In this work, we define a class of models to understand the impact of population size on opinion formation dynamics, a phenomenon usually related to group conformity. To this end, we introduce a new kinetic model in which the interaction frequency is weighted by the kinetic density. In the quasi-invariant regime, this model reduces to a Kaniadakis-Quarati-type equation with nonlinear drift, originally introduced for the dynamics of bosons in a spatially homogeneous setting. From the obtained PDE for the evolution of the opinion density, we determine the regime of parameters for which a critical mass exists and triggers blow-up of the solution. Therefore, the model is capable of describing strong conformity phenomena in cases where the total density of individuals holding a given opinion exceeds a fixed critical size. In the final part, several numerical experiments demonstrate the features of the introduced class of models and the related consensus effects.

The principle behind magnetic fusion is to confine high temperature plasma inside a device in such a way that the nuclei of deuterium and tritium joining together can release energy. The high temperatures generated needs the plasma to be isolated from the wall of the device to avoid damages and the scope of external magnetic fields is to achieve this goal. In this paper, to face this challenge from a numerical perspective, we propose an instantaneous control mathematical approach to steer a plasma into a given spatial region. From the modeling point of view, we focus on the Vlasov equation in a bounded domain with self induced electric field and an external strong magnetic field. The main feature of the control strategy employed is that it provides a feedback on the equation of motion based on an instantaneous prediction of the discretized system. This permits to directly embed the minimization of a given cost functional into the particle interactions of the corresponding Vlasov model. The numerical results demonstrate the validity of our control approach and the capability of an external magnetic field, even if in a simplified setting, to lead the plasma far from the boundaries.

This paper deals with the problem of simulating dense dispersed systems composed by large numbers of particles undergoing ballistic aggregation. The most classical approaches for dealing with such problems are represented by the so-called event-driven methods. Despite being more accurate, these methods become computationally very expensive as the number of particles increases. Typically, their computational cost is proportional to the square of the number of particles and thus they become extremely demanding as soon as this number becomes sufficiently large. An alternative approach, called time-stepping, consists in evolving the problem over small time-intervals and to handle all collisions occurring during each time interval simultaneously. In this work, we follow this second direction and we introduce a new time stepping method which recasts the problem of the multiple collisions in a minimization framework. The objective of this work is twofold, first to show that the statistical description of the resulting aggregates obtained with this new time stepping method is sufficiently close to that of the event driven methods. The second goal consists in showing that the computational performance considerably improve when the number of particles becomes sufficiently large. Numerical results obtained in the case of spherical particles moving in a two dimensional box show that these two properties are indeed satisfied by this new method.

Opinion dynamics is an important and very active area of research that delves into the complex processes through which individuals form and modify their opinions within a social context. The ability to comprehend and unravel the mechanisms that drive opinion formation is of great significance for predicting a wide range of social phenomena such as political polarization, the diffusion of misinformation, the formation of public consensus, and the emergence of collective behaviors. In this paper, we aim to contribute to that field by introducing a novel mathematical model that specifically accounts for the influence of social media networks on opinion dynamics. With the rise of platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and many others, social networks have become significant arenas where opinions are shared, discussed, and potentially altered. To this aim after an analytical construction of our new model and through incorporation of real-life data from Twitter, we calibrate the model parameters to accurately reflect the dynamics that unfold in social media, showing in particular the role played by the so-called influencers in driving individual opinions towards predetermined directions.

Nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations play a major role in modeling large systems of interacting particles with a proved effectiveness in describing real world phenomena ranging from classical fields such as fluids and plasma to social and biological dynamics. Their mathematical formulation has often to face with physical forces having a significant random component or with particles living in a random environment which characterization may be deduced through experimental data and leading consequently to uncertainty-dependent equilibrium states. In this work, to address the problem of effectively solving stochastic Fokker-Planck systems, we will construct a new equilibrium preserving scheme through a micro-macro approach based on stochastic Galerkin methods. The resulting numerical method, contrarily to the direct application of a stochastic Galerkin projection in the parameter space of the unknowns of the underlying Fokker-Planck model, leads to highly accurate description of the uncertainty dependent large time behavior. Several numerical tests in the context of collective behavior for social and life sciences are presented to assess the validity of the present methodology against standard ones.

