Abstract: ISBN du colloque : 978-1-59593-627-1, System-level design methodologies have been introduced as a solution to handle the design complexity of embedded multiprocessor SoC (MPSoC) systems. In this paper we describe a system-level design flow starting from Simulink specification, focusing on concurrent hardware and software design and verification at four different abstraction levels: Simulink Combined Algorithm and Architecture Model (CAAM), Virtual Architecture, Transaction-accurate Model and Virtual Prototype. We used two multimedia applications, Motion-JPEG and H.264, to evaluate this design flow. Experimental results show that our design flow can generate various MPSoC architectures from Simulink CAAM correctly and efficiently, allowing processor and task design space exploration at different abstraction levels.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a new framework for stability assessment of discrete-time piecewise affine systems. An implicit representation for piecewise functions based on ramp nonlinearities is proposed. Instead of the usual sector inequalities adopted in thestudy of Lurie systems, we directly exploit properties of the ramp function, which are given by a particular set of identities and inequalities. These properties are then used to derive stability conditions associated to piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions. These functions are implicitly defined from quadratic forms involving ramp functions. These conditions can be cast as LMIs and their numerical solution is illustrated by examples highlighting the advantages of the proposed method over existing stability analysis methods for PWA systems.

Experimental results show that aging and voltage scaling can increase in at least two times the susceptibility of SRAM-based FPGAs to Soft Error Rate (SER). These results are innovative, because they combine three real effects that occur in programmable circuits operating at ground-level applications. In addition, a model at electrical level for aging, soft error and different voltages in SRAM memory cells was described to investigate by simulation in more details the effects observed at the practical neutron irradiation experiment. Results can guide designers to predict soft error effects during the lifetime of devices operating in different power supply mode.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses the design of a sampled-data model predictive control (MPC) strategy for linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. A continuous-time prediction model, which takes into account that the samples are not necessarily periodic and that plant parameters continuously vary with time, is considered. Moreover, it is explicitly assumed that the value of the parameters used to compute the optimal control sequence is measured only at the sampling instants. The MPC approach proposed by Kothare et al. [1], where the basic idea consists in solving an infinite horizon guaranteed cost control problem at each sampling time using linear matrix inequalities (LMI) based formulations, is adopted. In this context, conditions for computing a sampled-data stabilizing LPV control law that provides a guaranteed cost for a quadratic performance criterion under input saturation are derived. These conditions are obtained from a parameter-dependent looped-functional and a parameter-dependent generalized sector condition. A strategy that consists in solving convex optimization problems in a receding horizon policy is therefore proposed. It is shown that the proposed strategy guarantees the feasibility of the optimization problem at each step and leads to the asymptotic stability of the origin. The conservatism reduction provided by the proposed results, with respect to similar ones in the literature, is illustrated through numerical examples.

Abstract: International audience; This work addresses the event-triggered control (ETC) of discrete-time piecewise affine systems. We propose a method to design a triggering strategy relying on an implicit representation of piecewise affine systems. Thanks to this implicit representation based on ramp functions, we propose a partition-dependent piecewise quadratic functions to define the trigger criterion and use a piecewise quadratic Lyapunov function candidate to derive conditions to certify the global exponential stability of the origin under the ETC strategy. Since the stability conditions can be expressed as linear matrix inequalities constraints, we propose a convex optimization solution to design the triggering function parameters and to compute the Lyapunov function to ensure the closed-loop stability and a reduction on the control updates. The approach is illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract: International audience; The computing continuum's actual trend is facing a growth in terms of devices with any degree of computational capability. Those devices may or may not include a full-stack, including the Operating System layer and the Application layer, or just facing pure bare-metal solutions. In either case, the reliability of the full system stack has to be guaranteed. It is crucial to provide data regarding the impact of faults at all system stack levels and potential hardening solutions to design highly resilient systems. While most of the work usually concentrates on the application reliability, the special session aims to provide a deep comprehension of the impact on the reliability of an embedded system when faults in the hardware substrate of the system stack surface at the Operating System layer. For this reason, we will cover a comparison from an application perspective when hardware faults happen in bare metal vs. real-time OS vs. general-purpose OS. Then we will go deeper within a FreeRTOS to evaluate the contribution of all parts of the OS. Eventually, the Special Session will propose some hardening techniques at the Operating System level by exploiting the scheduling capabilities.

