Digital Twins (DTs) hold significant promise in addressing the challenges faced by food supply chains (FSCs). This paper aims to provide critical insights into the potential for Digital Twins to meet the key challenges of the FSC and establish a comprehensive conceptual framework for their implementation. Following a systematic literature review (SLR), the study identified 81 peer-reviewed, high-quality papers published over the last decade (2012–2023). The typology-driven thematic analysis emphasises the emergent nature of DTs within FSCs, highlighting their key characteristics including monitoring, real-time simulation, and scenario analysis. The identified characteristics, applications, implementation drivers and barriers of Digital Twin form the basis for a novel conceptual framework for implementing DTs in FSCs. Leveraging insights from Innovation Adoption Theory and the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, the study outlines a structured five step implementation process divided into three stages. Notably, technology assessment and performance evaluation emerge as two innovative steps necessary for the successful implementation of DTs specifically, not previously considered by the theory. The study identifies promising avenues for future research. The increasing complexity of industrial systems demands more effective and intelligent maintenance approaches to address manufacturing defects arising from faults in multiple asset modules. Traditional digital twin (DT) systems, however, face limitations in interoperability, knowledge sharing, and causal inference. As such, cognitive digital twins (CDTs) can add value by managing a collaborative web of interconnected systems, facilitating advanced cross-domain analysis and dynamic context considerations. This paper introduces a CDT system that leverages industrial knowledge graphs (iKGs) to support maintenance planning and operations. By employing a design structure matrix (DSM) to model dependencies and relationships, a semantic translation approach maps the knowledge into a graph-based representation for reasoning and analysis. An automatic solution generation mechanism, utilising graph sequencing with Louvain and PageRank algorithms, derives feasible solutions, which can be validated via simulation to minimise production disruption impacts. The CDT system can also identify potential disruptions in new product designs, thus enabling preventive actions to be taken. A case study featuring a print production manufacturing line illustrates the CDT system's capabilities in causal inference and solution explainability. The study concludes with a discussion of limitations and future directions, providing valuable guidelines for manufacturers aiming to enhance reactive and predictive maintenance strategies. Nowadays many processes in the food industry are monitored in an automatic way, with the purpose of minimising the need for workforce and of ensuring the proper control of the quality and safety of the foodstuff. All the sensors share data with a centralised management unit, where often a Manufacturing Execution System collects and evaluates them. As reported in recent research, however, a further step that can be undertaken, exploiting Industry 4.0 enabling technologies, is the implementation of digital twin approaches, with the additional aim to prevent possible issues during production. In line with these considerations, this work aims at showing two different digital twin models intended for improving the control of as many real food systems. Liquid and powder fluids are taken as examples for highlighting the differences in the optimization of the two food processes, as well as for fully exploring the potential of the digital twin approach. Photogrammetry systems are widely used in industrial manufacturing applications as an assistance measurement tool. Not only does it provide high-precision feedback for assembly process inspection and product quality assessment, but also it can improve the flexibility and robustness of manufacturing systems and production lines. However, with growing global competition and demands, companies are forced to enhance production efficiency, shorten production lifecycle and increase product variety by incorporating reconfigurable factory design that can meet challenging timeline and requirements. Although dynamic facility layout is widely investigated, the position selection for the photogrammetry system in dynamic manufacturing environment is usually overlooked. In this paper, dynamic layout of the V-STARS photogrammetry system is investigated and optimised in a digital-twin environment using deep reinforcement learning. The learning objectives are derived from the field of view (FoV) evaluation from point clouds 3D reconstruction, and collision detection from the digital twin simulated in Visual Components. The purpose of this paper is to explore adaptation-based and stability-based views of supply chain resilience to analyse what insights these different perspectives, individually and collectively, offer for theory and practice. In the stability-based view, resilience is triggered by disruptions and performance deviationsto return to some 'normal' states. This view accounts for known-known uncertainty. The adaptation-based view shifts the focus from avoiding oscillations and recovering some stable states toward proactive adaptation and performance persistence. The adaptation-based view aims at designing structurally adaptable networks with process flexibility and actively used redundancy. It considers resilience from the value-creation perspective accounting for unknown-unknown uncertainties. Stability-based approach views resilience as an outcome or quantity. Adaptation-based approach considers resilience as a property or quality. A combination of stability- and adaptationbased approaches is imperative for building a strong supply chain immunity through an integration of general protection and adaptability. These approaches complement each other depending on the knowledge of and attitude to uncertainty by decision-makers. A combination of the two views helps consider resilience both as a quantity to measure how sick the supply chain is and to understand how the resilience comes about to ensure the quality of the network health and viability. Supply chains operate in a highly distuptive environment where a SC master plan should be updated in line with disruptions to ensure that a high service level is provided to customers while total cost is minimised. There is an absence of knowledge of how a SC master plan should be updated