We propose a novel Structure-Preserving Discontinuous Galerkin (SPDG) operator that recovers at the discrete level the algebraic property related to the divergence of the curl of a vector field, which is typically referred to as div-curl problem. A staggered Cartesian grid is adopted in 3D, where the vector field is naturally defined at the corners of the control volume, while its curl is evaluated as a cell-centered quantity. Firstly, the curl operator is rewritten as the divergence of a tensor, hence allowing compatible finite difference schemes to be devised and to be proven to mimic the algebraic div-curl property. Successively, a high order DG divergence operator is built upon integration by parts, so that the structure-preserving finite difference div-curl operator is exactly retrieved for first order discretizations. We further demonstrate that the novel SPDG schemes are capable of obtaining a zero div-curl identity with machine precision from second up to sixth order accuracy. In a second part, we show the applicability of these SPDG methods by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations written in vortex-stream formulation. This hyperbolic system deals with divergence-free involutions related to the velocity and vorticity field as well as to the stream function, thus it provides an ideal setting for the validation of the novel schemes. A compatible discretization of the numerical viscosity is also proposed in order to maintain the structure-preserving property of the div-curl DG operators even in the presence of artificial or physical dissipative terms. Finally, to overcome the time step restriction dictated by the viscous sub-system, Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta time stepping techniques are tailored to handle the SPDG framework.

The construction of efficient methods for uncertainty quantification in kinetic equations represents a challenge due to the high dimensionality of the models: often the computational costs involved become prohibitive. On the other hand, precisely because of the curse of dimensionality, the construction of simplified models capable of providing approximate solutions at a computationally reduced cost has always represented one of the main research strands in the field of kinetic equations. Approximations based on suitable closures of the moment equations or on simplified collisional models have been studied by many authors. In the context of uncertainty quantification, it is therefore natural to take advantage of such models in a multi-fidelity setting where the original kinetic equation represents the high-fidelity model, and the simplified models define the low-fidelity surrogate models. The scope of this article is to survey some recent results about multi-fidelity methods for kinetic equations that are able to accelerate the solution of the uncertainty quantification process by combining high-fidelity and low-fidelity model evaluations with particular attention to the case of compressible and incompressible hydrodynamic limits. We will focus essentially on two classes of strategies: multi-fidelity control variates methods and bi-fidelity stochastic collocation methods. The various approaches considered are analyzed in light of the different surrogate models used and the different numerical techniques adopted. Given the relevance of the specific choice of the surrogate model, an application-oriented approach has been chosen in the presentation.

We introduce and discuss a system of one-dimensional kinetic equations describing the influence of higher education in the social stratification of a multi-agent society. The system is obtained by coupling a model for knowledge formation with a kinetic description of the social climbing in which the parameters characterizing the elementary interactions leading to the formation of a social elite are assumed to depend on the degree of knowledge/education of the agents. In addition, we discuss the case in which the education level of an individual is function of the position occupied in the social ranking. With this last assumption we obtain a fully coupled model in which knowledge and social status influence each other. In the last part, we provide several numerical experiments highlighting the role of education in reducing social inequalities and in promoting social mobility.

In this survey we report some recent results in the mathematical modeling of epidemic phenomena through the use of kinetic equations. We initially consider models of interaction between agents in which social characteristics play a key role in the spread of an epidemic, such as the age of individuals, the number of social contacts, and their economic wealth. Subsequently, for such models, we discuss the possibility of containing the epidemic through an appropriate optimal control formulation based on the policy maker's perception of the progress of the epidemic. The role of uncertainty in the data is also discussed and addressed. Finally, the kinetic modeling is extended to spatially dependent settings using multiscale transport models that can characterize the impact of movement dynamics on epidemic advancement on both one-dimensional networks and realistic two-dimensional geographic settings.

