Let $\pi$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of PGL($2n$) over a number field $F$, and $\eta$ the quadratic idele class character attached to a quadratic extension $E/F$. Guo and Jacquet conjectured a relation between the nonvanishing of $L(1/2,\pi)L(1/2, \pi \otimes \eta)$ for $\pi$ of symplectic type and the nonvanishing of certain GL($n,E$) periods. When $n=1$, this specializes to a well-known result of Waldspurger. We prove this conjecture, and related global results, under some local hypotheses using a simple relative trace formula. We then apply these global results to obtain local results on distinguished supercuspidal representations, which partially establish a conjecture of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash., Comment: 31 pages; to appear in Israel J. The outputs of the Human Genome Project (HGP) have enabled the development of clinical genomics. This chapter describes the background to modern genomics and the tools for polymorphism and mutation detection that are relevant to diagnostics. The strategies used for sequencing and mapping the human genome that were used to complete the HGP are summarised. Molecular methodologies, such as next-generation sequencing (NGS), whole-exome sequencing (WES) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and developments in bioinformatics are essential for the identification of pathogenic mutations. Together with genetic variant detection technologies, these approaches should continue to lead the discovery and development of high-precision and cost-effective diagnostic tests for the clinic and doctor's office.

Increasing amounts of molecular sequence data has produced challenges for computational biology and database management. This chapter introduces some of the key bioinformatics database resources and programs that have become pivotal to the progression of many branches of biological and medical sciences. Primary nucleic acid and amino acid sequence databases, such as GenBank and UniProt, are described along with more specialised databases, such as COSMIC and InterPro, that have been developed to address specific areas, such as cancer biology and protein family analysis. Parallel developments in textual knowledgebases, such as OMIM, and search tools, such as PubMed, enable the ready integration of experimental data with current medical and basic research and applications. Analytical software suites, such as BLAST and Align, are described which enable DNA or amino acid sequences to be searched against all known molecular sequences. Applied bioinformatics in the research laboratory is discussed in the context of the PCR. All of the database resources and software tools described in the chapter are freely available and generally simple to use.

DURING the 9th century unglazed pottery decorated with red or brown slip came into production along the middle Rhine. This pottery, known as Pingsdorf ware, was exported in large quantities to the North Sea region and even to the Baltic coast.2 By the 12th century red-painted pottery, often imitating Pingsdorf ware, was made at a number of sites in the Low Countries and western France.3It has long been known that painted pottery was manufactured throughout the medieval Islamic world, including north Africa, and isolated finds of painted ware have been published in Italy and Spain.4 Nevertheless, little attempt has been made to explore the possible connexions between painted pottery in the Mediterranean basin and western Europe,5 A serious obstacle to such an attempt is the inadequacy of most publications of Mediterranean finds. This paper offers an account of the painted wares in one area of the Mediterranean, peninsular Italy, and suggests that the pottery found there may indeed be related to the earlies...

La relazione presenta i risultati degli scavi condotti tra il 1977 e il 1981 presso le imponenti rovine note come Le Mura di Santo Stefano, situate vicino Anguillara Sabazia, appena 3 km a sud del Lago di Bracciano. La fase più antica di occupazione era relativa ad una fattoria di I secolo d.C. Intorno al 200 d.C. viene costruita una serie di strutture, compreso un edificio a pianta rettangolare su tre piani copiosamente decorato con diciannove tipi di marmo, suggerendo così che il complesso avesse un carattere lussuoso, possibilmente parte di un latifundium. Si hanno evidenze di ulteriori attività nel III o inizi IV secolo d.C. Nel IX secolo, dopo un periodo di abbandono, parte del complesso fu convertito nella chiesa di Santo Stefano. L'aula rettangolare fu rioccupata e le restanti rovine usate come cimitero. Si è dedotto che il sito possa aver funzionato come centro di una proprietà medievale, parte della domusculta papale, o in alternativa come un fundus di una struttura monastica. Nell'XI secolo il sito fu abbandonato, dopo ehe i resti di scheletri appartenenti ad almeno 90 individui, e le ossa di tre cani, furono interrati in un pozzo tappato con pezzi di sculture marmoree romane.

Let π be a cusp form on GL(2) over a number field F and let E be a quadratic extension of F. Denote by π E the base change of π to E and by Ω a unitary character of A × E / E × . We use the relative trace formula to give an explicit formula for L(1/2, π E ⊗ Ω) in terms of period integrals of Gross-Prasad test vectors. We give an application of this formula to equidistribution of geodesics on a hyperbolic 3-fold.

We give a method to explicitly determine the space of unramified Hilbert cusp forms of weight two, together with the action of Hecke, over a totally real number field of even degree and narrow class number one. In particular, one can determine the eigenforms in this space and compute their Hecke eigenvalues to any reasonable degree. As an application we compute this space of cusp forms for Q(root 509), and determine each eigenform in this space which has rational Hecke eigenvalues. We find that not all of these forms arise via base change from classical forms. To each such eigenform f we attach an elliptic curve with good reduction everywhere whose L-function agrees with that of f at every place.

The N-linked glycans on transferrin and α1-antitrypsin from patients with congenital disorders of glycosylation type I have increased fucosylation and branching relative to normal controls. The elevated levels of monofucosylated biantennary glycans are probably due to increased α-(1 → 6) fucosylation. The presence of bi- and trifucosylated triantennary and tetra-antennary glycans indicated that peripheral α-(1 → 3), as well as core α-(1 → 6), fucosylation is increased. Altered processing was observed on both the fully and underglycosylated glycoforms.

During the first millennium Be a new script appeared in the mountainous zone in the southern part of the Arabian peninsula. Together with the ruins of the great walled cities and splendid monuments, this script points to the rise of a group of complex societies which, at that time, played an important role in the historical events taking place between the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The self-assembly of three cosmetically active peptide amphiphiles C16-GHK, C16-KT, and C16-KTTKS (C16 denotes a hexadecyl, palmitoyl chain) used in commercial skin care products is examined. A range of spectroscopic, microscopic, and X-ray scattering methods is used to probe the secondary structure, aggregate morphology, and the nanostructure. Peptide amphiphile (PA) C16-KTTKS forms flat tapes and extended fibrillar structures with high β-sheet content. In contrast, C16-KT and C16-GHK exhibit crystal-like aggregates with, in the case of the latter PA, lower β-sheet content. All three PA samples show spacings from bilayer structures in small-angle X-ray scattering profiles, and all three have similar critical aggregation concentrations, this being governed by the lipid chain length. However, only C16-KTTKS is stained by Congo red, a diagnostic dye used to detect amyloid formation, and this PA also shows a highly aligned cross-β X-ray diffraction pattern consistent with the high β-sheet content in the self-assembled aggregates. These findings may provide important insights relevant to the role of self-assembled aggregates on the reported collagen-stimulating properties of these PAs.