Abstract: This paper deals with the stability analysis of aperiodic sampled-data Lurie systems, where the nonlinearity is assumed to be both sector and slope restricted. The proposed method is based on the use of a new class of looped-functionals whose derivative is negative along the trajectories of the continuous-time system. In addition, it contains a generalized Lurie-type function that is quadratic on both the states and the nonlinearity and has a Lurie-Postnikov integral term, which provides some advantages in comparison to simpler candidate functions. On this basis, stability conditions in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are formulated. It is shown that the proposed conditions guarantee that the Lurie function is strictly decreasing at the sampling instants, which also implies that the continuous-time trajectories converge asymptotically to the origin. We then formulate some optimization problems for computing themaximal intersampling interval or the maximal sector bounds for which the stability of the sampled-data closed-loop system is guaranteed. A numerical example to illustrate the results is provided.

Abstract: International audience; This study deals with the stabilisation of discrete-time linear systems subject to static finite-level quantisation on thecontrol inputs. Two kinds of quantisers are considered: uniform and logarithmic. The modelling of the finite-level quantisation isobtained by the application of deadzone and saturation maps to an infinite-level quantiser. From this model, conditions for thesynthesis of state feedback control laws guaranteeing the convergence of the trajectories to an attractor around the originprovided that the initial state belongs to a certain admissible set are proposed. These conditions can thus be incorporated inlinear matrix inequality-based optimisation schemes to compute the stabilising gain while minimising the size of the attractor.

Alternative architectures are being under investigation in order to continue deliver sustainable benefits for the foreseeable future society at affordable cost. These architectures are not only changing the traditional computing paradigm (e.g., in terms of programming models, compilers, circuit design), but also setting up new challenges and directions on the way these architectures should be tested to guarantee the required quality and reliability levels. This paper highlights the major open questions regarding test and reliability of three emerging computing paradigms being approximate computing, computation-in-memory and neuromorphic computing.

Abstract: International audience; Livestock farming systems must to be redesigned all over world, in order to cope with environmental issues and deal with climate change and economic context regarding to farms’ sustainability. Building feed self-sufficiency of animal production is a way to start transition based on agroecology concepts and using local feeding resources. Scientific literature shows different definition of feed self-sufficiency and identifies different patterns to improve it. Despite of it, implementation by farmers remains unclear to scientists. This study aims at identifying from farmers and advisors, different concepts of feed self-sufficiency and the ways they have in mind to reach it. This study was lead in two dairy ewe regions, in order to compare contexts and to analyze sociotechnical systems. Our main stake was to identify some specific accompanying measures. To do that, a participatory method with LEGO® serious play followed by an individual approach with farmers’ interviews were conducted. Designing feed self-sufficiency with LEGO® serious play allowed to the participants exchanging and building a shared description of feed self-sufficient system. Grazing management, forage practices and barn hay drying were the main practices identified to reach feed self-sufficiency at farm-level. In one of the two region, farmers increased the diversity of the forage resources improving feed self-sufficiency at farm level. In the other region, feed self-sufficiency has been thought at territory scale, because the farms' size are too small and the level of intensification is high. Exchanges with grain farmers is the best way to achieve feed self-sufficiency at territory scale. Four common mainstay were identified: mechanization, social life, environmental impacts and economic profitability enlarging the single concept of feed self-sufficiency. Finally, feed self-sufficiency is reached when the farmer feels autonomous by himself. This study is a milestone for agroecological transition to challenge the agriculture changes from global to local.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a methodology to design stabilising event-trigger strategies for PI-controlled linear continuous-time plants subject to input saturation. Using Lyapunov theory techniques, conditions based on linear matrix inequalities (LMI) are derived to guarantee regional (or global, when possible) asymptotic stability of the equilibrium. These conditions can be incorporated in optimisation problems to choose the parameters of the trigger function aiming at reducing the sampling activity, while ensuring the regional stability of the equilibrium with respect to a given set of admissible initial states. Simulation results illustrate the application and potentialities of the method.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with a wave equation with a one-dimensional space variable, which describes the dynamics of string deflection. Two kinds of control are considered: a distributed action and a boundary control. It is supposed that the control signal is subject to a cone-bounded nonlinearity. This kind of feedback laws includes (but is not restricted to) saturating inputs. By closing the loop with such a nonlinear control, it is thus obtained a nonlinear partial differential equation, which is the generalization of the classical 1D wave equation. The well-posedness is proven by using nonlinear semigroups techniques. Considering a sector condition to tackle the control nonlinearity and assuming that a tuning parameter has a suitable sign, the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is proven by Lyapunov techniques. Some numerical simulations illustrate the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop nonlinear partial differential equations.