Deterministic solutions of the Boltzmann equation represent a real challenge due to the enormous computational effort which is required to produce such simulations and often stochastic methods such as Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) are used instead due to their lower computational cost. In this work, we show that combining different technologies for the discretization of the velocity space and of the physical space coupled with suitable time integration techniques, it is possible to compute very precise deterministic approximate solutions of the Boltzmann model in different regimes, from extremely rarefied to dense fluids, with CFL conditions only driven by the hyperbolic transport term. To that aim, we develop modal Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) Implicit-Explicit Runge Kutta schemes (DG-IMEX-RK) and Implicit-Explicit Linear Multistep Methods based on Backward-Finite-Differences (DG-IMEX-BDF) for solving the Boltzmann model on multidimensional unstructured meshes. The solution of the Boltzmann collision operator is obtained through fast spectral methods, while the transport term in the governing equations is discretized relying on an explicit shock-capturing DG method on polygonal tessellations in the physical space. A novel class of WENO-type limiters, based on a shifting of the moments of inertia for each zone of the mesh, is used to control spurious oscillations of the DG solution across discontinuities. The order of convergence is numerically measured for different regimes and found to agree with the theoretical findings. The new methods are validated considering two-dimensional benchmark test cases typically used in the fluid dynamics community. A prototype engineering problem consisting of a supersonic flow around a NACA 0012 airfoil with space-time-dependent boundary conditions is also presented for which the pressure coefficients are measured.

In this paper we introduce a space-dependent multiscale model to describe the spatial spread of an infectious disease under uncertain data with particular interest in simulating the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy. While virus transmission is ruled by a SEIAR type compartmental model, within our approach the population is given by a sum of commuters moving on a extra-urban scale and non commuters interacting only on the smaller urban scale. A transport dynamic of the commuter population at large spatial scales, based on kinetic equations, is coupled with a diffusion model for non commuters at the urban scale. Thanks to a suitable scaling limit, the kinetic transport model used to describe the dynamics of commuters, within a given urban area coincides with the diffusion equations that characterize the movement of non-commuting individuals. Because of the high uncertainty in the data reported in the early phase of the epidemic, the presence of random inputs in both the initial data and the epidemic parameters is included in the model. A robust numerical method is designed to deal with the presence of multiple scales and the uncertainty quantification process. In our simulations, we considered a realistic geographical domain, describing the Lombardy region, in which the size of the cities, the number of infected individuals, the average number of daily commuters moving from one city to another, and the epidemic aspects are taken into account through a calibration of the model parameters based on the actual available data. The results show that the model is able to describe correctly the main features of the spatial expansion of the first wave of COVID-19 in northern Italy.

In this work, we present a family of time and space high order finite volume schemes for the solution of the full Boltzmann equation. The velocity space is approximated by using a discrete ordinate approach while the collisional integral is solved by spectral methods. The space reconstruction is realized by integrating the distribution function, describing the state of the system, over arbitrary shaped and closed control volumes using a Central Weighted ENO (CWENO) technique. Compared to other reconstruction methods, this approach permits to keep compact stencil sizes which is a remarkable property in the context of kinetic equations due to the considerable demand of computational resources. The full discretization is then obtained by combining the previous phase-space approximation with high order Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) Runge Kutta schemes. These methods guarantee stability, accuracy and preservation of the asymptotic state. Comparisons of the Boltzmann model with simpler relaxation type kinetic models (like BGK) is proposed showing the capability of the Boltzmann equation to capture different physical solutions. The theoretical order of convergence is numerically measured in different regimes and the methods are tested on several standard two-dimensional benchmark problems in comparison with Direct Simulation Monte Carlo results. The article ends with a prototype engineering problem consisting of a subsonic and a supersonic flow around a NACA 0012 airfoil. All test cases are run with MPI parallelization on several threads, thus making the proposed methods suitable for parallel distributed memory supercomputers.