to cope with disruptions using hybrid modelling. To fill this gap, we present a hybrid modelling framework to update a SC master plan in presence of disruptions. The proposed framework, which is a precursor to a SC digital twin, integrates simulation, machine learning, and optimisation to identify the production, storage, and distribution values that maximise SC service level while minimising total cost under disruptions. This approach proves effective in a SC disrupted by demand increase and lead time extension. Results show that employing hybrid modelling leads to a noticeable improvement in service level and total cost. The outcome of the new knowledge on using hybrid modelling for managing disruptions provides essential learning for the extension of modelling through a digital twin for SC master planning. Rapid advances in new-generation information technologies have been the main driving force for the transformation of manufacturing enterprises in Industry 4.0. Digital twin (DT), as a key technology to promote intelligent manufacturing, has shown great potential for manufacturing enterprises to create an industrial intelligence-driven production equipment through in-depth integration of cyber-physical systems. However, the lack of a systematic effective DT modelling method with a supporting evaluation metric is the most important factor restricting the application of DT in manufacturing enterprises. To bridge the gap, this paper proposes a novel multi-level modelling and fidelity evaluation (MLM&FE) method of DT for creating smart production equipment in manufacturing enterprises, which could help enterprises establish an industrial intelligence-driven production environment to quickly respond to changes in the customised global market, thus greatly improving competitiveness of the enterprises. Specifically, this paper firstly designs a reference framework for DT-enhanced smart production equipment, on which an MLM&FE architecture is proposed. Then, key implementation methodologies and tools for MLM&FE are introduced from the perspective of data space modelling, virtual space modelling, knowledge space modelling, model integration and evaluation. Production systems have to be adapted continuously to changing circumstances. This means that the responsible production planner has to frequently make decisions about reconfiguring complex systems under uncertainty whose outcome greatly affects the company's business success. Discrete-event simulation is one powerful tool to support the necessary analysis and scenario evaluation, but still remains time-consuming and tricky to set up and to maintain. When implemented as a digital twin of the production system, the simulation model can maintain a high degree of accuracy over a long time period. An approach to realise this potential is presented and illustrated in this paper with a use case from the automotive industry. This paper contributes several new methods and findings to the development of digital twins of production systems: Firstly, it demonstrates how exceptional events in the validation of the digital twin can be handled. Secondly, it shows how structural changes in the system can be discovered using data on machine activity and process mining. Thirdly, the paper introduces a possibility on how to assess the accuracy of the digital twin. The adoption of simulation models as Digital Twins (DTs) has been standing out in recent years and represents a revolution in decision-making. In this context, we note increasingly faster and more efficient decisions by mirroring the behaviour of physical systems. On the other hand, we highlight the challenges to ensure the simulation models validity over time since traditional validation approaches have limitations when we consider the periodic update of the model. Thus, the present work proposes an approach based on the constant assessment of these models through Machine Learning and control charts. To this end, we suggest a monitoring tool using the K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN) classifier, combined with a p-control chart, to periodically assess the validity of DT simulation models. The proposed approach was tested in several theoretical cases and also implemented in a real case study. The findings suggest that the proposed tool can monitor the DT functioning and identify possible special causes that could compromise its results. Finally, we highlight the wide applicability of the proposed tool, which can be used in different DT models, including near/real-time models with different characteristics regarding connection, integration, and complexity. Digital twins became of greater interest to researchers and practitioners in supply chain and operations management (SCOM). Literature has addressed the need to understand digital twins in SCOM, mostly focusing on fragmented technological solutions and use cases. We start with an integrative literature review to determine which elements belong to research on digital twins in SCOM. We define the seven major elements of a digital twin in SCOM: technology, people, management, organisation, scope, task, and modelling. We also distinguish five major types of digital twins in SCOM: product, process, organisation, supply chain and network-of-networks. Illustration of a SCOM digital twin is provided using an anyLogistix example. We conclude that digital twins in SCOM are not merely a simulation-based replica of a real object but a complex socio-technical phenomenon involved in continuous human-artificial intelligence interactions. This leads to an understanding of the role of digital twins through the lens of Industry 5.0, reconfigurable and viable supply chains. High quality, safe, and reliable batteries are essential for widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Current Li-ion battery pack manufacturing processes rely on manual inspections to ensure electric vehicle battery quality. Such manual quality control is prone to errors, increasing the chances of defective batteries. This is likely to increase safety and reliability concerns in the public imagination, slowing down the adoption of electric vehicles. Furthermore, manual inspection is time-consuming and likely to become a bottleneck in scaling up electric vehicle battery production. A potential solution to address this need for fast and accurate inspection of batteries is the use of machine vision and robotics. In this study, we use digital twin design and simulation to develop a battery module inspection system that uses cobots and machine vision to inspect electric vehicle batteries for defects. Our