The nature of the 1 − and 2 − excited states in Be 10 is studied using the Be 11 ( p , d ) transfer reaction in inverse kinematics at 10A MeV at TRIUMF ISAC-II, in particular to assess whether either of them can be considered as an excited halo state. The angular distributions for both states are extracted using deuteron- γ coincidences and analyzed using a transfer model taking into account one-step and two-step processes. A good fit of the angular distributions is obtained considering only the one-step process, whereby an inner p 3 / 2 neutron of Be 11 is removed, leaving the halo neutron intact. Higher-order processes however cannot be rejected. The small spectroscopic factors extracted suggest that the structure of both states is not uniquely halo-like, but rather display a more complex configuration mixing cluster and halo structures. Further insights are limited, as this experiment specifically probed the halo-like (but not cluster-like) Be 11 ( 1 / 2 + ) ⊗ ( ν p 3 / 2 ) − 1 configuration in both states.

7 pags., 4 figs., Situated in the so-called "island of inversion," the nucleus $^{32}$Mg is considered as an archetypal example of the disappearance of magicity at $N=20$. We report on high statistics in-beam spectroscopy of $^{32}$Mg with a unique approach, in that two direct reaction probes with different sensitivities to the underlying nuclear structure are employed at the same time. More specifically, states in $^{32}$Mg were populated by knockout reactions starting from $^{33}$Mg and $^{34}$Si, lying inside and outside the island of inversion, respectively. The momentum distributions of the reaction residues and the cross sections leading to the individual final states were confronted with eikonal-based reaction calculations, yielding a significantly updated level scheme for $^{32}$Mg and spin-parity assignments. By fully exploiting observables obtained in this measurement, a variety of structures coexisting in 32Mg was unraveled. Background: In the "island of inversion", ground states of neutron-rich $sd$-shell nuclei exhibit strong admixtures of intruder configurations from the $fp$ shell. The nucleus $^{30}$Mg, located at the boundary of the island of inversion, serves as a cornerstone to track the structural evolution as one approaches this region. Purpose: Spin-parity assignments for excited states in $^{30}$Mg, especially negative-parity levels, have yet to be established. In the present work, the nuclear structure of $^{30}$Mg was investigated by in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy mainly focusing on firm spin-parity determinations. Method: High-intensity rare-isotope beams of $^{31}$Mg, $^{32}$Mg, $^{34}$Si, and $^{35}$P bombarded a Be target to induce nucleon removal reactions populating states in $^{30}$Mg. $\gamma$ rays were detected by the state-of-the-art $\gamma$-ray tracking array GRETINA. For the direct one-neutron removal reaction, final-state exclusive cross sections and parallel momentum distributions were deduced. Multi-nucleon removal reactions from different projectiles were exploited to gain complementary information. Results: With the aid of the parallel momentum distributions, an updated level scheme with revised spin-parity assignments was constructed. Spectroscopic factors associated with each state were also deduced. Conclusions: Results were confronted with large-scale shell-model calculations using two different effective interactions, showing excellent agreement with the present level scheme. However, a marked difference in the spectroscopic factors indicates that the full delineation of the transition into the island of inversion remains a challenge for theoretical models.

Quenching from the melt using an Optical Floating Zone furnace was investigated as a possible high-throughput preparation method in order to screen novel scintillating materials. To validate this method, polycrystalline rare-earth aluminum garnets and yttrium gallium aluminum garnets were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and radioluminescence emission spectra as well as radioluminescence imaging and compared to the previously reported properties of those materials. In order to achieve rapid, but quantitative comparison of the materials, pellets fabricated from the synthesized powders were sintered; two different sintering conditions were investigated and compared. A simplistic energy deposition and light absorption model for brightness of opaque samples under X-ray irradiation was developed to estimate the relative scintillation efficiency of the materials. Based on the results, Y3Al5O12, LuY2Al5O12 and GdY2Al5O12 seem to have the highest scintillation efficiency among the prepared samples.

