3. Fear of flying assessment: A contribution to the Italian validation of two self-report measures

Abstract

The present study describes the psychometric properties of the Italian adaptation of two self-report scales for fear of flying assessment: the Flight Anxiety Situations questionnaire (FAS), which measures anxiety related to specific flying phases, and the Flight Anxiety Modality questionnaire (FAM), which focuses on somatic and cognitive modalities occurring in air travel situations. Although both questionnaires have been translated in various languages and tailored to several local frameworks, this is the only study that provides an evaluation of the adapted instruments’ validity and reliability. Validation procedures were done on 259 participants, including patients who experienced fear of flying as well as a group of non-clinical subjects. Exploratory factor analysis was used to investigate the optimal design for the dimensional structure of both instruments. Confirmatory analyses showed that the envisaged models provided an acceptable fit for the available data. A three-factor solution for FAS and a two-factor solution for FAM were therefore detected. Construct validity was supported by convergent and criterion-related data, internal consistency was satisfactory for all subscales, and both instruments revealed a high level of sensitivity to change. Overall, psychometric quality of both measures showed to be fairly good and comparable to those found in the original study, thus suggesting their application in treatment programs for non-English speakers.

Abstract

Recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have allowed the evaluation of metabolic, diffusion and hemodynamic features of malignant gliomas. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether such information provided useful, complementary information to conventional MRI for improving the evaluation of glioblastoma extent. Ten patients with glioblastoma multiforme underwent conventional MRI, proton MR spectroscopic imaging (1H-MRSI), perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Metabolite signals, including normalized choline, N-acetylaspartate, creatine and lactate/lipids, were obtained by 1H-MRSI; apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) by DWI; and relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) by PWI. In edematous-appearing areas, 3 multiparametric patterns were identified: infiltrating tumor, with abnormal metabolite ratios, lower ADC and higher rCBV; pure edema, with normal metabolite ratios, higher ADC and lower rCBV; and tumor-infiltrated edema, with abnormal metabolite ratios and intermediate ADC and rCBV. In normal-appearing areas, 2 multiparametric patterns were identified: tumor-infiltrated tissue, with abnormal metabolite ratios and higher rCBV; and normal tissue, with normal MR parameters. The combination of 1H-MRSI, DWI and PWI features contributed to delineation of glioblastomas, offering information not available with conventional MRI. This approach may enhance the assessment of brain gliomas, providing useful information for guiding stereotactic biopsies, surgical resection and radiation treatment.

Abstract

Molecular parameters involved in the prediction of response of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are still unclear. We have evaluated the expression and mutational status of p53 and the expression of bcl-xL and bax in a series of 62 consecutive children (median age: 4 years; 38 males and 24 females) affected by de novo ALL. Alterations and overexpression of p53 were uncommon events (9/62, 14.5%) while bcl-xL and bax overexpression were frequent (about 70%). EFS was directly correlated to age < 6 years (p = 0.0178), nonT phenotype (p = 0.0470), WBC at diagnosis ≤ 20000/μl (p = 0.0093), response to induction therapy with prednisone (p = 0.0211) and inversely correlated to mutated p53 or overexpression of p53 (p = 0.0039) and high intensity of Bcl-xL expression (p = 0.0055). OS was directly correlated with age < 6 years (p = 0.0004), female gender (p = 0.0139), nonT phenotype (p = 0.0012), WBC at diagnosis ≤ 20000/μl (p = 0.0187), response to induction therapy with prednisone (p = 0.0211), wild type p53 or low expression of p53 (p = 0.035). When all factors were considered in a stepwise Cox regression analysis, only the good response to PDN (p = 0.013) and the low intensity of Bcl-xL expression (p = 0.001) were independent significant prognostic factors with regard to EFS. Moreover, only age (p = 0.022), gender (p = 0.036) and WBC at the diagnosis (p = 0.050) were independent prognostic factors with regard to OS. Moreover, the mutated status of p53 was statistically correlated to the resistance to the induction therapy with PDN (correlation coefficient: -0.349, p = 0.008). In conclusion, both bcl-x L and bax were frequently expressed at high intensity, but only bcl-xL was an independent predictor of EFS in our series. Moreover, p53 alterations were uncommon and alone not strong independent predictors of outcome, but they were correlated to poor response to therapy with PDN and inversely correlated to EFS and OS in univariate analysis. ©2005 Landes Bioscience.