Abstract: International audience; The paper presents an observer-based event-triggered control strategy for linear systems subject to input cone-bounded nonlinearities by using only available measurable variables. Sufficient conditions based on linear matrix inequalities are proposed to ensure the asymptotic stability of the closed loop and the avoidance of Zeno behavior in an emulation context. Based on these conditions, a convex optimization problem to compute the parameters of the event-trigger rule aiming at reducing the number of control updates is proposed. The approach is illustrated on a numerical example that considers the control of a linear system with a logarithmic input quantization constraint.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses the problem of regional stability analysis of a continuous-time plant controlled by a discrete-time dynamic output feedback control law with saturation constraints under aperiodic sampling. To cope with the aperiodic sampling problem, the proposed approach is based on an impulsive system modeling and the use of looped functionals. A generalized sector-based relation is applied to tackle the control saturation effects. From these ingredients, conditions to ensure regional asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system under aperiodic sampling are derived. Based on these conditions, LMI-based optimization problems are proposed to compute estimates of the region of attraction of the closed-loop system or to maximize the bound on the maximal admissible interval between two successive sampling instants, for which the regional stability can be ensured with respect to a given set of admissible states. A numerical example illustrates the application of the results.

Abstract: International audience; — The semi-active suspension control problem faces the challenge of the dissipativity constraints of the semi-active dampers. This induces some compromises (actuator saturation, comfort, road holding...) which need to be taken into account in the control design step. In this paper, a state feedback input constrained control problem for LPV systems is considered with H ∞ performance objective. Stabilization conditions based on the Finsler's Lemma are derived in order to ensure the stability in the presence of the input saturation, and to attenuate the disturbance effects. To this aim, two different Lyapunov functions are used. For the stability analysis, a generalized sector condition for LPV systems is applied to treat the nonlinearity caused by the actuator saturation. The considered performance objective regards the reduction of L 2 gain from the disturbance to the controlled output. The LPV controller is computed from the solution of LMIs considering a polytopic representation for the LPV closed-loop system. These theoretical results are applied to a semi-active suspension system where the dissipativity conditions of the semi-active dampers are recast as saturation conditions on the control inputs. The comfort criteria is used as a performance objective in this study. Some simulation results are presented in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses a semi-active suspension control of the full vehicle equipped with 4 controlled semi-active dampers by using a full 7 degree of freedom (DOF) vertical model. First, the dissipativity conditions of the semi-active dampers are recast as saturation conditions on the control inputs. Then, the suspension controller is derived by solving a state feedback control design problem for a class of linear parameter-varying (LPV) system in the presence of actuator saturation. To this aim, a generalized sector condition for LPV system is applied to treat the nonlinearity, caused by the input saturation and to relax the stability condition. The proposed control law ensures the disturbance attenuation by reducing the L 2 gain from the disturbance to the controlled output. This controller, derived in the LPV/H ∞ framework, is based on the LMI solution for polytopic systems. Some realistic simulation results are presented in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract: This paper presents the application of the oscillation test methodology as an alternative to test configurable analog blocks of Field Programmable Analog Arrays. The blocks of the device under test are first configured to behave as oscillators. Then, the output frequency and amplitude are observed to obtain the signature of the fault-free circuit. During test, this signature is compared to the actual output signal. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the method in detecting parametric and large deviation faults of the tested components.