Sn ejecta particle-size distributions from the break-up of a microsheet in a vacuum will be presented. The micro-sheet was created from a high explosive driven shock wave passing through a precision groove machined into a Sn sample. The particle-size measurements were carried out using an ultraviolet in-line Fraunhofer holography diagnostic. The diagnostic will be presented along with particle-size distributions over most of the ejecta velocities throughout the microsheet.

Expérience NSCL; International audience; A new device, the TRIple PLunger for EXotic beams (TRIPLEX), has been developed for lifetime measurement studies with rare isotope beams. This plunger device holds up to three metal foils in the beam path and facilitates the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique to measure lifetimes of nuclear excited states in the range of 1 ps to 1 ns. The unique design allows independent movement of the target and the second degrader with respect to a fixed first degrader in between, enabling advanced experimental approaches, such as the differential recoil distance method and the double recoil distance method. The design and control of the device are presented in this paper, together with simulated performances of the new applications. As an example of actual experiments, results from the lifetime measurement of the neutron-rich $^{17}$C isotope performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory are shown.

However, the presence of rotational band structures, which are fingerprints of deformed shapes, have only recently been observed in this region. In this work, we report on a measurement of the low-lying level structure of Mg33 populated by a two-stage projectile fragmentation reaction and studied with the Gamma Ray Energy Tracking In-Beam Nuclear Array (GRETINA). The experimental level energies, ground-state magnetic moment, intrinsic quadrupole moment, and γ-ray intensities show good agreement with the strong-coupling limit of a rotational model.

Previous experiments observed a 4^{+} state in the N=28 nucleus ^{44}S and suggested that this state may exhibit a hindered E2-decay rate, inconsistent with being a member of the collective ground state band. We populate this state via two-proton knockout from a beam of exotic ^{46}Ar projectiles and measure its lifetime using the recoil distance method with the GRETINA γ-ray spectrometer. The result, 76(14)_{stat}(20)_{syst} ps, implies a hindered transition of B(E2;4^{+}→2_{1}^{+})=0.61(19) single-particle or Weisskopf units strength and supports the interpretation of the 4^{+} state as a K=4 isomer, the first example of a high-K isomer in a nucleus of such low mass.

An ultraviolet (UV) in-line Fraunhofer holography diagnostic has been developed for making high-resolution spatial measurements of ejecta particles traveling at many mm/μs. The diagnostic will be described and results from high-explosive shock-driven tin ejecta experiments will be presented.

The quadrupole transition rate for the 41+→21+ transition of Ni58 was determined from an application of the recoil distance method with the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking In-beam Nuclear Array (GRETINA). The present result of the B(E2;41+→21+) was found to be 50-6+11e2fm4, which is about three times smaller than the literature value, indicating substantially less collectivity than previously believed. Shell model calculations performed with the GXPF1A effective interaction agree with the present data and the validity of the standard effective charges in understanding collectivity in the nickel isotopes is discussed.

There is significant evidence supporting the existence of deformed ground states within the neutron-rich N≈20 neon, sodium, and magnesium isotopes that make up what is commonly called the "island of inversion." However, the rotational band structures, which are a characteristic fingerprint of a rigid nonspherical shape, have yet to be observed. In this work, we report on a measurement and analysis of the yrast (lowest lying) rotational band in Mg32 up to spin I=6+ produced in a two-step projectile fragmentation reaction and observed using the state-of-the-art γ-ray tracking detector array, GRETINA (γ-ray energy tracking in-beam nuclear array). Large-scale shell-model calculations using the SDPF-U-MIX effective interaction show excellent agreement with the new data. Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease worldwide; however, few cases are reported in the US. Brucella melitensis infections are primarily acquired via consumption of high-risk foods or travel to endemic areas. We describe a case of B. melitensis infection in a Tennessee soldier following deployment in Iraq. Initial symptoms included knee and back pain. Culture of an aspirate of the left sacroiliac joint yielded B. melitensis. Genetic analysis indicated that this isolate came from the Middle East. Investigation of laboratory workers identified risky exposures and positive serology prompting post-exposure prophylaxis. Military personnel and other travellers should be advised to reduce risk regarding food consumption and animal contact in endemic areas. Additionally, medical providers should remain vigilant for non-endemic zoonoses among recent travellers.