Abstract

The effect of Entada africana extracts on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver damage was evaluated. Plasma enzyme levels, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT), alkaline phosphatase, hepatic 5'-nucleotidase activity and triglyceride levels increased with CCl4 administration, were lowered by pretreatment with Entada extracts. The results of this study showed that Entada, according to its therapeutic indication in various liver diseases in traditional medicine, could afford a protective action against CCl4-induced hepatocellular injury. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

21. Sporadic hemangioblastoma of cauda equina: A case report and brief literature review.

Abstract

Background: Hemangioblastomas (HBs) are rare lesions accounting for 1%-5% of all spinal cord tumors, and are mostly associated with Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome. Localization in the cauda equina is uncommon., Aim: In this manuscript, we aimed to describe a rare case of sporadic intradural extramedullary HB of the cauda equina and present a literature review., Mathods: A systematic research was performed on PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar, using the keywords "spinal HB" and "cauda equina tumors." The previous literature is integrated by the description of the present case. A 49-year-old female presented in August 2020 to our institution with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which showed an intradural mass at L1/2 level and angiography that showing a nidus of serpiginous vessels inside the lesion. Symptoms were right sciatica and paresthesia in right L5 radicular dermatome for more than 3 months. Neurological examination revealed claudicatio spinalis and hypoesthesia on right L5 dermatome and weakness of right anterior tibialis muscle. Microsurgical en bloc resection of lesion was performed with adjuvant neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring. The histological examination provided the diagnosis of HB., Results: After surgery, symptoms and neurological impairment gradually improved. Postoperative MRI showed no residual tumor., Conclusions: Although intradural extramedullary HB of the cauda equina without VHL syndrome is a rare pathological entity, this diagnosis must be taken in consideration when a mass affects cauda equina. Preoperative embolization is an option to minimize intraoperative bleeding. Radiosurgery seems to prevent recurrences when the tumor is not completely excised. Abstract

Background: The term 'grape (Vitis vinifera) water' refers to a by-product from the cryoconcentration of must that, if not reclaimed, would be considered as wastewater. In this study, the nutraceutical potential of waters reclaimed from the cryoconcentration of Grillo and Moscato musts was evaluated., Results: Both waters showed physicochemical parameters in agreement with Italian regulation for drinking water, and interesting levels of F - (3.02-8.02 mg L -1 ) and SO 4 - (52.85-49.34 mg L -1 ). Inorganic elements, including Mg (5.54-7.78 mg L -1 ), K (47.12-59.87 mg L -1 ), Fe (219.09-205.32 μg L -1 ), and Zn (189.65-127.30 μg L -1 ), and phenolic contents <35 mg GAE L -1 contributed to determine moderate antioxidant activities. Considering fatty acid composition, oleic and linoleic acids predominated, being higher in Moscato than Grillo samples (64.42% versus 58.22%, and 5.42% versus 6.07%). Grape waters displayed also rich aroma profiles, including mainly esters, alcohols and terpenoids. The latter components (i.e. linalool and α-terpineol) were more abundant in Moscato than in Grillo (13% versus 8%). Interestingly, some minor volatiles, characterized the vine of provenance (e.g. benzaldehyde and 3-methylbutylacetate in Moscato). All grape waters showed also a considerable fraction of ethyl lactate, six-carbon compounds and acetates, reflecting the proximity of samples to the grapes of origin., Conclusion: In a growing scenario of environmental decay and resource depletion, results from this study support an innovative and profitable waste recycling strategy for the wine industry. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Abstract

In this paper, the isolation of one new iridoid glucoside, 6 β -acetoxyipolamiide (1: ), and thirteen (2:  - 14: ) known congeners from two Lamiaceae species, Stachys ocymastrum and Premna resinosa , leaf extracts is reported. The structural determination of the isolated compounds was performed by mono- and bidimensional NMR spectroscopic analysis as well as MS experiments. The isolates were assayed for their antiangiogenic activity by two in vivo models, zebrafish embryos and chick chorioallantoic membrane assays. The compounds with a significant antiangiogenic activity in both assays were β -hydroxyipolamiide (2: ), ipolamiide (3: ), and buddlejoside A 5 (8: ). 6- O - α -l-(3″- O-p -Methoxycinnamoyl-4″- O -acetyl)rhamnopyranosyl catalpol (13: ) and 6- O - α -l-(2″- trans -caffeoyl)rhamnopyranosyl catalpol (6: ) showed the best antiangiogenic response on blood vessel growth in zebrafish embryos, whereas saccatoside (10: ) and 6- O - α -l-(2″- O - : p -methoxycinnamoyl-3″- O -acetyl)rhamnopyranosyl catalpol (14: ) resulted in a strong reduction of capillary formation in the chorioallantoic membrane assay., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New York.)