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, it is considered a wave equation with a one-dimensional space variable, which describes the dynamics of string deflection. The slope has a finite length and is attached at both boundaries. It is equipped with a distributed actuator subject to a saturation. By closing the loop with a saturating input proportional to the speed of the deformation, it is thus obtained a nonlinear partial differential equation, which is the generalization of the classical 1D wave equation. The well-posedness is proven by using nonlinear semigroups technics. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system, when the tuning parameter has a suitable sign, is proven by Lyapunov technics and a sector condition describing the saturating input.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses stability issues of sampled-data controllers. Considering a continuous-time linear plant and a linear discrete-time dynamic output feedback control law designed from a classical periodic sampling paradigm, the main goal is to assess the effects of aperiodic sampling on the closed-loop stability. This aperiodic sampling models for instance the communication delays and package losses through a network. In addition, the effects of control signal saturation on the stability and the maximal admissible sampling interval are also taken into account . In this context, based on the use of a looped functional, linear matrix inequalities (LMI) are derived to ensure the global asymptotic stability of the origin for the aperiodic sampled-data closed-loop system, provided a bound on the maximal sampling interval is given. An optimization problem in order to evaluate the maximal admissible value for the interval between two sampling instants is then associated to the LMI conditions.

Abstract: International audience; This paper focuses on the problem of static anti-windup design for a class of multivariable nonlinear systems subject to actuator saturation. The considered class regards all systems that are rational on the states or that can be conveniently represented by a rational system with algebraic constraints considering some variable changes. More precisely, a method is proposed to compute a static anti-windup gain which ensures regional stability for the closed-loop system assuming that a dynamic output feedback controller is previously designed to stabilize the nonlinear system. The results are based on a differential-algebraic representation of rational systems. The control saturation effects are taken into account by the application of a generalized sector bound condition. From these elements, LMI-based conditions are devised to compute an anti-windup gain with the aim of enlarging the closed-loop region of attraction. Several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the application of the proposed method.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with the problem of stability and stabilization of sampled-data systems under asynchronous samplings and actuators saturation. The method is based, on the first hand, on the use of a novel class of Lyapunov functionals whose derivative is negative along the trajectories of the continuous-time model of the sampled data system. It is shown that this fact guarantees that a quadratic Lyapunov function is strictly decreasing for the discrete-time asynchronous system. On the other side, the control saturation is taken into account from the use of a modified sector condition. These ingredients lead to the formulation of improved LMI conditions that can be cast in optimization problems aiming at enlarging estimates of the region of attraction of the closed-loop system or maximizing the bounds on the sampling period jitter for which stability and stabilization are ensured.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a control design strategy for LPV systems subject to additive disturbances in the presence of actuator saturation and state constraints. LMI conditions are derived in order to simultaneously compute an LPV controller and an anti-windup gain that ensures the boundedness of the trajectories, considering that the disturbances belong to a given admissible set. The disturbance attenuation is addressed via an H¥ constraint. Besides, state constraints (corresponding to the local validity of the LPV model and system structural limits) are always assured. The theoretical results are applied to a quarter-car model rewritten in the LPV framework where the passivity constraint is recast to the saturation one. The interest of the provided methodology is emphasized by simulations.