proposed system can automate visual quality checks that are currently being done by human operators. The proposed cobotic system has been simulated and validated for a variety of battery defects to achieve fast and reliable detection. As electric vehicle adoption accelerates and demand increases, the inability to produce batteries in sufficient quantities has emerged as a critical bottleneck in the electric vehicle supply chain. Given the impending climate change crisis, resolving this bottleneck is imperative to accelerate the transition to a zero-emission electric mobility future. One potential solution is the use of robotics for fast and cost-effective assembly of batteries at scale. This study proposes a three-stage digital twin design and analysis method to develop robotic workcells for fast and cost-effective assembly of electric vehicle battery modules. Using digital twin design and simulation, robotic assembly line configurations have been developed for battery module production at different scales. Digital twin analytics was used to evaluate and optimise the proposed robotic battery assembly system for speed and cost. Industrial automation experts were consulted to further improve robotic work cell layouts to minimise investment in robots. Because digital twins of robotic workcells have been used, the configurations of the battery assembly line, as designed and validated, are ready for immediate implementation. For practitioners, this study offers heuristic methods to determine the appropriate assembly line configuration, the required number of robots and humans, for a desired production volume. The paper describes a smart model for palletising as main intra-logistics task for product-on-pallet distribution, and its development in Logistics 4.0 framework aligned to Industry 4.0. The model is developed in holonic paradigm as a 2-layer Holonic Logistics Execution System (HLES) in semiheterarchical topology. Scheduling of logistics activities and allocation to resources are optimised for global efficiency on compact time periods. The logistics model virtualises physical entities: resources, pallets and orders as holons implemented with digital twin software, and categories of task workloads: resource health monitoring, dispatching and tracking pallet orders, re-assigning jobs at resource failure, which grants reality-awareness and robustness. Global workload optimisation uses Constraint Programming as decision making technology with ILOG optimiser engine as situation-specific solver tool in SaaS cloud model, and delegate multi-agent system (MAS) technology for intelligence distribution. The optimised objective function is a combination of palletising cost weighted by robot speed limits and pallet storage cost in payable stocks. The main constructs are exemplified and validated on a real-life structure with multiple palletising resources in which programmable logic controllers (PLC) coordinate locally the parallel execution of order holons according to their globally optimised sequence. In recent years, the emerging Digital Twin (DT) paradigm under Industry 4.0 has been attracting more attention from both practitioners and academia due to its dynamic capabilities. Most DT studies are theoretical and deal with hypothetical analysis, whereas fewer studies are available on real-life empirical cases. Due to dynamic problem-solving capabilities, DT technologies are widely used in performance improvement analysis in food processing companies (FPC) despite limited implication's for business strategies. Our study incorporates the DT technologies with an implementation case study on FPC and accomplishes the real-life problem of the food processing company (FPC). Moreover, the proposed DT research framework demonstrates the various DT implementation stages, such as strategic mapping and physical-virtual space replica, with rigorous analysis. The results show that DT enhances the existing system's machine availability, allocation efficiency, technical efficiency, worker efficiency, utilization rate, effectiveness, step ratio, and throughput rate. Numerous studies have focused on digital twins (DTs) and their applications. However, a common method for evaluating the performance of DTs is lacking. Digital twins performance assessment mechanism is crucial when improving or monitoring any process or system in a business, such a strategy could serve as a guide to help researchers and practitioners create more effective digital twins. Guided by these challenges, we propose a structured method for measuring the performance and flexibility of digital twins, and our study provides a procedure for quantitative calculation of the performance of DTs based on four key performance indicators (KPIs). Moreover, we propose a new KPI, DTflex, for determining the flexibility of digital twins. We evaluated the performance of DTflex as a KPI to demonstrate its use as a simple tool for designers and practitioners to quickly compare different DT methodologies, which might provide valuable input for the iterative improvement of DTs to increase their efficiency in future applications. The knowledge provided along with the method proposed in this paper is expected to help researchers and practitioners working in different fields to compare DT methodologies and DT performance which will lead to higher efficiency DT solutions and increased re-usage of existing DTs. The Industry 4.0 revolution is changing the manufacturing landscape. A broad set of new technologies emerged (including software and connected equipment) that digitise manufacturing systems. These technologies bring new vitality and opportunities to the manufacturing industry, but they also bring new challenges. This paper focuses on the impact of Industry 4.0 on production planning approaches and software. We first propose a digital twin framework that integrates production planning systems and frontier technologies. The frontier technologies that may impact production planning software are the internet of things, cloud manufacturing, blockchain, and big data analytics. Second, we provide a state-of-the-art on the application of each technology in the production planning, as well as a detailed analysis of the benefit and application status. Finally, this paper discusses the future research and application directions in the production planning. We conclude that Industry 4.0 will lead to the construction of data-driven models for production planning software. Data has become a high-value commodity in manufacturing. There is a growing realisation that the data-driven applications could become strong