Infections caused by Campylobacter jejuni are rarely associated with extraintestinal complications. C. jejuni bacteremia is difficult to detect in patients with hematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy where the choice of appropriate antibiotic treatment is extremely important. We report two cases of C. jejuni bacteremia in Italian pediatric patients affected by acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Agreeing with the most recent epidemiological data, both clinical isolates showed a typical phenotypic antimicrobial resistance patterns with combined resistance to ciprofloxacin and tetracycline. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. jejuni isolation from the blood of ALL pediatric patients in Italy, and it provides important epidemiological information on this rare infection.

This chapter argues that the standard conception of Spinoza as a fellow-traveling mechanical philosopher and proto-scientific naturalist is misleading. 1 It argues, first, that Spinoza’s account of the proper method for the study of nature presented in the Theological-Political Treatise points away from the one commonly associated with the mechanical philosophy. Moreover, throughout his works Spinoza’s views on the very possibility of knowledge of nature are decidedly skeptical. Third, in the seventeenth-century debates over proper methods in the sciences, Spinoza sided with those who criticized the aspirations of the physico-mathematicians like Galileo, Huygens, Wallis, and Wren who thought the application of mathematics to nature was the way to make progress. In particular, he offers grounds for doubting their confidence in the significance of measurement as well as their piecemeal methodology. Along the way, this chapter offers a new interpretation of common notions in the context of treating Spinoza’s account of motion.

Abstract AIM OF THE STUDY: Based on their experience using Versajet for debridement of chronic wounds, the Authors set up a study protocol to verify whether the hydro-surgical cleansing could offer the possibility of taking tissue specimens suitable for diagnostic microbiological evaluation. The aims of the study were the following: MAIN PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of hydro-surgery in detecting the presence of microorganisms and measuring their load, as an alternative to conventional tissue sampling methods; SECONDARY PURPOSE: To set up an easier and less invasive diagnostic modality than surgical biopsy, even though likewise significant. RESULTS: The results of this study show that tissue specimen collection by hydro-aspiration using Versajet is comparable to biopsy sampling (and in some cases it can be even more reliable); moreover, it is not more time-consuming and is certainly less invasive. Compared to surgical biopsy, with such a method a greater amount of tissue may be collected; moreover, tissue specimens can be taken from a broader surface or, depending on the needs, from a more focused area on the margin or at the bottom of the wound

We have measured the temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the critical current density J(c)(H,T) in MgB2 thin films, in situ deposited by sputtering. Three-dimensional point like normal core pinning was evidenced by measurements of the magnetic dependence of the pinning forces independently from the superconducting and structural quality of the investigated films. The analysis of the experimental data in terms of the collective pinning model has pointed out the presence of a crossover magnetic field from a single vortex to a small vortex bundle pinning regime. A DeltaT(c) pinning mechanism, i.e., a pinning associated with spatial fluctuations of the transition temperature, has been evidenced by the temperature dependence of this crossover field, in agreement with previous observations performed on MgB2 bulk materials.