The present measurements provide a model-independent determination of transition strengths giving the values of B(M1;1/2+→3/2g.s.+)=1.04-0.12+0.03×10-2μN2 and B(M1;5/2+→3/2g.s.+)=7.12-0.96+1.27×10-2μN2. The quenched M1 transition strength for the 1/2+→3/2g.s.+ transition, with respect to the 5/2+→3/2g.s.+ transition, has been confirmed with greater precision. The current data are compared to importance-truncated no-core shell model calculations addressing effects due to continuum and three-body forces.

Excited states have been studied in $^{28}\mathrm{Na}$ using the $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay of implanted $^{28}\mathrm{Ne}$ ions at the Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds/LISE as well as the in-beam $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory/S800 facility. New states of positive $({J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={3}^{+},{4}^{+})$ and negative $({J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={1}^{\ensuremath{-}}--{5}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ parity are proposed. The former arise from the coupling between $0{d}_{5/2}$ protons and $0{d}_{3/2}$ neutrons, while the latter are attributable to couplings of $0{d}_{5/2}$ protons with $1{p}_{3/2}$ or $0{f}_{7/2}$ neutrons. While the relative energies between the ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={1}^{+}--{4}^{+}$ states are well reproduced with the USDA interaction in the $N=17$ isotones, a progressive shift in the ground-state binding energy (by about 500 keV) is observed between $^{26}\mathrm{F}$ and $^{30}\mathrm{Al}$. This points to a possible change in the proton-neutron $0{d}_{5/2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}0{d}_{3/2}$ effective interaction when moving from stability to the drip line. The presence of ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={1}^{\ensuremath{-}}--{4}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ negative-parity states around 1.5 MeV as well as of a candidate for a ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={5}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state around 2.5 MeV give further support to the collapse of the $N=20$ gap and to the inversion between the neutron $0{f}_{7/2}$ and $1{p}_{3/2}$ levels below $Z=12$. These features are discussed in the framework of shell-model and energy-density-functional calculations, leading to predicted negative-parity states in the low-energy spectra of the $^{26}\mathrm{F}$ and $^{25}\mathrm{O}$ nuclei.

International audience; The changing of the nuclear shells for light, neutron-rich nuclei, and the single-particle nature of 26Na, has been explored by studying 25Na(d, p)26Na in inverse kinematics, using a beam of 25Na ions at 5 MeV per nucleon, provided by the ISAC-II facility at TRIUMF, Vancouver. Charged particles were detected with a highly-segmented silicon array that surrounded the 0.5 mg/cm2 (CD2)n target. Gamma rays from the recoiling 26Na nucleus were detected using eight Compton-suppressed HPGe clover detectors. Recoil tagging was provided by an in-beam scintillation foil, downstream of the germanium array. A novel technique of utilising pγ- and pγγ-gating to extract proton angular distributions from states populated close in energy was employed with success. New states in 26Na that are populated directly have been identified, using γ-decay patterns. Shell model calculations for comparison to experimental results are ongoing, using different model bases.

The first lifetime measurement used to study the magnetic response of halo nuclei is presented. The lifetime of the first excited state of the one-neutron halo nucleus 19C has been measured by two complementary Doppler-shift techniques with the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking In-beam Nuclear Array (GRETINA). The B(M1; 3/2+ →1/2+g.s.) strength of 3.21(25)×10−3μ2 N determined for this decay represents a strongly hindered M1 transition among light nuclei. Shell-model calculations predict a strong hindrance due to the near-degeneracy of the s1/2 and d5/2 orbitals among neutron-rich carbon isotopes, while tensor corrections and loosely bound effects are necessary to account for the remaining strength.

Here, we report the genome sequence of Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum strain MS-1, which consists of of 36 contigs and 4,136 protein-coding genes.