differentiators of manufacturing enterprises. To guide the developments in digitisation, a widely accepted framework is needed. In the absence of the universal framework, the components making a digital enterprise are captured in an example framework that is introduced in the paper. The adoption of new technology and software solutions has increased complexity of manufacturing systems. In addition, new product introductions have become more frequent and the demand more variable. A digital space enables optimisation and simulation of decisions before their realisation in the physical space. Predictive modelling with its time dimension is a valuable actor in the digital space. Three challenges of predictive modelling such as model complexity, model interpretability, and model reuse are identified in this paper. The coverage of each challenge in the literature is illustrated with the recently published papers. The main aspects of these challenges and the synthesis of the developments in digital manufacturing are articulated in the form of eight observations that could guide the future research. In this paper, we analyze the literature concerning the implementation of digital twins (DTs) for zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM) following a systematic method and, guided by a preliminary finding that a structured and standardised approach to the development of the DT applications is lacking, we provide a standardised design methodology to guide researchers and practitioners in their efforts to develop DTs regardless of the domain. After examination and interpretation of the literature, we also present the results of our state-of-the-art analysis, discuss the current state and limitations of research and practice, and provide useful insights on this important and complex topic. The design methodology proposed in our study will benefit both practitioners and academicians by covering the essential elements to be considered when developing DTs for ZDM for any applications in this domain. The study also contributes to knowledge by presenting a structured overview of the specific research area with a comprehensive, systematic, and critical analysis of the literature and by providing answers to some fundamental questions in the context of DTs for ZDM. Supply chains (SCs) operate in a highly disruptive environment, where they face a variety of disruptions in product and cash flows. In such an environment, determining suitable inventory and cash replenishment policies ensures that cash and inventory are at the right place at the right time and provides a productive SC with high customer service levels. In this study, we first examine the impact of the disruptions in physical and financial flows on SC performance. We then, investigate the potential of a SC digital twin framework to help decision-makers in managing inventory and cash throughout the SC during disruption, currently absent from the literature. The proposed SC digital twin framework integrates machine learning (ML) and simulation to identify the inventory and cash replenishment policies that minimise the impact of the disruptions on SC performance. This approach proves effective in a SC disrupted by demand increase, capacity reduction, and credit purchase increase. Results show that employing the SC digital twin leads to a noticeable reduction in the cash conversion cycle for upstream members of the SCs. We observe that the cash conversion cycle for the upstream SC members is greatly impacted by the inventory policy employed by their immediate downstream members. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past two decades Biomedical Engineering has emerged as a major discipline that bridges societal needs of human health care with the development of novel technologies. Every medical institution is now equipped at varying degrees of sophistication with the ability to monitor human health in both non-invasive and invasive modes. The multiple scales at which human physiology can be interrogated provide a profound perspective on health and disease. We are at the nexus of creating avatars (herein defined as an extension of digital twins) of human patho/physiology to serve as paradigms for interrogation and potential intervention. Motivated by the emergence of these new capabilities, the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the Departments of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and Bioengineering at University of California at San Diego sponsored an interdisciplinary workshop to define the grand challenges that face biomedical engineering and the mechanisms to address these challenges. The Workshop identified five grand challenges with cross-cutting themes and provided a roadmap for new technologies, identified new training needs, and defined the types of interdisciplinary teams needed for addressing these challenges. The themes presented in this paper include: 1) accumedicine through creation of avatars of cells, tissues, organs and whole human; 2) development of smart and responsive devices for human function augmentation; 3) exocortical technologies to understand brain function and treat neuropathologies; 4) the development of approaches to harness the human immune system for health and wellness; and 5) new strategies to engineer genomes and cells.

In the sintering of advanced ceramics, a digital twin consisted of a finite element model can predict the final shape and microstructure of a sintered ceramic. However, to minimise uncertainties, it is essential to continually update the mechanical properties in the digital twin using data collected from the manufacturing process. One promising approach for achieving this is through artificial neural networks (ANN). This study introduces a machine learning strategy to update the constitutive behaviour of advanced ceramics in finite element analysis of sintering deformation. A major challenge in implementing machine learning in material processing is the huge amount of data required by the training and validation of an ANN, which are often unavailable or incomplete in a real manufacturing process. This study demonstrates that the data requirement can be reduced by employing a two-step training technique. Firstly, the ANN is trained using a nonlinear constitutive law, which describes a general relationship between the strain rates and stresses. Subsequently, the weights and biases of the ANN are transferred for the retraining using limited experimental data for an actual ceramic. It is shown that such approach can successfully capture the nonlinear constitutive behaviour of