Background: We aimed to verify the validity of the proportional recovery model for the lower extremity. Methods: We reviewed clinical data of patients enrolled in the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation between August 2012 and May 2015. Recovery proportion was calculated as the amount of motor recovery over initial motor impairment, measured as the Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Lower Extremity score. We used the logistic regression method to model the probability of achieving the full Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Lower Extremity score, whereby we considered the ceiling effect of the score. To show the difference in the prevalence of achieving the full Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Lower Extremity score between 3 and 6 months poststroke, we constructed a marginal model through the generalized estimating equation method. We also performed the propensity score matching analysis to show the dependency of recovery proportion on the initial motor deficit at 3 and 6 months poststroke. Results: We evaluated 1085 patients. The recovery proportions at 3 and 6 months poststroke were 0.67±0.42 and 0.75±0.39, respectively. A 1-unit decrease in the initial neurological impairment and the age at stroke onset increased the probability of achieving the full Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Lower Extremity score, which occurred at both 3 and 6 months poststroke. The prevalence of those who reach full lower limb motor recovery differs significantly between 3 and 6 months poststroke. We also found out that the recovery proportion at both 3 and 6 months poststroke is determined by the initial motor deficits of the lower limb. These results are not consistent with the proportional recovery model. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that the proportional recovery model for the lower limb is invalid.

To enable acceleration in 3D multi-echo gradient echo (mGRE) acquisition for myelin water imaging (MWI) by combining joint parallel imaging (JPI) and joint deep learning (JDL).We implemented a multistep reconstruction process using both advanced parallel imaging and deep learning network which can utilize joint spatiotemporal components between the multi-echo images to further accelerate 3D mGRE acquisition for MWI. In the first step, JPI was performed to estimate missing k-space lines. Next, JDL was implemented to reduce residual artifacts and produce high-fidelity reconstruction by using variable splitting optimization consisting of spatiotemporal denoiser block, data consistency block, and weighted average block. The proposed method was evaluated for MWI with 2D Cartesian uniform under-sampling for each echo, enabling scan times of up to approximately 2 min forThe proposed method showed acceptable MWI quality with improved quantitative values compared to both JPI and JDL methods individually. The improved performance of the proposed method was demonstrated by the low normalized mean-square error and high-frequency error norm values of the reconstruction with high similarity to the fully sampled MWI.Joint spatiotemporal reconstruction approach by combining JPI and JDL can achieve high acceleration factors for 3D mGRE-based MWI.

The purpose of this study is to identify the factors associated with the burden on primary family caregivers of stroke patients at home without care services. For this study, the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation (KOSCO) data were used. Of the total 8010 caregivers, 1133 family caregiver burden was assessed with the shortened Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) 3 months after stroke. Patient and caregiver-related factors affecting the heavier burden of caregivers were identified by comparing the heavier caregiver burden group and the lighter caregiver burden group, which divided according to the CBI scores. The 719 (63.5%) family caregiver cared for patients at home without care services. Logistic regression analysis showed that four or more comorbidities (p = 0.002), neurological impairment at early onset (p < 0.001), dependence on daily life (p < 0.001), aphasia (p = 0.024), and depression(p < 0.001) were associated with a heavier burden of care. According to the shortened CBI, caregivers tended to be concerned more about psychological stress than physical strain. The findings suggest the importance of proactively guiding the emotional support services to caregivers who are at high risk of the heavier burden of patient care.