Abstract: International audience; This paper exposes a novel method to cope with the stabilization of networked control systems with asynchronous sampling and actuators saturations. The constructive stabilization criterion is expressed in terms of linear matrices inequalities using the continuous-time model of the systems. However the stability analysis of the closed-loop system is based on the discrete-time Lyapunov Theorem. An example shows that the conservatism of the conditions has been reduced with respect to the literature.

Abstract: International audience; This article considers the design of an anti-windup compensator for linear systems subject to time-varying input delays and saturating actuators. Local and global stabilization conditions ensuring both external as well as internal stability of the closed-loop system are derived directly as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). To compute the anti-windup gains, these conditions are cast into the following optimization problems: maximization of the set of admissible initial conditions, maximization of the bound of admissible L2 disturbances or the maximization of the L2-gain from the disturbance to the regulated output. Simulation examples are provided to illustrate the proposed solution.

Abstract: International audience; This paper focuses on the stabilization problem of neutral systems in the presence of time-varying delays and control saturation. Based on a descriptor approach and the use of a modified sector relation, global and local stabilization conditions are derived using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals. These conditions, formulated directly as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), allow to relate the control law to be computed to a set of admissible initial conditions, for which the asymptotic and exponential stabilities of the closed-loop system are ensured. An extension of these conditions to the particular case of retarded systems is also provided. From the theoretical conditions, optimization problems with LMI constraints are therefore proposed to compute stabilizing state feedback gains with the aim of ensuring stability for a given set of admissible initial conditions or the global stability of the closed-loop system. A numerical example illustrates the application of the proposed results.

Abstract: ISBN du colloque : 978-1-59593-627-1; System-level design methodologies have been introduced as a solution to handle the design complexity of embedded multiprocessor SoC (MPSoC) systems. In this paper we describe a system-level design flow starting from Simulink specification, focusing on concurrent hardware and software design and verification at four different abstraction levels: Simulink Combined Algorithm and Architecture Model (CAAM), Virtual Architecture, Transaction-accurate Model and Virtual Prototype. We used two multimedia applications, Motion-JPEG and H.264, to evaluate this design flow. Experimental results show that our design flow can generate various MPSoC architectures from Simulink CAAM correctly and efficiently, allowing processor and task design space exploration at different abstraction levels.

Abstract: International audience; One of the main problems when developing analog filters in VLSI is to achieve high accuracy regarding the cutoff frequency. This is mainly due to the difficulty in obtaining accurate time constants. Testing of such filters is also challenging, in the sense that special equipment is required. Small deviations in the resistor or capacitor values may lead to a very high mismatch between the expected and the achieved cutoff frequency. Although switched-capacitor or active-transistor techniques may produce good results, the cost to use such approaches becomes another limiting factor, and only increases the tester needs. In this work, we present the development of an analog FIR filter, which does not use passive components to tune the cutoff frequency or the quality factor. Instead, the filter coefficients and the input signal are represented in a bit stream fashion, and are digitally processed, thus avoiding the use of expensive analog-to- digital converters. The impact of this filter architecture on test cost and possible design-for-test techniques are discussed in this paper.

Abstract: International audience; Emerging embedded systems require heterogeneous multiprocessor SoC architectures that can satisfy both high-performance and programmability. However, as the complexity of embedded systems increases, software programming on an increasing number of multiprocessors faces several critical problems, such as multithreaded code generation, heterogeneous architecture adaptation, short design time, and low cost implementation. In this paper, we present a software code generation flow based on Simulink to address these problems. We propose a functional modeling style to capture data-intensive and control-dependent target applications, and a system architecture modeling style to seamlessly transform the functional model into the target architecture. Both models are described using Simulink. From a system architecture Simulink model, a code generator produces a multithreaded code, inserting thread and communication primitives to abstract the heterogeneity of the target architecture. In addition, the multithread code generator called LESCEA applies the extensions of dataflow based memory optimization techniques, considering both data and control dependency. Experimental results on a Motion-JPEG decoder and an H.264 decoder show that the proposed multithread code generator enables easy software programming on different multiprocessor architectures with substantially reduced data memory size (up to 68.0%) and code memory size (up to 15.9%).