fine-grained alumina without demanding for large amount of experimental data. A case study is provided, highlighting the feasibility of implementing the ANN in a commercial finite element package, to replace the constitutive law and predict the shrinkage and distortion of a sintering part. In particular, the sintered dumb-bell shape part, simulated using the retrained ANN, showed grain size and relative density that markedly different from those using the nonlinear constitutive law. It is important to note that the proposed methodology is generic and can be used to create ANNs to replace constitutive laws in finite element analysis in digital twins for a wide range of other engineering processes. A new method was proposed to address fault diagnosis by applying the digital twin (DT) high-fidelity behavior and the deep learning (DL) data mining capabilities. Subsequently, the proposed fault distribution GAN (FDGAN) was built to map virtual and physical entities for the data from the established test platform. Finally, the MobileViG was employed to validate the model and diagnose faults. The accuracy of the proposed method with training samples of 600 and 800 were 88.4% and 99.5%, respectively. These accuracies surpass those of other methods based on CycleGAN (98.86%), CACGAN (94.92%), ACGAN (86.45%), ML1D-GAN (82.33%), and transfer learning (99.38%). Therefore, with the integration of global connectivity, an innovative network structure, and training methods, FDGAN can effectively address challenges such as network degradation, limited feature extraction in small windows, and insufficient model robustness. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) across various fields has significantly impacted how individuals construct and present their identities, particularly on social media. This brief communication explains the concept of digital twinning within the public sphere, where AI-generated images create virtual twins. We examine the phenomenon of attachment to AI-generated self-image, proposing that a perceived sense of emptiness predicts attachment to AI-generated self-image. Using the empty self-theory as a theoretical foundation, we argue that individuals experiencing feelings of emptiness are more likely to form deep emotional bonds with their AI-generated self-image. They may find solace by associating their sense of emptiness with AI-generated self-images, similar to idealised images in advertising. This attachment can manifest as either subjective, where users believe the AI-generated image truly represents them, or objective, where the image is seen as a possession. In future research, it would be valuable to investigate the various factors that contribute to an individual's inclination to form an attachment to AI-generated self-images. Deep exploration of the difference between objective and subjective attachment and quantifying this proposed relationship through empirical studies could provide valuable insights into the interplay between technology and human psychology. Human induced pluripotent stem cell‐derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC‐CMs) offer potential as an in vitro model for studying drug cardiotoxicity and patient‐specific cardiovascular disease. The inherent electrophysiological heterogeneity of these cells limits the depth of insights that can be drawn from well‐designed experiments. In this review, we provide our perspective on some sources and the consequences of iPSC‐CM heterogeneity. We demonstrate the extent of heterogeneity in the literature and explain how such heterogeneity is exacerbated by patch‐clamp experimental artifacts in the manual and automated set‐up. Finally, we discuss how this heterogeneity, caused by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, limits our ability to build digital twins of patient‐derived cardiomyocytes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Industry 5.0 initiative seeks the sustainability and resilience of production systems through digital technologies. Derived from such an initiative, the Operator 5.0 concept surged to place the operator as the main value-creation contributor of sustainable and resilient human-machine systems. Smart service systems are data-driven services that provide intelligent capabilities to support decision-making in business processes. Despite previous research on smart services driven by multiple technologies in different contexts, further studies approaching Digital Twins as enablers of smart services in machine use phases are yet to be explored. Digital Twin, an Industry 5.0 enabler, is a technology that virtually represents physical assets that collect and analyze data from actual operations to make predictions for decision-making. Simulation-based Digital Twins generate simulation models that are continuously upgraded with asset data in real time, improving the accuracy of predictions. This paper aims to investigate how the Simulation-based Digital Twins (SDT) can enable the development of smart services in the Operator 5.0 context. We build on a multiple case study of 13 interviews from nine heavy mobile machinery manufacturers. We capture our results in categorizing SDT-enabled smart services for the use phases of the machine lifecycle. Challenges related to data integration and interoperability were raised recently under the auspice of the Urban Digital Twin (UDT). This new paradigm shows its potential to address current city challenges. However, to maximize its outcomes at the city scale, we should tackle the fundamental issues related to data integration. Indeed, various Digital Twin (DT) frameworks are developed in practice. Their implementations led to the identification of three main levels of data integration. The first level involves the extension of the data model to handle new information. The second level supports data by default, and the data needs to be transformed to meet the model requirements. The third level performs the integration at the front-end level with the help of system architectures. The aim of this work is to analyze, illustrate, and guide the effectiveness of different data integration approaches. This exploratory review unpacks the levels of integration according to the corresponding UDT lifecycle phases (i.e., creation, use, and update phases). It highlights the challenges and potentialities of data integration levels and offers the DT designer conceptual guidelines related to data integration. Furthermore, current and theoretical data integration scenarios are extracted and investigated, considering several types and sources of data. This research