Myelin water imaging (MWI) using MRI has been introduced as a method to quantify the integrity of myelin in vivo. However, the investigation of its potential to probe myelin changes has been limited.To determine the myelin change using MWI in the corticospinal tract (CST) during the rehabilitation of stroke patients.Longitudinal.A total of 24 stroke patients within 6 months from the onset (64.3 ± 16.1 years, 14 women, 10 men) and 10 healthy volunteers (27.0 ± 2.2 years, 2 women, 8 men).Three-dimensional multiecho gradient echo sequence and diffusion-weighted echoplanar imaging sequence at 3 T.The changes of myelin water fraction (MWF) and fractional anisotropy (FA) during rehabilitation were analyzed in the CST and other regions using tractography software and region of interest drawings by the radiologist.A paired t-test was performed to investigate the change of MRI metrics during rehabilitation. In addition, an independent two-sample t-test was performed to investigate the effects of different rehabilitation protocols. A P-value0.05 was considered significant.In the CST, MWF significantly changed from 5.83 ± 0.91% to 6.23 ± 0.97% after rehabilitation while changes of FA (0.442 ± 0.038 to 0.443 ± 0.035) were not significant (P = 0.656). The rate of change in MWF and FA, which were 6.69% and 0.439% respectively, were significantly different. Other regions did not show significant changes (range of MWF change: -3.44% to -1.61%, range of FA change: -1.39% to 0.79%, and range of P-value: 0.144-0.761). Further analysis showed that those with additional robot-assisted rehabilitation had a significantly larger MWF change than those with conventional rehabilitation only (rate of change: 11.2% vs. 3.2%).The feasibility of using MWI to monitor myelin content was demonstrated by showing the MWF changes during rehabilitation.2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY STAGE: 2.

Botulinum toxin type A injection is widely used treatment option for the treatment of upper limb spasticity in stroke patients. The purpose of this study was to explore the safety and efficacy of MT10107, a new botulinum toxin type A, in patients with post-stroke upper limb spasticity.A prospective, randomized, double-blind, active drug-controlled, multi-center, phase I clinical trial. Thirty patients with post-stroke upper limb spasticity were received either MT10107 or onabotulinumtoxinA. Primary endpoint was change of modified Ashworth scale (MAS) score for wrist flexor from baseline to week 4. The secondary endpoints were changes of MAS scores for elbow and finger flexors, response rate, Disability Assessment Scale (DAS), and global assessment of treatment. The safety endpoints such as adverse events, vital signs, physical examination, and laboratory test were evaluated. The outcome measures were evaluated from baseline to week 4.The primary endpoints were -1.07 ± 0.70 and -1.23 ± 0.56 for the MT10107 and onabotulinumtoxinA groups, respectively. The intergroup difference of change between the 2 groups was 0.17 (95% confidence interval -0.31 to 0.64, P = .5769). In secondary endpoints, both groups showed a significant improvement in both MAS and DAS. There was no significant between-group difference in all secondary endpoints and safety measures.The safety and efficacy of MT10107 showed no significant difference compared to onabotulinumtoxinA in post-stroke upper limb spasticity treatment.

Objective To investigate long-term and serial functional outcomes in ischemic stroke patients without diabetes with post-stroke hyperglycemia.Methods The Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation (KOSCO) is a large, multi-center, prospective cohort study of stroke patients admitted to participating hospitals in nine areas of Korea. From KOSCO, ischemic stroke patients without diabetes were recruited and divided into two groups: patients without diabetes without (n=779) and with post-stroke hyperglycemia (n=223). Post-stroke hyperglycemia was defined as a glucose level >8 mmol/L. Functional assessments were performed 7 days and 3, 6, and 12 months after stroke onset.Results There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the groups, except in the age of onset and smoking. Analysis of the linear correlation between the initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and glucose level showed no significant difference. Among our functional assessments, NIHSS, Fugl-Meyer Assessment (affected side), Functional Ambulatory Category, modified Rankin Scale, and Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE) showed statistically significant improvements in each group. All functional improvements except K-MMSE were significantly higher in patients without post-stroke hyperglycemia at 7 days and 3, 6, and 12 months.Conclusion The glucose level of ischemic stroke patients without diabetes had no significant correlation with the initial NIHSS score. The long-term effects of stress hyperglycemia showed worse functional outcomes in ischemic stroke patients without diabetes with post-stroke hyperglycemia.