Those NPUs are endowed with elementary processing and communication capabilities, that for exploring the opportunity of finely adapting system behavior according to current system state. Applications considered in this work are described as task graphs, which are mapped at run-time taking into account the performance requirements, the number of available NPUs and their respective positions. The placement is performed using different algorithms. An adaptive architecture running several MJPEG streaming applications is used for experiments and comparisons.

Abstract: International audience; Strategies for the test of Field Programmable Analog Arrays (FPAAs) have been devised based on testing separately their main three components: configurable analog blocks, I/O pads and interconnection network. In this work, a scheme for testing the interconnection network, in particular the global wiring, is presented. As long as analog wiring is considered, catastrophic faults at the switches and wires are considered, as well as parametric capacitive or resistive defects in interconnects. Similarly to FPGAs, critical path search is based on a graph model, so that known algorithms are reused, yielding a minimum number of Test Configurations. Then, a near-zero area overhead BIST procedure is proposed, in which Analog Built-in Block Observers are implemented as oscillators and integrators, respectively, generating test stimuli and analyzing output responses, using internal configurable resources of the FPAA.

In this work, a scheme for testing the I/O cells and the local and global interconnection networks of FPAAs is proposed, using an adjacency graph model to represent the programmable interconnection and I/O resources, and then devising a set of test configurations (TC) by solving graph coloring problems. The goal is to achieve a near minimum number of TCs ensuring all stuck-open and stuck-on faults in switches, as well as opens and shorts in wires, are covered. Large parametric faults in interconnects are implicitly covered in these TCs by judiciously choosing test stimuli and, in I/O buffers, by means of an oscillation-based test strategy.

Abstract: International audience; The problem of testing the Configurable Analog Blocks (CABs) of Field Programmable Analog Arrays (FPAAs) is addressed in this paper. The considered fault model comprises deviations in the nominal values of CAB programmable capacitors, deviations in the programmable gains of CAB input amplifiers and stuck-on/stuck-open faults in CAB switches. The problem of test stimuli generation is solved, in a first approach, by using the Oscillation Test Strategy (OTS), which is associated to a test response analysis external to the device under test. In a second approach, a Built-In Self-Test (BIST) scheme is proposed by associating to the OTS an Output Response Analyzer (ORA) built using the internal FPAA resources. Both approaches are validated using the ispPAC10 FPAA from the Lattice Semiconductor Corporation. In the paper, the approaches are compared in terms of fault coverage, test application time and required external hardware resources for testing. Experimental results show that a good compromise of these aspects can be found by taking the best of each approach.

Abstract: International audience; Among other applications, programmable oscillators are used to generate patterns for analogue and mixed-signal built-in self-test. The switched-capacitor multi-mode stimuli generator presented in this work associates programmability to lower area overheads. The type of signal (pulse, ramp or sinewave), the amplitude and the frequency of oscillation can be easily programmed. The stimuli generator is expected to alleviate surface penalties, because digital programming of the oscillation frequency can be achieved by changing the switching frequency using an embedded frequency divider. Experimental results involving a giquad filter show that a very high fault coverage can be obtained in both transient and multifrequency modes of the stimuli generator.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper a multi-mode signature analyser is proposed to be built into analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits. The analyser circuitry is based on analog integrators and can perform transient (with one integrator) and frequency (with two integrators) response compaction. The area overhead incurred can be very low, since the same signature analyser can be shared by several analog macros. Besides that, whenever integrators are available on-chip for functional purposes, they can be shared with the testing circuitry. Experiments carried on a Sallen-Key (transient response compaction) and on a biquad filter (frequency response compaction) showed that a very high coverage of catastrophic and pammetric faults can be obtained by using the proposed multi-mode signature analyser.