provides a comprehensive analytical framework for data integration within UDTs, where some of the current operational UDT are examined based on the various integration levels of life cycle data. While the state-of-the-art identifies data integration as a major challenge for the full implementation of UDT, it is not explored in depth, and the integration is only addressed from a case study-specific perspective, according to the data availability and the UDT requirement. Hence, this framework provides a generic and urban application-independent overview of the different levels of data integration based on the UDT lifecycle inspired by the Spatial Data Infrastructure lifecycle. This article provides first conceptual insights of data integration levels to build, use, and update UDT. However, from a practical perspective, the list of UDT initiatives used to illustrate the work is not exhaustive, and future initiatives should be documented. Furthermore, the current emphasis is on the creation and use phases of the lifecycle, which lacks a concrete illustration of the update phase. In the swiftly progressing landscape of wearable electronics and the Internet of Things (IoTs), there is a burgeoning demand for devices that are lightweight, cost‐effective, and self‐powered. In this study, a self‐powered bidirectional knee joint motion monitoring system is introduced, leveraging a dual ratchet sensing (DRS) system fabricated using 3D printing technology. This approach offers substantial economic and portability benefits. The DRS system is engineered to harness the negative work generated from knee joint movements to power commercial electronic devices, obviating the need for additional metabolic energy from the human body. By synergizing the DRS with virtual reality technology, it becomes feasible to monitor knee joint movements in real‐time with remarkable accuracy, presenting a novel avenue for the integration of digital twin technology. Through the amalgamation of convolutional neural network machine learning algorithms with Bayesian optimization techniques, the DRS system can discern up to 97% of knee joint movements, paving the way for innovative applications in smart rehabilitation and healthcare. As the space industry is undergoing an evolution, the current approaches toward design, development, and qualification of Electric Propulsion (EP) systems largely based on empirical "trial-and-error" methodologies are falling short of addressing the emerging needs and keeping abreast of the rapid changes in market trends. Furthermore, with the proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the space industry toward next-generation autonomous satellites and spacecrafts, the conventional EP monitoring and control strategies become inadequate and need to give way to approaches compatible with satellite-level autonomy requirements. A digital twin (DT) – a technology capable of providing an accurate dynamically adapting virtual representation of a physical asset – is a game-changing concept that catalyzes the transcendence of the EP industry past its pressing challenges today. In this paper, we aim to: (i) define the DT concept, highlighting how it surpasses traditional modelling, (ii) enumerate the DT's breakthrough promises for the EP industry, and (iii) specify the challenges to realize practical and scalable EP DTs. Additionally, we report on the technical progress achieved and/or planned at Imperial Plasma Propulsion Laboratory to fill the foundational gaps in three building block elements of DTs, namely, (i) a cost-effective kinetic model to generate extensive high-fidelity databases for machine learning (ML), (ii) ML-enabled models for prediction and analysis of performance and operational behavior, and (iii) a DT architecture that integrates the numerical models in terms of a computing infrastructure and provides data pipelines and interfaces for the DT's data exchanges with the real world, its dynamic updating, and uncertainty quantification. The decline in regeneration efficiency after birth in mammals is a significant roadblock for regenerative medicine in tissue repair. We previously developed a computational agent based-model (ABM) that recapitulates mechanical interactions between cells and the extracellular-matrix (ECM), to investigate key drivers of tissue repair in adults. Time calibration alongside a parameter sensitivity analysis of the model suggested that an early and transient decrease in ECM cross-linking guides tissue repair toward regeneration. Consistent with the computational model, transient inhibition or stimulation of fiber cross-linking for the first six days after subcutaneous adipose tissue (AT) resection in adult mice led to regenerative or scar healing, respectively. Therefore, this work positions the computational model as a predictive tool for tissue regeneration that with further development will behave as a digital twin of our in vivo model. Ports are of great significance in processing cargo containers and facilitating global marine logistics. Nevertheless, the susceptibility of the container shipping network for hazardous cargo is likely to intensify in the event of a significant disruption at a major port, such as adverse weather conditions, inadequate management practices, or unforeseen catastrophes. Such situations require the deployment of port protection emergency response and prevention in advance. This study proposes a digital twin (DT) model that employs extensive and trajectory data within containers to comprehensively analyze the occurrence of hazardous cargo failures within the port storage process. The virtual models of physical entities in the port are created through a data-driven approach, and the behavior of these entities in a port environment with big data is then simulated. A combination of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm is employed to provide predictions for the service layer of the DT system. The predicted correlation coefficients of temperature and humidity in the container reach 0.9855 and 0.9181, respectively. The developed system driven by DT models integrated with a CNN and the LSTM algorithm can more effectively assist the safety manager in achieving prevention in port operations. Recently, extensive research has been conducted on generating virtual training data in a digital twin-based simulator to reduce the time and cost associated with acquiring high-quality training data necessary for autonomous driving. In this study, we propose an efficient method of generating synthetic training datasets for autonomous driving by combining real-world and