ImportanceBecause stroke causes diverse functional deficits, understanding the long-term recovery pattern of each functional domain may inform prognosis and therapeutic strategies.ObjectiveTo observe long-term changes in functional status and residual disability in survivors of first-time stroke.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis cohort study was an interim analysis of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation. Between August 2012 and May 2015, 7858 of 10 636 screened patients with first-time strokes from 9 district hospitals in Korea provided informed consent to participate. Data were analyzed from September 2021 through February 2022.ExposureFirst-time stroke.Main Outcomes and MeasuresStudy data include multifaceted face-to-face functional assessments obtained at 8 to 9 points until 60 months after stroke onset. The Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE), Fugl-Meyer Assessment, Functional Ambulatory Category, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association National Outcome Measurement System Swallowing Scale, and Short Korean version of the Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test were performed from 7 days to 60 months after stroke. The Korean Modified Barthel Index was measured from 3 months to 60 months after stroke.ResultsA total of 4443 patients (2649 men [59.62%]; mean [SD] age 62.13 [12.43] years) who underwent repeated functional assessments for 60 months after stroke (3508 patients with ischemic and 935 patients with hemorrhagic stroke) were included. Overall, functions plateaued between 12 and 18 months after stroke and declined after 30 months; for example, mean (SD) K-MMSE improved from 7 days (22.89 [7.89]) to 12 months (26.03 [5.48]) (P P P for interaction P for interaction P for interaction P P = .004), and hemorrhagic stroke type (β vs ischemic stroke = 2.35; SE, 0.81; P = .004).Conclusions and RelevanceThis study found that long-term recovery patterns in multifaceted functional domains differed from one another and varied by patient age, stroke severity, and stroke type. Understanding the diversity of long-term functional recovery patterns and factors associated with these outcomes in survivors of stroke may help clinicians develop strategies for effective stroke care and rehabilitation.

Background: Although many studies about survival rates and functional outcomes after stroke have been published, studies on gender differences have reported conflicting results. Aims: To determine whether there are differences in mortality and functional outcomes during the first 5 years after a first-ever ischemic stroke in Korean males and females. Method: This is an interim analysis of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation, a prospective multicenter cohort study. Multifaceted functional assessments were performed repeatedly from 7 days to 60 months after stroke onset to test motor, ambulatory, cognitive, language, and swallowing functions as well as activities of daily living (ADLs) in patients with first-ever stroke. Of 10,636 first-ever-stroke patients admitted to nine representative hospitals in Korea, 8210 were ischemic stroke patients included in the mortality analysis. Among them, 6258 patients provided informed consent and 3508 completed functional assessments for 60 months. Gender-related differences in 5-year mortality and functional recovery were analyzed. Result: Women showed a significantly higher 5-year mortality rate than men after correction for possible covariates ( p Conclusion: Five-year mortality rate, functional outcomes, and recovery patterns after first-ever ischemic stroke differed significantly by gender. These results suggest the need for gender-specific stroke care and long-term management strategies.

Previously, an artificial neural network method was introduced to estimate quantitative myelin water fraction (MWF) using multi-echo gradient-echo data. However, the fiber orientation of white matter with respect to BTo adopt fiber orientation effects, a complex-valued neural network with complex-valued operation was used. In addition, to compensate for the bias from different scan parameters, a signal model incorporating the TAccording to simulation and in vivo analysis, the proposed method suggests improved quality of MWF estimation by correcting the bias and artifacts. The proposed complex-valued neural network approach can alleviate the dependency of fiber orientation effects compared to previous artificial neural network method. Uncertainty estimates provides information different from fitting error that can be used as a confidence level of the resulting MWF values.An improved MWF mapping using complex-valued neural network analysis has been proposed.