In this paper, we derive second order hydrodynamic traffic models from kinetic-controlled equations for driver-assist vehicles. At the vehicle level we take into account two main control strategies synthesising the action of adaptive cruise controls and cooperative adaptive cruise controls. The resulting macroscopic dynamics fulfil the anisotropy condition introduced in the celebrated Aw-Rascle-Zhang model. Unlike other models based on heuristic arguments, our approach unveils the main physical aspects behind frequently used hydrodynamic traffic models and justifies the structure of the resulting macroscopic equations incorporating driver-assist vehicles. Numerical insights show that the presence of driver-assist vehicles produces an aggregate homogenisation of the mean flow speed, which may also be steered towards a suitable desired speed in such a way that optimal flows and traffic stabilisation are reached., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

In this work we propose a novel space-dependent multiscale model for the spread of infectious diseases in a two-dimensional spatial context on realistic geographical scenarios. The model couples a system of kinetic transport equations describing a population of commuters moving on a large scale (extra-urban) with a system of diffusion equations characterizing the non commuting population acting over a small scale (urban). The modeling approach permits to avoid unrealistic effects of traditional diffusion models in epidemiology, like infinite propagation speed on large scales and mass migration dynamics. A construction based on the transport formalism of kinetic theory allows to give a clear model interpretation to the interactions between infected and susceptible in compartmental space-dependent models. In addition, in a suitable scaling limit, our approach permits to couple the two populations through a consistent diffusion model acting at the urban scale. A discretization of the system based on finite volumes on unstructured grids, combined with an asymptotic preserving method in time, shows that the model is able to describe correctly the main features of the spatial expansion of an epidemic. An application to the initial spread of COVID-19 is finally presented.

We introduce a class of one-dimensional linear kinetic equations of Boltzmann and Fokker--Planck type, describing the dynamics of individuals of a multi-agent society questing for high status in the social hierarchy. At the Boltzmann level, the microscopic variation of the status of agents around a universal desired target, is built up introducing as main criterion for the change of status a suitable value function in the spirit of the prospect theory of Kahneman and Twersky. In the asymptotics of grazing interactions, the solution density of the Boltzmann type kinetic equation is shown to converge towards the solution of a Fokker--Planck type equation with variable coefficients of diffusion and drift, characterized by the mathematical properties of the value function. The steady states of the statistical distribution of the social status predicted by the Fokker--Planck equations belong to the class of Amoroso distributions with Pareto tails, which correspond to the emergence of a \emph{social elite}. The details of the microscopic kinetic interaction allow to clarify the meaning of the various parameters characterizing the resulting equilibrium. Numerical results then show that the steady state of the underlying kinetic equation is close to Amoroso distribution even in an intermediate regime in which interactions are not grazing.

We study the derivation of second order macroscopic traffic models from kinetic descriptions. In particular, we recover the celebrated Aw-Rascle model as the hydrodynamic limit of an Enskog-type kinetic equation out of a precise characterisation of the microscopic binary interactions among the vehicles. Unlike other derivations available in the literature, our approach unveils the multiscale physics behind the Aw-Rascle model. This further allows us to generalise it to a new class of second order macroscopic models complying with the Aw-Rascle consistency condition, namely the fact that no wave should travel faster than the mean traffic flow., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures

We consider the development of high order space and time numerical methods based on Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) multistep time integrators for hyperbolic systems with relaxation. More specifically, we consider hyperbolic balance laws in which the convection and the source term may have very different time and space scales. As a consequence the nature of the asymptotic limit changes completely, passing from a hyperbolic to a parabolic system. From the computational point of view, standard numerical methods designed for the fluid-dynamic scaling of hyperbolic systems with relaxation present several drawbacks and typically lose efficiency in describing the parabolic limit regime. In this work, in the context of Implicit-Explicit linear multistep methods we construct high order space-time discretizations which are able to handle all the different scales and to capture the correct asymptotic behavior, independently from its nature, without time step restrictions imposed by the fast scales. Several numerical examples confirm the theoretical analysis.