virtual training data. Specifically, we propose a method of implementing a digital twin-based autonomous driving simulator, collecting large amounts of virtual training data using its camera sensor, and generating synthetic training datasets by combining virtual and real-world training data in various ratios. The effectiveness of these datasets is then validated in deep learning applications, particularly for detecting traffic lights and signal information. Validation results indicate that synthetic training datasets significantly improve deep learning performance, provided they include a sufficient amount of real-world training data to avoid class imbalance issues. A comprehensive digital transformation has been undergone by the oil and gas industry, wherein digital twins are leveraged to enable real-time data analysis, providing predictive and diagnostic engineering insights. The potential for developing intelligent oil and gas fields is substantial with the implementation of digital twins. A digital twin framework for gear rack drilling rigs is proposed, built upon an understanding of the digital twin composition and characteristics of the gear rack drilling rig lifting system. The framework encompasses descriptions of digital twin characteristics specific to drilling rigs, the application environment, and behavioral rules. The modeling approach integrates mechanism modeling, real-time performance response, instantaneous data transmission, and data visualization. To illustrate this framework, exemplary case studies involving the transmission unit and support unit of the lifting system are presented. Mechanism models are constructed to analyze dynamic gear performance and support unit response. Real-time data transmission is facilitated through sensor-based monitoring, enhancing the prediction speed and accuracy of dynamic performance through a synergy of mechanism modeling, machine learning, and real-time data analysis. The digital twin of the lifting system is visualized utilizing the Unity3D platform. Furthermore, functionalities on data acquisition, processing, and visualization across diverse application scenarios are encapsulated into modular components, streamlining the creation of high-fidelity digital twins. The frameworks and modeling methodologies presented herein can serve as a foundational and methodological guide for the exploration and implementation of digital twin technology within the oil and gas industry, ultimately fostering its advancement in this sector. Resistive Random Access Memory (RRAM) has gained considerable momentum due to its non-volatility and energy efficiency. Material and device scientists have been proposing novel material stacks that can mimic the "ideal memristor" which can deliver performance, energy efficiency, reliability and accuracy. However, designing RRAM-based systems is challenging. Engineering a new material stack, designing a device, and experimenting takes significant time for material and device researchers. Furthermore, the acceptability of the device is ultimately decided at the system level. We see a gap here where there is a need for facilitating material and device researchers with a "push button" modeling framework that allows to evaluate the efficacy of the device at system level during early device design stages. Speed, accuracy, and adaptability are the fundamental requirements of this modelling framework. In this paper, we propose a digital twin (DT)-like modeling framework that automatically creates RRAM device models from device measurement data. Furthermore, the model incorporates the peripheral circuit to ensure accurate energy and performance evaluations. We demonstrate the DT generation and DT usage for multiple RRAM technologies and applications and illustrate the achieved performance of our GPU implementation. We conclude with the application of our modeling approach to measurement data from two distinct fabricated devices, validating its effectiveness in a neural network processing an Electrocardiogram (ECG) dataset and incorporating Fault Aware Training (FAT). The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme is an ambitious but challenging endeavour to design and deliver a prototype fusion power plant. It is a rapid, fast-moving programme, designing a first of a kind device in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) environment, and digital tools play a pivotal role in managing and navigating this space. Digital helps manage the complexity and sheer volume of information. Advanced modelling and simulation techniques provide a platform for designers to explore various scenarios and iteratively refine designs, providing insights into the intricate interplay of requirements, constraints and design factors across physics, technology and engineering domains and aiding informed decision-making amidst uncertainties. It also provides a means of building confidence in the new scientific, technological and engineering solutions, given that a full-scale-integrated precursor test is not feasible, almost by definition. The digital strategy for STEP is built around a vision of a digital twin of the whole plant. This will evolve from the current digital shadow formed by system architecting codes and complex workflows and will be underpinned by developing capabilities in plasma, materials and engineering simulation, data management, advanced control, industrial cybersecurity, regulation, digital technologies and related digital disciplines. These capabilities will help address the key challenges of managing the complexity and quantity of information, improving the reliability and robustness of the current digital shadow and developing an understanding of its validity and performance. Wind power generation has become an indispensable part of the power supply side of the power grid. Due to the intermittent and uncertain characteristics of wind energy, short-term wind power prediction plays an important role in the stable operation of power system. By constructing the digital twin model, real-time and high-precision prediction of wind energy is realized. First, the genetic algorithmsupport vector machine (GA-SVM) algorithm is used to build the model. Multidimensional sensors and meteorological stations of the virtual wind power generation system collected the meteorological data of the environment and updated the meteorological history database at the same time. Second, based on the collected meteorological data, the preliminary prediction results are obtained, and by searching in the historical database, the predicted value and the actual output value