The objective of the present study is to evaluate swallowing-related quality of life in Chinese patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) using the validated Chinese version of the Swallowing Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (C-SWAL-QOL) and factors associated with swallowing-related quality of life, including age, disease duration, and severity of depression by 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale in Chinese version (GDS-C).C-SWAL-QOL was administered to 67 Chinese patients with PD. Upon completion of C-SWAL-QOL, they completed the 15-item GDS-C. Spearman's Rho correlation analyses were performed to examine the relationship between the 10-subscale scores of C-SWAL-QOL and (1) age, (2) disease duration, and (3) depression.Among the subscales in C-SWAL-QOL, sleep, fatigue, eating duration, and communication were the most severely affected. Significant relationships existed between composite C-SWAL-QOL score, total C-SWAL-QOL score, Dysphagia Symptom Battery (DSB) core, and depression. Significant relationships were also observed between depression and the following subscales: communication, fear, mental health, social functioning, and fatigue. Yet, no relationships existed between score of C-SWAL-QOL and age or disease duration in PD.Considering the goal of dysphagia intervention is to improve swallowing safety and efficiency and ultimately enhance patients' QOL, clinicians should consider using C-SWAL-QOL in clinical practice to measure swallowing outcomes and to better understand treatment effectiveness.Implications for rehabilitationDysphagia-related patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures such as Swallowing Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (SWAL-QOL) are the cornerstone to systematically collecting patient-centered data and monitoring rehabilitation outcomes.Based on the scores of Chinese Parkinson's disease (PD) patients in an oral feeding population indicated in the current study, treatment goal and rehabilitation plan can be set.Chinese patients with Parkinson's disease might benefit from a rehabilitation program focusing on the most severely affected subscales in C-SWAL-QOL.

Previous studies have investigated the predictors for home discharge without considering stroke severity. To develop a practical assessment tool that predicts home discharge for moderate stroke patients after subacute rehabilitation therapy in the tertiary hospitals. Stroke patients with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale scores of 6 to 13 were included in this prospective cohort study. Various demographic, clinical, and functional factors were analyzed as potential predictive factors. A weighted scoring model was developed through the following three-step process: 1) selection of the factors by logistic regression analyses, 2) development of a weighted scoring model, and 3) validation of the generalizability of the model. The home discharge rate was 51% (n = 372), and the overall mean length of stay of hospitalization was 32.5 days. 1) The Cognitive Functional Independence Measure, 2) the Functional Ambulation Categories, 3) the modified Charlson Comorbidity Index, and 4) marital status were independent predictors of home discharge. The coefficient value for marital status was adjusted to 1 in the scoring system, and the values of the other parameters were proportionally converted to the nearest integer. Possible total scores ranged from 0 to 13 in the model, with a higher score indicating a higher probability of home discharge. With a cutoff point of 7, this model showed 87.0% sensitivity and 86.2% specificity (area under the curve = 0.90). This novel assessment tool can be useful in predicting home discharge after subacute rehabilitation of moderate stroke patients.

Background and Purpose— The theory of cognitive reserve (CR) was introduced to account for individual differences in the clinical manifestation of neuropathology. This study investigated whether CR has a modulating effect on cognitive impairment and recovery after stroke. Methods— This study is an interim analysis of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation. A total of 7459 patients with first-ever stroke were included for analysis. Education, occupation, and composite CR scores derived from those 2 variables were used as CR proxies. Scores from the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination analyzed for 30 months after stroke onset were analyzed. Results— Lower CR increased the risk of cognitive impairment after stroke. The odds ratio was 1.89 (95% CI, 1.64–2.19) in patients with secondary education and 2.42 (95% CI, 2.03–2.90) in patients with primary education compared with patients with higher education. The odds ratio was 1.48 (95% CI, 1.23–1.98) in patients with a skilled manual occupation and 2.01 (95% CI, 1.42–2.83) in patients with a nonskilled manual occupation compared with patients with a managerial or professional occupation. In the multilevel model analysis, the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination total score increased during the first 3 months (1.93 points per month) and then plateaued (0.02 point per month). The slopes were moderated by the level of education, occupation, and composite CR score: the higher the level of education, occupation, or CR score, the faster the recovery. In the older adult group, the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination scores showed a long-term decline that was moderated by education level. Conclusions— Education and occupation can buffer an individual against cognitive impairment caused by stroke and promote rapid cognitive recovery early after stroke. In addition, higher education minimizes long-term cognitive decline after stroke, especially in older patients. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov . This study investigated the long-term functional changes in patients with moderate-to-severe ischemic stroke. In addition, we investigated whether there was a difference between the modified Barthel Index (MBI) and Functional Independence Measure (FIM) according to severity. To evaluate the changes in the long-term functional independence of the subjects, six evaluations were conducted over 2 years, and the evaluation was performed using MBI and FIM. A total of 798 participants participated in this study, of which 673 were classified as moderate and 125 as severe. During the first 3 months, the moderate group showed greater recovery than the severe group. The period of significant change in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score was up to 6 months after onset in the moderate group, and up to 3 months after onset in the severe group. In the severe group, MBI evaluation showed significant changes up to 6 months after onset, whereas FIM showed significant changes up to 18–24 months. Our results showed that functional recovery of patients with ischemic stroke in the 3 months after onset was greater in the moderate group than in the severe group. FIM is more appropriate than MBI for evaluating the functional status of patients with severe stroke.