In most countries, alcohol consumption distributions have been shown to possess universal features. Their unimodal right-skewed shape is usually modeled in terms of the Lognormal distribution, which is easy to fit, test, and modify. However, empirical distributions often deviate considerably from the Lognormal model, and both Gamma and Weibull distributions appear to better describe the survey data. In this paper we explain the appearance of these distributions by means of classical methods of kinetic theory of multi-agent systems. The microscopic variation of alcohol consumption of agents around a universal \emph{social} accepted value of consumption, is built up introducing as main criterion for consumption a suitable value function in the spirit of the prospect theory of Kahneman and Twersky. The mathematical properties of the value function then determine the unique macroscopic equilibrium which results to be a generalized Gamma distribution. The development of efficient numerical methods for kinetic equations with stochastic parameters is a challenge due to the high dimensionality of the problem. Recently we introduced a multiscale control variate strategy which is capable to accelerate considerably the slow convergence of standard Monte Carlo methods for uncertainty quantification. Here we generalize this class of methods to the case of multiple control variates. Kinetic equations play a major rule in modeling large systems of interacting particles. Uncertainties may be due to various reasons, like lack of knowledge on the microscopic interaction details or incomplete informations at the boundaries. These uncertainties, however, contribute to the curse of dimensionality and the development of efficient numerical methods is a challenge. In this paper we consider the construction of novel multi-scale methods for such problems which, thanks to a control variate approach, are capable to reduce the variance of standard Monte Carlo techniques.

In this work, we consider the development of implicit explicit total variation diminishing (TVD) methods (also termed SSP: strong stability preserving) for the compressible isentropic Euler system in the low Mach number regime. The scheme proposed is asymptotically stable with a CFL condition independent from the Mach number and it degenerates in the low Mach number regime to a consistent discretization of the incompressible system. Since, it has been proved that implicit schemes of order higher than one cannot be TVD (SSP) \cite{GotShuTad}, we construct a new paradigm of implicit time integrators by coupling first order in time schemes with second order ones in the same spirit as highly accurate shock capturing TVD methods in space. For this particular class of schemes, the TVD property is first proved on a linear model advection equation and then extended to the isentropic Euler case. The result is a method which interpolates from the first to the second order both in space and time, which preserves the monotonicity of the solution, highly accurate for all choices of the Mach number and with a time step only restricted by the non stiff part of the system. In the last part, we show thanks to one and two dimensional test cases that the method indeed possesses the claimed properties.

Kinetic equations play a major rule in modeling large systems of interacting particles. Recently the legacy of classical kinetic theory found novel applications in socio-economic and life sciences, where processes characterized by large groups of agents exhibit spontaneous emergence of social structures. Well-known examples are the formation of clusters in opinion dynamics, the appearance of inequalities in wealth distributions, flocking and milling behaviors in swarming models, synchronization phenomena in biological systems and lane formation in pedestrian traffic. The construction of kinetic models describing the above processes, however, has to face the difficulty of the lack of fundamental principles since physical forces are replaced by empirical social forces. These empirical forces are typically constructed with the aim to reproduce qualitatively the observed system behaviors, like the emergence of social structures, and are at best known in terms of statistical information of the modeling parameters. For this reason the presence of random inputs characterizing the parameters uncertainty should be considered as an essential feature in the modeling process. In this survey we introduce several examples of such kinetic models, that are mathematically described by nonlinear Vlasov and Fokker--Planck equations, and present different numerical approaches for uncertainty quantification which preserve the main features of the kinetic solution., Comment: To appear in "Uncertainty Quantification for Hyperbolic and Kinetic Equations"

This paper investigates cells proliferation dynamics in small tumor cell aggregates using an individual based model (IBM). The simulation model is designed to study the morphology of the cell population and of the cell lineages as well as the impact of the orientation of the division plane on this morphology. Our IBM model is based on the hypothesis that cells are incompressible objects that grow in size and divide once a threshold size is reached, and that newly born cell adhere to the existing cell cluster. We performed comparisons between the simulation model and experimental data by using several statistical indicators. The results suggest that the emergence of particular morphologies can be explained by simple mechanical interactions.

