linear polarization resistance, were performed. Ultra-short electron beams, produced through the velocity bunching compression technique, are used to drive the SPARC linear accelerator based source, which relies on the emission of coherent transition radiation in the terahertz range. This paper reports on the main features of this radiation, as terahertz source, with spectral coverage up to 5 THz and pulse duration down to 200 fs, with an energy per pulse of the order of several micro-joule, and as electron beam longitudinal diagnostics. Abstract: A new technique, named “laser comb”, was tested during the last SPARC run. It is able to produce electron pulse trains with a charge of some hundreds pC, a repetition rate of some terahertz, and a sub-picosecond length. This technique is based on the velocity bunching configuration of the SPARC injector. It can be useful to drive pump and probe free-electron laser experiments, to generate coherent excitation of plasma waves in plasma accelerators, and to produce narrow band terahertz radiation. Abstract: The PLasma Acceleration and MONochromatic X-ray generation (PLASMONX) project foresees the installation at LNF of a 0.3PW (6J, 20fs pulse) Ti:Sa laser system, named Frascati Laser for Acceleration and Multidisciplinary Experiments (FLAME), to operate in close connection with the existent SPARC electron photo-injector, allowing for advanced laser/e-beam interaction experiments. Among the foreseen scientific activities, a Thomson scattering experiment between the SPARC electron bunch and the high power laser will be performed. At the present time the linac has been tested and the electron beam characterized up to the maximum operating energy (150MeV). The beam lines transporting the beam to the interaction chamber with the laser have been designed. The electron final focusing system, featuring a quadrupole triplet and large radius solenoid magnet (ensuring an e-beam waist of 5–10μm) as well as the whole interaction chamber layout has been defined. The optical transfer line issues: transport up to the interaction; tight focusing; diagnostics and fine positioning; have been solved within the final design. The construction of the building hosting the laser has been completed; delivering and installation of the laser, as much of the beam lines elements will take place in the next months.