Background and Purpose: The aim of this study was to verify the validity of the proportional recovery model in view of the ceiling effect of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients enrolled in the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation between August 2012 and May 2015. Recovery proportion was defined as the actual change in Fugl-Meyer Assessment score of the upper extremity between 7 days and 6 months poststroke, relative to the initial neurological impairment. We then used logistic regression to identify clinical factors attributable to a ceiling effect of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment score of the upper extremity and propensity score matching to verify the validity of the proportional recovery rule. Results: We screened 10 636 patients and analyzed 849 patients (mean age, 65.4±11.9 years; female, 320 [37.7%]) with first-ever ischemic stroke. We found, through logistic regression analysis, that a one-unit increase in the initial neurological impairment and the age at stroke onset affected the odds ratio (1.0386 and 0.9736, respectively) of achieving the full Fugl-Meyer Assessment score of the upper limb at 6 months poststroke. We also demonstrated, through propensity score matching, that the difference in initial neurological impairment of the upper extremity resulted in discrepancy of the recovery proportion (0.92±0.20 [0–1] versus 0.81±0.31 [0–1], P Conclusions: We demonstrated that the ceiling effect of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment score of the upper extremity is pronounced in patients with mild initial motor deficits of the upper extremity and that the recovery proportion varies according to the initial motor deficit of the upper limb using logistic regression analysis and propensity score matching, respectively. These results suggest that the proportional recovery model is not valid.

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether Cerebrolysin combined with rehabilitation therapy supports additional motor recovery in stroke patients with severe motor impairment. This study analyzed the combined data from the two phase IV prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. Stroke patients were included within seven days after stroke onset and were randomized to receive a 21-day treatment course of either Cerebrolysin or placebo with standardized rehabilitation therapy. Assessments were performed at baseline, immediately after the treatment course, and 90 days after stroke onset. The plasticity of the motor system was assessed by diffusion tensor imaging and resting state fMRI. In total, 110 stroke patients were included for the full analysis set (Cerebrolysin n = 59, placebo n = 51). Both groups showed significant motor recovery over time. Repeated-measures analysis of varianceshowed a significant interaction between time and type of intervention as measured by the Fugl–Meyer Assessment (p &lt, 0.05). The Cerebrolysin group demonstrated less degenerative changes in the major motor-related white matter tracts over time than the placebo group. In conclusion, Cerebrolysin treatment as an add-on to a rehabilitation program is a promising pharmacologic approach that is worth considering in order to enhance motor recovery in ischemic stroke patients with severe motor impairment.