In this paper we deal with the extension of the Fast Kinetic Scheme (FKS) [J. Comput. Phys., Vol. 255, 2013, pp 680-698] originally constructed for solving the BGK equation, to the more challenging case of the Boltzmann equation. The scheme combines a robust and fast method for treating the transport part based on an innovative Lagrangian technique supplemented with fast spectral schemes to treat the collisional operator by means of an operator splitting approach. This approach along with several implementation features related to the parallelization of the algorithm permits to construct an efficient simulation tool which is numerically tested against exact and reference solutions on classical problems arising in rarefied gas dynamic. We present results up to the $3$D$\times 3$D case for unsteady flows for the Variable Hard Sphere model which may serve as benchmark for future comparisons between different numerical methods for solving the multidimensional Boltzmann equation. For this reason, we also provide for each problem studied details on the computational cost and memory consumption as well as comparisons with the BGK model or the limit model of compressible Euler equations., Comment: 39 pages, 21 figures, 7 tables

In this paper we genealize the fast semi-Lagrangian scheme developed in [J. Comput. Phys., Vol. 255, 2013, pp 680-698] to the case of high order reconstructions of the distribution function. The original first order accurate semi-Lagrangian scheme is supplemented with polynomial reconstructions of the distribution function and of the collisional operator leading to an effective high order accurate numerical scheme for all regimes, from extremely rarefied gas to highly collisional siuation. The main idea relies on updating at each time step the extreme points of the distribution function for each velocity of the lattice instead of updating the solution in the cell centers, these extremes points being located at different positions for any fixed velocity of the lattice. The result is a class of scheme which permits to preserve the structure of the solution over very long times compared to existing schemes from the literature. We propose a proof of concept of this new approach along with numerical tests and comparisons with classical numerical methods.

We consider the development of high order asymptotic-preserving linear multistep methods for kinetic equations and related problems. The methods are first developed for BGK-like kinetic models and then extended to the case of the full Boltzmann equation. The behavior of the schemes in the Navier-Stokes regime is also studied and compatibility conditions derived. We show that, compared to IMEX Runge-Kutta methods, the IMEX multistep schemes have several advantages due to the absence of coupling conditions and to the greater computational efficiency. We study a system of self-propelled particles which interact with their neighbors via alignment and repulsion. The particle velocities result from self-propulsion and repulsion by close neighbors. The direction of self-propulsion is continuously aligned to that of the neighbors, up to some noise. A continuum model is derived starting from a mean-field kinetic description of the particle system. It leads to a set of non conservative hydrodynamic equations. We provide a numerical validation of the continuum model by comparison with the particle model. We also provide comparisons with other self-propelled particle models with alignment and repulsion.

We consider an Individual-Based Model for self-rotating particles interacting through local alignment and investigate its macroscopic limit. This model describes self-propelled particles moving in the plane and trying to synchronize their rotation motion with their neighbors. It combines the Kuramoto model of synchronization and the Vicsek model of swarm formation. We study the mean-field kinetic and hydrodynamic limits of this system within two different scalings. In the small angular velocity regime, the resulting model is a slight modification of the 'Self-Organized Hydrodynamic' model which has been previously introduced by the first author. In the large angular velocity case, a new type of hydrodynamic model is obtained. A preliminary study of the linearized stability is proposed.

In a recent paper we presented a new ultra efficient numerical method for solving kinetic equations of the Boltzmann type (G. Dimarco, R. Loubere, Towards an ultra efficient kinetic scheme. Part I: basics on the 689 BGK equation, J. Comp. Phys., (2013), http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jcp.2012.10.058). The key idea, on which the method relies, is to solve the collision part on a grid and then to solve exactly the transport part by following the characteristics backward in time. On the contrary to classical semi-Lagrangian methods one does not need to reconstruct the distribution function at each time step. This allows to tremendously reduce the computational cost and to perform efficient numerical simulations of kinetic equations up to the six dimensional case without parallelization. However, the main drawback of the method developed was the loss of spatial accuracy close to the fluid limit. In the present work, we modify the scheme in such a way that it is able to preserve the high order spatial accuracy for extremely rarefied and fluid regimes. In particular, in the fluid limit, the method automatically degenerates into a high order method for the compressible Euler equations. Numerical examples are presented which validate the method, show the higher accuracy with respect to the previous approach and measure its efficiency with respect to well known schemes (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo, Finite Volume, MUSCL, WENO).