of wind turbines or wind farms under similar conditions are obtained. Finally, the prediction results of the GA-SVM are modified to obtain the predicted value of the digital twin model. Novel research on food perception is required for long-term space exploration. There is limited research on food/beverage sensory analysis in space and space-simulated conditions, with many studies presenting biases in sensory and statistical methods. This study used univariate and multivariate analysis on data from pick-and-eat leafy greens to assess self-reported and biometric consumer sensory analysis in simulated microgravity using reclining chairs and space-immersive environments. According to ANOVA (p < 0.05), there were significant differences between interaction room × position for head movements; besides, there were non-significant differences in the interaction samples × environment. On the other hand, there were significant differences in the sample×position interaction for all liking attributes. Results from multivariate analysis showed effects on self-reported, physiological, and emotional responses of samples in space-related positions and environments related to sensory perception changes. Non-invasive biometrics could offer a powerful tool for developing digital twins to assess genetically modified plants and plant-based food/beverages for long-term space exploration. Computational models can be at the basis of new powerful technologies for studying and classifying disorders like pre-eclampsia, where it is difficult to distinguish pre-eclamptic patients from non-pre-eclamptic based on pressure when patients have a track record of hypertension. Computational models now enable a detailed analysis of how pregnancy affects the cardiovascular system. Therefore, new non-invasive biomarkers were developed that can aid the classification of pre-eclampsia through the integration of six different measured non-invasive cardiovascular signals. Datasets of 21 pregnant women (no early onset pre-eclampsia, n = 12; early onset pre-eclampsia, n = 9) were used to create personalised cardiovascular models through computational modelling resulting in predictions of blood pressure and flow waveforms in all major and minor vessels of the utero-ovarian system. The analysis performed revealed that the new predictors PPI (pressure pulsatility index) and RI (resistance index) calculated in arcuate and radial/spiral arteries are able to differentiate between the 2 groups of women (t-test scores of p <.001) better than PI (pulsatility index) and RI (Doppler calculated in the uterine artery) for both supervised and unsupervised classification. In conclusion, two novel high-performing biomarkers for the classification of pre-eclampsia have been identified based on blood velocity and pressure predictions in the smaller placental vasculatures where non-invasive measurements are not feasible. The global fashion industry is undergoing rapid digitisation in which new Industry 4.0 technologies are changing the way fashion is designed and produced. The Australian fashion industry is considered to be slow in adopting these new technologies. The purpose of this research study is to investigate the current acceptability of Industry 4.0 technologies and the barriers to adoption within Australia. Data from forty-nine fashion organisations were obtained using a technology acceptance model (TAM) survey and a series of ten semi-structured interviews. The TAM survey results indicate that the industry accepts Industry 4.0 technologies to be useful and somewhat easy to use; however, technologies such as autonomous robotics, sensor and digital twin technologies are currently underutilised. Providing further insight, the interviews highlighted the key barriers to be the lack of industry leadership, misaligned knowledge and skills within higher education, and issues in the accessibility and scalability of technical skills and capabilities. Green hydrogen is a potential contributor to a more sustainable transportation system. In this paper, we present our experiences and insights gained from an industrial-scale green hydrogen refilling station, marked by the innovative hybrid Edge–Cloud electrolyser system (EMS) employed in this context. Hybrid EMS can improve system performance, adapt to dynamic conditions, and continuously improve efficiency, even under unpredictable load and low storage situations. It also allows the centralized monitoring of future hydrogen production sites to facilitate the operation and maintenance and, in the long-term vision, to enable the joint coordination of the plants flexibilities in the service market as a virtual plant, thus increasing the cost efficiency. The first quarter of the 21st century has witnessed many technological innovations in various sectors. Likewise, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered the acceleration of digital transformation in organizations driven by artificial intelligence and communication technologies in Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0. Aiming at the construction of digital twins, virtual representations of a physical system allow real-time bidirectional communication. This will allow the monitoring of operations, identification of possible failures, and decision making based on technical evidence. In this study, a fault diagnosis solution is proposed, based on the construction of a digital twin, for a cloud-based Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) system contemplating the control of electro-hydrostatic actuators (EHAs). The system was supported by a deep learning model using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for an effective diagnostic approach. The implemented study considers data preparation and integration and system development and application to evaluate the performance against the fault diagnosis problem. According to the results obtained, positive results are shown in the construction of the digital twin using a deep learning model for the fault diagnosis problem of an active EHA-IIoT configuration. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for implementing digital twins in aircraft lifecycle management, with a focus on using data-driven models to enhance decision-making and operational efficiency. The proposed framework integrates cutting-edge technologies such as IoT sensors, big data analytics, machine learning, 6G communication, and cloud computing to create a robust digital twin ecosystem. This paper explores the key components of the framework, including lifecycle phases, new technologies, and models for digital twins.