Background Deficits in cortical inhibitory processes have been suggested as underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). We examined whether patients with OCD have altered cortical excitability using paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We also tested associations between TMS indices and OCD-related characteristics, including age of onset and response inhibition in the go/no-go paradigm, to examine whether altered cortical excitability contributes to symptom formation and behavioural inhibition deficit in patients with OCD. Methods We assessed motor cortex excitability using paired-pulse TMS in 51 patients with OCD and 39 age-matched healthy controls. We also assessed clinical symptoms and response inhibition in the go/nogo task. All patients were undergoing treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. We performed repeated-measures multivariate analysis of covariance to compare TMS indices between patients with OCD and controls. Results Compared to controls, patients with OCD showed a shorter cortical silent period and decreased intracortical facilitation. However, we found no significant difference between groups for resting motor threshold or short-interval intracortical inhibition. In the OCD group, the shortened cortical silent period was associated with a prompt reaction time in the go/no-go task and with early onset of OCD. Limitations We could not exclude the influence of medications on motor cortex excitability. Conclusion These findings suggest abnormal cortical excitability in patients with OCD. The associations between cortical silent period and response inhibition and age of onset further indicate that altered cortical excitability may play an important role in the development of OCD.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Enteral nutrition formulas with immune-enhancing nutrients, such as n-3 fatty acids, may manage patients' nutritional status and pathophysiological processes. The aim of our study was to investigate natural killer (NK) cell activity alterations and related cytokine changes resulting from feeding with soybean oil-containing enteral nutrition formula (control group) and plant-derived n-3 fatty acid-enriched enteral nutrition formula. SUBJECTS/METHODS Subjects participated for 14 consecutive days and consumed enteral formula containing canola and flaxseed oil (n3EN, test group) in nonsurgical patients hospitalized for rehabilitation. Blood samples were collected on the first day and 14 days after the consumption of each formula daily, and anthropometric parameters were collected. Hematology and biochemical values were analyzed, and NK cell activities and serum cytokine concentration were measured. A total of sixty subjects were included in the analysis, excluding dropouts. RESULTS No significant differences were found in biochemical parameters. The n3EN group's NK cell activities at effector:tumor cell ratios of 10:1, 5:1, 2.5:1 and 0.625:1 were significantly higher than those of the control group after two weeks (P < 0.05). However, there were no statistically significant differences in serum cytokine interleukin (IL)-12, interferon-γ, IL-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α values between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, this study elucidates the beneficial effects of plant-derived n-3 fatty acid supplementation in enteral formula on NK cell activity.

The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between spasticity severity and functional outcomes during the first year after stroke.The Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation is a large, multicenter, prospective cohort study of all patients with acute first-ever stroke admitted to participating hospitals in nine Korean areas. To investigate the correlation between spasticity severity and functional status measured by using the Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), Functional Independence Measurement (FIM), Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), Functional Ambulatory Category (FAC), modified Rankin scale (mRS), and American Speech-Language Hearing Association National Outcome Measurement System Swallowing Scale (ASHA-NOMS), data were analyzed at 3, 6, and 12 mos after the occurrence of stroke.A total of 7359 stroke patients, 3056 were finally included. Prevalence rates of spasticity in patients after stroke were 6.8% at 3 mos, 6.9% at 6 mos, and 7.6% at 12 mos. The scores of mRS and NIHSS were higher and those of K-MBI, FIM, FMA, and ASHA-NOMS were lower in more severe spastic patients, indicating poorer functional outcomes (P0.05).This study demonstrated the coexistence of spasticity and poor functional outcome during the first year after first-ever stroke patients.

Objective To identify the incidence of dysphagia after ischemic stroke and determine factors affecting the presence of dysphagia. Design Retrospective case-control study. This was an interim analysis of a prospective multicenter Korean stroke cohort. Setting Acute care university hospitals. Participants Patients (N=6000) with first-ever acute ischemic stroke. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the presence or absence of dysphagia confirmed at 7 days after onset using the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association National Outcomes Measurement System (ASHA-NOMS) scale, which was determined after conducting screening or standardized tests. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures Age at stroke onset, body mass index (BMI), premorbid modified Rankin Scale (mRS), brainstem lesions, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), poststroke mRS, and ASHA-NOMS swallowing level at poststroke day 7 were evaluated. Results Among patients with ischemic stroke, 32.3% (n=1940) had dysphagia at 7 days after stroke onset. At discharge, 80.5% (n=1561) still had dysphagia. The prediction model for the presence of dysphagia identified age, low BMI, premorbid disabilities, brainstem lesions, and NIHSS as predictive factors.