In this work we propose a generalization of the Moment Guided Monte Carlo method developed in [11]. This approach permits to reduce the variance of the particle methods through a matching with a set of suitable macroscopic moment equations. In order to guarantee that the moment equations provide the correct solutions, they are coupled to the kinetic equation through a non equilibrium term. Here, at the contrary to the previous work in which we considered the simplified BGK operator, we deal with the full Boltzmann operator. Moreover, we introduce an hybrid setting which permits to entirely remove the resolution of the kinetic equation in the limit of infinite number of collisions and to consider only the solution of the compressible Euler equation. This modification additionally reduce the statistical error with respect to our previous work and permits to perform simulations of non equilibrium gases using only a few number of particles. In this paper we present a new ultra efficient numerical method for solving kinetic equations. In this preliminary work, we present the scheme in the case of the BGK relaxation operator. The scheme, being based on a splitting technique between transport and collision, can be easily extended to other collisional operators as the Boltzmann collision integral or to other kinetic equations such as the Vlasov equation. The key idea, on which the method relies, is to solve the collision part on a grid and then to solve exactly the transport linear part by following the characteristics backward in time. The main difference between the method proposed and semi-Lagrangian methods is that here we do not need to reconstruct the distribution function at each time step. This allows to tremendously reduce the computational cost of the method and it permits for the first time, to the author's knowledge, to compute solutions of full six dimensional kinetic equations on a single processor laptop machine. Numerical examples, up to the full three dimensional case, are presented which validate the method and assess its efficiency in 1D, 2D and 3D.

In this note we discuss the construction of high order asymptotic preserving numerical schemes for the Boltzmann equation. The methods are based on the use of Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta methods combined with a penalization technique recently introduced in [F. Filbet, S. Jin: A class of asymptotic preserving schemes for kinetic equations and related problems with stiff sources,J. Comp. Phys. 229, (2010), pp. 7625-7648.].

In the present work, we present a novel numerical algorithm to couple the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC) for the solution of the Boltzmann equation with a finite volume like method for the solution of the Euler equations. Recently we presented in [14],[16],[17] different methodologies which permit to solve fluid dynamics problems with localized regions of departure from thermodynamical equilibrium. The methods rely on the introduction of buffer zones which realize a smooth transition between the kinetic and the fluid regions. In this paper we extend the idea of buffer zones and dynamic coupling to the case of the Monte Carlo methods. To facilitate the coupling and avoid the onset of spurious oscillations in the fluid regions which are consequences of the coupling with a stochastic numerical scheme, we use a new technique which permits to reduce the variance of the particle methods [11]. In addition, the use of this method permits to obtain estimations of the breakdowns of the fluid models less affected by fluctuations and consequently to reduce the kinetic regions and optimize the coupling. In the last part of the paper several numerical examples are presented to validate the method and measure its computational performances.

We introduce a class of exponential Runge-Kutta integration methods for kinetic equations. The methods are based on a decomposition of the collision operator into an equilibrium and a non equilibrium part and are exact for relaxation operators of BGK type. For Boltzmann type kinetic equations they work uniformly for a wide range of relaxation times and avoid the solution of nonlinear systems of equations even in stiff regimes. We give sufficient conditions in order that such methods are unconditionally asymptotically stable and asymptotic preserving. Such stability properties are essential to guarantee the correct asymptotic behavior for small relaxation times. The methods also offer favorable properties such as nonnegativity of the solution and entropy inequality. For this reason, as we will show, the methods are suitable both for deterministic as well as probabilistic numerical techniques.