The transition rates from the yrast ${2}^{+}$ and ${4}^{+}$ states in the self-conjugate $^{72}\mathrm{Kr}$ nucleus were studied via lifetime measurements employing the GRETINA array with a novel application of the recoil-distance method. The large collectivity observed for the ${4}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}^{+}$ transition suggests a prolate character of the excited states. The reduced collectivity previously reported for the ${2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{0}^{+}$ transition was confirmed. The irregular behavior of collectivity points to the occurrence of a rapid oblate-prolate shape transition in $^{72}\mathrm{Kr}$, providing stringent tests for advanced theories to describe the shape coexistence and its evolution.

The reaction mechanisms of the two-neutron transfer reaction ${}^{12}$C(${}^{6}$He,${}^{4}$He) have been studied at ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=30$ MeV at the TRIUMF ISAC-II facility using the Silicon Highly-segmented Array for Reactions and Coulex (SHARC) charged-particle detector array. Optical potential parameters have been extracted from the analysis of the elastic scattering angular distribution. The new potential has been applied to the study of the transfer angular distribution to the 2${}_{2}^{+}$ 8.32 MeV state in ${}^{14}$C, using a realistic three-body ${}^{6}$He model and advanced shell-model calculations for the carbon structure, allowing to calculate the relative contributions of the simultaneous and sequential two-neutron transfer. The reaction model provides a good description of the 30-MeV data set and shows that the simultaneous process is the dominant transfer mechanism. Sensitivity tests of optical potential parameters show that the final results can be considerably affected by the choice of optical potentials. A reanalysis of data measured previously at ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=18$ MeV, however, is not as well described by the same reaction model, suggesting that one needs to include higher-order effects in the reaction mechanism.

This article describes the role of stage models in organizational research. In various sections of the article, we discuss the definition of stage models, different varieties of stage models, the way that stage models will characterize strategic change, and finally, the criteria that authors, reviewers, and readers ought to apply to stage models. On the whole, the authors conclude that stage models represent an alluring yet fragile form of explanation. The authors think that the limitations of stage models usually outweigh their potential benefits in explaining transformational change.

In the thirty years since the publication of his two major works, Wroe Alderson’s writing has served as a durable theoretical resource for marketing practitioners and authors in marketing and other behavioral sciences. We contend that Alderson’s theory is the most comprehensive general theory that exists in the marketing literature. In this paper we offer a brief synopsis of some examples of Alderson’s major contributions to marketing theory, then present a list of recent articles that cite Alderson with a summary of the primary subject of each paper. Finally, we offer a formal examination of Alderson’s theory using well-known metatheoretical criteria.This review of recent literature shows the breadth of Alderson’s influence in the behavioral sciences. The results of our study reinforce the significance of Alderson’s work and dispute the superficial stylistic criticisms often directed toward this seminal contribution to the literature. Binding of type I interferons (IFNs) to their receptors induces rapid tyrosine phosphorylation of multiple proteins, including the alpha and beta subunits of the receptor, the polypeptides that form the transcriptional activator ISGF3 alpha (Stat113, Stat84, and Stat91), and the p135tyk2 and Jak-1 tyrosine kinases. In this report, we demonstrate that the alpha subunit of the type I IFN receptor (IFN-R) corresponds to the product of a previously cloned receptor subunit cDNA and, further, that the p135tyk2 tyrosine kinase directly binds and tyrosine phosphorylates this receptor subunit. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) fusion proteins encoding the different regions of the cytoplasmic domain of the alpha subunit can bind the p135tyk2 contained in human cell lysates. The association between the alpha subunit and Tyk2 was demonstrated by immunoblotting with anti-Tyk2 and antiphosphotyrosine antibodies and by using an in vitro kinase assay. Analogous experiments were then performed with recombinant baculoviruses encoding constitutively active Jak family tyrosine kinases. In this case, p135tyk2, but not Jak-1 or Jak-2 protein, binds to the GST-IFN-R proteins, suggesting that the interaction between these two proteins is both direct and specific. We also demonstrate that Tyk2, from extracts of either IFN alpha-treated human cells or insect cells infected with the recombinant baculoviruses, can catalyze in vitro phosphorylation of GST-IFN-R protein in a specific manner. Deletion mutants of the GST-IFN-R protein were used to localize both the binding and tyrosine phosphorylation site(s) to a 46-amino-acid juxtamembrane region of the alpha subunit, which shows sequence homology to functionally similar regions of other cytokine receptor proteins. These data support the hypothesis that the Tyk2 protein functions as part of a receptor complex to initiate intracellular signaling in response to type I IFNs.

To investigate ophthalmology residency program leadership expectations regarding resident competency in retinal procedures by graduation and to investigate resident experience performing retinal procedures.A survey was emailed to the program director at each accredited US ophthalmology training program.Completed surveys were received from 37/117 (32%) programs. Most respondents identified panretinal photocoagulation (100%), laser for retinal tear (100%), laser for diabetic macular edema (94%), laser for macular edema associated with branch retinal vein occlusion (92%), intravitreal injection (83%), and vitreous tap/intravitreal injection (78%) as procedures residency graduates should be competent to perform; 89%, 3%, 64%, 17%, 14%, and 3% reported residents perform20 such cases, respectively, as primary surgeon, and 0%, 56%, 6%, 37%, 46%, and 63% reported residents perform one to five such cases, respectively. Competency in scleral buckling and pars plana vitrectomy was expected by 17% and 19%, respectively.Most respondents expect residency graduates to be competent in retinal laser and injection procedures. Competency in incisional retinal procedures is generally not expected. For some laser and injection procedures, a substantial proportion of residents perform one to five cases as primary surgeon.

A reconfigurable video ghost cancelling filter chip, the deghoster filter, is described. The chip can implement many useful combinations of sparse and dense IIR (infinite impulse response) and FIR (finite impulse response) filters, with a maximum of 60 taps per chip. Data processing can be real, complex, or half-complex, where half-complex involves the use of complex inputs and the extraction of the real-only or the imaginary-only component outputs. The chip has good data bit resolution, and it includes an input phase adjuster and a clamp circuit.

Proper blood studies are necessary for the differential diagnosis of many diseases of the eye and visual system. The review of several blood chemistry, serology, and immunology tests is presented here with a brief review of the theory and use of these tests.

Introduction Some patients with gastroparesis (GP) require sustained central intravenous (IV) access for hydration, medication, and/or nutrition, leaving them at risk for venous thrombosis. Patients We studied a group of 53 patients with GP for identifiable risk factors of clinically significant thrombosis. Patients requiring prolonged central IV access fell into two groups: those who had clinical incidence of IV catheter-related thrombosis (CLOT, n = 14) and those who did not form IV catheter thrombosis (NOCLOT, n = 39). Methods We analyzed and compared clinical symptoms, serum coagulation studies, and autoimmune antibodies in the CLOT and NOCLOT groups. Results Patients in the CLOT group had statistically more Scl 70 antibodies than did the NOCLOT group, and another autoantibody, Ku 66, was found in higher titers in the NOCLOT group than in the CLOT group. Other autoimmune and coagulation factors were not statistically different between the two groups, although a subgroup of CLOT patients had lower plasma protein S levels. Conclusion We conclude that the presence of Scl 70 autoantibodies is associated with increased clotting risk in this group of GP patients and the Ku 66 antibody may be associated with decreased risk of thrombosis in patients with GP. These findings, coupled with lower protein S levels in some CLOT patients, suggests that autoimmune factors may be associated with GP patients who thrombose IV access versus patients who do not.

Risk assessment is a methodology which has been used to evaluate the safety of major public projects, notably aerospace programs, liquefied natural gas import facilities, and nuclear power plants. This article begins with a review of public attitudes toward risk and then describes the basic components of a risk assessment. Subsequent critical analysis suggests the pitfalls inherent in the technique, especially in regard to the establishing of a criterion of safety against which the results of a risk assessment will be compared. The author identifies three such criteria and rejects two of them, including the one most commonly used in federal government agency decision‐making, as unreliable or philosophically unacceptable. The article concludes with comments on the applicability of risk assessment in coastal zone management.
